Carefully composed watercolours, an ode to the naive simplicity of rural life.

Shanghai Biennial Special

THE 2012 INTERNATIONAL WATERCOLOUR BIENNIAL IN ZHUJIAJIAO, SHANGHAI WAS CERTAINLY AN EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED. THE TOP NAMES IN INTERNATIONAL WATERCOLOUR CAME TO EXHIBIT THEIR WORK UNDER ONE ROOF FOR THE PLEASURE OF AN ENTHUSIASTIC CROWD, BUT THE REAL SURPRISE HOWEVER LAY IN THE SHEER QUANTITY OF INCREDIBLY-TALENTED CHINESE ARTISTS. THE CHINESE WATERCOLOUR MOVEMENT THAT HAS JUST BEGUN TO REACH OUR SHORES IS OBVIOUSLY ONLY JUST BEGINNING AND THERE IS AN LARGE AMOUNT OF ART AND ARTISTS STILL TO COME. HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THEIR PAINTINGS FROM THE SHOW WITH COMMENTS BY JANINE GALLIZIA, WHO WAS ON THE JURY AT ZHUJIAJIAO.

The Survivors. 85 x 115 cm A simple and quite unpredictable subject was used to create this dynamic and original painting. The technical skills and the subject treatment were well thought out and executed. We can sense the movement of the figures. The painting’s originality and its loose painterly technique are the strong points that made this painting stand out from the others in the show.

WANG WEIMIN/WANG MENG

Existence no.12. 63.5 x 48.5 cm Shop windows are becoming a common subject for painting. Although the subject is no longer what I would class as original, the humour injected into the painting adds an extra dimension to this brilliantly-composed and technically-perfect piece. This is a flawless painting on every level.
