DISCOVER HISTORIC BARBADOS

Barbados is the land of lush landscapes, sandy beaches, and flavorful rum, with a strong British influence from its many years of British occupation beginning in the 1600s. In 1966, Barbados gained its independence from the United Kingdom, and even though more than 50 years have passed, the country’s impact on the island is still seen in Barbados’ culture, architecture, and traditions.

Catch a Sporting Event on Barbados

First, start with a spot of tea, then dress in your best whites to watch a game of cricket with a refreshing gin and tonic. If cricket isn’t your thing, enjoy a chukka of polo plus stomping divots or a thrilling horse race at the Barbados Turf Club located within the Garrison Historic Area just outside Bridgetown.

Watch the Changing of the Guard Show

A time-honored British tradition, every Thursday at noon, the Barbados Defense Force hosts a Changing of the Sentry ceremony at the main guard of the Barbados Garrison in Bridgetown. Donning the colorful Zouave uniform chosen by Queen Victoria in 1858, this unique display of British culture lasts about fifteen minutes. Be sure to get there early to snag a great viewing spot and snap a cheeky photo! While in Bridgetown, you’ll also want to stop by the Parliament Buildings to capture a few pictures. Built in 1870, these buildings have been the seat of government on Barbados since 1874 and were formerly the site of Colonial administration.

Step Back in Time at a Stately Plantation

Home

Barbados is steeped in history and spotted with picturesque plantation homes that transport you into the past. When the British arrived on the island in 1625, they built statuesque plantation homes to grow tobacco, cotton, and sugar. Several homes have since been restored and refurbished for public viewing, and one, the St. Nicholas Abbey, even distills its own rum.

Visit Historical Museums & Buildings

For even more history, visit the Arlington House Museum, a restored 18th-century building in Speightstown with an interactive three-story museum, or stop by the Barbados Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to learn more about the island’s unique culture.

Stop by the Bridgetown Jewish Synagogue

Built in 1654, this historic synagogue was destroyed by a hurricane in 1831 but has since been resorted to its original beauty. Right next door is the Nidhe Israel Museum, a museum that traces Jewish history in Barbados and highlights their contribution to Barbadian society.

Take a Trip to the St. James & St. John Parish Church

These churches are amongst the four oldest surviving churches in Barbados. St. James is located near the site of the first settlement in Holetown and its church features a bell with the inscription, “God bless King William 1696.” The bell predates the famous American Liberty Bell by 56 years.

Timeshare invoices are sent to your email address on file before your due date and payments are due by the due date. Can I cancel my vacation ownership reservation?

Of course! You can cancel your reservation at any time prior to travel. Cancellation and change fees vary depending on how close you are to your travel dates. Most contracts require you to use your week in the same calendar year when you cancel, and you cannot roll your week over to another year. This is for all mandatory, non-mandatory, and Divi Travel Club contracts.

How can I check how many weeks I have left on my vacation ownership contract?

To find out how many weeks you have left on your contract, please contact our owner relations department at 1-888-863-6822 or ownerrelations@diviresorts.com Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.

I absolutely love what I do, and when I get in the zone, that’s where my culinary creations blossom. You can create anything with food — it’s like having blank paper and you are the artist. Also, the hospitality aspect drives me. I always liked to help people as I did when I worked in the nursing field. It truly makes me feel good.

What are your goals for Divi Flamingo?

My main goal is to deliver quality food to each table. Guests can expect fresh ingredients and dishes made with love and care in a stunning oceanfront paradise.

What type of cuisine do you specialize in? My expertise is Caribbean cuisine with an international twist. I have a healthy and light cooking style, so guests can savor quality dishes that are both delicious and nutritious while on vacation.

EXECUTIVE CHEF NORMAN MCPHERSON

Born in Jamaica and raised in Connecticut, Norman McPherson has been cooking professionally around the world for more than 20 years. He joins the team at Divi Carina Bay with a goal to continue the tradition of the resort’s strong presence on the island.

What do you enjoy most about cooking?

I love the idea of taking a simple raw ingredient and turning it not only into a work of art, but also something that’s healthy, satisfying, and nourishing. I really enjoy cooking Italian and French West Indies concepts. The key, for me, is finding the best ingredients to cook any cuisine.

What can guests expect at Divi Carina Bay? Guests can expect a strong focus on traditional Caribbean cuisine, the freshest seafood, authentic Italian, and an emphasis on organic and healthy Ingredients.

How does your background influence you? I remember the incredible dishes my grandmother would prepare for us, and there was always extra in case others would come by. She taught me how to be kind-hearted and unselfish when it comes to nourishment. For me, she was the original architect of food and love.

President’s Elite Members Lola and John Sertzes love visiting their home away from home at Divi Aruba Phoenix Beach Resort on Aruba. They first fell in love with the island back in 1994 during their honeymoon and promised each other they would be back in the future. Ten years later, they kept that promise and started vacationing on the island every year, bringing along their children and making lifelong friends along the way.

“We’ve made so many friends over the years that we reconnect with every time we visit. It just feels like a second home to us,” said Lola. “We love the people, the island, the beach, the weather, and the food, among other things.”

After ten years as faithful owners at Divi Aruba Phoenix, Lola and John decided to upgrade to President’s Elite Members with the Divi Vacation Club.

“We upgraded for many reasons. The two celebrate Christmas and New Year’s on Aruba, often bringing along their adult children and their significant others. While they’ve taken advantage of many of the fun activities the island has to offer in the past, like jeep tours, catamaran rides, underwater submarine exploration, and horseback riding, they say what they truly enjoy now is just relaxing on the resort and soaking up the sun with a cold drink in hand.

“My day consists of waking up and relaxing on the beach from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Then we go to a nice dinner and take a walk on the beach,” said John. “It’s so convenient because the resort is small so you can get to your room within minutes, and we love the staff. They are always so helpful and willing to help us with whatever we need.”

The two say they will continue to visit the island and Divi Aruba Phoenix every year for as long as they can.

“I can’t imagine missing a year,” added Lola. “We love everything about our vacations at Divi Aruba Phoenix!”

Divi Aruba Phoenix made a generous donation to the Animal Welfare Alliance Aruba to help over 450 pets and their families, create a safer community for pets, and minimize the neglect and abuse of animals.

DIVI ARUBA PHOENIX HOSTS CLOTHING DRIVE

Team members at Divi Aruba Phoenix participated in a clothing drive, gathering plenty of used clothes to donate to Super Thrift Charity Store, which also serves as a vocational training center to help individuals battling addiction and mental health issues.

Bellies and hearts were full as Divi Flamingo hosted a delicious traditional breakfast for Sentro Akseso Boneiru, a local foundation that provides care and social support to those in need.

It was a day of fun and exercise as Divi Southwinds team members joined together to join the RBC Fun Walk for Kids. This race raises funds for scholarships for students of the UWI, the UWI Student Hardship and Emergency Fund, and student wellness programs.

JOINS SXM DOET & SAVE THE PELICAN PROJECT

Keeping the resort grounds pristine and clean isn’t just important for guests—it’s also vital for the brown pelican population that calls Fort Amsterdam home. Together with EPIC, Environmental Protection in the Caribbean, the resort’s landscaping team helped clean up Fort Amsterdam while adding new signage to help visitors learn more about the national bird of St. Maarten.

FIRST AID & AED TRAINING PROVIDED FOR EMPLOYEES

The resort recently received two automated external defibrillators and trained select staff members in first aid, AED usage, and emergency medical response.

PACK FOR A PURPOSE PROGRAM CONTINUES

Guests continue to donate much-needed supplies to Pack for a Purpose, which supports The New Start for Children Foundation, a local foster home for children, and SECDA, an umbrella organization of St. Maarten’s independent daycare center.

ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT A HUGE SUCCESS

Fun was had by kids and adults of all ages at this year’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt. The popular island event raises funds each year to support the Sint Maarten Nature Foundation.
