SUMMER 2018 1

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Summertime is here, a favorite for many of our members, owners and guests traveling with their children and families. Our resorts are perfect for summer travel, with all-suite accommodations that offer enough room for everyone to spread out and enjoy a spacious living room, convenient dining area and fully equipped kitchen. Plus, our outdoor BBQ grills are ideal for those great family cookouts. Of course, there’s also miles of sandy beaches, freshwater swimming pools to help you cool off, all kinds of dining choices and fun family activities like tennis, basketball, miniature golf, bocce ball, beach volleyball and water sports. We have great news for those who love St. Maarten and Divi Little Bay Beach Resort! Almost immediately after Hurricane Irma, we committed to reopening the resort, and just eight months later, in May, we did it! The resort will be fully renovated by this fall and we’re really excited about all of the resort’s new features. Some of those include a new Caribbean eatery called The Shack, with delicious BBQ, Jerk and Roti, and the newly named Fort Amsterdam Cafe (formerly Bayview Cafe) with gourmet coffee, delicious pastries and sandwiches. We are completely redesigning the main pool, formerly known as the Casitas Pool. This area is being transformed into a spectacular place to relax with a new bar, cabanas, hammocks, water features and an expanded pool deck. This area will be renamed pureocean Pool and Bar. Plus, all of our units will be completely refurnished with a contemporary look. The kitchens have modern stainless steel appliances and the bathrooms have been upgraded too. Just as importantly, the island is bouncing back to life. Many wonderful restaurants, shops and activities have reopened and the island’s magnificent beaches are busy. We hope all of our loyal owners, members and past guests will visit St. Maarten as soon as possible to give our staff and the island a muchneeded boost. Divi Dutch Village Beach Resort on Aruba, which underwent a complete resort-wide renovation from May 2016 to December 2017, is enjoying an overwhelmingly positive response from our owners, members and guests. We’ve also appreciated all of the accolades we’ve recently received from the media and travel industry, who say the resort is an all-around winner! We added a brand new check-in building, BBQs and a swim-up pool bar. Three freshwater pools were completely renovated and redesigned, and cabanas, chairs and umbrellas were also added. Every unit now offers contemporary furniture, sleek kitchens with stainless steel appliances, new lighting and fresh drapes. The entire roofline of each building has been redesigned and modern balconies and patios were added. Want to know more? Have a look at the NEW Divi Dutch Village Beach Resort on pages 9 and 10. 1

Whichever destination you choose to visit this season, we look forward to seeing you on-island soon – and remember, we always appreciate reading your comments and feedback. I personally read many of the TripAdvisor reviews and comments on social media, and it makes me happy to know we are doing an excellent job. I also greatly appreciate knowing the areas upon which we might improve. We continually strive to exceed your vacation expectations – that’s always been our goal and it always will be, no matter the season. Wishing you and your family a safe, healthy and happy summer! Sincerely,

Marco Galaverna President & COO, Divi Resorts

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DIVI GM Welcome Anne-Marie Brooks, the newest addition to Divi Little Bay Beach Resort on St. Maarten! With her glass-half-full attitude and patience even in the toughest situations, Anne-Marie returns to Divi Little Bay, 28 years after her first internship on St. Maarten, to take on the role of General Manager. We sat down with Anne-Marie to learn more about her plans for the newly rebuilt resort and find out what makes the island so special to her and her family.

What improvements and changes do you plan on making at Divi Little Bay, and what do you hope to accomplish in the future? A lot of improvements have been made after last year’s hurricanes. We have reopened with completely renovated rooms, redesigned and improved pools and new and upgraded restaurants. I am excited about all of the improvements and the opportunity to elevate the guest experience at Divi Little Bay. We are going to give everything we do a personal touch with customized service. I hope my management team and I continue to evolve and awaken our full potential, redefining quality guest service to support Divi Resorts’ mission.

What brought you to Divi Little Bay? Divi Little Bay has always had a special place in my heart. This is where I first started my career 28 years ago as an intern for my Hotel Management Studies. The resort was called Divi Little Bay & Racquet Club back then, and the motto was “where barefoot elegance is a way of life.” Coming from a cold and rainy town in the southernmost part of the Netherlands, I fell in love right away. Not to mention, I met my husband right here on this gorgeous beach, while I was reading my book in the afternoon sun and he was playing beach volleyball.

What makes you passionate about this job? I love taking care of people, and I take great personal pride in making my guests happy and delivering the best vacation experience possible.

What do you love about the island and why? St. Maarten is a unique place, and I will never get tired of the stunning views. The combination of vibrant colors, clear blue water, white sand beaches, blue skies and green hilltops - it’s just so magnificent, it makes me happy! It’s two countries in one, where many cultures and nationalities live together in peace and harmony. What more can you ask for?

Is there anything you would like to say to the hundreds of loyal Divi Little Bay owners, members and guests? I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Divi Little Bay owners, members and guests for their continued support and love for the resort and St. Maarten – our team has been truly humbled by your continued support. We will be back better and stronger than ever, as a resort and as an island, and I look forward to welcoming you and sharing everything that’s new and improved. I am thrilled to be part of the Divi family and I can’t wait to meet and greet you personally when you arrive. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? In my free time, I love to read, dance, and enjoy a good glass of wine over a nice dinner with friends. I also love volunteering as often as possible to help the elderly and make this world a better place! 2

FEATURED DVC MEMBERS

Introducing Louise and John Grimes, our featured President’s Elite Members for this issue. No strangers to Aruba, the Grimes have been visiting the island since 1994, calling it their “home away from home.” The happy couple celebrates their 50th wedding anniversary next year and plans on spending the special occasion at their favorite vacation destination! John and Louise became Divi Vacation Club President’s Elite Members last year, having owned several timeshare weeks at Divi Village Golf & Beach Resort. We sat down with the pair to find out what makes Aruba so magical to them and why they decided to convert their membership. “We first visited Aruba when we were on a cruise and thought we would come back someday,” says John. “We’ve been coming back to Aruba ever since!” It wasn’t long after their first visit to Aruba that the Grimes decided this was the place they wanted to make their vacation home forever. “We originally purchased a week from Divi Resorts back in 1996, and a few years later we added a second week,” John explains. “When my wife and I retired, we started coming more often, adding several more weeks along the way. Last year, when we converted to the President’s Elite Membership, we added three more weeks.” John and Louise say there is plenty to love about Divi Resorts and the island of Aruba.

summer, I was able to read 22 books! Plus, we love the weather and there are so many wonderful staff members that every time we visit, we get hugs, kisses and a grand welcoming back!” Louise says besides the weather, the best part of Aruba is that it feels safe. “You can drink the water. You can move away from the resort without feeling as though you’re going to be in danger.” Practically locals themselves due to how long they’ve been visiting the island, the Grimes are happy to show guests around the resort and help friends decide to take the leap to President’s Elite status. “Two weeks ago, one of our best friends came down here and we started explaining the details of the membership. After a full day of exploring the options, and a much-needed bingo break, they decided to become President’s Elite Members, and they are thrilled with it,” says John.

“We have developed many friends over the years and we look forward to seeing them every time we are here,” says John. “It’s always been a wonderful place to come and relax. We both love to read, and when I was here for four weeks last 4

ISLAND ADVENTURER At Divi Resorts, we enjoy sharing our love for the Caribbean with you and helping you discover everything that makes our island destinations so spectacular. This summer, we’re exploring the lovely island of Barbados!

WHAT TO SEE: There are so many sights to see on Barbados, it’s hard to narrow our list down to just a few! The abundance of British history and culture on the island provides exciting educational experiences for visitors who want to explore historic sites and learn more about Barbados. Some of the most beautiful landmarks are the colorful churches with magnificent architecture that have been around for centuries – definitely a must-see for those on the hunt for a taste of island history. Barbados is also home to beautiful sugar plantations, many of which have been restored and preserved for generations, and now offer tours to the public. One of our favorite plantations

5

is the St. Nicholas Abbey, which has remained seemingly untouched for nearly 350 years. The current owners have kept many of the rooms in the same condition as they were centuries ago, and daily tours offer a glimpse back in time. After the tour, make sure to stop by the tasting room, where you can sample delicious rum from the on-site distillery that’s still in operation today. The tasting is often hosted by a member of the current owners’ family, who provides you with an even more in-depth look into the history of the house and its rum distillery! For more information, visit www.stnicholasabbey.com. Plus, no Caribbean vacation would be complete without a visit to breathtaking beaches, and luckily, Barbados has many gorgeous shores to enjoy. The beaches vary greatly depending on which side of the island you are on. On the southern coast, the shore is calm with miles of white sand, while on the eastern coast, there are larger waves that attract surfers from around the world. We also suggest visiting the northern coast, where giant coral and sandstone cliffs rise directly out of the ocean, creating the most striking, photo-worthy scenery.

WHAT TO DRINK: Barbados is famous for its rum, specifically Mount Gay Rum, which is the world’s oldest rum, known by locals as “the rum that invented rum.” Mount Gay Rum is a tradition on this island, which is why you’ll find rum punch on the drink menu almost anywhere you go. Once you taste it, you’ll understand why it’s a favorite! This light, fruity punch perfectly accompanies the laid-back Barbados lifestyle, and it’s sure to get you in the vacation state-of-mind. Want to make your own rum punch for a party at home? Try out this recipe from the bar at pureocean:

Ingredients 19 oz. Mount Gay Rum 18 oz. water 13 oz. simple syrup 12 oz. grenadine 4 oz. lime juice 1 oz. Angostura bitters

Instructions Mix all of the ingredients in a punch bowl, stir and garnish each cup with a maraschino cherry. Cheers!

For more delicious drink recipes, visit www.mountgay.com!

WHAT TO EAT: You can’t visit Barbados without sampling its seafood specialty – flying fish. This light, flaky fish is often served fried on a sandwich or in tacos, but it can also be served grilled and seasoned to perfection. Luckily, when you stay at Divi Southwinds Beach Resort, you can get some of the best flying fish on the island prepared by award-winning Executive Chef Henderson Butcher at our on-site restaurant, pureocean. We highly recommend ordering the Bajan Flying Fish Sandwich for lunch; it’s delicious! At dinner, you can get your fix for flying fish by trying out the Flying Fish Pop appetizer, an herb-crusted fish and plantain lollipop served with a tangy tomato and orange sauce. This local delicacy, that Chef Butcher and his culinary team have perfected, is not to be missed! View the full menu at www.diviresorts.com/divi-southwinds-dining.htm. 6

CHEF ANTONIO BRUNI Hailing from a small town in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, Divi Flamingo Beach Resort’s Executive Chef Antonio Bruni was raised with a strong appreciation for excellent food. “I come from a region and a family where food is homemade and where we follow the seasons,” he explains, citing his father’s hunting background and the garden at his family’s home as inspirations that helped develop his love of fresh fare. Chef Antonio says he wasn’t classically trained in cooking, but rather gained his skills through years of experience and a true passion for food. Throughout his culinary career, he’s worked in restaurant development and management and has held chef roles in various restaurants in Italy, London and Bonaire. Now an entrepreneurial culinary expert with over 27 years of cooking experience, Chef Antonio brings a fresh perspective to the resort’s two restaurants, pureocean and Chibi Chibi on a daily basis.

7

Chef Antonio specializes in a variety of cuisines, but each of his dishes encompass several distinct aspects that represent his signature cooking style: • Tasty flavors – He uses a maximum of four flavors on a plate, perfectly combining them to produce a balanced dish. • Fresh ingredients – He uses only the best ingredients and takes special care when working with them to preserve their authentic flavors. • Less is more – He believes in giving identity and personality to dishes without adding too many unnecessary flavors. He simplifies his dishes by utilizing herbs, spices and sauces to enhance the taste.

Be sure to stop by these restaurants during your next stay on Bonaire, and make sure to bring your appetite! Would you like to bring the taste of Bonaire and Italy to your home? We’ve snagged Chef Antonio’s rich and delicious Classic Tiramisu recipe for you to make and enjoy anytime!

FROM OUR TABLE TO YOURS

CHEF ANTONIO’s CLASSIC TIRAMISU Makes 10 servings

“The popularity of this dish comes from the richness of the main ingredients that combine for a creamy, mouth-watering treat. Plus, the amaretto liqueur gives the dessert a nice kick while adding an appetizing almond-like flavor” -Executive Chef Antonio Bruni

Ingredients:

Instructions:

1 pack of ladyfinger biscuits

1. Make the coffee and let cool.

2 ½ cups strong coffee (without sugar)

2. While coffee is cooling, make

10.5 oz. mascarpone cheese 1 ⅓ cups heavy cream 6 egg yolks ⅓ cup caster sugar (finely ground sugar) 2 tbsp. amaretto liqueur ⅓ cup dark chocolate (crumbled)

custard. Whip egg yolks and half of the sugar until white, then add amaretto and mascarpone, and continue to whip until smooth. Be careful not to over whip as it will split. Once smooth, put in the fridge to cool. 3. In another bowl, whip heavy

cream with the remaining sugar until it’s stiff. 4. In a large bowl, combine custard

and cream mixtures gently with a spatula until smooth.

5. Once the coffee has cooled, dip

the ladyfinger biscuits in the coffee until soaked but not soggy, and let drain. 6. Assemble the tiramisu in a large

baking dish. Start with a layer of the cream-custard mixture then add a level of biscuits, a sprinkle of dark chocolate crumble and another layer of the cream-custard mixture. Repeat and finish with dark chocolate crumble on top. 7. Put in the fridge to cool for 2 hours. 8. Serve and enjoy!

DIVI CARES ST. MAARTEN DIVI LITTLE BAY DONATES FURNITURE Divi Little Bay recently donated its remaining furniture and beds left over from Hurricane Irma to the Forever Blessed Giving Back Charity Foundation to help those in need. Among the items donated to the foundation were beds, dressers, chairs and more. Organizers and recipients were all smiles as the items were loaded up and delivered to their new homes.

“When the resort was hit by Hurricane Irma, they were able to salvage many appliances and furniture, some of which went to Little Bay staff members that were in need. So, when resort management heard that the Forever Blessed Foundation was searching for furniture donations, they gladly stepped up to the plate, donating all remaining items that were no longer needed at the resort.” –Marco Galaverna

ALL RESORTS DIVI RESORTS GOES STRAWLESS In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, all of our resorts on Aruba, Barbados, Bonaire, St. Maarten & St. Croix, have gone strawless as part of our “Divi Green” initiative.

According to National Geographic, Americans use 500 million straws daily, and 8 million tons of plastic trash flows into our world’s oceans every year. While plastic drinking straws are not the top contributor, these tiny tubes are unnecessary and have become a huge problem for our beautiful Caribbean islands and the creatures that call them home. Their size makes them one of the most insidious polluters because they entangle marine animals and are consumed by fish. We hope our efforts will help curb this pollution. 13

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: SERGE

Diving to the depths of the deep blue sea and exploring the island by night, Divi Flamingo Beach Resort & Casino’s Serge De Groote is one with the water, serving as the Dive Operations Manager for Divi Dive Bonaire. This year, he’s celebrating his 20th anniversary with Divi Resorts and says he wouldn’t have it any other way! We sat down with this underwater expert to dive into what makes his job so thrilling each and every day. What brought you to Bonaire and Divi Resorts? When I was in Europe, I received a job offer on Bonaire from another company and decided to take it. When that job didn’t work out, Divi Resorts offered me a position and the rest is history! Here I am today, celebrating 20 years of great memories with Divi Resorts and there’s more to come! What is your favorite part of the job? The variety and diversity! I have the opportunity to work with divers of all ages and experience levels and a wonderful staff. I also manage the retail shop, our dive fleet, gather daily weather conditions and attend marketing events in the US, so I really get to oversee every aspect of the dive operation. There’s certainly never a boring or dull moment!

Why do you love diving so much? When I was a child, I was always watching episodes of Jacques Cousteau and surgery documentaries on TV, so I always knew I wanted to become a diver or a surgeon. I think I made the right choice with the first option! What is one of your favorite dive spots on Bonaire? The house reef in front of the resort is actually one of my favorites. It is called Calabas Reef. It’s just amazing seeing turtles, barracuda, schools of tarpons, seahorses, frogfishes and rays all just steps from our shore 24 hours a day. What is your favorite diving location in the world? Out of all of the places I’ve traveled and worked, the Maldives, off the coast of India, as well as the island of Malpelo, off the coast of Colombia, were my favorites. Both destinations are well known for large marine life like manta rays, sharks, seals and more. What is your favorite creature to see when diving? I love to see sea turtles as they are very special, and we are lucky to have quite a few of them in Bonaire because they are well protected. What do you like to do in your free time? I’m at the dive shop pretty much every day, so there’s not much free time left, but when I’m off work, I enjoy relaxing at home, taking it easy or going for a drive around the island.

14

SUMMER FUN FOR KIDS & FAMILIES Each of our island destinations is brimming with family-friendly activities and attractions for all age groups just waiting to be explored. Whatever island you’re on, there are countless ways to enjoy the Caribbean with your entire family. From snorkeling and diving through vibrant coral reefs to sailing across crystalclear waters, off-roading through the rugged countryside or racing down the world’s steepest zip line, there’s always something fun to do on our islands. Here are a few ideas:

ARUBA DE PALM ISLAND De Palm Island is the perfect day trip for families. This allinclusive experience is located on its own island and features a water park, signature snorkeling experiences, zip lining, banana boat rides, salsa lessons and more. HORSEBACK RIDING Aruba’s topography offers a variety of exotic locations for an adventurous horseback riding excursion. Choose between a relaxing ride along Aruba’s coastline, or take a more rugged route through one of Aruba’s national parks. Most ranches allow children six years and older to ride their own horse, and those six and under can ride with an adult.

15

BARBADOS SWIM WITH THE SEA TURTLES Barbados is home to a healthy population of hawksbill and leatherback sea turtles, who are protected and monitored throughout the island. To swim with the turtles, book a sailboat tour to one of the monitored areas, where the turtles can be found playing and feeding along the reefs. SURF’S UP Barbados is a surfer’s paradise, with year-round, world-class surfing for all skill levels. There are an abundance of surf schools, which offer lessons, guide services, rentals and more. For a once-in-a-lifetime surfing experience, take a Surf & Snorkel Boat Trip through Barry’s Surf Shop, which promises less crowded waves and the opportunity to swim and snorkel with sea turtles.

BONAIRE DONKEY SANCTUARY Donkeys have been a common sight on Bonaire since Spaniards brought them to the island in the 17th century. While they were originally brought over as work animals, today most of the donkeys on Bonaire are wild. The increasing population was a problem for the island until Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire began rescuing them from the streets, providing them with a new, donkey-friendly home. Visitors can tour the sanctuary to feed and pet more than 600 happy donkeys living on the large estate. DIVING AND SNORKELING Divi Flamingo Beach Resort & Casino’s Divi Dive Bonaire, a PADI five-star dive center and SSI dive facility, offers the whole family an opportunity to learn how to dive and get certified (children as young as ten can sign up). Divi Dive Bonaire also provides shore diving, boat diving and night diving excursions. Plus, getting geared up is easy with dive and snorkel rentals from the dive shop. With five dive boats and friendly instructors, you’ll see some of the best diving and snorkeling sites in the world.

ST. MAARTEN AQUA MANIA Aqua Mania Adventures has become the “go-to” for locals and tourists alike on St. Maarten looking for water sports, equipment rentals, scuba diving excursions and day trips to neighboring islands. Offering a wide range of family-focused experiences, you can spend the day exploring the sea or rent kayaks and wave runners and stay close to home base. Plus, you can also learn to sail or take the kids on a snorkeling adventure to Creole Rock. RAINFOREST ADVENTURES ZIP LINE Take a ride on the wild side on the world’s steepest zip line at Rockland Estate’s Rainforest Adventures eco–park on St. Maarten. The zip line, dubbed The Flying Dutchman, takes thrill-seekers down the mountain while harnessed in a chair, dropping 1,050 ft. in elevation over 2,800 ft. with stunning 360° views. For those searching for a more relaxing experience, Rainforest Adventures also offers chairlifts, mountain tubing, entry to the Emilio Wilson Museum and a restaurant.
