Greetings Key Clubbers, I hope you have enjoyed your summer thus far, as I have enjoyed mine. Use this time off from school wisely. Summer is a great time to bond as officers and make an action plan for the year. A strong board of officers is essential to a strong Key Club. I have high hopes for all of you this year; I hope to have more us in the Top 25 at District Convention than ever before! Each club is our division has so much potential, just keep up the hard work and dedication. Being in the Top 25 clubs at District Convention is such an honor because it lets everyone know that your club not only excelled in performing numerous hours of service but that your board of officers worked together to lead and motive your club to do great things for your home, schools, and communities. It is my hope and prayer that you remember this- when you get tired or overwhelmed by all that will come with the school year- what you do matters. Whether it be service, planning, creating, no matter what you do, it matters. It matters to your members, it matters to your school, it matters to the people you serve, and it certainly matters to me. If there ever comes a time when you just don’t know what to do, remember that you can come to me. That’s what I’m here for. I cannot wait to see what great things you all do this school year!

Yours in service,

Vanessa Lynn 5

Lemonade Saves Lives

Burleson sells lemonade to fund childhood cancer research On June 22, the Burleson High School Key Club sold lemonade outside a local grocery store. Through many glasses of lemonade and numerous donations, they were able to raise over $100 to donate to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foun-

dation has evolved- from a front-yard lemonade stand started by a 4 year-old cancer patient, Alexandra Scott, wanting to find a cure for all children with cancer- to a national fundraising movement dedicated to raising money to find a cure in honor of such a sweet girl.

Our divisional mascot, Oscar, even made an appearance at the event!

Enjoying the Summer Sun Paschal Key Clubbers gather together for a swim social To kick off a summer of service, our club chose to organize a social on Lake Worth during the week after school let out. Due to high water levels, recreational activities on the lake were closed, and we were unable to take the boat or jet skis out on the water. Despite our disappointment, our club can always find ways to have fun. We found so much to do at the lake house, like swimming in the pool, playing sand volleyball, ping pong, and air hockey. It was great to talk to everyone and hang out as a club, with a couple of new people joining us to see what Key Club is all about. An abundance of junk food was eaten, and it Photos and article submitted by Page began to truly feel like summer. We can’t Trotter wait to have more service projects and socials during the rest of the summer, and might even return to the lake for an end-ofsummer bash.

Bookmarks Boost Literacy Everman helps boost literacy by making bookmarks On June 4, after a club meeting, the Everman High School Key Club gathered together to create bookmarks. Now these weren’t just any bookmarks; for each bookmark that these Key Clubbers made, the Bezos Family Foundation donated $1.00 to Save the Children’s Literacy Boost

program in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The money raised by the challenge will be used to stock Save the Children’s international book banks in Peru, Mali, and Nepal.

Toppings &Thanks

Paschal serves ice cream to thank teachers for their hard work On the last day of school, Paschal Key Clubbers hosted an ice cream social to show their teachers how grateful they were to be taught by them and to thank them for trying hard to improve each student. Each member that came brought assigned materials; after school, the Key Clubbers set up a table for the teachers to choose which ice cream and

toppings they wanted. Vice President, Diana Lee said “It was really nice serving ice cream to our teachers because I could see how happy they were.” Lee has been to two ice cream socials for teachers throughout her high school career and thought “it was a nice way to end the school year.”

Saturday Storytime

North Crowley helps out with Barnes & Noble Storytime The North Crowley Key Club has an on-going service project with Barnes & Noble. A few Saturdays a month they volunteer to have a story time with whatever children come to the store that day. Afterwards, they do crafts with the children. This is a simple project that only requires a few Key Clubbers each week, and it allows you to interact directly with children in the community! Many other Barnes & Noble stores in the metroplex are looking for volunteers for events like this...just fyi...

Di st ric t Co nv en tio n 20 16 I know you are all going to do great things this year in your respective clubs. District Convention is a great time to be recognized for all of your hard work, through awards that will be given out, as well as through ads that appear in the convention booklet! Many clubs get ads for their club, their seniors, or their officers that year. Ads start at $25 and go up from there depending on size. Ads are how we pay for the convention, and the amount we sell as Lieutenant Governors determines the budget for the convention. So the more you all buy the better DCON will be in 2016! Email me ltg1S@tokeyclub.com about buying an ad or for more info! 15
