About Key Leader Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today's young leaders. This life-changing event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development experience. A Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of leadership—it comes from helping others succeed. Participants begin by attending a Key Leader conference, which is a weekend retreat. Large and small group workshops, discussions and team-building activities take place over the course of the weekend. Students have opportunities to learn leadership skills that will help them to change their schools, communities, and world for the better. While exploring leadership in a whole new way, participants will make amazing new friends and have experiences they will never forget. Positive, ongoing interaction with other Key Leader graduates offers continuing reinforcement, encouragement and growth of leadership skills.

 Plan Summer Service

My Awesome Experience By Emily Campbell, 2012-13 Key Club Secretary, Bandera High School Hands down, my most favorite service project that I've done so far in my year with Key Club, was when we went to the Haven for Hope in San Antonio. Haven for Hope is a nonprofit organization whose main objective is to transform homeless individuals. According to the Haven for Hope website, every night approximately 1,600 people inhabit the Haven for Hope Campus. It was nothing like I thought it would be, because truthfully, I thought it would be a small building and an even smaller amount of people, but once we got there, what stood before me surprised me. There were many buildings put together, all serving a different purpose, whether it be to house the once homeless people or to prepare the massive amounts of food that is needed. We found our way in and some cooks in a separate kitchen directed us where to go. We were led through a maze of rooms and smells, then finally arrived at the kitchen that we would be working in. One of the lunch ladies', the one that led us, told us to put on plastic gloves and a hair nets. All of us did this pretty quick, eager to start working and serving. Immediately, each and every one of us was assigned to a task, as there were many, many of them to be done before it was time for the lunch rush. The first task that I was assigned to do, along with many other members, was to clean the tables out in the lunchroom that the inhabitants sit down at. Everyone seemed to enjoy this and once it was done some of us took out trash, swept floors, helped prepare food, washed dishes, and anything else that needed to be done. It took a while to prepare lunch, but thankfully, the cooks had many hands to help and it got done a whole lot faster than it usually does. Once lunch was over, we had to start preparing dinner.

The thing that I never thought about is the amount of effort, time and money that goes into the types of organizations like Haven for Hope. On the outside, what you see says nothing about what goes on inside. Once you step inside, you're introduced to a whole different world that beckons you to reach out and help people, whether you thought you could or not. My personal experience was so humbling and rewarding, because I knew that some fraction of the homeless people in San Antonio were getting the nourishment they needed as well as the love and support of each other and the behind-the-scenes cooks. The most rewarding part of the experience was seeing the happy faces of all the people that walked through the line of the cafeteria. Each person smiled and said thank you to all of us behind the counter. At the end of the day, we helped so much, that I'm pretty sure they hadn't had food out that quick before in the history of their establishment. Sometime I want to go back and help for the whole day just to see the smiling faces once again.
