Yours in Service, Rosa Lee

Hey Division 3C! Can you believe it’s already March? I don’t know about you, but January felt like only a day ago. Although March is exciting because we have spring break and we are a step closer to summer (finally!), it also means that we have less than 60 DAYS UNTIL DCON!!! I hope you are thrilled because I sure am. That being said, I encourage all of you to start planning for DCON if you have not already. Remember to register before March 9th if you want early bird deals and check out the DCON Projected Cost Sheet that I emailed out in my February and March update. Keep up with the awesome volunteering!

Why Volunteering is Important to Me I’ve lived in Bellaire since before I can remember. (I moved here when I was two years old.) As the years have passed, the Bellaire community has accepted me with warm hearts. When I was a young child, I spent the summers at the Bellaire Recreation Center swimming, playing games, and most importantly, making friends. In middle school, I volunteered at Evelyn’s Park, a local park developed to benefit the local community, and helped them raise money. For high school, I went to Bellaire High School, forming new relationships with friends and teachers. All these experiences and more helped me see the importance of friendship and community. Through volunteering, I can give something back to the community, and specifically the people, who mean so much to me. When volunteering at Evelyn’s park, I could physically see the positive effect that volunteering can have on my local community. While we continued to raise money, the park went up simultaneously. With every trail and bench installed, and with every happy family that enjoyed the park, a warm feeling of accomplishment and contribution spread throughout me. When I entered high school and was looking for clubs to join to continue benefiting my community, Key Club seemed like the perfect opportunity to become involved in my school’s community. Also, I knew I could help the larger Bellaire community through Key Club’s volunteering efforts. I immediately signed up for Key Club at the annual club

festival meant to attract incoming freshmen. Since joining Key Club, I have had the honor to participate in a multitude of events that have benefitting not only my community, but communities all over the world. Though my efforts are no longer inspired and directed towards my original one, I have changed my view to see myself as part of a larger, all-encompassing community. Holding positions as secretary, webmaster, and co-president has allowed me to reach out to this new community while remaining close to the one at home as I make new friendships through the club every year. I originally started to volunteer for my friends and family in the hopes I could make their lives better. However, I now volunteer to help anyone and everyone, because we all need to support one another. - Samara Zuckerbrod Bellaire High School

ChildFund Are you looking for ways to fundraise money for DCON? As you already know, Texas-Oklahoma District Key Club launched a partnership with ChildFund International to help each other. ChildFund is an organization that reaches over 11 million people to strengthen families and communities to help break the cycle of poverty. It is a simple fundraising idea: all Key Clubbers are encouraged to recruit one committed sponsor for one child and in turn ChildFund will cover the cost of the Key Clubber’s DCON registration fee.
