VAIL GOLF CLUB FIRST COURSE IN COLORADO TO OFFER GOLF BIKES

New Option to Carts or Walking the Course

ew this summer, the Vail Golf Club is taking "green transportation" to a new level by introducing the Golf Bike as an alternative to walking or using a cart. Unveiled at the PGA Merchandise show in Florida in January, Vail will be the first course in Colorado to offer the bikes to its customers, which are designed to carry clubs, provide low impact transportation and increase fitness. There will be four bikes available to rent this summer while the course tests the bikes. Rentals will cost $15 for an 18-hole round. Vail Golf Club Director Alice Plain says, although it's a non-traditional method of playing golf, it combines the love of the game with the great outdoors and will be perfect for both avid cyclists and those who have trouble walking the course. "We're excited to offer the golf bike this summer and provide a 'green,' innovative and engaging means of transportation around the course," said Plain. "The low-impact bikes are perfect for golfers who have trouble walking the course, but would prefer to not ride a cart. It will be a unique experience for golfers of all abilities and the fun-factor will be priceless."

Designed from the ground up by Higher Ground Bicycling Company in Florida, the Golf Bike has a six-gear system, hand breaks, distributes weight evenly, has small-diameter wheels that require less pedaling to accelerate and is a fun, smooth ride. Plain says the bikes will offer similar speeds to a cart, are designed to be functional on varied terrain with minimal impacts on the course and allow golfers to bike to their ball for faster flow during their round. Pace of play for Golf Bike users will not change and will remain at 4:07 for an 18-hole round. The Vail Golf Club, operated by the Vail Recreation District, is a public course and will open for the season in mid-May, weather and course conditions permitting. Season pass sales will begin Wednesday, April 16 and offer a variety of options including transferable punch passes. Early season rates will be $64 for 18 holes or $42, including cart, through June 26. Leagues,

Manage Your Tempo to Control Your Putting Speed

ver the last 7 years I have come to the realization that speed control is far more important than hitting it on the perfect line and I can prove it. Take 5 balls and roll them down the longest hallway in your home. Try and ladder them out evenly long to short. I bet you didn’t worry about hitting the wall at all, did you? I bet your ladder doesn’t look perfect either. Most players cannot even see a good line without good speed control. I consider good speed control as the ability to roll the ball past the hole the same amount each time. Now, the distance you roll it past is up to you. I figure it out for each of my students like this; I ask them,” What is the longest putt that you can make 100% off the time? I mean, pressures on, for a million dollars, never miss.” Usually my students say somewhere around 1 to 2 feet. Whatever that distance is, that is the distance you should try and roll it past the hole. To practice this, use a credit card or driver’s license instead of a hole. Even if you

make it, you can see the ball roll through the card and out to a stop. You can hit putts from varying distances to the same card and watch the ball roll to a stop. What you will find is that this is really hard, and the reason is that your putting tempo might be all over the map. Two things control putting speed; the length of your stroke and your stroke speed or tempo. Better putters have the same stroke tempo for every putt. They just vary their stroke length. A good example

of this is a conductor of an orchestra. The conductor will always move their hands to the beat, but they will make bigger moves to get the orchestra to play louder and smaller moves to make them play softer, but they never lose the beat. A lot of my students vary their stroke length AND their tempo. This makes controlling the speed of a putt very hard. To fix this, use a simple the help keep the beat. There are many free metronome apps for your phone as well as training metronomes from companies like Eyeline Golf. Once you have one, we need to find a tempo that matches you. Most putters find that between 80 and 95 beats per minute is perfect. Experiment a little to find one that works for you. Once you have it, DON’T CHANGE IT. Practice at that tempo all the time. Go back to the credit card putting game and use the metronome. You will find that after a while you will control your speed better and reduce the wobbles, miss-hits and dreaded yips because you are now putting to the beat. The best way to use it is to start the stroke on beat 1, hit the ball on beat 2 and hold your finish for beats 3 and 4. Now all

you have to do is vary your stroke length and that is much easier than changing your tempo all the time.

CAPE GARDEN ROUTE. It connects Port Elizabeth to Cape Town about 800 miles west. At the airport, we met up with Warren our splendid host for the next nine days. I forgot to mention that I traveled with two of my fiercest golf tour competitors (John and Graham) who also happen to be nice guys and fun to travel with. Before heading west on the Garden Route, we detoured a bit to a marvelous luxury Private Game Reserve called PUMBA. At this point I thought the “hell with golf”; I’m staying here for the next 9 days. The accommodations, the food, our game guide Harry and the animal encounters on the 37,000 acre game reserve exceeded my expectations. But, this was also a trip to discover what South Africa can offer the golfer while not facing down lions, rhinos and elephants. So, on we went with our host/driver to see what we could find. About three hours along the Route, is the small town of Knysna and the splendid CONRAD PEZULA Resort. This 78 suites resort has awesome views over its golf course, garden and the Indian Ocean. The deluxe junior suites are located in separate villas each with fireplaces, large balconies and impressive bathrooms. Dinner at Zachary’s, the resort gourmet restaurant, lived up to its impressive reputation. Though Pezula has a fine golf course, a better one is the SIMOLA GOLF ESTATE nearby. This Jack Nicklaus Signature courses is set in surroundings that will draw your eye from your ball to your view. It cost me a few strokes. The layout with five Par 5’s and five Par 3’s seems a bit odd, but adds to the fun. A charming alternative accommodation in the area is the KANONKOP HOUSE a Five Star guest house owned and operated by its welcoming host Mark. The finest golf resort in the country is FANCOURT HOTEL & COUNTRY

CLUB located only five miles from the historic town of George. With luxury rooms, one and two bedroom suites, a terrific spa, fine restaurants and three golf courses to choose from, Fancourt has it all. We played THE LINKS course and the easier OUTENIQUA course. The Links is rated as the number two course in South Africa and is a true joy. It’s a walking course and caddies are required and appreciated by anyone

whose ball occasionally goes astray. The MONTAGU is second to The Links and like the Outeniqua offers carts. Our next stop along the Garden Route was at the ARABELLA HOTEL & SPA, but before arriving we stopped to play Ernie Els Signature Course OUBAAI. Though a bit out of the way, Oubaai is a treat with fantastic views of the ocean and mountains. The HYATT OUBAAI HOTEL offers quality rooms and amenities on the property. The Arabella Hotel is modern and comfortable and the course is a treat. Several holes meander through a pine forest while others

On the way to Cape Town we stopped at ERNIE ELS WINERY for a tour, a tasting and lunch on the properties expansive patio overlooking Ernie’s vineyard. Just outside of Cape Town is a wonderful and historic hotel – THE VINEYARD. The original part of the hotel was built in 1799. Six acres of gardens, modern rooms with inviting patios give guest privacy to enjoy the surroundings. With the Vineyard as our base, we explored CAPE TOWN. It is a sophisticated city with a delightful temperate climate and the bustle one expects in a major port. Though there are several excellent hotels in Cape Town, the CAPE GRACE HOTEL offers a great location, beautiful public spaces and sumptuous rooms. Located in the Marina area overlooking the commercial harbor on one side and the yacht marina on the other, Cape Grace is ideal for exploring the city or relaxing. The

hotel’s BASCULE BAR is a must for predinner drinks. Our final round of golf before flying off to KRUGER NATIONAL PARK and LEOPARD CREEK GOLF CLUB, which I wrote about in my first article, was at STEENBERG GOLF CLUB. The course is located on the grounds of a lovely hotel re-purposed from original Cape Dutch designed stables and out buildings. Interesting architecture and antiques create a comfortable deluxe atmosphere for guests. The golf course is considered one of the best in the country and offers challenge and reward on virtually every hole. By now you must have come to the conclusion that I think South Africa should be on every ones Bucket List. Please note that even though I was able to cross South Africa off my bucket list, it is back on. I’M GOING AGAIN….WHY DON’T YOU JOIN ME. D

High Hops Brewery Unveils Special Pelican Lakes Lager

et your taste buds ready Windsor. In March the much-anticipated unveiling of Pelican Lakes Lager beer occurred during a special one-timeonly event held at High Hops Brewery. The small brewery has partnered with the semi-private Pelican Lakes Golf and Country Club, both located in Windsor, on a light beer. “The beer is has come along very nicely,” said Zach Weakland, the head brewer at High Hops Brewery, which is located at 6461 Hwy. 392 in Windsor. “It’s very clean and is very drinkable.” The only place the beer can be purchased is on draft at the newly remodeled Pelican Lakes Country Club restaurant, located at 1620 Pelican Lakes Point, and its soon-toopen lower-level Sand Bar. The collaboration between a brewery and a golf course is unique to the area as both parties believe Pelican Lakes Lager will be the only golf course-specific beer offered in the state. “We’ve done smaller collaborations, but never done a large exclusive beer for an establishment so we’re really excited about this opportunity,” Weakland said earlier this year. “We’re shooting for the perfect golf beer. It’s going to be a nice and refreshing beer you can drink on a warm, sunny day and not get too full off of it.” This first batch of the Lager, which presents a crisp taste and resembles a typical domestic light beer, was started about two months ago, and is making its debut around the same time as the conclusion of the Pelican Lakes restaurant remodel.

Earlier this year, Water Valley Land Company CEO Martin Lind said, “Our guests will be stunned when they see our new look. They will be thrilled when they see our new menu. They will be ecstatic when they pull down a

2014 Dodge Durango Limited AWD By Karl O’Keefe Divot Vehicle Test Drive Writer t’s been a little while since my last vehicle test drive and the 2014 Dodge Durango Limited AWD was a great way to get back in the saddle. Durango’s lineage can be broken down, roughly, into three generations. The first-gen, produced from 1998 through 2003, was a sturdy, midsize SUV with a body-on-frame construction shared with the Dakota, Dodge’s popular midsize pickup. The second-gen Durango appeared in 2004 and was a few inches taller, wider, and longer edging it into the full-sized SUV category. It was at that time the Durango began offering third-row seating and a redesigned suspension for a more luxurious ride. Generation three began in 2010 by introducing the Internet for the very first time. In 2012 the Durango earned the Drivers’ Choice Award from the editors of Motorweek, and it ranked as a “Top Safety Pick” with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

What’s New In 2014? For starters the Dodge Durango gets much improved fuel economy, upgraded interior including an easy touchscreen and voice control dashboard system and a few attractive upgrades on the exterior.

Per formance: While the Durango Limited has a strong throttle response and surprisingly good power with plenty of acceleration, this SUV can go nearly 500 miles on a single tank, at a cost of just over $80. The ride is extremely solid and strong for a vehicle that is almost 17 feet long. The new 8-speed automatic makes for a very smooth and even transition to highway speeds. The ZF transmission is also responsible for a 20% increase in fuel economy. Interior: As for the interior, the front seat comfort is excellent . All Durangos are 7 passenger vehicles with three in the second row and two in the very back. For a little more Dodge will remove the middle seat and insert a pair of more comfortable captain’s chairs with a center console, cup holders and a storage compartment. And if you are the one picking up the entire 4-some on the way to the course, not to worry. The Durango can easily accommodate all 4 players and their golf bags with plenty of room to spare. On the dash, Connect 2 features well polished graphics and screen changes including a large, bright display. An upgraded voice command system works very well and the USB/iDevice control and smartphone integration allows you to stream

audio. You can also have text messages read to you, dictate replies and search for restaurants or businesses via Yelp. There are also little details like a push button for the driver to remotely fold down the head restraints on the third-row seats. And for us Colorado drivers struggling through our cold winters, the Durango's quickly heated steering wheel gets hot to the touch, not just a little warm.

Fear and Loathing of the Female Golfer Feature

olf is fun? Yeah RIGHT - Well ok, it is now that I know what I am doing, I'll give it that much. Over the years, whenever someone invited me to play golf for recreational and/or business purposes, I remember having a sinking feeling. Like, Crap! I have to do this?! But do I really want to?! It always seemed so cumbersome for me... pick an outfit that looks cute, make sure you have clubs that will do the job, make sure the bag doesn't weigh a ton, and how are you supposed to hold the bag properly again? AND shoes! Don't forget about the shoes for goodness sake! Wait, what? There are nine more holes after the first nine we already played! ARE YOU SERIOUS!!! Take me straight to the 19th hole please. All this and having the skill to hit the little white ball with a stick? Trust me it

takes skill. Keep your head down, assume a good stance, turn your hips, or was that turn your shoulders? Don't look at where the ball goes, swing out and behind, blah blah blah blah blah. How am I supposed to remember all these details and still have a good time? My history with golf goes back to when I graduated high school and worked at a golf course and years later at a golf academy. Back then, when someone came in the pro shop asking for a sand wedge, I said, "Oh you can get one at the restaurant." And when asked to call golfers to the tee, I announced over the P.A. "The Jones Onesome can head over to the first tee," while everyone on the driving range broke out in laughter. Speaking to many first time female golfers, I have come to realize we share the same hesitation and frustration. There’s the fear of being reprimanded because we don't get it. Or we don't swing the club correctly, or the people we are with are starting to lose their patience. Honestly, swinging and missing isn't a pretty sight, and it can be very frustrating. So what do most women do? We give up. After a few bad experiences we just say forget it. Of course that's not a good attitude, but it’s so much better than the frustration that comes with trying and failing.

My game was equally embarrassing, but I wasn’t laughing. A few years later I purchased a brand new set of Nike clubs and bag, a Nike outfit and Nike golf shoes. Boy did I look the part! I headed down to the driving range from my car and actually look like I knew what I am doing. HA! I put the golf ball down and took a swing. Wow that felt good! Except for the fact that the ball remained in the same spot and I am turned 180 degrees in the other direction. Embarrassed... Ok, I tried again. This time I decide if I swing harder it would work.... A Swing and a Miss!!! Really? This sucks. So years pass and I still continue to dread going out on the golf course. I cringe when asked to play and stress until it is all over or I’ve had enough to drink to the point that it really didn’t matter. Why has it been so difficult for me over the years? Why did I develop this dislike but HAVE TO PLAY attitude. Until I worked at the golf academy it hadn't made sense. But then it hit me. You wouldn't have a first time skier go to the peak of the mountain, get on a double black diamond run and say good luck, see you at the bottom. She can look the part, with the skis, the gloves, the whole gamut, but put her at the top of the mountain and she’s going to have a few issues to say the least. as dramatic as being put on top of a mountain, but it can be just as terrifying. So what does one do as a first-time skier? Start slowly with an instructor and develop the skills on the bunny hill. Having everyone tell you how to get on and off the ski lift, how to turn, and all the other things you need to know to get down the mountain is overwhelming and wont help. Just as in skiing, most everyone who plays golf thinks they can teach golf. Not so. Before you even purchase the "right" set of clubs, before you even buy your first pair of golf shoes, you should seek out a professional and be analyzed. NO JOKE. I know this sounds like a huge undertaking and a pain. But trust me... it’s better to learn from a professional who has patience and complete knowledge of the game rather than 3 of your co-workers telling you all at once what to do? Having the confidence of going out there because you have learned proper form and technique makes a world of difference. Additionally most clubs purchased by golfers aren’t the correct fit for them. Peter Norwood, one of The PGA Pro Staff Instructors at The MetaGolf Academy located in Englewood, CO explains, “Most everyone is different in the way they swing the golf club; therefore each person has their own unique style.” Over the years I have come to learn that if you are engaging in the sport of golf, do it the right way. Get lessons from a PGA pro. It's worth the time and the money. But keep in mind that’s not enough. Like everything else, it takes patience, practice and time. And now I have developed more of a love/hate relationship for golf, like everyone else, rather than a hate/anxiety feeling. I feel more confident, I am more knowledgeable and I am not afraid to smack that little white ball any more. In fact, I still want to kill the ball, just as payback for all the years of embarrassment it has caused me. Speaking to several woman it seems that they are most interested in group lessons with other friends or woman. They find it to be less rigid, and more relaxing and enjoyable. Most courses have group lesson packages in additional to individual lessons so don’t hesitate calling a course near you. Take a lesson, learn the proper way to play before playing, get the anxiety out of the way, go play with confidence and enjoy the game of golf! ust over six months after the September 2013 floods in Colorado, the popular mountain destination of Estes Park has almost fully recovered. The economy of the small community, known as the base camp for Rocky

Mountain National Park, is almost entirely dependent on tourism. Luckily, residents were able to rally immediately following the flood, coming together to rebuild the town and their hope for once again welcoming guests.

Famous for wildlife and outdoor recreation in the surrounding mountains, Estes Park welcomes more than two million travelers each year. In addition to the amazing mountain adventures, the town features breathtaking views, a robust downtown and picturesque golf courses to round out the area’s attractions. All of that was threatened by the floodwaters in September. “There was water covering the main street and gushing into some of the shops and restaurants along the popular river walk,” explained Brooke Burnham, Director of Communications for Visit Estes Park, the destination marketing organization. “We didn’t know what would be left, or in what condition, once the waters receded. Luckily, this ‘Mountain Strong’ community quickly triumphed through the challenges and rebuilt faster than anyone expected.” Many of the downtown shops were open within a couple of days and the destination very quickly reopened its “doors” to guests, who are a welcome sight to this tourism-based town. Both of the major highways leading into Estes Park from the east were severely damaged as well, however the Colorado Department of Transportation, with assistance from private contractors and the National Guard were able to open them in a matter of weeks, days ahead of schedule. The first weekend that the main roads were open travelers came from as far away as Europe to access the national park and show their support for the recovering community. By the holidays more than 90% of the town’s businesses had repaired

flood damage and reopened their doors. The two golf courses in town, Lake Estes 9 Hole Golf Course and the Estes Park 18 Hole Golf Course did sustain considerable damage from the flood. The Lake Estes 9 Hole Course became completely covered by the Big Thompson River during the event. Damage from silt and mud has been cleaned up and will be open for the coming season. The Estes Park 18 Hole Course lost most of the signature hole #17. Fish Creek completely redesigned the layout of the hole. Reconstruction began in March and completion expected in Early April. The new look and challenge of the hole will only add to what many visitors consider to be a great golf course. The Estes Park 18 Hole Course will soon be open and ready to accommodate tournaments, company golf outings, wedding groups and reunions. There is not a better mountain golf, player friendly, experience in the state than in Estes Park. Beautiful 360 degree Rocky Mountain vistas and various wildlife visitors make Estes Park Golf Courses a spectacular destination to swing the clubs. Estes Park has more recreation than hiking and golfing. With a marina, parks, and indoor swimming pool, the community has a something for everyone. The entire Estes Valley community is going to be ready to help visitors create new, unforgettable memories. “It’s easy to think of the quick recovery as a miracle,” Burnham said, “but the reality is that it’s the result of a lot of hard work done by determined residents and volunteers, that was fueled by the support of our guests.”

15th Annual CNI Golf Classic to be Held at Bear Dance to Benefit Patients

This annual tournament raises funds and awareness for individuals facing neurological conditions.

n Monday, July 14th, Colorado Neurological Institute (CNI) will hold the 15th Annual Golf Classic at the Golf Club at Bear Dance to support individuals facing neurological conditions such as stroke, brain and spinal tumor, head pain, Parkinson’s Disease, multiple sclerosis and many others. The tournament will include: 18-hole four person scramble format, longest drive, closest to the pin, putting contest, breakfast, lunch, range balls, cart, optional mulligan’s and prizes. Last year’s tournament raised more than $40,000. Without fundraisers such as the CNI Golf Classic, CNI would not be able to offer a resource center for individuals facing neurological conditions. CNI’s tournament players are community partners, patients and golf enthusiasts. Each of them serves as an ambassador and storyteller for the organization. Since 1988, CNI has been providing re-
