Use Your Legs for Power & Control By Nathan Morris DIVOT Contributing Writer Let’s face it, we all want to hit the ball a little farther. The problem is that we don’t use our biggest muscles to do it. Today we are going to discuss the right way to use your legs in the downswing to add some speed and to help control the bottom of your swing arc a little better.

After 14 years of teaching at GOLFTEC, I’ve learned that a lot of my students are unaware or misinformed about how their legs actually work in the downswing. Most golfers have been told to start their downswing by “clearing” or “turning” their hips to start the downswing. Unless you’re built like Gumby, this move will probably cause you to swing over-the-top or outside-in because turning first drags the hands out, towards the target line too early. This leads to slices, pulls and heel hits. What we really need is for your hands to stay back, away from the target line as long as they can so you can deliver the club on the proper plane. To move the legs properly in the downswing, you want to picture your hips moving up a spiral staircase. There is an element of lateral slide or sway, upward drive with the knees and turning or twisting. All of these moves need to happen in the right order so that you can add speed, control your low point of your arc and swing on the proper plane. The first move in the downswing is actually a lateral shift towards the target. When GOLFTEC conducted their SWINGTru Motion Study, they found that the average tour player starts their downswing by shifting their hips 1.1” towards the target. This initial shift is the start of the spiral and happens before any turning or twisting. It shifts the weight to the lead leg and compresses the lead knee in preparation for pushing up and around the spiral. This move also allows time

for the arms and club to come down into the plane before the rotation starts. As an added bonus, it also helps move the low point of the arc towards the target and in front of the ball. Some people have described this move as a bump of the hips towards the target. The next move is to start pushing your belly button up and towards the target. This move actually starts happening before impact. Most of us have been told to stay down or keep your head down for most of your golfing life. This thought process pretty much turns off the legs. Most great hitters of the ball start to raise their belly button and straighten their legs just before impact. If you want the legs to be straight at impact, you have to start the process a little earlier. So, after the small bump towards the target, the lead leg starts pushing up and straightening as the club approaches the ball. In a perfect world, the lead leg is pretty much straight at impact. This upward drive is what you see players like Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson and Lexi Thompson doing when they seem to jump off the ground at impact. They drive up with their legs so hard that they leave the ground. I don’t often recommend that much,

but it’s definitely how they hit the ball so far. If you do these moves correctly, you should finish with straighter legs, your belly button pointing towards the target and in front of your lead foot. Your trail leg should be straight-ish and be completely up on that toe. A great, at home drill for this is called the light switch drill. Stand with your lead foot a few inches away from a wall with a light switch on it. You shouldn’t have a club in your hands. In fact, put your arms across your shoulders. Make a small, imaginary backswing, then shift then push up like you are trying to flip the light switch with your belly button. Colorado’s Next Course...

RainDance National Golf Club in Windsor

RainDance National Golf Club will be the latest course opening in Colorado and is in the RainDance master-planned community of Windsor, less than a mile west of its sister course, the 27-hole Pelican Lakes Golf Club. Once completed, The Water Valley Company will own and operate 45 holes in Windsor. Funk, the winner of The Players Championship in 2005, is working alongside world-renowned golf course architect Harrison Minchew and are in the initial phases of construction of RainDance National Golf Club. They have shaped, temporary seeded and installed drainage on four-anda-half holes – holes #1 through #4 and a portion of #18. vated terrain and stretch to 8,014 yards from the back tees. The course will feature four par 5s and five par 3s. The spacious fairways will be seeded 50-50 with fescue and Kentucky bluegrass and the rest of the landscape will feature native plants such as sage grass, yucca, rabbitbush and cactus. Per Funk’s recommendation, RainDance National will play dry and fast and accessible for golfers of every ability. An enormous 65,000 square foot short game practice area, also referred to as the Horse Course, is located near holes 1 and 9 and offer golfers not only an opportunity to practice, but also another venue for members and guests to maintain their competitiveness. Barring severe weather, construction of RainDance National will continue through the 2020-21 winter season.

The pandemic took a variety of valued activities away from all of us in 2020, including the award-winning In The Fairway radio show on 1043 The Fan. The boys of summer, Jerry Walters and Mike Castorino continued to broadcast last year on Facebook Live every Saturday morning to stay engaged with their loyal listeners. But, the boys are back! Switching to a different day, Sunday from 8-10am, the lively golf talk show is back on the airwaves. The move to Sunday came about because the station, during the interim, had plugged in a year-long one hour show, eliminating the possibility of bringing everything golf back on Saturday for two hours. The show will run consistently through the end of September which is the conclusion of the Ryder Cup. In The Fairway features national guests such as Tiger’s caddy, Joe LaCava, Duane Bock, looper for Kevin Kisner, Jim “Bones” MacKay, longtime friend and caddy for Phil Mickelson and Paul Tesori, Webb Simpson’s caddy. These and others are heard during the weekly Caddy Chat segment. Other guests include Damon Hack from Golf Channel, major tournament winners, and other national and international luminaries from

the world of golf. Jerry Walters has been in the golf media in Colorado for 28 years and has been recognized repeatedly for his work by the Colorado Golf Association, the Colorado PGA, the CoBank Colorado Open and recently was given the Distinguished Service Award by the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame. He spent 10 years on the PGA and Korn Ferry Tours as a manufacturer’s representative for Yes! putters. Mike Castorino, a self proclaimed golf geek, played D1 golf for Providence College as well as playing internationally. Mike brings his knowledge, perspective and his joy of the game to the show as Jerry’s sideman. D

putting, causing more putts to be in the jar, is the Arm Lock putting method. Tour players have incorporated this style and have witnessed considerable improvement in their strokes gained on the putting greens during tour events. The question becomes, is it for you?

There are a few modifications you need to consider before you leap ahead with this efficient arm locking approach. First, the shaft of the putter needs to extend to about 2” just below your elbow crease. Usual Arm Lock putters have an increased head weight of around 380-400 grams, which is 30-50 grams heavier than a normal length putter. Putter heads can be altered to be heavier by adding lead tape to the sole. The grip of an Arm Lock form of putting is between 17"21” and can be easily found at most golf retailers. Here’s the tricky part: since the putter is now leaning forward against your forearm, more loft needs to be added, 6°-8° of loft, so as not to continually drive the ball into the ground at impact. You may also consider turning the grip by 90° so the flat part is positioned against your forearm.

Why would you consider Arm Lock putting? If you are overly handsy, flip at impact and notice the ball being launched above the green surface, Arm Lock is perfect for you. With practice, you’ll soon become adept at keeping the grip firmly against your arm and eliminating the flipping motion.

The simple stroke with the Arm Lock technique keeps the head of the putter locked in place so there’s very little if any rotation through the stroke. This method can improve efficiency and result in hitting putts on line rather than over rotating throughout the stroke.

The basic difference between the Arm Lock style of putting and true anchoring as in the belly and chest putters is that the butt end of the putter is still moving with Arm Lock. It’s free swinging and anchored just as much as a putter held in the hands. There are some pundits who now accuse players of being “too good” when anchoring the putter against their forearm and suggest that it should also be banned from competition. If players feel that way about Arm Lock putting, then why isn’t it used by a greater majority of the tours around the world?

The Arm Lock method isn’t a magic bullet, but it can produce results for those who struggle to create a consistent stroke and delivery at impact. Just remember to contact a Master Putter Fitter with a putter loft and lie machine if you plan on adopting this style. D
