CGA and Colorado PGA Join Forces for New Junior Golf
The future of junior golf in Colorado is in good hands with the announcement that the Colorado PGA and the Colorado Golf Association are teaming up for an epic junior golf program coming in 2016! Following a year of in-depth discussions on the future of junior golf in Colorado, the CPGA and CGA agreed the collaboration was in the best interest of the golf industry in Colorado and more importantly junior golfers and parents.
So, what does this mean?
After 31 years, the CJGA is being retired and will now be operating a joint junior development series and tour events for 2016.
The new tournament structure features a Junior Tour with nationally ranked, multiday events and four major championships throughout the season. Their Junior Series, designed for up-and-coming players, will offer 18- and 9-hole options for kids aged 11-13 and 14-18 while our 10 and Under division will play some of the best par-3 courses in the state. This new structure will cater to any and all levels of junior golfers!
The four major championships, Colorado PGA Junior Championship, Colorado Junior Amateur Championship, Colorado Junior Match Play Championship, and the Junior Tour Championship will be open to
all members through exemptions and qualifiers with both boys and girls divisions competing at the same venues!
In addition to being your one-stop-shop for competitive junior golf, the Player Development Pathway will also embrace the core programs of each association including Golf in Schools, PGA Junior League, Drive Chip & Putt Championship, partnerships with in-state national qualifying events, instructional camps and clinics and much more. Additionally, it will serve as a portal to college golf with a vast array of free counseling opportunities and assistance programs.
The re-branding of this partnership is still underway. Currently work is still being done towards creating a new logo and website of the yet-to-be named association. The new website will act as a clearinghouse for all things junior golf, including PGA Member and facility programs, instructional opportunities, in-school and after-school programming, tournament registration, and other resources for players and parents alike. Keep up with their progress by stopping by Junior Golf Central at the Denver Mart during the 2016 Denver Golf Expo, Friday, February 19 through Sunday, February 21. D

Serving Blue Moon Craft Beers at Denver Golf Expo
By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributing Writer
The 2016 Denver Golf Expo will officially serve a selection of craft beers from Blue Moon Brewing Company®, where they believe brewing is an art. And it’s been that way since head brewmaster and founder, Keith Villa, first created Blue Moon® Belgian White Belgian-Style Wheat Ale back in 1995 in downtown Denver, Colorado. It all started with Keith’s idea to craft a beer inspired by the flavorful Belgian Wits that he enjoyed while studying brewing in Belgium. He brewed his interpretation using the highest quality ingredients like Valencia orange peel, versus the traditional tart Curaçao orange peel, for a subtle sweetness. Then he added oats and wheat to create a smooth,
creamy finish that is inviting to the palate. As a final touch, he garnished the beer with an orange slice to heighten the citrus aroma and taste.
Even better, at the Denver Golf Expo, Blue Moon Brewing Company will be pouring 6 of their craft beers for attendees: • Belgian White – served with an orange, of course! • White IPA • Cinnamon Horchata Ale • Peach Ale (Spring Seasonal) • Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy • Pilsner Urquell

Why You Want to Know About RoundForeKids.org By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributing Writer
That golf habit of ours is expensive, but as any golfer will tell you, so worth the time and money. When introducing the game of
golf to your constantly growing children, well, that just rang up the cash register another notch. The added expense of outgrowing golf clubs – well there is now a solution for that. Enter in Rounds Fore Kids.
Colorado Golf Foundation and CGA’s Centennial By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributing Writer
The Colorado Golf Foundation was founded in late 2012 by a lead gift of $2 million from philanthropist and oil and gas entrepreneur, George Solich and his wife, Carol. Since this generous gift, the Foundation has raised an additional $405,000 in two years of community fundraising. To celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of the Colorado Golf Association, the Century of Golf Gala was held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs in mid-November. Emceed by Channel 2 Anchor Tom Green, the Gala featured a retrospective of 100 Years of Golf in Colorado and honored six “People of the Century”. The featured guest of the evening was Jack Nicklaus who entertained the audience with a casual fireside chat moderated by Golf Digest
14
writer and Golf Channel Insider Tim Rosaforte. Recognized and honored for their impact on the game locally and nationally were 6 Colorado golf “People of the Century”: Will Nicholson Jr. (Man of the Century), Judy Bell (Woman of the Century), Hale Irwin (Male Player of the Century), Barbara McIntire (Female Player of the Century), Charles "Vic" Kline (Golf Professional of the Century) and Dennis Lyon (Superintendent of the Century). The event raised $380,000 for the Colorado Golf Foundation -- and its mission to provide funding for Colorado-based golf organizations and programs that use golf to build important life skills and character, with an emphasis on instilling hard work and self-reliance in young people. According to Casey A. Schiel, PGA, President & Founder of Rounds Fore Kids, “We want to make golf more affordable for kids to play.” With a mission statement like “Growing junior golf by introducing and continually educating kids about the game of golf through affordable and resourceful youth player development programs,” Rounds Fore Kids will create an opportunity for any junior wanting to play the game. According to Schiel, Rounds Fore Kids has four primary areas of concentration to grow junior golf in the Denver metro area: • Offer on-course rounds of golf and practice opportunities at their local golf facility. • Delivery affordable and property fitted golf equipment through the RFK Annual Club Membership program. • Connect kids with their local PGA Golf Professional and pay a portion of their individual golf instruction. • Encourage and sponsor juniors to play in fun and competitive tournaments to expand their experience.
Forget about shelling out money for expensive clubs every time your young golfer outgrows them. Perhaps the most exciting Round Fore Kids initiative is to allow your junior golfer to grow with their clubs by renting fitted golf equipment each year. The 2016 RFK Annual Club Membership includes a full set of properly fitted golf clubs fitted by height, a carry stand bag, custom RFK bag tag, and an RFK Junior
Golf Guide for Denver Colorado for only $150. Round Fore Kids is invested in the junior golf experience. Existing members who return their outgrown golf equipment within 1 calendar year will receive a new club membership 50% off new membership, and after 2 calendar discounted membership is 30% off! Applications open online at RoundForeKids.org. Prefer a hand’s on experience? Stop by the Round Fore Kids booth at the Denver Golf Expo, where 30 set of golf clubs will be ready to be fitted and rented! Parents and their junior golfers can leave the Expo with their clubs! In addition, Round Fore Kids will be offering pitching lessons, free for golfers of all ages. The free 5 minute lesson will work on the short game and pitching fundamentals with a PGA golf professional. After your lesson, you will receive a pitching report card with notes from your instructor. While visiting the Round Fore Kids booth, be sure to ask for more information about its junior programs and the upcoming Junior Golf Guide. For more information, go to RoundForeKids.org. D

os Cabos, Mexico — With five award-winning resorts in Cabo San Lucas, robust real estate communities, and last year’s successful opening of Quivira Golf Club, Pueblo Bonito Oceanfront Resorts and Spas has already shown a deep and serious interest in the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. The operator of world-class facilities is significantly increasing its commitment to the region with a planned investment of more than $120 million across its Los Cabos properties in 2016. A major expansion is in the works for Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort, the finest adults-only property in Los Cabos. Two new towers, with a total of 47 rooms, will be added, including a magnificent Presidential Suite and six suites each with a private pool. The two buildings will be called Quivira Club and will feature enhanced room amenities as well as first-class, personalized service highlighted by a butler on each floor to attend to any and all guest needs. Pacifica also will add a third new building, a three-story tower with a different amenity on each level. On the first floor will be an eclectic Mexican-Mediterranean fusion restaurant with indoor and outdoor oceanfront dining. The second-floor gym will offer dramatic ocean views and stateof-the-art exercise equipment. The third floor—accessible by sky bridge from the other new buildings—will be a VIP lounge open only to Quivira Club guests, serving light breakfast, afternoon snacks, and preand after-dinner cocktails while overlooking the ocean. Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Golf & Spa Resort is also expanding, with the addition of 104 villas and a brand new upscale dining court offering a choice of restaurants that include family-friendly, Asian, and Italian, as well as separate areas specializing in desserts,
L
beers, and wines. A new Teens Club, which will feature arcade games, table games such as air hockey and pool, a movie theater, and a snack bar are planned. The recreational club will be a great addition to the family- oriented resort amenities, and is expected to be complete in the spring of 2016. “Pueblo Bonito Resorts has made and will continue to make a major commitment in the Los Cabos area,” said Enrique Gandara, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We firmly believe that Los Cabos represents the ultimate location for homebuyers and resort guests, and will continue to deliver experiences that attract both audiences. These additions are not our final investment, but merely reflect our ongoing investment in this region.” Future hotel projects for this area are being investigated. Within the Quivira residential community, 2016 will also bring the next phase of development at Copala, which ultimately will include 85 houses and seven 6-floor buildings, each with 36 apartments, including 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom units. The development will also offer its own clubhouse, in addition to the Quivira Beach Club. The 22-acre Coronado community, terraced below the newly built Copala development, has broken ground and will feature 68 one-story, Mexican hacienda-style homes that honor the region’s architectural heritage. Set on a desert ridge high above the sea, Coronado is the newest and most exclusive residential community within Quivira Los Cabos. The new towers at Pacifica and the dining area at Sunset Beach are scheduled to open by Fall 2016. Drill Your Driver UP for Deep Drives! By Chad Miller DIVOT Contributing Writer hances are you’ve worked on hitting down into the ball and taking a divot in front of it for solid contact and piercing shots at the target. But it’s good to note that while that can do wonders for your iron game, the descending angle of attack can wreak havoc if copied with the driver because of the club’s longer length and lack of loft, so here’s a simple drill to make sure you swing UP on the ball to bomb it with the big stick.
C
Drill your Driver UP • Tee up your driver like usual and place another peg into the ground about four inches in front of it along the target line about the same height as your teed-up ball. • Place a third tee about two inches behind the teed-up ball along the target

much dynamic loft at impact and even make you hit the ground behind the ball, neither of which are good for long, consistent drives. If you miss the back tee but hit the forward tee with these shots (shown center below) … your angle of approach is descending too much, which means your upper body has likely moved too far toward the target or ball, and that you have incon-
sistent contact, “ballooned” shots with too much spin, and varying trajectory patterns from swing to swing. If you miss both tees (shown at right below) … nice job! You’re likely now within a desirable range for angle of approach with your driver (generally anywhere from 2–5 degrees moving UP into the ball for most amateurs is ideal, although many variables determine this), and your face contact, spin rates and ball speed are closer to being maximized for long, towering drives! laying in, and experiencing the Golf Fore Kids tournament, is a fantastic way to play the game you love, warm your heart and truly put you in the spirit of giving. Golf Fore Kids is held every December in the golf mecca of Mesquite, Nevada. The tournament provides assistance to deserving children and families in the greater Mesquite area, from Beaver Dam, Arizona to the Moapa Valley in Nevada during the holiday season. The tournament entry fee is unique, as participants only need to bring a gift, valued at $50 or greater, to share with the families in need. I had the pleasure of participating in the 2015 Golf Fore Kids tournament on the ‘Golf Mesquite’ team. As we arrived at the course, we were greeted by Mesquite Police Officers and Fire Department personnel, who collected the donated toys and gifts and loaded them onto a large semitruck. Toys were collected from 4 different golf courses in Mesquite, and were displayed at the tournament awards luncheon. It was very moving to see hundreds, if not thousands of toys, and witness the generosity of the small community of Mesquite. The numerous businesses, volunteers, sponsors and participants truly made the holidays for many children and families.

11th Annual Event 2015 Tournament Results The 11th Annual Golf Fore Kids Tournament held on Dec 10th, 2015 was a resounding success! 4 golf courses, 528 golfers, 142 hole sponsors, and dozens of volunteers made the event possible once again. The generosity of this community is
astounding and every year the event generates more interest and most importantly, more toys!!! Three trailers were packed to the brim with balls, trucks, dolls, legos, and 145 bikes and scooters. And that is no small feat to assemble and collect in one day. The field was cut at 528 golfers and sadly dozens of golfers had to be turned away. The courses were filled in 30 days and others were put on waiting lists. Next year the tournament will open October 1st and golfers can register online at www.golfforekidsnv.org. Falcon Ridge, Conestoga, Canyons, and the Palms golf courses once again generously donated their course so golfers could play with only the expense of bringing toys. The Casablanca tent was also donated for the luncheon, prizes, and raffle. Without these incredible businesses, this tournament would not be possible. The toys are first used to fill the needs of the Mesquite Salvation Army Angel Tree program. The remaining toys are distributed between Littlefield/Beaver Dam and Moapa/Logandale which helps bring Christmas to another couple hundred children. Because of a wonderful raffle response, thousands of dollars will be donated to the Mesquite Shop with a Cop program. The tournament brought in approximately $47,000 which puts the combined donation value over the last 11 years at well over $400,000. But it is not just about the numbers, it is about the smiles on the kids faces when they receive a special toy they might not have had if this event didn’t happen. So thank you!!! To the golf courses, the tent event center, the interact club, the local police and fire departments, the salvation army, all the volunteers, and especially all the golfers. Fitness
Improve the swing you already have!
By AJ Holdsworth DIVOT Contributing Writer
ith one simple drill you can improve the golf swing you already have while improving your golf fitness. Not only can the drill be done just about anywhere, but also the drill improves balance, flexibility and core strength. Because the drill improves balance, flexibility and core strength you will get the most of the time you invest in improving your game. Balance, flexibility and core strength are the keys to improving all aspects of your golf swing including efficiency of body motion, efficiency of your swing, increased ball speed, and most importantly a more repeatable golf swing.
W
What you will need:
• Medicine Ball or equivalent (e.g. a soccer ball) • Dressing Mirror (optional but recommended) • Ability to stand on one foot (use a balance pad for advanced golfers)
What to do: • Facing the mirror, hold the medicine ball at 9 and 3 o’clock • While balancing on your lead foot, get into your golf posture, holding the medicine ball where your grip would be at your address position
Est. 1938
• Use a golf swing motion to move the medicine ball until your lead arm is parallel to the ground • Check your left arm is straight and your hands are still at 9 and 3 o’clock on the medicine ball • Return the medicine ball to impact to complete one repetition • Do the drill “swinging” as a left handed and right handed golfer • Add frequency, repetition, weight to medicine ball, and balance pads to continue to improve • Always use the ability to stay balanced as your guide
Visit www.puregolfcolorado.com for a video example of the drill Some of the ideas you want to focus on while you are doing the drill include maximizing your body’s rotational motion in the takeaway while maintaining balance, and staying quiet and compact. One fascinating aspect of this drill is what you can learn about your swing. The moment you lose balance is the exact time and location of a swing flaw. As I like to tell my students, you can do anything you want in your golf swing provided you don’t fall over (lose your balance) doing it! Yoga fit FORE Golf! By Kathleen Heiney LPGA Professional/ RYT Yoga Instructor
Golf entered into my life at the very young age of 6. I have been teaching for over 10 years and the game continues to not only amaze me but teaches me so many lessons in life. I decided to become a yoga instructor 4 years ago. I soon discovered all the parallels with golf, life and yoga. As I continue down the path of yoga and my career in golf I have noticed how much my life and my game has improved and overall the level of enjoyment I continue to have on the course. How can practicing yoga improve your game on the course and in life? Yoga means “union” of mind body and spirit. Ever heard the statement be the ball? How amazing would it be to take each shot one at a time with no attachment to the results, no tension, no anxiety and more importantly no expectations? Practicing yoga can do
exactly that. This column will not only help you with your game physically and mentally but it will allow you to take the game of life to the next level. Imagine this, when you learn how to manage your game with focus, ease and attention to the present it will transform who you are on and off the course. Stay tuned!
