Overland Golf Course Recovers Well After Grandoozy Music Festival
Overland Park Golf Course had a smooth reopening for golfers after restoration of the site following the 3-day Grandoozy Music Festival held on September 14-16. According to Denver City Officials, the damage was less than expected and only about 1 acre of sod had to be replaced after the festival. Here’s the Numbers: • 55,000 attended the festival over the 3 day event • The city will receive approximately $840,000 from Grandoozy. About
$240,000 of that will go to reimbursements for things like the golf course being closed and expenses incurred by the city. A little more than $300,000 will go to golf, $135,000 will go to the neighborhood and another $135,000 will be allocated to general parks • Much of the money received from this event will go to golf course improvements, park improvements and neighborhood infrastructure and improvements • Grandoozy utilized only 1/3 of the golf
course during the festival City Officials were pleased with the festival and the recovery of the golf course. “The damage afterward was minimal compared to what we were potentially expecting, so that was a good thing,” said Denver director of golf Scott Rethlake. “We did have some rain during load-in that caused some challenges, but we overcame those, so I don’t feel like there is anything we couldn’t overcome.” “We’re really happy, relieved and pleased that the course is looking great,”

said David Ehrlich, Executive Producer for Superfly. “… From our perspective, the festival went really well. I think we captured the vibe that we were trying to capture. It was very happy crowd, a very upbeat crowd, people shared a lot of special moments. We couldn’t have gotten there without the tremendous work of a ton of city employees and the neighborhood.” Over the next few months, the city and festival organizers will be meeting to review how the festival went this year and deciding on whether it will be held again next year. The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa a true “bucket list” golf course The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa has been creatively described as thrilling, remote, vertigo inducing, and challenging. With its award winning and manicured to perfection greens and lush fairways, it is without a doubt deserving of its #1 public golf course in Colorado top rating. Jim Engh designed the course utilizing natural high desert rock formations, leaving even the best traveled and avid golfers stunned. Redlands Mesa Golf Club only becomes more spectacular by the Colorado National Monument enveloping the course on its border. Early morning golfers are then left in amazement as the sunrise accentuates the National Monument with fire red reflections and subtle purple and blue hues. The course offers a multitude of tactful play as most of the tee boxes are elevated with a variety of narrowing fairways, water hazards, and giant boulders waiting to gobble up any missed shots. The verdant bowls enclosing the greens allow golfers the opportunity to strike at the pin with the potential to guide your ball onto the putting surface. Make no mistake however, the seemingly protected greens are met with speed and arduous pin placements which

require a fine touch and an eagle eye. The forward Tees do offer a reachable approach for novice golfers while continuing to challenge the scores of those who play the course daily. The immaculate condition of the course year round will exceed your expectations of high desert landscape. In addition, you will be welcomed upon arrival with a friendly, knowledgeable, and professional staff who continually excel in cus-

The menu offers a multitude of mouth watering cuisine from the famous and elevated Par 3 Club Sandwich to the New Zealand Lamb Lolli Chops, his menu offers something that everyone will

Denver Golf Expo... Registration for Exhibitors is Underway
2018 Jeep Compass Review A half-size smaller than the Cherokee and half-size bigger than the Renegade, the Compass has the looks of the Grand Cherokee without the price. The new Compass carves out that slim niche, starting with its smartly conceived shape. Inside, the Compass doesn’t stray far from Jeep’s current design themes. It’s laid out with care, and Jeep offers trim packages to brighten up its high-quality feel. The engine is a 180-horsepower 4-cylinder with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. It struggles a little uphill with more than three passengers but
on the positive side, the Compass rides and feels good. Overall it hits the sweet spot between crossover and SUV. The Compass has an independent suspension on all models, and it’s designed for on-road comfort unless you spring for the tough-mudder Trailhawk model. The Compass has a standard rearview camera and can be fitted with blind-spot monitors and forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking. Touchscreen audio, USB ports, Bluetooth, and cloth seats are standard. In the mid$30,000s, the Compass Limited has leather, navigation, and Beats audio. For more information on the Compass
Exhibitor registration is now open for the Denver Golf Expo which will be held Feb. 8-10, 2019. The Expo will take place at the Denver Mart, located at Interstate 25 and 58th Ave. As Your Key to the Game, the Denver Golf Expo’s goal is to get people thinking about golf earlier which is one of the reasons we hold the Denver Golf Expo in February. The thinking is… if we can give avid golfers a great golf experience, get a new club in their hands, give them a swing lesson, or get them thinking about golf in a new way it will encourage occasional and avid golfers to get out on the course as soon as they get the chance and perhaps play more. The Denver Golf Expo is again perfectly positioned this year to be the
week following the Super Bowl when sports fans are asking themselves, “Now what do I do?” Every year the Denver Golf Expo with help from the Colorado Section of the PGA, the CGA, CWGA, JGAC and exhibitors like you, attempt to kick start the golf season by getting golfers excited early about the game we all love. Make your plans to join us February 8-10, 2019 at The Denver Mart. Be there to see why the Denver Golf Expo is considered to be one of the top consumer golf expos in the country. For 2019, there’ll be more golf contests, more golf giveaways and more golf merchandise than you can “shake a golf stick at!” For more information please visit www.denvergolfexpo.com. D

Playing to your tendencies can help you hit more fairways and avoid the high numbers We all know golf is hard. At times, REALLY hard. Maybe one of the most frustrating parts of the game happens when you get into one of those ruts of hitting your tee shots everywhere BUT the fairway.
Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t say you can help your cause big time with the aid of a GOLFTEC Coach. But, aside from straightening your swing out in the bay, you can improve the result of your tee shots quite simply by learning how to play to your tendencies – not away from them. Learn your pattern, aim smarter from the tee. Yes, it’s just that simple.
If you know, for instance, that 75 percent of your tee shots slice and your driving pattern looks a lot like image 1 (for right-handers), moving your aim point farther to the left will shift the majority of those shots into the fairway and out of the trees and rough, as shown
in image 2.
These dots represent a typical shot pattern for golfers that slice their tee shots. These dots represent that same slicing shot pattern, but with a shift in aiming farther left.
The point is it all comes down to course management and being aware of your shot pattern – your real shot pattern – and adjusting from there.
For more information or to find a GOLFTEC location near you, please visit www.golftec.com. D
Image 1
Again … yes, it’s just that simple!
But many golfers don’t do this for a number of reasons.
Perhaps they don’t realize they actually do slice that often. Or maybe they know it, but think they’re already aimed far enough to left. Or perhaps they’re just stubborn and refuse to play to the slice which, even if you’re working on your golf swing, there’s a time and place to play for the perfect shot and there’s a time and place avoid double bogey.
Image 2
And regarding that last point which is exampled hole layout above, even the two “perfect” shots will end up in a much better place than the 12 others would without aiming farther to the left. So, what do you have to lose?

A Rare Reflection of the Mind of a Master Reflection Bay, a Las Vegas golf course jewel that is located in the billion-dollar, Lake Las Vegas Resort, was the first public resort Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course in Nevada, and completely lives up to the reputation of the architect. And, while the course was closed for a period of time due to the real estate recession that hit Las Vegas the course is back open, flourishing and better than ever. The course conditions are superb and every level of player is gushing positively about the course and its return. Since opening in 1998 the course has been awarded many different accolades including: America’s Top Golf Destinations by Golf Medalist, Top 100
by Golf Magazine, America’s Top Golf Communities by Travel & Leisure, Best New Upscale Course by Golf Digest and Best Overall Experience by Vegas Golfer Magazine. It was also the host course for the Wendy’s Three Tour Challenge for a number of years. Utilizing the 320 acre man made Lake Las Vegas Nicklaus crafted five holes at Reflection Bay that grace the beautiful shoreline of the private Lake Las Vegas, highlighted by the par 3’s, holes number 8 and 17 that play to near island greens and the par 5, 9th hole that hugs the water down the entire right side of the hole. There are three water falls, beaches and many palm trees all combining to separate the Reflection Bay
Golf Club experience. The official Nicklaus Design course description of Reflection Bay Golf Club reads: “Crafted along the northern shore of the lake, every contour of this imaginative course is a rare reflection of the mind of a master. Five holes stretch along a mile and a half of peaceful shoreline, with emerald greens embracing the hillside property of the luxurious Westin Resort. Measuring 7,184-yards, Jack has designed each of the par-72 golf course’s holes to be distinctive and memorable, including five holes stretching along a mile and a half of shoreline and the 200-yard, par-3 17th which showcases a peninsula jutting out into Lake Las Vegas.” Nicklaus etched this Las Vegas golf course out of the rugged desert and came up with a true Oasis. It was an artistic endeavor for the Golden Bear, and he took special care in plotting each bunker, fairway and green. Golf packages that include rounds at Reflection Bay and its sister Jack Nicklaus designed SouthShore Country Club, Lake Las Vegas’s private country club
are available featuring rooms at the Westin Lake Las Vegas, the resort that overlooks Reflection Bay and which has recently gone through a $40M renovation. The Westin Lake Las Vegas is a perfect spot for a family vacation, a romantic getaway or a corporate event. In addition to playing at either Reflection Bay or SouthShore Country Club, golfers can now also improve their games at the Lake Las Vegas Golf Academy under the watchful eyes of two PGA Tour players who have joined the Lake Las Vegas golf scene as golf instructors. Craig Barlow, a Henderson native who made 170 career cuts on the PGA Tour and who played in eight major championships, six U.S. Opens, a PGA Championship and a British Open and Jeff Gallagher, who won twice on the Web.com Tour and who also played the PGA Tour are now providing golf instruction for golfers of all levels. If you haven’t been to Reflection Bay and Lake Las Vegas you need to come see what the excitement is all about. For information on golf packages visit www.reflectionbaygolf.com or call 702736-0505. D

PGA Professional Hale Irwin Visits to Review City Park Golf Course Redesigns Progress Construction Tracks on Schedule with Over 75 Percent of Seeding Completed
Saunders Construction, Inc., and the City and County of Denver hosted Golf Professional, and three-time U.S. Open winner, Hale Irwin to provide key design input on the City Park Golf Course Redesign project. Irwin visited with City Park golf architect Todd Schoeder, ASGCA Associate and the program team to provide his professional insight to the playability and strategy of the new 18-hole course. iConGolf Studio, with design advisor Hale Irwin are providing the architecture services for the new golf course and Johnson Nathan Strohe is serving as the architect for the clubhouse.
“It is exciting to physically see the progress being made on the City Park Golf Course project,” said Irwin. “When completed, this will not only be a place for us all to enjoy now, it will be a place we would encourage our children to come and play golf. This project is a legacy for the future.”
Once complete, the City Park Golf Course Redesign project includes an updated 18hole golf course with, natural landscaping, a full-size driving range, a dedicated 4-hole course for The First Tee of Denver, a new clubhouse and maintenance facility, stormwater detention that provides increased flood protection to thousands of homes, and a reforestation program with a net gain of 500 trees. The basis of design for this project was developed from an iterative, collaborative process with a crosssection of members within the community. The redesign maintains the sweeping vistas and park like feel of the course’s original design.
Construction of the City Park Golf Course remains on schedule. The next phase of the project includes completing seeding operations, building of the new clubhouse, planting of new trees, and construction of the new 23rd Avenue intersection.
Progress updates can be found at the project’s website: www.cpgcredesign.org.
