The Boulders Introduces New Short Courses Perfect for Time-Crunched and Newer Golfer
T
he Boulders, consistently ranked among the top golf resorts in the country, has created two new faster-play golf courses. The Boulders’ famed North and South courses now offer nine holes of play respectively. The courses are perfect for busy executives who have only an hour to spare or less experienced golfers who don't want to tackle 18 holes. The new courses feature yardages of 100 to 200 yards and were created by installing new “pebble tees.” The short courses are less intimating for the newer golfers. “There's an assumption that you must play 18 holes of golf, and new golfers sometimes are discouraged that the game is difficult and they have to make this big commitment to braving it out for hours on the course,” says The Boulders' Director of Golf Operations Tom McCahan. “The short courses make it less stressful, more fun and easier to get into the game.” For more experienced golfers, the appeal of a short course is faster play. “It seems like everyone is time-crunched these days so it's great to be able to play your favorite sport without making your spouse a weekend golf widow or waiting until vacation,” says McCahan. “The nine-hole short course is a fun, rewarding play that golfers can squeeze in after work or before their kid's soccer game.” He added,
8
“It's also a great opportunity to get the whole family on the course for a game of golf on a beautiful day.” The short courses will be available for play (afternoons only) and the rates for the short courses start at $65 during peak season (January-May). FALL GOLF ACADEMY The Boulders Golf Academy, offering something for the scratch golfer, the neophyte golfer, the weekend duffer, the woman golfer, the “only-when-I-have-to” golfer, the die-hard golfer and the “neverbeen-on-a-green” golfer, is taught by Donald Crawley (named by Golf Digest as one of the “Best Teacher in the State”) and four other PGA and LPGA professionals. Special programs to be offered exclusively during the fall season include: Get into Golf This is designed for people new to the game who wish to learn the basics of the game of golf. There will be 4 sessions beginning Saturday October 19 at 10am.Fee is $120.00 for the four week session. $35 for individual sessions. Get Back to Golf Good for lapsed golfers who have been away from the game for awhile. The focus will be reacquainting you to the

game, irons and hybrids, driver and woods and the short game. There will be 4 sessions beginning Saturday October 19 at 10am. Jim Engh got it right when he designed Red Hawk Ridge...
S
ome say Red Hawk Ridge’s signature hole is the 14th, a 216-yard par 3. This hole plays from an elevated tee box and boasts amazing views in all directions. But with one breathtaking view after another throughout the course in sunny Castle Rock, Colorado, it’s truly difficult to pinpoint a singular signature hole. Throughout the course one will find extreme elevation changes, wildlife, rolling terrain and dramatic vistas.
The course layout sets the stage for playability, but also always keeps in the mind the magnificent landscape. Nestled in the Rocky Mountain foothills, many tees feature sweeping panoramas of Castle Rock, surrounding buttes and the Rocky Mountains from Pikes Peak to Longs Peak. There are five sets of tees, allowing for golfers, from beginners to low handicap, to play for their own challenge level. And fall and winter are both great seasons for playing at Red Hawk Ridge. With all the sunshine bestowed on Castle Rock, there’s plenty of time to get in some swings. Best of all, there is offseason pricing and specials during these months. Visit www.RedHawkRidge.com to learn more.
Opening in 1999, the course is 6,942 yards of excellence featuring bluegrass fairways and bent grass greens. This 72-par, 18-hole regulation course -- designed by the renowned Jim Engh - is an award winner, including being among the 10 best affordable public courses in the United States, according to Golf Digest. One reason Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course stays at the top of many favorite lists is that “I think Jim Engh got it right when he de- the staff listens to the users and often sursigned Red Hawk Ridge,” said Bob Per- veys them for input. sichetti , head golf professional at the course. “This is the type of course the ma- “We receive very positive feedback on the jority of golfers enjoy playing.” quality of the course conditions and cus10

tomer service. Customers can count on consistency when playing Red Hawk Ridge no matter what time of year they choose to play,” Persichetti said. The friendly staff, led by experienced PGA golf professionals, is eager to exceed the expectations of all guests. Before even getting on the course, golfers will enjoy the practice facility. The 35 turf stations mirror the fairways on the course, while the target greets with flagsticks give golfers an opportunity to practice shots they’ll need to make out on the course. Both private and group lessons are available with Red Hawk Ridge’s PGA professionals. The 3,000-square-foot putting green is located beside the clubhouse. Private lessons are $60 for one 30-minute lesson or $150 for a series of three 30-minute sessions. Group lessons are $45 per person for one 45-minute lesson (two people minimum) or $150 for three 45-minute lessons
(two people minimum). Red Hawk Ridge also offers several different clubs and leagues. The Men’s Club membership includes GHIN, social gatherings, tournaments, prizes, Pro Shop discounts and more. The Ladies’ Club includes an 18-hole league, 9-hole league morning and evening leagues and a novice league. A coed league features a shotgun start each Thursday at 5:30 p.m., May through September. There also is a senior league, organized by the Castle Rock Senior Center. For the younger ones, Red Hawk has Junior Golf Academy. The academy offers many classes and leagues for the various skill levels of younger golfers. There are 18-, 9-and six-hole leagues for junior golfers. Youth as young as 7 years old can participate in the six-hole league. The Clubhouse Grill is the perfect way to cap off a day on the course. for private functions. Whether it’s a family reunion, a holiday gathering or an engagement party, the Clubhouse Grill is a wonderful place to celebrate. Food options for private events range from full buffet to apThe Clubhouse Grill also is available to rent petizers as well as the full bar.

Biggest Lie Told To Employers When Playing Golf
70% of golfers say they have told a lie to either their work or to their significant other in order to play a round of golf, according to the survey of over 2,000 respondents from a popular golf website. “Playing hooky” from work was the number one lie told in order to play a round of golf. “I once called in sick and told my boss that my doctor had prescribed me some new therapeutic remedy for my shoulder and the side effects would render me lethargic and make me unproductive. I then went out and played 18 holes of golf”, exclaimed one respondent to the survey. “Golf is a type of therapy in my mind and I felt better the rest of the weekend.” Of the nearly 2,000 respondents who answered the question, “What lies have you told so you could go out and play golf,” the majority described lying about office meetings that came up, or suddenly having the flu. 69% say they have not had to lie in order to play golf. Wanting to relax and the stress of lying to a significant other were the main reasons. One survey respondent said, “I have a hard time lying to my wife because she knows when I’m not telling the truth. If I told her a lie to play golf, she would know and I would spend the entire round thinking about it. It is better just to tell her.” The survey was conducted through www.GolfDiscount.com, a leading retailer of discount golf equipment and apparel since 1995. D

New book solves pace of play problem for the sport of golf!
A
uthor, Steve Southard CGCS, CPRP, who is a national authority on pace of play will release his second book titled GOLF – The Complete Guide to Mastering Pace of Play on August 30, 2013. Mr. Southard teaches a seminar for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) titled Mastering Pace of Play While Maximizing Revenue, is the creator of an online educational class for the GCSAA, has taught for the Canadian Golf Course Superintendents Association National Education Conference, was featured on The Golf Channel in July 2013, and advised the USGA on their recent pace of play initiative. Golf – The Complete Guide to Mastering Pace of Play systematically addresses golf course operations including maintenance practice, clubhouse policies, training systems, course flow, course design, and misconceptions in the sport of golf that contribute to long playing times. The book is Mr. Southard’s second book on this subject matter and includes a large educational section designed to give golfers the expertise to troubleshoot pace of play problems at their favorite golf courses. The end of the book explains how golfers can facilitate improvement at their favorite course.
“For the last 100 years, course managers have blamed slow play on golfers. Golf – The Complete Guide to Mastering Pace of Play is designed to educate golfers across the nations. Then golfers will be able teach course operators how to eliminate long playing times on their course.” Southard explains. “Golfers will be exposed to training that exceeds the level of training of course managers.” To create immediate interest, the first 52 pages of the book are available as a free downloadable PDF at paceandproduction.com. “I am glad to provide the first 52 pages of the book to golfers and course operators who would like to understand more about a complex problem for the sport.” states Southard. “Most golfers will be amazed when they learn the root causes of long playing times. They will also learn how these delays can be avoided.” For more information on the new book release or free PDF download contact: Steve Southard, CGCS, CPRP. Golf Is A Funny Game Golf is a game of opposites. I’ll prove my point. To hit the ball further, slow down your tempo. If you want to hit the ball to the right, aim and swing to the left. And, if you get a hole in one, YOU buy the drinks. By Jerry Walters Divot Magazine Contributing Writer
I
t’s true, golf is a game of opposites, especially when it comes to the short game around the green. These are scoring shots, and to successfully get the ball up in the air, you have to hit down on it. That may not compute, but consider this notion; a descending blow to the ball will cause it to travel up the face of the club, imparting more backspin the farther it goes. Consequently, by making contact with the ball first, instead of the ground, the ball will pop up and land softly on the green. Attempting to lift the ball with your hands and the club will more often than not skull the ball causing the opposite effect, a low
16
shot that skids out of control over the back side of the green. To produce the solid contact, which will make the ball get airborne, you simply must hit down striking the ball first. In working with students on the short game, we pay particular attention to the center of their body where the sternum or breast bone is located, in relation to the ball position. For a right-handed golfer, the ball needs to be right of the sternum so the club will do exactly what we spoke about in the prior paragraph; hitting the ball with a descending stroke. Along with the ball being to the right of the sternum, the player’s hands need to be leaning to the left slightly, causing a delofting of the club’s face. Additionally, having slightly more weight on the left foot than the right

and pulling the left foot back, clears the hips so the body doesn’t interfere with the stroke and further insures contact with the ball first. Once in the proper position and feel comfortable in the set up, then comes the acronym my students coined as P.I.E., Practice, Imagination and Experience. In order to own the scoring shots around the green you need to practice them and gain experience. Work all the way around the green, hitting a variety of difficult shots and clubs, and in short order you’ll become very adept at all the shots you might face during your round. The “I” in P.I.E. refers to using imagination from all your practice, thinking about where you wish to land the ball and how far it will roll out. Try laying a towel on the green where
you want the ball to land in order to provide a visible target. When there are no obstacles between you and the hole, i.e., bunkers, ditches, and mounds, use the shot that gets on the green quickly, has more ground time than air time and one which you can read like a putt. Try this; move the ball position to the left of your sternum and hit ten or twelve shots. Track your success rate in getting the ball close to your target. First thing to consider is that after the apex of your swing (the sternum), the clubhead begins to rise causing that skulled shot mentioned previously. You’ll find yourself bottoming out before you reach the ball, creating a fat shot or one where the club skips into the equator of the ball. Remember: To own the shot, you need to practice, using your imagination and the result will be gaining the necessary experience required to hit the shot when it matters. P.I.E. Olde Scotland Has New To Show You! By Peter Hellman Divot Contributing Writer
P
eople ask me why I travel to Scotland so often. Other than for the obvious reason that it’s fun, Scotland is ever changing and to keep up I need to return from time to time to see what’s new. People also say that Scotland is about tradition and not what is new. It is true that the courses we dream about have remained much the same for centuries. But, believe it or not, new courses are rising out of and between the dunes and some of them may someday become part of a golfer’s dream and included in the Scottish tradition. On my last trip, I played several of my old favorites (Turnberry Ailsa, Machrihanish Old, Royal Dornoch, Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen) and three fairly new courses (Machrihanish Dunes, Castle Stuart and Trump International) that may someday be part of the tradition that defines Scottish golf. Here is a bit of what I experienced: Machrihanish Dunes: Machrihanish Dunes is certainly out of the way - located at the far end of the Mull of Kintyre - but that is no reason not to visit. To get there you have three options. First you can drive. It takes about four and a half hours from Turnberry, but the scenery is stunning and the sense of remoteness increases with each mile. You could also fly from Glasgow or take the new car ferry service from Ardrossan (north of Troon) to Cabletown. Rough seas or bad flying weather could make the drive the only option, but if you are willing to spend the time to get there, you will find three good courses to play. The newest of these is Machrihanish Dunes (the other two: Machrihanish Old and Dunaverty). As the first new course built here in over 100 years, Machrihanish Dunes is making a statement. An American owner with deep pockets and ambitious plans has already made the course worthy of play. Most holes are challenging (some say too much so) and with a wind off the North Atlantic, the course can be downright punishing. Accommodations nearby are excellent and include the Ugadala Hotel and cottages. There is even
a single malt whisky distillery (Spring Bank) nearby where tasters are welcome. Castle Stuart: This course gets its name from the nearby castle, which is operated as a small hotel. Though located on the grounds of the golf club, the castle is privately owned. It is my understanding, however, that the golf club is negotiating to purchase the castle to add to their now limited on-site accommodations. The course is located between the towns of Inverness and Nairn - both have plentiful accommodations. Castle Stuart recently hosted the Scottish Open and if you watched any of the Open on TV, you will understand why golfers love it. It plays out on two levels along the Moray Firth. The first three holes run west along the firth (bay). These fairways slope towards the water and your drives should hug the left side. The drivable (not for me) 3rd hole (a par 4) is one of my favorites. The well protected green reminded me of an infinity pool; it was impossible to tell where the green ended and the bay began. This optical illusion and the beauty of the hole, made concentrating on my shots difficult. The 4th hole, an upward sloping par 3 with a view of the Castle behind the green, starts your climb to the upper level of the course where the views are even better. You continue on this level to the 9th hole and the modern club house. The 10th hole takes you down to the lower level once again. The 11th (a par 3) is another one of my favorites. A generous green is in view from the elevated tee. Sounds simple? It is not! Swirling winds off the bay, little space to bail out left or right and the bay dead ahead, make for a challenging shot. Some of the Scottish Open players would have coveted my birdie. Trump International: Wherever “The Donald” goes or whatever “The Donald” does, there is bound to be controversy. His Scottish invasion is no exception. Some Scots, golf writers and players have panned his newest course perhaps due to his aggressive methods and grand plans. But in my mind, he has built a spectacular golf course. Located just north of Aberdeen, and touching the southern edge of the Murcar Golf Links, Trump Interna-
tional occupies an immense tract of coastal land with the highest dunes I have ever seen. The course weaves its way snake like among the dunes finishing at well designed and protected greens. The club house is temporary and accommodations are limited on site. American players will appreciate the golf range, which aren’t often found on Scottish courses. With Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen nearby, Trump International makes Aberdeenshire a good addition to ones golf itinerary. I have one compliant about
Trump International - it needs to mature. It should be better next year as fairways grasses take hold. I also have a suggestion that might help the image of both the course and “The Donald”….. change the name of it to one that promotes the course and not Mr. Trump…..hmmmm. Story by Classic GOLF Tours. fine felt (billiard cloth) putting surfaces that rewards good putting. These customized practice greens allow for adjustment of right or left break of the ball and even have two additional smaller hole sizes for added challenge. Both models also come with a foot stand plus a laser attachment beam which indicates the ball’s optimal path. Missed balls find their way down a side channel for continuous putting. In a poll conducted by Golfmates.com, the largest online dating website for single golfers, Creamer beat the competition by a wide margin, which included Spanish stunner Beatriz Recari, a victor on the Solheim Cup European team. “How you look on the green is as important to golfers as how they perform, so it’s no surprise that more than 2600 Golfmates singles were so enthusiastic about giving their opinion on who are the sexiest golfers of the LPGA, PGA, and the Champions Tour,” said Meir Strahlberg, CEO of Avalanche, LLC. “These poll re-

Improving Your Golf Game Over The Colorado Winter By Peter Norwood Divot Contributing Writer
Y
ou might be surprised to hear the winter months are actually the best time to seek improvement in most aspects of your golf game. In fact, a large number of players who compete professionally in this game undertake the biggest changes over their off season periods. Let me give you a real world example. It comes from PGA Tour Professional Steve Stricker, a professional
who resides in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison has a similar winter climate and season to that of Colorado. Steve Stricker finished his 2005 season ranked 162nd on the PGA Tour Money list and even missed getting fully exempt status from qualifying school. This meant he would get into only 4 of the first 16 events on the 2006 PGA Tour. Steve made a decision at that point; he would dramatically improve his technique over the 2005-2006 winter months with the help of his instructor. Steve did just that, he dramatically improved his golf swing and ball striking that winter, and then proceeded to have 16 top 10 fin-

ishes in 2006-2007. In 2007, Steve obtained his first victory in 6 years. As of now, you have probably heard his name countless times, as he is now ranked 7th in the World. If Steve didn’t dedicate himself over the winter months of 2005-2006, who knows where Steve would be today with his golf career. The point of this example is the greatest span of improvement in Steve’s career began with dedication he showed over one cold Wisconsin winter. I want you to do the same over your Colorado winter. It doesn’t matter what level of golfer you are, what matters is your desire to improve. If you are a player who has a tremendous desire to improve, no matter if you’re an absolute beginner or an elite competitor, take my word, there is no better time to work on your game than over the winter months. Why is the winter a better time to focus upon technical improvement compared to the summer? The reason is because the winter (off-season) is the best time to engrain movement patterns using conscious thought. The summer (playing season) is the best time to play using unconscious thought. Often the best rounds of golf played, especially good rounds under pressure, resulted from players having little to no technical thought. These players were merely reaping the benefit of their skills developed and engrained prior to playing. There is a gigantic difference in this game between playing “golf swing” and playing golf. Winter is a great time to work on one’s “golf swing”; summer is the time to play golf. Another area of your game to focus upon in the winter is making sure all of your equipment needs are taken care of. This includes making sure all of your golf equipment is properly fit and a great time to upgrade to new equipment. The newest club lines are often released during the winter months, usually from October through February depending on the company. When getting fit and trying new equipment, it is important to find a facility where you will receive a club fitting of the highest caliber. Try to find one with an educated staff, a large equipment selection, the best fitting technology, and the ability to go outside and see actual ball flight. Here at the MetaGolf Learning Center we pride ourselves in the attention and care we give students throughout our winter programs, and also in the quality of our clubfittings. We strive for excellence in both areas and would love for you to experience it. Winter programs, clubfittings, and merchandise gift certificates are also wonderful presents to give those avid golfer friends and relatives during the holiday seasons. USGA Approves OnCore's Hollow-Metal Core Golf Ball Patented Golf Ball Design is a "Milestone" in the History of the Game
F
or over thirty-five years the rules of the USGA have been largely unchanged when it comes to the specific characteristics governing golf ball technology and performance. While clubs have undergone significant changes during that period, the basic elements of golf ball construction have stayed fairly constant. However, on October 15, 2013, the USGA notified OnCore Golf that "Golf balls with rigid cores whose core diameters do not exceed 0.9 inches, such as the OnCore Evo Ball, will be permitted exceptions to the "traditional and customary form and make" requirement in Rule 1 of Appendix III." As a result of this new interpretation, OnCore's EVO ball was tested and found to be conforming to the Rules of Golf. It will appear on the list of conforming equipment which will next be updated on November 6th. Industry thought-leaders have described the introduction of a hollow metal core as ".. a milestone in the history of golf and for the golf ball in particular.." The golf ball community now has the ability to consider and incorporate an entirely new approach to golf ball construction - leading to a wider variety of golf balls that can be tailored for players of all skill levels while remaining true to the Rules of Golf.
"We are thrilled with the USGA's determination that rigid cores such as the OnCore hollow metal-core, will be permissible in designing the golf balls of the future. We have had an enthusiastic reaction to our ball from players of all skill levels. Our objective has always been to help golfers have a better experience and get more enjoyment from the game," stated Bret Blakely, OnCore's
President. "We expect that OnCore's products and technology which are exclusively secured by three U.S. patents will soon become the trendsetters in the industry." One of our dreams is to have young, up and coming tour players using our equipment. With the USGA approval, this dream can become reality, which is really exciting for us." stated Steve Coulton, Vice President. "To accelerate that objective and provide OnCore with the financial resources needed to execute our plan, we've now established a partnership with SeedInvest - one of the leading equity-based, crowdfunding platforms connecting accredited investors to high-quality start-ups seeking funding. We encourage fans of the company and ball who might be interested in investing in OnCore to visit www.seedinvest.com/oncore.golf." About OnCore Golf (www.oncoregolf.com) is a dynamic and innovated golf ball company led by two young entrepreneurs in their early 30s, Bret Blakely and Steve Coulton. The company is headquartered in Buffalo, NY and is dedicated to improving the lives, scores, and enjoyment of golfers of all skill levels by offering exciting products that live up to the company's tagline "You Just Became a Better Golfer."
