Cashing in on the Youth Movement P

arents are not afraid to spend money on their children. By the age of seven, the average child is playing in at least two organized sports. Many of these kids will have started these sports at the age of three or four and will continue to play for the next five years and beyond. Right now, parents are planning for 2018, preparing to spend hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars each month to ensure their child is playing sports, making friends, and having a positive learning experience. Each sport (soccer, baseball, gymnastics, skiing, dance, hockey, etc.) follows a singular strategy to maintain both parent and child engagement: • Acquire them young. • Get them into a development program. • Nurture their success with fun, social and parent engagement. The Big Question: Is Golf missing a tremendous opportunity to capture these young players and turn them into lifetime golfers? We asked leading player development professionals Brendon Elliott and Chris Knobloch their advice on maximizing the youth market. Here is what they had to say.

Brendon Elliot, PGA Professional (President, Little Linksters): What benefits has your facility seen from having a player development pathway? We are a hybrid if there ever was one at Little Linksters! We don't have a dedicated facility but rather several different locations we conduct our programs at. However, those facilities that have our program and actively work with us to help promote our programming, undoubtedly see an increase in junior participation, parental participation and in increase in revenue in rounds, merchandise, range, and F&B. A cool side note, although our Little Linksters programming is not about creating champions but rather being a great start for kids ages 3 and up, we had just over 80 kids that played at the US Kids Golf World Championship in Pinehurst this year that were past or current participants in one or more of our different programs and initiatives. What advice would you give professional as they look to plan their 2018? If they don’t have programming for very young children at their facilities, specifically ages 3-8, which is traditionally much

young than the norm, don’t be afraid to allow other local organizations such as Little Linksters or the First Tee or even other Professional with these types of programs to be at your facility. Same can be said for programs for the special needs community, competitive youth, or any other subset of the junior population. These programs, although not being offered BY your facility, but being offered AT your facility will still pay dividends for YOUR facility! Especially if you help these outside organizations and make them feel welcome!

Chris Knobloch, PGA Professional (Head Golf Instructor, Peachtree City): What benefits has your facility seen from having a player development pathway? A player development pathway provides guidelines for our entire junior golf program. Our player development pathway creates retention in our junior golf program which has significantly increased our year over year revenue. What advice would you give professional as they look to plan their 2018? For the Golf Professional, the best things

you can do is be proactive. First, parents today are planners. So it is extremely important to get your schedule set early, especially summer camps. Second, parents are hungry for more information, provide parents clear information about your program. Share all the new programs, any new technology to enhance the experience and engage their player. Finally, I encourage my fellow professionals to embrace change and continue to identify opportunities for improvement and to run your business more efficiently. Junior.Golf can help your facility maximize the financial impact of your facility’s junior program, for more information email .info@junior.golf. D

GOLFTEC Denver Tech Center Re-Opens OLFTEC announced the opening of its remodeled and enhanced Denver Tech Center location, a flagship facility that was the site of the original GOLFTEC more than 20 years ago. Located at 8000 E. Quincy Ave, Suite 200 – next door to Micro Center – the new center is more than 3,750 square feet and features five teaching/practice bays staffed by highlytrained coaches and one director of club fitting. The new build is among the largest GOLFTEC’s in the world and showcases the company’s vibrant new in-center design scheme. Additionally, the Tech Center is among a select group of new locations opened in 2017 to feature GOLFTEC’s enhanced TECFIT custom club fitting program. It uses leading-edge technology and software that combines swing characteristics with ball flight data to help properly identify optimal golf equipment for each student. “The Denver Tech Center location means a great deal to our company, as this is where GOLFTEC really got started.” said Joe Assell, Co-Founder and CEO of GOLFTEC. “22 years ago, it was our only location and now we’ve got almost 200 worldwide. Not only does it have heritage, but it has consistently been one of our best performing centers.” Overseeing the facility’s operation is Colorado Regional Manager, Ty Walker, a popular figure for years at the Denver Tech Center and greater Denver Metro market. Walker recently received the 2017 Colorado PGA Section Bill Strausbaugh Award, which acknowledges a PGA Professional’s outstanding display of integrity, character and lead-

“If you can out last that discomfort, I guarantee you baby; on the other side of it is success!” - By Eric Thomas

By Kathleen Heiney Class A LPGA Professional Certified Yoga Instructor

e are all creatures of habit. Especially in today’s day and age when everything is at our fingertips. Instant gratification, convenience, information etc. The one thing that is most difficult for a lot of us, including myself is change. I decided a few weeks ago to “change” my pre-shot routine. At first, I was like “this is easy”. I was practicing on the range and it felt so good. My first round out, with the new routine, I played great. The second and third not so much. The level of discomfort become more challenging, which then made it easier to go back to my old habits and routine. That level of discomfort kept creeping in and I didn’t like it so I settled back into my old ways. Many students come to me every day to get better, that is why you take lessons. However, more often than not, I here, but it feels so uncomfortable and my response is, it should. If we aren’t feeling uncomfortable then we are not learning. It is very easy

W

to overcome the level of discomfort on the range, but when we step out on the course it is a totally different scenario. So now what? My favorite quote is “Courage is the power to let go of the familiar” To truly make changes in our lives and with our game, it is not necessarily about how talented, strong or motivated we may be, it is about having the courage to really commit. It is challenging, for anyone, to step out of their comfort zone and truly stick to some-

thing new and different. If we really want to take our game or our lives to the next level we MUST learn how to surrender to the discomfort. One way to do this is through the practice of yoga. Yoga not only makes us strong, flexible and humble, it can also push us up against our edge. You know that place, we have all been there many times, not only in life but during a round as well. What do you choose to do when you get there? Walk away, ignore it, and go back to old habits,

more than likely, why because it’s comfortable. Think of the times on the course when you thought to yourself, wow that felt great but yet so uncomfortable at the same time. That is your edge, the place where change begins. We bump up against it often but yet so afraid to stick with it. When you practice yoga, physical and mental, we are put into positions that do feel uncomfortable, not in a painful way but in a way the pushes us. The edge is where the learning and transformation starts. It is that place of discomfort, if we settle in and surrender it will begin to feel more natural. Life is change in motion! We, as humans, are constantly changing. Our game, our bodies, our minds etc. Practicing being in the space of discomfort, acknowledging it’s there, surrendering to your edge is where transformation and change begins! The more we do this, like anything, the easier it becomes. Although I want to totally dump my new routine, I am going to continue playing with the edge of discomfort, because I know deep down inside it is exactly what I need! D

Updating a Beloved Neighborhood Course An interview with City Park Golf Course women’s league golfer, Jennifer Bater

s one of eight Denver Golf facilities, City Park Golf Course is best known as the urban course with unbeatable skyline and mountain views. The course is set to undergo a redesign this fall that will preserve its best features and modernize its amenities, including a full driving range and new clubhouse, while seamlessly integrating flood control for the surrounding community. The project has already drawn in big and familiar names, with a design-build team consisting of Saunders Construction, clubhouse architect Johnson Nathan Strohe and golf course architect iConGolf Studio with famed professional golfer Hale Irwin as golf design advisor. Denver Golf sat down with Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) member Jennifer Bater to talk more about the redesign of City Park Golf Course and her other favorite Denver Golf courses. Jennifer sits on the Design Workgroup for the redesign, a group comprised of residents, community members and golfers. This group was integral to developing the design guidelines that helped define the project.

A

Jennifer, based on your work with the Design Workgroup, can you tell us a bit about what the redesign will include? While the details are still being refined, we know the course will be an 18-hole par 70 in the existing parkland style that is so enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels. In addition to a new clubhouse with west-facing patios for mountain and skyline views, the redesign includes a full driving range that accommodates all clubs and meets safety needs without netting, which I’m most excited about.

How long have you been playing City Park Golf Course? I play there a lot because its closest to my house – it really is a very nice community golf course. It is so convenient and integral to my lifestyle. I play most Wednesday nights with my women’s league. That’s honestly how I came to be involved in the project. I first saw some project signage in the winter of 2016, and I found out they were looking for golfers to participate in the process. I’ve been in Denver for over 20 years and have been enjoying the course for just as long, so

Jennifer Bater

I wanted to be involved.

What courses will you play while City Park Golf Course is closed for redesign? Our next favorite course is Overland. It has a full driving range and is a nice course, particularly the back nine which back up to a bike path that sits next to the Platte. We also enjoy playing at Kennedy. From the west nine to the par three. The full course at Kennedy is really tremendous and challenging. When I play well at Kennedy,

which isn’t that often, I feel great!

What are the top three things you are most looking forward to about the Redesign? The full driving range. On the current course, those first three holes along 26th are really challenging if you haven’t warmed up with your driver! I also love having the entire practice and warm up area organized near the number one tee. The third thing is the chance for modernization of elements like the irrigation system. It can be hot here in Denver and City Park gets lots of play, so having modern irrigation just helps keep the course in the best condition for the water that can and should be used. The fourth thing, and I know you said top three but I have to mention it – man that clubhouse looks fantastic! To be able to sit on the terrace and look out to the mountains, seeing golfers either teeing off or finishing; we don’t have that today. City Park Golf Course will remain open until November 2017 and reopen in 2019. To learn more about Denver Golf facilities and the City Park Golf Course Redesign project, visit CPGCredesign.org.

he Walnut Creek Golf Preserve announced a total donation of $7,000 on Thursday to several local charities. The donation is funded by the American Junior Golf Association’s tournament in June, the Hale Irwin Colorado Junior by Transamerica. The Walnut Creek Golf Preserve will donate $2,500 each to the Westminster Firefighters Victims Benefit Fund and the Westminster Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association in support of The Wagner Fund. Another $2,000 will be donated to the Westminster Legacy Foundation. “As honored as we were to host the Hale Irwin Colorado Junior by Transamerica at Walnut Creek Golf Preserve, we are even more proud to be able to share our good fortune with three extremely worthy local charities,” said Lance Johnson, Parks Services Manager for the City of Westminster. The AJGA has partnered with the Colorado Golf Association and the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado with tournaments in the Denver area each year since 2015. The 2017 AJGA tournament was the first year at Walnut Creek Golf Preserve, and the tournament will return to the Westminster venue in 2018 and 2019. In 2017, Hailey Schalk of Erie, Colorado, won the Girls Division less than a month after claiming the individual championship at the Class 3A girls state golf tournament.

About Walnut Creek Golf Preserve Opened in 1999, Walnut Creek Golf Preserve is owned and operated by the City of Westminster. Named after a creek that traverses the course, this award-winning, 215acre golf course is sustainably managed to preserve and support wildlife habitat. In fact, Walnut Creek Golf Preserve is home

to more than 77 wildlife species as well as a staggering variety of native plants. The course’s naturally pristine landscape, coupled with extensive conversation practices, earned the course the coveted designation of an Audubon International Certified Signature Sanctuary. Walnut Creek’s sweeping mountain views, gently rolling hills, abundance of wildlife, and picturesque wild prairie grasses allows visitors to experience golf the way nature intended. About the AJGA The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. Mesquite Can’t Be Beat as a Golf Destination

nce one of Nevada’s best kept golf and vacation secrets, Mesquite has emerged as a world-class golf and casino escape. Once in the shadow of nearby Las Vegas, Mesquite has been using this proximity to its advantage. The town now shines with a vitality of its own and is a popular alternative to Vegas. Situated in the Virgin River Valley, it is a veritable oasis for the golfer-gambler who doesn’t want to wait for tee times, table games, sports book bets, poker buy-ins, fine or casual dining, and traffic. Mesquite offers what are arguably both the best packages in desert golf and the best values in hotels/casinos. From table game minimums to green fees to restaurants to lodging, the prices are much more reasonable, and, just as importantly, the smalltown atmosphere comes with all the big city amenities that guests expect.

O

Live High in Luxury Hotels GMN customizes the golf vacation so that you spend your days on the golf course and your free time and evenings either exploring the unique environs or resting in luxurious accommodations at one of their three hotels: Eureka Casino Resort, Rising Star Sports Ranch Resort, and Holiday Inn Express Inn and Suites. All three resorts are spacious and modern venues that specialize in both luxurious settings and personal service for golfers. The Eureka, an annual recipient of the Mesquite “Best Hotel” and “Best Casino” awards, has newly remodeled rooms, suites, and swimming pool, and it also has an award-winning collection of restaurants and bars. The casino philosophy is to afford its players

games with the highest limits and the best odds. Nearly 1,200 slot and video poker machines, all the prerequisite table games, and the live poker room will deliver all the action anyone could ask for. Rising Star Sports Ranch Resort is just that, a hotel for sports activities with the emphasis on golf. The resort is designed to house larger groups with room configurations that can hold as many as 12 people and has exceptional meal plans for everyone. The backyard is the center of attention as it includes basketball, volleyball, pickleball courts, horseshoe pits, barbecue grills, swimming pool, and hot tub. Just the place to wind down and relax after a day on the links. Championship Courses At Your Fingertips Coyote Springs Country Club, a Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, is a visual delight. A short drive from Mesquite into Nevada’s hinterland, the layout sprawls throughout the desert and is extremely playable and picturesque. The greatly undulating greens are the real challenge and push the player to putt like Jack—or to keep putting. With yardage on the five sets of tees ranging from 7,471 to 5,288 yards , Coyote Springs has all the real estate a golfer can desire. It also has water and water falls throughout the layout, an unusual aspect for the desert locale. Falcon Ridge, which overlooks the Holiday Inn Express and the Walmart shopping center, presents spectacular roller-coaster topography, with elevated tees and greens and twisting/turning ribbons of fairway on almost every hole. True to its name, the

course gives a falcon’s view of all of Mesquite and the Virgin River Valley for as far as the eye can see. It is a fun course from its four sets of tees—ranging from the 6,569-yard tips to the 4,440-yard forward tees—and should not be missed. Just to the north of Exit 122 is the Oasis Golf Club, a residents’ favorite and a most popular tourist stop. Arnold Palmer designed the 18 holes that bear his name and routed his par-71, 6,468 to 4,226 yards and five sets of tees through what the website describes as “some of the most scenic desert panoramas in Southern Nevada.” The Palmer sports rugged canyon fairways, huge elevation changes, and meticulously contoured greens that have earned it a “Top 10 You Can Play” by Golf Digest. The King has always maintained that this course is one of his own top-ten favorite designs. On the other side of 29,000 square-foot Oasis Golf Clubhouse is The Canyons, another par-71 layout with five sets of tees but a little shorter at 6,403 to 4,787 yards. These 18 holes are a combination of the remodeled Vistas nine and the recently completed Arroyo nine. It complements the demanding Palmer layout with its large fairways and large, true Bermuda greens. With its 67 fairway and green-side bunkers and elevation changes, The Canyons has a particularly scenic front nine—hence its original “Vista” name—and a back nine sculpted from the canyon walls of the Mesquite landscape. Coral Canyon, which measures from 7,200 to 5,052 yards on four sets of tees, is located in what is called “Color Country” because the course meanders around the

most brilliant red-rock formations in the area. With this unusual backdrop and with the lush conditions of the course itself, playing Coral Canyon is always a treat. The generous fairways keep most drives in play and allow for some flat-out power off the tee, but the enormous greens, which are designed to allow you to run the ball up to the pin or fly it all the way there, require accuracy to minimize the dreaded three putt. Sand Hollow Resort is located just 15 minutes up I-15 from Coral Canyon and is only 25 minutes from Zion National Park. Designed by former BYU star and PGA Tour player John Fought, The Championship Course has perfectly blended a mixture of Blue and Bent grasses across the large expanse of native red sand. Spanning from 7,315 to 5,306 yards in its five sets of tees, the tees, fairways, greens, and indigenous sand bunkers seamlessly flow through the natural terrain, utilizing the natural slopes and gradations. The routing also incorporates an impressive series of holes that Fought has carefully perched along the length of the red sandstone ledges that exist along the ridge of the property. According to the website, “With its dramatic elevation changes across a towering ridge line, The Championship Course’s last nine are unlike anything in the West.” It has been recognized as Utah’s “Best Public Course” for the second straight year. Along with the elegant spas and salons, the exceptional restaurants, and the headliners and top talents on stage, Mesquite has just about everything you could possibly want in a world-class sojourn. ccupying a spectacular site at Land’s End marked by massive dunes, sheer cliffs and desert foothills, Quivira Golf Club, arguably the most daring and eclectic course ever built by Jack Nicklaus, promises an unforgettable test from any set of tees. Opened to acclaim in 2014, Quivira, which commences at sea level before scaling the heights 275 feet above the roiling sea, has more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Cabo. Created as an exclusive amenity for owners and guests of Quivira Los Cabos, an 1,850acre luxury resort and residential community, the golf course boasts breathtaking views and jaw-dropping thrills from start to finish. An all-inclusive facility, Quivira offers complimentary food and refreshments throughout the round at four comfort stations. Quivira is accessible to guests of Pueblo Bonito Oceanfront Resorts and Spas, which consist of four properties. Golfers gravitate to the adults-only Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort & Spa located five minutes from the course. The hotel transitioned into the ultraluxe category with the addition of The Towers at Pacifica, a “resort within a resort” featuring 47 Club Level guest rooms and suites with private terraces as well as six suites with private plunge pools and a majestic Presidential Suite. Amenities include personalized 24-hour

butler service certified by the British Butler Institute. Peninsula, a casual gourmet restaurant featuring regional Baja cuisine and superb views of the beach and sea, was unveiled earlier this year in The Towers. The Peninsula Lounge Bar, which offers artisanal cocktails and an array of appetizers and small plates, is the place to be at sunset. More dining options? The Market at Quivira, a new food hall inspired by gastronomic emporiums such as Harrods in London and the Plaza Hotel in New York, features an enticing array of eateries, a handsome central bar and open communal seating. Real estate offerings at Quivira Los Cabos continue to outpace the competition based on quality and value. There’s Copala, centerpiece of an ocean-view, master-planned community with one-, two-, and three-bedroom hacienda-style condos as well as custom homes; and Coronado, a premier 22acre residential community with 68 single-story, multi-bedroom homes overlooking the ocean and Quivira Golf Club. The Q Life, the community’s signature activities and personal exploration programming, offers homeowners and their guests a full slate of specialized experiences.
