lease don’t think I am asking for pity, but damn it, I have been feeling sorry for myself. In the early part of the summer, I tore my Achilles tendon. It was the right one (not the “correct” one, as there is no such thing) but the one on my right leg. Add that to a broken left elbow of a few years ago and I am wondering “is golf over for me?” If not over, will my drives be shorter and my handicap higher?

If you must know, neither injury occurred playing golf. The elbow was result of a fall ice skating. I know, the sport is for kids and ice is hard and I should know better. The Achilles tear - well that occurred playing tennis. TENNIS, you say. Why would a golfer play tennis? It’s a violent sport. Unlike golf, tennis players wallop the ball at or near their opponents while in golf one tries hard to avoid them. Tennis players run with quick, jerky movements, which are hard on old muscle and tendons. Golf is more civilized, cerebral, courteous, slower paced, and rhythmic and you don’t sweat as much. And, if you aren’t winning with the fineness of your game, you can try to gain advantage by suggesting another beer.

With physical therapy for my Achilles, a kick in the butt from my wife and an idea that maybe a little mental therapy was in order, I decide to write about a few of the international golf trips I have taken. As you may have gathered by reading my articles over the years, I am a proponent of taking

ones golf game to other countries. To my mind, exploring other cultures, food, history and people add to a golf experience and make that experience more fulfilling and memorable. Being in the business of organizing golf tours, I have been fortunate to play on vir-

tually every continent (I skipped Antarctica because I couldn’t get a tee time). Here are four trips I am particularly fond of.

Take Portugal, for example. I visited the area just west of Lisbon called Sintra. Not as popular for golf as the Algarve, Sintra has the benefit of being close to Lisbon and

Portugal is beautiful in its varied landscape and rich history and its remnants as evidenced by many castles, museums and artifacts. Finally, did I mention that Portugal is also a great value?

New Zealand was another country at the top of my “must visit” list. I finally went a couple of years ago and did an extensive trip to both the North and South Islands. Historically and geographically, New Zealand is an interesting place. Besides being the last large land mass inhabited by humans, its relative isolation has protected its unique vegetation and animals. Geographically, the country is blessed with rolling productive farm and grazing land, tall snow capturing mountains and coastlines fjords that match Norway for beauty and remoteness. The country is also blessed by having several of the world’s best golf courses, dramatic yet comfortable accommodations, great food and wine, welcoming English speaking people and many things other than golf to enjoy. It is true that New Zealand is further from home and compared to Portugal more expensive, but it is truly worth a visit.

Closer to home is another favorite - Canada. I have visited both coasts of the country Prince Edward Island (PEI) on the east coast

and Whistler on the west. As part of the maritime area of Canada, PEI has the quaintness of rural New England, the simple charm of “Anne of Green Gables” and the tradition of the sea, which provides my favorites - lobsters, oysters and clams. There is plenty of fine golf as well and the accommodations range from traditional small hotels and guest houses to modern albeit small resorts.

Whistler, on the other hand, is in Canada’s ski country, but unlike Colorado lower in altitude. With four choice golf courses, a range of accommodations from the deluxe Chateau Whistler, to small hotels and condominiums, a walkable and lively village with interesting bars and many restaurants, Whistler is a wonderful summer/fall mountain golf getaway.

Okay. You guessed it. The act of writing this article has been therapeutic for me. The mental therapy worked. I am now determined to crank up my physical therapy and start planning my next adventure. Memories of the countries I have visited, the courses I have played, and want to play again, have convinced me my golf life is not over. I am no longer feeling sorry for myself. I will play again, I will do it to the best of my ability and I won’t rely on beer to be competitive. Maybe I’ll drop hockey and tennis too.

Pelican Lakes Golf and Country Club Announces New Course n a few short years Pelican Lakes Golf and Country Club, located in the heart of Windsor’s affluent Water Valley neighborhood, will welcome a sister golf course to the family. The 18-hole RainDance National Golf Club will be located less than three miles west of the 27-hole Pelican Lakes Golf and Country Club, and be the very first course designed by 8-time PGA Tour winner Fred Funk. “This opportunity for me is unbelievable,” said Funk, winner of 16 PGA and Champions Tour events. “The land and what we’re working with is going to make a name for itself. I want someone to walk off the 18th hole and can’t wait to play it again.” Funk, the 2005 Players Championship winner and three-time Champions Tour major winner, will be at Pelican Lakes at 12 p.m., Monday, May 26 at to talk about why he decided to make RainDance National his first design. The public is welcome to attend. Funk will ceremoniously drive the first ball off the No. 1 tee box of the currently under construction front nine at Pelican Lakes. He will also be available to sign autographs and pose for pictures for the public.

The Funk-designed RainDance National will increase the number of privately owned luxury golf holes operated by the Water Valley Land Company from 27 to 45. “This is a pretty unique deal,” said Funk’s lead architect Harrison Minchew, who has individually designed over 75 courses including the Kildare Hotel and Country Club in Straffan, Ireland, the site of the 2006 Ryder Cup. “There are not very many new golf courses getting built in the

US right now. This is going to be a treat.” No other community in Northern Colorado offers as many playable golf holes as does the Water Valley Land Company, which will ultimately make the area a resort destination for die-hard golfers, especially since a PGA Tour player’s name will be attached to one. According to Minchew, the main reason Funk chose the RainDance property for his maiden project is because of the instant

friendship he developed with Water Valley CEO Martin Lind. “Martin and Fred became fast friends, and when he offered this wonderful site to Fred he was looking at it was too good to believe,” said Minchew, who from 1982-2007 served as the Vice President, Director of Designs and Senior Golf Course Architect for the Arnold Palmer Design Company. “The RainDance property is extraordinary. It’s perfect for golf. I’ve been designing courses for 35 years and I’ve not seen a site so well suited for golf as I have with RainDance. It’s prefect. It’s going to stand apart from the rest.” “Martin offered it to me to be my first course,” said Funk, who met Lind when while completing the purchase of a private airplane. “I wasn’t shopping around looking for one, but I met him and he said ‘I want this to be your first signature course. I’m serious.’ I thought he was kidding. “I looked at the topographical map and was amazed at the potential the piece of land had. When we walked it the first time, I saw that it designed itself. RED ROCKS COUNTRY CLUB ANNOUNCES $4.2 MILLION EXPANSION

A New Blueprint for World-Class Golfing, With 360-Degree Views

ed Rocks Country Club (RRCC) today announced the $4.2 million renovation of its clubhouse and environs. The new facility will more than double the existing square footage of this private golf and country club 10 miles west of Denver. “Red Rocks Country Club historically has been a friendly natural setting to entertain family, friends and clients,” said General Manager Mark Condon. “And this expansion will allow us to accommodate our growing membership from across the Front Range and Denver.” The existing 18-hole golf course, which winds its way through ancient rock formations, is carved into a landscape made internationally important by Red Rocks Amphitheatre, both of which are a scenic 20-minute drive from Denver. The design process extends from close consultation with members and other stakeholders in recent years, to identify approaches best suited to the unique climate and landscape of the American West. “We’re making the transition as seamless as possible for our members,” said Bernard Hockenberry, the Owner’s Construction Manager. “Work will begin toward the end of the golf season, and

uivira Golf Club and Pueblo Bonito Resorts and Spas have made a speedy recovery from Hurricane Odile and all resort properties in Los Cabos have re-opened to guests including Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos, Rosé, Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort and Sunset Beach Resort & Spa. Quivira, the resort’s highly anticipated Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, has also opened for play. According to Director of Golf Brad Wheatley, the dramatic 7,139yard layout at the tip of the Baja Peninsula marked by massive dunes, sheer cliffs and desert foothills, sustained minor sand intrusion and cactus loss but otherwise weathered the storm well. The beachfront clubhouse was also relatively unscathed by the hurricane. Special green fees will be in effect at the club throughout the month of October. Grand opening is scheduled for December 4. Additionally, the Montecristo Estates Luxury Villas, an exclusive gated community located near Quivira Golf Club, and The Novaispania Residences are receiving guests. “We have worked hard to re-establish all services and to repair, even improve, aspects of the resorts,” Ernesto Coppel, president of Pueblo Bonito Hotels and Resorts. “I have always insisted on having structurally sound, high-quality facilities, and because of this, our resorts were in relatively good condition after the hurricane. We are fortunate that our recovery time has been this fast.” Electricity, telephone, Internet and potable water supplies have been fully re-

stored in Cabo San Lucas. No major structural damage was inflicted by the storm, enabling the destination to recuperate quickly. The federal government has made the recovery of Los Cabos, Mexico’s third most popular tourism destination, a top priority. New to the tournament rotation for ’15 is Angel Park Golf Club. There isn’t much more you need to mention about Angel Park Golf Club, other than Arnold Palmer and “The World’s Most Complete Golf Experience.” Palmer designed the two 18-hole golf courses at Las Vegas’ Angel Park Golf

Club, the Mountain and the Palm, and other amenities found at the facility combine to make it the total golf experience. The Mountain course is one of two 18 holes courses at Angel Park designed by Palmer and features holes decorated by canyons and water. You don’t have to be good to be good to play with! By Jerry Walters Divot Contributing Writer

ow many have times have you gone to play golf with an incomplete group? The starter sends out a single and immediately his response is, “Iʼm not very good. I hope you can put up with me.” You need to understand this; that part is inconsequential. What does matter is that youʼre enjoyable to be with for the next 5 hours. So, as your golf consultant, here are a few tips for the novices to assist you in golf etiquette, even when youʼre inept at the game. • Donʼt be bashful about conceding putts, even on the first green. Since there is obviously no cash on the results in this quickly assembled group, make yourself out to be very generous. Any putt within,

oh letʼs say, 6 feet, might be acceptable for starters. Take it upon yourself to observe the others in your group. If theyʼre struggling with their putting skills, focus your gen-

If the answer comes back negative, offer to let them have one or an entire sleeve to sample. Golfers love to try new equipment. • Refrain from jingling the change in your pocket when one of the group is over a crucial putt. The rest of the group can quickly determine that you have enough money to buy the course, but let everyone play without being disturbed by you. Save your change to tip the cart girl. • Speaking of the beverage cart, offer to buy every time the cart comes around. Nothing adheres you to new golfers like the willingness to buy a round of cool beverages on a hot day on the course. And, everyone enjoys those imported beers, but canʼt always spring for them. Be the bigger per-

son and order up. • Honors! Many times the tee box is all I play for. Forget the pace of play here. Always be mindful of a special accomplishment on the course, and reward accordingly. • And, after the round is complete, while sitting around with your brand new buddies, describing each one of your shots from the most recent round, after youʼve bought the plate of nachos, filled everyone with more cold foamy beverages, and tipped the server, offer to arrange next weekʼs outing. Prepare to use your credit card to secure the tee time, and donʼt be a pest about asking to be repaid. Be secure in knowing that youʼve made new friends and that you donʼt have to be good to be good to play with. The Five-Second Rule... feel the distance

hile we would all like to make every putt, the reality is that lag putting is an important part of the game. Improving your lag putting will allow you to leave yourself a much easier and more manageable second putt, thereby reducing the frequency that you have a dreaded 3-putt. Eliminating 3-putts will quickly lower your score and improve your confidence on the golf course. I want you to try this at home; Find a friend and stand five feet apart. Toss a ball underhanded to your friend. Now have them toss the ball back to you. Continue this exercise for a couple throws. Did anyone underthrow or overthrow so badly that the ball was uncatchable? For the most part, the simple act of “playing underhanded catch” is easy. What makes it so is that we are looking at our target and reacting it. Our brain is very good at determining pace and direction when we look at a target. However while putting we

are taught to keep our eyes down and stare at the ball. When it comes to golf, most amateurs I

see spend very little time looking at the target. In order to tap into your natural ability to determine pace and direction, stare at the

target for 5 seconds right before you stroke the putt. I teach my students to literally count to five; one one-thousand, two onethousand, etc. When you return your eyes over the ball, you can feel the distance. It’s important to stroke the putt immediately after you complete the five-second rule - don't wait. Practice around the putting green. Use the fringe line as your target and see how close you can get a ball to stop near the line. You will be surprised how well this tip works to improve your speed, lower your score and increase your putting confidence. Say goodbye to 3-putts! Leaf Viewing – For nature-lovers with fall leaf viewing in their veins, or visitors seeking a colorful autumn excursion, the golden leaves of Colorado’s iconic Aspen trees gild inviting trails on the top of Grand Mesa. The National Scenic Byway along I-70 from Grand Junction to the Mesa also displays the happy yellow of turning Cottonwoods that fringe the Colorado River.
