Grady to return to CU as assistant golf coach

BOULDER — Patrick Grady, who rose from a late signee on the smallest amount of scholarship money there is to one of the nation’s top 50 golfers five years later, is returning to the University of Colorado men’s golf team as an assistant coach, head coach Roy Edwards announced Tuesday. Grady, 29, replaces Brandon White, Ed-

wards’ assistant the last two seasons, who is leaving the coaching profession to enter his family’s private business. He will finish his time at CU by helping coach David Oraee later this week in the CU senior’s appearance at the NCAA Championship Finals in Bradenton, Fla. Grady will officially start on June 2. "We have been very fortunate to have some great assistant coaches and we are excited and fortunate to bring Pat Grady back as our next assistant coach,” Edwards said. “Pat brings a strong history of success as a student-athlete here at CU. He is the epitome of a player who worked his way through the ranks of collegiate golf to have tremendous success. Pat's biggest strengths are his work ethic, his competitiveness and his love for the CU golf program. He has an immense amount of knowledge our players can tap to improve their own games." Grady was not recruited by any Division I golf program out of high school, but after he won the GJCA Match Play Championship in July 2004, he was offered a spot on the CU team in the summer of 2004 by the late Mark Simpson; that first year, he was on 1 percent scholarship, basically enough to cover his books. He initially intended to redshirt, but

showed early flashes and qualified for CU’s third tournament of that season. He instead redshirted after his junior season, and when he returned to the lineup as a fifth-year senior for the 2008-09 season, he had the kind of year that earned him CU’s Co-Male Athlete of the Year honors for all sports (with teammate Derek Tolan). He played in all 13 tournaments, with two wins, five top 5, eight top 10 and 10 top 20 finishes. He earned PING All-Region honors and was an honorable mention All-American, finishing as the No. 46 ranked player in the nation (Golfweek). He recorded a 71.98 stroke average for the season, the third best in school history (and his 71.32 average during the spring the second best, just .02 off the record). His outstanding spring was topped by his victory in CU's Stevinson Ranch Invitational, where he cruised to a win with an 8-under par 208 score. His top fall highlight that year was his first career collegiate win, when a 67-69-68—204 scorecard earned him medalist honors at Denver’s Ron Moore Invitational at Green Valley Ranch (he was named the Golfweek National Player-of the-Week for that effort). “I can’t tell you how excited and psyched I am about this opportunity to come back to CU and help out the golf program,”

Grady said. “Playing at Colorado under Coach Edwards was one of the greatest experiences of my life and I can't wait to get started as a coach.” In amateur play, he became the first player in state history to win the three “majors,” the Colorado Golf Association’s Match Play Championships in 2005, the Stroke Play title in 2006 and the Public Links crown in 2007. He was a two-time state amateur player-of-the-year. A Coloradoan to the core, he was born in Westminster and graduated from Broomfield High School, where he lettered four years in golf. He graduated from CU with a double major in Business (finance and accounting) in May 2009. As a senior, he was named to the prestigious GCAA All-America Scholar team (golf’s version of Academic All-America), and was a two-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 team member. He tried his hand at professional golf following graduation and most recently has been working as a certified public accountant in the Denver area. At the time of his graduation, he finished 14th in the most rounds played (113) at Colorado, finishing 16th in career stroke average (74.45), ninth in top 5 finishes (7), sixth in top 10 finishes (12) and ninth in top 20 efforts (18). Golf vacations with all the comforts of home olfers are enjoying the many benefits of home exchange; gaining local knowledge of local courses, staying in a luxury home and saving plenty in accommodation costs. The pleasure of playing a new golf course takes you to great destinations around the world. What if you can travel to these locations and get tips from a local golfer on the nuances of the course? And what if after a successful day on the links you can come back to a luxury home to relax and continue to share the stories and experiences of the greens, while saving thousands on accommodation expenses? All of this is possible by combining golfing trips and home exchange. To make this easy, International Vacation Home Exchange, IVHE.com, has launched a web portal that specifically lists homes where owners are on or near a golf course. With collaborative consumption and the sharing economy growing at a very fast pace, home exchange is a great way to travel. IVHE.com offers traditional direct home exchanges, where two parties decide to swap homes at the same time. IVHE.com also offers a unique solution for golfers that already own a vacation home.

G

10

About IVHE Established in 2003, IVHE is the leading network in non-simultaneous home exchanging, in which members gain points by letting out their second homes/vacation properties to other members. Points earned can then be accumulated and ‘spent’ at any of properties in the collection.

IVHE.com’s credits system enables more flexibility and options for second home owners. The ingenious system gives credits to the host member when someone stays at their property. They in turn can then spend these credits at any of the properties in nearly 70 countries around the globe. Certainly major golfing destinations in the Caribbean, Ireland, Mexico, Scotland, Spain and throughout the United States are all listed. To enhance the variety available you might also consider great golf locations in Argentina, Australia, France, Morocco, Portugal or even Thailand.

“Travel while enjoying all the amenities of staying in a luxury home; IVHE.com members, on average, save $409 per night in accommodation costs. Golfing and home exchange are a great way to tee up a vacation. Our members around the world are sharing both their knowledge of local golf courses and their homes to create a fantastic experience for each other. This savings certainly helps pay for green fees or maybe a celebration dinner with an extra round at the clubhouse!” says Larry Klimczyk, Director of International Vacation Home Exchange.

Other benefits for IVHE members include: • Choice of Direct or Non-Simultaneous trades • Travel Coordinators help plan your vacation • 4 Star Verification for your security • Great search options, including vacation themes • Prime time weeks for choosing available weeks • Easy to use website with chat and phone support • Credit system allows maximum flexibility for you • Club Members only area with personal profiles • Your option of enhanced Platinum benefits • Save thousands on your next vacation. YOGA is a game changer By Kathleen Heiney DIVOT Contributing Writer

hat can yoga do for you and how can it forever change the way you play golf and live life? Yoga is a practice that was founded thousands of years ago. Recently it has become one of the hottest things in the west. Yoga has taken on many meanings including union,

W

connection, focus and mindfulness. How can practicing yoga affect the way you play golf? When “practicing” yoga on a mat we are focusing on both the mind and the body. The physical practice of yoga helps build strength, balance and flexibility. Mentally, the practice of yoga helps us achieve mindfulness. Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our

DIVOTMagazine.com l Summer Issue 2015

thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and surrounding environment. Mindfulness also involves acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them—without believing, for instance, that there’s a “right” or “wrong” way to think or feel in a given moment. What can practicing yoga do to change your game? First and foremost, mentally,

it teaches us to be in the present, let go of distractions and accept what is. Often times, when we play a round of golf, we are rehashing the past and looking too far into the future of the next shot or next hole. This can set us up for failure. The physical practice of yoga is a great way to maintain strength, flexibility and balance. All three are key components to a consistent golf swing. In addition, it allows us to stay present in our bodies, create awareness with our breath and help clear our minds. When the mind is clear and the body is present the golf swing feels effortless. Golf is a lot like life. The harder we try the more resistance we get. When we let go and allow things to flow life seems effortless. We forget that life, too, is a practice and need to accept that we will never master either one. When we apply yoga principles to the game of golf and carry these principles into our lives we learn how to clear our minds, let go of what was, and be present to what is. This will allow your life and your game to flow! We live in society that is fast paced, constantly moving and changing. We are continually challenged to be present. The golf course is a perfect place to “practice” mindfulness. The more mindful we become on the course the more present we can become in our daily lives. The practice of yoga can and will change your game and your life. It is a commitment to yourself, becoming a better player, better person and, ultimately bringing more peace and happiness into your life. Are you ready to take the challenge? Make the shift and commit to a better life, better game and more importantly a better you! Call 303.380.71750 for a FREE Yoga Fit FORE Golf Introductory Session! D About Linc Golf and Wellness LINC Golf & Wellness believes that golf is a game of balance, focus, relaxation and fun. People may think learning golf is difficult. St. Andrews – The Open 2015

By Peter Hellman DIVOT Contributing Writer

he British Open or just “The Open”, as the Brits call it, returned to St. Andrews Old Course this year. What is it about the Old Course that makes a golfer’s “must do” list? Is it because the course is over 600 years old? Or, is it the quirky layout or the fact that the Open has been played here 37 times? Perhaps it’s the almost spiritual reverence that some of golf’s greats have shared with us higher handicappers. Whatever it is and from wherever it comes, playing the Old Course should be on your list. There are interesting facts about the Old Course you may not know. Did you know that the course is public? Though there are many private clubs in St. Andrews, including the Royal & Ancient Golf Club, that have playing privileges, the Old Course is open to all. Cost wise, however, we outsiders are disadvantaged. During the high season (mid April to mid October) we pay about $265 for a round of golf. A local pays about $200 for the year. The Old Course is not open on Sundays. On this day

of rest, it becomes a public park for picnicking or strolling down fairways and around bunkers. Speaking of bunkers, there are 112 on the Old Course and they were not created by some diabolical greens keeper or golf

architect. They are natural to the land and originally created by sheep that once shared the course. Sheep will burrow depressions in the sand to create shelters from the wind, which we know is no friend to golfers or sheep. The most famous (per-

haps infamous is a better word) bunkers on the course are on holes 14 and 17. The “Hell Bunker” on 14 is ten feet deep and the best exit is backward. The “Road Hole Bunker” on 17 has seen many hopes of triumph lost. Bobby Jones’ first Open in 1921

Golf Canada! Did you know that Canada is a bargain! In fact due to the strong U.S. Dollar, Canadian Golf packages to Alberta, British Colombia, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are 20% less expensive than last year! was dashed by a bunker on the par 3, 11th. After four attempts to get out, he walked off the course and the tournament. He did return, however, to win the Open at St. Andrews twice and say, “I could take out of my life everything but my experience here in St. Andrews and I would still have had a rich and full life.” The Old Course layout is a bit unusual. Of the 18 holes, seven greens are double greens meaning that two holes share one green. This makes for some massive greens and really long putts. The green for 7 & 11 runs 112 yards from left to right. I had an 85 yard putt once that was absolutely brilliant for it ended up as a simple tap in of -- 30 feet. Like many of the earliest golf courses, St. Andrews did not start with 18 holes. In fact, the old layout had 22. In 1764, members decided that four of the holes were too short and so combined them with existing ones to create what we now know as a standard 18hole layout. The current layout was created in 1863 by Old Tom Morris. One change moved the 18th green to where it is today - a former grave yard. Perhaps this is why a tricky sloping area of the green is named “The Valley of Sin.” The re-location also put the 18th directly in front of Old Tom’s golf shop, a profitable operation since 1848. For those interested in playing the Old

Course, there are six ways for an outsider to get on the course. 1. Make Application during the first week of September for the following year. 2. Enter the daily Ballot two days before desired tee time. 3. Approach the starter as a walk-on. 4. Purchase an Old Course package from a reputable golf tour operator. 5. Purchase a gaugingly expensive package from The Old Course Experience, which controls 14% of available tee times. 6. Play with a member of one of the private golf clubs in St. Andrews. I have played the Old Course and watching The Open this year was like reliving my own experiences. Strangely, I played some of my best golf on the course (like Tiger I played 18 without hitting a bunker). Perhaps I fell under some spell created by 600 years of history. Influenced by a spell or not, I have had the same sensation every time I played - once beyond the first hole, calm came over me and I focused in a way I rarely do. Perhaps when The Open returns to St. Andrews in 2020, you will re-live your Old Course experiences as well. Story by Classic GOLF Tours. The Right Tool for the Job By Bob Meddles Divot Contributing Writer

ccording to some statistics I just made up, every year golfers spend more than $879 million on equipment and devices designed to lower their scores. The bulk of this money was spent by golfers like myself, and by that I mean golfers who cannot count our handicaps without removing our shoes and possibly the spikes of at least one other member of our foursome. Oddly enough, single-digit handicap golfers tend to spend their share of disposable income geared to golf improvement on things like state-of-the-art balls, custom-fitted clubs and, get this, lessons. Suckers. Why would you spend your hard-earned money and your hard-to-comeby time on lessons and practice when the golf stores are awash in gadgets that can make you a better golfer without any real effort on your part? I don’t get it. Literally hundreds of items out there guarantee to improve your game immediately, and if you think I am going to forego that kind of instant gratification in favor of hard work and personal sacrifice, well, you have another think coming. Watch any of those infomercials that

A

follow a tournament that ended sooner than expected, and you’ll see how easy it can be. You know the ones I’m talking about. Those half-hour “documentaries” that offer us the chance to straighten our drives, get out of the sand more expeditiously, and/or drop more putts simply by purchasing the gadget du jour for four low payments of just $39.95 (and if you act now, we’ll make the first payment for you and throw in this lovely tee cozy at no additional charge). Look: Deep down, we know we can’t really suddenly start hitting 300-yard drives just because we are using a club made from a petrified giraffe femur epoxied to a vulcanized cantaloupe, but the siren call of the long ball is simply too much to resist. It’s not really our fault, mostly because nothing in society today is anyone’s fault if you’re willing to look for a reason. We’re just another segment of the population looking for a quick fix to a long-term problem. We’re a “lose 10 pounds a week, make $50,000 a month from home, eat three pounds of bacon and ice cream while lowering your cholesterol” society. We want to believe in that “no pain/big gain” theory so badly that we don’t care how improbable the claim is, we just want what we want, and we want it now.

I should know. Why, you can’t swing an articulated driver with built-in feedback receptors and a molded grip over your head in my house without banging it into one training device or another. I’ve got weighted clubs, clubs that bend in the middle, clubs with laser lights coming out of either end, clubs with sliding grips, long clubs, short clubs, practice mats, alignment hats, stance aligners, distance diviners and more putter training devices than you can swing a flat stick at. And while I was looking over this massive inventory of training aids, it occurred to me that I was lured into buying each one of these devices with a guarantee, a guarantee, mind you, that they would lower my score from two to six strokes. And they said it right there on TV, so it has to be true. I now have a plan. I am going into seclusion for the next 30 days. During my forced hiatus, I will be practicing with each one of these magical talismans. By the time I emerge in one month, I will be the ultimate golfing machine. The cumulative effect of all this golf gadgetry will no doubt transform me from the hack that my golf buddies have come to know and love into a lean, mean birdie-making machine. My average score should be about 56, and my metamorphosis will be complete when I bankrupt each and every member of my foursome.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before. Oh, they all laughed at me when I purchased these items, one after another, seeking the perfect swing and my rightful place among the scratch golfers of the world, but no more. It’s my time to shine. Now, if someone will help me fasten my Peter Jacobson Swing Jacket and super glue this titanium aiming rod to my forehead, I will get down to work. Divot Magazine Auto Review 2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited

All 2015 Outbacks come with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that is designed to improve gasoline mileage. All Outbacks also come standard with traction-enhancing all-wheel drive. Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $25,745 for a base, 2015 Outback 2.5i with 175-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and CVT. The lowest starting retail price for a 2015 Outback with uplevel, 256-horsepower six cylinder is $33,845.

ecessor and is easy to maneuver.

Best of all, the increased passenger and cargo room in the 2015 Outback doesn't come from a noticeably larger vehicle. The compact, five-seat, 2015 Outback occupies pretty much the same footprint as its pred-

Some 20 years ago, the Outback helped lead the way to crossover SUVs that blend car-like ride with SUV looks and capabilities. At the time, the Outback had more of a station wagon look. Today the Outback's styling is sleek for a vehicle with SUV capabilities and buyers are finding the new Outback appealing, judging by record U.S. sales of 138,790 in calendar 2014. Views out of the Outback are pleasing for front- and back-seat passengers.

The Outback has long been one of the best vehicles for front-seat legroom, and for 2015, 42.9 inches of front legroom continue to surpass the CR-V, Sportage and many others. There's more cargo space than in the predecessor with a full 35.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats vs. 34.3 cubic feet a year ago. With rear seats folded flat, total cargo room is up to 73.3 cubic feet. Subaru's electric power-assisted steering had quick response, and there was less body lean in the Outback than in some taller, more traditional looking crossover SUVs. The base Outback four cylinder is unchanged for 2015. But with the improved CVT, government fuel economy ratings are better, at 25 miles per gallon in city driving and 33 mpg on highways. Feature Story

Sorting out the future and fate of Applewood Golf Course By Rhett McEmma DIVOT Writer

f the potential sale of Applewood Golf Course were a board game there would only be three player tokens needed. The player rolling first would be the Beer Mug, representing the Molson Coors Brewing Company, formerly the Adolf Coors Brewing Company. They are the owners of the land that has been home to Applewood GC, for over 50 years. The second player would be the Golden Shovel, representing Carlson Associates. They have been successful Colorado land developers for nearly as long as there has been an Applewood GC. The third participant would be the Dark Horse, representing Save Applewood Golf Course (SAGC), the organized neighborhood group who stands to be most affected by, and who is adamantly opposed to, the sale of the course. SAGC are the clear underdogs in this game. Odds makers would give no better than a punchers chance for the Dark Horse to succeed against such savvy and well established competition. Regardless, all three of these players have a right to belong in this

I

30 32

match, and to feel their strategic positions are founded in principles that are sound. All three are right. A win for the Beer Mug would simply mean to close the sale of a piece of property they own. One that they have every legal right to liquidate, especially for a price some feel is nearly double what the property is worth, under its current zoning restrictions. Although the Golden Shovel has the right to pay the agreed, inflated, price for the property, they will most likely need to get the land rezoned for single-family, residential housing, in order to claim the type of win they hope for. This is why the Golden Shovel holds the games only, getout-of-the-deal card. If they are successful in their attempt to rezone the property to their liking, it would enable the Golden Shovel to complete their deal with the Beer Mug, and bulldoze the golf course to create a new neighborhood where birdies flew and bogies were abundant. If unsuccessful, they have the option to leave the game without penalty. The Dark Horse, speaker for the neighborhood residents who would feel the trickle down effects of the sale of Applewood GC the most, must adopt a strategy

DIVOTMagazine.com l Summer Issue 2015

making it difficult for the Golden Shovel to rezone the property. In order for the Dark Horse to keep their golf course and take home the championship belt they will need for either, the Golden Shovel to bow out of their agreement with the Beer Mug, or for the Beer Mug to negotiate a way out of their deal with the Golden Shovel. Should either of those happen, the Dark Horse will still need the Beer Mug to find someone on a white horse who is willing to buy the property at an agreed price, and be willing to abide by its current zoning-- which is primarily for agriculture, some limited industry, gravel excavating, and for a golf course. Currently the land is restricted from having any new structures. This would include barns, sheds, and homes –multi or singlefamily. In spite of what appears to be long odds, it is well within the rights of the residents of the Applewood community, a.k.a. The Dark Horse, to fight for their village golf course with any legal means necessary. Their strategy is simply to insist that statutes and laws, which have applied to this property for many years, are enforced. The potential sale of Applewood Golf Course is not a game. It is a real possibility in spite of SAGC’s pleas for Carlson to reconsider, and their organized opposition.

Molson Coors and Carlson Associates cannot be happy with the obstacles being put in the way of their agreement. Besides the loud outrage expressed by the neighborhood at town meetings and in writing to Jefferson County commissioners, Save Applewood Golf Course group has attorneys, both pro bono and retained, preparing for their legal battle hoping to encourage Carlson to exercise their option to back out of the purchase of the property. In addition to the current restrictions with regards to zoning, SAGC has discovered the plot of land in question is bound by a 40 year old Colorado law, the Preservation of Minerals statute, which requires land protected by this statute to not be developed until all minerals of importance are removed from the land. Should cooler heads not prevail, this piece of legislation is sure to be at the center of the fight between Carlson and the SAGC group. If this law is enforced it would immediately become much more expensive for Carlson to develop the property in the ways they wish. They would still have the option to buy, but would have to seriously look at whether they can overpay for the property if they are not immediately allowed to build the 400 homes they have planned. In early April, after the initial uproar from the neighborhood, Molson Coors gave permission for Carlson to offer the

Hole 3# at Applewood Golf Course

Jefferson County, Prospect Recreation and Park District, an opportunity to buy the property for 16 million dollars, the amount Carlson had agreed to pay for the property. Presumably, Prospect Recreation and Park District could then operate the golf course, and the property would remain unchanged. Carlson agreed to give the District until November to secure the funds. In mid-June, I spoke with Kent Carlson, of Carlson Associates, and was told they had received correspondence from Prospect Recreation and Park District, stating they were no longer interested in purchasing the land, thus Carlson Associates were moving forward, preparing to file rezoning papers the following week. The next day I spoke with Jim Zimmerman, from the Prospect Recreation and Park District, who confirmed they had sent a letter to Carlson Associates notifying them they were not interested in purchasing the property from them, for the 16 million dollar asking price. However, he made it clear to me the District did have an interest in buying the property, just not from Carlson, and not for a price more than it was worth. Zimmerman stated they were having two appraisals done on the property. One on the value of the land as it is currently used, and a second, more complicated, geologi-

cal appraisal. Both are expected to be completed in August. Zimmerman also stated the District was actively preparing a bond issue for the November election to raise the funds needed to buy the property from Molson Coors, for fair market value, should the deal with Carlson become unable to be completed. It’s fairly obvious the powers at Carlson Associates realize it is enormously unlikely the Prospect Recreation and Park District will be allowed, or have the capability to purchase the property for their asking price. In early July, they finally submitted to Jefferson County, the application to rezone the property to allow 400 single family homes. When asked to respond to this filing, Ron Busterud, speaking for Save Applewood Golf Course, told Divot Magazine, “The coalition is formulating our response and plan to defeat this zoning request.” As a matter of full disclosure I must confess to the obvious. I am a hacker…um, I mean golfer. I’m writing for a golf magazine. It’s probably not hard to figure out that I’m pulling for the Dark Horse. It’s not so much that I think Molson Coors shouldn’t be allowed to sell their property to any law abiding buyer, or that Carlson Associates aren’t qualified to be that buyer, it’s more

complicated than that for me. This is a unique situation. More than one person I spoke with in researching this story told me they believed the battle to save the golf course wouldn’t be an issue if the Adolf Coors Company had not become the Molson Coors Company. The general feeling is that the people who have made the decision to sell this land to developers don’t have an understanding of the relationship that has always existed between the brewery and its neighbors, or how much this particular golf course is a part of that community. Ed Mate, Executive Director of the Colorado Golf Association shared a letter with me that he had written to Jefferson County Commissioner, and Case Manager for the redevelopment of the Applewood GC, Alan Tiefenbach. In his letter he makes a strong case as to why it is so important to save the Applewood GC. “Applewood represents an era in golf course design and construction that is in short supply. As a “core” golf course, not built around real estate development, the course can be maintained very efficiently. Efficiency means that the greens fees required to maintain the course are significantly less than many courses. If Applewood were to close, many of the golfers who currently play the course would not be able to find an alter-

native course within their budget. The many high school boys and girls golf teams who rely on Applewood would be competing for alternative course and driving range access or displaced all together. Golf, more than ever, needs courses like Applewood that are relatively inexpensive to maintain, can be played quickly and that don’t cost an arm and a leg…Put simply, we need to preserve Applewood GC, not for golf’s sake, but for the general benefit of the citizens of this community and the state as a whole.” I agree, and will close with a plea to the Beer Mug, and the Golden Shovel. Please go back and reread Mr. Mate’s words with a mind open to the possibility it might be better to rethink this project. Perhaps the Golden Shovel could use their get-out-of-the-deal card with the assurance the Beer Mug would use their services at a later time, let’s say to build a Beer Mug distributorship somewhere that would be of great benefit to the Golden Shovel. Then perhaps the Beer Mug could ride the white horse that gives the Dark Horse the only trophy they really want, their golf course. D

PowerBilt Introduces Air Force One DFX Tour Driver

sarah@parkburger.com

PowerBilt has introduced the latest model of its popular Air Force One driver, the Air Force One DFX Tour. “We are excited to introduce PowerBilt’s first true tour head. Through player input, along with the MyGolfSpy player testing, we were able to analyze all the data and input and develop a top performing Tour head. With the cg moved forward, and the benefit of the Nitrogen Charged technology, the Air Force One Tour will deliver the most accuracy of any tour head on the market,” says Ross Kvinge, President of PowerBilt. Armed with the same traditional clubhead shape, matte black finish, and PVD sole and clubface finish as the company’s DFX MOI model, this latest driver features a 9-gram Nitrogen Valve sole port that’s moved 20 cm forward towards the clubface. This moves the CG to a low, face-forward position that in turn promotes fast ball speed and low spin for more distance. Combined with our Nitrogen Charged Technology — Powerbilt’s patented method to reinforce the clubface without

adding weight by pressurizing the clubhead with nitrogen at up to 80 psi — it allows for the thinnest face in golf. There’s no need for internal metal bracing. That in turn boosts trampoline effect, smash factor, ball speed, consistency and accuracy — all while reducing spin. It’s a recipe for incredible distance, without golfers having to worry about any hot or dead spots on the face, Air Force One clubs have the largest sweet spot in golf — one that’s edge-to-edge, as pressurizing the clubhead with nitrogen creates equal pressure across the entire clubface. The Air Force One DFX Tour driver is available for right-handers only, in lofts of 8.5°, 9.5° and 10.5°. Standard shaft length is 45 ½”. The club is offered with Fujikura’s Pro 53, 63 and 73 shaft models, in R2, R, S and XS flexes. MSRP is $299.99. Top manufacturer shaft upgrades are available for an additional charge. Golfers can order the Air Force One DFX Tour driver by calling 888-4884653 or visiting www.powerbilt.com. D

Raccoon Creek Golf Course Says I Do To Weddings By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributing Writer

s you enter the long driveway from Bowles, through a grove of century old trees, you’ll see the first hint that something is different at Raccoon Creek. A bridal cottage, a nod to the elegance of the Victorian days with a sweeping porch, surrounded by tall shade trees and beautifully landscaped gardens. To the west of the cottage is the remodeled barn, traditionally painted red with white trim. Say I Do to the new wedding and events facility, the Barn at Raccoon Creek From an old milker’s barn to an award winning wedding and event center, Raccoon Creek debuted its new facility expansion on Mother’s Day. The barn atmosphere is unique to the Denver urban area, providing a rustic yet elegant backdrop for weddings and events. The Barn at Raccoon Creek is aptly named as its historic roots dig deep into its soil from as long ago as the 1800s, and much of its history is consisted of farming and ranching. The land and original farm buildings

today remain in the Grant Family, although much of the original property has been sold, except for what we know now as Raccoon Creek Golf Course. The family is still active in the management of the facility – consistently upgrading and refreshing the course and its buildings. The recent facility expansion started as a seed of an idea, according to Don Allen, General Manager of Raccoon Creek Golf Course. “I always wanted a cart barn closer to the golf facility, so I suggested to the owners that we needed to remove the dilapidated “cart barn/milker’s house” and start over. The little idea became a

complete wedding and event complex with full-fledged commercial kitchen,

grooms loft, Grant Courtyard (tent ready), ceremony site, bridal cottage, and sales office.” From hosting its first event in May to the grand opening on June 3, the Barn at Raccoon Creek has been met with rave reviews, including ranking second in the “10 Stunning Places to get Married in Colorado.” Already 62 weddings are booked at the Barn at Raccoon Creek, and at one wedding per day, this allows the guests to relax and enjoy the moment. QUIVIRA... A New Standard of

Excellence in Los Cabos

n a dramatic site at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula marked by windswept dunes, sheer cliffs and desert foothills, Quivira Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course opened to acclaim in December 2014, has redefined the golf experience in Los Cabos, Mexico. Overlooking the place where the Sea of Cortes meets the Pacific Ocean, the epic $40 million layout commences at sea level near the rolling surf before climbing to higher ground, where the scenery is a match for the challenge. “Our team has worked with the canvas Mother Nature provided to create one of the most spectacular courses in the world,” Nicklaus said. “This property afforded us a rare opportunity because of its topographic diversity and natural environment.” In addition to thrilling risk-reward scenarios, Quivira offers more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Cabo. All 18 holes feature panoramic views of the sea, which swells with breaching whales from December through March. Among the course highlights at Quivira, which stretches to 7,139 yards (par 72) from the back tees, is the exhilarating 10minute drive to the fifth hole, which crosses arroyo-spanning bridges and traces a switchback route up the side of a mountain. At more than 275 feet above the foaming surf, the tee at the short par 4 fifth commands a vertigo-inducing perch. Equally breathtaking is the par 3 sixth hole, its concave cliff-top green carved from the base of a massive sand dune. Quivira then weaves around a historic lighthouse and proceeds

through the dunes and desert, returning players to the sea at the par-5 12th hole, an enormous double-dogleg that zigzags down an island-style fairway bounded by sand. Behind the deep bunkerless green is a sharpened pole fence, a remnant from the movie set of Troy. The tiny par 3 13th, its minuscule green set atop a giant pinnacle of granite rising 150 feet from the sand and surf, calls for a do-or-die shot over a yawning abyss. As is true throughout the layout, Nicklaus has built a friendly bail-out area on the left side of the green that feeds cautious shots onto the putting surface. Unlike many of Nicklaus’s earlier creations, Quivira doesn’t play quite as tough as it looks. Quivira’s finale is fantastic. The 16th and 17th holes are exceptionally sturdy par 4’s that plunge down the face of a mountain to fairways bellied into valleys that bristle with cactus and rock. At 486 yards from the tips, the windswept par-4 18th is a classic links-style closer that returns players to sea level, its undulating, infinityedge green set directly above the beach. During the round, players can refresh

themselves at three comfort stations interspersed throughout the all-inclusive facility. The drive to the fifth tee is rewarded by a visit to an open-air, cliff-hanging café with tables spaced around a covered stone patio high above the beach and sea. Light bites such as tuna sliders, fish tacos and regional specialties are served, as are refreshments. A Quivira golf staff member is on hand to take digital photos of resort guests at one of the most spectacular oncourse comfort stations in the world. The “Oasis,” which serves as a halfway house for golfers transiting to and from the eighth and 11th holes, showcases the culinary talents of the resort’s chefs in a lovely hilltop setting perched above rolling dunes and verdant fairways. Among the feature items available from the open kitchen are ceviche, barbecued shrimp, and inventive takes on classic Baja cuisine, from tacos and tamales to mini-burritos. The full-service bar features a wide range of Mexican beers and a fine selection of blanco, reposado and anejo tequilas. Players can refresh themselves a final time at the self-serve comfort station at the

16th tee, which sits high above the fairway and marks the layout’s return to home. Complementing the golf experience at Quivira is a thatched-roof, multi-story clubhouse set between the first tee and the 18th green. This stylish beachfront clubhouse, roughly the height of a palm tree, sits directly above the sandy shore a short distance from the rolling Pacific surf. The clubhouse’s exterior terraces are paved in brick and are accented by handlaid pebble borders. A large, open-air rectangular bar, which serves as Quivira’s 19th Hole, is highlighted by a fire pit and beautiful views of the surging sea. There’s also a casual steakhouse with ample outdoor seating areas shaded by slatted rattan ceilings and oriented to the sea and Land’s End. Beside the clubhouse is a spacious, double-sided practice facility that parallels the ocean, with the sandy beach and rolling surf a mere wedge shot away from the verdant turfgrass. There’s also an elongated 18-hole putting course and a short game practice area where golfers can fine-tune their chipping, pitching and sand play. Quivira is accessible to guests of Pueblo Bonito Oceanfront Resorts and Spas, which consist of four properties: the adjacent Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort & Spa and Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Resort & Spa; and, in nearby Cabo San Lucas, Pueblo Bonito Rosé Resort & Spa and Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos. Shuttle service to and from the golf club is included within the Quivira development. For additional information access the web site at www.quiviragolfclub.com. D
