Golf Anti-Counterfeiting Group Seized 2 Millionth Counterfeit Product Milestone marks group’s commitment to its mission, continued impact in battle to keep golf real The U.S. Golf Manufacturers AntiCounterfeiting Working Group (The Golf Group) announced that it has reached a historic milestone in its ongoing battle against fakes — the seizure of the 2 millionth counterfeit product since the group was formed more than a decade ago. The landmark seizure was achieved during two successful raids conducted in collaboration with local law enforcement authorities in Dongguan, a major industrial center in Guangdong province, China. The milestone reinforces the group’s commitment to fighting illegal counterfeiting while protecting consumers, the brands and the game of golf. “The seizure of the 2 millionth piece of counterfeit golf equipment is a validation of our efforts as a group and an inspiration for us to keep fighting to protect the consumers, the brands and the game that is so important to all of us,” said Stephen Gingrich, Vice President of Human Resources,

And we are more committed than even to keep golf real.” The raids were carried out by local government law enforcement authorities in Dongguan and took place in April and May. In total, authorities seized more than 36,000 counterfeit golf products, including grips, club heads and shafts. The raid is the latest successful shutdown of efforts to produce, distribute and sell counterfeit golf products worldwide. The raids that took place this spring included the seizure of 350 club heads, 300 golf shafts, and more than 35,000 golf grips, which were counterfeits of a variety of brands. Since 2004, The Golf Group’s collaboration with worldwide government enforcement authorities has led to the seizure of more than two million pieces of counterfeited gear, including clubs, club heads, shafts, grips, balls, bags, gloves, and apparel imitating some of the game’s most trusted brands. Additionally, the group has been vigilant in pursuing legal action to shut down more than 1,500 websites selling counterfeit products and accessories. “The group has been together for more than a decade and we have made a lot of great progress,” said Kristin Strojan, Legal Counsel Trademark and Brand Protection

at TaylorMade Golf Company. “We’re working more closely with authorities every day, finding new ways to identify and shut down counterfeit operations. We know there are still counterfeiters out there but we also know we’re making it a lot harder for them to stay in business. Combine that with our education efforts for consumers and we think we’ve got a winning formula in the battle against fakes.” About the Golf Manufacturers Anti-Counterfeiting Working Group The Golf Anti-Counterfeiting Group consists of six of the most well-known golf companies in the world—Acushnet Company, whose brands are Titleist, FootJoy and Scotty Cameron; Callaway-Odyssey; Srixon, Cleveland Golf and XXIO; PING; PXG, TayorMade. Formed in 2004, the Golf Anti-Counterfeiting Group has supported the efforts of international law enforcement and government agencies to conduct raids and investigations of counterfeit operations, as well as raise public awareness of the issue. Since its inception, the Golf Group’s legal efforts led to the shutdown of more than 1,500 websites and authorities have seized more than two million counterfeit golf products. D

Paul Named Honorable Mention All-American

20th Buffalo Golfer To Earn All-American Recognition

Yannik Paul, who set or shared in 23 records over the course of his golfing career at the University of Colorado, has been named to the honorable mention PING AllAmerica team, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Thursday. Paul was CU’s team leader in stroke average at 70.24, which was also good for fourth in the Pac-12 Conference and 11th in the nation, and in the process set the CU single-season record; he broke his older twin’s (Jeremy) mark of 70.66 set in 2015-16. His spring average of 69.64 shattered the old best as well, and became the first school record for an average under 70 in any category. He was the team leader or tied for the lead in 21 statistical categories, perhaps the most impressive the fact that he has just six holes out of 612 worse than bogey all year (four doubles and two triples). Paul became CU’s first golfer to earn first-team All-Pac 12 recognition when honored this past season, when he became the seventh player in school history to play in four NCAA Championships, and the 25th to play in four conference championships.

He was also CU’s co-Male Athlete of the Year for all sports, sharing the honor with skier Ola Johansen. “Yannik being named to the All-America team is recognition of an outstanding year,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said.

“It is a bi-product of all of his hard work and determination. He is now in a special group of Buff greats.” He is the 20th Buffalo to earn some kind of All-America recognition, the fifth in the 12 years that Edwards has been at the reins of the CU program. All were named honorable mention: Edward McGlasson (2006), Patrick Grady and Derek Tolan (2009) and Jeremy Paul (2016). Grady is now CU’s assistant coach. This past season, Paul also led in subpar rounds (24), rounds of par or better (26), top 20 finishes (eight), birdies (143) and in average by round for the first (70.55), middle (70.08) and final (70.09) rounds. He tied for second in the Pac-12 Championships, as his 68-69-68-67—272 (-12) effort was four back of medalist Justin Suh of USC. He also placed 12th at the NCAA West Regional in Stockton (71-69-72—212, -4). His top finish was his first major win, as he was co-medalist in ASU’s Thunderbird (67-6669—202, -11), just the sixth time at CU a player scored three rounds in the 60s in the same event (and then went out the next time

at Pac-12s and did it four straight). He set the school mark of 10 straight subpar rounds, breaking the mark of eight he had set earlier in the spring. The last seven of those rounds were in the 60s, tying that school mark. Also set the school single-season record with nine tournaments under par (he held the old mark of seven with his brother Jeremy), with the last five of those in a row, also a school best. His 16 rounds in the 60s were the second-most in a single-season in school history. Paul’s career average of 72.11 is second only to Jeremy’s figure of 71.72 in CU history. He posted subpar cumulative scores in 22 of 47 tournaments (tied for the most), with 24 top 20 finishes (sixth most at CU), 13 top 10 efforts (tied for eighth) and eight top 5 (sixth). He had 73 rounds of par or better (one shy of the school best, 74 by his brother), 63 career subpar rounds (second to his brother’s 66), 37 of those in the 60s (also second to Jeremy’s 40). Paul finished his career with 11 rounds of par or better, the first 10 of which were subpar, both of which were also records. D

The Poker Chip Drill to help putting distance control By GOLFTEC DIVOT Contributing Writer

Two Great Shots at Two Great Deals

Putting is an art. The ability to aptly read small undulations in the green, start the ball on the proper line and ensure it has the correct speed, after all, can require the acute touch of a masterful artist. Putting, however, is also a science. Especially when it comes to distance control, since blowing putts 6 feet past on one hole then 4 feet short on the next can often feel like an unsolvable math equation. Sound familiar to your own triumphs and struggles on the green? Well, here’s a component of your putting that, if improved, can help to combine the best of both the art and science: angle of attack. The vertical measurement of how the club is moving through the ball at impact, angle of attack is just as important with the putter as it is with the driver. Among other inconsistencies, a stroke that moves too downward into the ball can impart varied spin, and a stroke that’s too upward can create contact issues. Both can lead to lack of putting distance control, so let’s boil it down to a simple drill that can ensure your putting angle of attack is right on the money. The Poker Chip Drill for angle of attack and putting distance control A general guideline for the putting stroke is to have the attack angle moving slightly upward at impact. The Poker Chip Drill helps you do just that by stacking two poker chip ball markers and setting up to them as if the ball were there, then making a stroke while trying to

clip off the top one only. If you hit both ball markers, it’s likely your angle of attack is moving too far downward. If you miss them entirely, it’s likely your angle of attack is moving too far upward. Once you get the hang of consistently knocking off the top marker, replace with a ball and start hitting putts with the same stroke. After a little practice, your improved attack angle should start helping with distance control and you’ll soon notice those frustrating three-putts are a thing of the past! Nice Drive

2018 Dodge Challenger GT It‘s normal to think that a muscle car has an aggressive look, a big engine, rear-wheel drive, and a tiny back seat. Well Dodge wants you to think different when it comes to the 2018 Challenger GT. Even though you'd never be able to tell that the GT is different from other Challengers just by looking at it, this new Challenger offers owners the option of driving in all four seasons. With the smaller V6 engine and allwheel drive, this is the first real attempt by any automaker to turn a retro muscle car into a real wintercapable vehicle. Like all Challengers, the GT feels big when you drive it, but the added all-wheel drive traction provides more stability and security. And yes, it has enough power to impress but not so much that you find yourself continually getting into

trouble. The front wheels can accept up to 38 percent of the power, but it's rear-biased most of the time. The ride is a little on the firm side, but personally that’s what I like. The GT will get to 60 in six-seconds, which is decent given its additional AWD weight and smaller V6 engine. Just don't try to drag race other muscle cars, unless it's in the snow. The brake pedal feel is good, and the steering is surprisingly precise with good feedback. Even though the GT is heavy, the performance suspension provides responsive handling and makes it easy to take corners at higher speeds. Muscle cars might seem behind the times when it comes to tech but the

2018 Challenger has done more than catch up. Uconnect 4C is one of the best systems out there and the menus are designed well. Physical controls are big and easy to use while driving, especially audio and climate controls. As you can see by the pic above, this vehicle has the same iconic muscle car look with its bulging rear haunches, hood vents, and large circular headlights. The front end bears the exact same look as the

Challenger SXT with the slim twin grille, and overhanging hoodline which provides a hint of evil. Muscle cars typically do not provide much room, but the Challenger GT actually does very well compared to the competition. And yes, it will hold you and your playing partners golf clubs. The base price is just over $33K. For more information please visit www.dodge.com/challenger

Hidden spring hinges, rubber components to absorb moisture at the frame tips, adjustable silicone nose pads, maximized viewing angles, state of the art lens materials for optimum visual clarity, there is as much technology at work in the sunglasses golfers wear these days as in the drivers and fairway woods they swing with. No more excuses about whiffing on a swing because of glare or frames slipping from sweat. Still, premium manufacturers like Bolle, Serengeti, Costa Del Mar, Revo and Oakley are constantly toiling to bring improvements to the visual game. Whether a golfer has a prefer-

ence for plastic lenses which are lightweight, impact- and scratch-resistant, or glass lenses that have the greatest clarity and are scratch resistant, one of the key components of quality sunglasses is polarization. “For many, if not most, sunglass buyers, polarization is extremely important. There is simply no other technology better at neutralizing the negative effects of glare. And while it does add cost, consumers definitely recognize the value of opting for polarized sunglasses,” Jim Katz, Marketing Consultant for Bolle/Serengeti said. Because golfers are able to enjoy their sport in a wide variety of settings from the mountains and deserts to beach layouts, one of the improvements centers on the filtering abilities of lenses that

adapt to changing light conditions. “A good thing for both changing settings (i.e. desert, ocean courses) but also evolving conditions (sunset, fog..) are photohromic lenses which change tint depending on current availability of light,” explained Katz. “You start out your round on a sunny day but by the back 9 it becomes overcast, well those automatically adjust for the differences.” While protection from UV rays are key, more and more manufacturers are also offering polarization to their models again with the aim for improving truer vision, but also to fight an element faced in other activities. “Golfing sunglasses share traits with water sports where a key is reducing glare, particularly on the greens so one can see the breaks better,” Al Perkinson Vice President of Marketing for Costa

Del Mar Sunglasses said. Technology aside, inspiration from fashion coming from the street is at the core of where the trend in the active lifestyle sunglasses market is going. “Creating a lens technology that adapts to different light levels in these different environments that is at the same time using fashions from the street using a palette of frame styles and colors is the market trend,” adds Perkinson. “Being able to go from golfing to an activity in town to biking to casual activities is strong”. Concerning current trends regarding frames, Jenny Gordillo, Costa Sunglasses International Sales Manager states: “We have seen a shift from higher wrapped around sunglasses to flatter styles. Customer preference is moving towards more versatile frames that blend performance with style, as

customers are becoming more educated and interested in protecting their eyes without compromising style and comfort.” Even if one offers the full gambit of technical components including tinting, polarization, photochromic lenses, mirroring, scratch-resistant coating, anti-reflective coating, UV coating, it remains very important for a golfer to feel a personal sense of style and manufacturers are aware of this. Never before have sunglasses both on and off the course been available in such a wide range of frame colors and lens tint options. With the dizzying array of choices, it is enough to give one a headache, but that won’t happen if you apply the same diligence to your next pair of sunglasses as you do your sand wedge. Look for substance in addition to fashion, it will be worth it. D

The Stryker from Revo is a bold, oversized square frame. Inspired by the surfers of the West Coast of America.

Clean lines and a comfortable fit make this classic aviator look in Revo’s Observer model a smart choice.

The ergonomic design of Bolle’s 6th Sense will optimize your field of vision, regardless of your activity.

The Carlo Large from Serengeti is a classical frame with refined details that give these sunglasses timeless elegance.

Costa Del Mar’s latest, the Rincon, has a classic West Coast straight bridge and offers 100% polarized lenses.

How committed and confident are you? By Kathleen Heiney DIVOT Magazine Contributing Writer

“Don’t hit the shot you think you should, hit the shot you know you can!” My favorite quote from Bob Rotella. How often have you stepped up to a shot and said “I should be able to get it there with this club” or “if I hit is just right it will be perfect” If you make the statement “I should” in a sentence, during a round, you clearly are not committed. Also, if you think you are going to hit it just right you are more than likely going to hit is just wrong. Why? Because you lack confidence! Golf is a game of misses. You have heard it several times but we continue to try and talk ourselves into thinking we “should” be able to do something different. Let’s go back to the quote. “Hit the shot you know you can”. So much of golf is shot commitment and confidence. When we question whether or not we should do something in a certain way, we are already questioning if we can. How well do you know your misses, fundamentals of the game, distance, swing faults etc.? Do you have a favorite distance? Do you listen to your gut when selecting a club? Are you familiar with your

own swing faults? Do you have a routine to get you back on track? These are just a few fundamentals of golf to consider in helping you improve your shot commitment and confidence. Let’s talk about misses. I have been playing for over 40 years and I can honestly say I have had the same miss since I was 7 years old, to the right. I have certainly tried to change it but it still stays relatively right. That being said I now play my misses. It is predictable and that helps me create a committed shot. I have a favorite distance, 80 yards so I purposely will set myself up for that distance the best I

“I don’t believe in philosophies, I believe in fundamentals” - Jack Nicklaus

can. This helps me stay confident during a round. I go with my gut when choosing clubs, if I waiver I am more than likely not committed which results in a poor golf shot. These are a few examples of ways to help players create better shot commitment and confidence. We think we know our golf swing, game and misses, but most players do not. Most often we try to create shots in a round that we think we should not the ones we know we can. So how do we better understand and know our misses, distances, club selection etc.? We journal. The next 3 rounds take a journal on the course with you. Record your misses, how you recover, your favorite distances and most of all how these shots make you feel. The purpose of this is to create more confidence in the abilities you have not the ones you think you should. This will propel your game into a whole new world of committed shots and better confidence! D Kathleen Heiney is a LPGA Class A Professional, Personal Trainer and Yoga Instructor. Course Feature

Thorncreek Golf Course... the long wait is finally over After closing for play on October 9, 2016, Thorncreek Golf Course has undergone a major 21-month renovation project.

The 26-year old golf facility, owned and operated by the city of Thornton, was in need of upgrades to enhance playability and improve the long term viability of the grounds. A great job was done by the redesign team of Baxter Spann Golf Course Architect, Landscapes Unlimited and city of Thornton Staff. The bulk of the project was building a state of the art irrigation system which gives the maintenance staff greater control and efficiency over watering the golf course and providing better playing conditions. The new irrigation system is 60% more green efficient than the old and uses 1520% less water. Also the Fertigation Injection System allows maintenance to run fertilizer applications through the irrigation system. Upgraded drainage systems and bunker renovations will help with keeping playing conditions consistent during the unpredictable weather conditions Colorado is known for. Big Dry Creek, impacting most of the front nine, underwent redesign to im-

prove flood control and enhance long-term sustainability. In terms of playability for the golfer, Thorncreek has changed the look and feel of most holes. All holes received new grass on all tees, fairways, greens and some rough areas. The first tee shot starting your day offers a different feel with the fairway bunker removed to provide a wider landing area. The green complex was rebuilt wider and larger to accept varying shot types. The

often criticized par 5 16th underwent the most drastic changes of any hole on the golf course. The drainage ditch that crossed the fairway in the landing zone has been removed thus creating an inviting tee shot for all players on a monster hole that can stretch 650 yards. The green was redesigned and moved 20 yards away from the hazard offering a more forgiving approach. Other holes with noticeable changes were: #6, #9, #12, #14, and #18.

Another exciting feature to the renovation is the change and feel of the clubhouse. The golf shop and inside seating area have a more modern feel. The highlight would have to be the new outdoor patio with bar seating and multiple tv’s for a fun environment with a great view of the golf course and mountains. This new all-weather space will be ideal for lunch, dinner and larger groups as well. A great job was done by D2C Architects, Mark Young Construction, and city of Thornton Staff. Lastly, the practice facility has been upgraded giving players a professional look with new target greens and a 320 square yard teeing area. The new 13,000 square foot putting green will be great for practice or a little pre or post-round putt-off within your foursome. For information and updates please go to www.thorncreekgc.com D
