Cutting-Edge Technology Keeps Grand Elk Golf Club on Course rand Elk Golf Club has added the revolutionary Golfboard, a battery-powered, stand-up personal transportation device with 4-wheel drive that adds the fun of snowboarding or skateboarding to a round of golf. The 14-year-old course is the first in the Winter Park-Grand Lake area with the cutting-edge technology. GolfBoards make the earth-surfing outing healthier, faster, and more environmentally friendly. “Golfboard is fun, and it provides a bit of a workout for those feeling guilty about not walking,” Golf Digest said when it declared the innovation its New Age winner. “Technology has affected the clubs we play with, the data golfers have available, and now, even how we get around the golf course,” says Mike Ritter, Grand Elk’s PGA Head Professional. “Golfboard is perfect for Colorado mountain golf because it puts the focus back on the fun instead of the score.” The equipment, designed to hold golfer and clubs, weighs about 125 pounds and can travel at 5 to 10 mph. Manufacturer’s tests showed golfers on the Golfboard can finish an 18-hole round in just over two hours. The lithium battery can go up to 18 miles on a single charge. Grand Elk has also leased a fleet of 2017

Club Car carts with the latest Visage GPS system, a major upgrade from its original 2003 GPS. The intuitive touch-pad GPS offers enhanced graphics and distance information for the golfer. “You can even order your food and beverages while you’re out on the course,” Ritter says. The in-game improvements continue a

sweeping overhaul of Grand Elk, the only Craig Stadler Signature Golf Course in Colorado, since it was purchased by neighboring homeowners in 2013. The new ownership has improved the course, the Grille restaurant, the kitchen, the Clubhouse, and the maintenance fleet. “Now in 2017 come more improvements

Understanding the Keys to Proper Alignment By C.J. Perry, PGA DIVOT Contributing Writer y students at GOLFTEC Denver Tech Center often suffer from one of the most common faults in golf: poor alignment.

Believe it or not, alignment can be challenging for even the highest levels of golfers, and poor alignment leads to improper swing habits. One of the challenges with alignment is the fact that our eyes are inside the golf ball with most of our full swing shots. Unlike putting, and chipping to a degree, our eyes are not over our target line. Our perspective makes alignment a chore!

When you watch a PGA Tour event on television, you’ll notice players have a precise pre-shot routine, and part of this routine is proper alignment. When tour players align

themselves to their target you’ll notice every single one stands behind the golf ball to start. What they are doing is pinpointing the line from the golf ball to their target. After they have visualized their target line, many players look for a spot in front of their golf ball along that line, possibly only a few inches away from the ball. Many instructors refer to this as an “intermediary target.” As a tour player walks up to address the golf ball, they first focus on getting their club face pointed at their intermediary target. Then they set their feet, hips and shoulders parallel to where their clubface is aimed.

Most amateur golfers do the opposite. They align their body to what they think is their target and then aim their club face parallel to that line. The result? Poor alignment and subconscious confusion, which lead to compensations during the swing to get the ball started on the intended target line.

One of the best ways to visualize the parallel lines is to imagine train tracks. Your feet,

start by checking your alignment. Once you know where you’re actually aiming, it’s much easier to determine whether your ball is starting on line or not, and if the ball is curving left or right of that line.

A great way to practice alignment is by placing a golf club or alignment stick on the ground while you practice to help you visualize the parallel lines your body and the club face create.

For sure a golfer needs some block practice (fundamental development) to keep their putting setup and mechanics sharp, but most of a practice session should consist of developing putting skill to be able to transfer it to the golf course. This transfer is achieved through random practice (skill development drills) and competitive practice (pressure drills with consequences). For a type of random practice, try this putting drill called “Pro Average Drill”: Putt two balls from five feet, three balls from 10 feet, four balls from 15 feet, and five balls from 20 feet. You must make one ball from each location to match the Tour Average. To increase the difficulty, change the angle and slope amounts. To gain strokes on the field, remove one ball from each location and still make one from each distance. Then you will match the tour winners’ average.

olf is an endurance sport. Many people might argue, but the truth is our bodies have to be able to perform a repetitive motion, in a sustainable manner, in order to execute a good round of golf. If that is the case, then why do so many players think they have to continually change their swing just to gain a few yards? Take Tiger Woods for example. When he was young he had a great golf swing and won many majors. Then he decided to change it, over and over again. What was the result? His body could not sustain the motion and resulted in permanent injury. I am not saying that we can’t make some changes to our swing, but if we do it has to be accessible and more importantly sustainable in your body. How then do we determine what is an accessible and sustainable golf swing? The practice of yoga is a great way to get to know and understand how our bodies moves. In addition, it also teaches us what works and perhaps what doesn’t.

The more we get to know our bodies, the better we understand what is accessible and if we can actually sustain it. As an instructor, I see 100’s of different swings every season. I get the same question over and over, why can’t I be more consistent and get the ball to do what I want it to do all the time. The answer may be it is physically impossible.

I have been playing golf for over 40 years, ever since I could remember I have always had a fade. As a teacher and a professional I wanted to have a draw. Why you ask? It looks good and you get more distance. I worked on drawing the ball for two seasons, and on occasion it worked but it was not sustainable, what is, is my fade. The point is my body will

only swing the club in a way that is accessible and sustainable, no matter how hard I try to change it, it will stay relatively the same. Every waking moment of everyday our bodies are changing. The practice of yoga is a great way to tune in each and every moment to what is happening. Not necessarily what is NOT happening. aster Planning for a golf course is the backbone of an entire development. It is critically important. If the master plan is great, then the golf project and real estate has a great chance of success. If it is a bad master plan then the profitability of the development will constantly have challenges. A well designed

master plan is fundamental both for golf, and also for surrounding real estate. The sale of surrounding real estate is most often the key to sustain the building of the golf course. Usually the biggest problem in master planning for golf, is leaving enough room for golf. Often developers want to squeeze in as many houses as possible, and not give ample room for golf. This creates a tight, golf course, and dangerous living conditions

for houses butting up to the limits of the golf course. Also, general land planners may waste land by not knowing golf, and create open areas, that do not optimize land use, which reduces profits. Golf course architects should always be consulted with in the very beginning of the Master Plan. They are the golf design experts, and can make the difference between a fabulous, successful development project, or one that goes belly up. When analyzed there are two types of

golf course layouts. There is a “core” design, and a “non-core” design. A core design is where the golf holes are contiguous and form one large, uninterrupted open space. Examples of some “core” golf courses in Colorado are Wellshire Golf Course, Applewood Golf Course, Indian Tree Golf Course, Raccoon Creek Golf Course or the Olde Loveland Golf Course. The golf course is one, undivided unit with development only around the perimeter of the golf area. In Spain, we designed the acclaimed Sherry Golf, in Jerez, Spain. It is a core golf course with 27 holes. The core golf course is one large undivided green area with housing and development only around the outside perimeter. Meadow Hills in Aurora, and Foothills in Jefferson County are other typical examples of “core” golf courses. Lakewood Country Club is a “core” golf course. The amount of land for a regulation 18 hole golf course may usually range from about 110 acres to 200 acres and sometimes more. Obviously, the more land available, the more superior the golf experience. Many, many factors influence necessary space for a proper golf course and safe living conditions for housing adjacent to the golf course. A “non-core” design can take several forms. The golf holes could be in singular in design, with real estate development on both sides of the holes. The width for a single corridor golf course is usually about from 300 feet to 450 feet. A different design is a double layout, in which the golf holes run out and back next to each other. This forms a wider corridor for golf with two holes next to each other, and development on both sides of the two parallel holes. The width for the corridor for two holes can be about from 480 to 600 feet. Again, it is better to have wider corridors for either style of design. Corridor width depends on numerous criteria and factors that the golf architect understands. Sometimes there is a variation within a project. Nine holes could be core in form, and the other nine a single or double loop of holes, or a combination of both. Every golf project is different. Each development has a program of priorities and site conditions that are distinct. Each type of layout has advantages and disadvantages. A core design consumes much less land usually, and is more visually appealing, being one large open, green space. Also, the golfer and maintenance vehicles do not have to cross any roads or between houses, for the entire round of golf. The core design needs less pipe for irrigation, less tubes for drainage, is much easier for maintenance, and takes less time to play because all tees can be closer to following greens. There are no roads to contend with, or no underpasses to build, which can be expensive. Core golf courses have less out of bounds which is conducive to faster play. A lot of out of bounds on non-core courses can

greatly slow up play. Non-core designs offer more front line housing for the developer to maximize housing plots and other types of development, such as office parks. Some major disadvantages are that these courses take longer to play, are more difficult to maintain, and less visually appealing. Looking at rows and rows of houses is much different than seeing a large swath of green space. The non-core golf courses are more expensive to build and maintain , as they are stretched out, and travel time is considerably longer. Non-core golf courses usually consume much more land than a core golf course. Non-core golf courses are usually inferior for spectators, often requiring much more walking to see the action. A good example of a single corridor golf course is Murphy Creek in Aurora, Colorado. Both nines meander in a single file loop. Inside of each nine holes is an island

of land designated for development of houses. Also on the outside, front line housing is planned on most every hole. This form maximizes front line development. We designed Murphy Creek because the developer and the city wanted this type of golf layout. Other examples of totally single corridor golf is Buffalo Run in Commerce City, Colorado, and Plum Creek in Castle Rock, Colorado. Good examples of a double width golf layout is Raccoon Creek or The Meadows, where the holes go out and back in, usually running somewhat parallel. Both nines are basically double width corridors, and are located in Littleton, Colorado. Another example of a double corridor golf course is Legacy Ridge in Westminster, Colorado. A combination of single corridor golf, and double corridor golf, is the golf layout we designed in Layos, Spain. The front nine is mostly single file holes that loop around

an area of development. The back nine is designed as a double corridor, with most holes next to one another. The existing topography was a big factor in deciding how to route the holes for a great golf course, and how to maximize great areas for real estate. The developer wanted a superior golf experience intertwined with fabulous housing plots, higher in elevation, able to have commanding views to the golf course. Normally it is best if the golf course consumes lower areas or valleys in a development, and higher areas are left for buildings and roads. The golf course then can absorb drainage and the structures are located away from flooding and also have good views over the golf course, and open space. The entire development is highly successful. For the owner/developer, it is imperative to include the golf course architect in the initial stages of master planning for golf. Many developers may only rely on an engineer, or

building architect or a land planner to design the final master plan that goes through the permitting process. Obtaining permits may take several years, and if the master plan is faulty, then the owner is then stuck with many problems. The golf architect may be faced with areas that are to narrow for golf, or areas unsuitable for golf. Bad areas for hotels or housing could affect both the golf experience and the ability to sell lots. A variety of serious issues and problems may leave the golf architect little option to design a good golf course. The solution is to include the golf architect working in conjunction with land planners and engineers from the outset to obtain optimum results. With experienced experts in each field working back and forth, they eventually obtain a great final Master Plan. Proper land planning with golf is very complex and experts are needed from the start to create a profitable and successful development. D

The championship, contested August 30September 1 at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver, has doubled the previous year’s purse from $75,000 to $150,000 and made first place prize an astounding $50,000, unprecedented for state opens and mini-tour events. “The CoBank Colorado Opens are already widely recognized as the premier state opens in the nation,” said Kevin Laura, CEO of the Colorado Open Golf Foundation. “Doubling the Women’s Open purse will take the tournament to a whole new level.
