Denver Golf Expo tradition, South Suburban Parks & Recreation is returning to the 2017 Expo, continuing the tradition of saving green on its Fore Golf Program.

New & Improved Junior Golf Central Returns By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributing Writer

The always popular Junior Golf Central returns to the Denver Golf Expo with new activities and improved location. The past few years, the location has been in the far left corner of the Expo. The new and improved interactive junior golfer area is sporting a new location, right up front near the entrance. This convenient location will be the golf center of fun, keeping kids entertained and also teaches them more about the game of golf. The ever-popular interactive Drive, Chip and Putt Competition will also return allowing juniors to compete in daily contests against juniors their own age for special prizes. A mini golf putt-putt area will also challenge the kids. Addition to the area will be a Junior Golf fitness area, concentrating and balance, strength, and screenings that we can do for junior golfers. During the Expo and beyond into 2017,

Serving Wynkoop Craft Beers at the Denver Golf Expo The 2017 Denver Golf Expo will officially serve a selection of craft beers Wynkoop Brewing Company®,where they believe brewing is an art. It all started in 1988 when LoDo had no ballpark, no valet parking, no farm-totable restaurants. Just four guys who wanted to make really good beer. Those four guys were John Hickenlooper, Jerry Williams, Mark Schiffler and Russell Schehrer. They opened the first craft Brewery in Denver on Skid Row in the century-old J. S. Brown Mercantile Building. They built a bar by the building’s old vault, and another bar in the back of the building’s expansive showroom. They installed a small brewhouse on the main floor. They placed 22 pool tables on the second floor and called it Wynkoop Billiards. Beer drinkers across the state braved the sketchy ghost town that was LoDo in the late 80’s for billiards and pints of Russell’s unexpected beer styles. He was one of the first professional brewers in the country to try his hand at mead-making, doppel alt, and cream stout. He was honored by the Brewers Association when he passed with the Russell Schehrer. Award for

Innovation in Brewing, awarded each year at the Craft Brewers Conference to a brewer who knocks down doors. Almost thirty years later, Wynkoop is a Denver institution, still known for innovative, ballsy brewers who put just about anything in their beer, including Rocky Mountain oysters, gummy bears and green chiles. Drill Your Driver UP for Deep Drives! By Chad Miller DIVOT Contributing Writer hances are you’ve worked on hitting down into the ball and taking a divot in front of it for solid contact and piercing shots at the target. But it’s good to note that while that can do wonders for your iron game, the descending angle of attack can wreak havoc if copied with the driver because of the club’s longer length and lack of loft, so here’s a simple drill to make sure you swing UP on the ball to bomb it with the big stick.

Drill your Driver UP • Tee up your driver like usual and place another peg into the ground about four inches in front of it along the target line about the same height as your teed-up ball. • Place a third tee about two inches behind the teed-up ball along the target

line, this one laid flat on the ground. • Hit shots repeatedly in this fashion and try to miss both the front and back tees. Diagnosis If you miss the forward tee but hit the back tee (shown at left below) … your body is likely moving too far away from the target or ball, or that your wrists have started to “release” too early, which can create too

much dynamic loft at impact and even make you hit the ground behind the ball, neither of which are good for long, consistent drives. If you miss the back tee but hit the forward tee with these shots (shown center below) … your angle of approach is descending too much, which means your upper body has likely moved too far toward the target or ball, and that you have incon-

sistent contact, “ballooned” shots with too much spin, and varying trajectory patterns from swing to swing. If you miss both tees (shown at right below) … nice job! You’re likely now within a desirable range for angle of approach with your driver (generally anywhere from 2–5 degrees moving UP into the ball for most amateurs is ideal, although many variables determine this), and your face contact, spin rates and ball speed are closer to being maximized for long, towering drives! Denver Selects World-Class Teams to Compete for Redesign of City Park Golf Course Course will remain open through 2017 and will reopen in 2019

he City and County of Denver today announced that three design-build contractor teams have been selected to submit proposals for the redesign of City Park Golf Course. The teams include some of the industry’s top golf course designers, engineers, architects and construction contractors that have the unique experience, knowledge and expertise to meet the needs of Denver’s golf community and the neighborhoods around City Park.

The three teams chosen to submit proposals are: • Landscapes Unlimited, LLC, with golf course architect/designer Robert Trent Jones II • Saunders Construction, Inc., with golf course architect/designer Icon Golf Studio • SEMA Construction, Inc., with golf course architect/designer DYE Designs

These three were selected from nine teams that responded to the city’s Request for Qualifications that was issued in October. The selection panel included city staff, community representatives and golf/technical experts. “City Park Golf Course is one of the city’s most beloved and enjoyable golf courses,” said Happy Haynes, Executive Director of Denver Parks and Recreation.

“The talent and experience represented on these teams will ensure that City Park Golf Course continues to be one of Denver’s crown jewels for years to come.” A Request for Proposals (RFP) will be issued to the three teams in mid-January. The RFP will include guidelines and requirements that will drive the design of the course. In addition to input from the public, representa-

tives of the neighborhoods around City Park Golf Course and the golf community participated in an eight-month, collaborative process to develop and inform many of the design guidelines that will be in the RFP. A community open house about the RFP will be held in late January or early February. The course will remain open through the 2017 golf season. The city will select the design-build contractor in the Spring of 2017, with construction expected to begin in late 2017. The course will reopen in 2019. The redesign of City Park Golf Course is part of the city’s Platte to Park Hill: Stormwater Systems program. That program is taking a comprehensive approach to better protecting people and property north and east of downtown against flooding while improving water quality and enhancing public spaces. Mindful Golf: One Swing, one shot, and one thought at a time!

f all the hazards, fear is the worst! My favorite quote from one of the greatest golfers of all time, Sam Snead. Fear is what gets in the way of many of us moving forward and pushing through to be the best we can in golf and life. We see it countless times when we step on the course. Fear of hitting a bad shot, a high score, losing a tournament, hitting into the water and the list goes on. Fear drives most of our decisions and puts a tremendous amount of doubt in our minds. The problem with fear is it is in the future not the present moment. The what if not the what now? Golf is one of those sports where It is easy to slip into the mindset of what’s not happening and forget about the power of what is happening. Mindfulness is truly a buzz word today. But what does it really mean? Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment.

Mindfulness also involves acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them—without believing, for instance, that there’s a “right” or “wrong” way to think or feel in a given moment. When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we’re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future. What on earth does this have to do with golf? Part of the Yoga Fit FORE Golf program is

teaching my students the power of mindfulness on and off the golf course. It is easy to ignore what is happening in our bodies but really easy to get attached to the thoughts and emotions in our minds. Part of mindfulness, in golf, is that when we start to tune into our thoughts we will recognize patterns. These patterns are so engrained that they become automatic and habitual in a sense. Therefore, the same challenges continue to show up

round after round. We never get better and we continue down the same path of woulda, shoulda, coulda not the right now! When the wheels start to fall off, which they will, how do we put them back on? How do we let go of what we think should happen and tap into what is happening? We tap into the brain, the power of mindfulness. It is not about turning the mind OFF it is about tuning into what is happening with no judgement, no doubts, or fears of what is “right” or “wrong”. It is about complete acceptance in the moment. The shot that is being produced not the results. When we take our mind into the future we lose track of commitment to the present swing or shot type. Yoga Fit FORE Golf is a program designed to help you access the power of mindfulness and learn to focus more on one thought, one swing and one shot at a time. It is a three-part program. Pre-game, on-course and post-game. The mindfulness part is done on course. Prospect Recreation and Park District acquires Applewood Golf Course rospect Recreation and Park District (PRPD), in partnership with The Trust for Public Land, acquired the Applewood Golf Course in Golden, Colo. for $13.5 million from Molson Coors Brewing Company. The purchase is the result of more than a year and a half of planning and fundraising efforts by multiple partners to protect the unique tract of open space from residential development. On June 13, 2016, the Board of Trustees of Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) awarded PRPD, in partnership with The Trust for Public Land, $3 million in funding for the acquisition. The project was one of four to receive a grant in the first-ever round of GOCO’s Protect Initiative, which will invest $47 million over three years in once-in-a-lifetime conservation opportunities in rural and urban areas of Colorado. “The Applewood Golf Course project has been exceptional for many reasons, including the level of local community support and the amount of leveraging from multiple partners to make the property acquisition possible,” said Michele Frishman, open space program manager at GOCO. “Applewood’s current and future benefits to local recreation, including its potential to

Now in its fourth generation with more interior space, the 2016 has a more bold look and feel, and a whole list of new safety and tech features that are sure to please. There are two models of the RX. All versions now, not just the F Sport, are powered by a 295-horsepower, 3.5-liter direct-injection V-6 with a new 8-speed automatic transmission. The RX rides on MacPherson struts in front and a double wishbone setup in back, and it’s been tuned for better responsiveness without giving up any of the comfort in the ride. Jeep Wrangler maintains its classic throwback attitude from the old military utility vehicle days. Whether by chance or by design, this off-roader has maintained it’s look for decades and has become one of Jeep's best selling vehicles. Offered in Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and the extreme off-road Rubicon models, the Wrangler offers a throwback design with a good mix of modern amenities. Jeep preserved all sorts of details that you might not think could carry over to today’s market. The door hinges are still exposed, attached to flat sheet metal, and you can still completely remove its top and doors and flip down the windshield. All Wranglers are powered by Chrysler's 3.6-liter V-6, with a 6-speed

manual or an optional 5-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 and automatic make a smooth transition from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 7.7 seconds. The two door Wranglers are rated at 17 mpg city, 21 highway, 18 combined with either the manual or automatic. Move up to the larger Wrangler Unlimited and those ratings drop slightly. The 2017 Wrangler’s interior is still pretty basic, but considering where it can take you, I think it’s a fair compromise, and it can still be hosed down after a crazy day off road. Pricing is something to keep in mind. While the base price for the 2017 Wrangler is around $25,000, the loaded up Rubicon models can blow past $45,000.
