The only muni in the world to own a Nicklaus designed, 27-hole golf course he Town of Breckenridge, Colorado can boast that it is the only municipality in the world to own a Jack Nicklaus designed, 27-hole golf course. Breckenridge opened the Bear nine in 1985. The Bear was the first nine to grace the landscape known to Breckenridge's early day miners as Buffalo Flats. The miners certainly did not imagine golf in such an environment. What was once a tent city of miners seeking fortunes of gold, the landscape now is a challenging golf course with players seeking pars and birdies. The challenges for today’s golfer are quite similar to yesterday’s miners nothing comes easy. The second nine to open, in 1987, was the Beaver. A venture to the left of holes 6, 7, and 8 and you will notice rock piles; "tailings" as the miners called them, leftover from the days of gold mining in the area. The miners were not the only creatures to leave their mark on the topography. The Beaver nine takes its’ name from the beaver ponds that are scattered along holes 6, 8, and 9. Don’t blame Jack Nicklaus for this design work. The beavers created the habitat and Nicklaus left it in place for your
T
enjoyment. The success of the original 18 holes, prompted Town officials expand the facility. In 2001 the Elk nine opened giving golfer’s 27-holes to play. The Elk offers the most elevation change of the three nines, as well as the beautiful panoramic views of the Ten-Mile mountain range.
Playing at 9300+ feet in elevation, each nine offers a mountain golf experience. Panoramic views of the snowcapped Colorado Rockies can be seen on every hole. Dense wooded areas give way to open native grassland and wetland areas. It is not uncommon to spot wildlife during your round including beaver, deer, elk, moose
and sometimes even a bear. With the fantastic views and wildlife you realize a round at Breckenridge is more than just golf! Come see for yourself what make Breckenridge so special! For additional information about Breckenridge or to book a tee time visit www.Breckenridgegolfclub.com D

Eagle Ranch Golf Club and the Environment Since the course opened in 2001, one of the primary goals of Eagle Ranch Golf Club in Eagle, Colorado has been to actually improve the environment around them. Thanks to the hard work of their Superintendent, Derek Rose and his staff, they acquired the status of Certified Audubon Sanctuary in 2003 and have maintained this status since. To be a Certified Audubon Sanctuary, they complete a process to monitor and improve water quality, water conservation and provide wildlife habitat. Courses must renew their certification every two years. Each time they renew, a new project must be included, which further enhances the environmental contributions. In the past, Eagle Ranch has placed bluebird houses around the course, perches for birds of prey, reduced the area of irrigated grass and even started a couple beehives! “Everyone is looking forward to harvesting some more honey this year and, of course, we appreciate those bees buzzing around town pollenating as they go,” says Rose. “And we are very excited about the installation of solar panels on our Cart Barn Storage Facility and our Turfgrass Maintenance Facility this Spring,” he continued. Sunsense Solar performed their installation. Since the golf course is part of the Eagle Ranch Metropolitan District, they qualified for a 40% rebate from Holy Cross Energy for the cost of the system, which made the
Solar panels Beehives
project financially viable. With electric golf carts and maintenance carts, you can imagine that these buildings use quite a bit of power. It is estimated that the Cart Barn solar system will offset 65% of the electrical power usage and the Maintenance Facility solar system will offset close to 90%. Not only will these systems save the course thousands of dollars over the life of the system, but they will also help conserve electricity usage requirements from other limited natural resources. Of course, the most important goal of Eagle Ranch is to provide a beautiful and fun golf course with great staff and fun events and programs, but it’s good to know that they care about making the world around us better, too! Grant Olinger Beats Charles Chon in a Father’s Day playoff finish After the first day of play at the annual Denver City Amateur Championship, both the men’s and senior leaders came in under par at 69 and 67 respectively. Last year’s winners in both flights were looking to defend with Owen Ellis in a three-shot lead in the Senior Championship, and Adam Neville in a threeway tie for first shooting 69 for the Men’s Championship. In the Men’s Championship, the day started with a three-way tie between last year’s champion, Adam Nevill (Denver), Sam Marley (Centennial, and Grant Olinger (Arvada). The close race ended When Grant Olinger beat Charles Chon (Aurora) in a one hole playoff after tying with a two day total of136. Ryan Auxland (Aurora) received 3rd place with a 137 two-day total. In the Senior Men’s Championship, Owen Ellis (Boulder) didn’t have enough to hold on to his title shooting 73 today for a two-day total of 140. He fell to Brian Woody (Castle Pines) who fired a 68 today with a two-day total of 138 just edging out Ellis. To add to the excitement of the day,

Eagle Ranch Golf Club is located in the beautiful small town of Eagle, Colorado, just 30 minutes from Vail. Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course Joins Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program he Red Hawk Ridge Municipal Golf Course has received certification in Environmental Planning from the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP), an international program administered by Audubon International designed to help landowners preserve and enhance the environmental quality of their property. The plan was developed by Jon Holland, Golf Course Superintendent, who is also recognized for his effort to plan for environmental stewardship. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses provides an advisory service to help existing golf courses develop effective conservation and wildlife enhancement programs. This worldwide effort is coordinated by Audubon International and is sponsored in part by the United States Golf Association. "The open space of a golf course is utilized not only by golfers, but is habitat for a variety of wildlife species," explained Jim Sluiter, Staff Ecologist for Audubon International. "We welcome Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course’s commitment to the environment and to managing the golf course with wildlife in mind."
T
By joining and participating in the ACSP, Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course will be involved in projects that enhance habitat for wildlife and preserve natural resources
for the benefit of the local community. These projects may include: placing nesting boxes for cavity-nesting birds such as bluebirds and swallows, utilizing integrated

pest management techniques, conserving water, and maintaining food and cover for wildlife. "The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program benefits both people and wildlife," said Sluiter. "It's a great way for the managers of developed properties and environmental organizations to work together to become better stewards of land and natural resources." After the environmental plan is approved, properties in the program may apply for certification in Wildlife and Habitat Management, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, Water Quality Management, and Outreach and Education by demonstrating that they have met minimum requirements for each category. Audubon International is an environmental organization dedicated to educating, assisting, and inspiring millions of people from all walks of life to protect and sustain the land, water, wildlife, and natural resources around them. In addition to businesses, Audubon International also provides programs for golf courses, schools, communities, and new developments. For more information visit www.auduboninternational.org. D

was around this same time that Windham Thomas Wyndham-Quinn, the Fourth Earl of Dunraven, visited Estes Park for the first time. He arrived in Estes Valley in late 1872 on a hunting expedition after hearing of the sportsman's paradise in this mountain valley. Falling in love with the area, he returned in 1873 and 1874, and started purchasing—and some reports say swindling—his way into the ownership of
Estes Park. The next year, in 1875, Lord Dunraven built a rudimentary golf course of some sort, but little is known of its style or size. Lord Dunraven eventually started to lose interest in Estes Park, possibly because of the increasing number of tourists—sometimes as many as 200 in one summer. (A vast difference to the more than 4.5 million people that traveled into Rocky Mountain
National Park in 2016.) His last visit to the area was in the mid-1880s, and in 1906 he sold his 6,000 acres of Estes Park property to The Estes Park Investment Company. That group of investors is responsible for opening what is today the Estes Park 18Hole Golf Course. They started by building a clubhouse, which was completed in 1909 and is today where Smokin' Dave's BBQ at the Hangar Restaurant is located. The build-

ing was modeled after Lord Dunraven's Estes Park cottage. In 1917, Howard James, Homer James and Ed Andrews started construction of the golf course for the Estes Park Golf and Country Club. The course was completed later that year and the first game was played in 1918. Due to the U.S. economic crisis in the 1930s, the 18-hole course was converted to a 9-hole course and an airstrip was built on the western edge of the course with hopes to improve sagging tourism in the area. The airport did very little to promote travel to Estes Park and was a dangerous location that resulted in several bad crashes. It closed in the late 1940s. As finances at the golf course continued to stumble along, the decision was made to sell the leasing rights of the Estes Park Country Club to the Town of Estes Park. Since the value of this stock was so low, the country club stockholders turned over their stock to the Town of Estes Park. By the mid-1950s, the Town of Estes Park
was in full ownership of Lord Dunraven's golf legacy. The management of the course is now overseen by Estes Valley Recreation and Park District, but the property continues to be owned by the Town of Estes Park. In 2018, the Estes Park 18-Hole Golf Course will celebrate 100 years of operation in Estes Valley. Several upgrades have been made over the years, including the addition of an irrigation system in the 1970s, a remodel of the clubhouse deck, and a new fleet of gas-powered golf carts for the 2017 golf season. But the beautiful mountain views and the abundance of wildlife in Estes Valley that attracted Lord Dunraven more than 100 years ago remain the same. These features are still some of the best available to golfers wanting to play on one of Colorado’s oldest and most accessible mountain courses. Three Turns to Curb Your Slice
By Nathan Morris, PGA DIVOT Contributing Writer
ver the last 10 years and 18,000 lessons with GOLFTEC, I have learned that there are a few things that you have to do every time to get rid of that slice forever. There are three key moves that will set you up for success. Do these and TURN that slice into the perfect draw!
O
1 – TURN your grip. I see tons of students walk into my door with a grip that sets them up for failure. By turning your grip towards your trail shoulder, you give the club face a chance to be closed relative to the swing path. To do this, lay the club face down square on the ground. Rotate
your hands over towards your trail shoulder until the creases between your thumbs and index fingers BOTH point at your trail shoulder. 2 – TURN your shoulders. Because of the ball position and the fact that most golfers turn their chests toward the target when they look at it, most golfers set up with open shoulders. The is when your shoulder line points well left of your target for a right-handed golfer. This promotes an OUT to IN, or over the top swing path. This is exactly what we don’t want. Instead, LEAVE YOUR FEET SQUARE to the target and corkscrew your shoulders closed so that your shoulder line points a little right of the target. This will promote that INSIDE swing path that we all need to stop the slice.
3 – TURN your hips in the backswing. This one has been debated over the years so stick with me on this one. Allowing your hips to turn A LOT in the backswing is the only way that we can create a full shoulder turn and get our hands far enough behind us (right picture) to swing IN to OUT. If you have ever been told to keep your lower body stable or quiet (left picture) in the backswing you will have a hard time creating the proper upper body position unless you are built like Gumby. Us mere mortals have to let the hips turn because we aren’t that flexible. If you follow all three of these turns, that slice will TURN in to a draw in no time. If you are still having some issues, feel free to stop in and see your local GOLFTEC Coach for more help. D

Go Forward to Impact! By Scotty Hofer DIVOT Contributing Writer
ne of the major problems golfers have at impact is not being forward with either their weight or hands or both. At impact I like to see weight forward on the front leg with the upper body not “hanging back” and a forward leaning club shaft. Many golfers are trying to “lift” the golf ball into the air by letting the clubhead pass their hands too soon and/or having their weight moving away from the target instead of towards it. Many times I can watch a student’s chipping motion and be able to tell what is
O
Proper chipping setup
going to happen in their full swing. I love to teach chipping, because if a student can learn to setup properly, half the battle is already won. We get to preset our body and club in a good impact position and then try not to mess it up. See the image for a proper chipping setup: narrow open stance, ball positioned back in stance, sternum pointing in front of ball, weight slightly leaning forward (lower and upper body), hands at bottom of grip, hands positioned inside front thigh. From this setup position, all one has to do is move the shoulders, hands and arms together in the backswing and return them to the original setup position for a good impact. In the forward motion, allow the body to pivot slightly and support the swinging of the arms, hands and club.
Rear foot is pulled away from ball
Leaning away from the target at impact
aimpoint
(weight moving forward towards target and a forward leaning shaft) to your full swing. I suggest you try the “Annika move” to get the weight and body moving and rotating forward through the shot. Annika Sorenstam is one of the greatest women golfers, and it is my understanding that as a practice drill, she would let her head rotate early prior to impact to assist her in getting forward and fully rotating through impact. It worked so well that it became her signature move. The key to this move is to maintain your spine angle through impact and feel your body moving forward and continue rotating onto your front leg. See the picture below. For more information contact Scotty Hofer at 303-995-3329 or email him at shofer@metagolflc.com. D

The second image illustrates what I see all the time – a shaft leaning away from the target at impact and/or the body moving away from the target. To combat these two problems and feel a good impact, I have my students setup as shown in the third picture – rear foot is pulled away from ball and rests on the toe. This forces the weight to be on the front leg and makes it difficult for the student to move away from the target during the chipping motion. Try this practice drill and you will soon be hitting crisp chip shots. In the beginning, you will probably hit better shots from this setup. After some success, return your rear foot to its original position and duplicate the feeling. Alternate back and forth between the two setups. Now transfer that good chipping impact

Nice Drives Lexus IS 350
Lexus LX 570
exus' bold grille has been spread across its entire lineup over the past few years, which for some, does not work with traditional SUV styling. However you feel, hiding beneath it all is a very capable off-roader. Although it shares the same frame, powertrain, and basic suspension design as the Land Cruiser, there are considerable differences. The LX 570 makes use of an electro-hydraulic suspension that allows the vehicle to be lowered or raised at the flip of a switch. At its highest setting, the LX 570 sits up proud, and when it gets down low expect improved handling at higher speeds. The LX 570 boasts a 5.7-liter V-8, 383 horsepower and 403 pound-feet of torque. That power is delivered to all four wheels via a 8-speed automatic gearbox and a full-

time four-wheel drive transfer case. Those are pretty big numbers. When opening the door, immediately you notice the interior’s quality, decked in luxurious leather, glossy wood trim and a distinct dashboard. There's plenty of room for five adults and four golf bags so you’ll probably be the one driving to the course. For 2017, Lexus has made some important safety options standard: including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beam headlamps. All in all the LX 570s is downright luxurious, but an optional Luxury Package will bump it up to high-end territory. But then again, a loaded LX 570 is under $100,000, which is where you're just getting started in a Rangie. D
he Lexus IS 350 hasn’t had any major changes since its introduction in 2014, but the car is still very popular in the small luxury sedan market. For 2017, it gets a few exterior and interior tweaks before its major makeover in two years. So what’s new? The front end gets some grill styling, LED headlights, and air intakes, and the back end gets some different taillights and exhaust tips. The IS 350 comes with additional standard safety features, including forward collision warning and mitigation. A few minor cabin tweaks finish up the changes. The 2017 Lexus IS 350 AWD comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, two gears less than other models. Other standard equipment includes keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone climate
T
control, a sunroof, premium vinyl upholstery, a 10-speaker stereo system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The 2017 Lexus IS 350 has the upscale cabin you would expect from the luxury division of Toyota. Its design is standout in this segment. The IS 350 will technically seat five adults, but having three in the back will need to be for short trips. The 7.0inch infotainment screen contains the Lexus app suite and uses the mouse type controller for navigating the infotainment screen. The trunk provides more room than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and less than the BMW 3-Series but still plenty of room for two sets of clubs! D

Saying Goodbye to an Old Friend:
The Fitzsimons Story is Coming to an End... By Dennis Lyon, CGCS DIVOT Contributing Writer
t was recently announced by the Aurora Golf Division; the Fitzsimons Golf Course will close by the end of 2017. Aurora Golf has managed the 18-hole former army golf course since November 1998. The government determined Fitzsimons Army Hospital Post would be closed effective 1999. As a part of the hospital closing, the federal government made plans for disposal of the military property. The land not dedicated to the Colorado University Hospital Complex was to be developed by the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority (FRA). Aurora Golf was selected to manage the Fitzsimons Course by the FRA, starting in November 1998, until the property was developed. The life expectancy of the course, at that time, was projected at about 5 years.
I
HISTORY OF FITZSIMONS The Fitzsimons Army Hospital Post was named after Lt. William T. Fitzsimons, the first army medical officer killed in WWI. The medical facility opened in 1918 and was originally slated for use to treat tuberculosis and injured soldiers from WWI. Golf first appeared at Fitzsimons Medical Facility, as a 3-hole sand green course, most

likely in the early 1920’s. By the mid1930’s the Fitzsimons Facility had grown to the point an army 18-hole course was deemed necessary for the health and welfare of the staff and hospital patients. The New Deal, Civilian Construction Corps, was engaged to build Fitzsimons Golf Course, as designed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The course opened in 1939 for use by the military and their dependents. The Fitzsimons Golf Course design reflected the austerity of the time. The greens were mostly small and fairly flat. There was not a lot of grading worked into the design and the course had a minimal number of sand bunkers. However, as imperfect as the golf course was, it was adored by those who played it. President Ike Eisenhower, during his presidency, often made Denver his Summer White House, home of his wife Mamie’s parents. An avid golfer, Ike most often played Cherry Hills but was known to play Fitzsimons from time to time as seen in a local photograph. In September of 1955, President Eisenhower suffered a heart attack in Denver and recuperated at Fitzsi-

mons Army Hospital. Another interesting military connection with Fitzsimons was Orville Moody, whose nickname was “Sarge.” Orville Moody spent 14 years as an army sargent heading maintenance supervision of all army golf courses including Fitzsimons. There is a plaque in the golf shop at Fitzsimons which indicates Orville Moody set a course competitive record 63 in August 1958. He shot this score in the first round of the All Army Golf Tournament held at Fitzsimons. Moody went on to win the US Open in 1968, as the last Open Champion in the 20th century to win through local and regional qualifying. For the past 18 years, the course has played about 35,000 rounds per year and has been a great asset to the community. Fitzsimons may epitomize the best of public golf; affordable, fun and available to all regardless of status and ability. The only requirement was respect; respect for the game, the course and fellow golfers. THE FUTURE OF FITZSIMONS In 2016 a revised General Develop-
Arial Fitzsimons Golf Course ment Plan for the area including the golf course was approved by the City of Aurora. In conformance with the approved Development Plan, the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority has indicated a building and parking lot are planned for construction in the areas of the 1st and 18th holes in 2018. It is also assumed a major storm drainage project will soon follow, along with the development of future streets. With the closure of the Fitzsimons Golf Course in sight, the next several months may feel a lot like, a “last call for golf.” So why not head over to Fitzsimons, at the intersection of Montview and Peoria, and tee it up at least one more time. And after your round of golf, if you decide a cool one is in order at the clubhouse, why not lift a glass and pay tribute to General Ike, “The Sarge” and the thousands of military men and women who teed it up at Fitzsimons and experienced golf’s great game while serving their country. In closing let me say, “Fitzsimons, you will be missed. You were what you were, not great, but always there, and you were loved by many. Cheers.” D Dennis Lyon is a certified golf course superintendent and freelance golf writer. He retired as Manager of Golf for the City of Aurora after over 35 years in 2010.
