From speaking with customers, we knew they were looking for gripping tools with as delicate a touch as a human hand in order to automate handling procedures for sensitive objects of odd shapes or unusual surfaces.

Mr. Ryberg what was the trigger for the development of the piSOFTGRIP®? All stories have a beginning. The story of piSOFTGRIP®started with passion –Piab’s passion for innovation and for solving challenging problems through the development of automation products that make life easier for our customers. The vacuum-driven soft gripping tool piSOFTGRIP®is precisely such a product. We asked the Global Product Manager at Piab, Lennart Ryberg, what exactly triggeredand expeditedthe development of the piSOFTGRIP®.

The human hand has been at the centre of intense research and development within robotics since the field’s infancy. Huge efforts have been spent on making robotic hands that imitate the human hand, copying its dexterity and complexity. But with complexity comes great expense. Instead of trying to copy the human hand, Piab’s developers realised they had to come up with an affordable substitute that would work in real industrial settings. And as usual, they delivered! piSOFTGRIP®is a unique and cost-effective solution –a truly innovative gripping tool.”

How does the piSOFTGRIP® work? “The three-fingered gripper incorporates a vacuum cavity that enables the gripping force to be adjusted and controlled by the applied vacuum level. The first version – because all innovations have to start somewhere –can grip objects with a diameter of up to 50 mm.”

A GRIPPING STORY

3

Why did you initially choose this size?

difficult to handle objects.Hence, in the meantime, we have developed

“This proved to be the perfect size for showing off the fruits of their passionate labour –for their first demonstration Piab’s developers chose to grip a passionfruit! Unfortunately, passionfruit are not very colourful, sowe moved on to using lime, lemons, tomatoes interspersed by delicate bearings and test tubes of colourful content in filmed or live demonstrations.

further versions –a very small one for praline picking and a larger one with just two fingers to pick for example waffle cones and snack bars. And we are currently working on a further size to complete the product family.

Less colourful, but very fragile, unwrapped hollow chocolate eggs have also been used to demonstrate the virtues and versatility of piSOFTGRIP®. Made in detectable silicone approved for direct contact with food, the vacuum gripper can be used to automate the handling of not just seasonally festive chocolate eggs, but all sorts of fresh, unpackaged, and delicatefood items, without the risk of crushing.Further developments arebased on feedback received from customersas our demonstrations have sparked off conversations about what else the technology could be used for –if only it were available in different sizes! Some have expressed a desire to use it for picking the tiniest of fragile objects, whereas others are excited about the possibility to solve a need for getting a soft grip on larger

What was the feedback you have so far received from customers? “Enabling the automation of yetunautomated procedures, piSOFTGRIP®has generated a lot of interest at trade shows and among our customers. Much of the positive feedback stems from the fact that piSOFTGRIP® is a user-friendly and intuitive solution that is easy to control and install. It uses the same fittings as Piab’s piGRIP®suction cups, and an optional stainless-steelfitting offers wash-down provision to assist cleaning. In addition to its low cost,it is also lightweight, which means that when fitted to a robot arm it adds very little extra weight. Fitted to Piab’s end-ofarm vacuum tool piCOBOT®, the soft gripping piSOFTGRIP®offers the beginning of an entirely new chapter of automated manufacture.” Thank you Mr. Ryberg for this interesting insight into product development at Piab.n

piSOFTGRIP®

Handling sensitive objects with Piab’s unique vacuum based soft grippers Piab’s piSOFTGRIP® family grips sensitive and lightweight objects of odd geometries and / or unusual surfaces. Automating the packaging of delicate items like delicious pralines, cream filled cornets or hollow chocolate eggs becomes child’s play. Made in detectable silicone approved for direct contact with food, the vacuum gripper can be used to automate the handling all sorts of fresh, unpackaged and delicate food items, without the risk of crushing. • • •

DELHI HIGH COURT RESTRAINS A COMPANY FROM USING ‘AMUL’ ON ITS KITCHENWARE PRODUCTS

T

he Delhi High Court has restrained a company from using ‘Amul’ on its kitchenware products as it is deceptively similar to the trademark of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. The mark used by the defendant company is not registered and is being illegally shown as a registered mark. This is a clear case where grant of ad interim relief exists, it said and added that such representation also amounts to a fraud on the public. The suit said the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd is the registered holder of the well-known trademark ‘Amul’ used in milk and milk products.

The court issued summons to Maruti Metals on the suit filed by the milk marketing federation which alleged infringement by the defendant company by using its mark ‘Amul’ in context of kitchenware and utensils. The court said the word ‘Amul’ is distinctive and has no etymological meaning, and it is indelibly associated in the minds of the consuming public with the products of the plaintiff — Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. “Prima facie, any use of the word ‘Amul’ as a trademark by any other entity may tantamount to infringement,

BADSHAH MASALA PLANS TO ENTER READY-TO-EAT SEGMENT

B

adshah Masala is launched attempting to target the younger generation, while carrying the brand’s legacy forward and also portraying it as a generational product. Hemant Jhaveri is the managing director of Badshah Masala aims to educate and spread awareness among the younger generation about how they can conveniently cook their favourite dishes. However, the fact is that nowadays, the younger generation doesn’t have much time on their hands and is more inclined towards ready-to-eat options that provide a quick fix to hunger pangs. And, unlike 3-4 decades back, when Badshah Masala used to face direct competition only from the likes of MDH, Catch and Everest, nowadays, it also faces a tough fight from various RTE brands. The ready-to-eat segment is definitely on a rise, but it is not currently competing with the spice industry. Right now, the immediate target is to

increase sales and, once that is done Badshah masala will enter the readyto-eat segment. Badshah Masala is available on all major e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, BigBasket, Grofers, etc. It also sells masalas through its own website. Giving an insight of the brand’s online sales, Jhaveri informs, “The percentage of our online sales, when compared to offline, is low, but it is in the growing stage right now and we see it increasing drastically in future. Jhaveri says that the COVID pandemic, digital acceleration and increased importance of social media have made the brand increase its digital spends, which were almost negligible 3-4 years back. The immediate focus for Badshah Masala is to multiply its revenue, work towards its media strategy and make its presence felt in digital as well as print median

As an interim, the plaintiff sought direction to restrain the defendant, its officers, agents, dealers and others from advertising, promoting or in any other manner using or dealing

with the infringing mark ‘Amul’ or any other logos or word, which are identical or deceptively similar to the plaintiff’s ‘Amul’ trademarkn

FOOD SAFETY DEPTS TOLD NOT TO RENEW LICENCES ISSUED OFFLINE; GO ONLINE

T

he FSSAI has issued an order asking state food safety departments not to renew licences issued offline. Since the launch of Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) in November 2020, the food authority has been asking food businesses to get licences afresh through the online system of licensing and registration. The order reads, “It has been decided that the State Licensing and Registration Authorities shall stop renewal of offline issued licences with immediate effect and shall direct FBOs to file online applications for new Licence/Registration as per eligibility criteria through FoSCoS." The order added that Commissioners of Food Safety were requested to send confirmation regarding compliance of this order by August 31, 2021. The FSSAI has received several complaints about many Licensing Authorities renewing offline licences and registrations which have been issued earlier through offline mode.

FSSAI officials say that the challenge with offline licence renewal will be ‘maintainability of the records’. FSSAI in a statement explains that the offline renewals of Licence or Registration will lead to many challenges like no record for such offline renewed FSSAl Licences and Registration, which can be maintained online in FoSCoS. Also, such FBOs will not be able to file Annual Returns through FoSCoS, which is mandatory from FY 2020-21. FSSAI’s statement added that no online inspections including risk based and sampling can be done against offline issued licences. “Similarly, modules for online improvement notices and adjudication will not work for such licensees. No online record is possible for FSSAl initiatives via FoSCoS portal like Hygiene rating, Indian Food Laboratory Network (InFoLNet), Audit Management System (AMS), Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) etc. for such FBOs,” reads the statement.n

FOOD AND BEVERAGE MANUFACTURERS FACE SEVERE SCARCITY OF TIN CANS AND PEEL-OFF PACKAGING

M

anufacturers of food, beverages, paints, room fresheners and pharmaceuticals are facing severe scarcity of tin cans and peel-off packaging that is compelling them to delay or cut production. The packaging shortage is hitting chocolate and juice companies that are looking to incline production in expectation of higher demand during the forthcoming festive season. This follows a Bureau of India Standards (BIS) order effective last month. It orders use of BIS-certified and tin-free steel for cans, easy-open ends and peel-off ends for packaging. The certification requirement has created a shortage of raw material. The industry had been importing 90% of these materials since local production isn’t sufficient. And according to RS Sodhi, managing director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd, maker of Amul chocolates said,” there is a holdup effect in implementing the BIS certification by importers because of Covid-related supply constraints in recent months, and this is causing disruptions. India’s largest dairy brand sells some of its cheese, flavoured milk and infant foods in tin based cans and containers. The government had mandated BIS certification in July last year and given the industry until January 2021 to comply, extending this by six months. Also the international suppliers have been unable to get BIS certification because of Covid-related disruptions. Production Hampered, Or Even

Stalled Demand for tinplate and tin-free steel from the domestic industry is about 700,000 tons annually. Only two domestic companies manufacture the material. This is a problem waiting to accentuate further. Supply chain disruptions are brewing and will be further accelerated, especially for those with limited raw material bandwidth,” said FieldFresh Foods, which makes Del Monte juices and condiments. Most Del Monte juices are packaged in cans. Production is being hampered, or even stalled in some cases, with acute shortage for such tin-based packs for various categories, including juices, cheeses, paints and even some medicines that use tin peeloff,” said Metal Container Manufacturers Association (MCMA), which represents manufacturers of such packaging.

The BIS requirement is aimed at encouraging greater domestic production and reducing imports. Further Extension Denied “While we are supportive of the government’s inclination to rely more on Indian manufacturers and minimize imports, some more time would be beneficial for the industry to comply with the updated certifications,” Sodhi said. The industry had asked that the steel and steel products quality control order be pushed back until March next year, but the government rejected this. Industry executives said obtaining BIS certification involves complex procedures and international suppliers will not be able to get quickly approved. Tinplate steel, or a sheet of steel coated with tin, is used for packagingn

MITRASK FOOD TESTING OFFERS INSIGHTS TO GAIN FREEDOM FROM COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

M

itraSK Food Testing, is a leading integrated, food testing and quality enhancing organisation in India, serving the nation since last 80 years. This August, the company launches a consumer awareness social media campaign called Freedom from Common Misconceptions on Daily Food and Purchase, that aims to offer specific expert led details on 3 of the most common conditions when it comes to Indian households and family food purchase. Dr Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay, laboratory-in-charge at MitraSK Food Testing Services, explains topics covering 3 areas where consumers can reduce the harmful elements in the food and thus buy and eat healthier with some simple adjustments in daily lives and being more aware and free of health hazards.

These topics include – Is cooking oil reusable after one frying cycle? Even though fried food is so popular, very few people are aware of the harmful effects of reusing the oil used to fry food. In a common Indian household, it is also considered as an area of saving the oil consumption. While that is also important it should be reused beyond a certain way or time. Oil heated to high temperatures releases toxic fumes. Fumes are given off even before the smoke point is reached, but increases dramatically

waxes really safe? Whether the wax coats are safe to digest depends on the type of coating used. Most of the coatings involve morpholine that is tremendously harmful and can cause liver or kidney dysfunctions. Dr Mukhopadhyay said, “In India, natural waxes like Candelilla wax, Beeswax and carnauba wax are the only permissible food waxes on different fruits and vegetables. In order to determine whether the wax coating is made of natural or petroleum based waxes, the physical and chemical properties need to be known. All natural waxes have the esters group which are not present in petroleum waxes as they are made of alkanes of various carbons. This is tested using FT-IR Spectroscopy.” when the temperature goes above smoke point. Each time oil is heated, its fat molecules break down a little bit. This causes it to reach its “smoke point,” the temperature at which it literally starts to smoke and give off a bad odour, more quickly each time it is used. When this happens, unhealthy substances are released both into the air and into the food being cooked. Dr Mukhopadhyay said, “These substances are grouped under total polar compounds and their toxicity may cause lipid deposition, oxidative stress, hypertension, atherosclerosis. The Food Safety and Standards of India (FSSAI), has fixed the maximum limit of Total Polar

compounds at 25%. We at MSK ensure that the cooking oil adheres to the set codes of FSSAI.”

Fruits and veggies are coated with a layer of wax to preserve their shine. Is this wax coating harmful? Fruits and vegetables have a natural wax coating that retains moisture because they are composed of 80 to 95 percent water. However, for the purpose of packaging they are profusely washed and thus the coating wears off. Artificial waxes are then applied to replace the natural ones that wear off. This wax is applied on products to improve the appearance and increase shelf-life. But are these

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), permits only natural waxes on produce. Therefore, the FT-IR tested wax coatings applied on products are not considered harmful when ingested.

How to read labels on a food product and make the best buying decision? FSSAI has laid down labelling guidelines which every food manufacturer must follow the label must include name of food, list of ingredients, nutritional info, veg/ non veg, food additives, net quantity, health claim if any other points to note on a label are batch number, FSSAI license number, address and contact of manufacturer, country of origin.n

FOOD AUTOMATION & ROBOTICS FOR IMPROVED FOOD MANUFACTURING & PACKAGING

he systematic implementation and incorporation of automation and robotic systems will significantly enhance food manufacturing efficiency during unsustainable economic pressures. Food manufacturing has evolved as a vastly complex process, where it covers preparing, cooking, sorting, packaging, and palletising. To increase production at the facilities, industrial robots are widely adopted to save time, space, cleanliness, and safety. In the food manufacturing units, the robots are usually used in the process of dispensing, feed placement, cutting, packaging, or casing of food, pick-and-placing products into sorting and containers. The advanced developments in food robots result in the remote order of food for picking and sorting to save employees' energy by automatically filling that specific order. Considering the food items' packaging, where consistency, speed, or repetitive productions are concerned, the food robots win over humans in operational and production efficiency. Automation and robots are installed with great care, such as robots primarily equipped with intelligent vision systems, allowing them to take care of precise product placement on a sorting belt with the highest accuracy. These vision system robots can also be utilised to sort in terms of colour, shape, or size.

Need of Robots to Improve Individual Manufacturing Process The robots are incorporated in the food sector to initiate the manufacturing proactively and have a clear understanding of various units such as payload, speed, accuracy, and work envelope. To execute the process, the robots carry hold on various operations to meet cleanroom specification, such as robots include – • • • • • •

Dispensing Robots Pick & Place Robots Palletizing Robots Sorting Robots Order Selection Robots Clean Room Robots

There has also been further developed in the vacuum and grippers tools used in food robots. The airflow vacuum tool is ideal for handling goods with damageable surfaces because it can pick up products without touching them.

The suction cup is perfect for controlling many kinds of products, especially those with an uneven surface, such as biscuits and frozen pizzas. Using pressure difference, the vacuum gripper holds the product by using, which allows for fast pick up. Finger grippers are best used for products that cannot be handled by suction, such as cakes with loose particles on top. All gripper and suction tools should be easy to clean, change over, and made from materials suitable for the application.

Annual Supply of Industrial Food Robots Worldwide • • •

2016 – 8,000 2017 – 9,000 2018 – 12,000

Considering the food industry's robot applications, most of them are used for packaging and end-of-line product casing and palletisation. Therefore, this creates untapped potential in primary and secondary processing stages of food manufacturing, where primary processing includes operations on raw food (cleaning, inspecting, sorting, measuring, preparing, and transporting), and secondary processing consists of the processes needed to combine ingredients and produce food products, (cooking, blending, chilling, and assembling).

Covid-19 Impact on the Food Automation and Robotics The current automation trend has witnessed the new technology developments capable of providing end-to-end automation production of diversified processed foods. Reducing worker presence across the manufacturing process could help minimise potential rapid contamination and help companies reduce costs in terms of safety and other measures for personnel.

The food industry has emerged as an essential aspect in the current Covid-19 pandemic environment, which is primarily driven by various factors, including safety and hygiene, which have resulted in growing discussions concerning the element of automation across food manufacturing.

Robotics will Change the Food Industry 2021 During the pandemic outbreak, the robots introduce new ways to process and packaged food considering the highest food safety and sanitation level. Simultaneously, it also provides an opportunity for job delegations that are ergonomically difficult and harmful to human workers.

Food Manufacture Autonomous food production is the primary factor expected to address the current need for rising food consumption. In the next five years, the global food automation industry value is expected to be double by 2022 from 2019. The Asia-Pacific regional market will witness the most significant contributing driving factor in the world due to the growing popularity of ready-to-eat foods.

Food manufacturing has been segmented into two phases:

Primary Processing — Initial, the procurement of raw food products are cleaned, sorted, blended, and transported. Robotic applications include slaughtering and sorting. Secondary Processing — Later, the ingredients are mixed to form new food products by cooking, baking, chilling, and others. Robotic applications include product sorting, mixing, and defect removal.

Robotic applications are most suitable for secondary processing, as the food is more standardised by then. However, it is expected to witness a tremendous demand for robotics in primary processing.

Food Packaging Currently, food packaging robots have been incorporated into the entire food supply chain. However, the latest development makes it possible to automate the packaging process as a whole. Food packaging has been segmented into three phases: •

Primary Packaging — Individual foods are packaged. For instance, a pick-and-place robot puts sweets into plastic tubs. Secondary Packaging —

Food And Beverage Matrix | September 2021

Individual packages are gathered together to finalize the shipping of the final products. For instance, another pick-and-place robot stacks those plastic tubs into a larger box. Tertiary Packaging — Secondary packages are gathered together for shipping. For instance, a palletizing robot puts many boxes onto a pallet.

It seems possible that robotic packaging will highlight as one of the leading applications in the food industry.

Food Safety Although the interest in automation and robot technology is partly driven by labour costs and the availability of skilled laborers, more companies focus on food safety and hygiene. The rising awareness for the clean and non-contaminating manufacturing areas and the increasing demand for food products in the global market will significantly enhance the demand and consumption of automation and robots across the food supply chain.

increases the focus of the food companies to follow these two major megatrends, FSMA, and processing. Companies are simultaneously trying to resolve both, in which automation and robotics can lend a hand to them.

Food Delivery Recently, robotic food delivery is in the limelight across the globe. In 2020, Domino’s Pizza declared that it would

21 incorporate autonomous ground vehicles for food delivery after their initial successful drone delivery in late 2019. Although autonomous food supply may sound similar to ‘the latest fad', this meets a growing market trend. Over the last few years, home-grown ready-to-eat food and demand for restaurant-quality, has grown enormously. It is doubtful whether or not autonomous delivery will become widespread, but the food

industry's taste changes. Therefore, the food industry trends and outbreak of Covid-19 has definitely changed the supply chain and create awareness for food safety and hygiene, which is further estimated to make the opportunistic scope for automation and robotics in the global market in the coming two years.n

Manufacturer Of Food Product Labels, Shrink Labels & Pouches (In Roll Form)

According to the CDC, an estimated 48 million Americans (1 in 6) are sick, where around 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die each year due to foodborne disease. Robots tested successfully reduce the contamination risk that can increase the foodborne disease cases, limiting the human and food processing contact. The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) has further restricted and imposed strict regulations on processors and packagers regarding their sanitary requirements. This

SNACKING INDUSTRY BOOMING DURING THE TIMES OF E-COMMERCE

t’s a very interesting time we are living in, when our choices are witnessing variety of options. The movement of our attention towards the availability of so many products online for snacking has evoked a desire to first understand the variety with their beautiful creatives, verbalised purpose and crisp content. While the snacking industry has prevailed its menace on the consumer through the traditional model of pick and buy, customers have now matured towards choosing the options carefully based on one’s own choices. As a nation now choices are not driven by the head who used to have his own habitual way of procuring the snacks available to its nearby market, is migrating towards more individual choices within the household with its multiple members of diverse age group ,which is now possible through technology. E-commerce has made possible that the snacking consumers can now choose from what they want across categories based on their taste, aroma, intuitive hunger and fulfilment of particular desire (weight loss, stress relief, protein intake). Since the concept of guests is currently suspended on ground of Covid the choices are more towards options which fulfil the need of snacking with some value delivered on a personal satisfaction. The whole concept of snacking has emerged again with an understanding that it should be healthy and complete with a good beverage.n

Dragées Collection The decadent Dragées Collection is a celebration of luxurious nuts coated with smooth, silky chocolate. A mélange of classic and innovative flavours, these bite-sized treats are hard to resist. Whether it’s the slow

CONTINUOUSLY OPERATING PLOUGHSHARE MIXER

ödige Process Technology developed a process engineering solution for the production of monocalcium phosphate (MCP). The powder, which is an essential component of feed and phosphate fertilizers, can thus be produced economically in an “all-in-one” process. Monocalcium phosphate (MCP) is formed by the reaction of pure phosphoric acid and calcium carbonate. Powerful process technology is just as important to the production of high-quality MCP as the quality of the raw materials used. Lödige offers a solution that is specially designed for this application, based on a type KM Ploughshare Mixer for continuous operation.

Ploughshare Mixer With Application-Specific Design The Ploughshare Mixer for continuous operation uses the mechanically generated fluid bed system that was introduced to mixing technology by Lödige: Ploughshare shovels in their basic shape patented by Lödige in 1949 rotate close to the walls of a

the high mechanical and corrosive stress caused by contact with the mixture.

Production Process

horizontal, cylindrical drum. The circumference speed and geometric shape of these plough-like mixing tools are designed so that they pick up the raw materials for the mixture completely and throw them into the free mixing compartment. During this process, the material is lifted off the drum wall against the centrifugal force. This generates a mechanical fluid bed, in which the entire product mixture is constantly gripped, resulting in extremely thorough mixing, even with high mixture throughput and short retention times. The mixing elements are shaped to

ensure product transport. Additional choppers in the mixing drum break up agglomerated material and permit systematic granulation during the mixing process. The result is a continuous “all-inone” process. This means all process phases of MCP production can be performed in a single machine. Other units and process steps are no longer necessary. Moreover, the mixer offers great stability and minimized cleaning intervals. A special wear protection shields mixing tools and shovel arms against

The MCP production process has three phases: mixing – reaction – granulation. In the first step, the two base materials, phosphoric acid and calcium carbonate, are mixed to form a highly homogeneous substance. In the second phase of the process, an exothermic reaction is produced under defined conditions, resulting in a conversion of the base materials into monocalcium phosphate. This is followed by granulation in phase 3. The granulate properties can be adapted specifically to the customer’s requirements. The final process step, granulation, offers a variety of advantages over ungranulated MCP: It improves the pourability of the substance and makes transport and storage easier. It allows the product to be packaged dust-free and permits perfect dosing. A variety of different machine sizes is available for throughput rates in a range from 1t/h to 50t/hn

MINISTERS COMMIT TO PROTECT UPL WINS NATIONAL IP AWARD 2020 & WIPO IP ENTERPRISES TROPHY FOOD SYSTEMS, LAUNCH FOOD FOR AGRI SUSTAINABILITY SECURITY ROADMAP

A

griculture and food ministers from the 21 APEC member economies, reaffirmed their commitment to an open, transparent, productive, sustainable and resilient APEC food system by launching a new 10-year food security roadmap. Nearly 2.37 billion people lacked access to adequate food in 2020, a rise of 320 million in just one year, according to a World Bank policy brief. A report by the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC) found that the number of people facing acute food insecurity who need urgent life and livelihoodsaving assistance hit a five-year high in 2020. Against this backdrop, APEC ministers convened at their annual APEC Ministerial Meeting on Food Security on Thursday, chaired by New Zealand Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor, and adopted the APEC Food Security Roadmap Towards 2030. The roadmap details goals and key action areas where APEC is well placed to help ensure people always have access to sufficient, safe, affordable and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Damien O’Connor said, “While food security was already a challenge, Covid-19 showed us that there are vulnerabilities in our food systems and in our economies, and that our food systems need improvement— especially to deliver on the APEC 2040 vision of an open, dynamic, peaceful and resilient region.” The roadmap, aligned with New Zealand’s APEC 2021 priorities as well as the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040, incorporates four key areas of focus: •

Digitalisation and innovation: using digital levers to drive food sustainability.

Productivity: prioritising systems that are fit for purpose.

Inclusivity: ensuring that underrepresented groups are set up to thrive.

Sustainability: tackling climate change and environmental challenges.

and companies in the field of patents, designs, trademarks and geographical indications.

Philip Houlding, chair of the APEC Policy Partnership on Food Security, said, “Besides our effort to address the challenges of food security, the roadmap also emphasizes efforts in increasing productivity and efficiency, minimizing food waste, mitigating and adapting to climate change as well as reducing costs and facilitating food trade.”

Rajnikant Shroff, chairman and managing director, UPL India, said, “We are proud to put farmers’ needs first and create products and services around their requirements. Our relentless focus on innovation has helped us to launch new products every year. UPL holds over 1,400 granted patents and has about 2,900 pending applications for inventions that satisfy farmers’ needs across geographies.”

The group spearheaded the development of the roadmap and drives public-private sector engagement on all aspects of food security in the region. At the virtual meeting, APEC Ministers heard from Qu Dongyu, director-general of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), on closing the digital divide, especially in rural areas, and how this can help address some challenges faced by small-scale food producers. Ministers acknowledged the benefits of digitalization and discussed measures to promote innovation and improve the use of digital technology to ensure food security as the region recovers from Covid-19. “The pandemic accelerated digital transformation and highlighted the abilities of an innovative digitally enabled economy to better recover and thrive. But effective recovery also requires all elements of government to work together to deliver this transformation and enhance food security in the APEC region,” said O’Connor. Ministers also highlighted the central role of the private sector throughout the food value chain with respect to production and processing, distribution, trade and investment. Ministers encouraged deeper collaboration between policymakers and the private sector to ensure an innovative, refreshed food system to meet the food security challenges of the future. “Without food security for all our people, we cannot achieve the other goals we have for our economies,” O’Connor concludedn
