India'sagrochemicals market is projected to grow at a rate of 8.5% between 2022 to 2027 and become a $7.4 billion market by 2026. Before the pandemic, China was one of the largest producers of agrochemicals in the world. The supply chain suffered due to the import restrictions that Covid-19 brought about in its wake. However, now that such restrictions are being lifted, the agrochemicals sector is projected to witness an upward trendworldwide. A dire need agrochemicalsforamid climate change

AGROCHEMICALS TO REDEFINE AGRICULTURAL MARKET IN FUTURE

The agricultural sector has faced the most brutal effects of climate change. In the bigger picture, crops have suffered due to sudden changes in climate and natural disasters. Climate change has made pests hungrier, which worsens the effects of pest infestations and causes diseases in crops. This has led to more and more farmers turning towards agrochemicals to seek refuge and keep their yields growing at a stable rate. As these critical challenges prevail, growth statistics for the agrochemical market make a case for expansion. Government support drives demand for agrochemicals Recently, the Indian Government included agrochemicals to the list of 12 champion sectors, wherein India has a great potential to cater to the global supply chains. This has led to greater collaboration with private sector companies, which are providing innovative raw products at a cheaper price. Due to the rise in awareness among farmers, the coming of the internet and aggressive awareness programmes by Government, more farmers are becoming conducive to adopting agrochemicals for securing their yields. The increased availability of institutional credit offered by Government for agricultural inputs has also helped the market in a jubilant manner. As the agricultural sector grows, farmers now have better and speedier access to buying agrochemicals, which are a massive driver of change. The way ahead The world is waking up to the importance of agrochemicals. A UN estimate tells us that the global population is supposed to reach 9.8 billion by the year 2050, and 11 billion by 2100. Additionally, there are concerns of threats by climate change and diminishing land area for farming. Given these factors, agrochemicals make for a practical and hands-on approach to quality farming. Since 2009-10, there has been a massive increase in per hectare use of agrochemicals in India, and the efforts to make them a priority in terms of strengthening production have just started. All signs point toward agrochemicals becoming an even more significant role player in an industrial world, which will make agriculture a technically advanced domain, without farmers having to risk their yields on sheer luck.n

The pandemicindustryglobalagrochemicalpicksuppost-

The agrochemical sector is all set to make a comeback after the Covid-19 pandemic halted its growth in the last two years. By 2030, the market size is expected to grow to $280 billion, at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 2.8% from 2022. It might be surprising to know that even though Asia-Pacific is the largest market for agrochemicals in the world, accounting for 27% share in 2020, North America is also supposed to be the fastest-growing one.

It is not easy for farmers to feed over 7 billion people every day for 365 days a year. That's how hard the agricultural industry and its supporting arm — the agrochemicals industry — have to work each day. There are two major challenges to it;growing population numbers and rampant pest infestations. Additionally, the quality of land available for farming, both in terms of value and size, has also gone down. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that pest infestations destroy up to 40% of crop production every year, leading to a loss of about $290 billion across the globe. Agrochemicals can prove to be a blanket solution to both these challenges, by revitalising land fertility to meet increasing demands, while at the same time saving the crops from the threat of pests and infections. According to a Government estimate, pest and insect problems in India are so sizable that about 35% of crop yields are eaten away by them. Amid such a troublesome scenario, the agrochemical industry has to perform in parallel to the agriculture industry to allay its most pressing concerns today.

T he agrochemical industry is poised to boom, given the recent rise in awareness amongst farmers about improving their yields exponentially. With aggressive awareness campaigns by Government and stakeholders, farmers today are more conducive to adopting agrochemicals to support bigger and quality yields.

PASSENGERS WITH FOOD ORDERING AND DELIVERY ON TRAIN JOURNEYS

Powered by Haptik’s conversational commerce capabilities, the WhatsAppbased self-service food delivery platform allows passengers to place food orders and get their deliveries straight to their seats with real-time order tracking, feedback, and support. Travelers can simply use their PNR numbers to order food at selected restaurants at planned train stops.

Aakrit Vaish, cofounder and chief executive of Haptik, said, “WhatsApp is the favourite mode of communication now. So we thought, instead of having to download yet another app, if passengers could ping a number on WhatsApp and place an order, it would make things faster.

“The Middle East and Africa also show similar trends when it comes to WhatsApp solutions,” Vaish added. n

The WhatsApp solutions unit for Haptik drives 40% of the firm’s total revenues currently, and Vaish expects it to sustain the momentum in the future given the fast adoption of WhatsApp as a communication platform by users and businesses. The firm is expanding its use cases with WhatsApp as an interface. It is currently working with retailers and hospitals to enable end-to-end buying and consultation/appointment setting respectively. Haptik recently expanded to four countries in Southeast Asia— Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines—where it is seeing similar traction for WhatsApp-led AI and conversational commerce solutions.

Haptik helps brands acquire, convert, and engage users with AI-driven, personalized, conversational experiences across 20 channels and 100+ languages. Zoop India offers food ordering on train services and is approved by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) as a national food aggregator under the e-catering project.

We’re excited to see how people respond to this Accordinginnovation. to Vaish, since its launch on WhatsApp, the service has processed over 20,000 orders. “Right now, travellers need to place the order a day in advance, but we are working on real-time ordering as well,” he said. (Real-time ordering may still entail having to order an hour or so in advance, depending on the route, destination, and Theorder.)feature allows digital payments across services like UPI, net banking, etc. Since WhatsApp Payments is not yet enabled for businesses, the payment interface is outside the WhatsApp ecosystem.

EXPORTS AT RISK TO GLOBAL SUPPLY

I ndia accounts for 40% of global rice trade, and restricting exports will deal a further blow to countries grappling with a cost-of-living crisis and worsening hunger. It will have implications for the billions of people that depend on the staple, with about 90% of the world’s rice grown and consumed in Asia. Unlike wheat and corn prices, which surged after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, rice has been subdued due to ample stockpiles, warding off a bigger food crisis. Back in 2008, prices soared above $1,000 a ton, more than double the level now, as India and Vietnam banned exports, causing panic over supplies. Broken rice is mainly used for animal feed or to produce ethanol in India. Prices have jumped this year on increased export demand. Top buyers include China, which uses it mostly for livestock feed, and some African countries, which import the grain for food. Shares of Indian rice producers and exporters tumbled on expectations of the curbs. KRBL Ltd, one of the biggest shippers, sank as much as 8.8%. LT Foods Ltd declined about 7.5%, while Chaman Lal Setia Exports Ltd fell 3%. India has already restricted wheat and sugar exports, sending shock waves through global markets as it signalled an escalation in food protectionism that’s seen countries choke off flows of locally-grown supplies to the world. That helped to send world prices for kitchen staples to fresh records, although they have declined recently as the outlook for global crops improved. The potential curbs on rice come as planting has shrunk 8% this season due to a lack of rainfall in some areas. Monsoon showers have been about 40% less than average in the major growing states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Overall, the country has received 9% above normal precipitation during the period.n

Beverages can be defined as 'any fluid which is consumed by drinking'. Beverages are an integral part of human diet. The cycle starts with the infant formulas- highly complex drink, rich in many key nutrients. As humans age and their nutritional requirements change, new products are designed which suit the consumers. It consists of diverse group of food products, usually liquids that include the most essential drink ‘water’ to wide range of commercially available fluids like fruit beverage, synthetic drinks, alcoholic beverage, milk, dairy beverages, tea, coffee, chocolate drinks. Despite differences in their properties one common feature that exists in all beverages is their ability to act as thirst quencher. Beverages are rarely consumed for their food value but are vital for life. Although their prime role is to fulfill the human need but these are part of our culture. However there are important pre-requisite for beverages:• All are made from food ingredients

• Consumed in enormous quantities – sometimes safer than potable supply Beverages may be classified in various ways. The classification criteria may depend on various factors as mentioned below:

• Natural and Synthetic (Ingredients used in manufacture)

• Alcoholic and Non-alcoholic (presence or absence of alcohol)

• Carbonated and Non-carbonated (Degree of mechanical carbonation)

• Stimulating and Non-stimulating (Based on physiological effect). Non-alcoholic beverages comprise all beverages that are alcohol-free and include a wide range of subsectors, such as carbonated soft drinks (CSDs), fruits and vegetable juices, tea/coffee/milk based beverages, sports drinks, energy drinks and bottled water. The sector has witnessed continuous double-digit growth in the post-liberalisation period with the entry of a number of foreign and domestic corporates in manufacturing, and the proliferation of products and brands. The sector has significant forward and backward linkages and connects the entire agriculture value chain— from farmers to consumers. This report examines the contribution of the sector to India’s economy in terms of its contribution to the GDP (gross domestic product), manufacturing sector, employment, FDI (foreign direct investment) inflows, technology transfer, exports and development of the agriculture value chain. It analyses the barriers faced by the sector and suggests policy measures to enhance the global competitiveness of Indian industry, generate employment, facilitate exports and inflows of FDI, develop India as an agro-processing hub and link it to the global production

The non-alcoholic beverages industry is comprised of companies involved in the production and sales of drinking products not containing alcohol. The breadth of this segment spans from bottled water, to coffee and tea, to soft drinks, juices and other products.

Bottled water and carbonated soft drinks still account for the bulk of the non-alcoholic beverages sector, the market for juices, energy drinks, tea, milk and coffee-based beverages and organic drinks is expanding.

Some of the biggest trends in the industry follow the general trend in consumer goods products of an increased focus on health and wellness. In the non-alcoholic beverages sector this has expressed itself through functional beverages and fermented beverages. Both types of products aim to provide some benefits to the consumer beyond simple thirst quenching or flavour. In the case of functional water, additional nutrients or naturally occurring chemicals are added to the water, while fermented products like kombucha market the naturally occurring health benefits of the product, often digestive health. Carbonated drinks are known by various names world over like soda, sparkling, and also as ‘thanda’ in India. All the carbonated drinks come with a fizz that is produced by the carbon dioxide gas that is pressurised into the water. Other than the effervescent water, carbonated drinks or soda primarily contain ingredients like sweetener (artificial or natural), a synthetic taste enhancer like caffeine and a flavouring agent, in a combination of one or more. The sweetener may be a sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or a sugar substitute in the case of diet drinks. A soft drink, mainly in cola category may also contain caffeine. Widely sold soft drink flavours are cola, lemon-lime, root beer, orange, grape vanilla, ginger ale, fruit punch and sparkling lemonade.

The non-alcoholic beverages segment faces complex consumer demands for nutritious and energy rich fresh products with supplemental ingredients. The functional ingredients present in these beverages could be physiologically active also, within the frame work of regulatory bodies. Juices, tea, coffee, milk, syrups, punches, water, offer us refreshment, quenching of thirst and richness of taste with varieties of flavours. The latter part has contributed to the reasons why these beverages are universally enjoyed by people of all ages, irrespective of age, gender or class. These beverages offer different levels of physiologically active ingredients and hence, due care must be given on their regular intake in high Similarlyquantities. the safety aspects of these juices including the herbals should be seriously dealt with. The latest trends revealed that many companies were trying to enlarge or diversify their product portfolio in the direction of healthier options. This is mainly due to the high sugar contents in the sweet beverages. Hence, the choice was towards the bottled drinking water. The bottled water market is growing at a rapid rate of around 20% a year in lndia, whereas, the branded fruit juices segment is growing at around 11% annually.n

Application of Drones in Agriculture and Farming Soil and Field Analysis Drones are great tools to access insightful data for the quality of the soil at the beginning or end of a crop cycle. AI drones equipped with LiDAR can be used to create 3D maps of the soil to be able to understand any issues with the quality of the soil including the nutrients or any dead zone.

Geofencing Drones equipped with infrared cameras can quickly identify people or animals. Therefore, drones can protect the fields from external animal damage, especially at night.

• Security- Drones are flown by trained drone pilots. Therefore, there is no possibility of misuse.

Monitor growth Drones can deliver precise information on every stage of crop growth and can alert farmers to any differences before they turn into a disaster. Additionally, multispectral imaging can accurately reveal minute distinctions between healthy and ill crops that the naked eye can overlook. For instance, stressed crops will reflect less nearinfrared light compared to healthy crops. The human eye may not always be able to see this distinction. But in the early stages, drones can supply this information.

• High efficiency- Drones operate instantly and can do tasks twice as quickly as humans.

• Water astechniques,ofsprayingdronesconservation-Agriculturaluseultra-lowvolumetechnologyinplaceconventionalsprayingsavingmorewateraresult.

Irrigation Monitoring Today, drones equipped with thermal imaging systems are effectively used to monitor the entire irrigation network efficiently and spot any issues in real-time. With access to real-time information through drones, farmers are in a better position to maximize the drainage and prepare contingency plans to cope with issues.

Seed Planting Seed planting using drone technology is a relatively new technology as compared to other drones applications in agriculture. However, startup companies have been testing the technology for faster and more effective seed plantations.

Benefits of agri-drones

A griculture is one of the most crucial elements for the sustainability of human civilization. It has been forecast that agricultural consumption would increase by 69% from 2010 to 2050 due to increase in population. The current technological trends in agricultural practices are not suitable for small land holdings that are a norm in developing countries. As such, meeting future food demands seems like an uphill task for such countries. To stay sustainable, maximize productivity and optimize land spaces, the concepts of advanced farming techniques need to be explored and integrated into agriculture. One such concept is drones with datagathering equipment for agriculture which is now known as precision India’sagriculture.economy is mainly based on agriculture. For the majority of rural households, agriculture continues to be their primary source of income. The agricultural products that make up a sizable share of India’s exports also significantly impact the country’s economy. Agriculture is still far behind in technological development, despite the industry’s growing importance. The leading causes of this situation have been crop loss brought on by unfavourable weather and unchecked pest problems. Additionally, Indian farmers still rely on the monsoon rains for irrigation and employ traditional techniques for other aspects of farming. Due of this, despite farmers’ tireless efforts, the quality and quantity of agricultural produce are occasionally impaired. How drones can be used? In precision agriculture, drones have a range of uses from soil and crop field analysis to planting and pesticide spraying. Drones can be used with different imaging technologies like hyper spectral, multispectral, thermal that can provide the farmers with time and site-specific information regarding crop health, fungal infections, and growth bottlenecks. Drones can also identify drier regions in a field and measures can then be taken to irrigate such regions with better techniques. Precision agriculture provides farmers with such concrete information that enables them to take informed decisions and utilize their resources more efficiently.

• Connectivity issue- Online availability is frequently nonexistent in rural places. In such cases, a farmer must make an investment in internet connectivity, which can turn into an on-going expense.

Limitations of Agri drones

• Weather dependent- The right weather is crucial for drone operations. Drone flight is not advised while it is raining or windy outside.

• Knowledge and Skill- Utilising new technology is a welcome shift, but doing so regularly calls for the appropriate skill set and knowledge. The typical farmer could find it difficult to comprehend how a drone works. He must either gain the knowledge or continue to rely on an expert.n

eXtended Transport System increases flexibility in food packaging Amid rapid change in the food and beverage industries accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer packaged goods (CPG) manufacturers, contract packagers and their suppliers have to dramatically increase their agility to meet an exponential surge in demand. This prompted U.S. OEM Brenton to equip their side load case packer machine with the XTS. Now, the linear transport system enhances flexibility in product infeed and makes changeovers faster. In addition, the machine offers a significantly reduced footprint after the redesign.

the eXtended Transport System (XTS) from Beckhoff, which we found could adapt to these product changes on the fly,” Grinager said. “Using XTS, we developed a pitch-less M2000 machine that expertly handles a completely random infeed timing of all pizza shapes, orientations and product variants, including display-ready and bulk packaging.” The upgraded M2000 machine now features 5.5 meters of XTS track with 12 movers to control the product infeed. A true mechatronic solution, XTS offers linear motor characteristics combined with constantly cycling movers on a path available in open or closed versions and the most diverse geometries. As one of many remarkable features, the movers are able to create clamping forces in motion: Two synchronized movers working in tandem grip the pizza stacks contained in buckets with a predefined force and stabilize them for fast and secure transport to case packaging steps. “That’s the beauty of this machine – it takes a stack of 15 shrink-wrapped circular pizzas and can quickly adapt to an infeed of pizzas already in square packaging – all with minimal changeover time,” Mike Grinager said. XTS also effortlessly compensates for different infeed timing in the feed because the movers can take up any distance and buffer product in front of the load station to give XTS is at the core of the M2000 packaging machine from Brenton, pictured above: A series of buckets holds pizzas as XTS takes them around a 180-degree corner to grip and stabilize stacks.

Using XTS, Brenton developed a pitch-less machine that handles completely random infeed timing of all frozen pizza shapes, orientations and SKUs.

PIZZA CASE PACKER WITH XTS REPLACES THREE MACHINES AND CONVENTIONAL PRODUCT TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGY

A major U.S. contract packager enlisted Brenton to take on a challenging case packing application for frozen pizzas. This fast-paced facility required machinery that could handle random timing infeeds as well as 26 different frozen pizza SKUs that were either boxed or simply shrink wrapped in plastic. “This application presented a challenge as we had to eliminate change-out flights for different sized products. Switching from 10-inch to 15-inch pizzas required time-consuming mechanical adjustments,” Mike Grinager, Vice President of Technology for Brenton, explained. “We also had to deliver a high throughput of 15 cases per minute without product damage. This is complicated by the fact that pizzas are stacked as many as 15 high in variable orientations while they speed down the packaging line.”

Brenton eventually decided that these demands necessitated a mechatronic linear transport system for the company’s popular M2000 intermittent motion, side load case packer machine.

Intelligent transport technology handles product variance

XTS greatly reduces jams and downtime as it moves perfectly stacked pizzas into cartons, according to the packaging specialists at Brenton.

Therefore, Brenton integrated a GFX guidance system from HepcoMotion specially adapted to the XTS, which can accommodate higher Thepayloads.XTS

Substantially increased machine throughput

Since then, Brenton has already received a third order from the contract packaging company and there are quotes from other customers for additional machines with XTS. In addition to supporting well-established packaging markets for Brenton, XTS is opening up many new project types for the OEM, particularly in pharmaceutical applications where they see even more potential to expand market share. “XTS supports many new machine designs for projects that we might have passed on previously,” Grinager said. “We now have in our reach new concepts that are faster, more flexible and can reduce machine footprint by as much as 50%. Following our initial XTS successes, Brenton is also researching XTS Hygienic for washdown applications in food manufacturing and the XPlanar flying motion system for the most challenging material handling requirements in the industry.” n

| September 2022 53Food And Beverage Matrix OEM Brenton saved at least 200 hours of engineering time for the infeed section of the M2000 and removed about 100 mechanical parts.

Brenton has experienced impressive throughput from the XTS-equipped M2000 machine. The M2000 is now able to carton as many as 41 different SKUs and up to 27 cases per minute, which equals 140 frozen pizzas per minute. The machine can also implement up to 26 different pack patterns, including more complex, display ready and commercial patterns at a throughput of 12.5 cases a minute. “One XTS-equipped M2000 machine can actually do the work of three conventional case packing machines,” Mike Grinager said. After eliminating many of the change-out steps, Brenton reduced the typical downtime required for remaining infeed changeovers from around 30 minutes down to just five minutes with XTS. Brenton saved at least 200 hours of engineering time for the infeed section of the M2000 and dramatically reduced complexity by being able to remove about 100 parts from the infeed, such as chains, flights, pushers and rotation mechanisms.

Industrial PC. The machine controller connects to a CP2915 15-inch Control Panel display with multi-touch capability. Despite the highly dynamic motion control involved, the XTS only utilizes about 15% of the IPC’s computing power, leaving ample reserves for other automation functionality. Later iterations of the Brenton M2000 also include high-speed EtherCAT I/O systems with a variety of EL series terminals, including 8-channel high-density (HD) variants. “Interoperability between the EtherCAT I/O system from Beckhoff and other fieldbuses is very helpful because it simplifies integration,” Mike Grinager said. “Establishing connectivity with EtherNet/ IP devices was also easy for the Brenton Engineering team,” added Patrick Triemert, Application Engineer at Beckhoff USA. “However, with its extremely high-speed and synchronization, EtherCAT is the perfect bus for mechatronic applications like XTS.”

The cold chain was a major issue in our country and many other places. The company had been able to build their retail network over 24 months and was now present in 42 cities across India. The challenges they faced in their retail business included partners who were not well equipped to handle frozen products. They, as manufacturers, needed to make a durable product because a consumer wouldn’t blame the retailer for a bad product, he would blame the brand. A lot of R&D went into manufacturing a product to ensure that it could withstand a certain amount of temperature fluctuation, he added.

HORECA supplies, on the other hand, were direct from warehouses—the company had them in Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Jalandhar, Jammu & Kashmir, Guwahati, Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar, New Delhi, and GoelRaipur.said he would like to continue to be involved in both the HORECA and retail businesses at the same level as he was currently—36–37 percent of the business is HORECA, with retail close to 50 percent and the rest being export (the company sends its products out to the US, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and has recently done a tie-up with Lulu).

The investment made into the business currently stands in the region of INR 45 crores, and they are also currently looking to expand their range of parathas.

The idea was to double production volumes by October 2022, increasing from 6,000 kg to 12,000 kg per day.

Sudo Foods has raised seed funding from Java Capital, Betaplus Capital, and prominent angel investors such as Ravi Saxena (MD, Wonderchef), Deep Bajaj (co-founder & CEO, Sirona Hygiene), and Ajay Garg (founder & MD, Equirus Capital), along with others. The fundraising news comes on the heels of Sudo Foods’ launch a few weeks ago, where the startup announced that after a year of operating in stealth mode, their plant-based chicken and mutton dishes were now retailing on their website and on popular online platforms like BigBasket. Sudo Foods’ ‘kind’ meat alternatives aim to ‘unjunk’ packaged food and offer India’s vast non-vegetarian population delicious, nutritious, sustainable snacking options. Their plant-based chicken samosas, chicken seekh kebabs, chicken popcorn, and mutton galouti kebabs use ethical ingredients which are all

oeld’s range of frozen foods was introduced to produce sustainable and ethical products that were pure, unadulterated, and, of course, vegetarian.

Taste, nutrition, cost, convenience, and a deep understanding of the Indian palate are critical success factors. These factors make a strong case for Sudo Foods - they have doubled down on taste and nutrition and their products are centered around the Indian consumer. Abhinav and Sadhika are very passionate founders, focused on building a large global brand. The product knowledge and sourcing tie-ups that they have gained in a short period of time since launch is impressive! Java Capital is excited to be a part of their growth story.”n

“We have the land and permission from both the state and the central governments to expand. “It is just the market that we need to look at, and if everything goes well and stays within the financial limits, we are ready to expand with the blessings of our investors,” he addedn

Elaborating on their investment, Bhargavi V, founding partner at Java Capital, says, “Plantbased meat is one of the fastest growing markets in the world, mostly fueled by ‘flexitarians’ taking to meat alternatives in addition to meat.

According to Archit Goel, the executive director and CFO of Shri Bajrang Alliance Ltd., the Raipurbased concern that owns the Goeld Frozen Food brand, they are a company that is heavily involved in steel, mining, media, and the education sector. Our group chairman, Suresh Goel (who also happens to be my uncle), wanted to diversify into the FMCG sector. We decided that we should explore a sector where we could look at producing good, pure food and decided to venture into the frozen food business,” said Goel. The foundation stone for the factory in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, was laid on March 19, 2022. The factory was inaugurated a few months later, in June 2022, in a virtual ceremony by the chief minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel, he said, adding that in the very same month they sent out their first consignment to Mumbai. The company has initiated operations in Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and ForVisakhapatnam.theHORECA segment, Goeld is doing products like the paratha, like our very popular Malabar parotta, and has customers like Swiggy, Ola Foods, and Barbeque Nation, who buy our parathas in large volumes running into tons. Talking about numbers, they sell close to two-and-a-half lakh pieces per month and have samosas, spring rolls, and naans—the latter being unique to them as there aren’t very many frozen naan producers.

The company also has a large variety of cheese products, which are also not very commonly available, Goel said.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution said that the firms have been directed by the department of Consumer Affairs to correct their labelling by declaring net quantity in the units of volume without stating temperature with weight of the product, within six months from the date of the direction issued, i.e., up to January 15, 2023. As per the provisions made under the rules, the net quantity of edible oil, vanaspati ghee, etc. needs to be declared either in weight or volume, and if declared in volume, then the equivalent weight of the commodity is mandatorily to be declared.

he union government has urged edible oil manufacturers, packers, and importers to state net quantity on packages in volume without temperature as well as weight. Under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, it is compulsory to declare the net quantity in terms of standard units of weight or measure apart from other declarations on all pre-packaged commodities in the interest of consumers.

The ministry said it is noticed that industries are proactively mentioning temperature while declaring the net quantity in volume. The manufacturers/ packers/importers are declaring the net quantity of edible oil, etc. in volume, mentioning the temperature at the time of packing along with the units of mass. Few manufacturers depicted temperatures of up to 600 °C.

It has been observed that such declaration of net quantity of edible oil, vanaspati ghee, etc. in terms of volume keeps the volume fixed (for example, 1 litre) at different temperatures with mass, which differs when the packaging mentions a higher temperature. The weight of soybean edible oil may be different at different temperatures. Therefore, the weight of edible oil is different at different temperatures. Hence, to ensure that the consumer gets the correct quantity in the package at the time of purchase,
