ringing fashion followers a week of style, innovation and trend alerts for the coming Autumn/ Winter 2015, Paris Fashion Week showcased renowned and talented designers on the runway. The nine days long fashion week was the evince of unrestrained talent and exquisite collection. It portrayed the convergence of fashion, with kindling mix of art and modernity. Let’s take a look at the colllection of five amazing designers.

“ T

o demolish the rule but to keep the tradition”, the vicariousness of this philosophy of Alexander McQueen was apparent at the Paris Fashion Week autumn/winter 15. Set in the prison, which incarcerated Marie Antoinette and Napoleon Bonaparte before they were executed, Sarah Burton presented the the collection in possibly the most riveting and dramatic setting since she took the helm in 2010.

Alexander McQueen Text By Divya Sharma 8

That moment when a rose is on the verge of decay, when the petals turn floppy, soft and crinkled, is, says Sarah Burton a beautiful thing. Burton, through her collection, captured a fading rose which is in its last days of existence. Skin toned fur collars on belted jacquard coats in matte and black manifested dark romanticism on the ramp. High victorian

collared ruffled dresses trimmed in cream and black coloured lace, stomach exposing dresses with sheer fabric and ruffled hem teamed with lacy leather choker lingerie gave the whole collection the desired feminine and elegant look. Pleated leather skirts with crimson dipped hem along with crimson ankled boots made it monumental on the ramp. Blood red had its tyranny over the collection as the models paraded in ankle kissing sheer gowns, once again, with high collars and see through fabric on the waist. Dishevelled and distorted hair do, pale makeup, vampire like insanely white complexion with contoured cheeks and dramatic eyes made the models look devastatingly pretty. The show was a great triumph and Alexander McQueen, once again, exhibited a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious collection. 9

he final day of Paris Fashion Week has been full of incredible looks and we cannot but help admire the bright and beautiful pieces presented to us through the Louis Vuitton fall 2015 line-up. Fur chubby coat given a graphic twist with leather fastenings, a cubical bag in hands, the feet cozyed up in black bootie with a white strap in front and the hair left free in boho waves All of these combined to create the perfect effect that tide us through the entire show.

Louis Vuitton “Fur Balls in Luxury” Structured peplums were an interesting choice that used classic rib jumpers and had them contemporize with heavy detailing that had them stand away from the body. The slash across the collarbone was a twist to the trending plunging V-necks, while the metal toggled belts added a rather unique touch.

The new big accessory from the ramp was the oversized vanity case (luxury luggage) that shines in the light and is used as a handbag. Huge bug-eyed sunglasses were definitely one of the latest LV statement pieces and we are totally in love with them. Shoes and sock boots had a low or mid height and even a slightly less stiletto heel to finish it off.

T

he Balmain fall/winter 2015-2016 collection was a mixture of sexy and classy, the elegant and the sporty, the monochrome with color blocking splashes. We saw a parade of glamorous designs, lots of sheer lace used for the brightly colored skin-tight long-sleeved bodysuits, wide leg jumpsuits and mini skirts, strong shoulders, as well as a rich color palette, lots of pleats, beaded fringe and sensual satin giving motion and freshness to those maxi designs. In line with this, the collection brings amazing evening-ready looks.

Balmain “Rainbow in fall” Vintage is bold and beautiful for Balmain, comprising a rainbow color palette of yellows, purples, oranges, turquoises, greens, fuchsias and hot pinks balanced with blacks, whites and glittery motifs. We saw stripes, romantic florals and abstract patterns put in sync of colors that look irresistible in combination with bold colorblocked designs.

Signature wide belts in different colors, as well as midriff-exposing cuts, offshoulder designs being used in the right measures to complement the looks rather than become focal points themselves. As it is fall after all and feeling comfy and cozy should be balanced with the gorgeousness of the pieces you carry.

ower and Poetry” , this is what Donna Karan called her Paris Fashion Week Autumn/ Winter 2015 show. Her staunch love for New york, “I’d rather promote New York than anything else in this world because New York to me means the world.”, was apparent as she manifested her collection against the backdrop of the romantic night skyline of New York. Her idea of Power and poetry came together in her collection as the as the garments exuded elegance, opulence and ease. Toggled jacquard jackets with lantern sleeves and sheer peek-a-book fabric inserted in skirts, created an interplay of

masculine and feminine silhouette. Brocade padded coats and a series of gowns with side vents or sheer hem, nicely clenched at the waist successfully brought the ‘oomph’ factor on the ramp. The ensemble elevated the whole concept of work wear with high collared silk shirts and faux fur leather coats. Open toe boots and two-strap heels gave an effortless look to the whole assemblage. Side parted congealed straight hair with nude lipstick allied together for a sophisticated formal look. Very true, Donna Karan does posses uncanny midas touch that can turn any outfit, insanely exquisite.

ime changes and the standard of beauty changes with it too. Pressure from society, peers, and relationships can make you feel sometimes that you are not fit to be there, but always remember to lift yourself up by loving yourself, if you do not loving yourself then nobody else will.

don’t be unrealistic that even if you eat junk you can be fit, Once this thing is in your head it will be easier for you to get back

However, being fat is not being healthy, you need to be fit and look good. XXXL size women who have surpassed their youthful weight have given up on the idea of being able to get back to a comfortable size and instead hide their bodies in drapes that make them feel low and look double their size. Thin women at the same time with no shape are also trying to hide their bodies under oversized clothing.

to a comfortable size with a confidence to love yourself. In the process don’t lose hope because end result will be great!

flaws. We at best should admire what we want to admire without being disturbed, take a tip or two and move on. This is where the obsession with fashionable dressed women should end.

I know all this is easier said, than done. But you got to have confidence and that zeal to be comfortable in your own skin. Some people are born skinny, but when one is not born that way genetically, then why to run behind it and achieve it unnaturally. Point is to be healthy and not thin as reed. Simply, One size cannot suit all. Why should everyone follow what models or actresses do, it is their job, they are being paid to do a certain act and to perfect that act they follow a regime to attain a certain figure. Professional trainer and dieticians are hired for this job. It is not what common women can do daily. So why all the hassle.

The standard of beauty changes year to year, decade to decade, century to century, and that has always been and always will be the case. Audrey Hepburn is considered one of the greatest beauties of all time -- today. But when Billy Wilder was casting the role of Holly Golightly in “Breakfast at Tiffanys” he did not want to hire her. She was rail thin and had a nose that was hardly what one would call a “button.” Billy wanted Marilyn Monroe. Hepburn became a legend after that film. One should not be obese, that is a disease altogether. One must be fit and graceful at any age. Nevertheless, wanting to loose weight just for the sake to look good, is disgusting and a wasted effort. An intelligent mind is as beautiful as a desirable body, if not more and much longer lasting too! So nurture that intellect in you.

Also, mostly magazines are edited and models blemishes and cellulite are taken away in order to sell products. Even in movies the celebrities are being edited and only now with the HD (high definition) television, we can see their

In the 16th and 18th centuries, fat women were found to be most beautiful and attractive, also in Egypt it was a sign of luck and wealth. Later came size “10” to be the it figure, then size “6” and ultimately size “0” was

16

introduced by Kareena Kapoor, which is not very realistic size for women who do not have plastic surgery, personal trainers or healthy meal charts to themselves. Today it is about being comfortable and even both Hollywood and Bollywood have moved away from thin to curvy. We have examples of Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, chubby Alia Bhatt and Parineeti Chopra doing big in the industry. It is a true sign of moving away from being only thin and giving importance to substance and content.

Learn to love yourself and embrace your body. Accentuate that part of your body which you feel is the best and is worth flaunting. Once you have established that part, be it your eyes, lips, midriff, long legs…dress them up, make it known. Avoid wearing tent size clothes to cover up. Shun black and shin with pretty pinks and shades of blue. Dieting is not easy but

Be positive while taking a look in the mirror, see the good in you. Shapely women are the future. Plus size women are the real people, even the designers have started working in this direction. Take a look at the Kardashian family and you will notice that they do not have perfect “10” bodies but look gorgeous while wearing anything because they emphasise their assets.Curves are sexy and that thin, stick look is a thing of the past. Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Eva Mendez all look stunning because they feel great and have the confidence to carry themselves off. 17

“The fashion coterie is looking beyond all the glitter and glamour.” ights, leggy models, glamour and designers, are synonymous with fashion shows. And to add to the cake, fashion weeks are filled with models donning designer clothes and after show drunk parties. But how often do we affiliate fashion with a social cause? Never, right? But the realm of fashion has now surfaced as something more powerful, it has moved beyond sheer glamour. Not only fashion is a mere manifestation of talent, it also contributes to noble and worthy social and environmental causes. Fashion being a powerful form of art has the competence to affect the society as a whole. There

have been umpteen examples of international and national fashion designers and also some fashion brands that have been largely contributing to different important causes. One of the renowned name in the world of charity is that of the fashion designer, Donna Karan. She is an active philanthropist, and working for disaster relief and children empowerment all over the world. She along with designers Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang and many others worked on project called “FASHION FOR HAITI: ONE MILLION HEARTS” for the URBAN ZEN FOUNDATION (2008) founded by Donna itself. They decorated papiermâché hearts that were handcrafted by Haitian designer Magali Dresse. 19

Donna Karan

Anita Dongre

Pachallina, Mercersburg clothing store hosted a fashion show last year in the month of October which aimed at eco-friendly fashion and also focussed on October’s designation as Domestic Violence Awareness month. The show manifested men’s and women’s sweaters which could be reversed or worn in different ways. Vera Wang, the American Fashion designer, designed for the brand Kohl which affiliated itself to the cause of breast cancer. The brand came out with a new pink coloured line of women products and the profit accumulated from the product was donated to support the fight against breast cancer. Two New York designers, Maria Tumminello and O’Neal Wyche created an organisation Adam & Wyche Fashion for a cause which works against bullying. Both the designers created a line of bracelets which helps to raise money for the charity. Albeit the intentional designers are widely known for setting a trend of “fashion for a cause” but their national counterparts can not be ignored. Manish Malhotra presented “The blue fashion runway” for Lakme Fashion Week summer resort 2015 which represented fashion for a cause fostering a global message of gender equality and prevention of gender based violence. Designer Anita Dongre is truly dedicated to the cause of green fashion through her brand Global Desi, AND and Grassroot. She has also collaborated with an NGO, Shop For Change that commits itself to the concept of fair trade in India. Archana Kochhar, a Mumbai- based designer is a dedicated member of the NGO BETI which works against female foeticide. 20

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion week spring/ summer 15 witnessed several designer who manifested their collection on runway for a cause. Virtues by Ashish, Vikrant and Viral took a stance for people living in tribulation because of AIDS. With scrupulous thread detailing, their collection was a beautiful manifestation of whites and red. The renowned deigned duo, Gauri and Nanika collaborated with grow-trees. com and their collection was a exhibition of their responsibility to save Earth. By portraying melting glaciers and smokey chimneys on their attires, Gauri and Nanika addressed the grave issue of global warming. The national award winning designer, Wendell Rodricks showcased his dewy collection in support of the hand loom weavers. The young talent, Nida Mahmood has decided to take a stance for the vanishing hand painted film posters artists. This concern of hers, led her to set up a trust, the New India Bioscope Company with five poster artists. She,also, has Bollywood posters beautifully glossed over her dresses. The ardency of these fashion designers is significant and fashion can act as a catalyst to bring about good social changes, but, for a real and substantial change, the whole society should work collectively and pledge for a better world.

Sarojini Nagar is on the bucket list of every new girl in the city and every tourist in the city. “The lady with magical brush VIDYA TIKARI During the hustle- bustle backstage of Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn/ Winter 2015-16,

Harshita Kakar

got some time to spend with the

Creative Director of Monsoon Spa & Salon and the make up expert Vidya Tikari! Where in we got a chance to get to know her, her passion for makeup artistry and more. Here are some excerpts from the exclusive interview.

35

HK-What has been the most challenging moment of your career? VT- It was the surely during the makeup of the 9000 girls who performed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the International Commonwealth Games which was held in New Delhi. This completion of this huge project was also appreciated by the Limca Book of Records in the year 2011. That couldn’t have been possible without a great team work and coordination. HK- How is it being associated with MAC and FDCI? VT- MAC is by far the most amazing products in India, also here we are working with the MAC team and it has been a great pleasure. As far as FDCI is concerned, Monsoon’s association has been long with the Council and I am honored to be a part of it. HK-On what morals do you work? VT- I would say, Intense professionalism, reliability and most importantly versatility. Harshita Kakar- Firstly we would like to know about your journey in the industry? Vidya Tikari- It has been 24 years in the industry, I started in 1991 and now I am at a very happy place, with Monsoon it is my second season, lot of energy, I love working backstage, meeting new people, experimenting with looks that’s the icing on the cake during fashion weeks. Bridal is also my forte, so that is one thing girls look forward too. HK- You’re most unforgettable moment? VT- Ahh, my most unforgettable moment would be I think right in the beginning when I did Aish..Aishwarya Rai’s and Sushmita Sen’s makeup at that time, they both became Miss India and Miss Universe respectively, so that was like fantastic for me. I was all over the place then hahaa. HK- What are the top three makeup essential that you would suggest for this Autumn/Winter season? VT-Ombre lips! So it is all about deep lips and shaded with light color. So you would have a dark deep lipstick , to team up with really good foundation suiting your skin color, because your skin should look even, not too glossy and not too matt. It should look healthy and glowing! And the next one is “Eyeliner”, so get your waterproof eyeliner…all ready. You’re set to 36

rock this season with these essentials. HK- What all celebrities have you worked with, and who has been your favorite? VT- Me and my team has done wonders on numerous celebrity faces. Like Madhuri Dixit, Gul Panag, Bipasha Basu, Shushmita Sen, Anoushka Shankar, Priyanka Chopra,Mallika Sherawat, Malaika Arora Khan etc. Ummm, my favourite would be undoubtedly the global icon Aishwarya! HK- And, which young actress would you try your makeup wand on? VT- I would love to work with Deepika Padukone, I think she has a lovely skin tone and structure. HK- Apart from Celebrity Makeup, you also specialize in Bridal makeup… tell us something about that? VT-Before determining on a look, I take into consideration everything from the client’s character, clothing, skin-tone, and preferences etc. to give the bride the right looks that would suit her looks in the best possible way. The ‘classic marriage look’ as according to me is a radiant, shiny combination of red and gold. There’s also a lot of mascara, kohl, eye shades etc. which makes the bride look like a princess.

HK- Lastly mam, Who are your favorite designers for this autumn/winter 2015 collection? VT-It just depends, I love Malini Ramani ‘s collection, I also like Not so serious by Hemant& Nandita! so these two were my favorites this season, and I absolutely loved working on models for them.

I would love to work with Deepika Padukone, I think she has a lovely skin tone and structure.

Celebrating

Intelligence?

Didion as the face of Celine. By Divya Sharma

A

few days back I came across the latest ad campaign of the luxury brand, Celine and it took me aback with consternation to see Joan Didion as its new face. For those who are unfamiliar with the name Joan Didion, I would like to start with a little introduction about her. Didion is a 80 years old American author, renowned for her novels ( The years of Magical thinking, Slouching Towards the Bethlehem and many more) and literary journalism. Photographed by Juergen Teller in black and her wrinkled yet glowing face, half concealed by the big black sunglasses, Didion, albeit, looks majestic but still, there is something strikingly unusual about the ad. 38

Joan Didion in new ad campaign of celine

Miranda Kerr

ex-editor of vogue, you’ll realise

While, one can appreciate Celine’s creative director, Phoebe Philo for deploying a 80 years old as the face of the French brand and we are not made accustomed to some skinny stick models. The bracing message that Philo sends by this ad can be very well deciphered, that fashion has realised that beauty even comes with silver hair and also that a wrinkled face can be exalted in fashion. However, my mind still grapples and seeing Didion in the ad has left me bewildered. I am, indubitably, enthralled to see fashion vanquishing all the long held conventions that have tyrannised the glamour industry. I am glad that fashion is gradually embracing imperfection and timeless beauty, rather than its “36-24-26” norm. Fashion is finally trying to come out of the circumscribed boundary and trying not to be what is called “frivolous” and trying to incorporate within larger world and finally, “Intelligence” is coming on the surface. But, my contentment to such metamorphosis in the fashion world is limited to a certain extent. Why? If for a fraction of seconds, you brush aside the fact that Didion is a writer and also the 40

Phoebe Philo

that the ads these brands come up with, are merely to see the product. Instantly, it becomes commensurable that Didion is “just” used to sell the brand, the highly overpriced brand. Doesn’t it ache your heart to know that such intelligent and revered woman is the subject of advertising? However, Asmita Aggarwal, fashion writer, is of the view that whenever she buys something from the brand, she buys because she is inspired by the ideology of the brand. She is well versed with the works of Didion and truly appreciate the fact that Pheobe Philo has also tried to revolutionised fashion ( she’s not the one,Doreen Lawrence was used in a Marks & Spencer ad campaign last year). I agree to the point that Asmita Aggarwal has made, but somehow I feel that not everyone buys the brand because of its inner values, they go for the outer appearance of the brand and hence, buy it. I believe that in the world that we live in, people buy things because they what to maintain some status-quo. They would hardly bother about the ideology that the brand has to offer. Fashion is, indubitably, taking a major turn but I completely think its pathetic to use highly revered people merely as vassals to sell your highly overpriced products.

HK- How is it different working in Sydney and India? JS- Oh boy, Indian organizations are so relaxed which is a good thing in a way for me. If they say 9pm then it is definitely going to be 9:309:45pm, it is that relaxed. But I fit in quite well.

HK- Who according to you are India’s most stylish women? JS- I guess from the people I know, it is Anahita Shroff from the fashion world and Sonam Kapoor from Bollywood. HK- Weirdest travel experience you’ve had? JS-Actually, I haven’t had a weird travel experience. They were all very good. But Italy is one strange place. HK-Turn-offs and turn-ons in men? JS-Creepy. People who come up with weird oneliners. People who are witty, with whom you can have a conversation, this is a turn-on for me. HK- You can’t leave home without? JS- My lip balm, credit card and my mobile (giggles). HK-Is size zero good or unhealthy? JS- It depends on the metabolism, if you are size zero and eat well, then I don’t think there is any issue. Also workout is equally important. HK- Lastly, what one advice would you give to the aspiring models? JS- I would just say be true to yourself, people will manipulate you. Show disbelief in you, but have faith in yourself and give them reasons to be surprised. Also I love surprising people!

peaking up about personal struggles is highly uncommon for female celebrities in India. Like most of her colleagues in the Indian film industry, the actress is best known for her beauty, stylesmile and string of successful Bollywood movies. In past interviews, Padukone appears poised and politically correct. Female actresses are expected to be seen, not heard. However, celebrity women often risk their star status if they raise their voices. But in an up close opinion note for Indian newspaper Hindustan Times, Padukone writes: ”I thought it was stress, so I tried to distract myself by focusing on work, and surrounding myself with people, which helped for a while. But the nagging feeling didn’t go away….over a period of time, it got worse.” After intervention from loved ones especially her mother, she went to see two psychiatrists, and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. She also reveals she was on medication for her situation while filming, “Happy New Year.” Padukone addresses the taboo in South Asian society that surrounds mental health concerns, and calls for more “support and understanding.” She also writes about the urgency to address this issue by citing a World Health Organization statement that depression will be the most widespread epidemic in the next few years.

FASHION

Considering the stereotypes that Bollywood creates about mental illness, if someone is indeed suffering from anxiety disorder, they probably would not talk about it to either friends or family for fear of being equated with Fashion’s Priyanka Chopra, who downed tequilas and ended up in bed with a man who is a good racist Indian mother’s nightmare come true (a black model). For the sake of money-minting melodrama, Bollywood has continuously made depression seem caricaturish, disgusting or even evil at times. As far as Hindi films go, depression is something that makes us quite and feel sorry, not react with sympathy. And that’s why Deepika Padukone stepping out of the comfortable filmy web of discussing nothing more than work-out regiments and promoting films is a big deal. A great deal, in fact.

Depression:

In and Out in Open Recently actress Deepika Padukone publicly revealed her struggle with

depression and anxiety, coming out with it without making it sound like a mental illness. Kudos to that! Text by Harshita Kakar 44

I thought it was stress, so I tried to distract myself by focusing on work, and surrounding myself with people, which helped for a while. But the nagging feeling didn’t go away….over a period of time, it got worse.

Given standards that a woman’s reputation must adhere to - be it socially or professionally, regardless of the industry Padukone’s confession becomes all the more relevant and important. In discussing her condition in detail, Padukone first dismissed the common idea that depression is glamorous. It wasn’t her coming back from parties, weeping and sobbing on her driver’s shoulder. It was practical, tiring and exhausting. Padukone talks about how during the middle of work while shooting for Happy New Year - she found it difficult to wake up and go for the shoot. That is something many of us are familiar with - that heavy emptiness that invisibly anchors you to the bed. The stressful directionless stretch of a day before you that you fill with coffee, chit chating and taking 46

orders from bosses - it’s this that is reflected in Padukone’s descriptions of depression and that’s what makes it feel and sound real. Her account of her battle with depression is nondramatic, almost clinical. It reads like an report of battling with cold and flu or conjuctivitis where you sense the symptoms, for a while hope you are really not suffering from it and then seek a doctor to cure it. It is as normal as that. Dimpled Beauty,Deepika Padukone also announced that she will start a foundation to promote mental health care on March 21. The foundation will be called as ‘Live Laugh Love’. March 2, 2015 was finalised as that was the day that she decided to seek professional help last year. And since she herself suffered, she wanted to work towards improving the mental health scenario in India.

thing of beauty is a joy for ever”, true enough, this quote from one of John Keats’ poem describes the exquisite and awe- inspiring beauty of Cartier panther. The panther, a symbol of beauty, elegant femininity and dauntless courage. And, Cartier celebrated the 100th anniversary of the alluring and luxurious panther last year, in 2014. Also, to celebrate the longevity of the big feline. the jewellery maison launched a 56 pieces “Panthere de Cartier” collection. From bracelets and necklaces, to earrings and rings, this collection exhibits the panther in motley of moods, ranging from angry to triumphant to skittish. The collection is embellished with emeralds, onyx, beryls and diamonds and of course, the widely designed pieces of this collection has Cartier panther with emerald green stone in his eyes. Let’s delve into the history of Cartier to discern more about this symbol of beauty and courage, the mesmerising Panther. The iconic feline plunged its way into the French Maison Cartier’s designs in the early 20th century, the time when fascination with animal skin was rampant in the fashion world. 48

The first panther pattern appeared on wrist watch in 1914, carved in diamonds and onyx. Soon after, a pendant watch was created with panther pattern.

Until the first world war, the panther scarcely ever appeared in medieval or Renaissance Europe. Panther skin in the sixteenth and seventeenth century was a treasured item and it was revered for its intricate patterned fur. As Europe unfolded its wings and explored and colonised the world, the European painters delineated the new colonies and their so called “Barbaric and uncivilised people” clad in leopard skin. Eventually, by 1900, “Lady with panther” superseded the medieval themes of virgin and unicorn and became the favourite motif in European art. This erotic combination of lady and panther was alluring and in 1919, was portrayed beautifully by Belgian symbolist Khnopff in “La Caresse” and it prepared the panther to pounce into high jewellery scene. The palpability of panther’s image roared high after Elsie de Wolf employed the image for stylish interiors. She splendidly used the skin of the exotic animal in interior designs and it could be seen at her Villa in Versailles. Soon whole of the fashion world conformed to the “panther tradition”, and incorporated panther skins to their works.

Above: An illustration by George Barbier for Cartier

The designers at Cartier, too, found the panther imbued with inspiration and voila! the first panther pattern appeared on wrist watch in 1914, carved in diamonds and onyx. Soon after, a pendant watch was created with panther pattern. One of the surprising thing is,the first image of panther at Cartier firm appeared not in jewelled form, but in an illustration by George Barbier “ A Lady with a Panther” . Louis Cartier, the founder of Cartier, commissioned the picture made by Barbier to be used as an exhibition card by Cartier. The Strikingly beautiful image was used in advertising by Cartier. However, Cartier was yet to create the full panther figure in its accessories. Apparently the first feature of the entire animal by Cartier was seen around 1917, in a vanity case owned by Jeanne Toussaint, a close friend of Louis Cartier and later Cartier’s creative director. Her fascination for the exotic panther could be seen in the number of animal furs she owned and also, she adorned her apartment with luxurious furs.

Louis Cartier, in 1927, borrowed Peter Lemarchand, the creative genius, from his brother. Lemarchand, after observing the big felines at the Vincennes Zoo, drew innumerable naturalistic sketches of the panther. With these sketches, Toussaint’s emerald, diamond and onyx panther became a reality. And, Cartier’s first of many brooches featured reclining panther in onyx and diamond. The panther flame fully kindled in 1940s when another very adventurous woman came into Cartier scene. Albeit the facts are vague, but it is known that in 1948 the Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, open a Cartier box with the first golden cat brooch as a present for her by the Duke of Windsor. A year later, she added another panther jewel to her collection and this time it was a diamond panther with enigmatic 50

blue sapphire spots crouching around sapphire. The third piece of jewellery was a beautiful bracket of an outstretched panther in diamond and onyx with green emerald eyes. How heavenly! The trend further bloomed when in 1950 the editor of America’s Harper Bazar, Mrs. Daisy Fellowers, ordered an impeccable diamond, sapphire and emerald brooch clip. In 1957, Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan contracted for a suite of panther jewels for his wife Nina Aga Khan. Her parure had a panther pendant , an open panther-head bangle, a panther brooch and a bracelet with panther heads that can be worn as earrings. From this point of time, the panther roared high and has been engraved in the pages of history. The panther remains Cartier’s most favourite and beautiful design.

CULTURE

‘She’ In Bollywood

An overview of how women have been portrayed in Hindi Cinema for many decades. By Divya Sharma 52

F

or past few decades, cinema has proven to be the most feasible apparatus on which debates about culture and identity have been held. Films manifest social changes and also, shape cultural attitudes. Being a popular mass media, Cinema acts as a cornerstone in embossing opinions, constructing images and also augmenting poplar cultural values. One such cultural myth that films reflect is, the treatment of women, the portrayal of women along the defined and restricted edges. An American film critic, Molly Haskell pens down in her book “From Reverence to Rape: The Treatment of Women in the Movies”: “A big lie perpetrated on the society is the idea of woman’s inferiority and the movie business is an industry dedicated for the most part to reinforcing this lie.”

What would men be without women? Scarce, sir…mighty scarce.” -Mark Twain

The veraciousness of Molly Haskell can be very well testified if one embarks on the long journey of Hindi Cinema and scrutinies various films that the renowned directors have presented the audience with. The film industry has been a witness to various mutation in the representation of women in hindi cinema, albeit the celluloid has been indubitably male centric. Women in Bollywood have more or less played defined roles which conform to the values upheld by the Indian society. Women in Bollywood have more or less been uni-dimensional characters, who are either good or bad, with no shades of grey. There is either a good woman, the wife or the vamp, who in other words can also be defined as the “other woman” and this dichotomy is reinforced in hindi cinema time and again. Films are largely inspired by the famous mythology, mythology that is preponderantly accountable for upholding a certain image of woman; the image of woman as “Sita” who is the epitome of virtues and values Films like “Dahej” (1950), “Devi” (1970), “Biwi ho to aisi” (1988) exhibit women as submissive wives who succumb to the patriarchal values. Albeit the films were criticised for the strong patriarchy they manifested, but there were subtle innuendos of patriarchy being patronised as the victim wives continue to be the “pati vrata” wives and continue to bear the physical and emotional torture inflicted on them. 53

“She is meek, docile and domestic, ideal and noble or she is the extreme oppositereckless and irresponsible”. This is another genus of

Directors like Sooraj Barjatya and Karan Johar win the race in reinforcing the patriarchal values in Indian society. While the women in their films play

“The heroine is always secondary in a film. She is devoid of any independence. It’s the male who leads the story.” the depiction of women in Bollywood. In “Biwi no.”1(1999) Karishma Kapoor is shown to have sacrificed her career for a blissful marriage. When the husband philander, it’s the other woman, Sushmita Sen who is blamed. At the end of the film, the husband is exonerated from all his vices and he reconciles to his wife and it’s “together forever” scenario. 56

an important character but somehow their identity is lost if one scrutinies the script of their films. In “Hum apke Hain Kaun” (1994), Madhuri Dixit succumbs to the wishes of her family, agrees to marry the husband of her deceased sister and decide to sacrifice the “love” of her life. In “Kuch kuch hota hai” (1998), Shahrukh Khan doesn’t mind flirting with girls, but he would only prefer

The heroine is always secondary in a film. She is devoid of any independence. It’s the male who leads the story. She is “placed” in the film to entertain, provide glamour or relief to the story. In “Agneepath” (2012), Priyanka Chopra is of no significance to the story. It’s Hritik Roshan who is busy avenging his murdered father.

Bollywood has also explored the lives of courtesans in films like “Devdas”, “Umraoon Jaan”, “Chameli”. Yet again, these characters are there in the film to evoke sympathy from the hero. The hero falls in love with the courtesan but never marries her as it proves to be an impediment in the purity of the institute called marriage. There were films such as “Hunterwali” (1935) , “Bandid Queen” (1994), “Tehzeeb” (2003) ,where the heroines are central to the story. These heroines take matter in their own hands and refuse to adhere to the conventions set up for women in the Indian society. “ She is fearless and courageous and doesn’t adhere to the hollow patriarchal rule.” On the positive side, there are some film makers who have tried to abolish the establish

stereotypes and have dared to explored subjects from women’s perspective. Films like “No one killed Jessiaca” (2011), “Cheeni kum” (2007), “Dirty Picture” (2011), PAA (2009), “Queen” (2014) have sketched extraordinary themes and kept women as the central characters. Actresses have not hesitated to take over bold roles. Vidya Balan and Konkana Sen Sharam are known to be the heroines that strive to change the direction of the mainstream hindi cinema. Heroines of Madhur Bhandarkar are strong and rebellious and empowered women. His films “Satta” “(2003), “Corporate” (2006), “Fashion” (2008) manifest women as strong, independent and ambitious. However, the reality hits hard on face if one scans through the item songs of the contemporary hindi movies. Sheila, Munni and Chameli

are the examples of women being objectified and being the object of “male gaze”. They are nothing but a mere pleasure to the male eye and all the curves on their body are directly proportional to the degree of male revelry. Hindi cinema is trying hard to divert from inveterated notions of a woman. Cinema is a popular form of mass media and is responsible for manoeuvring minds. Cinema should come up with progressive representation of women. Such portrayal would do justice to the women of our society for:

“Within her[woman] is the power to create, nurture and transform.” 57

Bollywood And Politics Politics is Indian celebrities new undertaking, lets read how and why both of these industries need each other on and off. By Harshita Kakar

n India many stars have made a seamless transition from filmdom to politics. Most film stars enter politics when they see their filmy career taking a down slide, so in order to extend their visibility work life they jump to politics. This is the trend not just in Southern film industry but bollywood is willingly putting its foot in mainstream politics. In the South, film heroes are often depicted as do-gooders or messiahs of the poor and this image carries off-screen as well. As a result, film stars enter politics at the far end of their film careers to capitalize on the popular goodwill. South superstar Chiranjeevi and Tamil superstar Rajnikant have been planning the launch of their political dreams for a long time.Though hindi film stars have a

60

wider approach but they rarely perform roles similar to what south stars have done. Bollywood film stars have rarely launched their own political outfits and have preferred to join mainstream parties. By the years, Sunil Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dilip Kumar and Govinda have joined the Congress, while actors such as Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Khanna, Hema Malini and Dharmendra have joined the BJP. While only a few of them have ventured into electoral politics, others have takenthe less risky road to Rajya Sabha.

Shabana Azmi

Political parties are in dire need of such celebrities, as they are famous and articulate enough to engage public to vote for the party. Parties really don’t have anything to highlight or discuss so they ensure a win situation by enrolling a celebrity. Film stars and cricketers have been seen time and again on the political front through years. Celebrities in parliament: Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan took to politics in 80’s and was elected as the member of parliament through Allahabad constituency, being his hometown. But realizing that politics was not about investing emotions, he took a U-turn. Whereas Rajesh Khanna plunged into politics back in 70’s, being a supporter of Congress and then a MP.

Prime Minister of India.), Jaya Bachchan (One of the finest actresses of her time, she was specially known for giving a natural touch in acting. She was elected as a Samajwadi Party member of parliament representing Rajya Sabha in 2010. She was further re-elected in 2012), Javed Akhtar,Rekha,Navjot Singh Sidhu, Paresh Rawal, Govinda, Jayaprada, Jitender, Poonam Dhillon and the likes. Newbies are Rakhi Sawant, who has initiated her own political party, and Gul Panag (Aam admi party) who stood against Kirron Kher from Chandigarh constituency.

Even currently there are bolly- brigade serving as MP’s –

Hema Malini(The lady who was the epitome of beauty in Bollywood and the dancing legend will be contesting for the upcoming general election from Mathura. With the rapid decline in the quality of politicians today—their lack of appeal and their poor oratorical skills, for instance— political parties have increasingly looking towards the filmdom to enhance their appeal. Until 2004, the trend was to hire an actor for campaign. In 2002, Govinda was signed by the Congress to perform on the eve of the Punjab assembly polls. Amitabh Bachchan has provided his share of glamour to the public in Uttar Pradesh to continuesly help his then friend now acquaintance Amar Singh of the Samajwadi Party. Rakhi Sawant

Recently, however, parties have realized their stupidity in taking for granted the intelligence of the Indian voters. Be it municipal polls or Lok Sabha elections, public prefer candidates who are accessible to them and solve their local problems. Most Bollywood film stars fail to impress voters as they rarely visit their constituencies after winning them. Their star status also keeps them away from the constituents. As a result, most film stars fail to win their parliamentary seats for the second time. There are exceptions to this trend, though. The late Sunil Dutt and Vinod Khanna gained widespread acceptability for their hard work and wide reach as they made a realistic transition to politics, while for many others, politics remained and remains an unfamiliar and uncomfortable environment. For instance, in the last Lok Sabha, film stars Govinda and Dharmendra found the going tough and did not receive their party nominations to defend their seats, because their attendance was too low and they could not materialize the purpose of being in that position. Being members of parties, Bollywood actors rarely manage to get into leadership positions and remain at the back seat. They are not taken seriously by their own parties and often find it too difficult to ignore.

CULTURE Let me define the word feminism for every one who has allocated an alienated meaning to this beautiful term. Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of equality of the sexes. However, most of the “acclaimed” feminists, today, harangue about women being superior to men and men being an impediment to “the women’s movement”. Feminism is not about battle of sexes, but it’s a battle against oppression from any quarter, it’s a battle against segregation of sexes. It’s about emancipation from deeprooted sexist attitude and all chauvinistic beliefs, it’s certainly not about getting rid of men!

MALE BASHING? No, It’s not the answer!”

I

Divya Sharma delineates why male bashing is taking feminism nowhere.

t was International women’s day few weeks before and everyone must have noticed how the social media, be it twitter, Facebook or Instagram, came alive with all the vicious, obnoxious and damaging remarks about males. Images and quotes claiming that men are the reason for women being inferior or men are culpable of damaging women rather than being helpful were all over. Quote on “why a woman needs feminism” and casuistic reasons to justify feminism were palpable all over the social media. Scrutinising these thoughts, my mind is haunted by one question, “Do people really know the meaning of feminism?”

64

How about a scenario where there are no ridiculous stories about men on social media? How about a scenario where there are no more statements about getting rid of men or about women being well off without men? Instead of ridiculing men and making them resentful, how about we try to maintain harmony and understand that men and women co-exist together? Everyone must have be aquatinted with the fable of Adam and Eve. God created the first woman;Eve,from the rib of Adam’s body. It evinces that god did not create female as a separate human being. God intended Eve to be Adam’s ‘helpmate’, to stand beside him. American singer and actress, Zosia Mamet has rightly said, “I think feminism’s a bit misinterpreted. It was about casting off all gender roles. There’s nothing wrong with a man holding a door open for a girl. But we sort of threw away all the rules, so everybody’s confused. And dating becomes a sloppy, uncomfortable, unpleasant thing.” Feminists, in most part of the world, are fighting for bizarre reasons. The pivot point of the whole argument is not the supremacy of any one sex, rather it’s about equality of both sexes. Both the sexes should try to decipher a lesserknown fact that they are equal parts of complete ecstatic whole, and one cannot exist without other. Men and women, both, should together work to disintegrate all the dogmas and misogynistic belief and strive to prosper together.

Feminism is not a dirty word. It does not mean you hate men, it does not means you hate girls that have nice legs and a tan, and it does not mean you are a bitch or a d***; it means you believe in equality. -Kate Nash

clandestine encounter with ghost? Divya Sharma talks about the rare medical phenomenon, Sleep Paralysis.

66

You lurch into consciousness from a vague dream, a beam of light crawling into your eyelid. You do your damnedest to open your eyes, but every attempt turns out to be forlorn. You are unable to move and your chest feels to be plunging under pressure. You sense some rancorous shadow ascending towards you. You hear dizzy voices in your ears and you fail at deciphering them. You ardently try to scream or move, but everything is rendered nugatory. ”

Well, this certainly is not an excerpt from a horror movie. It’s a real medical condition. This scary and atypical phenomenon is known as Sleep paralysis. The situation where a person awakens from sleep to find that he is unable to move or speak. It is possibly a hereditary disorder where a person experiences very petrifying seconds or may be, minutes of complete body paralysis with very little breathe and eye movement. It may happens only once in a lifetime or it could be a recurring process. Research shows that there are nearly 6% people on this earth who experience sleep paralysis frequently, while 40% of people describe experiencing sleep paralysis at some point of their lives. “ I have witnessed it quite sometimes in my life. In middle of nowhere in my sleep, I find myself standing on a mountain, a colossal mountain. And the very next second, I fall off the mountain. Sometimes, I experience some shadow or some evil presence in my room, Sometimes I feel like someone is trying to suffocate me or strangle me. Sometimes I hear uncanny voices, like someone is trying to say something to me and am not able to

comprehend it completely. I Try hard to fight back, I try to move my legs, I try to scream but nothing happens. But after a minute or two, I regain my consciousness. “, a victim recounts her horrid experience. To know why this, seemingly uncanny, yet pure medical phenomenon occurs, let’s delve a little into science. When a person sleeps, his body undergoes two different states, REM and NonREM sleep. NREM (non rapid eye movement) occurs first and takes over 75% of his total sleep. REM (rapid eye movement), on the other hand, is the period when most of the dreaming takes place and it’s when the sleeper looks at the moving objects in his dreams. But if a person directly awakens into or from the REM period , he encounters Sleep paralysis. So it could be understood, simply, as some error of the neural transmission in the brain during the REM sleep period. And it’s because of these abnormal brain activities that a person hallucinates. However, the victim of sleep paralysis is easily convinced that what he has seen, is some evil spirit or ghost. 67

So, what leads to sleep paralysis? Anxiety is the utmost reason that leads to sleep paralysis. Lack of sleep, bipolar disorder, stress or other sleep problems are the major factors that lead to sleep paralysis. Your curiosity will be quenched to know that sleep paralyses is known to all the cultures throughput the world and everywhere it has different connotations. It is known as “old Hag” in Newfoundland. It is believed that there’s a hideous bitch who pins down the chests of the sleepers. Japanese believes in “Kanashibari”, the fate of the unfortunates who are tied by evil spirits in their sleep. Some like to believe it as alien encounter. In old Norse, there is a tale of “mara” who is a vile spirit, who bestrides the body of the sleepers as if riding a horse and try to strangle them. To wrap up the discussion about the rare medical condition, let’s see what a one of victims of sleep paralysis has done. Nicolas Bruno, conceptual photographer, has suffered from SP since his childhood. He took notes of the visions every time he experienced SP. He recreated his visions in photographs.

The cure of sleep paralysis? Yes, consulting a doctor will surely help. But how about you get acquainted with some ways to wake from sleep paralysis?

- Just don’t fight: In the middle of your sleep, if you feel like someone is trying to stifle you, don’t fight back. Fight back will increase the fear. - twist your toe: One of the excellent ways to wake from sleep paralysis is to try to move a finger or your toe. Or clenching your fist can also help. - Focus on breath: if you can control your breathing, it will alleviate the chest pain that comes with sleep paralysis. And also, you’ll be able to control your fear. A few moments pf focused breathes will wake you up.

4

- Help form sleep partner: If you share your bed with someone, tell them to observe your nightmare patterns. And the next time you are witnessing Sleep paralysis, your partner will wake you up.

How has Greek Mythology influenced the modern society? By Divya Sharma

I

n 1955, the famous poet and scholar, Robert Graves wrote, “Myth has two functions. The first is to answer the sort of awkward questions that children ask… The second function.. is to justify an existing social system and account for traditional rites and customs.” In fact, yes, if we scrutinise the world around us and delve more into it, we’ll acknowledge how accurate Graves was back in 1955. The impact of greek mythology in contemporary society cannot be underemphasised. Art, culture, modern language, industry, all of them exhibit the impact of greek mythology in today’s society.

71

Not every one is acquainted with greek mythology. But one must know that there’s no single original text in greek mythology as it is in Christian bible or the written hindu vedas. In fact, the earliest greek myth was a part of oral tradition and its plots and themes were unravelled eventually in classical literature. To recapitulate, Greek myth was full of brave and courageous heroes and also a lot of Gods who resided on mount Olympian and yes, they constantly intervened in human lives. So, how are our lives influenced by greek mythology? Not a lot of people are accustomed to the fact that greek mythology , to a large extent, has shaped the english language. A “Herculean task”, for an instance, means task that requires great efforts and it is a direct reference to the myth about the twelve labours of Hercules. The expression “caught between a rock and hard place” is the direct reference to the story of soldiers caught between the monster Scylla and Charybdis of greek myth. Various phrases such as “Achilles heels”, “the midas touch”, the face that launched a thousand ships”, “opening a pandora’s box” allude to different chronicles of greek mythology. Did you also know that the other name of Earth is Gaia? (Gia being the mother of earth in greek myth.)

I think that we need mythology. We need a bedrock of story and legend in order to live our lives coherently.

- Alan Moore

Other than the english language, the greek mythology has inspired art and popular culture. There have been several movies on mythical characters. The movies such as “Percy Jackson and the lightening thief”,“Hercules” and “Troy” delineate the greek myth for the modern audience. Leonardo Dicaprio’s movie “Inception” is hugely inspired by Greek myth for it manifest the myth of labyrinth. The mythical prince Ariadne was well versed with the secrets about manipulating the labyrinth. Even many writers and poets such as Shakespeare, Dante. Milton, T.S eliot were deeply inspired by the mythology and it could be witnessed in the direct allusions they used in their works. The games of Olympics also comes from games that were held in honour of the god Zeus in ancient Greece. Also, Morphine, a narcotic drug that is used to relieve pain, derives from the greek god of sleep, Morpheus. Lastly, the greek mythology has exerted its influence on business industry.

Their are several companies that used ancient greek terms Nike:

as their company name and logo:

Amazon:

Nike is the greek The famous goddess of victory. e-commerce site The renowned is taken after the sportswear brand greek mythology. was inspired by Not many people the greek myth. know that the site And it does make is named after the a,mple sense that race of warrior nike took after women. such mythological name, afterall, nike stands for victory in anything and everything. Just do it!

Venus:

Venus is Roman name of aphrodite. Aphrodite was the goddess of love, beauty and pleasure. Venus is the brand that is famous from women skin care and beauty products.

Tennnessee titans:

This professional football team’s name is taken after the titans. Titans were before the god and goddesses of mythology. It is from where Zeus, Hades and poseidon came from.

Trozan:

Ok, the condom company too is inspired form the mighty greeks. Inhabitants of the mighty city that was destroyed by the Greeks during the Trojan War, after a siege of ten years; international manufacturer of condoms and birth control products They were stong, very strong!

Start with your target customer in mind: When you know your customer inside out, you will be able to make an effective merchandising display. Harrowing into customer’s psychological behaviours will help to a great extent.

Try to beguile all of their 5 senses. Appealing the eyes is an easy task, but the real struggle comes in when you have to engage the other 4 senses too. So, you have to create a multi sensory experience, which in the industry is also know as “sensory branding”.

1

Eyes: There are umpteen ways for communicating your messages through the consumers. Using colours for triggering the psychological brain, symmetry balance, contrast are some of the ways to accumulate customers’ attention.

T How to create

store design for an effective display? By Divya Sharma

74

here are a lot of things that need to be focussed when you delve into the world of retail. You would either want to start a pop-up shop or you would want your own boutique retail store. And of course, one of the most important things that you must know is how to efficiently employ space for visual merchandising. Let’s talk about creating efficacious merchandising display that will not only attract customer’s attention but also get them to make a good purchase.

2

Sound: ok, so it is proved that the music you play inside your store has a profound but subtle impact on customers. Depending o your store, select a music that will fascinate people.

3 4

Touch: Give customers the ability to feel and try whatever they like.

Smell: The scent is considered to be reach your brain cells faster and is said to control both memory and emotions.

5

Taste: This can do wonders if you give your customers a chance to actually taste the samples before they buy it.

The rule of three:

Most of the visual merchandisers employ the rule of three for an effective display. So what is this rule of three? It basically means to work in a set of three, placing them side by side while making a display. You can also use the “Pyramid principle”, where the taller item is on the top and the other two are placed a step down. The reason for using the rule of three is because such asymmetrical placement allures eyes.

Let lights make the mood:

Lighting heavily dictates the mood and emotions of the customer. The mood of a runway show, a night club or a classy restaurant largely depends on the lighting done there. Using spotlight to accentuate a certain product and it sure will do wonders.

Like with like:

Placing like products with like products will give customers to buy more items from you. It is also useful for customers for they do not have to look around the store and find appropriate match, instead, they can get it right at one place, nicely placed.

EVENTS

ndia Art Fair brought in 94 exhibitors from 19 countries. Art galleries from all across the globe participated in the expo and thus gave established and amateur artists an opportunity to promote their art and techniques. Exhibiting galleries presented their art works to the entire art fraternity and it was through this event that the Indian market got promoted to the rest of the world. Some of the galleries who are likely to exhibit in the next edition of this event will be Art Alive Gallery New Delhi, India, Photoink New Delhi, India and many more. For four days each year, New Delhi becomes a centre for the visual arts, with the India Art Fair as the hub of spin-off events such as seminars, glamorous parties and museum sessions. A huge wooden replica of a typical Kashmiri house lies on one side at the entrance, a reminder of the destruction wreaked by floods in the northern most state last year. Inside the fair, among several paintings, sculpture, video installations and photographs

was another wooden exhibit - one inspired by the terrorist attacks on Mumbai in 2008. It may take years before New Delhi can hope to match art fairs in Dubai or Hong Kong. India is an emerging market in contrast to several art markets that have stagnated. The good news is that we are at the beginning of our growth curve for the market. A successful event requires a combination of skills including creativity, artistic knowledge and understanding of setup- design. Color is a big attraction point in converting potential viewers into customers. The seventh edition of India Art Fair at NSIC Exhibition Grounds, Delhi featured at least 90 art booths by 85 exhibiting art galleries. This edition was full of art projects, showcasing, performace arts, installations and live acts. Let’s view some of the installations that were outstanding this time round:

of visual appeal through the INDIA ART FAIR.

2

PR

1

Address the problem:

It is not funny if you say it was your fault or that something wrong happened. But when you address the problem head-on, you have the chance to tell your side of the story, say you’re sorry and provide solutions and closure to the issue.

2

Public Relations:

How to prevent Crisis? By Harshita Kakar

86

Today, reputation management is as good an organization’s Google search. If your operations are solid, you have a responsive customer service team, and you run things ethically, the rest will sort itself out. But one should handle reputation of the company with utmost care. You shouldn’t leave it to sort itself out, though that is a good starting point. Maintaining the reputation of the company requires good communication, it should be strategic, thoughtful and targeted.

Preventing an issue from becoming a crisis: When you face an issue that could be turned into a crisis, remember that often it is not the story that matters it is the one who tells that story first. When you tell your side of the story, it is the best opportunity to stay in front of the issue. Take it right in your face, it may hurt for sometime but it will heal soon.

Act smartly:

You might have thought you would have to never deal with reputation management, but social media creates an environment where you have to be on your toes every second. So, quick and efficient all day. For example: An employee could put some racist comments, a customer could spread lies through Facebook page. The only way out is to be prepared and have a communication expert in your team!

3

Communication therapy:

An issue gets out of hand when your company hasn’t told their side of the story and people start speculating. This is extremely damaging to your brand. While you cannot control a story, you must provide all kind of correct facts, information and media contact numbers so that journalists can write correctly about the entire issue.

4

Right Platform:

It is very important to choose a right platform to clarify or make statements. Be it online through YouTube channels or going in the media houses. It should be relevant and to the spot.

5

Think before hand:

Everything is on a fast speed, it is the time where we live in a 24/7/365 world. But there is no excuse from thinking. You need to be sharp and quick because things happen in real time sphere.

6

Immediately Hire a PR expert:

Do not hire someone who is only active at the social media front, do not depend on that person entirely. Hire someone who is expert at handling crisis or issues. Consult a PR agency and try to associate with them.

7

Vent it out:

An issue is sometimes emotional. You might feel defensive and it is normal. If it will make you feel better, write down what you really want to say and delete!! Once you feel better. (Please delete otherwise it won’t take time in reaching in wrong hands). Let your team help you. Set them goals and duties; also give them resources and leads for follow ups.

8

Recheck: Recheck and assure your facts before someone points out a finger at you. Reassess your statements and policies.

9

Say sorry genuinely:

Of course you have to mean every word you say, especially “sorry”. And you cannot accompany it with “if an but”. When you genuinely try and inculcate sorry in your communication skills, it will come naturally and it will show that you mean it. It is very critical to the reputation of the company. 87

MARSALA: W

Style and Decor Harshita kakar writes about how Marsala can be used both in style and decor.

ith new year, comes new trends! This year color geniuses Pantone have brought us “the color of the year as Marsala!” It is the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue that Pantone calls as”earthy red wine that embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while it’s grounding red-brown roots emanates a sophisticated, earthiness.””Marsala enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, who had a hand in naming the color after drinking the fortified wine on a trip to Sicily. (Reference: Panton’s website). 92

For fashion, I can see it – a pretty marsala lip color or nail paint works for Autumn just perfectly. But for the home, well that’s a harder sell personally; nevertheless we have great options there too. Seen on the runway already during Louis Vuitton’s spring 2015 collection, we are quite sure about seeing this color dazzling the entire year. Okay then let’s get Marsala-fied!

For your home decor: In your wardrobe and beauty: This shade does wonders when combined with neutrals, includes greys and other warmer shades, because of its burnished and sultry tone, marsala is highly compatible with amber, golden, yellows, greens, turquoise and blues in a more vibrant side. Wearing marsala from head to toe would be too much, so try starting from small and focus on accessorizing. Like carrying a tote, pumping up the volume by dancing in Marsala colored pumps or wearing a poncho in cold-weather. The yummy sultry hue, is an

94

earthy mix of red and brown -- a shade that will instantly make a flattering statement, no matter what is your skin tone. If you have always clearly avoided a bold red lip, it is time to pucker up and ease yourself into the timeless trend by painting your pout in this richer marsala shade. Pair it with a gold eye shadow, or kick it up for the night by layering the color on lips with a dramatic black winged eyeliner look. Add some marsala nail art for a look that is sure to make a fashionable statement.

For the home, focus on using Marsala in your choice of leathers, metals or even for paint. It is almost a neutral shade in its own right so pairing it with white, black, ivory and glimmers of metallics which is the trendiest and glamorous way of using it. Want to shed some light on the situation? Add a pulled-together Marsala table lamp that mixes well the modern décor schemes into your home. If you’re working with other warm hues like orange, red, or brown, Marsala can cozy up more traditional spaces by adding a pop of color with single pieces such as with throws, rugs, wall art, and cushions.

1 2 3

-Marsala works in a space where the base is neutral and the lines are very classic like this elegant flat which feels very Hollywood . It looks oh so glamourous. What works here is that marsala is only used as an single color on the dining chairs. Nowhere else.

-A bold single piece. This amazingly modern space with a bright white foundation and tons of natural light is a nice place to use marsala as a single color. Yellow, blue, orange and red work great with this color. If you want to use marsala in this way, stick to a single piece and mix in other colors. Making it a happy place! -Marsala works in perfectly with rugs, have you noticed? And you can find this color in so many rugs that are sourced in Turkmenistan, Turkey, northern Afghanistan, Morocco, Uzbekistan and our India ofcourse. So, get set and paint yourself in MARSALA!! 95
