By: Jimbo So many hot topics this month. To start with, it’s hot outside! It’s hard enough to get people to support all the cruise-ins, car shows and benefits that fill up everyone's schedule. Hot weather is a lot like rain, people just want to stay inside. Sure some are diehards and they will attend as much as they can in any type of weather. But if you are putting on the show, you have to be there… so here are some tips to help you stay cool. When the temperature begins to exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit, it seems that even the world’s most violent criminals think it’s best to call it a day. “At some point when the heat becomes oppressive, crime no longer increases and starts to decline because people no longer fight the heat and they go inside," explained James Alan Fox, a professor of criminology at Northeastern University to The Wall Street Journal. Maybe they decided they didn’t want to miss out on an ideal beach day and traded in their firearms for flip-flops. After all, summer does only come once a year. Keeping your cool in warm weather isn't just about attitude––your body needs extra attention too. Risks of getting too hot in warm weather include dehydration as you go about your daily activities or overheating and risking suffering from heat stress, heat cramps or even heat exhaustion. Keeping your body cool will also help to keep your mood calm too, for heat often exacerbates feelings of stress, tension and frustration. There are lots of simple and effective ways to stay cool in warm weather and most of them are very affordable. 1. Stay out of the sun while it's at its hottest. It's best to limit your sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day during warmer months. When you are outside during these times, limit your exposure to heat by retreating to shade as much as possible and not exerting yourself. Most of all, drink plenty of water. 2. Plan ahead. Whatever you're doing outdoors, having a plan will help cut down on unnecessary activity in the heat. For example, if you're hiking, study the map at the beginning of the day and calculate the best route, especially one that makes the most of shade where possible. If you're swimming, even though water is cooling the sun will bear down on you, so figure out how long you can safely swim before needing to get out and dry off, and stick to this time limit. If you have to travel a lot during hot days in your vehicle, plan ahead by having your vehicle inspected and ensuring that your air-conditioning is in working order; also, keep a plentiful water supply on board for constant re-hydration. By having a plan, you can set time limits on your exposure to the heat and plan ways to minimize the effects of the heat before you head into it each day. Always be sure to stick to your time limits by prioritizing and leaving less important things to be finished when it's cooler. 3. Dress simply. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing will help to keep you cooler, even better if it is light in color as this will reflect the heat and

Shorts and short sleeved shirts are good choices, although a lightweight long sleeved shirt and pants are preferable if you're hiking or working outdoors for any length of time, as this provides more protection against the UV rays. Cotton clothing tends to keep you cool; be careful of synthetics as they can increase heat, although some synthetic clothes are specifically made to reduce heat (check the labels). Don't forget your head. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, as this helps to keep you cooler by providing shade. However, in extreme heat, a hat will retain heat. Try using a bandanna folded into a triangle and wrapped over your head as is often seen on bikers - this actually wicks sweat away from your head, spreads it over a large area where it evaporates and reduces your scalp temperature. And always add sunglasses. 4. Stay hydrated. Water is essential for keeping your cool during hot weather. Water keeps your body cool and should be drunk even if you don't feel thirsty. It's okay to also drink commercial waters (such as Vitamin Water) or energy drinks such as Powerade or Gatorade but they're usually not necessary unless you're deliberately replenishing lost vitamins/ electrolytes or energy following a sporting activity. Purchase a durable water bottle or water pack that you can tote everywhere and refill at any safe water tap. The best way to check your hydration level is to measure your urination frequency and color - if you haven't gone in a while, you need to drink more water and if the color is dark, you need more water. Freeze a bottle of water to carry around with you. It'll be solid when you leave the house but the heat will start melting it from the moment you take it out of the freezer and you'll benefit from the continuously chilled slowly thawing water. Stay away from sugary drinks such as sodas and do not drink alcoholic drinks. Minimize caffeinated drinks, such as tea and coffee because these tend to increase dehydration. As well as drinking water, use it to spritz yourself cool too. Fill a spray bottle with pure water and place in the refrigerator at home or work. When you feel too hot, spray a fine mist of the cooled water over face and body to help cool you down quickly. 5. Eat to stay cool. Food can keep you cool provided you make the right choices. Prefer salads, fresh raw food, vegetables and fruit. Avoid eating meat and protein-heavy foods during the heat of the day because these can increase metabolic heat production, which can add to loss of water.

6. Use fans. Whether hand-held or electric, fans can keep you cool by continuously circulating air. Paper or battery-operated fans can be used almost anywhere–at work, at home or on-the-go. Run cool water on your wrists for a few minutes and it will make you cooler! (dip your wrists into the ice cooler while your getting a that bottle of water out) And remember to keep pets cool during warm weather too––they have limited ability to cool down, especially if they're not able to leave an environment where you've enclosed them. Put ice cubes in your pets water bowl inside and especially outside to help keep your pets cool. (info from wikiHow.com)

A man is at work one day when he notices that his co-worker is wearing an earring. The man knows his co-worker to be a normally conservative fellow and is curious about his sudden change in "fashion sense." The man walks up to him and says, "I didn't know you were into earrings." "Don't make such a big deal, it's only an earring," he replies sheepishly. His friend falls silent for a few minutes, but then his curiosity prods him to ask, "So, how long have you been wearing one?" "Ever since my wife found it in my truck." Charly I always wondered how this trend got started... (Now I Know!) … ed Jimbo, Hard to believe that we just held the Fifth Annual Veterans Appreciation Fun Run. I guess that time fly's by when you're having fun. We are already looking forward to and planning the Sixth Annual Run. As you know Jimbo, the Run changes every year. This year it was from the Veterans Home in Jackson to the Home in Collins, next year will be from Jackson to Kosciusko. I would like to thank everyone who attended the 5th Annual Veterans Appreciation Fun Run. The weather was not the best, but, it did cooperate with us. At least the heaviest downpours came as we were on the road and all survived for another “classic car day”. I trust everyone enjoyed the lunch at Berry's. I know that Teresa and I did. This show is all about our Veterans. Anything we can do to bring a special day into their life is well worth it. For those of you that don't know, I actually organized this event for my father, a veteran of the North Africa and Italian

Campaigns of WW II. He loved to attend car shows with Teresa and me. When he was in the Jackson Home he told me that it looked as if his car show days were over. “Not so” I told him….”the car show will come to you”. He passed away before the first show so you can see how special this is to me. I think that the window stickers were a big hit. We are going to stay with the same design for next year but change up the color. I know that Eric Kerr wants the color to stay the same because it matched his truck color perfectly and looks great on his windshield! Our sponsors Tim and Jonathan Adams of Auto Trim did a great job designing them and Dale Harris of SignMark did an excellent printing job. Remember next year, June 25, 2016 with be our 6th Annual Run. The Run will be from Jackson to Kosciusko. Make your plans to attend and spread the word as the bigger the crowd, the more fun. Please support our sponsors any way you can as that is what makes this a free event! We did collect $630.00 to be equally divided between the two homes for their activities fund. A total of 23 vehicles attended this year! I am thinking of tee shirts next year. As always, if you have an idea or suggestion of how to improve our event, please let me know. I want to add a special thanks to all our Sponsors, the Ladies Ministry of The Word and Worship Church, Jackson and of course the most important of all, the Participants. See ya'll at the next car show…… Ollie Patterson Jimbo, Ever since I was a child, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night. So I went to a shrink and told him: “I've got problems. every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy.” “Just put yourself in my hands for one year, said the shrink. Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.” “How much do you charge?” “Eighty dollars per visit,” replied the doctor. “I'll sleep on it,” I said. Six months later the doctor met me on the street. “why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having?” he asked. “Well, eighty bucks a visit, three times a week for a year, is $12,480.00. A bartender cured me for $10.00. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup truck.” “Is that so?”; with a bit of an attitude he said, “and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?” “He told me to cut the legs off the bed. Ain't nobody under there now.” Forget the shrink have a drink & talk to a bartender it's always better to get a second opinion Jimbo, A man is dying and while lying on his death bed has His nurse, his wife, his daughter and 2 sons with him. "My daughter, Sybil, you take the apartments over in the east end." "My son, Jamie, I want you to take the offices over in the City Centre." "Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings on the banks of the river." The nurse and witnesses are blown away as they did not realize his extensive holdings, and as Doug slips away, the nurse says, "Mrs. Smith, your husband must have been such a hardworking man to have accumulated all this property". Sarah replies, "Property ? .... The #%$hole had a paper route.” Jimbo, A few years ago, my wife and I moved into a retirement development on Florida 's southeast coast. We are living in the "Delray/ Boca/ Boynton Golf, Spa, Bath and Tennis Club on Lake Fake-a-Hachee". There are 3,000 lakes in Florida; only three are real. Our biggest retirement concern was time management. What were we going to do all day? No longer. Let me assure you, passing the time is not a problem. Our days are eaten up by simple, daily activities. Just getting out of our car takes 15 minutes. Trying to find where we parked takes 20 minutes. It takes a half-hour in the check-out line in Wal-Mart, and 1 hour to return the item the next day. Let me take you through a typical day: We get up at 5:00 am, have a quick breakfast and join the early morning Walk-and-Fart Club. There are about 30 of us, and rain or shine, we walk around the streets, all talking at once. Every development has some late risers who stay in bed until 6:00 am After a nimble walk, avoiding irate drivers out to make us road kill, we go back home, shower and change for the next activity. My wife goes directly to the pool for her underwater Pilates class, followed by gasping for breath and CPR. I put on my 'Ask me about my Grandchildren' T-shirt, my plaid mid-calf shorts, my white socks and sandals and go to the clubhouse lobby for a nice nap. Before we know it, it's time for lunch. We go to Costco to partake of the many tasty samples dispensed by ladies in white hair nets. All free! After a filling lunch, if we don't have any doctor appointments, we might go to the flea market to see if any new white belts have come in or to buy a Rolex watch for $2.00. We're usually back home by 2:00 pm to get ready for dinner. People start lining up for the early bird about 3:00 pm, but we get there by 3:45 because we're late eaters. The dinners are very popular because of the large portions they serve. We can take home enough food for the next day's lunch and dinner, including extra bread, crackers, packets of mustard, relish, ketchup and Splenda, along with mints. At 5:30 pm we're home, ready to watch the 6 o'clock news. By 6:30 pm we're fast asleep. Then we get up and make five or six trips to the

bathroom during the night, and it's time to get up and start a new day all over again. Doctorrelated activities eat up most of our retirement time. I enjoy reading old magazines in sub-zero temperatures in the waiting room, so I don't mind. Calling for test results also helps the days fly by. It takes at least a half-hour just getting through the doctor's phone menu. Then there's the hold time until we're connected to the right party. Sometimes they forget we're holding, and the whole office goes off to lunch. Should we find we still have time on our hands, volunteering provides a rewarding opportunity to help the less fortunate. Florida has the largest concentration of seniors under five feet and they need our help. I myself am a volunteer for 'The Vertically Challenged Over 80.' I coach their basketball team, The Arthritic Avengers. The hoop is only 4-1/2 feet from the floor. You should see the look of confidence on their faces when they make a slam dunk. Food shopping is a problem for short seniors, or 'bottom feeders' as we call them, because they can't reach the items on the upper shelves. There are many foods they've never tasted. After shopping, most seniors can't remember where they parked their cars and wander the parking lot for hours while their food defrosts. Lastly, it's important to choose a development with an impressive name. Italian names are very popular in Florida . They convey world travelers, uppity sophistication and wealth. Where would you rather live: Murray 's Condos or the Lakes of Venice? There's no difference -- they're both owned by Murray, who happens to be a cheap bastard. I hope this material has been of help to you future retirees. If I can be of any further assistance, please look me up when you're in Florida. I live in the Leaning Condos of Pisa in Boynton Beach . Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what the hell happened! Charly Miller Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a gift from God

Hunter was 4 years old and was staying with his grandfather for a few days. He'd been playing outside with the other kids, when he came into the house and asked, 'Grandpa, what's that called when two people sleep in the same bedroom and one is on top of the other?' His Grandpa was a little taken aback, but he decided to tell him the truth. 'Well, Hunter, it's called sexual intercourse.’ ‘Oh,’ Little Hunter said, 'OK,' and went back outside to play with the other kids. A few minutes later he came back in and said angrily, 'Grandpa, it isn't called sexual intercourse. It's called Bunk Beds. And Jimmy’s mom wants to talk to you.'

Jimbo, I bought the 1928 Ford Coupe in May 2007. It was an original all-steel body and was kept in that shape until February 2013. I then decided to make some major modifications to the '28. I had the car completely stripped down. The frame was boxed in and fitted for a 350 Chevy crate engine with a 650 Holly 4-barrel carburetor. We added a Walker aluminum radiator and an electric fan. The transmission is a 700 R-4 overdrive with a 9" Ford rear-end. The '28 coupe has a Heidts Mustang II suspension kit complete with a tubular Mustang II power rack and pinion. It has a '54 Chevy Bel-Air gauge-set with VDO gauges. Installed was a Hurst Quiksilver Flo -Master shifter. This car has interior and exterior LED lights. Wood beams were removed from the top and replaced with a full metal roof which includes an extra-large sun-roof. Air shocks were installed on the rear. The Ford Coupe originally had one tail-light. We added an additional tail-light and dual Flo-Master exhaust with Hooker Headers including (Jet-hot coating). The underside of the body was coated with bedliner coating. Mazer Industries in Mobile, Al powder coated the frame. All the original glass has been replaced with tinted glass by Bozant Glass Shop Inc., in Irvington, Al. Tilt steering has been added with a customized Grant steering wheel. The coupe has a Gen 4 Vintage 4 AC and windshield wipers. The interior and rumble seat compartment was customized by DIXIE SEAT COVER, INC. in Pascagoula, Ms DIXIE SEAT COVER did a superb job! The customizing and modifications took over 2 years and I am totally satisfied how well it all came together. This 1928 Coupe is ready for road-trips featuring car events, cruise-ins, etc. Buzzy Broadus Grand Bay,AL

When was the last time you had real down south cooking. On July 2nd we went to Ms Audrey's on the corner of 30th Ave and 17th street. Gulfport, MS. There have been several restaurants in this building. I hope this one stays around for a long time. Breakfast is same in some ways and different in others. Instead of sausage gravy for biscuits they have a chicken gravy that is real good. Potatoes are the pan fried with just a touch of onion. they have a breakfast rice, kind of like a dirty rice. The Stormy Breakfast Special are something complete different you need to pick up a take out menu for them. There is a different menu for each day of the week like, Monday red beans, rice w/ ham hocks. Tuesday, smothered liver, pork neck bones. Wed. smothered pork chops. Thursday ox tails, fried chicken. Friday is fish and shrimp. Also on Friday's they have specials, here again you need to look on the take out menu. The restaurant is close on Saturday but open on Sunday. There are 15 side items you can pick from, but only on Sunday can you get collard greens and corn bread dressing (Tuesday also). If that isn't enough you have 8 desserts, 4 sandwiches and 3 salads. Did you know that Birmingham, Alabama native Mary Anderson invented the first workable windshield wiper? As the story goes, on a freezing, wet winter day around the turn of the century, Mary Anderson was riding a streetcar on a visit to New York City when she noticed that the driver could hardly see through his sleetencrusted front windshield. Although the trolley's front window was designed for bad-weather visibility-it was split into parts so that the driver could open it, moving the snow- or rain-covered section out of his line of vision-in fact the multi-pane windshield system worked very poorly. It exposed the driver's uncovered face (not to mention all the passengers sitting in the front of the trolley) to the inclement weather, and did not improve his ability to see where he was going in any case. Anderson began to sketch her wiper device right there on the streetcar. After a number of false starts, she came up with a prototype that worked: a set of wiper arms that were made of wood and rubber and attached to a lever near the steering wheel of the drivers' side. When the driver pulled the lever, she dragged the spring-loaded arm across the window and back again, clearing away raindrops, snowflakes or other debris. When winter was over, Anderson's wipers could be removed and stored until the next year. (This feature was presumably designed to appeal to people who lived in places where it did not rain in the summertime.) People scoffed at Anderson's invention, saying that the wipers' movement would distract the driver and cause accidents. Anderson tried to sell it to a Canadian manufacturing firm, but the company refused: The device had no practical value, it said, and so was not worth any money. Her patent expired before she could entice anyone to use her idea. Reprint from: Mississippi Classic Cruisers - July 2015 Newsletter

Jimbo: The State Tax Commission intends to tax all car show proceeds, even if the sponsoring club is a non-profit. The car clubs of Mississippi needs to fight this decision (which you can bet was made by one bureaucrat at the Tax Comm). You might pass this onto other clubs. I'll send you the article in this weekends paper. Mike ---------Original message ---------From: Mike Martin Date: Mon, Jul 13, 2015 Subject: Corvette Show/Ms Sate Tax Commission I got a call Friday from Pam Ware about the tax situation with the State. She said they were going to tax not only your vendors but also the Club. I told her that could not be right but she WAS right. You saw the article in the paper Sunday. This decision to tax the money paid by the participants and the paying spectators by the State Tax Comm is not fair and I think we need to fight it, as it is going to impact ALL non-profit car clubs trying to raise $ for charity. Now these are just my thoughts and I have not talked to anyone on the MCC Board about what I think. However, I don't think we can just lie down and get run over by these people. Maybe someone like Tom or Sam could advise us on what options we have. These are just my preliminary thoughts so advise me what you think. I am going to send this to the MCC Board as well as George Raworth of the Antique Vehicle club. Thanks, Mike

Corvette show wrangles with tax man Geoff Pender, The Clarion-Ledger - July 10, 2015 Organizers of Saturday’s 2015 Mississippi Corvette Classic car show in Jackson were unhappy after being informed for the first time in eight years they’ll have to collect and pay sales taxes. “We raise money for charity every year,” said Tom Gerity, vice president and treasurer of the Mississippi Corvette Club and a retired lawyer. “This is the first year we’ve ever been told this.” (Photo: Greg Jenson/The Clarion-Ledger) The car show, held at the Jackson Convention Complex for five of its eight years, is raising money for the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi with this year’s show. The Corvette Club is a registered 501(c)(7) nonprofit social club, exempt from federal and state income taxes, and the Diabetes Foundation is a registered taxexempt charity. Last year, Gerity said, the show grossed about $20,000, with about $13,000 going to the Make-A-Wish charity after expenses. But state Department of Revenue spokeswoman Kathy Waterbury said the Corvette Club isn’t exempt from paying a 4-percent event sales tax on admissions and vendors at the show must pony up the 7-percent sales tax, with the organizer responsible for collecting. Waterbury said DOR has been working more closely with venues such as the Convention Complex to identify groups who should be paying sales taxes for events. Gerity said the show should be exempt from state sales taxes. “They’ve told me I have to serve as an uncompensated deputy tax collector,” Gerity said. “They’re demanding I collect sales taxes from all the vendors here. They’re wanting a 3-percent tax on the $5 donation we request at the door when you come in the show, plus 1 percent to the city of Jackson. Then, we have a fee of $40 for cars to be in the show, and they want taxes from that. A nonprofit civic organization is not subject to taxes on admissions.” Waterbury said there are many exemptions for events held by churches and other civic clubs, but that the car club does not qualify. She said she would not provide specifics about “a taxpayer” on why the club doesn’t qualify. “The promoter in this case did not meet the definition required in law for exemption,” Waterbury said. “… Unless you are specifically exempt by law, an admission tax is due, even if you call it a donation but require it for people who enter.” Gerity said a $5 donation is suggested at the door, but that if anyone refused to pay it, they’d still be allowed in. State law provides many sales tax exemptions for events, including those held by a religious or civic organization with proceeds “used solely for religious, charitable, educational or civic purposes.” There are sales tax exemptions in Mississippi law for public school events and sports, gospel singing events, professional baseball games, garden pilgrimages and symphony orchestra performances. But, apparently, not for Corvette car clubs and shows. “We looked carefully to make sure there was not an applicable exemption,” Waterbury said. “… If the Diabetes Foundation was the promoter here, they would qualify.” Gerity was perturbed the club had to provide DOR a $500 bond on Friday “I guess to make sure we collect the taxes.” Gerity said: “We give every cent of what we get to charity. This is not right.” Contact Geoff Pender at (601) 961-7266 or gpender@jackson.gannett.com. Follow @GeoffPender on Twitter.

Sinkhole Survivor: Restoration Begins On Millionth Corvette Story by John Coyle While every car that plunged into the hole was important in its own right, the millionth Corvette produced held a special place in the hearts of the folks at GM, and right now, the staff of its Mechanical Assembly center is painstakingly bringing the production milestone back to life. As you may know, there was hardly a surface of the car that was untouched in the plunge, but luckily, the signatures of the workers who built it were on the inside of the panels, and remained relatively intact. There's no estimate on when the car will be completed, but don’t be surprised to see it at this year's SEMA show in November, perhaps alongside the 1962 model being restored by the National Corvette Museum in-house. September Old Town Spring, TX 32nd Annual Longhorn Rod Run features classic cars in a historical setting. Vintage car lovers can step back in time walking the streets talking to the antique car owners and getting a chance to peak underneath the hoods. Various categories for prizes and awards are given to owners of the hot rods that line the shady shop lined streets. This truly is a local favorite.

While many members of Mississippi Classic Cruisers were touring the Nissan plant in Canton, I was touring another automotive manufacturer. However, this plant was very different and the production numbers are MUCH smaller. How small you ask? Only 200 cars are produced in a year. The name of the company is Dallara. Never hear of them? They make race cars and compete in all F3 championships around the world. They are the sole supplier of cars to the IndyCar, Indy Lights, GP2, GP3, World Series by Renault and Japanese Super Formula championships. In 2012, the company opened an engineering center in Indianapolis, that produces and assembles the IndyCar of the future.

The factory is just steps away from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Inside you can explore 20,000 square feet of interactive and hands-on exhibits centered around the engineering and technology of the world’s fastest sport - IndyCar! The Interactive Zone includes completely interactive and hands-on race themed displays. Hands-on exhibits teach the science and technology behind IndyCar. Touch-Screen monitors throughout the facility break down the engineering of a race car. Wind tunnel models show the application of aerodynamics while carbon fiber experiments result in stiffer, lighter and safer race cars. In one section, you can even get behind the wheel of full car simulators and see who in your group can lay down the fastest qualifying lap! In The Pit Experience, you can change a tire on a real Indycar. After a couple of practice runs, you get a timed run. My time was 7.47 seconds which was second fastest in our group but not fast enough to get a job in the pits on race day! To top all this off, I strapped on a helmet and climbed into a stretched production Dellara Indy car for a ride on the streets around the factory! The Street-Legal IndyCar 2 seater is the first of its kind to ever run on city streets just like a regular car. It is fully equipped with headlights, taillights, turn signals and is also plated by the state of Indiana, otherwise it is the same car that they use on the speedway. Though we did not get up to race speeds, on a private road we did get up to about 85MPH. Let me tell you that sitting 3” off the ground and being thrown back into your seat by the acceleration G’s, it seemed much faster. If you are ever in Indianapolis, this is something you do not want to miss! Reprint from: Mississippi Classic Cruisers - July 2015 Newsletter

We had a great turnout 140+ cars and lots of support at our benefit cruise-in for Leroy today. Lots of excellent food and great friends showed up from several parts of Louisiana, the whole coast of Mississippi and several groups from inland Mississippi. It's a good thing when we show and help raise funds for those in need. Remember anything can happen to anyone of us at any time, and we could be the one needing the helping hand. Thanks again for the help/support. To the Misfits, the team work and volunteer members working together was second to none. Thank y'all for the hard work for our friend. On a side note we had two people with medical issues that were givin only several months to live and they were there supporting Leroy and the club. The Cole Report. Ok Jimbo time for this months Cole Report. The last cruise-in we finished up with was the Misfits Street Krewzers hosted a benefit cruise-in for Leroy Johns we had fantastic support with almost 150 cruisers showing up. On a sad note we did loose two fellow cruisers recently with the passings of Eddie Oatis and Leroy Johns both long time cruisers and old time drag racers. The coast also had a second big event for the month with Scrapin The Coast at the Biloxi Coliseum. Always a good event which grows every year, well over 2500 custom vehicles there's always something different to see, always a good time hanging with Dennis, Richard, Jimbo and trying to stay outta trouble. Remember get out and cruise, see y'all somewhere or everywhere.

It's been a hot and busy summer, here's a few pictures from the Pass Pavilion cruise-in.

Then the city of Gulfport hosted the Hot Rod Power tour this was a big event for the entire Coast with almost 4000 cars on site and thousands of visitors.

The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year. http://www.streetrod101.com/safety-inspection.html

Eddie Oatis, 75, passed away on May 28th. It was a sad day for his cruising family and friends. He and his wife Patty were married 53 years. They have 2 sons and 1 daughter. Eddie and Dolton Carlett built his car - a beautiful blue '32 Ford Vickie. It took 3 to 5 years to finish and they enjoyed it for 12 more years. They loved to cruise in it, and they also used it as an everyday driver. When they went to the grocery shore to shop, Patty could take her time because Eddie would stay in the parking lot - talking to whoever would listen about his car. Eddie loved telling stories for as long as anybody would listen. They worked Cruisin' the Coast in Ocean Springs for about 6 years, but they stopped when it became too hard on Eddie. But they didn't miss a Cruisin' the Coast event and made all the car shows and cruise-ins they could. The cruise-in at Edgewater Mall on May 2nd was the last event he got to enjoy. He was the type of man that even at the end of his life, he wanted to have a 'Celebration of Life,' which he called his "Shindig." Patty surely did it up in style. His family and friends supported him during his last Shindig Cruise-In. Thank you, Patty, for sharing this day with us. Donna Holland

Thank you to all our cruiser friends for supporting our recent fundraiser. It went great. We were able to purchase a new snowcone machine like they wanted. Our Residents are enjoying these sweet frozen treats on these hot summer days along with our staff. Also thank you to JR and Sharon for coming out and joining our residents for a snowball. Have a great summer, keep Cruizin until we meet again. Sincerely, Dee Dee, Activity Director.

Motoring Mascots It was almost certainly the mascot (hood ornament) that man first imagined as an accessory to the automobile. About 1912 someone thought it might be nice for a driver to know the status of the water temperature in the radiator, thus was born the Motometer, or Calorimeter. The cars did not have water pumps. The Calorimeter featured a glass enclosed radiator thermometer mounted between a pair of outstretched wings. The automakers soon wanted gauges with the manufacturers name and logo on the radiator cap. The flood of “approved” mascots didn’t come until the 1920’s. In most cases their design was chosen to convey the feeling of speed or endurance. Thus birds, especially the eagle, and mythological characters and beasts were particular favorites. Soon most automakers offered an approved mascot as standard equipment or a deluxe accessory. It seemed as though the automakers immediately went into competition to see who could concoct the most elaborate and exotic three-dimensional sculptures and designs. These sculptures reflected the different art styles of the time. Very often motorcar owners preferred one of their own designs which more specifically reflected their taste or lifestyle, after all, this was a constant companion to the driver. Mascot quality ranged from fine works of art in bronze, silver and glass to the cheap and nasty. Streamline automobile design spelled the death of the mascot and by 1942 it was gone except in a few instances. The next time you are admiring a classic auto from this time period, be certain to study the hood ornament. Last week I visited the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan. If you have ever toured this museum you know how special it is. If you have not ever stopped at this facility, you need to put it on your list of things to do. It is jaw-dropping. Plan an entire day to tour this 90 acre marvel. (I was there from 9 am until 5 pm on a Tuesday, and returned on Wednesday.) There is a large display of hood ornaments or mascots in the Classic Car Club of America Museum barn as well as an entire building dedicated to these works of art on the grounds of the Gilmore Car Museum. There are over 1500 hood ornaments behind glass for viewing, not counting the ones on cars. I could not begin to do justice to the exhibit there…you will have to investigate on your own.

THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES: (If you don't even know what clotheslines are, better skip this.) 1. You had to hang the socks by the toes... NOT the top. 2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs... NOT the waistbands. 3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging any clothes Walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the lines. 4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first. 5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by the tail! What would the neighbors think? 6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven's sake! 7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle (perverts & busybodies, y'know!) 8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather... clothes would "freeze-dry." 9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were "tacky"! 10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with the next washed item. 11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed. IRONED??!! Well, that's a whole OTHER subject! 12. Long wooden pole (clothes pole) that was used to push the clotheslines up so that longer items (sheets/pants/etc.) didn't brush the ground and get dirty. And now a POEM... A clothesline was a news forecast, To neighbors passing by, There were no secrets you could keep, When clothes were hung to dry. It also was a friendly link, For neighbors always knew If company had stopped on by, to spend a night or two. For then you'd see the "fancy sheets", And towels upon the line; You'd see the "company table cloths", With intricate designs. The line announced a baby's birth, From folks who lived inside, As brand new infant clothes were hung, So carefully with pride! The ages of the children could, So readily be known By watching how the sizes changed, You'd know how much they'd grown! It also told when illness struck, As extra sheets were hung; Then nightclothes, and a bathrobe too, Haphazardly were strung. It also said, "On vacation now", When lines hung limp and bare. It told, "We're back!" when full lines sagged, With not an inch to spare! New folks in town were scorned upon, If wash was dingy and gray, As neighbors carefully raised their brows, And looked the other way. But clotheslines now are of the past, For dryers make work much less. Now what goes on inside a home, Is anybody's guess! I really miss that way of life, It was a friendly sign When neighbors knew each other best... By what hung on the line. We are probably the last generation that will remember what a clothesline was. . And in lots of places they are illegal. Sent in by giff1500@

The Grim Reaper Knocks and The Stork delivers two… The 17 FOREVER state of mind is all about being invincible and immortality. When you’re young you think you are going to live forever and you try to hold on to it. Somewhere along the line, we get a wakeup call. Anything to do with the heart is a wakeup call. High Blood Pressure… dealing with it. Borderline diabetic… dealing with it. Cholesterol… dealing with it. Heart…wait a minute, do what? During a routine physical my doctor asked me if I had had a work up on my heart, with my family history. My answer No. Then I get that creepy feeling my genes are catching up with me. The doctor ordered a stress test. The stress test came back positive for blockage in my heart. BLOCKAGE IN MY HEART? What the heck does that mean Doc? Won’t know until we get in there? GET IT THERE? Yes, we’re scheduling you an angioplasty-stint, when you want to do it? I say… the sooner the better and believe me when I say “I WAS FREAKED OUT inside, no one but me knew how freaked out I really was. I get to the hospital early, they start an IV, they gave me the feel good shot and I come to in a recovery type room. I learned that I had a 90% blockage, which they stinted and a 50% blockage they giving me medicine for and will watch. The toughest thing was to lay flat for 6 hours. I can’t lay on my back, I have to sleep on one side or the other, so they gave me morphine for my back. I had the best nurses and care that day and overnight. My sense of invincibility really took a hit. My dad died of a heart attack at 50. I’m 57 so I’m looking at life a little different. I felt like the Grimm Reaper knocked…ever so lightly. I’m really glad we caught my heart before a heart attack. If you’re getting up in age, please get the stress test, it probably saved my life. While all that is going on…my family is getting ready for two new additions. You are going to love this story…My son Jason and his wife Michelle were trying hard to have a child. Both had grown children from previous marriages, but they wanted one together. They tried so hard for over three years… nothing. I mean they were serious, almost scary. Well they finally decided to adopt…in China. My son’s boss had adopted 4 kids and kind of walked him through it. Very expensive and about a year and a half process. Well into the adoption, after the pressure came off Michelle got pregnant…she was so pregnant she couldn’t travel to China to get the little girl when the time finally came. So Scotty, my wife had to step in. She has been gone for 15 days and after 33 years I’ve learned that I’m not a good bachelor any more. Scotty had never been gone more than a weekend to see relatives. Scotty and Jason have some stories to tell. The very rich and the unbelievably poor. Jason said when they landed in Beijing there were billions and billions and billions of folks at the airport. He said you have never seen so many people. The flight was 15 plus hours and the food was terrible. They ate four times on the plane. The first city they visited smelled so bad, open sewage, but beautiful buildings, streets, parks and gardens out of this world. The rich next to the poor, but you can’t see the poor, beautiful walls and fences keep them out of sight. From the hotel room eight floors up you could see into the slums. There is no middle class in China. Rich and very, very poor…that’s it.

14

AUGUST 2015

While the world travelers were away…Michelle had the baby. Beautiful little boy, Chase… 7 lbs. 8 ounces. And of course Scotty and Jason picked up Camryn in China. They traveled all over the country, doing this legal thing and that. Each day they had a mission. There are very few rules of the road in China. Cars, mopeds, bicycles all together driving all over the place, no order, no rules, no speed limit. Passing both sides of you and on the sidewalks. Intersections were amazing without traffic rules and so many people. And Cam… Scotty said Cam is the friendliest person she things she’s ever met. Cam doesn’t speak much English yet and she is 4 years old. I’m holding the column until I pick them up at the airport in New Orleans, so you can come along as I meet my fifth grandchild for the first time. I am so excited!!! Hot Rod classes will be starting soon for them! Did I say I was excited?

Well, the birthday is over 7/24/27 and I racked up 88 years! Everything still works, but not as often, or as well. August reminds me of the death of Tim Richmond, one of the few NASCAR drivers I liked. He cashed in his chips on August 13th 1989. His NASCAR ride was the Folgers Coffee Chevrolet that was owned by Rick Hendrick, prominent NASCAR owner. For the record, that last year, he ran the #25 for two wins at Pocono and Riverside, he completed 8 of the 29 races that year, won 2 major victories of the 8. News reports stated he was hospitalized for pneumonia! After his death, the reports (probably an Autopsy) stated death due to complications of the aids virus.

His 1st year at Indy 500 he was voted "rookie" of the year. During his driving career he was listed as winning 2 million $ total. You readers that like this column should hit Autoracingmemories.com, and there are some great articles by various writers, including Mitch who writes volumes on dirt racing, midgets, sprints, and more! Time to tell you about "Mt. Angel Mike" from my home town of Salem, Oregon. Its 1946, I'd done my time in WWII, South Pacific (Okinawa) Seabees, and now I'm looking for a car, (fast car). One of my best friends was Roy Holbrook, and he tells me "Mt Angel Mike" has 1934 Ford up for sale! It was very fast, and Roy tells me "It has a 3/4 grind "Winfield" cam in it!" I sure got interested in a hurry. Roy knew his engines, and later on he was engine man on one of those racing boats that drag race, and have Keith Black Chrysler Engines in them. Anyway Roy & I go up to the little town of Mt Angel, (35 miles North of Salem,) and I purchase the car for $175.00. It was Ford Black, and Mike had painted the louvered side panels of the hood white. I Immediately painted out the white with "Rattle Can" black paint, and "Mt. Angel Mike" no longer had the fastest Ford in town! Roy had shown me how to "Speed Shift" from low to 2nd gear, (leaving your foot on the gas pedal wide open as you shifted from low to 2nd). About 3 months later, after beating all the fast cars in town, the rear main gave up and was leaking oil real bad. You remember the rod bearings and mains were "poured" in 1934 don't you? I sold the car to "Junior" (don't remember his last name) he would get his parents 1941 Ford (ugly) and come out and race it at night. None of the guys knew anything about speed shifting, and "Junior" claimed his "3

16

AUGUST 2015

on the tree" was the reason I kept beating him! So I told him to come out, and I would drive his `41 and he would drive my `34. The 3 on the column was much easier and faster than the floor shift `34. That was the only time my 34 was ever beat, but it sure did make my reputation as a driver! Later I sold the 34 (bad main bearing and all) and bought a `40 Ford Coupe from one of the Salems Police officers. I've owned all the 1940 Ford body styles but no trucks. The coupe & the convertible were my 2 favorites. I'll never forget the 1949 "Rocket Engine" Oldsmobile! That was Mr. Kettering's engine, and it was in a Chevy body with olds grill and different chrome strips on trunk and sides. Kettering was chief of Olds Engineering and spent years putting that engine together! The first Daytona 500 had 5 or 6 Olds in it. My racing friend Johnny Mantz won the race in a Plymouth, 6 laps over 2nd place!

The racers has been running on the beach road course (dirt) and had no idea what asphalt can do to tires at 90 to 100 mph. As I mentioned in earlier columns, Johnny was a Indy 500 driver, went to Firestone, and got tires made to go 500 laps and only pitted for gas! Just to touch on Americans and racing unusual facts, in 1956 (the year I was with the #41 car) at Indy the Formula 1 racing group invited the top 10 finishers at Indy to come over to Monza, Italy and race in the "circular bowl" asphalt track that had 30` banks! USAC Indy 500 (United States Auto Club) accepted the offer and shipped 10 cars over to Monza. When they got there, the Formula 1 officials held a meeting with the USAC members and cautioned them not to go above the white line painted 3/4 of the way up all around the track! Somebody asked "whats the track record"? 165 mph. was the answer. Well Tony Bettenhausn got in the "Novi", you remember the Novi don't you? Warmed up below the white line, then "stood on it" above the white line, turned 201, 198 and then came back in. The next day, Mercedes, Farrari, Maserati, pulled out and declined to run. At the finish of the race, the 1st 7 cars were American. MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS BE AT YOUR BACK KEEP IT BETWEEN THE FENCES Larry Dunham - 228-671-6216 Email usaclarry@Yahoo.com

When we daydream about summer, we often envision sun, sand, barbecues, outdoor family fun, maybe a trip or 2 and whether you are a man or woman, thoughts about swimsuit season. Men think of it with anticipation of dames wearing less clothing while women either start shopping to find the cutest new swimsuit or gasp! With dread about finding the most flattering ensemble and getting swimsuit-ready! Summertime in Florida is filled with beaches and longer days of fun on the water; Waterskiing, boating, fishing, and sunbathing, just like it was 50 years ago. Even the infamous first group of astronauts and their wives spent their time enjoying the Florida flamingos and palm trees of the land of sand.

country, anyone caught wearing outrageous beach attire was subject to suit regulations and checked to measure the distance from the knee to the bottom of the suit. A far cry from today! On July 5, 1946, the first bikini was introduced. French designer Louis Reard unveiled the daring two-piece swimsuit at a popular Paris swimming pool. Reard was unable to find a fashion model willing to wear such an immodest design, so Parisian nude showgirl Micheline Bernardini modeled the new fashion instead. The bikini was a hit, especially among men, and Bernardini received some 50,000 fan letters.

Victorian era “bathing machines” As times have changed, beach-going tourists' swimwear has had quite the evolution of its own. In 1825, swim suits were not even remotely practical as modesty was of the most importance. Women wore full bathing dresses at the beach. A Victorian contraption, called the bathing machine, was used for the women to put on their swimming clothes. Then horses would pull the cart into the surf so that women could take a dip

In the early 1900s the Olympic Games recognized swimming as a sport so the suits became streamlined for greater mobility. At beaches across the

European women began wearing the two-piece bathing suits in the 1930s, over a decade earlier. However, the navel was still covered as the suits only showed a sliver of the midriff. In prudish America, the bikini was successfully resisted until the early 1960s, when a new emphasis on youthful liberation brought the most popular swimsuit ever to U.S. beaches.

1953 Key Lime Festival in Key Largo! The Florida Keys is famous for their Key Lime Pie, which of course was first created right there in the Keys. Marilyn Monroe wearing her bikini in 1946 Reard dubbed the tiny ensemble “bikini,” inspired by a news-making U.S. atomic test that took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean earlier that week. He chose the name to imply it was as momentous an invention as the new bomb. From then on, attractive women were known as "bombshells" and anything intense was "atomic." A total of 30 square inches of fabric were used to make the provocative new fashion. It was immortalized by the pop singer Brian Hyland, who sang “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini” in 1960, by Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon's hit teenage “beach blanket” movies and by the California

Along with enthusiastic swimmers descending upon popular beaches in Panama City, Daytona and Miami, Florida has always been home to theme parks. Before the doors of Walt Disney World, Busch Gardens, Universal Studios and Sea World opened, Cypress Gardens was Florida's first commercial theme park.

Farrah Fawcett was the swimsuit icon of the 70s. Her famous poster wearing a rust-colored one piece bathing suit adorned many a teenager's bedroom. Since then, the popularity of the bikini has only continued to grow. The evolution of the bathing suit reflects society's attitude towards swimming, modesty and sensuality. Bikinis have prevailed in pop culture for their iconic roles, ranging from the notorious Bond girls to the everpopular Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue! German model Babette March graced the first ever Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover in January of 1964 wearing a white bikini. As a result, the trend of bikini-clad beauties on magazine covers began.

Growing up in Florida, my favorite attraction was Weeki Wachee Springs. While most kids wanted to spend their days at Disney, I was mermaid obsessed and dreamed of spending every birthday and vacation at the only home of live mermaids.

Nestled about an hour north of Tampa, Weeki Wachee Springs State Park features a natural, fresh water spring with a small water amusement park, Buccaneer Bay, river boat rides, an animal show and most importantly, an underwater arena where mermaid

shows have been performed for almost 60 years. The park still has a more relaxed, laid back atmosphere that channels the simplistic vintage Florida lifestyle. It is the perfect stop on a retro road trip. The park's creation began in 1946 when former U. S. Navy man Newton Perry decided to build an 18-seat theater into the limestone submerged 6 feet below the springs' surface so that viewers could see into the crystal clear spring. Having trained US Seals to swim underwater in WWII, he then scouted pretty girls and trained them to drink, eat and do aquatic ballets underwater. Perry invented a method of breathing underwater from a free-flowing hose, which was hidden in the scenery. The hose supplied oxygen from an air compressor instead of a tank, giving the appearance of life underwater without air. During the 1950s it was a top tourist spot. Movies like Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid were filmed there and more recently Paris Hilton's hit reality TV show, The Simple Life. It has continued to be a spot for filming movies, TV shows, music videos and commercials. Celebrities like Elvis, Don Knotts and even The Million Dollar Mermaid herself, Esther Williams, came to Weeki Wachee. The city of live mermaids currently houses a 500-seat, underwater theater so there is plenty of room to bring the whole family by for a visit.

Vintage photo of the famous pier in St. Petersburg, Florida

Famous film and swimming star Esther Williams was a popular vintage star for her series of “aquamusical films in the 40s and 50s. Williams had achieved pinup status because of the many photographs of her in bathing suits. Many of her MGM films, such as Million Dollar Mermaid and Jupiter's Darling, contained elaborately staged, synchronized swimming scenes featuring her beautiful swimsuits. The suits were not practical and she soon leant her name to a line of vintage swimsuits and discovered more practical, new types of swimsuits that were then used by the United States Navy. Swimming fashion may have changed, but summertime fun has remained the same. Enjoy the rest of your summer with a stop at the beach for sun, surf and sand.

(Continued from page 30)

OCTOBER 2015 Cruisin’ The Coast® began in 1996 as a festival to celebrate antique, classic and hot rod vehicles, nostalgic music and related events. 374 vehicles registered that first year and in 2014 we had 7,293 registered vehicles. Car enthusiasts from 41 states plus Canada and Sweden drive to the Mississippi Gulf Coast once a year to showcase their rides and to cruise our beautiful 30-mile stretch of beachside highway with designated stops in Bay St. Louis, Biloxi, D’Iberville, Gulfport, Pass Christian and Ocean Springs. Each venue is set up as a mini festival with a stage for live bands, reserved parking for registered cruisers, spectator parking, and vendors for food and event merchandise. Registered cruisers will receive an ID card in their registration packets to exhibit all week in their car’s front window; this ID allows entry into the venues where reserved parking is available. A program with maps will also be part of the registration packet so cruisers can plan their individual schedules as this is an open cruise – events are scheduled and you decide which ones you are interested in attending. Our week long event includes cruise-ins, a Salute To Our Veterans event, car auction, swap meet, car corral, and a parade. Spectators are welcome and will find that our cruisers love to talk “old cars.” Cruisin’ The Coast® has 12 Host Car Clubs providing over 700 volunteers who help with registering vehicles, directing cars at the venues, giving directions, and welcoming our guests. These are just the jobs cruisers see. There are hundreds of behind the scenes and pre-event activities that our volunteers help with all year long. When you see someone in a bright yellow staff shirt – that is a fellow car lover who is donating time to make this a fun event for all. If you get a chance you may want to say thank you to a volunteer during your visit. Cruisin’ The Coast® has become the biggest special event in the state of Mississippi. As Cruisin’ The Coast® has grown, the honors and awards have followed suit. Cruisin’ The Coast® received the Governor’s Excellence in Tourism Award as Festival/Event of the Year in the State of Mississippi (by Jarvis Brannon). Cruisin’ The Coast® was also named the recipient of the “Shining Example Award” for Best Festival/Event of the year by the Southeast Tourism Society, one of the “100 Events for the Year” for 2001 and in 2011 by the American Bus Association and was also named a Southern Travel Treasure by AAA’s magazine, AAA Southern Traveler. In 2007, the Automotive Restoration Market named Cruisin’ The Coast the 2007 Restoration Event of the Year. We want to thank all of our volunteers, sponsors, participating vendors, and you, the car enthusiasts, who have made Cruisin’ The Coast® the success story it is. Join us on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, October 4-11, 2015 for the 19th Annual Cruisin’ The Coast® featuring all your favorite activities like cruise-ins, headline bands & oldies entertainment, a swap meet, the CTC/Vicari Auto Auction and much more! Book your rooms through MS Gulf Coast Hotel Reservations at 1-888-3881006 and receive a FREE Window Decal! Cruisers Plan Ahead: Future Dates for Cruisin’ The Coast® Many of you like to plan ahead for future events by marking calendars and making room reservations. Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine is proud to show off Jana going to the beach with this gorgeous 1969 Camaro Convertible supplied by Automotive Painters Supply (automotivepainterssupply.net) which you’ll find in 5 convenient locations along the Gulf Coast. The store, that is, not the Camaro or Jana. Describing this tight, gorgeous, solid Camaro is about like describing Jana. A big part of its special beauty is the billet everywhere: functional, direct, substantive, also flowing with purpose. The 9x18 front and 10x18 rear, rims, are Billet Specialty. The taillights are billet, as are the pedals, the door hinges, the Green Brothers door handles, the shifter, the hood hinges, and that’s just what we can see. Inside where purposeful strength counts even more, it’s got billet suspension from Chris Austin, a 4-link adjustable set with a new ride height (better than just “lowered”). More hidden magic includes the FAST (Fuel, Air, Spark Technology) Fuel Injection and 3-inch exhaust for the LS-2 motor with Tremec 16 transmission to handle the power, estimated at about 600 hp. The tasty interior details are crafted by Mark West and it includes a video screen with Bluetooth. Probably the most significant visible feature is the special color-matched orange top. Most 69 Camaros had boring white tops. Being an Automotive Painters Supply car, you can be sure the paint job on this one is the best ever, and it is, with PPG base coat and clear coat, looking deep enough you could just sink your arm in to it.

Ya know cars and bikes are a big distraction to all the crap I should be paying attention today..like bein’ politically correct, yeah right! Ya gotta be careful of what you say when your out on the town or else…..cause ya might hurt somebody's feelins... that way they can sue ya’ Seems like the quickest way to get the lawdogs to put a bracelet on you is get in a discussion about bein’ an American citizen and how God n’ Country somehow go together! Especially when your in a room full of people who want to give away your money. I use to watch a lot of TV when the kids were little and lived at home..guess some of them shows were inappropriate for them to watch like Archie Bunker or MASH and movies about fighting for our country, of course I’d tell them about every cowboy movie I ever saw an how John Wayne was the best..but today all ya gotta’ do is turn on the news to get it all at one time. The news is the new verity show, full of actors tryin to make a name for themselves in one way or another. Cops an robbers goin’ at it, lawsuit’s for everything, nobody behaven’ like they should, leaders telling us how we should just give up all the things you were brought up believing, because it’s a new day. Help save our country….VOTE Professor : You are a Christian, aren't you, son ? Student : Yes, sir. Professor: So, you believe in GOD ?... Student : Absolutely, sir. Professor : Is GOD good ? Student : Sure. Professor: Is GOD all powerful ? Student : Yes. Professor: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to GOD to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn't. How is this GOD good then? Hmm? (Student was silent.) Professor: You can't answer, can you ? Let's start again, young fella. Is GOD good? Student : Yes. Professor: Is Satan good ? Student : No. Professor: Where does Satan come from ? Student : From … GOD … Professor: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world? Student : Yes. Professor: Evil is everywhere, isn't it ? And GOD did make everything. Correct? Student : Yes. Professor: So who created evil ? (Student did not answer.) Professor: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they? Student : Yes, sir. Professor: So, who created them ? (Student had no answer.) Professor: Science says you have 5 Senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son, have you ever seen GOD? Student : No, sir. Professor: Tell us if you have ever heard your GOD? Student : No, sir. Professor: Have you ever felt your GOD, tasted your GOD, smelt your GOD? Have you ever had any sensory perception of GOD for that matter? Student : No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.

Professor: Yet you still believe in Him? Student : Yes. Professor : According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son? Student : Nothing. I only have my faith. Professor: Yes, faith. And that is the problem Science has. Student : Professor, is there such a thing as heat? Professor: Yes. Student : And is there such a thing as cold? Professor: Yes. Student : No, sir. There isn't. (The lecture theater became very quiet with this turn of events.) Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it. (There was pin-drop silence in the lecture theater.) Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness? Professor: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness? Student : You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light. But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't. If it is, well you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you? Professor: So what is the point you are making, young man ? Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed. Professor: Flawed ? Can you explain how? Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good GOD and a bad GOD. You are viewing the concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey? Professor: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do. Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir? (The Professor shook his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument was going.) Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor. Are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher? (The class was in uproar.) Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain? (The class broke out into laughter. ) Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir? (The room was silent. The Professor stared at the student, his face unfathomable.) Professor: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son. Student : That is it sir … Exactly! The link between man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that keeps things alive and moving. I absolutely love the workings of a logical mind.... Bob

Do any of you Dudes have a hard time believing in things you can’t see or explain, such as, ghosts, life after death, or reincarnation? I once had this dude ask me if I ever had an out of body experience before. I said, “Dude, if I had, do you think I would return to a wimpy body like this? I would be out trying to find somebody like Hulk Hulgan’s body to return to”. Do any of you have friends, who borrow stuff and never seem able to return it? Just remember, ‘friends do not let friends borrow stuff’, because you will soon run out of stuff, then soon run out of friends! Tell me about it. My memory seems to have been slippin just a little lately. Sometimes I don’t know whether I’m goin or comin, sittin or getting up. There is a condition called short term memory loss and long term memory loss. Well I’m not one to brag, but I think I have both. Then there is a thing called selective memory loss. I seem to have that with my ole lady, don’t you know. I drove to the bank the other day demanding to know, why all of a sudden I’m only getting ½% interest on my money. The woman said that their CEO was responsible for that. I said, “he is huh. Hey didn’t I read where he received a very large bonus recently”? She said, “yes he did”. I said, “how can that be”? She said, “it was his idea to give everyone a ½% interest. Did you hear where our state senator is going to retire only after 3 years in office? He isn’t going to finish out his 4 year term out. He claims his job is taken him away from his family too much. So he is resigning, so he can spend more quality time with his family and his off shore bank accounts. I ain’t jankin your chain on that. I was out riding my scooter one day when I begin to get the munchie’s. I stopped in some food store and noticed they seemed to be rippin everyone off. They shrunk the candy bars and put air in the potato chip bags so they wouldn’t have to raise the prices up any more. So I decide to buy some bottled water, but when I drank it I could tell it was watered down. I’m tellin you straight up. Til next time, keep it hangin loose - Cuz

TIRE SAFETY Everything Rides On It Protection against avoidable breakdowns and crashes. Improved vehicle handling. Better fuel economy. Increased tire life. Just a few of the reasons to take five minutes every month to check your tires. Simply use the handy checklist below, and see the reverse side for more information on tire safety. Safety Checklist Check tire pressure regularly (at least once a month), including the spare. Inspect tires for uneven wear patterns on the tread, cracks, foreign objects, or other signs of wear or trauma. Remove bits of glass and other foreign objects wedged in the tread. Make sure your tire valves have valve caps. Check tire pressure before going on a long trip. Do not overload your vehicle. Check the tire information placard or owner’s manual for the maximum recommended load for the vehicle. If you are towing a trailer, remember that some of the weight of the loaded trailer is transferred to the towing vehicle. Safety Tips Slow down if you have to go over a pothole or other object in the road. Do not run over curbs, and try not to strike the curb when parking. Remember to check your tires once a month! There’s Safety In Numbers You can find the numbers for recommended tire pressure and vehicle load limit on the tire information placard and in the vehicle owner’s manual. Tire placards are permanent labels attached to the vehicle door edge, doorpost, glove-box door, or inside of the trunk lid. Once you’ve located this information, use it to check your tire pressure and to make sure your vehicle is not overloaded—especially when you head out for vacation. Checking Tire Pressure Because tires may naturally lose air over time, it is important to check your tire pressure at least once a month. For convenience, purchase a tire pressure gauge to keep in your vehicle. Gauges can be purchased at tire dealerships, auto supply stores, and other retail outlets. Remember, the tire inflation number that vehicle manufacturers provide reflects the proper pounds per square inch (psi) when a tire is cold. To get an accurate tire pressure reading, measure tire pressure when the car has been unused for at least three hours. Step 1: Locate the correct tire pressure on the tire information placard or in the owner’s manual. Step 2: Record the tire pressure of all tires. Step 3: If the tire pressure is too high in any of the tires, slowly release air by gently pressing on the tire valve with the edge of your tire gauge until you get to the correct pressure. Step 4: If the tire pressure is too low, note the difference between the measured tire pressure and the correct tire pressure. These “missing” pounds of pressure are what you will need to add. Step 5: At a service station, add the missing pounds of air pressure to each tire that is underinflated. Step 6: Check all the tires to make sure they have the same air pressure (except in cases in which the front and rear tires are supposed to have different amounts of pressure). Checking Tire Tread Tires have built-in treadwear indicators that let you know when it is time to replace your tires. These indicators are raised sections spaced intermittently in the bottom of the tread grooves. When they appear even with the outside of the tread, it is time to replace your tires. You can also test your tread with a Lincoln penny. Simply turn the penny so Lincoln’s head is pointing down and insert it into the tread. If the tread doesn’t cover Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace your tires. For a free brochure visit www.nhtsa.dot.gov or call 1-888-327-4236.

MIXING TIRES There may come a time when you replace two new tires instead of four. If you decide to go that route, be sure that your new tires are the same size and tire type as your current tires, and that your dealer always installs the new tires on the rear axle of your vehicle (For continued optimized vehicle performance, it is recommended that all tires be replaced at the same time with identical MSPN. Deeper tread tires on the rear axle provide better handling, wet grip, and evacuate water thereby helping to avoid oversteer and loss of vehicle stability on wet surfaces. Deeper tread tires on the front axle can improve wet straight line braking and stopping distance. If only two tires are being replaces, Michelin generally recommends they be installed on the rear axle in the absence of a tire service professional's recommendation or consumer's preference to the contrary. Replacing a single tire on a vehicle can have an adverse effect on suspension systems, gear ratios, transmissions, and tire tread ware. If a single tire replacement is unavoidable, it is recommended that the single new tire be paired with the deepest tread tire from the vehicle (including the full size spare) and both be placed as a pair according to the recommendations in the paragraph immediately above. Why put new tires on the back axel • New tires will provide better wet grip than your half-worn tires. • When new tires are installed on the rear, it helps reduce the potential for your vehicle to fishtail or hydroplane in wet conditions. Tire Alignment If you’re talking about alignment, you’re talking about the adjustment of a vehicle's front and rear suspension parts. And it needs to be correct. If the alignment is off, the vehicle isn’t safe to drive. Caster Caster is a bit tough to define. If you`re viewing the side of a vehicle, the caster angle identifies the forward or backward slope of a line drawn through the upper and lower steering pivot points. Think of a motorcycle and its front steering forks and front tire. Its angle is towards the rear of the motorcycle, so it has positive caster. Negative is just the opposite. Long story short, positive caster helps your vehicle go straight, much like the motorcycle. Camber Camber is the angle of the wheel, in degrees, when viewed from the front of the vehicle. Positive camber is when the top of the wheel is leaning out from the center of the car. Negative camber is when the top of the wheel is leaning into the car. If the wheel leans too far from the center, uneven wear will occur. (However, negative camber helps racing cars improve cornering.) Toe Toe is the difference in the distance between the front of the tires and the back of the tires. Usually, tires are set so that they are parallel with each other. If the fronts of the tires are closer, the wheels are toe -in. If the rears of the tires are closer, the wheels are toe-out. Tire balance Tire balancing is pretty much what it sounds like. It compensates for the weight of the tire and wheel assembly after the tire is mounted. A wheel is out of balance when one area is heavier or lighter than the rest. That causes bouncing or wobbling, which can decrease treadwear, increase vibration and cause stress on your vehicle. The cure? Correction weights are added to counterbalance the tires. When to balance A tire is replaced A balance weight is moved or removed You purchase new tires How wheels are balanced Balancing a wheel is pretty cool process. Your mechanic uses a high-tech balancing machine to determine where the heavy spots are. Weights are then attached to the exterior or interior of the wheel to counteract centrifugal forces acting on the heavy areas when the wheel is turning. This will eliminate vertical bouncing and side-to-side wobble.
