God is so merciful that even when we make mistakes, even when we cause the trouble, He says, “I’m still going to help you out.” Maybe you’ve made mistakes. You think, “God’s not going to pay me back. I can understand if somebody else did me wrong, but this was my fault. I brought the trouble on myself.” God is going to do for you what He did for Abraham. He’s going to help you recover all. What you’re going through is not going to last forever. Are you judging the rest of your life by the season you’re in now? Have a new perspective. This too shall pass. When you come out, you’re not going to come out the same. Dare to believe that God’s going to bring you out with double: double the influence, double the resources, double the peace, double the joy, double the strength. “God will not allow things to happen that won’t somehow move you to your destiny.” … Joel Osteen
Joel Osteen Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo This month we celebrate the 25th year printing the Gulf Coast MotorSports magazine / newsletter. The Coast Cruizers started in 1995 as a motorcycle riding group in search of great places to eat and fun places to go. What started out as a small handout newsletter here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast has turned into a monthly publication mailed to the Riders & Drivers from all these states listed: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MO, MS. NM, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, WV. There isn’t a big staff who puts this publication together each month just a guy and his computer. And the most important thing I want to say is to the folks who take the time to write articles, send in emails, pass on the stories of their past and present events is Thank You. I’ve been told more than one time we don’t have a car magazine and they are right. We...(all of us, the subscribers from all the states listed above) have a family style reading newsletter. Of course almost all of us have & drive Hot Rods, Classic Cars/Trucks, Muscle Cars, Gassers and Motorcycles. So keep your stories coming this way editor@dixiepress.com and here’s to the next twenty-five years…. (Heck I’ll be 101 years old) Jimbo, Sandy Heelan wrote; The rise in American car culture gives way to popular hot rod culture in the 1950’s. Automobile ownership boomed in the 1950’s which created a car culture. Americans became enamored with automobile travel and as people moved to the suburbs more cars were needed for commuters. Due to the fascination with cars, there became a mainstream popularization of hot rod culture in the 1950’s. Hot rods had been around for a while but the term was coined in the 1940’s. But even since the Depression, young men had been modifying cars and tinkering with the engines, learning about the new piece of machinery. It is generally agreed that hot rodding began in Southern California, where men would race their customized cars in dry lakes and desert salt flats. Early hot rods were mostly built from the Ford Model T, which was inexpensive and widely available. When World War II started many men were

shipped overseas and their hot rods sat on blocks, the popularity died. But soldiers at war exchanged stories and bragged about their hot rods back home. When the war was over the craze began anew and spread across the country as so many young men had learned about hot rods. The hot rod culture in the 1950’s grew, helped by the National Hot Rod Association which was started in 1951. The NHRA worked to create a better image for hot rodding, taking it from secret races to organized events with the cooperation of local police. Along with hot rods, custom cars and street rods became very popular as young men with spare money and knowledge of mechanics turned cars into racing machines and stylish rides. By the mid-1950’s hot rod and customized car competitions were extremely popular and the fad reached its height. But shortly after this hot rod activities started to lose popularity and by the 1960’s muscle cars were all the rage. By Sandy Heelan/February 6th, 2014 Ever since I was a little kid (which wasn’t too long ago), I’ve dreamed of having the coolest car in school. Who hasn’t? Everyone has dreamed of pulling into their high school parking lot with a car that no one else has. It has just a subtle, but noticeable rumble, a nice set of wheels and good shine. You all know what you wanted that car to be and so did I: a 1969 Mach 1 Mustang with a 428 Cobra Jet, a shaker hood, and a four speed. I wanted that car so bad I started working before I was of the legal age of fourteen. I never reached my goal of owning the Mach 1 (not yet anyway), and

I was forced to “settle” when I was 15 for a 1965 fastback with a 289 and a 3-speed. I thought for sure that I would have the coolest car in school, and while some thought the car was ‘neat,’ I found that most others viewed the car in a different light. Many of my friends saw the car as a death trap. They would not even think about going anywhere in it. Knowing how much work that I have put into the car to keep it on the road, they criticized the cars reliability. They scoffed at the gas mileage. The biggest criticism they had of the car, however, and to this day I still cannot understand why, is that the car only has two doors. It was like they believed I was committing some kind of immoral act by not having an ‘ample amount of doors.’ Since when was the coolest car in the school parking lot a silver Toyota Camry? The biggest problem that he world of classic cars and hot rods face is that young people seem disinterested with any car 5 years or older. I think a lot of this has to do with the way technology is constantly changing and improving. Apple comes out with a new iPhone every two years. Madden, FIFA, and other gaming companies come out with a new game every year. Millennials (including myself) have been trained to get the latest and greatest product, and anything over a few years old is worthless. And for somethings that’s important, because you want to have a computer that can support the latest software, or a gaming console that allows you to connect with friends. Once you start getting past most of that though, the need for brand new products is completely unfounded, and the classic car community will hurt from that. What the classic car community needs to do, is help this generation of people understand what it’s all about. It’s not about a constant flow of new technology, it’s about a feeling. It’s the feeling you get from driving down the road in a classic muscle car. It’s the feeling being one with the car and not having an electrical barrier in between. It’s the feeling you get after you have finally fixed the overheating issue you have been having. It’s the clean lines of a ‘60s muscle car that just plainly look better than most of the drab styling of many cars today. After many times of trying to explain to my friends why my car was great, I realized something: if you don’t get it, you just don’t get it. Until you have felt what it feels like to be behind the wheel of a classic, until you have heard the perfect exhaust note deep in your soul, until you have spent those long nights in the garage with grease up to your elbows, you just won’t get it. So, I end with this, in order to keep the classic car culture thriving, invite someone young to work on your car with you: your kid, your neighbors kid, your nephew/niece. Teach them how to tune a carburetor, teach them how to replace drum brakes, teach them anything, and then, when you are done take them for a ride. Not a ride just down the block, but a ride down a back road, or on the highway. Watch their smiles get bigger and bigger as the exhaust gets louder and louder. Make it a ride that they will want to remember. Help them ‘get it.’ I learned to love classic cars helping my dad work on his Mustang…. EdCarter@ Jimbo, I’m walking into 2020 with a clear heart and mind. If you owe me, don’t worry about it – you’re welcome. If you wronged me, it’s all good – lesson learned. If you’re angry with me, you’ve won, congratulations. If we aren’t speaking, it’s cool..I wish you well. If you feel I wronged you, I apologize. If you’re waiting on me to fail, don’t hold your breath…you have a long wait! I’ve already overcome more than you can imagine. 1951. I had been driving since I was 8 years old, often drove my Dad’s cars and of course remember this car particularly. This car was my first love. I had other cars, but none other could take the place of that Ford. I’m sure some of you understand what I’m talking about. So this year during Cruising the Coast, we had cars/trucks to visit the Nursing Home where I live, and this is how I came to meet Mr. Jim. We had a nice talk about cars. This conversation inspired me to tell my story. I just want to thank him for the inspiring me to write about my experience. Thank You Mr. Jim, Your Friend Allen Allen Pickens Pickens Allen, we had a great time remembering our “Glory Days” and I look forward to our next visit… jimbo Jimbo, Why go to Church? If you're spiritually alive, you're going to love this! If you're spiritually dead, you won't want to read it. If you're spiritually curious, there is still hope! A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. He wrote: "I've gone for 30 years now, and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons, but for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time. The preachers are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all". This started a real controversy in the 'Letters to the Editor' column. Much to the delight of the editor, it went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: "I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this: They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When you are DOWN to nothing, God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible, and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical and our spiritual nourishment! If you cannot see God in everything, You cannot see God at All! B. I. B. L. E. simply means: Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth! from a post from Elaine Scarborough Smith Jimbo, The guys were all at a deer camp. No one wanted to room with Bob, because he snored so badly. They decided it wasn't fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they voted to take turns. The first guy slept with Bob and comes to breakfast the next morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? He said, "Bob snored so loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night." The next night it was a different guy's turn. In the morning, same thing, hair all standing up, eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? You look awful! He said, 'Man, that Bob shakes the roof with his snoring. I watched him all night." The third night was Fred's turn. Fred was a tanned, older cowboy, a man's man. The next morning he came to breakfast bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. "Good morning!" he said. They couldn't believe it. They said, "Man, what happened?" He said, "Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Bob into bed, patted him on the butt, and kissed him good night.. Bob sat up and watched me all night." With age comes wisdom. JoelJohnson@

In 1955, 15-year-old Clarence "Chili" Catallo paid $75 for a 1932 Ford coupe that became the Little Deuce Coupe -- his Ă‚-ticket to the hot rodding scene he so loved. Scraping together pennies by working in his parents' market in Taylor, Michigan, Chili had Bill Wanderer build and install a 344-cid Olds V-8. Chili rounded out the driveline with Olds parts, including a Hydra-Matic transmission and a chromed 1955 rear end. Local customizers Mike and Larry Alexander did the bodywork. The "A Brothers" sectioned and channeled the body, added a quadheadlight fiberglass nose, made a special rolled rear pan, altered the frame, and covered the cobbled frame rails with polishedaluminum fins. Topped with a blue-lacquer paint job, Chili dubbed the hot rod Silver Sapphire. Chili drag raced the coupe, turning 12.9 seconds at 112 mph in the quarter-mile, then hauled it out west when he turned 18. He landed a job sweeping floors at George Barris' shop in Lynwood, California, and traded his labor to have the crew there tear down the hot rod, chop the top, and repaint it. By 1961, the car was an all-out show rod. It now featured a 6-71 blower, three Stromberg 97s carbs, chrome-reversed wheels, a padded and tufted Naugahyde roof insert, and scads of chrome plating. By campaigning the coupe on the West Coast show circuit, Chili caught the attention of Hot Rod magazine, and the car appeared on the July 1961 cover. Its greatest fame, however, came in 1963, when it appeared on the cover of The Beach Boys' album Little Deuce Coupe. Chili sold the hot rod, now known as the Little Deuce Coupe at the height of its popularity. It went through three owners by 1963 when Ray Woloszak bought it. Ray changed the car over the years, installing a Chrysler 440-cid engine, and took it on the auto-show circuit. When Chili's son, Curt, saw it at a Detroit custom show in 1997, he convinced Chili to buy it back. Now back in Michigan, Chili and Curt began restoring the coupe to the way it looked in the Hot Rod magazine shoot that was used for the Beach Boys album cover. Unfortunately, Chili passed away before the hot rod was ready to return to the limelight. Curt forged ahead, however, enlisting the help of many of the men who originally worked on the car, as well as General Motors.
Recognizing the blown Olds engine as a significant part of the company's history, GM helped Curt with the engine and drive train rebuild. The restored car appeared at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 2001 and at the 50th Detroit Autorama in 2002. After many changes, the Little Deuce Coupe now looks like it did when The Beach Boys made it one of the most famous cars in the history of hot rodding.

It's a New Year filled with much anticipation and hope. Not unlike any of the years I have been blessed to be alive in. I do have many goals and hopes, but they are mostly repeats from years past. Some I have been working on and others are just idling on the back burners of my mind. Maybe I have only focused on what I thought were the major ones and just let the others slide. I am quite sure many of us are but works in progress, I consider this to be true about me. I guess this year will not be unlike any other, I will most likely learn some new things, and be able to use those in the coming years. I hope to do a little more traveling this year, I did enjoy all of our trips the past few years and hope to improve on them. Some of the places I would like to see are, the Grand Canyon, the Salt Flats in Utah, again, and the Queen would like to go to California to visit some of her cousins. She just might take me along as well. I will most likely be going to a few more car shows and motorcycle rides too this coming year. I always look forward to the first shows of the season and hope to make most if not all of them. I guess my goal for this year is to attempt to live life to the fullest and enjoy every moment to the max. I know I most likely said this at the beginning of last year, but I am getting very close to getting paint on the doors (as soon as it
6

gets warmer) and get them on the Big Truck Project, and take a shake down spin. Then quite possibly start making some cruise nights and car shows in it. In the scheme of things there is not much left to do after the doors are done, I hope things work out and I can focus on those small items. I have made much progress on the internal workings of the doors so they are much closer now than they have ever been to getting prepped for primer and paint. After that I just may be able to wire up and put some finishing touches on the old 72 Superglide I have owned for quite some time. It will be a blast to hear this old scooter fire up and roll again. I do miss riding on two wheels, riding the trike is fun, but there are times I feel like a little kid with training wheels or pedaling around on a Big Wheel Trike. I miss being able to lean in curvy twisty roads, on the three-wheeler there is no lean, its push and pull on the bars, and it's a little harder to fly through corners and curves. I am not talking about excessive speed either, just being able to keep up with the others I am out riding with. So, getting the old Superglide on the road would be a blast. These are just some of the things I hope to accomplish this year, I am almost convinced I can get most of this done, and if not, well hopefully I will be blessed with another few years to accomplish some of these projects. I guess its all about priorities. And mine will be to enjoy every day and live like its my last one and try to accomplish all I have set myself to do that day and at that time. I may not get it all done but what I do get done will be fine by me. From the Carriage House, Happy and Prosperous New Year, Later Gizmo

The rides ranged from, bagged, Hydraulics, Hot rods, lead sleds, custom trucks, custom motorcycles, classic bikes and kids on their customized power wheels. Put this one on your list for next year. Our next stop was the start of our toy/food events. Our first toy drive was with Kaotik Kreations car club at Koi Sushi in Biloxi. Great turnout/support helped them collect a couple truck loads of toys for their event.
The following weekend, December 7th, found us at Edgewater Mall Biloxi for the Coast Cruizers Annual toy/food drive. The Coast Cruizers gave a special needs van away to a family with a little girl who is confined to a wheelchair. This was Coast Cruizers seventh year of giving away a van like this. They raise the money to purchase the van throughout the year at their Cruise ins from the 50/50 ticket sales along with donations/contributions along the way. They had a good turnout and got a nice load of toys/food for their organizations they support. As always get out and just cruise. Remember to watch for our friends out riding their bikes also. Allen.

A few months ago, a dear friend and long time client, Mary Fortenberry, a charter member of Coast Cruizers, told me Coast Cruizers, for the past 7 or 8 years, have given to a special needs family, a handicapped Van. Mary invited Amy to write a letter and apply for the Van. After writing the letter, two very kind, caring men, Jerry and J. R., came to the house and interviewed Amy. We then learned Fionnuala and her family would be awarded the Van. We received Van, with the side lift for the wheelchair, yesterday. Word cannot express the appreciation and gratitude our family has for this incredible gift. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Coast Cruizers. Through your generosity and presence on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, you not only help the businesses, you have helped individual families. For this kind gesture we will be eternally grateful. May God bless each and everyone of you. Paula, Mike, Amy, Fionnuala and family.

Sharing With Caring About Others This is the Holiday Season and we spend perhaps more time with our family and friends than we do during the rest of the year. It would be in everyone’s best interest if we continued this throughout the year. We also tend to do more acts of kindness during this season. It is a proven scientific fact that an act of kindness has physiological benefits, including an increase in energy and immune system performance, enhanced cognitive function, lower heart rate, a balance in cortisol levels which reduces stress, and a longer and more satisfying life. Take a minute and think about the last time you performed a spontaneous act of kindness. Made you feel good, didn’t it? It probably put a smile on your face and a skip in your step. It also can reduce pain by releasing dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. These are the “feel good” chemicals. These benefits extend to the giver, the receiver, and anyone who witnesses the act of kindness. Interesting isn’t it? Good health for everyone involved in acts of kindness. Last month I wrote briefly about a mentoring program in the automotive hobby. I only scratched the surface of how important it is to pass on our skills to young people. Today, I am not speaking of mentoring in any particular field or industry. This is about mentoring younger people in general. I am speaking to the act of mentoring in all facets of life, the sharing of our life skills with others. A mentor is a trusted counselor or guide. A mentor is that person that we trust who can hold up a mirror to ourselves so we can see our true value, because he is detached and disinterested. You can therefore be a mentor to anyone at any time, sharing your knowledge and experience with someone who is eager to soak it up. Seniors can serve as mentors in many ways. They can work with people of any profession, and they do not need any particular skill set. Think about this for a minute. Mentors can take what young people are learning in the classroom and relate it to occupational realities that are confronted every day in the workforce. It is important to help these students realize that what they are learning in school is applicable in their future…that basic skills are essential to earning a good salary. This provides meaning to students who might not realize the value of classroom learning. Show them that what they are learning has value to them and you start to eliminate dropouts. If we want to turn around the cycle for low income students who have traditionally done poorly in high school (roughly 25%) who have had poor attendance records and below average grades, mentoring is one way to do it that has proven success. In addition, mentoring programs have shown success in decreasing the use of drugs and alcohol in teens, lowering gang affiliation, and teen parenting.
Students take physical education classes in school and with that exposure they discover their like or dislike of athletics. The schools breed our pro football and basketball stars. With all the money that is poured into sports, one would think that every kid was going to be successful in professional sports. Are they? How about the same push in a different direction for those that are interested in working with their hands as well as their minds? Without exposure many youngsters are going to miss out on knowing if they like making things, and have the inclination to pursue a career as a drafter, auto mechanic, welder, body shop professional, or carpenter. Statistically, there is a greater chance of a kid being a tradesperson than becoming a professional athlete. Companies are struggling to find skilled labor, and that will continue into the future. The skilled trades are undervalued in America. They are undervalued in the American educational system that has strategically eliminated shop classes in high school. They are undervalued in the collective consciousness that views them as lowly, “blue collar”, dirty, and unprofessional. The funny thing is that there is one place where they are not undervalued at all. That is in the marketplace, which has seen greater and greater demand for the skilled craftsman, be he a carpenter, machinist, electrician, mechanic, and so on. The skilled tradesman has his choice of jobs, needs to answer to no one, and makes good wages. These perks are nothing to scoff at in this day and age. Think about what you can do to pass your knowledge on to another generation. Teach them your values and how you got them. Let them know your history and show them how important it is. It is not what we give but what we share, For the gift without the giver is bare.
Thanks to you loyal readers for another year of your support. Thank you for all the emails you send me with suggestions for what you want me to write about. Without you, all this is for naught. A Happy New Year to all of you and your families. I hope next year is even better for you than this year was.

NEW FRIENDS Saudi Arabia, Riyadh and the global car event I went to... So now that I've had time to recover from that 33 hour day return flight home and get through the holiday, I wanted to write something about my amazing experience there. To begin, it was 100 times better than I expected:) When I agreed to go I was a little By: Jeff Allison apprehensive about it. And every single person I know felt the same way... everyone was afraid. But I can tell you this, that fear seems to be the result of a whole lot of propaganda. I met and interacted with hundreds of people there, and every one of them was super nice... young, old, male, female, all of them. and not just at the event where you would assume they would be cool by default, the people everywhere we went were very hospitable.. I met people from surrounding countries also, also very nice. And all of these people were super happy to see Americans and cars there along with being super proud to be Saudis. Yes, the culture was very different, but also very similar... its hard to describe really. The one thing I soon realized is that not once did I ever feel "afraid" , intimidated or in danger. The show itself was pretty amazing. It had a few glitches but overall I think it was an amazing feet to make that happen, there. I sat in this one area (more times than I should have) surrounded by hundreds of millions of dollars worth of vintage Ferarri's, drinking Turkish coffees and eating fancy deserts... and that was only a display. Outside there was every kind of super car you could imagine, inside the temporary buildings there were Ridler cars, show cars, muscle cars... they set a new record on the Hot Wheels loop.. there were car stunts, drifting, Monster trucks, the human cannon ball... heck, I even had an organic coffee from Urth, a place I have coffee at right here in the Orange circle... (that was a surprise for sure) ... and, I got to sit down and draw with Chip Foose, something I have wanted to do for 20 years... it was all that much better that I got to do that and give the drawings to service men and women. In my little booth with the other stripers, Harpoon, Skratch and Lil Dame, we exposed people to something they had never seen before.... pin striping.. They seemed to dig it even if most of them had no clue as to why you would put that on a car. In fact I met this one gentleman who was very interested in how the brush was shaped, and it was the last day... so I cleaned up my Mack brush and gave it to him after some pointers.. how cool would it be to see that guy take up the art and be the first Saudi pin striper?? I hope I see him next year with a bunch of works he has done#) one thing I did miss.... Tacos.. I could find every other staple except tacos... guess what I made for dinner last night?:) I guess my point is this: Dont believe everything you are told about anything, until you experience it for yourself. I very much hope this event happens even bigger and better next year, and that I am again a part of it. I want to again thank Bud and Khaosmix for inviting me, thanks Globalautosalon for putting on the event, Thanks Jimmy Shine for making me a part of our speedshop family, thanks Scott Rogers and Alpha6 for doing the striper jam, thanks the US ARMY for having us on the base and their service, Thanks to the Crown Prince for opening up the country to us and having this event in the first place.... and most of all, thanks to all the amazing people from Saudi, the middle east and even from back here in the US that I met, it was a really great time and I feel like I made a lot of new friends.

Spooky Pookie Among the rows of uber talented artists at this year's Tampa Tattoo Arts Convention was Jessica, better known as Spooky Pookie, whose sultry, eerie Halloween pinup artwork was a favorite among the pinup contest judges and contestants. My friend and host of the Miss Tampa Pinup Contest, Miss Pinup Miami, purchased one of Jessica's kitschy prints. Her tattoos and artwork combine two of my favorite things: Halloween and pinups! Jessica pursued her love for art and tattooing after she completed her Bachelors Degree in drawing at the University of Florida. Since that time, she has completely devoted herself to tattooing, with a special interest in vintage and spooky subject matter. Pinup culture and imagery have a huge influence on her work, and often come to life in her work as a crossover with her love for Halloween. In the beginning, the majority of her work consisted of large scale ink drawings. However she also does a lot of digital work to efficiently keep up with tattoo appointments. Jessica currently tattoos at Trilogy Tattoos in Riverview, Florida, located in the greater Tampa Bay Area. After completing her apprenticeship at Trilogy, she joined the ranks as one of their full time featured artists. Jessica enjoys adding a ghostly touch to her tattoos. She enjoys high contrast black and grey pieces, but also has a soft spot for traditional and vintage inspired color tattoos. To see more of her work or for bookings, you can follow Jessica on Instagram @spooky.pookie or visit her tattoo shop's website: www.trilogytattoos.com

Who says you can’t go home. The 52nd annual SNOWBALL Derby was like going home for me. For 30 years I announced at one or two tracks a week, but as age and time was starting to catch up with me I wanted my weekends back and decided 30 years to do anything was plenty. So my last race before retiring in December 2005 was the SNOWBALL Derby at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL and I had not been back since. In 2018 I went and worked PR for a driver at Daytona. This year I helped a friend out and announced for him at a track in Mobile, but I did that to help him get going, I am not planning on getting back in to it. The SNOWBALL Derby has improved since I left, well it evolved, Speed51.com was just getting involved, I worked with Bob Dilner, Bob has done wonders with Speed51.com and Speed51.com has improved the presentation of the SNOWBALL Derby both at the track and broadcasting the race online. Five Flags also had three giant big screens showing Speed51.com’s coverage of the event. The SNOWBALL Derby should be on your bucket list if you have ever loved short track stock car racing. Its four straight days of hard, competitive racing and every day is awesome. Thursday and Friday are for the local classes of race cars, these large fields of race c ars are also impressive. It makes any race won at the Derby special because you will have beaten stiff competition. No win at the Derby comes easy. Friday night is also SNOWBALL Derby qualifying, 57 cars came to try and make 38 starting spots. The field is separated by a quarter of a second from the pole to the 38th place car. So want to try for the pole, bobble just bit and you may not make the field. The Derby started in 1968, it is the Super Bowl for Super Late Model racing in the U.S., the main event of the SNOWBALL Derby, it’s 300 laps. Buy the program, a nice program and read through the starting lineups over the years. They have the full lineups back to 1969. 1968 they have a partial lineup. You will see all the NASCAR greats that tried their best to win that Tom Dawson Trophy. Rusty Wallace tried to win the Derby nine times, Kenny Wallace 13 times, Red Farmer 30 times. Names like Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, David Pearson, Tiny Lund, Bobby, Davey & Donnie Allison, Buddy Baker and many more great drivers are in those past line-ups. The Derby has over the years, as the drivers ages got younger and younger, become a proving ground for future talent. Drivers like Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott have found victory lane at Five Flags Speedway.

Saturday is full of racing action with the main event being the Alan Turner SNOWFLAKE 100, a 100 lap event that features the Pro Late Model race cars. 37 cars started the race, on lap 54 a fiery crash send the grandson of the late NASCAR driver Neil Bonnett, Justin Bonnett to the hospital. Justin’s 12 car tangled with the 46 of Jarrett Parker, Parker’s fuel cell was torn from his race car setting Bonnett’s race car on fire. Bonnett’s fire suppression system had killed the fire once, but sparks from the left front tire, which was blown in the wreck reignited the fire again. Young Bonnett was sitting in his race car with compound fractures of the tibia and fibula bones in his left leg. Luckily the safety workers at Five Flags Speedway were real firemen and trained for driver extraction. Justin suffered the broken leg, burns to his face, neck and hands. That happened through the fireproof protective clothing, the fire was horrendous to watch, but thank God the safety workers got him out of the car. Bonnett was transported to a local Pensacola hospital and soon after was air-lifted to a burn center in Mobile, AL. Good news, press time Justin is out of ICU, had surgery today (12/13/19) on his leg to put a rod in and worked on his burns.
photo of Justin Bonnett & his car on fire The Alan Turner SNOWFLAKE 100 was won by 43 Derick Thorn, who also sat on the pole in his Super Late Model for the Derby. If he could have won the Derby from the pole, he would have pocketed another 10K as a bonus. It was great to go to the Derby as a fan, I was a member of the media to cover the race for this column, but I got to experience the race as a fan, something I never got to do while my announcing career was going on. Sunday it was time for the big race, $25K to the winner… the 300 lap SNOWBALL Derby, race time was 2 pm but you better get there at 8:30 am unless you want to park a half mile away, up and down the side of Pine Forrest Road and walk…. or park a few miles away at the Fair Grounds and take one of the many shuttles running back and forth. The weather did not look good for the race. Everything stopped for track drying and it just kept sprinkling rain.
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
The jet dryer from NASCAR and the safety vehicles tried to hold the track. Finally after 3 pm the race was called and postponed for the next day, Monday at 4 pm.
Here’s the Top 10 finishers at this year’s event… I worked until noon on Monday in Mobile, AL, headed home to Pensacola, FL to change and get to the SNOWBALL Derby; the weather Monday was cloudy, dry and great racing weather, cool that means grip! The Derby would start in the daylight hours and finish under the stars. The track would change greatly during the event. Thorn looked good early in the Derby, he was going for that 10K bonus, later Ty Majeski looked good, he led 139 laps, Ty was going for his 100th Super Late Model victory. Cautions late in the race changed Majeski’s luck as he spun the tires on the last restart and opened the door for Steven Nasse to take the win in the 52nd annual SNOW BALL Derby…but wait a minute. In tech inspection after the race, in the Room of Doom as it’s called, Steven Nasse in victory lane titanium caps were found in the winner’s brake calipers. Any titanium is a no no, says so in the rulebook, Nasse was disqualified.

This year’s race was a sellout, once fans renew their tickets, the rest will go on sale to the public. Get yourself a good ticket; they have various ticket packages… call the Five Flags Speedway office at (850) 944-8400. You want to be there the first weekend in December 2020 for four straight days of stock car racing heaven! You can always go home, its fun to reminisce…it’s one way to help renew that 17 FOREVER way of life! til next month… Terry terrymasonbarfield@gmail.com
“SNOWBALL Derby winner Travis Braden didn’t get the victory lane celebration, but he got the Tom Dawson trophy, the big check and the record book.” The 2nd place driver Travis Braden was declared the winner. Not since Eric Jones has a driver won the Derby on his first start, but Braden did.

Welcome back everyone!!! When we left off 2 months ago, we were revved up and excited to race our new car! So first off, I want to apologize for not making my article deadline last month! I had all intentions on getting it written while we were at the track at Whynot, but it just never happened! We had too much excitement going on all weekend!...So here we go!!! With the new race car being ready to race for several weeks before the actual race weekend, I was having some nervous anxiety that something simple/stupid was going to happen at the track and prevent us from racing and/or finishing the race! This made Chase and me to do multiple rundowns and bolt checks on the new car! We both went over the car several times in detail checking bolts, wires, and fluid levels making sure we were 100% race ready! Normally on a 2-3day race weekend, we only arrive for the final night and fall in on the rear of the field and hope for the best! Since this was our first time out with the new car, I promised Chase that I would let him be there all 3 days. We arrived Thursday, before the scheduled practice was to begin, and it looked like we had brought the rain with us. It never poured down hard, but the constant drizzle left the officials no choice but to cancel practice for Thursday. Great! Now we get to wait a little longer to see what we had bought! Friday was absolutely beautiful! The practice was on time and we were ready! I was so nervous!!! If Chase was nervous, he did a great job hiding it! Here we GO!!! 36 of the best modified drivers from the south are here and ready to do battle for the 25th Annual “Coors Light” Fall Classic at Whynot Motorsports Park! We roll out on the track with a group of 6 or 8 of these bad boys! They idle around for a lap or so and then finally…the flagman throws the green flag! WOOOOOHOOOOO!!! Chase gases on it going into turn 3 and launches off of turn 4 and down the front straightaway! WE FAST!!! He sets her up into turn one and before you could say “uh oh” he is spinning around! No harm done…we didn't hit anything, and nobody hit us, so we are all good! He gets it pointed in the right direction and the green flag drops again! This time he's more cautious but still fast. A lap or two later he opens her up and WOW!!! This son of a
20
JANUARY 2020
gun is a ROCKET!!! When he opened it up this time, he ran down the car in front of him so quick that he spun it out again to keep from running over the guy. Chase told me later that he wasn't expecting to catch that guy so quick and when Chase realized he was on him, he panicked and tapped the brakes, and around he went! I say those nerves he was hiding earlier were peeking out…but that's why we were here for practice…again no damage and no worries…we needed to shake this new car down and shake the nerves off of our driver! The practice was controlled by race officials and was separated by classes. Each class only got one practice session and then once all classes went in a rotation then you got 1 more practice session. Since there were so many cars in Chase's class, when he came off the track after that first round, he jumped right back in line with a group of modifieds still waiting for their first practice session. As Chase pulled onto the track the official caught him and motioned for him to leave the track…Chase stopped and waved him over to talk. He somehow persuaded the official to allow him a double session to “shake down this new car”! The official reluctantly agreed as he waved Chase past and radioed what was going on to the other officials. Green flag in the air and here we are for “our” round 2! I'm not exaggerating when I tell you Chase looked better this time on the track then I've ever seen him look in a modified! He laid down some of the smoothest fastest laps EVER! One thing that was becoming very clear to me at that moment was, we had definitely made a great move going to this new Hughes chassis! We met up at the trailer and Chase was surprisingly calm. He didn't have a lot to say, other than he could tell this car was superfast! We ended up getting a total of 5 sessions of practice and each one looked better than the last!
Chase and Hollingsworth battling for position!
Next up…Qualifying!!! I really didn't know what to expect here, but we were ready! Remember, we're up against a huge group of the best drivers around. We've got our local hotfoots from Mississippi, along with the best of the best from as far away as Missouri, Tennessee, Florida, Louisiana, and Alabama! Chase came out in a group that included local favorite, the #008 of Greg Hollingsworth. Chase tried his best to shadow Hollingsworth for the fastest line around the infamous House of Hook. When the checkered waved on their qualifying group, we saw Hollingsworth in the top spot with the fastest time of the night so far, and Chase had made it in the top 5 fastest at that point! WOW!!! There were still more cars to qualify tho…When the dust settled it was Lakeland, Tennessee's Hunter Wilbanks with the fastest time of the night. We checked the line-up board and they had us listed as 8th fastest out of 36 modifieds! Awesome job Chase!!! Heat race time… The line-up showed us starting front row outside in the 4th heat race. We made sure our car was ready and we were kinda just anxiously waiting for the 4th heat race! While we were waiting, Adrian showed me a post on Facebook from one of our friends that had the qualifying results…This paper showed us 9th out of 36 cars…still great, but if this is correct then we are starting
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
You did awesome buddy! BUT....
3rd in the FIRST heat race which means we better be getting ready NOW!!! I called Chase and sent him to recheck the line-up board and he quickly confirmed that the original line-up had indeed changed, and we needed to be headed to the grid NOW!!! We rolled out in the first heat race starting in the 3rd position behind the pole setter Hunter Wilbanks. Only the top 4 will advance (from each heat race) to the A-main and the other 5 cars would need to race in a B-main to hopefully make it into the main event Saturday night. Here we go! On the first attempt at a start, one of the guys in the back spun in turn one bringing out a caution. While under caution they warned the leader/pole sitter Hunter Wilbanks about jumping the start. They reiterated (over the radio) that the flagman is to start the race! So, as they fire for the 2nd time, Wilbanks jumps out front and Chase takes over 2nd as the caution waves again. The flagman didn't like it! They called it on Wilbanks for jumping the start and they made him move back a row which put Chase on the pole now! They warned them over the radio again not to fire before the flagman waves the green… Chase obeys and as the green waves Chase launches out front of the field! Here we go, we're leading this thing and starting to put some daylight on the field when a caution comes out again! There's a pile up for the transfer spot. On the next start, Chase gets schooled by Bryan Powell (#9), and quickly falls in line for 2nd as Powell leads the way this time! For the next 7 laps to the checkered flag, it was pretty much follow the leader as we crossed the checkered 2nd! This performance locked us into a 5th place starting spot for the 30 lap main event Saturday night. VERY satisfied with these results so far!!! Saturday has arrived and it's time for us to see where we stack up…we woke up and immediately began searching for 4 fresh tires! We had brought 10 wheels and tires with us, but they were all used tires. Honestly, we didn't know what to expect and certainly never imagined we'd be starting 5th in this stacked field of hotrods! We somehow scavenged 4 brand new tires from 3 different sources which we greatly appreciated! We got them mounted up and ready to go! We left on a used set of tires for the final hot-laps Saturday night. In hot laps Chase looked fast through the corners, but the car looked like it was lacking speed down the straightaways! Chase came in totally BENT!!! Like he was in full panic mode telling me that we had a problem with the engine! We got him settled down and had him explain in detail what kind of problems he was feeling and hearing. He explained that the engine was struggling to get up in rpms down the straightaways. It sounded like a fuel issue, so we went straight to the carburetor! We found/cleaned a couple clogged air passages and were satisfied that the problem was fixed. We run methanol fuel, and it was really cold outside, and the engine didn't have enough time to warm up good before hot laps. So, we felt like that could've been some of the culprit too! Either way I was satisfied that the car was now fixed! Feature race time!!!...We ran over to Noah's pit area right before the race to see if he had any last-minute suggestions on adjustments…and he did. Noah suggested that we make a minor
adjustment to the rear suspension, to tighten the car up a tad, and Noah's wife Renee, jokingly told Chase “two clicks to the left”! Well between Noah and Renee's adjustments, we had ourselves a fast hotrod when the green flag dropped! Chase was able to put that thing anywhere he pointed it, and it was a ROCKET!!! There were several cautions early and Chase had some great side by side runs with some of the best in the business! At this point, I'm trying my best to catch it all on video as we watch it live from turn 3! Chase gets as far up as fourth position and falls back as far as 11th , as the competition is so intense! So, here I am just trying to remember to breathe as I watch on! Chase was working on the high side and it seems to be going really well! Chase must have been thinking “if this car is this good 6 foot off the wall then I wonder what it will do if I drag the spoiler down the fence!”…AND SO HE DID…And he got faster!!! With just 7 or 8 laps to go, on a restart, Chase found himself racing 4-wide in 11th position and he took it to the fence, with sparks flying from him making contact off the wall! Here he comes charging back to the front!!! He got as far up as 7th as the checkered flag waved! WoooooHoooo!!!!
Way to go Chase!!! Our friend Noah brought home the win, and we finished a respectable 7th place! Overall this was a great weekend for Chase, and it was certainly a great “first” run on our new Hughes chassis! We couldn't be prouder, and we are super excited to see what the 2020 race season has in store for us! THANK YOU to all of you fans and especially our sponsors! From my family to yours, we want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! May God Bless you all and keep you safe, until next time…Chavus
