Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine Be a person of integrity. Do the right thing when nobody is watching. Don’t let small things keep you from the big blessings God has in store. Start passing these tests. If you’ll be trustworthy, honorable, a person of your word, because you walk in integrity, God is going to keep a shield around you. He’s going to keep you from making major mistakes. You’re not only going to be protected, you’re going to see promotion, favor, good breaks, new levels, the fullness of your destiny. God never said we wouldn’t have difficulties. Being a person of faith doesn’t exempt us from challenges and unfair situations. That’s a part of life. The scripture says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord will deliver us out of them all.” The promise is not that you won’t have difficulties. The promise is God will bring you out, not of some of them, not of most of them, but out of all of them. “God will not allow things to happen that won’t somehow move you to your destiny.” … Joel Osteen

Joel Osteen Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo While I was thinking about what I wanted to write about this month I remembered a story about A businessman was in a great deal of trouble. His business was failing, he had put every cent he had into it, he owed everybody. It was so bad he was even contemplating suicide. As a last resort he went to a priest and poured out his story. When he had finished, the priest said, "Here's what I want you to do: Put a beach chair and your Bible in your car and drive down to the beach. Take the beach chair and the Bible to the water's edge, sit down in the chair, and put the Bible in your lap. Open the Bible and let the wind turn the pages. The open Bible will come to rest on a page. Look down at the page and read the first thing you see. Those words will tell you what to do." A year later, the businessman went back to the priest and brought his wife and children with him. The man was in a new, customtailored suit, his Wife wore a mink coat and the children were shining. The businessman pulled an envelope stuffed with money out of his pocket and handed it to the priest. The priest recognized the benefactor, and was curious. "You did as I suggested?" he asked. "Absolutely," the businessman replied "You went to the beach?" asked the priest "Absolutely." "You sat in a beach chair with the Bible in your lap?" asked the priest "Absolutely." "You let the wind turn the pages until they stopped?" asked the priest "Absolutely." "And what were the first words you saw?" asked the priest "Chapter Eleven." So that brings me to the topic for this month. “Buy Local.” support the businesses that are in your neighborhood before making the choice to send your money off to another area. Maybe it is cheaper somewhere else but keeping the businesses in your area open provides many benefits to your community. Jobs for one thing. Taxes for our local government is another.

Every time I see a store close down I feel disappointed for the people who had their hearts set on making a go of it, takes a lot of courage to stop working for a company and open your own business. Time, money and dedication to your ideas and dreams gone... Jimbo, Have you been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, "Surely I can't look that old?" I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his DDS diploma, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 50-odd years ago. Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face 'was way too old to have been my classmate After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Lawton Senior High school. "Yes. Yes, I did. I'm a Wolverine." he gleamed with pride. "When did you graduate?" I asked. He answered, "In 1961. Why do you ask?" "You were in my class!" I exclaimed. He looked at me closely. Then, that ugly, old, wrinkled son-of-a#@*#! asked, "What did you teach?" janeen@

Jimbo, Sarah, the church gossip and self-appointed supervisor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business. Several residents were unappreciative of her activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused Sam, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his pickup truck parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. She commented to Sam and others that everyone seeing it there would know that he was an alcoholic. Sam, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just walked away. He said nothing. Later that evening, Sam, quietly parked his pickup in front of Sarah's house............... AND he left it there all night. sharonknowsbest@ Jimbo, More evidence that someone needs to invent the "man cycle" on a washing machine. One day my housework challenged boyfriend decided to wash his sweatshirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to me, "What setting do I use on the washing machine?" It depends," I replied. "What does it say on your shirt?" He yelled back, "GREEN BAY PACKERS!!" This 1955 Chevrolet owned by Randy Barnes of Meridian, MS. was restored in 2001. A/C, power steering, tilt column, tubular control arms and front disc brakes make this Chevy a comfortable driver (24,000 miles since resto) including 17 trips driven to Cruisin’ the Coast. Powered by a 383 cubic inch power plant, with Brodix heads and a Bullet custom ground cam. Elelbrock Air Gap intake manifold is fueled by a F.A.S.T. electronic fuel injection. All that power turns a 5 speed Tremac transmission and a Strange S-60 positraction rear-end at the back wheels.

Jimbo, I recently spent $6,500 on a young registered Black Angus bull. I put him out with the herd, but he just ate grass and wouldn't even look at a cow. I was beginning to think I had paid more for that bull than he was worth. Anyhow, I had the Vet come and have a look at him. He said the bull was very healthy, but possibly just a little young, so he gave me some pills to feed him once per day. The bull started to service the cows within two days, all my cows! He even broke through the fence and bred with all of my neighbor's cows! He's like a machine! I don't know what was in the pills the Vet gave him . . . . . . but they kind of taste like peppermint. Check out Nostalgia from Scott "Scooter" Strenzel back a few years ago in Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine. Good little story here that states a lot of truth in the lifestyle/hobby. If your really in this for the love of it and to keep the car culture going you get the kids/young ones involved. The man says it perfectly. I will add a little extra and say look around see how many younger ones you've actually encouraged, helped, welcomed, given car advice to or even given respect to for what they have done to their own rides. Getting them to join a club or organization is ok. But telling/showing them some body work, welding/ fabrication electrical, upholstery or engine tricks/techniques will encourage them in the lifestyle. Ok off the preaching now. Get out and My name is James Ford, and this is my story. My first car was a l969 Plymouth Road Runner. I worked hard to fix her up, which began me working on cars in my yard for friends and family. My clientele was growing so I needed a bigger place to do business. Mr. Snowball of Gulfport gave me a place in his shop to help me get started. I worked on detailing motorcycles for a while before moving up to cars. Once again I started getting a lot of business so I decided to open up my own place, “James Best Paint and Body Shop”. The first car I painted was a Corvette, I was so nervous but it turned out great. Around the same time I was asked to paint an Eagle on the hood of a Firebird. This would definitely test my art skills. It took me a few days, but the Eagle turned out pretty awesome. Word of mouth regarding my job with the Eagle started to spread, and I was asked to do pin striping and body molding on new cars at Letch Buick Company. So from then on, custom detailing became my profession. I’ve been told that from time to time, that Firebird with the Eagle is still seen cruising the roads. Signed, James Ford from The Boyington Nursing Center in Gulfport, Ms.

On a personal note… I had a show bike many years ago. When it came time for some custom paint and molding, the word around town was I needed to see James Ford. I won a few awards with that ol” Panhead and Nancy & I put on quite a few miles on “the Skull” before the bike found a new home. ….. jimbo

Reprinted from February 2018 Scooter's stories of his youth are fun to read and true, but not serious to and for the hobby. In the last few weeks I've been at some very large national car events. I've been able to meet and be given even a little amount of creditability as a freelance old car hobby writer by many of them. I was told I could use their names, but am simply not going to. They are simply too famous in the hobby. But what I am going to do is to put out some hard stuff to us in the hobby. Here is an example of what I'm trying to get at. I have a life long friend that has a unique collection of old cars, just fewer than 20 of them in fact. His collection was started in the '50s and '60s by his father. He was telling me at a show that his only child has no interest in cars, period. His unique collection is made up of only survivor cars with under 7,000 miles each. Now, they are not all red hardtops, or drop-top models. An example (I'm lying about it to protect him) but the numbers are correct. It's a 1954 Chevy 210 4-door with power steering and Powerglide with only 3,500 miles on it. Yes, some of his survivors are so called nothing cars, but they are all stock and nice. I told him that I had some deep conversations with the above mentioned biggies, about collectors getting older and facing certain death. One guy said that none of us actually own our cars. We are just keeping them until we die, and they get sold or scrapped. Guys and gals, this is basically true. If you have one or a dozen old cars and are over 60, you'd best be setting the correct stage of how that or those hunks of metal out in the garage will end up BEFORE you croak. We all know that when there is money around, family members can get a little funny about their share. My buddy has talked with his wife and now has it setup with lawyers etc, that he's keeping his favorite street rod. And the rest of them are now being sold. I say also that he is searching for the proper buyer that's much younger and will have the correct feeling as to the value of the car and can convince him that he will carry on the car in the way he would if he was alive. One guy that has about $450,000 into six or seven cars told me his kids would sell them all to the first wholesale buyer at whatever bid he gave them. Then they'd take the money and buy an airplane or a boat and take a cruise. Yes, they might use some of it for the grand kids education, etc. But the thing I'm trying to get across is that if we don't get the cars into being kept and collected, the hobby will run out of some of the stock older cars, etc, very soon. Kids today under 30 won't know or care of the value of a numbers-matching Road Runner or a Model A. They just buy a kit car and have one titled and assembled the way they have to have it. Most people under 50 can't stand the thought of drum brakes with a single master cylinder system, bias ply tires, no power steering, etc. And today's soccer moms wouldn't drive a 1957 BelAir with no power, no air condition, no FM across the street. We that still have them, notice I didn't say own them, have to get things ready to be handed down to youth that has been schooled or appreciates the history of the automobile. As long as I'm up on the old car soap box, I'm still seeing the majority of us over 60 grey hairs just sitting in our chairs, behind our cars at shows, shooting the poop with the same buddies that we have breakfast with four times a week anyway. And then, we completely ignore anyone under age 40 (Continued on page 6)

The Goals of the NSRA Events The National Street Rod Association prides itself in producing events that are inclusive for all participants. The goal is providing a wide range of activities for a great three-day experience of 'Fun With Cars' for everyone. At the end of each event just before everyone hits the road for home, a Award Ceremony is held. On average well over two dozen awards categories are represented with nearly twice that many individuals being recognized because some categories have multiple winners. However, it's important to make clear that awards can come in very distinct ways. The NSRA awards are not judged or based on completion, rather they are recognition based on favorable notice or attention. The awards themselves are usually described a "picks" chosen from a number of alternatives and personal likes typically after careful thought. There are no losers. However, to be picked out of thousands of vehicles can be just as important to an individual as winning a judge competition. The NSRA strives to put on events where everybody that attends goes home feeling like a winner because the enjoyed seeing friends and their cars, meeting parts manufacturers face-to-face, shopping at the swap meet or arts and crafts fair, enjoyed games, or being inspired during the church service, of simply enjoyed our great nation traveling to and from the event. The NSRA meets the goal at every National and this is what makes the events a success. The motor give away to two lucky winners were Linda Runnels from Florida and Micheal Brass. Hopefully Jags will give two motors for next year. ……. Donna

that walks by our car. Plus, I've been hearing us oldies making comments like…… those inked, low income kids can't afford a car anywhere near what mine is worth, so I'm not going to even acknowledge they exist. And it's even worse if their wife or gal friend has pink or purple hair, etc. We sure seem to have appointed ourselves master judges at who is good enough for us to get out of our chair and offer conversation to them and make them feel welcome to the hobby of old cars. Come on, we all didn't begin this hobby with mint expensive rides. I'm not saying we should hand them the keys and let them take our numbers-matching Hemi for a ride down a dirt road or ask them to have dinner at our home. But, golly, let's at least recall how we started and give them a little information and a smile so maybe they will enter the hobby at some time in their life. After all, us baby boomers won't last forever and there simply are not as many younger people out there..… The hobby needs as much

By: Joyce Lachaussee What a celebration we had for our 10th anniversary of the Hardee's Breakfast Cruise In. It was the largest cruise ever, with 60 cars participating! The sun was shining, coffee was hot, and the music was all oldies but goodies from songs we all knew. There were even chocolate valentines for the ladies. A big thanks to Tracy Martin for braving the COLD to be our DJ. We had some cruisers come dressed in their best 50's attire - with a tie for 1st place between Trudy Carney in her pink poodle skirt and Jessie and Cheryl Helms in their “Grease” outfit. Lots of first-time cruisers attended and we were happy they could share their rides with us. Jessie and Cheryl Helms were not first-time cruisers, but this 1934 Plymouth was new to the breakfast. They recently purchased this classic from Slidell. It has a Chevy 327, 350 turbo. Only thing this car is lacking is cold air but who needs it when you can style with the windows down. Really like the car especially the color, which I would call maybe plum or just plain 'purty'! Another not new to the Breakfast Cruise is Coy Turner. However, this RED 1963 ½ Falcon Futura with a 302, C4 automatic made its debut. Coy traded his '30 Model 5 window coupe for the Falcon. He said he got a great deal plus he even got $140 gas money from his trader. Not a bad deal Coy and you've got a mighty fine ride. We are always glad to see Coy. John and Amanda Williams from Lucedale made a first time showing for themselves and their 1967 Chevy truck. I would call this a pearlized white and it shows well. This truck had a frame off restoration in 2000 and was featured in 'Beach Boulevard' magazine. They also have a '74 half cab Bronco and a working stock 1920 Model T. John and Amanda gave credit to Bobby Hinton for getting them to the cruise in and we're glad he did. They both are too young to be retired so they are not always in town for the cruise, but when you are, please come back. Two more newcomers were George Miller with his yellow 1952 Shoebox Ford and Aurelia Glover with this all stock Chevy with a 216. Thanks for sharing your ride and we hope to see you both again next month. A big thanks to the Hardee's team for keeping us supplied with hot coffee and good food plus the free give aways. This group looked sharp by celebrating and dressing in the 50's. Thanks to both Mike Lachaussee and Bobby Hinton for making this a memorable 10th anniversary. What a blessed day for us all to share in a hobby we love with good friends. The joy of seeing all the cars & trucks in the beautiful weather is a gift to us all. Thank goodness for living in the USA! See you all next month on the second Friday of March at Hardee's. Keep Cruisin!

A friend recently though he saw my old roaster on an auction site. Sure, enough there it was, and I must say the present place that was selling it did me proud. They had actually taken the time to look it over and scrutinize all of my handy work. After reading their nice review it made me almost want to bid on it in hopes of getting it back. They took some pretty good pictures of it too. I have never owned a lift and did lots of the chassis work and details long before the body was ever placed, so I was happy that they had taken the time to shoot a few pictures from below. I have forwarded just a few of those pictures so those that just saw this car from above can appreciate what I had done to the underside. Now I can assure you the bottom side of the big truck project will not be and is not near as nice as the roaster was. And it may never be, it will become a driver and hopefully a good one too. I am sure it will get some road rash too and that will be fine by me. I have not been going for perfection on this one, it has some flaws and issues that would consume lots more time and cash than I wish to spend. So, a road warrior it shall become. Speaking of the Big Truck Project, the weather around here has not been cooperating, if its not below 70 degrees, its raining and the humidity is around 3 million percent. Conditions just have not been conducive for me to smear paint on the remaining doors. I paint outside under a carport, and am always at the mercy of the elements. For now, I just have to do inside work. I do know a short spring event is forthcoming. The Queen and I had the opportunity to attend the Southern Who Winter Rod Run. They had a pretty nice crowd for a kind of chilly tart to the Saturday we went. We met up with some dear old friends and had a nice time visiting with them all. That is really what these shows are about connecting with friends and sharing our passion for all things automotive with potentially new folks that wish to join in the fun with cars scene. Also encouraging the younger folks that are also doing similar things with their respective rides. The Queen once again will be off to New Mexico a few days before Mardi Gras, and won't be back before that so, I know (weather permitting) where I will be on Fat Tuesday, at the Gulfport Dragway. This to me is one the best events happening that day, and I rarely miss it. Lots of fun watching the races and just hanging out with old friends at the track. I just may try to take the Grandboys again if they wish to go. Well its been quite slow around here and I feel a slight break in the weather for today, so that means a motorcycle ride. I will be patiently awaiting the arrival of our week or so of Spring like weather to get the painting over with. Until next month, have fun cruising, Later Gizmo

The Spring Month's are fixing to kick off the busy cruising times. This month we started with the 28th annual Winter Rod Run now being held in Slidell. This group always puts out a nice show with lots of prizes and games. They had 70 plus cars/trucks come out and enjoy the weekend. Our next ride brought us over to Atmore Al. The event held by Jesse Holmes was a old school swap meet. with over 60 vendors selling items. They did have some good deals lots of us went home with. Can't wait for the next one. We finished our Month out a Slap Ya Momma's in Biloxi for one of their Monthly Cars and coffee. On a cold/windy evening 50 plus cars/trucks showed up to hang out. Hornets are different than Wasps!! I studied about the insects and the difference between a hornet and a wasp before I began to write this. I didn't understand much of it. Now when it comes to Hudson Hornets and Hudson Wasps, I have a high interest and understanding. Odd how that works, isn't it? Hudson began producing automobiles in 1909, created by industry veterans Howard Coffin, George W. Dunham, and Roy E. Chapin. Joseph L. Hudson, founder of Hudson's department store in Detroit provided most of the funding. Hudson designed “closed model” vehicles after Chapin realized that most customers didn't want to ride outside in the elements. The driver and passengers could ride in comfort and sales skyrocketed. Hudson also adopted the General Motors self-starter, which eliminated the chance that one might break their wrist or arm when the car suddenly started during cranking. In 1916 Hudson produced the balanced crankshaft in its 6-cylinder engine. It allowed for incomparable smoothness, and soon after, the design of the “Super Six” was copied by other manufacturers. The brain-child of the famous designer, Frank Spring, the Commodore was the most luxurious example of a modern and low “step-down” car in 1948. It was a full foot lower than the competition with full frames. Hudson received rave reviews by both the automotive press and the public. Hudson sales soared…for a while. By the 1951 model year, Hudson had a styling update and a new moniker to go with it, the Hornet. Other American cars of this era were using OHV V-8's, but Hudson did not have to money to re-tool, so they continued with the development of their L-Head 6 cylinder, but with a larger displacement and performance upgrades. Despite this antiquated technology, this engine could go out and win against Hemi-powered Chryslers, and everything else. From 1951 to 1954 the Hudson Hornet became synonymous with sleekness and style for average car buyer. Racers also took notice when the Hornet proved it could out-handle and out-accelerate most other cars on the street and on the racetrack. For a brief time during the post-war years the step-down Hornet was the standard by which most of the competition was judged, but in 1951 Hudson Club Coupe 1954, Hudson merged with Nash. By 1954, the Hudson name was retired. By the end of the 1950's the Hudson's success was largely forgotten as the competition had moved on to newer vehicles with massive engines. The Hudson Hornet never left the minds of real car lovers. There was never any doubt about the “cool” lines of the Hudson. The Hudson Wasp was introduced in the 1952 model year as an upgraded version of the Hudson Pacemaker, which replaced the Hudson Super Custom models produced in 1951, and was built on Hudson's small-wheelbase platform from 1952 to 1954 before Hudson was purchased by Nash. The Wasp was available in two and four door sedans, a convertible, and a two door hardtop labeled the “Hollywood”. From 1955 through 1956 it was built on the full-sized 1951 Hudson Hornet Road Racer Nash platform and it had completely different designs for each of these two model years. The Wasp was built on the successful unitized, “Monobilt” step-down chassis design that which was supported by a perimeter frame which provided a rigid structure, low center of gravity, and side impact protection for passengers. After Hudson merged with Nash Motors, the Wasp was built by American Motors Corporation in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Wasp never achieved the racing acclaim or the public acceptance that the Hudson Hornet enjoyed. Wasps, Hornets, Beetles, Spiders, Stingers, Super Bees, Honey Bees, and possibly other insect names have fascinated auto manufacturers whenever they are searching for a moniker for a new vehicle. What is the difference between a hornet and a wasp, you ask? The hornet possesses a larger and more rounded abdomen and a 1952 Hudson Wasp Convertible wider head than a wasp. A wasp and a hornet are both insects that belong to the Vespidae family. A wasp is a stinging insect of the

order Hymenoptera. A hornet is a type of wasp that is highly aggressive and larger in size. Do you know any more than you did before I started? The only assumption I can come up with is that the Hudson Hornet was the larger vehicle that they built, and the Wasp was the smaller. Who knows what lurks inside an auto manufacturer's mind. Are you ready for Emerald Coast Cruizin? It’s here, March 4-7 Aaron Bessant Park, Panama City Beach, FL, the first major car event of 2020. We have worked hard to get the word out about the show for months now. It is amazing the work that Rakes and Lisa Parrish put in to this shows, long days of meetings with sponsors, venders, celebrities, cruisers, marketing people, musical acts and municipalities and all their functions. The phones grow to their ears with endless phone calls and very long days. If you watched it unfold, you would not believe it. It is a full time job for them, we’re lucky they love what they do and they are good at it.

Dennis Gage from the TV Show “My Classic Car” and Stacey David from “Gearz” TV Show will be doing Meet and Greets at the show. You’ll get time with them at the show for questions, photos and autographs. Entertainment wise Todd Allen Herendeen will be back, the entertainer that puts on an Elvis Show you won’t soon forget. He is also doing the Block Party this year outside his club, The Todd Herendeen Theatre at 8010 Front Beach Rd. Plus the Tommy Townsend Band, Tommy replaced Waylon Jennings in the Waylon Jennings Band with Jessie Colter after Waylon passed away. You’ll love his singing. I’ll be back as MC and playing Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show. Plus there will be some big cash give aways. March 4-7 at Aaron Bessant Park, next to Pier Park Panama City Beach, FL. This is a great car show and the first major car event of 2020. Driving home to Pensacola from Mobile after work on Friday afternoon, Valentine’s Day, I got a wild hair to stop at the Florabama. The Florabama sits on the line between Alabama and Florida and is famous for their annual Mullet Toss. I never stop into bars, but it was Valentine’s Day and I didn’t have anything else planned, so I stopped in. There was a band or two playing in all the

different sections of the bar at the Florabama. Nothing jumped out at me, but then this fiery young girl took to the stage and started playing and the sound that came out of her lungs were that of an old soul and I was captified with her total package. Her name is Alexa Burroughs. You will see her perform on American Idol, which is underway as you’re reading this, American Idol is Sunday and Monday nights on ABC I believe at 7 pm. Check your local listings to be sure and watch for her, you can find h e r o n Facebook, Alexa Burroughs Music. You can also see four clips I filmed of Lexy live that night on a post on my Facebook page. I am setting Lexy up with some bookings, because she is that dang good. So I met Lexy and her manager and found out about the American Idol deal, but even without knowing about the American Idol deal, Lexy had me. She packed the place out. She was so soulful, down to earth and humble. You won’t believe all that is coming out of a 24 year old girl. Tell everybody about the American Idol girl from Pensacola, FL, Alexa Burroughs. During the Emerald Coast Cruizin Fall event last year, Joe Martin from the TV Show Iron Resurrection built us a peddle car to auction off for charity. Joe did a great job and we raised $9,000.00 for Hurricane Relief. As we were getting the details worked out on doing the auction, Amanda “Mandi” Martin walked up to me with a video camera and said “you know you’re probably going to be on the show, I’m filming the peddle car auction and you’re probably going to be in it for the TV show.” Well I got the email from Mandi this week with the release from to show to sign. I know what all Mandi filmed and I understand the editing process working in TV, so the question is how much of that filming ends up on the cutting room floor. Now that’s an old term, it’s all digital now so there

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

is no film actually on the floor anymore, editing is done electronically but the results are the same. You may shoot ten minutes of video and use 7 seconds, 15 seconds or 5 minutes, you never know because so many factures go into the creative of the show. How long to commercial break, overall time of the show, content that matters in each segment and so forth. My nephew actually edits a reality show for the Outdoor Channel; he’ll have miles of footage that has to be edited to 42 minutes for a 60 minute TV Show. You have to have room for the commercials to be added in. So until you see the final product you have no idea what it’s going to be. But like playing a part in a movie, you don’t know how much is used of a scene until it’s edited. So it always makes the anticipation great, as the great Carly Simon sang about in the 1970’s. So I’m watching and taping the shows, which now is DVRing which I do for Iron Resurrection anyway, Wednesday nights at 8 pm central time on the Motortrend Network. I think I counted seven emails back and forth with Mandi on car show stuff, she is so sweet. Another reason to watch, my small part. Right after Emerald Coast Cruizin will be the New Roads Street Festival Car Show in downtown New Roads, LA. It’s down on the False River. A one day show packed out in historic downtown. Auto Zone supplies thousands of dollars in door prizes and the Mega 50/50 will be big. The date is Saturday March 14. This is a fun show I’ve performed at for years. I love being in New Roads! New Roads, LA is about 35 miles northwest of Baton Rouge.

February 8, 2020 By: ChandaElaine Zimmer Motorcars look like something cobbled together in a prop room and driven directly off the set of Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang or Bedknobs and Broomsticks. These ridiculous jalopies with their protruding horns, over-adorned grills, tire covers, flared fenders and, of all things, and removable glass T-tops. And there were three of them at Texoma Cars & Coffee Saturday morning, all dressed up and shining in the sunlight. While up-and-coming, Denison is a lot of things, but home to three Zimmer Motorcars? Turns out, yes. Zimmer Motorcars Corporation started in 1978 by Paul Zimmer during a dinner party, when he drew the original design for the car on a paper napkin while talking to his son. This design would become their flagship Zimmer Golden Spirit. More than 1500 of the Golden Spirit were produced between 1978-1988 with the originals built on a Ford Mustang chassis and drivetrain.

Yep, you read that right. All of those Zimmers you see here, started out as Ford Mustangs. Can you see it? Look close at the center of the car (around the driver's door and back glass.) Can you see it now? [They also built a model called the Quicksilver from 1984-1988 based on the Pontiac Fiero. (One of those shows up in the real word, I will definitely get a picture in here for you!)] All of the original Zimmer Motorcars were built in a factory in Pompano Beach, Florida. Ford supplied the new Mustangs. The Zimmer crew stretched the frames for the longer wheelbase and then added all of many, many horns, bells, and whistles which further transformed the cars from Mustangs to the iconic Zimmer. Despite all of the changes to the vehicles, these original production Zimmers retained their Mustang VINs and did not require additional regulatory safety checks – the original Mustang safety checks were deemed sufficient. After a number of personal losses in the late-1980s, the parent corporation run by the Zimmer family was bankrupted in 1988. This included Zimmer Motorcars, though Motorcars was actually profitable at the time. In 1997, Art Zimmer (no relation to the original Zimmer family) purchased the rights to Zimmer Motorcars and re-established the

company under the name Art Zimmer Neo-Classic Motor Car Company. The new Zimmer Motor Car Company manufactures 10-20 Zimmer automobiles, as well as up to 20 completely custom 4door dually Silverado trucks each year. These are manufactured in Jamesville, New York, with all of the custom metal fabricating for the steel bumpers, badge bars, and support parts supplied by Rosenthal and Chadwick of Syracuse. All Zimmers are manufactured "on order" and sold throughout the world via an international distribution network, with several distribution points in the United States. All Zimmers can be serviced at any Ford Lincoln dealership which include full-service and warranty work. For those of you interested, there are also several for sale in the US and the UK on ClassicCars.com but be sure to bring your wallet. While Zimmers from the 1978-1988 period can be had at pedestrian prices, the new ones? Base price of a 2016 Zimmer 2-door coupe is $238,700 with 435 horsepower (hp). Add another $20k if you want a full convertible. For a 4-door sedan, $276,800 with 420hp, $296,800 for the convertible version. For the rarefied R-version with 640hp, the starting price is a whopping $317,600. Want the limo? That will set you back a cool $357,600.

Whether you have a Zimmer or not, Texoma Cars and Coffee regular Burke Staes has started a YouTube channel and car club called Road Odyssey (https://www.youtube.com/results? search_query=road+odyssey+channel), which leads all who are interested on scenic routes through Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The aim of each drive is fun and relaxation and to see and enjoy the many shops, restaurants, and small towns which dot the region. Membership in the club is free and drives of 8+ hours are possible. Check out the Road Odyssey You Tube channel for videos of the car cruises, locations, and even of February's Texoma Cars and Coffee (https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AwLRrqVh6s)! All types of cars are welcome to take the drives. If interested in taking a drive, feel free to reach out to Burke on Twitter at roadodyssey or by email at roadod.carclub@gmail.com. The next Texoma Cars and Coffee will be hosted at Main Street Motor with coffee from CJ's on Saturday, March 14. Hope to see you there!

On his 74th birthday, a good old Cajun man, Sonny Boudreaux, who lived down near Crowley, Louisiana, got an unusual, and somewhat unexpected gift certificate from his 70 year old wife, Marie Boudreaux. The certificate paid for a visit to a medicine man living on a nearby Indian reservation, a man who was rumored to have a wonderful cure for erectile dysfunction. After being persistently persuaded, Sonny finally drove out to the reservation, handed his gift certificate to the old medicine man, and wondered what in the world he could possibly expect from this visit. The old medicine man handed some sort of potion in a small bottle to Sonny, and with a firm grip on his shoulder, warned, "This is a very powerful medicine. You take only a teaspoonful, and then say '1-2-3.' When you do, you will become more manly than you have ever been in your life, and you can perform as long as you want with your chosen partner." The Cajun man was feeling encouraged by this. As he walked away, he stopped, turned, and asked, "How do I stop da medicine from working, mon ami?" “Your partner must say '1-2-3-4,' "but be warned, when she does, the medicine will not work again until the next full moon replayed the old medicine man. Sonny was very eager to see if it worked, so he went home, showered, shaved, took a spoonful of the medicine and then invited Marie to join him in the bedroom. When she came in, he wasted no time. He took off his clothes and said, "1-2-3!" Immediately, he rose to become the manliest of men. Marie was very excited by the sight of this, and began throwing off her clothes. Then, she asked, "Mon cher, what was the 1-2-3 for?" And that, boys and girls, is why we should never end our sentences with a preposition, because we could very well end up with a dangling participle. Easy Cajun

This 2013 Chrysler 300 belongs to Brianne Isaac, the Assistant Controller of Hospitality Operations at Pearl River Resort. Brianne has been in the Finance department since 2010 and oversees the divisions of inventory control and non-gaming audit. This custom Chrysler may not exist if it weren’t for a freak accident. “My first custom vehicle was a 2003 Toyota Tacoma,” said Ms. Isaac. “I decided to do some cosmetic changes and sent it off for a paint job. In March 2019, there was an electrical fire at the paint shop and it destroyed my truck.” Brianne decided its replacement would be a car, something sleek and modern. She took a stock Chrysler 300, replaced the suspension with an Air Lift kit, matched the trunk setup to the exterior paint color, and put 20-inch American Racing VF 485 rims on it to finish the look. “It looks smooth and drives like a dream,” said Brianne. “The best part is, it was customized in our driveway in a matter of days and I plan on putting miles on it. I’m looking forward to a very active 2020 show season!” www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

Showdown at the Throwdown - Sucker Punch, a legendary 1963 Falcon Sprint, 4-Speed Blown Small Block Ford, has her sights set on Shady Lady, the pride and joy of Cut & Shoot, Texas. They last met in Atmore, AL at GBO10 and have unfinished business to settle this May… Match Race Mayhem...Martin vs Mills, South Carolina vs Texas, Ford vs Chevy, DSG vs SOG… Well folks it's been in the works for a week or so and I'm extremely excited to announce that THE WOMPIN WAGON will be joining us at the Battlefield Gasser Throwdown!!! I told Mr Bubba Blanton that the only way they could come is if they lined up with Captain America and he proceeded to tell me how slow Oldsmobiles are, and I better be on my toes.. All kidding aside this really means a lot to all of us to have such a historic Gasser at our race. And I just know Mr Pete and Mr Bubba will be looking down on us all with big smiles. Especially if that Nomad kicks my tail!!! What Is A Gasser And Where Did It Come From

It’s Going to be Epic!

By Bobby Kimbrough The term “Gasser” refers to a style of drag race car that was prolific in the late 1950s through the 1960s that ran on gasoline as fuel, as opposed to race fuel. These cars typically competed in “heads up” drag races that were classed by engine size and car weight. In the faster classes the cars used a straight axle front suspension that produced the imitating stance that gassers are known for. Easily recognized by common features like the higher front end stance that was developed as a means of weight transfer to the rear wheels for traction. This style became popular later as builders attempted to achieve a traditional or nostalgic race look. These cars became fan favorites as the well-known racers began to run “grudge matches” for higher purses. In no time these matches were the top billing at many shows due to the crowd entertainment factor. Gassers were the top drag racing classes in the period that is now referred to as “the gasser war years,” which ranged from 1955 through 1968. In addition to the straight axle, most gassers also sported Halibrand wheels, no front bumper, and had a front mounted Moon tank. The gasser form was dictated by function and most builders looked to eliminate as much weight as possible. Having their exhaust pipes exit through the front fender to shorten the length of exhaust tubing is another common characteristic of gassers. Builders used 1930s through 1950s production coupes or sedans to create these highly modified racing vehicles. The most common base vehicles were Willys coupes, Austin and Anglia sedans, and the Chevy Tri-Five cars.
