By: Jimbo As I start off this months column I just have to look back at Crusin’ the Coast 2015 as one of biggest MS Gulf Coast events ever. Next years Crusin’ will be the 20th anniversary and I know the Crusin’ the Coast® are making plans to make it special. Didja get to go to Cruisin’ the Coast? If ya didn’t you missed out on maybe the best CTC yet. The visiting Cruisers got more Gulf Coast hospitality then ever before. Every event during CTC was packed out, from Waveland to Pascagoula local restaurants and some of our most favorite hang outs were filled with cruisers. … View the Cruise in Gulfport was the biggest ever… and the Biloxi street party had Cruisers parking as early as 3am just to get a good spot. (no kidding, I talked to a guy who drove all night and just went there and there was 13 cars already parked.) I know the Casino’s did ok. It seemed like everyone on the Coast lined up on the sides of Hwy. 90 (where the streetlights were) to check out the cars. … (more locals were doin’ burnouts than Cruisers) I think the cop’s were getting writing cramps from all the traffic citations they were handing out. See everyone was havin’ a good time, even them!!! Edgewater seemed to be the hot spot and the Saturday night Coast Cruizers Cruise-in was the biggest party going. A thousand cars or so in the parking lot and more cruising around us. Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show blasting out the music, lot’s of 50/50 drawing prizes supplied by AutoZone, food vendors, and a 50/50 pot with over $1000 to the winner Of course Sunday was the end of it all and Cruise In Central was packed with hopeful CTC drawing winners. After all the festivities were over the highways filled up with everyone heading home. I’ll bet almost everyone of them will be back and they’ll bring a friend or two…. After all this is the Biggest Block Party in the USA……. Jimbo, Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each looks like every other horse. But if you stop your car, or are walking by, you will notice something quite amazing. Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him. This alone is amazing. If nearby and listening, you will hear the sound of a bell. Looking around for the source of the sound, you will see that it comes from the smaller horse in the field. Attached to her halter is a small bell. It lets her blind

friend know where she is, so he can follow her. As you stand and watch these two friends, you'll see how she is always checking on him, and that he will listen for her bell and then slowly walk to where she is, trusting that she will not lead him astray. When she returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, she stops occasionally and looks back, making sure her friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell. Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need. Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives. Other times we are the guide horse, helping others see. Good friends are like this .......... You don't always see them, but you know they are always there. Please listen for my bell and I'll listen for yours. "Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle" Giff Jimbo, Since this month is Thanksgiving I thought I’d send you something that happened a long time ago… This is more embarrassing for my mother than for me because I wasn't quite four years old when it happened. My mother taught me to read when I was 3 years old (her first mistake). One day I was in the bathroom and noticed one of the cabinet doors was ajar. I read the box in the cabinet. I then asked my mother why she was keeping napkins in the bathroom. Didn't they belong in the kitchen? Not wanting to burden me with unnecessary facts she told me that those were for special occasions. Now fast forward a few months. It's Thanksgiving Day, and my folks are leaving to pick up the pastor and his wife for dinner. Mom had assignments for all of us while they were gone. Mine was to set the table. You guessed

it! When they returned, the pastor came in first and immediately burst into laughter. Next came his wife who gasped, then began giggling. Next came my father, who roared with laughter. Then came mom, who almost died of embarrassment when she saw each place setting on the table with a "special occasion" napkin at each plate, with the fork carefully arranged on top. I had even tucked the little tails in so they didn't hang off the edge. My mother asked me why I used these and, of course, my response sent the other adults into further fits of laughter. "But Mom, you SAID they were for special occasions!! Happy Thanksgiving Everyone…… Kitty Kat I ain’t touchin’ that one… Jimbo

THE WAY I SEE IT So here it is…the holiday eatin’ season. You’ll be going to Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years dinners and parties and I know your wonderin’ jus how you can keep in shape. Well I finally found some health tips that make sense! Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? Answer: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap. Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables? Answer: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable slop. Q: Are beer or wine bad for me? Answer: Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we all know, scientists divide everything in the world into three categories: animal, mineral, and vegetable. We all know that beer and wine are not animal, and they are not on the periodic table of elements, so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: Have a burger and a beer and enjoy your liquid vegetables. Q: How can I calculate my body / fat ratio? Answer: Well, if you have a body, and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc., Q: At the gym, a guy asked me to "spot" for him while he did the bench press. What did he mean? Answer: "Spotting" for someone means you stand over him while he blows air up your shorts. It's an accepted practice at health clubs; though if you find that it becomes the ONLY reason why you're going in, you probably ought to reevaluate your exercise program. Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program? Answer: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain NoPain. Q: If I stop smoking, will I live longer? Answer: Nope. Smoking is a sign of individual expression and peace of mind. If you stop, you'll probably stress yourself to death in record time. Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you? Answer: You're not listening. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you? Q: What's the secret to healthy eating? Answer: Thicker gravy. Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? Answer: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach. I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about trying to live a longer and healthier life.

This month’s story comes from a trip that Sharon and I made out to Roundtop TX the last of September and first week of October. Roundtop has a antique, flea market and craft show 2 times a year. The best way to describe it is, 5 miles of highway with both sides with nothing but vendor for 1 and 2 blocks off the road. You can find anything you want if you have time to go from one end to the other end of the event. We spent 4 days there and only saw about ¼ of all of the vendors. We had a good time and found some nice things. Now to the food. I ask the motel clerk where a good place was to eat and she came up with 3 good ones. The first was Schobels restaurant about 2 blocks from where we stayed. It is owned by a German family and opened in 1979. They had fried chicken like grandma made and better than any you can find around here. The second thing was pork chops cooked on a grill. You got 2 chops and 2 sides for $10.99 with drink. These chops together would weight from 14 to 16 oz’s each. It was all we could do to eat 1 each. We took the other back to the room and made a sandwich out of it for the next day. Being German they had some of the German dishes on the menu also. Didn’t get to try any of them. The place we ate breakfast at was Beckey’s café. They serve breakfast and lunch and close by 2pm. You know this place is good when you walk in the door...this is where all the farmers and ranches go to eat breakfast. There wasn't anyone under the age of 40 in there at 8am. The good thing was that everybody spoke to you when you walked by. The 3rd place that was Dairy Cone. This is a Fifties drive-in with walk up window and covered car parking. They play the Fifties music, have a old style hamburgers and the other local favorites and ice cream cones. The cones can be soft-serve dipped if you want...and can be Blue Bell hand scooped. We ask about the Blue Bell in the restaurants and they didn’t have it yet but Dairy Cone did. I came across a man at Roundtop that was working on a pickup. We talked a little and I took a picture of his Studebaker pickup he was building. This is a 1940 and a work in progress. He has done a great job and I hope to see it when it is finished. Maybe he will show up at Cruising the Coast one day. Till we eat again J. R.

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage - November 2015 Its a long way to Mississippi. Since most kids (I mean early teens) primary means of transportation was either foot or bicycle, you either had to have a good comfortable fitting pair of Keds or a cool looking bicycle. I spent most of my springtime weekends doing mods to my bike. Taking it apart cleaning shining spokes and rims and sanding down and repainting, so I could have the coolest bike in the neighborhood. I was always ready well before summer to enjoy my ride, we used to put balloons on the forks and let the spokes rub them while riding making somewhat of a motor noise. We thought it sounded great till they popped. That first summer after my friend Mr. Q Balls death it was pretty boring, up until I had been alerted by kids in the neighborhood of a guy with a fast Falcon Sprint, they said it made a lot of noise and claimed it could go as fast as the jets. Being the kid I was and almost an expert (by my standards anyway) on all things race related. I had to meet this guy. Sure enough by chance I met him, oh it was a great looking Black Falcon Sprint with larger than normal tires out back and slightly elevated in the front red bucket seats and 4speed floor shifter and a V8 with headers. Talking to him I introduced myself he said he was called Buster, told him all about my friendship with Mr Q Ball, so I asked if I could take a ride. “Sure Kid hop in” was his response. We headed to where the I-10 was being built and there were several other cars there as well. I was introduced to street racing, what a blast I had. This became a new weekend thing I just had to do, I lived close to my cousins so I would always say that's where I was going only to catch a ride with one of the many racers and spend time riding sometimes with winners and some times the loser but always having a blast. I was later to discover this activity was illegal and we could have all gone to jail, and I would have had some explaining to do after I would be able to sit without great pains. About this time a neighbor who was almost a senior in high school and he and his dad had gone shopping for him a car to go to school in and he came home with a cool looking 30 something hot rod pickup. It had an early Chevy V8 and big tires out back and small ones in front whitewalls and moon discs on all four corners, lots of fancy things on the motor and again a 4 speed floor shifter. It was my first ride in a street rod, and a very nice one too. By no means was it a racer just a nice kind of fast truck, but it looked cool. Enjoyed several trips with him to get snow balls and some times he would drop me off for football practice in the summer, only after again promising my dad I would not try to help him fix it or take something apart. Those activities occupied my time in Kenner LA., but that would soon change. We, my siblings and I had been informed we were moving to Slidell. I was quite disappointed for you see that following year, I was to begin at East Jefferson High School, at that time it was an all boys school. Girls would almost all go to Grace King. But no I would be in Slidell, and as my cousins would constantly remind me, I would have to feed chickens, gather eggs, milk cows, feed goats, and other smelly farm animals. I hated the thought of moving to the country. How was I to live, it was going to be brutal, no friends with cool trucks, no neighbors with racecars, and I would still be in junior high. No cousins close by for an alibi and no old friends to share racing adventures with. Little did I know things were going to change and change rapidly for me. As the old saying goes all is not what it appears to be. The road to Mississippi was getting closer. Till next month ….. Gizmo

What is a Street Rod? At no time in history have Americans been as interested in specialty automobiles as they are today. Be it a rebuilt old car or a newly constructed, limited production, special interest vehicle, this is the era of the unique to anyone interested in automobiles. One of the fastest growing groups of enthusiasts interested in the older cars are street rodders; the owners and builders of street rods. A street rod is the most practical type of old car. By definition a street rod is: An automobile of 1948 or earlier manufacture which has undergone some type of modernization, to include any of the following; engine, transmission, interior refinements, and any other modifications the builder desires. A street rod is to be driven to events under its own power and is to be used as a safe, non-racing vehicle for total family enjoyment. In addition, a street rod is a means of self expression for the creator. The builder of a street rod is not confined to guidelines set down by someone else...he can be his own man, and the street rod can be whatever he wants it to be, as long as the basic vehicle was manufactured prior to 1949. The street rod builder has the option of adding a late model engine and drive train from any make of car, he can modify the suspension to give better ride and handling characteristics, and he can incorporate whatever creature comforts he wants. Air conditioning, cruise control, AM-FM stereo radios and CD players, power steering and brakes, and automatic transmissions are common. The end result is an automobile tailored to the owner's wants, and yet it is a car that has the looks and charm of a vehicle 50, 60 or even 70 years old. And, as the builder has options when it comes to adding the type of equipment he wants, he can also use as mild or as wild a paint theme as he cares to, or he can modify the lines of the body to suit his own design. The sky is the limit, and he can do whatever he wants without worrying about standards set down by someone else. One of the best parts of owning a street rod, however, is not in the creating of a unique vehicle, but in its enjoyment after it is completed. With the modernization comes the ability to enjoy the vehicle in ways other resurrected old cars can not be. The vehicle can be driven for long distances in comfort, with safety to the passengers and others on the highway. In addition to making the car more comfortable, improvements in steering, lighting and brakes are nearly always included in the building of a street rod. A street rod is a nostalgia trip, and while it retains most of the appeal of an old car, it still permits self expression by allowing the creator to incorporate his own ideas in paint, body work and the mechanics that make it go. In this era of special interest automobiles, the street rod is one of the truest forms of personalized vehicles. The National Street Rod Association produces eleven of the world's biggest and best specialty vehicle events, and provides valuable services to its membership. A main benefit is the monthly publication, StreetScene Magazine, which is mailed directly to each member's home. StreetScene provides many services only available to the membership. NSRA has a network of state representatives, all enthusiasts, to assist on a local level, and a unique, highly respected, nationwide voluntary Vehicle Safety Inspection program which is applauded by both state and national legislators. The fun part of NSRA comes in the form of activities. The premier event in the sport is the NSRA Street Rod Nationals® Plus, the world's largest automotive participant event, and it is supplemented with ten Divisional Nationals to bring the NSRA type of activity to even more parts of the U.S. The NSRA events are a combination of games, activities, mini-events and manufacturers selling trade shows, and every event is geared to family entertainment. NSRA EVENTS October 9-11 Southeast Street Rod Nationals Plus. Florida State Fairgrounds, Tampa, Florida The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year. www.streetrod101.com/safetyinspection.html

David and Linda Daniels from Grantsburg, Indiana would like to thank everyone associated with CTC. Our week there started by finding out that our '61 Chevy would be on the Night Cruise Shirt, then WLOX put us on the 6 O'clock News, then we won somebody else's fuzzy dice trophy, because they weren't there. And finally as we were leaving "D'iberville Barney" stopped us and gave us the best ticket we ever got! This was our 2nd time to Cruise the Coast, but it was the best car event we've ever done. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! We'll be back!

Cruisin’ The Coast has come and gone. It’s always amazing the anticipation I have for this event. It seems like it will never get here and then it goes by so fast. The weather this year was perrrrfect! The Hot Rod Show was booked the first weekend of Cruisin” The Coast twice. Saturday we played the 12th Annual Cruisin Keesler, a beautiful setting on Keesler Air Force Base under gorgeous 100 year old oak trees on the banks of Back Bay Biloxi. We got up at 5 am on Saturday morning and was going through the equipment gate at Keesler at 7:30 am. That was interesting as we had to undergo inspection of our Hot Rod Show trailer with mirrors on rods looking underneath and an inspection of the inside of the trailer. That after all the pre-paper work a week earlier for base entry and being set up to be paid as a base vendor. I did not mind at all. 911 has changed a lot of things and if you know me, you know I’m pro military all the way. The Airmen were great any way and really liked the trailer. We got set up for Cruisin’ Keesler and started the music about 9 am and kicked off the show at 10 am with a Veteran’s Tribute and the playing of the national anthem. Great turnout of cars, great conversations with Veterans and cruisers. Auto Zone supplied us with great door prizes all day. At lunch they fed us all free hamburgers, chips and drinks. At 3 pm over 40 awards were handed out to the cruisers. We loaded up and made it home about 6 pm after stopping to eat.

Now it was time to start thinking about View The Cruise in downtown Gulfport. Saturday night about 9pm I headed down to downtown Gulfport to get the Hot Rod Show trailer into position for the Sunday show. When I arrived there were too many cars in the way to position the trailer where I needed it to be. So it was on to Plan B. I decided I would take the trailer back home, which I did and set my alarm clock for 4 am. I got to bed about midnight after watching some SEC Football. Woke up at 4 am and went back downtown and got the trailer in position and came back home and went back to bed for about another hour of sleep. Back up at 7 am and back downtown. It took about an hour to set the trailer up for the show. We started the music at 9 am. Had the official Kickoff of Cruisin The Coast with the View The Cruise Opening Ceremony at 10 am with Gulfport City Councilman RLee Flowers, Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes and Rev Claire Dobbs of First United Methodist Church of Gulfport, the Veterans Tribute for all Veterans in attendance and the playing of the national anthem. We had two sound systems going and rocked downtown Gulfport. There were 100’s and 100’s of cars and 1000’s and 1000’s of people. The Hot Rod Show trailer handed out free door prize tickets and Auto Zone provided great door prizes all day. The party went until 5 pm. The mayor and city councilman were elated with the show and as I write the column, we have a meeting scheduled next week to make View The Cruise even bigger and better next year. These guys really get it.

Tuesday I had to work. Wednesday Scotty and I got up at 5 am, jumped in the ’65 Mustang and headed down to Biloxi to get a spot for the Biloxi Block Party. We got a really good spot on Main Street, we lucked out, parked and headed over to The Schooner for a fine breakfast.

Monday I took off work to recover, Monday night we’re in Long Beach to see the Tip Tops. One of my favorite bands I have to see every year on Monday night at the harbor. We take Cam, our new Chinese granddaughter with us in the ’65 Mustang. It was her first time to see a live band and she danced for three hours, only slowing down to take a sip of water in between songs. She loved it. Plus I was able to finish restoring her retro tri-cycle I’d been working on. Her first Hot Rod! She loved it also.

We walked and looked a little and then it was time for me to work a little bit. I work for SuperTalk MS, a statewide News, Talk and Sports Network. We brought in The JT Show for three hours live from the Biloxi Town Green to promote Cruisin The Coast statewide. After the remote broadcast was finished it was time to cruise. Thursday I had to work and I took off Friday. Friday I had to get everything ready for the Coast Cruizers 4Th Annual Mega Cruize-in at Edgewater Mall Saturday night, we did manage to get a little cruising in on Friday. Saturday morning, we had to get the Hot Rod Show trailer into a pre-staging position for Saturday afternoon. We cruised a little Saturday morning after dropping off the truck and trailer and then back home to get ready for Saturday night. We left home about 3 pm and it took us 45 minutes going the back way with the traffic to get back to the mall. At 4:45 we staged the trailer and at 5:10 we moved the trailer into position for the Coast Cruizers Mega Cruize-in. We were up and running at 5:30. At 6 we did the Veterans Tribute and kicked off the Mega Cruize-in with the national anthem. Auto Zone loaded us down with door prizes. Most of the door prizes were valued at $50-$100 and we gave away up to 7 door prizes every 15 minutes until 9 pm. Our Mega 50/50 was $2,830. It was a crazy madhouse but I love it. But it is so stressful, I’m glad it only comes around once a year. Cruisin’ The Coast is over and once again…how do you tell someone how great of a car show it truly is, the size, the scope of this show is beyond words, it’s beyond pictures and it’s beyond description. The only thing we can do is invite cruisers and tell them it’s great, but you’ll just have to experience it for yourself. Now…you can put the hot rod back into your garage and start those winter projects, it’s the only time you’ll get, because spring will be here before you know it and it’ll start all over again! til next month… Terry terry@supertalk.fm Facebook: Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show Hear a demo of the Hot Rod Show on Facebook by searching for Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show” and “Like Us” while you’re there or search for “Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show” on YouTube.com or contact Terry @ 228.669.8122

Nancy and I attended the 12th annual Scarecrow Cruise & Car Show in Madison, MS October 16th & 17th. Madison is just a few miles north of Jackson, MS but this town has that small town feel. There is plenty to see and do while you are in town. Antique stores, great places to eat, and hundreds of cars-n-trucks filled with friendly folks. Saturday morning the show grounds on the Tulane University campus, filled up quickly as the five hundred and forty six registered cars took their spots. Spectators must have numbered in the thousands as they strolled along the isles of show vehicles. Vendors of all kinds were on hand to sell, display, or offer you free services. Plenty of local folks just being friendly and wanting to take part in this event. What I like most about this show is that the Mississippi Classic Cruisers and the town of Madison have joined together to support this show. You see the proceeds from this event benefit Mississippi SIDS and Infant Safety Alliance and Hope Hollow Ministries. If you haven't attended this show, put it on your 2016 calendar of things to do……….. Jimbo

Back in my day a clown car was usually a Model T Ford, shortened by the length of its drive shaft. The drive shaft was eliminated and the rear axle was connected directly to the transmission. This allowed the vehicle to have the correct balance to produce prolonged wheel stands and antics that would delight the crowd. With the two rear brakes set up with separate brake controls they could also spin around in circles by locking up one brake at a time. The operator could also steer the car by locking one brake at a time, much the same way heavy equipment is guided. Peggy was built by the Lawrenceburg, Indiana American Legion. This was an object of great pride and hard work provided by the members of this organization. Two men rode on the raised rear seat back providing the perfect counterweight. A Pegasus was constructed on the hood and a 5th man rode on top of it. This beautifully engineered machine participated in numerous parades and was the pride of the town of Lawrenceburg. It is still on display at the American Legion in Lawrenceburg.

Roy Repp was another individual that traveled the United States with his stunt car. Roy was an Australian stunt driver, and one of his stunt cars was Maud, the Motor Mule. Maud was a 1924 Buick. For this car he would pull a lever and a heavy weight beneath the car would move forward or backward to shift the center of gravity, causing the car to stand up on its rear wheels or the front wheels. Whether other clown cars imitated Roy Repp’s movable weight system is unknown. What is known is that other cars were built by Charlie Schultz and Clem Grobbel that had similar characteristics. Whoever came first, it is a fact that altered wheel bases and some fancy pedal work allowed these cars to entertain many people during their time and brought smiles to lots of faces, both young and old.

Victory Kiss By Candy Cocktail If there is one photo that always pops into my retro-loving mind when I think of the military, it is the infamous V-J Day photograph from Life Magazine in 1945. The image has become an icon, inspiring events, art and the romantic at heart for the past 70 years since it was first published. The notable photograph was taken on one of the most influential days in our history: the day that World War II came to an end. President Harry S. Truman announced the incredible news and spontaneous jubilation spread throughout Times Square. On August 27, 1945, the issue of Life Magazine that featured the photo came out on newsstands. Still iconic so many years later, it was not originally a cover photo. It was on page 27, yet the charm the photo captured is evident even today. Japan actually announced its surrender to the United States on August 15, but because of the time difference, the news of the surrender reached New York on August 14. Axis forces had already surrendered to the Allies in Europe three months earlier following Hitler's suicide inside his bunker in Berlin on April 30, meaning VJ Day effectively marked the end of the Second World War. Japan's official surrender did not come until September 2, when dignitaries were assembled on the deck of the Missouri to sign the Potsdam Deceleration, and that date was declared by President Harry Truman to be VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day. The photo, by Alfred Eisenstaedt, is also called V-Day, The Kiss and Victory Kiss. It has become a cultural icon. Eisenstaedt established his copyright on the photo and carefully controlled the rights to it, only allowing limited reproductions which determined how it could be used. As Eisenstaedt said, "I was very lucky because I found this man ... grabbing any and every girl in sight, whether she was a grandmother, stout, thin, old, thick... it didn't make any difference." As crowds and celebration spread, the photographer did not have a chance to learn the identities of the subjects in his photo. Among the sea of people, the photograph does not clearly show the face of either person involved and several people have claimed to be the subjects. As the mystery of the kissers grew, so did the hype surrounding the photo. There are actually 2 men and women who have been found by further investigation to, with good likelihood, be the smooching sailor and his lady. Nurse Edith Shain identified herself as the nurse in the photo, but it was determined that she was much too short in comparison to the sailor. In 2007, Glenn McDuffie made the claim that he was the man in the influential photo. After analyzing key facial features and comparing those to the enlargements of Eisenstaedt's picture, a Houston Police Department forensic artist told CNN that Glenn McDuffie was in fact the kisser.

However, the most plausible evidence of the man and woman in the photo points to George Mendonsa and Greta Friedman. They were not a pair of sweethearts in love. Quite the contrary, they were complete strangers! The second and most likely female star of the photo, Greta Friedman, was actually a dental assistant, not a nurse. Wearing a nurse's uniform was customary in a dentist's office by female assistants and hygienists in that era. The kissee first saw the photo in the 1960s, when she instantly recognized her outfit, figure and her hair. According to the book, The Kissing Sailor: The Mystery Behind the Photo George Mendonsa and Greta Friedman (above) that Ended World War II, Greta was born in Austria. She escaped Europe with her sisters and came to the United States. Her parents later died in the Holocaust. As for Greta’s suitor, it was then 22 year old George Mendonsa of Newport, Rhode Island, on leave from the USS The Sullivans (DD-537). Even more surprising is that this famous kisser was actually on a date, with another woman. He and his date, Rita, were watching a movie at Radio City Music Hall when the doors popped open and people started screaming that the war was over. The couple ran out to join the party that erupted in the streets. They stopped in a bar to, as George says, pop a few back. He says he had quite a few drinks and when he saw the nurse, he grabbed her. He said he simply considered her one of the troops. That day, Rita watched as her date and future husband planted a kiss on the mouth of a stranger. Rita gets annoyed when women get offended and ask her why she was not mad at him. "I was in the background, grinning like a mutt," she told CNN in 2005. "So it didn't matter to me." It wasn’t until 1980 that Mendonsa first saw the photo. A friend called him to ask where he was when the war ended. When he replied with Times Square, his friend, looking at the photo in Life Magazine, knew it was George kissing the nurse. His tattoos and scars were used as the key identifiers. George noticed his large hands as well as a small bump inside the left arm that he says is seen in the photo and a scar from a barroom fight above his right eye. According to the NY Post, Mendonsa was identified by a team of volunteers from the Naval War College in August 2005. The team used photographic analysis and Yale University professor of photography Richard Benson examined the photo, along with three others to find that he was in fact the famous kisser and that Greta was the nurse. They studied the ears, nose, scars, muscle tone, and even records of where each person was on the day of the photo.

The image has been immortalized in a series of statues called Unconditional Surrender. The artist, Seward Johnson, created the 25-foot tall giant smooching sailor and nurse to resemble the WWII photo. However his statues are a copy of the almost identical, yet less popular photograph of the same kiss by Victor Jorgensen. The image is simply a different angle of the same scene in Eisenstaedt’s V-J Day in Times Square. The original statue was installed in Sarasota, Florida. I have been to visit the statue many times as Sarasota is a nearby city to where I live. It was then was moved to San Diego, California in 2007 and to New York City, New York in August of 2015 for a "Times Square Kiss-In" event. There are copies in Hamilton, New Jersey, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and Normandy, France. It is prominent in pop culture, with regular nods to the photo in the media. It has been featured in movies such as Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, TV shows like The Simpsons, and on stage. In 2012 singer Katy Perry picked an audience member to help her recreate the scene during her NYC Fleet Week performance. This August New York City hosted a mass re-enactment of the kiss. The event to recreate the iconic picture that marked the end of the Second World War takes place every 5 years. White sailor caps and red roses are given to the first 200 couples. There were sailors and smooching everywhere as hundreds of couples came to Times Square to recreate the image that kissed the war goodbye.

As the days go by, (at age 88) I try to keep this column interesting, even tho the dirt tracks are slowly disappearing. In my active driving time (1948 to 1962) the midgets (62" to 72") wheel base were the talk of the country. In 1947 Danny Oakes (well known and famous midget driver) went with Johnny Balch (car owner) to the salt flats of Bonneville, Utah, and turned 137 mph in a 850 lb, 90 cubic inch Offenhauser engined Kurtis Kraft midget. Danny won many races, but his big reputation came from Gilmore Stadium, where all the Hollywood people came to watch, in then down town Los Angeles. The roll cages, and roll bars started about 1959 or 1960 after Mel Kenyon (USAC Champion) lost a left hand and part of his arm in a bad crash with other cars and the fence. After that crash the cages and roll bars came out, and the crowds quit coming! The excitement wasn't quite there any more. I bought my midget from Frank Kurtis in 1952 and sold it in 1960, as my pal "Hoke" would say, I'll bury the car before I'll put roll bars and a cage on it! I was in complete agreement. When I sold it, it was clean, no bars, or cage. The midgets held most all 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 mile track records until 1956. Kettering of GMC made the Olds Rocket 88 that came out in 1949, but it was too heavy, and until the V-8 from Chevy came out, the sprints ran a 220 Offy which wasn't fast enough to be a problem on 1/2 mile or under. Sprint Associates soon started "joint shows" (or I should say the track owner-promoters did! Dirt was the way to go! Here in Gulfport & Bay St. Louis was a great (1/3?) dirt track, and it was fast! However, it met the same end as all dirt tracks. Gone! Noise ordinance! I've done enough complaining, lets talk about tracks that were not dirt not brick and not asphalt! I'm speaking of "the boards". This was the year of 1920, Beverly Hills, Ca. as you know it today, built a 2 mile board track, hi banks, using 2 x 6 lumber! Banks were 30 degrees and speeds were in the 120's (in 1920). Tires were not a problem as they are today. Gaston Chevrolet was driving a Frontenac race car (company owned by him and his brothers Louis and Arthur) called Frontenac Motor Co. Louis had started the Chevrolet Motor Co. and sent for Arthur and Gaston, in 1916 the 3 founded Frontenac. On lap 146 of 200 he crashed and was killed. He had just finished winning the Indy 500 in May in a Frontenac, and he moved the racing team to Los Angeles to run the board track at Beverly Hills. He was 28 years old. Gaston had broken the dominance of European Race Cars at Indy with that win. Following his May 31, 1920 victory at the Indy 500, he won a 100 mile match race against Tommy Milton and Ralph Mulford. Milton became the #1 driver for the Duisenberg Factory. Winning the National Championship and winning the Beverly Hills board track race when Gaston Chevrolet crashed on lap 146 of 200. Enter Jimmy Murphy, "King of the Boards" who was first a riding mechanic in the race around the city of Corona, Ca. and found his way into becoming the #2 driver for the Duisenberg team. This happened due to the friendship with Tommy Milton the #1 driver who told the factory that Jimmy was "real good" and "give him the #2 car". Murphy driving the "Dusy" went on to win the French Grand Prix (Lemans) in 1921, and Indy 500 in 1922. He was the first American to win a Grand Prix race in an American car (Duisenberg). Many years later, Dan Gurney, with his "All American Racers" was the 2nd to duplicate Murphy’s feat! Murphy was born "James Arthur Murphy" in San Francisco 1894 and died 1924 in Syracuse, New York at a one mile fairgrounds dirt track, that a friend was promoting and talked him into running. As I have

mentioned before, the one mile dirt (or larger) horse tracks don't have crash walls, only spaced fencing to keep horses on the track! Well, Jimmy "took her in the corner" (like asphalt style 4 wheel drift) and took the lead, however, he then went thru the fence, took a fence post thru his chest, and died at the track! The "Fairgrounds Mile" is still at Phoenix, Az. A great true story about one of my racing friends (Jimmy Bryan) native of Phoenix, Indy winner, and one hell of a good race car driver! Anyway, after winning Indy, they had a "Champ" car race at the mile dirt fairgrounds track at Phoenix. In the old days the midget, sprint, champ, and Indy cars all looked pretty much a like, up until the rear engines came to pass, from England. Well Jimmy entered the race and was running 2nd when going into the last turn of the last lap the leader "lost it" going in and forced Bryan thru the fence, he stood on the gas, came back on the track thru the pit gate, and won the race!! The crowd went nuts! Back to Chevrolet brothers Louis, Arthur, and Gaston, the two serving brothers lived to 1941 and 1948 respectively. Louis, (who formed Chevrolet) was also a very good racer, but after the death of Gaston, he wasn't too interested in going to, or driving in races. Louis was born in Switzland brought to USA in 1919. Louis finished 7th at Indy 500, ahead of Gaston in 10th. As an after thought, Jimmy Murphy, owned his car when winning the Indy 500! He died at the age of 30 after winning the Indy 500 at 28! One has to mention Union Town, Pa. when talking of "the boards". The track was started in 1916 and finished as the USA started voted to enter the World War #1 in 1917. Barney Oldfield was the "mentor" and teacher of Tommy Milton the #1 driver of the American Duisenberg team, who won the race that Gaston Chevrolet lost & died at Beverly Hills Speedway. Did you know that Henry Ford ordered all shipped in parts to be in oak crates and would return them if not in those crates! Why? Well, the early Fords (Model "T"‘s and such) had wooden floorboards and of course they were made of oak! Did you know that the middle pedal (on the floor) was the reverse gear? In the hill country forest in Oregon where I lived, there was one hill that my dad had to pull off the road, turn around and back up the hill in reverse, (when we had over 4 people in the car). (reverse had the lowest gear ratio) The other reason to "back up" the hill was due to the gas tank being located under the windshield and was gravity feed to the carburetor on the motor. So, backing up, you had lower gear ratio and positive gas feed to the engine! My first car was a 1926 "T" pick up. It was 1941 and I was 14 years old. I picked berries, cut hay, weed, beets, peas, melons etc. I paid $8.00 for the "T" and gasoline was 11 cents a gallon at the Shell Station. My dad (see photo) told me to always use Shell because that’s what the airplanes used! I was allowed a "special" drivers permit to be used only to haul produce, (we had Cherry trees, Apple, Pear, Walnuts, that we sold and canned). By the way did you know that RFD on postal boxes and address data stands for "Rural Free Delivery? Don't look for anything free anymore? Want to know the latest on why the gas prices are dropping? The story goes that Germany, Japan, England, and others have developed a solar powered motor (it will also run on batteries only) and it will be adios to gasoline! Pin-up model extraordinaire! - Miss Rhonda Nelson -

Story & Photos by: Denise “Neecy” Meyer Many people have asked me, “Who is the “Mustang Sally” in the October issue of Gulf Coast Motor Sports magazine?” As you may have noticed in the October issue of this publication, we featured a lovely model in the article about Barry Barone and his world famous restoration company B & B Motorsports. Well, here is the answer to the mystery! This beautiful little lady’s name is Rhonda Nelson. Originally from southeast Texas, Rhonda moved to Baton Rouge her sophomore year of high school, now she is back in Texas to finish college. I met Rhonda a few years ago at the “Hell on Heels” car show in Gonzales, Louisiana. She was a stand-out contestant in the pinup contest and of course won the competition. I’ve seen her at several other pinup contests since then, and she has won most of them. I asked Rhonda what prompted her to compete in pinup contests, and she told me that she would go to car shows with her Dad and he encouraged her to participate. “I will never be able to thank him enough for everything he has done for my Mom and Me.” She said. “Competing in the pinup contests make me feel great and I enjoy meeting other women that enjoy is as much as I do.” Rhonda and her father have been desperately trying to get started on building a rat rod together, but between his work, her work and travel they haven’t been able to fulfill that dream yet. They have gone to the junk yard a few times to collect parts or unique things that would The fall weather is perfect for loose sweaters and light scarves! When we finally get started on it, it will be the mother of all rats!” (and I can’t wait to be able to photograph that Rhonda!) “Getting into cars and going to the shows is one of the best things in my life. There is nothing better than good times, good people, fine cars and the never-ending support of my Mom and Dad!” ~Neecy **The 1965 Mustang pictured with Rhonda is a beautiful specimen done by Barry Barone at B & B Motorsports. We wanted to depict the crisp and clean look of fall, and a beautiful woman with her horses.

2015 R.O.D.S. Run - 8/24/2015 Baton Rouge, Louisiana Written by Bobby Spann R.O.D.S. Secretary

The Ramblin' Oldies of Denham Springs car club still has a good old 3day rod run every February in Baton Rouge, Louisiana! Formed in 1978, the Ramblin' Oldies of Denham Springs car club has a lot of history in the capitol city and currently we have 43 active club members! Our “37th Annual R.O.D.S. Run” held late February in 2015 was really something to see. Some of the finest street rods in the Southeast attended, including several NSRA national winners and cars from as far away as Illinois and Oklahoma! The RODS club members really come together each year to pull off our signature event, which is held at the Holiday Inn South in Baton Rouge. Situated at a main intersection of I-12 and Airline Highway, the hotel boasts a huge atrium and three swimming pools, one even goes inside under the glass wall! Add an indoor hot tub, full service restaurant, bar and very nice grounds… perfect for a car show. Friday night early arrivals were treated to an all you can eat fried fish dinner! It was really nice to sit inside and visit with friends. Each registrant this year was given a goody bag packed with discount coupons, catalogs, hats and lots of items of interest. And as usual the RODS club had collected enough nice door prices for every entrant! The 37th annual event t-shirts featured Carl & Marcia Cox's 1948 Chevy pro-street pickup truck. The theme was the 'capitol city' with backgrounds of the Mississippi River Bridge on one side of the shirt and the old State capitol on the other. That's right, we are probably the only car club in the country that prints a different design of the same car on the front and back of our shirts! Saturday everyone gathered in the main parking lot to look at cars and visit with each other. And the early birds headed straight for the big swap meet to pick up a deal before the crowds built up. The Holiday Inn South is a perfect place for the rod run each year, and “Homer T” was playing 50's tunes all weekend, which really added to the atmosphere. Around lunchtime we gave out around 40 sponsor picks to deserving winners. And via 50/50 tickets, raffles and donations we were able to raise $3,000.00 for the Hospice Foundation of Baton Rouge this year. They have helped so many people, including our club member's families. So it is really nice to be able to “give back” to them. Saturday afternoon everyone gathered near the hotel to hear Rock-a-Billy music from “The Conrads.” The band was really wailing, right next to all the hot rods with a lead guitar, drums and our own Peter Burrows on stand-up bass… There was even some dancing going on in the parking lot! Several vendors were set up in the parking lot and for several years now we have built up our (free) swap meet. Food and soft drinks were available on site by the hotel's caterer, and a free shuttle bus was running ladies to the Mall of Louisiana all day from the front entrance! That is a popular part of the RODS run with their specialty shops and restaurants. Speaking of restaurants, Saturday night everyone headed out to their favorite for a great meal. Baton Rouge is well known for our seafood, so that is another popular part of having a show in Louisiana's capitol city! Afterward participants hung out in the parking lot swapping stories and visiting. Sunday morning NSRA State Rep Larry Teal presented a short church service in the parking lot while his wife Louise sang hymns. Our awards ceremony kicked off with specialty awards and then the Top Ten trophies. Registered participants vote on the cars they liked the most, and then members of the RODS club counted the ballots. It was close but finally club president Danny Frederic and rod run coordinator Lee Laurent handed out special framed event artwork to the following:

After lunch on Saturday “The Conrads” played some wild Rock -a-Billy music in the parking lot. London born Peter Burrows on stand up bass is also a member of the Ramblin Oldies of Denham Springs and drives a cool ’27 T roadster!

Two time machines, these were original 1960’s hot rods. Barn finds that run! Everything was period perfect and they drove them to the run

The inside of the ’32 coupe was like a museum with everything like it was almost 50 years ago! You can’t find a more typical interior for the time period.

With that kind of music it’s hard NOT to dance. King Hardeman and Pam Rhodes cut the asphalt to the tunes of “The Conrads.”

Carl Cox in front of his pro-street ’48 Chevy pickup. His car graced the event t-shirts this year at the RODS Run

There were several t-buckets at the RODS Run in Baton Rouge. And this one was one of the better. Shelly Spann and Grayson Jackson stop to pose by the low hot rod.

It's always sad to see everyone drive off, but we know we will see most of them throughout the year at other shows! We would like to thank our sponsors, who without their help each year the RODS Run would not be possible: Gerry Lane Enterprises, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Metro Color, Baton Rouge Harley Davidson, Bruno's Body Shop, Roy's Ice, L&T Signs, Capitol Auto Paint, AutoZone and The Holiday Inn South. I know this dude who always had an infatuation with Nuns. One day he had an encounter with one in an elevator. He told her very awkwardly, that he something he would like to share with her, but was afraid to say. She told him it was alright, just relax and take his time and say it. He said, “I have always wondered what it would be like to kiss a Nun “. She said, “WOW, I see what you mean”. Well, to tell you the truth, if that was to happen, you would first have to be a catholic and of course single”. He said, “I’m a catholic and single”. The Nun said, “Well, I guess perhaps it would be ok”. So the dude leaned over to give her a little kiss, however, the Nun latched on to him with a lip lock that was very unsuspected, probably because she hadn’t kissed a man in many years. When it was all over, the dude said, “I must confess, I’m not really a catholic”. She said, “That’s alright, I’m not really a Nun. I’m really a man in a Nun’s costume on my way to a costume party”. Sometimes you can’t make this stuff up!......... Cuz’s proverb---Friends don’t lend stuff to friends, because soon you will run out of stuff, then you will run out of friends…. My ole lady was about leave for work when she said, “Baby if you decide to leave the house would you please make sure the stove is off and check the coffee pot also. Turn off all lights, bring the garbage out, and don’t forget to lock all the doors”. I said, “WOMAN, QUIT PUTTING ALL THAT PRESSURE ON ME LIKE THAT”!! The sacrifices I have to make sometimes aren’t worth it. Till next time Cuz-------JustBeCuz Check out my ad near the end of Motor Sports Magazine I do magic now

There was once a sheep farmer who needed help with the difficult task of castrating some of his inferior male sheep to keep them from breeding with the females. He hired a French guy who didn't speak much English, but was a very good worker. After the first day, they had successfully castrated 14 sheep and his French worker was just about to throw away the "parts", but the sheep farmer yelled, "No! Don't throw those away! My wife fries them up and we eat them. They're delicious, and we call them 'sheep fries'." Later that day, the French hired hand came in for supper and, indeed, the "sheep fries" were tasty. The next day, they castrated 16 sheep, and that evening they all settled down to another supper of "sheep fries". The third day, however, when the sheep farmer came home, he asked his wife where the French hired hand was. "You know, it's the weirdest thing," she said. "I told him since there weren't very many 'sheep fries' this evening, we were also going to have French fries, and he ran like hell!" A biker walks into a bar and notices his friend sitting alone staring at a tiny man on the table playing the piano. "Wow, look how small he is, where did you get him?!" Says the man. "Oh, well there's this genie round the back of bar, and he grants you whatever wish you want." Sure enough, the man goes round the back of the bar and there sits a genie. "You grant wishes right?" "Yes." replies the genie. "Hmm, I'd like a million bucks." Then, out of nowhere, a million ducks appear, and waddle behind the annoyed man as he goes back into the bar. "Look, that genie gave me ducks instead of bucks!" His friends sitting at the table replies, "Well yeah, do you really think I asked for a twelve inch pianist?"
