Photographer Janice Johnt gives us the chance to check out what's under this wheel stander. Gassers are returning to the Dragstrips and boy am I glad they are coming back. Most of us went to “the Track” shortly after we got our drivers license. There wasn’t the Cruise-in’s & car shows like we have today but the Dragstrip had lots of show cars. When you think back to “them days” we wanted to find out what class our car was in. so we could paint it on the window.

George Klasss puts it this way. The official class name was “Gas Coupe & Sedan” class, which was soon rounded off to just a Gasser class. A Gasser is (or was) basically a stock production type vehicle with a hopped-up engine. A stock car with a non-stock engine as it were. And the engine did not need to be the same brand as the car. For instance, an old Ford coupe with a later model Oldsmobile engine would fit right into a Gasser class.

Eventually, different classes were created for different combinations, especially with the supercharged entries. The top and fastest class was called the AA/GS class.

All the cars were classified by dividing the weight of the car by the cubic inches of engine displacement. This would then give us the “weight per cubic inch”, which would then define which class the car would compete in. A 3000 pound car with a 300 cubic inch engine would work out to “10 pounds per cubic inch”, for instance. Thanks George georgeklass.net/gassers Little by little, pay day to pay day we hopped up our cars. JC Whittney, Pep-Boys and our local Speed Shop got most of it. But I always had money to go to the track. Sometimes it was the town legend taking on a challenger, or maybe a bunch of cars from another track would show up and show us what they had.

Those sure were great times back then and now they are back.

Stop feeding your kids Rice Krispies. It is not absorbed in your body in a healthy manner. It is stored in your body and the effects become visible when you are older.

I used to eat Rice Krispies and now that I am older I can testify to the effects of this.

Every morning when I wake up and get out of bed, everything in my body snaps, crackle and pops.

Paul Wilson Jimbo, I remember taking a plane trip for the first time in my life, and I was just a little nervous. Not too long after they take off, the pilot is making his usual welcome announcements over the PA system.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Captain. I would like to welcome you aboard Tree Top Airlines. We are flying non-stop from New Orleans to Dallas, and I expect a smooth and uneventful flight. Just sit back and enjoy the - - - OH MY GOD !!!"

Then . . . nothing but silence. A minute later, the pilot comes over the PA again, "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sorry if I scared you back there, but the stewardess brought me a hot cup of coffee and accidently spilled it in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!"

Breathing a huge sigh of relief, I told the passenger next to me, " he should see the back of mine !!!"

Yesterday my pastor spoke about “The Potter’s Touch” (Jeremiah 18:1-10). Once again my mind drifted toward cars.

Not toward my next project, but how this passage is just like working on old cars.

I very rarely start a new project from a clean sheet of paper. Most of my projects begin from a tired box of parts, long since forgotten by their past owners. Just like us, cars have a heart and soul just waiting to be set free from the past.

I have found, every project need a vision. A vision of what parts will be required, a vision of what the final appearance will look like, and most important, a vision of what it’s purpose will be. My goal, in any project, is to create something special from the parts I have to work with, as does a potter with his clay.

Sometimes I see myself as a box of parts. Some old, some new, some in need of repair. I think God sees us in that way too. When we mess up, He doesn’t throw us away and start over. He picks up our broken parts and molds them back into the vision He had all along. Even the stubborn parts can be fixed!

I invite you to join me in asking God to fix our broken parts, and mold us back into his vision.

I went to McDonald's for a burger & fries, and there, once again, got a surprise. The clerk poured some coffee which he handed to me, he said, 'For Seniors the coffee is free.'

Understand, I'm not old, I'm merely mature: but some things are changing, temporarily, I'm sure the newspaper print gets smaller each day, and people speak softer: can't hear what they say.

My teeth are my own: I have the receipt! My glasses identify the people I meet. Oh, I've slowed down a bit, not a lot, I'm sure you see I'm not old, I'm only mature.

The gold in my hair has been bleached by the sun. You should see all the damage that chlorine has done washing my hair has turned it all white, but don't call it grey, saying 'blonde' is just right.

My car is all paid for, not a cent is owed. Yet a kid yells, 'Old duffer, get off the road! My car has no scratches, not even a dent. Still I get all that guff from a punk who's 'Hell bent.'

My friends all get older, much faster than me. They seem much more wrinkled, from what I can see I've got 'character lines', not wrinkles I'm sure. But don't call me old, just call me mature.

The steps in the houses they're building today are so high that they take your breath all away: And the streets are much steeper than ten years ago. That should explain why walking is slow.

But I'm keeping up on what's hip and what's new. And I think I can still dance a swing or two. I'm still in the running, in this I'm secure. No, I'm not old, I'm only mature!'

Are you concerned about the age of your tires? This quick guide will show you how to find the manufacturer date of your tire. Look for the DOT date code on the tire.

Find the raised letters and numbers. Look for the numbers together, often enclosed in a raised oval.

The first two numbers are the week the tire was manufactured, for instance example below, 35 stands for week 35.

The second two numbers are the year the tire was manufactured. And the image below we see the 07, indicating the tire was built in 2007 this particular tire was made the 35th week of 2007.

We recommend not letting your tires be more than 4 years old regardless of how good the tread looks.

Jimbo, On June 6 my Dad, Pete Bloss, was treated to a trip to the WWII Museum in New Orleans by Christian Hogan wife of Dr. Hogan.

They chartered a couple buses and took a group of Veterans to see the museum. They also saw a show at the Canteen and had lunch. My brother Pete, Jr accompanied our Dad and took the pictures. It was a great Father-Son bonding time.

The picture of the 1951 pickup was my Dad when he started Pete's Service after returning from

serving in Okinawa in the Seabees in WWII. He's the one on the left. The fella on the right is my Uncle Art Overstreet. We don't remember who is in the middle...Looks a little like a young Elvis...Who knows‌. Pat

Jimbo, How my Grandchildren perceive their Grandparents... my favorite is the last one.

1. She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she'd done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!" I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye.

2. My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday.

He asked me how old I was, and I told him, "80". My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"

3. After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin.

Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?" 4. A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony.

We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking all this in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"

5. My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo and replied, "No, how are we alike?'' "You're both old," he replied.

6. A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it about?", he asked. "I don't know", she replied. "I can't read."

7. I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!"

8. When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to avoid attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights."

9. When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." "Look in your underwear, Grandpa", he advised, "Mine says 'I'm 4 to 6'."

10. A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today."

The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool.

"That's interesting." she said . . . "How do you make babies?" "It's simple", replied the little girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es'."

11. Children's Logic: "Give me a sentence about a public servant", said a teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder, pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?", she asked. "Sure", replied the young boy confidently. 'It means carrying a child."

12. A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's duties.

"They use him to keep crowds back", said one child. "No", said another.

"He's just for good luck." A third child brought the argument to a close.

"You're both wrong . They use the dogs", she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrants."

13. A 6-year-old was asked where his grandma lived. "Oh," he said, "she lives at the airport, and when we want her, we just go get her. Then, when we're done having her visit, we take her back to the airport."

14. Grandpa is the smartest man on earth! He teaches me good things, but I don't get to see him enough to get as smart as him!

This is how it manifests: I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mail box earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys on the table, Put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first... But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, So I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of beer I'd been drinking as I am going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the beer aside So that I don't accidentally knock it over.

The beer is getting warm, and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the beer, A vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye--they need water. I put the beer on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk, But first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when I go to watch TV, I'll be looking for the remote, But I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, So I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the

flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. I go to the man cave, and get a cold beer.

Do you remember what I was going to do?

At the end of the day: The car isn't washed, the bills aren't paid, there is a warm can of beer sitting on the counter, the flowers don't have enough water, there is still only 1 check in my check book, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses, and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day, And I'm really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail...well, that's where I am now.

Oh, My! I found my glasses. I guess I left them here, or brought them, or something.

AKA Poppys Garage AUGUST 2018

I sure hope everyone is having a great summer, I will soon be having a very good vacation so to speak. We, the Queen and I, will be attending the Street Rod Nationals in Louisville Kentucky. It is always a good time for me, not so much her, but this year I will endeavor to do more than just walk around in a daze being awed by all of the various cars in attendance.

We will attempt to do more visiting of the historical places in and around Louisville. I will let you all know how that goes.

While I am on the subject of travel, I would be remiss if I don't touch on safe travels and making sure ones vehicle of choice is up to the rigors of a road trip. We always check our fluids, belts and hoses, but there are several items that are often overlooked. The tires are most likely the ones that at times get overlooked. I know many folks check the air pressure occasionally, many don't however, and the newer cars have tire pressure monitoring systems that report low as well as high tire pressure. And many of us don't regularly look at the tread depth or wear patterns. Lots can be learned from those quick looks. And those tire issues could be a tell tale sign of other problems in the steering suspension area.

Another item that is quite often overlooked are the lights, front and rear, side markers and tag lighting, I make a habit of checking these things on our daily drivers every few months. I also recommend changing your wiper blades at least yearly, because many of our daily drivers sit outside and the sun does wonders on those little rubber strips that dearly aid in rainy situations.

And if you are driving a street rod or an older classic or muscle car it might not be a bad idea to get a safety inspection from one of our NSRA Safety Reps. Its free, takes a short time and is always a good idea to have another set of eyes to checkout your favorite old car. These folks are not there to criticize, but to help make you aware of any issue that may cause your fun with cars to turn in to a bad experience. They do this out of caring for every ones safety as we travel the roads. And once again its free, and if your car or truck passes you get a nice little sticker, and the assurance your ride is good to go.

It's time to get a few things together, checkout the Queens chariot, and plan some new adventures in Louisville, and also to Say Happy Birthday to both the Queen and my Son in the coming weeks. Maybe I can take a few hundred pictures while in Louisville and still not get it all.

The Street Rod National will have their Golden Anniversary 50 years August 1-4,2019. The NSRA have been working on this several years to make this a very special National. They are trying to gather as many of the past 36 giveaway cars as possible for a special display. They also are gathering for a memorabilia display highlighting the past 50 years. They are looking for special photographs and anything you feel would add to the nationals 50th celebration. If you have something to add get in touch with me and I will get it to them. The NSRA will make sure everything is returned to you after the event. The National is a fun event every year, so I am really looking forward to next year. The new 50th Anniversary car will be unveiled at the NSRA Nationals in August 2018.

This is good news for the Street Rod Nationals.

Louisville already has hosted the Street Rod Nationals for more than 23 years, but the convention plans to make that more than 28 years, the National Street Rod Association announced on Wednesday.

The association has committed to holding the event, which showcases thousands of well-maintained historic cars, in Louisville through 2025. It previously was contracted through 2020. “The decision to extend the contract through 2025 was an easy one to make.

The Street Rod Nationals have found a home in Louisville,” Jim Rowlett, NSRA marketing director, said in a news release. “The community is genuinely welcoming year after year, and the city's amenities are second to none.”

The summer event brings more than more than 30,000 participants to Louisville and features cars with a total estimated valued of nearly $400 million, according to the release. With an almost $17 million economic impact, it is one of Louisville's Top 5 conventions, according to the Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau.

This Month's report starts off with one of my favorite shows. The 2018 Scrapin the Coast with 2000 +/- customs, Lowriders, Lifted Jeeps/ Trucks ,Rat Rods, Hot Rods, Muscle cars, mini trucks, C-10's and bikes.

Besides the vehicles are vendors of all types along with audio contest, burnout contest, hydraulic contest all competing for some of the best awards. You need to see it for yourself.

Also this month we made the 4th Saturday Long Beach Harbor cruise.

About 30 cars at this one, but always fun.

I also made all the weekly Silver Slipper Casino weekly Thursday car / bike /jeep nights.

Next was the Jeff Davis Ave cruise in. They've had 90 plus cars at each one this year along with live music and great places to eat.

The last cruise in for this month's report was the 1st Saturday at Edgewater Mall with the Coast Cruizers. With a big chance of rain they still had 50 plus cars come visit. Included in the bunch was Joe who made the run over from Mobile driving a retired dirt car.

Like I always say get out and drive'em. Remember to watch for our friends out riding bikes also.

a friend sent me this excellent list for aging . . . and I have to agree it's good advice to follow. The guy who sent this hi-lighted #19.

1. It’s time to use the money you saved up. Use it and enjoy it. Don’t just keep it for those who may have no notion of the sacrifices you made to get it. Remember there is nothing more dangerous than a son or daughter-in-law with big ideas for your hard-earned capital. Warning: This is also a bad time for investments, even if it seems wonderful or fool-proof. They only bring problems and worries. This is a time for you to enjoy some peace and quiet.

2. Stop worrying about the financial situation of your children and grandchildren, and don’t feel bad spending your money on yourself. You’ve taken care of them for many years, and you’ve taught them what you could. You gave them an education, food, shelter and support. The responsibility is now theirs to earn their own money.

3. Keep a healthy life, without great physical effort. Do moderate exercise (like walking every day), eat well and get your sleep. It’s easy to become sick, and it gets harder to remain healthy. That is why you need to keep yourself in good shape and be aware of your medical and physical needs. Keep in touch with your doctor, do tests even when you’re feeling well. Stay informed.

4. Always buy the best, most beautiful items for your significant other. The key goal is to enjoy your money with your partner. One day one of you will miss the other, and the money will not provide any comfort then, enjoy it together 5. Don’t stress over the little things. Like paying a little extra on price quotes. You’ve already overcome so much in your life.You have good memories and bad ones, but the important thing is the present. Don’t let the past drag you down and don’t let the future frighten you. Feel good in the now.

Small issues will soon be forgotten.

6. Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, love your neighbor and remember: “A man is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection.”

7. Be proud, both inside and out. Don’t stop going to your hair salon or barber, do your nails, go to the dermatologist and the dentist, keep your perfumes and creams well stocked. When you are wellmaintained on the outside, it seeps in, making you feel proud and strong.

8. Don’t lose sight of fashion trends for your age, but keep your own sense of style. There’s nothing worse than an older person trying to wear the current fashion among youngsters. You’ve developed your own sense of what looks good on you – keep it and be proud of it. It’s part of who you are.

9. ALWAYS stay up-to-date. Read newspapers, watch the news. Go online and read what people are saying. Make sure you have an active email account and try to use some of those social networks.

You’ll be surprised what old friends you’ll meet. Keeping in touch with what is going on and with the people you know is important at any age.

10. Respect the younger generation and their opinions. They may not have the same ideals as you, but (Continued on page 17)

Make plans to stay late for a look at a really fine shop.

The location is 234 Amber Lane, Hwy. 63.

They came from Alabama, Pascagoula, Escatawpa, Vancleave, Wiggins, Lucedale and RAYMOND, MS for the Hardee's Cruise In. With 40 plus cars this month, the Hardee's Breakfast Cruise In has become quite an attraction. There were so many fine vehicles today that it made it really hard to chose which ones to feature.

The heat index was 105 but it didn't stop the crowd from looking and swapping car tales all the while sweating down.

Tim Zampiello from Agricola has been 4 years restoring this 1923 T Bucket. This T Bucket was recently featured on the front page of "Crazy Ray's Auto Pages" chosen from a field of over 4000 cars at Emerald Coast. "Crazy Ray's" is a magazine that is an online purchase only. Tim said it's all Ford and he's proud of it. Tim gives God credit for all he has and his ability to restore vehicles. A really neat car that we enjoyed at the breakfast.

This 1947 Chevy Fleetline made the breakfast all the way from Raymond, Ms (162 miles). The owner, John Bolden and his traveling partner, Mike Albright, were looking for something to do today and had seen the Breakfast advertised in the "MotorSports" and said why not. They left at 6 a.m.! John has had the 1947 Chevy for 11 years and he has done a total restoration but doesn't paint. John also has a '35 Ford Custom. His traveling buddy is a drag racer and he does his racing in a Chevy Vega Wagon. Both he and John belong to the Mississippi Goodtime Kruzers out of Jackson. In fact, John is the President of the Club. Welcome John and Mike. Please come again and bring some of your Club members with you next time.

Well Ronnie Legg has done it again. Another car in his corral completed. Ronnie purchased this 1931 Ford Sedan from Bubba Blanton of Mobile 11 years ago. This restoration has been a restoration between other restorations! He has a 350 Chevy in this Rat Rod. He wanted to put red interior but had to settle for this....

Hundreds and hundreds of classic cars and over 15,000 people in downtown Gulfport for View The Cruise. As I get the Hot Rod Show trailer setup that morning at 4 AM, the best spots will be filling up. If you have never experienced the Kickoff in downtown Gulfport, you are in for a treat. View The Cruise features great restaurants and bars, packed streets, the best DJ Show in the world, entertainment stages, Mega 50/50, a large amount of door prizes and some of the coolest cars on the planet. A couple years ago I heard about a college in Kansas that had an interesting auto restoration curriculum. The art of car restoration is fast becoming a lost art. Today body shops replace panels, instead of beating them back into shape with tools. What I did not realize when I heard about McPherson College is they offer a four year Bachelors degree in Auto Restoration, the only program in the USA to offer such a program. In a time where most high school shop classes are a mire memory, McPherson College in McPherson, KS is a shining star. McPherson College offers their students many advantages with their automotive program including internships with national museums and top restoration shops. Also, C.A.R.S. is a student led club that participates in numerous events during the year including car shows, unique behind the scenes trips to view private collections and museums.

McPherson College is a great place for a youngster to attend if they are looking for a career in auto restoration to become the next Chip Foose or Boyd Coddington. Kids that one day wish to open their own restoration shop, flip classic cars, work for an auction company or work for a major car collection, now have a career path to those goals. The college also offers summer courses for the hobbyists and

the professional.

I spoke with the Director of Auto Restoration Projects, Brian Martin with the college and was amazed at the level of instruction students receive in this program. To have a four year program curriculum for just auto restoration is beyond amazing. The skill sets McPherson students come out of college with will boggle your brain. The finest restoration shops in the country are eager to grab up students from this program. Brian was proud of the fact that 88% of 2018 students graduating the program have jobs before getting their diplomas. 96% of students have jobs in their field.

I was watching the June 9th episode of My Classic Car with Dennis Gage on the Velocity Network and I was once again reminded and more informed about the McPherson College program. Dennis Gage has been affiliated with the college and this program for over 20 years. (You can see the segment on YouTube by googling My Classic Car McPherson College on the YouTube search engine.) TV stars Jay Leno and Wayne Carini are on the advisory board and also support the college. So I started doing the research on this program that can do more for the classic car future than just about anything else I can think of.

Ed Rose and His 1940 Dodge It was 1940 and Dodge, now in the Chrysler Corporation lineup, was riding high. The automaker was enjoying a comfortable position near the top of the sales charts and bursting with pride. Dodge was now their passenger cars as “Luxury Liners”, with wider seats and finer upholstery than the cars in the line-up of their competition.

The 1940 “Luxury Liner” was offered in multiple body styles, including the 4 door sedan owned by Ed Rose. These were redesigned bodies for 1940, a departure from the Wind Stream styling that caused a loss in sales for Dodge from 1934 to 1937, with the Airflow. Dodge re-designed their line-up in 1939, 1940, 1941, and 1942. 1941 saw the introduction the Fluid Drive for Dodge cars, which eliminated stalling or bucking when the clutch was released too quickly. A fluid coupling was put in between the engine and the clutch, although the driver still had to shift the gears manually. Just after the 1942 models were released, Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor forced the shutdown of Dodge's passenger car assembly lines in favor of war production in February, 1942.

Yes, I realize I digressed. This is a 1940 Dodge and I should stick to that. I get carried away, sometimes. Forgive me.

The wheelbase was lengthened to 119.5 inches in 1940 and featured a bolder, wider grille, and a fastback silhouette. Dodge designers said the newly streamlined look was patterned after examples they found in nature, geese, dolphins and raindrops. Color choices included “Tropical Yellow”, “Shocking Blue”, and “Atlanta Orange”.

Available also in 1940 was the safety signal speedometer. This was a Dodge exclusive. The speedometer dial was wired to glow green from zero to 30 miles per hour, amber from 30 to 50 mph, and bright red above 50 mph. What do you think? Was this a safety or an entertainment feature? Perhaps it was both!

One true safety advance for 1940 was the introduction of sealed beam headlamps, a Dodge first. For years drivers had depended on six-volt bulbs to light their way at night. These were too weak for true safety. The new lamps used high energy bulbs, vacuum sealed in a reflective glass case. This gave 120 percent more illumination which was a huge improvement.

The 1940 Dodge had more comfort, durability, and was safer than previous years. It was priced at $905.00.

This is the winner of the Cubby's Choice award for August. Ed Rose has turned his 1940 Dodge, 4 door sedan into a street rod. He located it in a pole barn in Indiana and has improved the look and performance for modern roads. One can definitely say that his Dodge has been new and improved. It features a Chevy 366 Cubic Inch engine with 4 barrel carburetion. The transmission is a 700R and hits the pavement via a Chevy 336 rear end. It features power disc brakes in the front, and a Mustang II. It features custom paint in white over tan laid down by Brian Wamesley, custom pinstriping by Jerry Carr, and a one of a kind custom interior by J&F. Ed and his friends did all the terrific body work on this Dodge and take note of all the modifications to the interior, instrument panel, and trunk.

The frenched in head lamps and tail lamps add a custom highlight as well.

This Dodge is a work of art because of the attention to detail and well thought out execution of this build. This car is driven, too.

Ed, you and your friends have created a marvelous, one of a kind car the original Dodge Brothers would have been proud of. It is a delight to behold. Thank you for letting me share it with the other readers.

they are the future, and will take the world in their direction. Give advice, not criticism, and try to remind them that yesterday’s wisdom still applies today.

11. Never use the phrase: “In my time.” Your time is now. As long as you’re alive, you are part of this time. You may have been younger, but you are still you now, having fun and enjoying life.

12. Some people embrace their golden years, while others become bitter and surly. Life is too short to waste your days on the latter. Spend your time with positive, cheerful people, it’ll rub off on you and your days will seem that much better. Spending your time with bitter people will make you older and harder to be around.

13. Do not surrender to the temptation of living with your children or grandchildren (if you have a financial choice, that is). Sure, being surrounded by family sounds great, but we all need our privacy. They need theirs and you need yours. If you’ve lost your partner (our deepest condolences), then find a person to move in with you and help out. Even then, do so only if you feel you really need the help or do not want to live alone.

14. Don’t abandon your hobbies. If you don’t have any, make new ones.

You can travel, hike, cook, read, dance. You can adopt a cat or a dog, grow a garden, play cards, checkers, chess, dominoes, golf. You can paint, volunteer or just collect certain items. Find something you like and spend some real time having fun with it.

15. Even if you don’t feel like it, try to accept invitations. Baptisms, graduations, birthdays, weddings, conferences. Try to go. Get out of the house, meet people you haven’t seen in a while, experience something new (or something old). But don’t get upset when you’re not invited.

Some events are limited by resources, and not everyone can be hosted.

The important thing is to leave the house from time to time. Go to museums, go walk through a field. Get out there.

16. Be a conversationalist. Talk less and listen more. Some people go on and on about the past, not caring if their listeners are really interested.

That’s a great way of reducing their desire to speak with you. Listen first and answer questions, but don’t go off into long stories unless asked to.

Speak in courteous tones and try not to complain or criticize too much unless you really need to. Try to accept situations as they are. Everyone is going through the same things, and people have a low tolerance for hearing complaints. Always find some good things to say as well.

17. Pain and discomfort go hand in hand with getting older. Try not to dwell on them but accept them as a part of the cycle of life we’re all going through. Try to minimize them in your mind. They are not who you are, they are something that life added to you. If they become your entire focus, you lose sight of the person you used to be.

18. If you’ve been offended by someone – forgive them. If you’ve offended someone - apologize. Don’t drag around resentment with you. It only serves to make you sad and bitter. It doesn’t matter who was right.

Someone once said: “Holding a grudge is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Don’t take that poison. Forgive, forget and move on with your life.

19. If you have a strong belief, savor it. But don’t waste your time trying to convince others. They will make their own choices no matter what you tell them, and it will only bring you frustration. Live your faith and set an example. Live true to your beliefs and let that memory sway them.

20. Laugh. Laugh A LOT. Laugh at everything. Remember, you are one of the lucky ones. You managed to have a life, a long one. Many never get to this age, never get to experience a full life. But you did. So what’s not to laugh about? Find the humor in your situation.

21. Take no notice of what others say about you and even less notice of what they might be thinking. They’ll do it anyway, and you should have pride in yourself and what you’ve achieved. Let them talk and don’t worry. They have no idea about your history, your memories and the life you’ve lived so far. There’s still much to be written, so get busy writing and don’t waste time thinking about what others might think. Now is the time to be at rest, at peace and as happy as you can be!

John Lunstrum DIXIE TV : BILOXI, MS Well it’s that time of year again and once again Scrapin’ The Coast didn’t disappoint as usual. This is the 16th annual venue of the event and was expected to bring in well over 2.5 million dollars to our beautiful Gulf Coast. The preparations for this massive event start well before the expected masses arrive. Highway 90’s 4-lane road was turned into a 2-lane road with a emergency vehicle access in the center for any and all occasions.

Friday kicked it off as vehicles started registration process and all hotel’s started to turn on the “NO VACANCY” lights early. The coastal area on Hwy 90 was lining up by sundown with nothing but kustom kulture and spectators walking around.

There were surprisingly a lot of lifted trucks verses lowered vehicles at this years Scrapin 2018. Around 6pm the Scrapers dragged up and down the coast in a single file line showcasing their personal kustom choices.

As the party continued on the coast another was brewing at Gulfport Dragway for the Diesel Tug. Here was a completely different atmosphere and genre of Scrapin.

The tug’s is where one vehicle straps itself to another vehicle or vehicles and they play a rumbling game of tug-o-war. This show was one for the books and participants of all ages were present.

On day 2 of Scrapin the gates opened at 8am and the lines were never ending. Here kids even rode tricked out power wheels and electric rides with kustom flare.

The show wasn’t only for kustom vehicles but also had it’s share of American muscle and classic pieces of automotive history.

With an expected 2300 car plus registered the crowds had plenty of sights to take in.

Meanwhile, across town back at Gulfport Dragway, Race Wars was starting. Race wars was all about “Run what you Brung”. No classes, no rules, just plain old street racing in a controlled safe environment. The famous burn-out competition was a blast. The winner, Eric Malbrough brought a spare tire because he knew he was there to win.

Crowds ducked behind anything they could as sparks started flying from his rear wheel well and the passenger in the truck was shooting roman candles in the air for the win.

By Sunday morning the Scraping crowd started to tire out and the award ceremony took place at the main stage on the front green of the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. With that being said, We hope to see a great turn out next year at this kustom kulture mainstream venue that excites all ages from all regions on our beautiful Gulf Coast.

By: “Dixie” Spurlock July 14, 2018 Eight o’clock in the morning and the Texas sun was already beating down, but it did not stop people of all ages from coming out to enjoy Texoma Cars & Coffee in downtown Denison. I overestimated how long the previous night’s cool front would last and quickly discovered no amount of rolling up my capri-length jeans was going to make up for having worn them in the first place.

But as I crawled along the pavement toward air-conditioned sanctuary, all the sweat was worth it to see the beautiful cars which lined Main Street.

Once refreshed, I was able to head back out to enjoy the cars and talk to some of the people who had come down to enjoy the show. The first person I ran into in my revived state was Kyle Robinson, owner of Robinson Tinting in Denison, Texas. When I bumped into Kyle, he was speaking with Mark Fink of Main Street Motors (who appeared in the June, 2018, issue) about Kyle’s work tinting the unusually curved rear window of a Corvette.

Mark Fink: The defroster grid actually leaves an air-gap in there.

Yeah, but this is actually a separate piece from what’s here and here (Kyle pointed to indicate where the two pieces of tint overlapped so there was no gap in the tint). So, I overlap them, then I cut them… Corvettes are the exception…There are shops that won’t take them, or they’ll take them and they’ll charge you $350 for the back glass only. I just charge them $100.

Mark Fink: And then to remove that stuff, how hard is it to remove it?

Usually what you do is get a black trash bag, like Mean Green, and water and set it on the back. You let the sun bake it and it kind of eats away at the tint and the glue and then you can pull everything off…because you really can’t scrape it because you’ll ruin the defrosters. So, with something like this (the driver’s side window glass) you can just take a blade to it. Getting it off really any other car, the process is the same and you have to focus on buying good parts, focusing on the aesthetic of the window and really, it’s just all kind of the same thing on every car, you spend the money on good tint and just, you know….do a good job.

CE Spurlock: You were talking about the Corvette and how about a lot of tinters will not take this particular type of car. Why is that?

A lot of it has to do with the actual radius, or contour, curvature, whatever you call it, of the back glass itself. It’s a longer process. A lot of people can’t get the bubbles out of the side but it’s something that, if you’ll take the time to do it, and have the experience, you can get in and knock it out.

CE Spurlock: What other classic cars have you worked on?

Let’s see, I’ve done a few of the ones for Jay. I’ve done one of his Corvettes. So far in here, that’s really all I’ve done (that’s here). Overall, I’ve worked on older Kyle Robinson of Robinson’s Tinting Chevelle’s, I work on a lot of older Chevy’s, some of the square bodies, really a lot of 70s models trucks in this market.

CE Spurlock: What’s your favorite to work on?

My favorite to work on? That ‘s a good question. My favorite ones to work on are probably newer ones with sort of like bigger, brighter paint jobs because once you put the tint on it, it really completes the aesthetic of the entire vehicle. So, it’s kind of fun to see that come out. For one with bigger windows, all the way around, so it feels like you are actually sitting in a fish bowl, you get to actually cover the windows and it helps the customer out a lot, too.

CE Spurlock: What got you into auto tinting specifically?

Well, my dad actually started his business in Lone Grove, Oklahoma, about 21-years ago. So naturally, I just grew up doing it as a….in a family business, during summers, or you know, after school, and then over time I just…instead of treating it like a quick job it became a trade, something that I took serious, and so I was fortunate enough to grow up in it.

CE Spurlock: Will you be going to other car shows and talking with other people about

available tintings for classic cars and vintage cars?

Yeah, I’ve heard of a few of them coming up this year, so I’m going to constantly be checking the market, seeing what shows are coming into town or maybe within, you know, this radius, and let them know what I’ve got going on.

CE Spurlock: What about the classic trailers? Airstream revivals, Shasta’s, Canned Hams?

Everything. If it has a window I can tint it. I have 15-years experience. I spend money on material. I really focus on the aesthetic and, most importantly, I give a lifetime guarantee. So, if anything ever messes up, if it’s in a week or if it’s in five years from now, I’ll take care of it. So, if you do business with me, then you have business with me for the life of your car. When I could not take the heat anymore, I retreated back inside where I ran into Angelina Howell who, with her partner Josh Moody, is one of the owners of Top End Autocare, and who was nice enough to spend a few minutes chatting with me.

“Our service kind of helps with people who happen to have cars that they don’t want scratched or they don’t want on the road. So that kind of helps them out, helps our seniors, because they don’t need to go and sit inside a waiting room waiting on their cars to get done. Or, maybe you’ve just got a car inside the car and just want it cleaned up every once in a while, that’s where we come in and help.”

“I work right in their driveways. As long as I have access to electric and water, I’m perfectly capable of taking care of anything they’ve got. We try to work with environmentally friendly chemicals and our waxes are a ceramic coat, so they coat the vehicle for 3-months, they help repel damage from bugs and oxidation. People who have sprinkler systems typically, you know the car gets hit. That leaves water spots. Our wax actually helps prevent damage from water spots.”

As the conversation progressed, we discussed being women working in the auto industry.

“You get a lot of looks, you really do, especially if you say you are going to clean somebody’s car, ‘cause they’ll look at you like, ‘What do you know about it?’ and you find it a little bit hard sometimes because people tend to, maybe second-guess you, until you prove yourself.”

“So, women in the car industry…I would say go for it. A year and half ago I started detailing. Fell in love with it. If you would have told me ten years ago that I would have been doing this, I would have looked at you like, ‘No way!’ But every car is a new experience and every owner is a new story. I love being around the people.“ “I’m teaching my daughters. They are involved in this business. They help clean the cars. So, they are learning responsibility, they are learning public service, and they are learning professionalism. I think that’s something that may be missing a lot in the generation that we have right now. So, when we go out and we talk to people, I try to make sure that we put the best foot forward and I think as women we need to set the bar high for our young ladies that are coming up, that you need to respect yourself and you need to respect your business. It takes hard work. It doesn’t happen overnight and there’s going to be a lot of valleys before you reach the top of those hills. “ As for what the future holds for Angelina, she and Josh are, “trying to get a drag strip racer running.”

“It’s a 1996 Mustang Mystic and we’re trying to work out getting it on the road, which is kind of fun because when you come to classic events like this, ‘cause you find out about the new stuff. What I want to do when I come here is find out how to keep these cars in the best condition possible and help the owners keep them in the best conditional possible for generations to come because classic cars are like the best cars that were ever built.”

Grease It's Still the Word

By Candy Cocktail As a Grease fan since as far back as I can possibly remember, I have an extensive knowledge about various aspects of the film and its stars, but I love learning interesting new tidbits of information. Saying I loved the celebrated film as a child would be an understatement; I was actually obsessed with the film. I named every pet I had growing up Sandy and would even change into my makeshift costumes to go along with each scene of the film as I danced and sang around the living room to it.

While other kids were watching Saturday morning cartoons, I got up and watched my VHS copy of Grease, sometimes as much as three times in one morning! Almost everyone knows all the words to the famous songs well enough to sing at karaoke. Some of you could win a round of Grease trivia just like me, and yet there are even more surprising facts that you may not know about Danny, Sandy, Rizzo and Kenickie.

This past June marked the 40th anniversary of one of the most iconic films of all time, Grease.

The beloved film which pays homage to teens in 1950s America, was celebrated on TV, Turner Classic Movies presented limited screenings of the classic film on the big screen and with special promotions. Cosmetics companies capitalized on the famous anniversary in which beauty brand Sola Look released a Pink Ladies eyeshadow palette. Even OPI nail polish released a special collection of colors inspired by our pals at Rydell High.

The first thing you never knew about the classic movie is that the film was originally going to be entirely a cartoon. They ended up making the movie with real actors, but they left the animation in the beginning of the film.

Originally released on June 16, 1978, Grease is based on the 1972 Broadway musical of the same name that ran for 3,388 shows. The original was much more profane: Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey wrote the original 1971 stage production of Grease using an urban Chicago high school as inspiration and they failed to leave out any profanity or raunchy teenage antics. The musical got its name for the nostalgic 1950s affinity for greasy hair, greasy engines and greasy fast food.

The original stage play of Grease was actually full of sexual

innuendo. The censors forced the filmmakers to take out much of the more racy references. A number of things originally planned for the film adaption of the stage musical would have made it even more racy and controversial.

Rizzo's “hickeys from Kenickie� were not makeup. It is said that the actor insisted on planting real ones on brunette bad girl Stockard Channing.

Perhaps the most controversial casting was the role of Coach Calhoun, which was originally given to Harry Reems, the star of the infamous pornographic film Deep Throat. After protests, Sid Caesar was cast in the role instead.

As claimed by Emgn.com, Sandy and Danny's drive in scene (where he gives her his ring) was used as the screen test for the pair of actors. Even though Olivia Newton-John was already cast in the role of Sandy, she asked the director for a screen test. Possibly because she was actually 10 years older than co-star John Travolta.

Elvis Presley was offered the role of the guardian angel in the musical number “Beauty School Dropout” but he declined it. The role eventually went to Frankie Avalon, but the cast did not want to leave him out, so during the girls' sleepover scene there is a subtle nod to him on Frenchy's bedroom poster. Ironically, the day the sleepover scene filmed, August 16, 1977, was the same day the king of rock n' roll passed away.

Another surprising fact is that the title is never mentioned, not even once. However the term “greased lightning” with a -d is used.

In the stage version, Kenickie sang the hot rod anthem in the tricked out garage scene, but Travolta wanted the number for himself in the movie version.

As stated on the Good Housekeeping website, Paramount originally wanted Happy Days star Henry Winkler as their leading man, but the actor denied the offer as he was worried about being typecast. Lucille Ball's daughter Lucie Arnaz was the first choice for Rizzo, but her mother refused to let her audition for the role.

Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher and Lorna Luft (Judy Garland's daughter and Liza Minnelli's half sister who later played my favorite character of Grease 2, Paulette) were some of the actresses considered for the role of Sandy, but according to several sites, the

front runner was Marie Osmond. She was well suited for the role, but being raised Mormon, she objected to Sandy's bad girl transformation, thus she declined.

Sandy was not originally Australian. Big time producer Allan Carr picked country-singer Olivia Newton-John for the part of Sandy after sitting across from her at a dinner party. The Melbourne native could not do an American accent, so they rewrote the part and changed Sandy's last name from "Dumbrowski" to "Olsson.”

Jeff Conaway played the role of Danny Zuko on Broadway (supposedly along with Richard Gere and Patrick Swayze) but instead played the sidekick role of Kenickie in the film. Actress Jamie Donnelly played the role of Jan in both the Broadway musical and film adaption.

Perhaps most shocking is that the iconic film was originally hated by critics! Pursuant to goodhousekeeping.com, Danny Zuko's blue windbreaker in the beach scene beginning of the movie was a nod to the original handsome bad boy, James Dean's character in Rebel Without a Cause.

The “hand jive” should have been called the “heat jive” because of the excruciating heat in the windowless gym where the scene filmed. Temperatures topped 100 degrees during the two weeks the school dance scene filmed, in which extras came down with heatrelated illnesses. Even actor Michael Tucci, who played T-Bird Sonny LaTierri, fainted and had to be taken to the emergency room.

John Travolta's sister Ellen has a bit part in the film as well. When she came to visit him on set one day, she remarked about how fun it would be to be part of the film. Travolta arranged for her to be one of the Frosty Palace diner waitresses watching the dance on TV. You can spot her in the film when she points out the stars, saying, “Oh look, there's Danny and Sandy.”

The T-Birds and Pink Ladies still rule the school when it comes to movie musicals. These interesting facts about the stars and filming of the cult classic that made Grease the word definitely make me hold out hope for a third film in the franchise. Isn't it the most, to say the least?

Originally grossing $400 million, Grease was the highest grossing movie musical of all time until Mamma Mia! stole the long held title in 2008. It only cost $6 million to make the California-filmed movie.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, “Hopelessly Devoted to You” almost never made it into the film.

Buzzfeed.com described how the love song was written and added after the movie wrapped because producers thought Olivia NewtonJohn needed a big ballad to showcase her talent.

The so called “Rydell High” was named for Bobby Rydell, the 60s heartthrob singer of the hit “Swingin' School” as reported by seventeen.com.

In Mexico and Venezuela, Grease was released under the title Vaselina.

Broadway.com listed several automatic, systematic, hydromatic facts about the coolest high school on film. One of which was that the producers were actually planning on getting a product placement deal with Coke, but it fell through, leaving them to blur out or digitally remove several shots of Coca-Cola products and signs in the scenes at the Frosty Palace diner.

The website additionally mentioned that the writers of Grease were inspired to write the song “Beauty School Dropout” after seeing a news story about a teenage murderer who had recently dropped out of beauty school.

During filming, the stars, Olivia and John, as well as the rest of the cast, were much too old to be in high school. Olivia NewtonJohn had been out of high school for over a decade when she took the role of Sandy. Olivia was 29 and Stockard Channing, AKA Rizzo, was the oldest of the Pink Ladies at 33.

More Grease please! Carr proposed a sequel called Summer School, that focused on Kenickie and Rizzo's wedding. Instead, Grease 2 flipped the plot, taking place two years after the original.

Set in the 1961-1962 school year at Rydell High School with an almost entirely new cast, it was led by then relatively unknown stars Maxwell Caulfield as Sandy's handsome cousin and Michelle Pfeiffer as the leader of the Pink Ladies.

The June 1982 release had twice the budget of the original, but flopped, earning only $15 million at the box office. Plans for a Grease franchise, including three more movies and a TV series, were subsequently put on hold. As a loyal fan of the original, I think the sequel is almost just as enjoyable, with an equally catchy soundtrack highlighted by the songs “Cool Rider” and “Score Tonight.”

A people.com article from May of 2003 disclosed that a third Grease film starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta was in the works. The film, tentatively called Son of Grease and produced by Didi Cohn who portrayed Frenchy in Grease 1 and 2, was said to revolve around Sandy and Danny's children, set to 70s disco. However, in a later 2006 interview Cohn said the scripts were not good enough for another film and since then there has not been any news of Grease 3.

It was rumored that during filming, Jeff Conaway, who played Kenickie, had a huge crush on Olivia Newton-John.

After filming, he went on to marry Olivia's elder sister, Rona Newton -John.

The couple was married from 1980-1985.

By: Donna “Sugar Bug” White Remember as a kid, you waited on the side of main street, anxious for the Christmas parade to come along? Once you heard the drums of the marching bands in the distance, you knew it was close. As your heart started beating faster, you couldn't wait until they were in sight. You knew at the end of it you'd see Santa.

That's exactly how I feel standing on the track, before first pass, and I hear the engines start up.....I know they're coming. Since I've gotten older, the beat of the drums are now the sound of the engines and my Santa has become all my racers, but inside I'm still that 5 year old standing on the side of the track, heart pounding, wanting the parade to begin.

She kisses him on the helmet and closes the door. As she walks out onto the track, she looks up into the crowd and smiles.

However, behind the sunglasses is a hint of worry for her driver in her eyes. Even as the smoke from the tires dulls her view of the car, she can still see his helmet through the window. This person is much more than a driver: he is a husband, boyfriend, brother, or a friend. No matter what the relation is, he is at that moment her only priority. She knows that she needs to be his eyes, ears, and he is completely dependent on her to help him. She is his back-up-girl (BUG).

As she backs him up into the groove, she begins a walk that has been done for decades. She is not only carrying the weight of the responsibilities, she's also carrying the weight of the tradition itself.

Once she backs him into the groove, she pulls him up into the beams. This is the moment that her work may seem done, but to her it begins the scariest few seconds of the day. She walks away from the car, and stands back to watch him make the pass. When he crosses the finish line and makes his way safely to the return road, she can breathe and say a quiet prayer.

Each BUG has her own style, personality, and ways of backing a car up. Her driver and her are a team, along with the rest of their team members. If you watch carefully, you will see that most have a way of communicating personally with the driver before she walks off…whether it be a tap on the window, tap on the hood, a smile, or some other form of sending him off with good wishes. The backup

itself may be technical, but that split-second personal signal just between them can mean everything to both of them.

Sometimes, BUGs are underestimated.

Unless you do it yourself, it's hard to describe the concentration required amongst the noise, smoke, eyes of the crowd, and also trying to focus against the racing thoughts inside their own minds..But, no matter what their style or personality is, they are all very strong, beautiful, and the Queens of our time.

When I first started being around other BUGs, it was sometimes hard to see who was there for the right reason. If I was unsure, I would ask a simple question: "How do you keep your feet from sticking to the track?" Of course I knew how, but they didn't know that I knew. I had ONE to answer me. Just one. I knew that I did not want to be like the rest that I had asked and was ignored.....I wanted to be like that one who took a moment to tell me her way.

She had no clue I already knew, and I never told her. And to this day, I have held true to being like that one.

It is important to know that no matter if you wear boots, heels, or driving shoes, someone needs to fill those one day. It's not all about the makeup, hair, clothes, what's under the hood, ET's, etc.

It's about what you will leave to carry on, and who it is that will fill those shoes.

A year ago, I shared a picture taken of me at a track and a little girl was sitting in the stands with a bicycle watching me (I've shared it again here as a reminder).

Well, her name is Sabrina, and I ran into her again a few weeks ago. Guess what she told me she wanted to do. That's riiiiight!

Cheers to Rodney Potter's best friend, Becky, for taking the first step this past weekend in NC. I wish I had pics of all of you, but these two folks is all I have.

Take the time out to show someone what you do. Be kind and gentle, and have encouraging words. I sincerely hope that some day, when I'm too old and the track is too sticky to push my walker on it, I am lucky enough to sit in the stands and watch them go. Make sure you have someone that you want to sit in the stands and watch some day.....that will be your greatest accomplishment.

So you see....you gave me so much more than "Skullz".....seeing her reaction to your words was more than I could ever imagine. All I will say is......THANK YOU for my "wings" on him. He has a special place on my nightstand so every morning when I wake up I'm reminded to do the right thing that day.

Dirt Track Revival … Chavus Holland Hello again! Last month I introduced myself, my wife and our three kids. Each month throughout my journal, I'll be introducing new people that have had an influence in my life as well as Chase's life and racing career. One of these people is my Dad, (Paw Paw) George Holland. He doesn't miss a racing event that Chase is competing in! (or any other event or function for my other children either! He and my mom, Cindie, are very involved in our kid's lives.) So, when I'm writing, and I use the term “we” it practically always includes my dad.

When I signed off last month, we had just ended the 2017 racing season after only competing in 4 racing events with our open wheel modified. During the winter months, also known as the “off season”, we stripped the car down and inspected everything. We pulled the engine and transmission out, then disassembled most of the chassis and suspension components to clean and inspect everything before reassembling the entire car. This was a major process, but it was much needed for us to become more familiar with this racing machine and it's many moving parts! We sent the engine off to our engine builder, Ronald Parker, to get it freshened up. I rebuilt the transmission myself.

That was my first ever transmission rebuild, it was neat to see how it all works! We got our engine back home in just a few weeks and immediately went to work putting everything back together.

We were race ready when the 2018 racing season arrived. Chase seemed to pick up right where we had left off. On opening night, March 2, 2018, a bump on the track by another competitor, in our heat race, caused our radiator bracket to break loose. Our fan chewed up the radiator, ending our night early! The sprint cars were racing that night as well. None other than “SMOKE” himself, Mr. Tony Stewart, was in the house at Hattiesburg Speedway! YES, you read that correctly...This was my 2nd time to see Tony Stewart, try his luck at Hattiesburg Speedway!

As he was attempting to pass for 2nd position on the last lap, he ran into turn 3 a little too hot! He quickly had to shut it down to stay off his competitor and when he picked the throttle back up his car reared up on a wheelie. He flipped backwards! Quite exciting for the fans…not so cool for Smoke! One of our friends, Robert Necaise, talked to the disgruntled Tony Stewart after the races and actually bought his crumpled up wing from him. $200 was the price, and he even talked Tony into signing this awesome souvenir! I hauled the wing home, strapped to the top of our tire rack for Robert, because he had no way of getting this thing home without a trailer. This “favor for a friend”, also started a rumor that I had bought the wing from Tony myself for $5000!

I later found the source of that rumor, after getting numerous calls and texts from friends asking if it was true. LOL…You can't believe everything you hear these days people!

So I'm going to back up for just a minute…When we were searching for a modified to purchase for Chase, I had numerous conversations with multiple people who each had years of racing experience under their belts. These people helped steer us in the right direction and continue to support us today. I'm probably going to forget some, but my point here is, racers are some of the finest people on the planet! They will help you any way possible. So, with us taking bits and pieces of advice from old school racers such as Donald Parker, Danny Jones, Kent Wood, George Gilbert, Jeremy Sexton, Ronald Parker, Robert Casada, The Idom's, Bubba Trotter, Joey Pilgrim, Jamie Luzenberg, Toby Hodge, Wallace Allen and others, it has really put us on the fast track to getting this

monster up to speed! The relationships with these guys, have also led to new relationships… And that is where I'm headed with this story today.

You see, up until this point, I hadn't really reached out to anyone for set -up help. I was trying to let Chase get settled in without the added pressure of someone in the pit schooling him, just yet. However, I could see the time was coming, as he was getting more comfortable! As Chase continued to progress each weekend, I kept uploading the videos to Facebook of his races. One morning I received a call from George Gilbert, who was calling to pass on the phone number of his friend, Noah Daspit.

Noah is a current modified championship caliber driver! He is well known for his knowledge of making these modified racecars fly! Particularly the SHAW brand Chassis, (which is what we own) as he spent many years behind the wheel of one of these beasts himself! This was very exciting for us. We had never met Noah personally, but we knew of him. He has a reputation as a serious dirt track wheelman and a chassis set-up expert!

George said Noah had seen our video and it had looked to him as if our car had a broken shock. (I had no idea!) George said that Noah wanted me to give him a call, so I did. We drove over to Noah's shop and met him that week and dropped off our shocks for him to look over. When we picked them up, a few days later, Noah explained what he had found, and

what he had changed, and how he thought it would affect the handle of our car. He also questioned me on the current set-up on our car. After showing him our set-up sheets, along with some pictures of our rear suspension, he went on spilling some serious info! It appeared we had been out in left field with our old set-up! Noah was clearly on another level than us. I couldn't even process everything, but I didn't want him to think I was a dummy either, so I asked if I could start writing this stuff down as he was spewing valuable information! He wrote it down for us! Then he offered us a set-up manual for our SHAW Chassis, complete with some of his old scale numbers. We tried to act cool but appreciative. However, when we got in the truck Chase and I were extremely pumped! We were so excited to have the help of Noah Daspit, a local dirt track legend! We couldn't wait to get home and start wrenching on our car! Over the next couple days, I was in contact with Noah several more times as we made the changes to our set-up and prepared to go try it out!

Our car was a ROCKET!!! From this point on, our car was totally drivable in all track conditions. Over the next few races Chase really began to show as a contender for the top spots each week, even with the extremely large car counts we were seeing each weekend! However, we did have several DNFs because of unavoidable circumstances, but we kept digging! If I'm being honest, there was a point where I questioned my sanity. It seemed like the unavoidable crashes each week, the weekly maintenance expenses, and the cost of weekly entry fees, would ultimately put an end to our racing! It was looking like a short career for Chase! Every week we were spending $500-$800 (sometimes more) on racing! We honestly couldn't make it without our sponsors! (we are always looking for more sponsors!) Noah has been a great help as well, not only offering his knowledge and resources, but he also came and wrenched on our car at the track for us a couple of times this season! The first night he helped us, while the Super Late Models were at Hattiesburg Speedway in mid-May, Noah came to the pits after Chase had just finished 2nd in his heat race.

Noah talked to Chase for a few minutes before going to work on our car, armed with just a tape measure and some wrenches. He moved trailing arms, shortened trailing arms, lengthened trailing arms, and twisted the mess out of our weight jacks all while only using measurements out of his head! I'm trying to tell ya'll he's just that good! After a good 30 minutes or so of turning wrenches on our car, Noah went to the bleachers to watch the Late Model Feature (and to get a look at the latest track conditions) while we finished preparing the car for our feature event. Everything Noah had done was meant to tighten up the racecar for the feature event. When Noah came back just minutes before Chase needed to strap in and line up, he had

a look on his face…when I asked Noah how the track was, he calmly said, “it rubbered up on us”. So, basically everything we had done to tighten the racecar up for the presumed dry slick track, was now needing to be reversed! “No time for that”, I said to Noah! “Watch this” I said, as I called Chase over to us as he was stepping into his fire suit! I reached out and grabbed Chase by his shoulder, I said “Son, Mr. Noah has put you on a magic setup! The car is ready to go to the front, you just have to take it there!”

“Yes sir” Chase replied! Noah looked even more nervous as I turned to him and asked if there was anything he wanted to tell Chase?

“Keep it in the black, you'll see the black groove around the racetrack, just try to keep it in the black” Noah said. “Yes sir!” Chase replied.

If I would've told Chase that we were concerned before the race, he would've drove the car like there was a problem. Instead, he went out and slap drove the wheels off that rig! He raced wheel to wheel and door to door without touching anybody the whole race! He drove the car like a pro. We ended up 4th at the checkered after battling with the top 5 for positions the entire race! He earned some fans that night! Noah has since become a good friend to us and a valuable member to our team! I'm not sure why he chose to help us, but we're sure glad he did! I had numerous people compliment Chase on this exciting run. I told Chase at the trailer after the races what we had done. I asked if he was mad at me. He laughed and said, “no I'm not mad… but when I first mashed the gas out there I was thinking, dang, Mr. Noah must like his cars really tight!!!”

Live to ride / ride to Eat. By: Mike Longo Just when you think that you have seen about everything that the coast has to offer you run across a jewel and a surprise like Ramsey Springs.

Today I woke up feeling a slight breeze out of the North threw my leg over my scooter and headed North on highway 15.

I heard through the grape Vine of a new business at Ramsey Springs that served the most awesome roast beef pressed po boys since Rosetti's on the Biloxi Point.

What a surprise this little general store was a pleasant stop on my trip. My roast beef po-boy was the best I've tasted in a long time and the atmosphere and owner and staff of this little store are friendly Where's great service and personal attention. If you're in this part of the coast be sure to stop in and also take in the history of Ramsey Spring.

History has it that people from all over the country would travel to Ramsey Springs to bathe in the therapeutic pools that are a natural geological formation of this area

King Hires Donkey The king wanted to go fishing, and he asked the royal weather forecaster the forecast for the next few hours. The palace meteorologist assured him that there was no chance of rain.

So the king and the queen went fishing. On the way he met a man with a fishing pole riding on a donkey, and he asked the man if the fish were biting.

The fisherman said, "Your Majesty, you should return to the palace! In just a short time I expect a huge rain storm."

The king replied: "I hold the palace meteorologist in high regard. He is an educated and experienced professional. Besides, I pay him very high wages. He gave me a very different forecast. I trust him."

So the king continued on his way.

However, in a short time a torrential rain fell from the sky. The King and Queen were totally soaked.

Furious, the king returned to the palace and gave the order to fire the meteorologist.

Then he summoned the fisherman and offered him the prestigious position of royal forecaster.

The fisherman said, "Your Majesty, I do not know anything about forecasting. I obtain my information from my donkey. If I see my donkey's ears drooping, it means with certainty that it will rain."

So the king hired the donkey.

And thus began the practice of hiring dumb asses to work in influential positions of government.

The practice is unbroken to this date.
