God will not allow things to happen that won’t somehow move you toward your destiny. He can see things that we can’t see. He knows the end from the beginning. There are times it looks like God is taking us the wrong way. We were about to pay our car off and the flood hits, we have to start all over. Somebody spreads rumors and keeps you from a promotion. You thought you met the person of your dreams, but they had a change of heart and it didn’t work out. We think, “God, where were You? Why didn’t You stop this from happening? God, You could have stopped the flood. You could have kept me from that rejection. You could have caused them to stay.” What we can’t see is the disappointments, the betrayals, the bad breaks are all a part of God’s plan. We don’t like it, it’s uncomfortable, but without them, we wouldn’t reach our destiny.. … Joel Osteen

Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo As I start out our twenty-fourth year publishing MotorSports Magazine, I would like to say thank you the people who contribute their time and effort to keep this newsletter/magazine going. Thank you to the writers of monthly columns who entertain the readers with a different article each month. Thank you to our readers who send in their personal comments and stories and photographers that give us a glimpses into the shows we missed or couldn't attend. Also a special thank you to the folks who take time out of their busy life to distribute the magazine in their areas. Thank you to the many subscribers from the twentysix states we mail each month and thank you to our advertisers who help defer the cost of a very large monthly printing bill. (Readers, you could help us out by telling the advertisers you saw their ad in MotorSports Magazine) I never expected to have a monthly magazine in my life (neither would any of my English teachers) but that’s one of the surprises in life. You just never know where your adventure will take you if you aren’t willing to give it a try. Well here we are in 2019. This the last year we will ever use the word “teen” when someone asks the “what year” question.., in twelve months it will be 2020. I know that’s a whole year away, but at the same time I think just how fast this past year went by me. The list of things I was going to get done is getting longer each year with leftover plans from previous years.

OK, TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY, but what the heck do I do with all those candles? Call the paramedics and fire department? lol Memories of days, friends and relatives now long gone rush into my mind. My brother and I grew up in a loving 'almost' Ozzie & Harriet-style family. Our dad dragged on the streets of Phoenix in the late 40s and raced a flathead powered Model A jalopy (#49) in the early-early 50s. He took us to the first NHRA Nationals in 1955 (Perryville, AZ). I was 8 when he pulled the family Hudson to the starting line at the Nats, placed me on his lap, signaled to the flagman that we were ready and told me, "Steer!" as he hit the throttle. Eight years old and I got to drive through the quarter mile at the first NHRA Nationals! In the high school years, our long concrete driveway and the street in front of our house were filled with Model A's, '55 Chevies, etc that we and our friends owned. Our ever-smiling dad was a car guy and was always there to help our fellow teenagers with their car problems. In '64, Ken and I were sitting on stacks of slicks as we rode to Beeline Dragway in the back of a red '64 Fleetside Chevy pickup towing a red '31 Model A F/G coupe owned by a high school friend now passed, Harry Lopez. That was the start of my GASSER addiction. Thankfully, I've never been able to get over it. I've yet to find a plug-in air freshener that combines the scent of burnout smoking tires with nitro fumes, but I'm still looking. LOL Thanks to all of you for being in my life.

A man went to Church and is phone rang by accident during prayers. The Pastor scolded him. The worshippers admonished him after prayers for interrupting the silence. His wife kept on lecturing him on his carelessness all the way home. You could see the shame, embarrassment and humiliation on his face. He never stepped foot in the church again. That evening, he went to a bar. He was still nervous and trembling. He spilled his drink on the table by accident. The waiter apologized and gave him a napkin to clean himself. The janitor mopped the floor. The female manager offered him a complimentary drink. She also gave him a huge hug and a kiss while saying, “Don’t worry man. Who doesn’t make mistakes?” He has never stopped going to that bar since then. Lesson: You can make a difference by how you treat people, especially when they make mistakes.

A mother-in-law stopped by unexpectedly the recently married couple's house. She knocks on the door, then immediately walks in. She is shocked to see her daughter-in-law lying on the couch, totally naked. "What are you doing?" she asked. "I'm waiting for Jeff to come home from work," the daughter-in-law answered. "But you're naked!" the mother-in-law exclaimed. "This is my love dress," the daughter-in-law explained. "Love dress? But you're naked!" "Jeff loves me to wear this dress! It makes him happy and it makes me happy." The mother-in-law on the way home thought about the love dress. When she got home she got undressed, showered, put on her best perfume and expectantly waited for her husband, lying provocatively on the couch. Finally her husband came home. He walked in and saw her naked on the couch. "What are you doing?" he asked. "This is my love dress," she replied. "Needs ironing," he says" "What's for dinner?"

Jimbo, Starting in 1948, my family fed, clothed, and housed me. Took me to church. Sent me to school. Taught me to work. They were great. In 1970 I married my wonderful wife. We had 4 children, and helped 2 from extended family. 6 parenting opportunities. I pushed for "being all they could be". Sent kids to local schools, thru middle schools, then to private boarding high schools far away, and to Universities, for as long as possible. My wife taught them by example and caring. 2 got post-grad degrees, 1 got engineering degree, 1 had college, no degree. 3 are married. 1 has children. My grade as parent might be C. I should have been more involved and not counted on higher education. I should have named the kids Carol, Georg, Flo, Al, Missi, Lou, and Tex. I should have told them: "Reside in the states that begin with those names and invite me to visit during winter." I should have given them "Mercy Me" advice: "Stop and smell the roses while the roses are in bloom. Promise me you'll honestly have fun in what you do." Thanks for the magazines. Good luck. Best wishes. Happy 2019. Take Care. mrlonranger@ Jimbo, Mike was going to be married to Jane, so his father sat him down for a little chat. He said, 'Mike, let me tell you something. On my wedding night in our honeymoon suite, I took off my pants, handed them to your mother, and said, 'Here, try these on! She did and said, 'These are too big, I can't wear them.' I replied, 'Exactly, I wear the pants in this family and I always will.' Ever since that night we have never had any problems. ''Hmmm,' said Mike. He thought that might be good thing to try. On his honeymoon, Mike took off his pants and said to Jane, 'Here try these on.' She tried them on and said, 'These are too large, they don't fit me. ' Mike said, 'Exactly, I wear the pants in this family, and I always will. I don't want you to ever forget that. Then Jane took off her panties, and handed them to Mike. She said, 'Here, you try on mine. He did and said, 'I can't get into your panties.' Jane said, 'Exactly. And if you don't change your smart ass attitude, you never will.' "And they lived happily ever after! " Jimbo, The Buffalo Theory as told by Cliff Clavin: No one can explain this as well as Cliff Clavin, on Cheers. One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm. and here's how it went: "Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. "In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers." Lee Tynes Jimbo, Sha, just dat other day Boudreaux pulls up to Thibodeaux house in a new truck... Thibodeaux say " Boudreaux where you get dat truck ".... Boudreaux say " you never going to believe this but this beautiful young thing with the big tetawns pulls up to my house she gets out dat truck and begins to take off her clothes... one piece at a time very slowly... THANK YOU EVERYONE

Jimbo, Here is a holiday warning I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving. This might save you the cost and embarrassment of being arrested for DUI's. As you know, people have been known to have unexpected brushes with the authorities from time to time, often on the way home after a "social session" with family or friends. Well, this year, it happened to me. I was out for the evening to a party and had more than several margaritas coupled with a bottle of rather nice red wine. It was held at a great Mexican restaurant. Although relaxed, I still had the common sense to know I was slightly over the limit. That's when I did something I've never done before...I took a taxi home. On the way home there was a police roadblock, but since it was a taxi they waved it past and I arrived home safely without incident. These roadblocks can be anywhere and I realized how lucky I was to have chosen to take a taxi. The real surprise to me was I had never driven a taxi before. I don't know where I got it, and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it. If you want to borrow it, give me a call. gptteebyrd@

o, as we look forward to the new year you may want to keep the Porcupine lesson in mind. You see, it was the coldest winter ever!! Many animals died because of the cold. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together to keep warm. This way they covered and protected themselves; but the quills of each one wounded their closest companions. After a while, they decided to distance themselves one from the other and they began to die, alone and frozen. They had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth. Wisely, they decided to go back to being together. They learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close relationship with their companions in order to receive the heat that came from the others. This way they were able to survive. The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but one in which each individual learns to live with the imperfections of others and can admire the other person's good qualities. The moral of the story is: Just learn to live with the Pricks in your life! Till next month‌ Jimbo

This years Coast Cruizers Christmas present went to a very special little girl. The Coast Cruizers members in the picture above want to thank all of you who came to our cruise-in’s and events. Your donations are the funds that help make all this possible. Also a special thanks goes out to our commercial sponsors for their generous donations. This was van number 6 that the Coast Cruizers gave to a needing child. For the last six years the Coast Cruizers found a reasonably priced handicap van, fixed it up and gave it to a child who will not be able to walk again. Sometimes people want to know where the Coast Cuizers spend the money the club makes at our cruise-ins and car shows. This is one the ways we give back. Tupelo Automobile Museum to close, its contents sold to benefit charitable educational foundation TUPELO Jane Spain’s favorite car in the Tupelo Automobile Museum is a 1954 Mercury Sun Valley. Painted a pale yellow, its innovative and distinctive plexiglass panoramic roof allowed passengers to soak up the views. And that’s what she and her late husband, Frank, did in the late 1990s, when they drove the car from Alaska back to Tupelo. The memories of that trip – even when the car broke down in the Yukon, where they had to wait a few days for parts – are indelibly etched in her mind. “It was an awesome adventure,” she said with a smile. But the Sun Valley, along with the other 177 vehicles in the museum, will be sold at auction in late April, never to be gathered under one roof again. Spain made the bittersweet decision to sell the cars because, after 16 years, it was no longer sustainable to run the museum. Most importantly, she said it was time to do what the construction of the museum was meant to do – fund a charitable educational foundation Frank had envisioned. Proceeds from the sale of the collection – whose value ranges from nearly $10 million to perhaps twice as much or even more – will go to the foundation. “Every nickel will go toward it,” Jane said. “I’m not keeping any of it.” Nor is she keeping any of the cars, despite the many memories and

stories that so many of them hold. Not even the beloved Sun Valley. “I have plenty of memories, but you know, if I clung to every memory, I’d keep so many of them and then I’d feel guilty if I didn’t keep this one or that one,” she said. “So my thing is it needs to make more memories – all of them do.” The cars will all find new homes. Some will go to collectors, some will likely go to museums in Europe and elsewhere. But Spain hopes that some of them, like the Sun Valley, will be driven again. “They have sat here, and we took very good care of them, but they need to be out on the road, and they need to start new experiences,” she said. “Most will hopefully go somewhere where somebody will make new memories with them.” The auction will be April 25-27, through a partnership with Bonhams Auctioneers and consultant Wayne Carini of Velocity Channel’s “Chasing Classic Cars.” Carini has been to Tupelo to review the collection, and he’ll be returning again next month. And he’s not the only master car restorer and enthusiast who knows about the Tupelo Automobile Museum. The next Saturday headed over to Long Beach Harbor 4th Sat cruise-in. Just a few that wanted to ride out this cold evening. Our next stop the following weekend brought us to Edgewater Mall for the Coast Cruizers toy/food drive along with their annual special needs van they donate to a local family in need. (To watch these families receive this is one of the most heart warming things around )

During the cold winter months we still have a lot of events going on right here on the coast. We began with the Ms. Coast Mustang Club and their annual show at Edgewater Mall. They also collect food for the Mother of Mercy Food Pantry. They had 83 cars /trucks come support them.

Finished out the Month in Bay Saint Louis with the Misfits Street Krewzers toy drive for CASA of Hancock County. With support from a lot of friends we had our biggest toy drive ever.

That evening stopped off at the Pass Christian harbor for the 3rd Sat. cruise-in. Another long day when you have a show then cruise in that evening but you gotta love the car life.

Thanks to all who donate the time, effort and items to make these events a success. See y'all somewhere or everywhere. Remember to watch for our friends out riding their bikes also. Al

ONLY CAR ITEMS ALLOWED

By: Joyce Lachaussee

The weather was kind of soupy but the die hard car buffs and hot rodders didn't let a little thing like weather bother them. We had William Steele with his '66 Chevelle and Artis Ford with his '74 VW Truck come from Smith County - their second trip to see us, and some faithfuls from Wiggins, Lucedale and Alabama come for the joy of looking and swapping stories.

Christmas came early for Mike Lachaussee. Santa brought him this HOT red '30 Ford Model A. Of course it has a 350 Chevy with 350 transmission! Mike is known as a lover of "stock" cars but a hot rod has always been on his bucket list. He has a 1931 Model A that is a future project. Mike said this little red hot rod was too good to pass up. While he's rebuilding his '31, he will drive in style. He has several other cars in what might be called Lachaussee's garage. He has 3 projects, a 1946 Ford truck, the '31 Model A and a '26 Model T. He has a 1946 Mercury he has just completely restored, a 1941 Ford Super Deluxe, a 1952 Dodge Truck, a 1955 Chevy, and a 1956 Thunderbird all of which are stock and running. All of this keeps him busy and out of trouble.

Dale Patterson has this 1946 Ford business coupe that is fairly stock. It has a flathead 8. Dale had one like this in High School and this isn't his first business coupe he has restored. Dale has a Depot Hack and a Truck that takes up a good portion of his time. This little '46 business coupe is pristine and Dale is selling at a fair price. Dale and his wife live in Wiggins and he travels pretty regularly to the Hardee's breakfast each month. You can find out more about this business coupe by coming to Hardee's and talking directly to Dale if you are interested.

Dale Poole purchased this 1962 Chevy Impala from Billy Cranfords estate. Dale has installed a 350 fuel injected engine, air condition, new transmission, tires and wheels. Dale is normally involved in drag racing and has a penchant for Vettes. This is a nice addition to his collection. He tells me this one won't be doing any drag racing! We hope everyone has a blessed and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please join us every second Friday at Hardee's in Lucedale starting at 7:30 til. Everyone is welcome.

Happy New Year! Hope 2019 brings you everything 2018 left out. We have to make 2019 the best year ever. November 2018 was sure a month I won't soon forget. This time of the year I get to write about things other than car shows and this month I really enjoyed writing this column, because I was able to write about an old friend. I first met Mike McCabe in the mid 1990's while he was working at Gulfport Tire, Gulfport Tire did all the work on my radio station company vehicle, and so I was in there from time to time. When I met Mike, he was an ASE Master Certified Mechanic and the best mechanic at that shop. It did not take long talking with him to learn how smart he was at figuring out a problem. When he left there and started his own shop I really missed him. So I would go by his shop with my personal vehicles when I had a problem, but my personal cars were fairly new and trouble free. Mike is very sharp and smart when it comes to cars and would easily get over my head with most discussions. But you knew he could solve any issue with a car. I would see Mike at concerts from time to time and we would talk. His taste in music was a little younger than mine but I would still run into him from time to time. In his off time he was a mechanic for an Outboard Drag Boat Racing team. That hobby started by re-wiring a drag boat that had some wiring issues…and went all the way to helping build a couple of drag boats and winning a couple of World Championships in Pro Gas and Modified Drag Boats. Mike did that hobby for over ten years. We also worked together at a local dirt stock car track, I was announcing and he was making judgment calls on the track over the radio. Hurricane Katrina wiped out his business and soon afterwards he got the opportunity to go to work for Phil Shaw and John Hans building and restoring cars, that grew into the Busted Wrench Garage. At first Mike just worked on projects for those guys and then it morphed into the museum work, the garage restoration work and with his work being so impressive… came the customers. Mike had always done production work at his shop which flowed with the economy. At Christmas time business always slowed down. Restoration work was done with folk's disposable income and stayed steady year round, which made Mike really like and enjoy the work. The museum cars and the customer cars allowed Mike to take the time he always wanted to do a job like he thought it should be done. He really honed his skills with rotisserie restorations and painting. Each paint job we stayed on it until it was perfect said Mike. His work is simply amazing… as is his attention to detail. Recently the owner of Busted Wrench Garage and Museum decided to retire and shut the place down. Mike is starting his own business and I think he is going to have all the business he can handle. Mike says “I don't quote prices too much,” he says “I charge $50 bucks an hour and divide those hours into 15 minute increments.” “I'm fair and honest with people and I don't overcharge for my work.” According to Mike you can redo 10 1969 Camaro doors and 9 of them will take you a day and then that one comes in that takes a week to get right. Mike believes in right… but he also has to make sure he is on the same page with his customers and that he says takes constant communication. He has

10

about 5 cars currently in his shop each with a distinct project in mind. He was telling me about a C-1 Corvette that he has coming in that will receive a new custom frame, Z-06 engine and configuration. It will be a brand new car with a 1958 Corvette body and look, but will drive like a brand new car. Mike has everything he needs in his new shop, including a nice paint booth. There are not that many people in South Mississippi completely restoring cars anymore, especially at the level of Mike's work. Special projects for Hot Rods are his specialty, he starts with mechanical to make sure the car will drive, handle and stop, all the systems of the car that work with safety and reliability. Then, then they can look at the cosmetics. “Some customers want to do it in phases and that's OK too, but it's easy to get backed up with work and sometimes I have to tell a customer it might be a month before I can get started on their project, but they are willing to wait because they want it done right.” Mike is still debating on the name of his business, he hasn't settled on one yet. His shop is located on Hwy 53 just off Hwy 49 in Gulfport. If you remember Street Dreams on Hwy 53 it's in the big shop on that property. Across the road from the old Shed Bar B Q. Helping Mike get the work out at the new shop will be James Keller, Mike Martin and Joel Porter. Nothing leaves the shop without Mike's stamp of approval says Mike, “because it's got my name on it.” If you need a Hot Rod project started or completed I would advise getting with Mike soon before his backlog gets too bad which in my estimation will not take long. I rarely, if ever, recommend someone for their quality of work, but I've known Mike McCabe a long time, seen the consistent quality of his work and

have no problem recommending him for any Hot Rod project. You can reach Mike at (228) 669-5996 during normal business hours. Follow Terry Mason's Hot Rod Show on Facebook to stay up to date. I want to thank Jimbo Perkins for the opportunity to write 17 FOREVER each month and I thank you for taking the time out of your life to read it also. I hope your winter Hot Rod projects are in high gear, have a Happy New Year and enjoy photos of Mike McCabe's incredible work. til next month…

The Small Wonders In pre-war America, most entrylevel transportation consisted of large cars costing $500.00 to $600.00. In Europe the transportation manufacturers were putting their drivers in much smaller cars, like the Fiat Topolino, Citroen 2CV, and the Volkswagen Beetle. One car modeled after these small European economy cars in the United States, was the Crosley, a Cincinnati, Ohio produced mini-car powered by a 2 cycle, 2 cylinder engine. Coincidently, in 1946, the Crosley was the first, affordable, mass produced, overhead camshaft engine. Crosley Corporation, later to be called Crosley Motors, had a lot of firsts in automotive history. The first to use the term Sport Utility Vehicle in 1947 for the 1948 model year convertible wagon, and the first in America to utilize 4-wheel caliper disc brakes. They were the first post war sports car in 1949 with the Hotshot. These cars were sub-compact cars bordering on micro-cars. Their station wagons were the most popular, but they also manufactured sedans, pickups, convertibles, their sports car, and a jeep like vehicle. All of Crosley’s models were lightweight (1,100 to 1,400 lbs.), body on frame cars with rigid axles front and rear. Their engines were less than 61 cubic inches. With the exception of the Hotshot and Farm-O-Road models, the majority of all Crosley models were on an 80 inch wheelbase featuring leaf springs. Powel Crosley had tried building automobiles early in the century, having a hand in the 1909 Marathon Six and the DeCross cycle car in 1913. He built his first car at the age of 12. He was much more successful making radios and refrigerators, and by the 1930’s he thought he would give the automobile industry another try. The Crosley measured just 120 inches long, length overall and was rated at about 15 hp, boasting a top speed of 50 mph. The cars $350.00 sticker price was $250.00 cheaper than a 6 cylinder, 2 door Chevrolet business coupe, yet the car didn’t make much of an impact. In the car-starved postwar years, Crosley resumed production. This time he used a Navy developed 4 cylinder, 772 cc engine. The engine was made of brazed copper and sheet steel with a fixed head, and it suffered chronically from quality problems, including holes in the cooling system. A cast iron block resolved the problem and Crosley went on to develop an entire line of cars from a station wagon to a sports car. These vehicles were produced at Crosley’s Marion, Indiana plant. The Hotshot won its class at the Sebring 12 hour race in 1950. Production of mainstream cars caught up with public demand and soon the market for Crosley’s tiny cars dried up. The company ceased production on July 3, 1952. Emulating Crosley’s postwar efforts on a much smaller scale was the Athens, Ohio maker of the King Midget. This was a small 1 passenger kit car originally, that was later sold as a completed vehicle. You remember seeing these inexpensive little cars advertised in magazines and various periodicals. It was advertised as a 500 pound car for $500.00. About 5,000 were sold from 1946 to 1969.

12

JANUARY 2019

The first generation King Midget was a single passenger car designed to resemble a midget racer. The package included the chassis, axles, steering assembly, springs, instruction manual, plus dimensioned plans for the sheet metal, all for the cost of $270.00. It would accept any one cylinder engine. By 1947 the Model 1 was also available in assembled form powered by a 6 hp Wisconsin engine. Since adding a differential would have increased the cost, the car was driven by the right wheel only. It used a centrifugal clutch designed by Orcutt. A two passenger micro car was developed in 1947. In total, 9 separate prototypes were built, until the designers met their goals of lightness, simplicity, and economy. The car was known as the Model 2. When it appeared on the cover of Popular Science magazine in 1951, the Model 2 was a two-passenger convertible offered either fully assembled or as a kit, powered by a 23 cubic inch 7.5 side valve Wisconsin AENL engine. With a 72 inch wheelbase it measured only 102 inches overall. This was 8 inches shorter that a Crosley 4 CC. The Model 2 was still an extremely basic car with no speedometer or reverse, but it was light, strong, and still sold for $500.00. A four passenger, 1952 Crosley CD sedan (for contrast) fully assembled, could be purchased for $943.00 and a wagon for $1002.00. Soon after the Model 2 was in production, the company began to offer the option of a two speed automatic transmission that included reverse. In the 1950’s, Midget Motors developed the Junior and the Trainer. Both models were tube framed motorized four-wheelers that were the forerunners of the go-karts and all-terrain vehicles that were to become popular later. So there you have it. The auto industry has long been influenced by car enthusiasts with imagination, forward thinking, and fabricating genius. We are still carrying on that tradition with our customizing ideas. We are not odd, just creative. Just a note: Uncle Ezra took his driver’s test last week. He got 8 out of 10. The other 2 guys jumped clear!

Gotta Cruise!

BEAUTY HACKS

I

t is officially 2019; time for my annual beauty article. This year I am a bit early on my attractive finds because I have found a few new products that I simply could not wait to share with our readers! I sincerely hope some of these products will have you feeling like you look your absolute best in the new year. My absolute most favorite new product is the Diamond Oil Glow Dry by Redken! I have always wondered what products worked best to add a Bravo Real Housewife quality shine. Trying everything from mayonnaise to coconut oil to over the counter products, nothing quite delivered the results I was looking for. Until now that is. I tried Redken's Diamond Oil Glow Dry for the first time in October and I am hooked. I not only loved the smell and was stunned by the shimmery outcome, but the results I saw were confirmed by other gals as well. In the short time since I started using it, I have had a number of women ask me what I use on my hair and received several comments about how shiny my hair is. You can apply it to damp hair before a blow-dry or to dry hair for shiny finish. With a heat protectant and heatresponsive oil technology, it helps prevent hair breakage while giving you optimal reflection and maximum shine. In my small apartment, I am often trying to utilize the space I have and falling short of having enough of it, especially when I do my hair and makeup, getting glammed up for a photo shoot or a night out on the town. With no sink space, I needed a solution and found it with a dimmable LED light up makeup mirror. Using the battery operated mirror, I can spread all my makeup out on the floor and have ample space to get my glam on! I first saw a similar mirror on the TV show Jersey Shore Family Reunion. Reality star JWOWW used it for makeup while traveling and I thought that it might be exactly what I needed. You can purchase a mirror online on websites like Amazon and eBay for around $16. The portable mirror is ideal for travel, can be used via batteries or a USB cord and has a light which not only lights up your face in a darker room or helps for better brow tweezing, but the lighting is ideal for taking better selfies. As they say, the lighting can make or break a selfie. To remove makeup foundation from clothing, use shaving cream; scrub & rinse. If you spread baby powder on an oil stain, leave it on the item overnight & it will be gone when you get up the next morning. Mix vinegar, hot water & dish soap together to remove many common stains. This works on ketchup, but not red wine unfortunately. Use rubbing alcohol to get ink stains out of clothing. Vodka not only makes for a good drink, but it can be used to clean otherwise unwashable items. You can use vodka to clean items that cannot be washed, like leather or sequins, plus it gets rid of odors while sterilizing the item. This tip came from one of my favorite makeup artists, Married to Rock reality show star, Josie Stevens. Have rusty jewelry that needs new life? Soak it in water with toothpaste for one hour. It will give the jewelry back its shine. If you are anything like me, I seem to have huge, noticeable and annoying blackheads. Try using toothpaste on a soft bristle toothbrush to gently scrub your nose, and then rinse to rinse away the bothersome blackheads.

Lemons are ideal for helping with several beauty issues. If you cannot run out to the store, they may be just what you need in a pickle. If you realize you are out of deodorant and cannot get to the store, rubbing a lemon slice under your arms can do just the trick in a pinch. For an at home do it yourself wax, make a mix of sugar, water and lemon juice. Wisk the mix and then heat it via stovetop boiling or microwave. Spread it over your hair and use strips of material to remove it. If you are run down, tired, stressed out or overworked, you are likely plagued by dark under eye circles. For dark circles, take lemon juice and olive oil and dab it on a cotton pad around your eyes. For under eye puffiness due to sleepiness or allergies, the delicate skin under your eyes can take a beating and lead to premature wrinkling. For myself in particular, allergies give me super puffy under eyes, so I use SKYN ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels. Just remove the backing and apply the gel side under your eye for ten minutes. They can be used weekly or whenever you need a quick fix. The gels are individually wrapped so they can easily be thrown into a travel bag to leave you looking refreshed instead of jet lagged. They not only help with the puffiness, but they leave your eyes feeling ultra refreshed. The cooling transdermal gel patches infuse the eye area with Icelandic glacial waters and concentrated doses of firming ingredients to de-puff, tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while improving the blood flow and helping to prevent future damage. The 2017 Good Housekeeping Beauty Lab Award Winner in Top Tested Eye Skincare, the 100% vegan and crueltyfree hydro gels are safe for even the most sensitive skin. My skin is super sensitive and these are immensely soothing. Red lipstick is my go to color for a super seductive or classic pinup look. However, as some of you may well know, red lipstick can run horribly, particularly when eating. I have had several occasions where opening my mouth wide to fit something like a sandwich in it, I have ended up with a bright red streak across my chin. A streak of red that neither wipes off easily nor can it be removed without taking the makeup foundation off of your chin.

My new fix to this is the Sephora Collection (Sephora's makeup line sold exclusively in their store and on their website) Beauty Amplifier Universal Lip Liner which helps make perfectly lined lips possible. It is a whiteish clear, long-lasting waterproof lip liner that prevents lipstick from feathering. The colorless liner has a longlasting waterproof formula that prevents lipstick from feathering. Plus, this product is not tested on animals, which is something I always check for on my cosmetics. To use this with your lipstick, I use it second. For my lip application, I start by lining my lips with my colored pencil, say for example if I am wearing a red lipstick, I will apply my red lip liner first and foremost. Do not forget you can change your look and play with the shape of your lips simply by how you line them. You can line them larger, smaller or more pointed in your Cupid's bow; However you want for the desired effect. Once I get the red liner just right, I apply the white Sephora Beauty Amplifier Universal Lip Liner to the outside of the red. The

white Sephora liner works well at keeping certain spots lipstick free, so I apply it second rather than first because if I mess up the Sephora liner, it may make a spot of my lips difficult to add color to, because as advertised, it successfully keeps the lipstick from that area. You do not want to end up with only one spot of your lips colorless. After applying the colored liner, apply the white universal lip liner to the area outside of the lip line. Start at the center of the upper lip and move towards the outer sides. Then repeat on the lower lip. I apply the Sephora white liner not just to the outside line of my red colored lipliner, but also to my chin. As odd as that may sound, as I mentioned above about lipstick running when you are eating, I have found that if I apply the white liner onto my chin, it keeps my chin lipstick free as well. So I can eat and drink without worry. After that, I will add my desired lipstick and a shine on top of that. Then you are done and free to enjoy a feathering-free evening. And if you are looking for an ideal retro shade of red, I suggest NYX Professional Makeup cosmetics matte lipstick in Eden. Once applied, add a bit of clear or tinted gloss, just to the middle part of your upper and lower lips, over the top of the matte lipstick. This placement gives it a 3D effect and adds some shine, yet it is applied away from the corners of your lips where it is more likely to run off. Matte lipstick definitely stays put better than other types of lip color, but matte can be a bit drying to lips, especially if they are already slightly chapped. Because lipstick can accentuate dry or chapped lips, try to exfoliate your lips before applying lipstick, especially if it is a matte style of lipstick. To exfoliate your lips, put Vaseline on a toothbrush and gently brush it on your lips. Next, pat off the excess skin that comes off. Then add your lipstick. If you return home at the end of the night to find that your red is not easily coming off (as it often does if it is a matte style or a darker color, like red), use coconut oil to take the lipstick off. Do not delay on adding any of the above tips or products to your beauty arsenal. Just in time for a new year of family gatherings, holidays, graduations, reunions, birthdays and special events that you will want to be looking your best for!

The weather was freezing but the coffee was piping hot for the December Texoma Cars & Coffee at Main Street Motors. Participants came from across Texoma to line their cars along Main Street and enjoy the company of other car enthusiasts. This month, the focus was on Aimee Freise’s Volkswagen Beetle. This restored bright yellow beauty has been chosen for a very special honor. “Autobahn Volkswagen Dealership in Fort Worth is working with Paramount Pictures to do a photoshoot for the new Transformers premier movie, where BumbleBee is coming back as the original Volkswagen Beetle,” said Aimee. “They’ve asked me to bring my 1969 Beetle, Layla, because it’s yellow, come to the photoshoot and lead a cruise with the local Air Coolers from the dealership to the Coyote DriveIn for another photoshoot...And then have the premier of the Transformers movie.” “The effort is just paying off with the car because who would have thought that a Beetle, when you’ve got your Bel Airs and Corvettes and all that, would be picked for a movie photoshoot!” said Aimee. “And Transformers of all things. I get to represent BumbleBee. I’m so excited! “ The premier at Coyote Drive-In will be held on December 17, 2018. As well as Aimee’s fantastic news, there was plenty of car talk -Including a member of the disbanded Denison Corvette Club who brought out both his Corvette, photos of the cruises and shows the club had, as well as his very cool, vintage club jackets. (See photos at the bottom left-hand corner of the following page.) Also, a Pink Ladies, ladies only car group will start meeting every second Saturday from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Main Street Motors. All ladies welcome! Check out the invite: Can’t wait to see you there!

Saturday, October 27, 2018 was a beautiful, sunny day which contributed to an outstanding turnout of 392 registered vehicles and more than 500 visitors at the Custom Cruisers XXXI Annual Sheriff Office Benefit (SOB) Car Show. This show is run by Custom Cruisers, a car club based in East Jefferson Parish, Louisiana as an annual fundraiser for equipment for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff ’s Office (JPSO). It has grown to be one of the largest shows in the area, bringing together some of the most incredible vehicles from throughout south Louisiana. In addition to raising funds for the Sheriff ’s Office, donations were also taken for the families of 50 Panama City, Florida deputies who lost everything due to Hurricane Michael. The generosity of cruisers never fails to awe and inspire me. It is with the help of this show that some of the deputies of the JPSO will have equipment that can save their lives while they are on the streets saving others.

Halloween Party By The Water The Boo Bash Hosted by Peacock Productions Photos & Story by: Brian Barsema Well this year my cars just have been nice to me. A car in the paint shop for 10 weeks, 4 blown engines, a rear end broken, a fire on my truck during a burnout competition, and busy college course schedule has left me looking to change my luck. Looking to Georgia for a nice trip north. I was pleasantly surprised by this car show off the bat. The locals were extremely nice and old town feel of downtown just made everything better. The back drop to this had a beautiful boat, a light house harbor type building, and view of the islands water made this show just awesome. The Boo Bash was an entertaining car show meant to raise money for local woman. The cars were a surprising variety of everything. Rat rods, show car classics, Hot rods, dragsters, this little community came out to support with a good showing of a little bit of everything. This show had a little market that was old town farmer market feel. I probably spent all my fun money on the just awesome homemade candies there. This little area of Georgia was a calm and a sweet venue for a show. I really hope to visit this area of Georgia again one day soon.

Memory of A Local Legend Indian River Rumble - Nov 3, 2018 Photos & Story by: Brian Barsema Getting cars back up and running visiting shows sometimes is hard. Going to shows to remember someone you knew is not. The Indian River Rumble in Titusville Florida is always a site to see. In an area that is always rich in Hot Rods, and Rat Rods the rumble puts on a good little show every year. Florida drag racing, hot rod, and Rat rod community lost someone who was dear to everyone “Stormin Gary Gorman to cancer. The Derelicts Car Club Florida hosted this event more as a celebration of life, raising money for a part of their family Mrs. Gorman. This show always acts as a little preview of some of the unique cars you will see at Daytona Turkey Run this year. I tell you what, some clean rides came out and the Rats made their presence known. New builds galore and old ones showed up for this event. Music, raffles, and a good amount of money raised for a good cause made this show. Year in and year out this show gets better every year. This was a perfect send off and salute to a local legend.

your project. You are just trying to protect the area, not build a house.

Welcome Back to this months OVERSPRAY HOW-TO do kustom paint by yours truly. This months lesson is a funky metal panel I did in a duet with my step daughter Gracie. Even she was frustrated at times but loved the finished out come so don’t get discouraged in any project you may take on because the final pull is magic. !!!!

5 Now here is where it gets interesting. I recreate the flame lick at another angle and make sure I’m happy with the placement just like I was before. This may take many times or once. Maybe the force is with you and you knock it out the park. I went in the opposite direction with this lick to show balance and depth. Once I was happy with it I DID it again. Just put another lick on your design or two until your happy with it. After everything was masked off I looked around for something to use as a stencil and grabbed my gear stencil made by Artool. You can use anything like fabric or whatever has a funky design in it and use that just as I did. So I lay my stencil on it and dust it with bright white and just make sure I cover the flame licks. This scheme is focused on them and not the background so use whatever you have or just dust behind the licks with white it will turn out just fine regardless.

1 First I started with a plain white sheet of metal I had laying around. I first sanded it with a gray scuff pad to ensure my paint would stick. 2 I painted the panel with black primer for this piece because I knew I would be putting a lot of tape on this project and I wanted to make sure the tape didn’t lift the black up. Also it was a double edge sword because my background could be black as well so it just worked out great to save time and cut a corner. 3 I grabbed my trusty 3m fine line tape and added me about a quarter inch border all the way around my panel. I didn't really measure it and it just was put where I wanted it and created a prefect little border around the entire piece. I then masked from the 3m to the edge to protect the outer edge of all the piece. This will just be a cool little border for the art when I’m done and will look kinda cool in the end but feel free to border yours anyway you would like. I just chose to square this one but yours could be any shape. Have fun with your creative expression and go where you want.

6 So now is where the fun begins. When you taped the layers of licks you were doing a method called sequential masking. I pull off the last lick I taped off first. I make sure to leave the other licks as a whole but their days are numbered I promise you. After you pull off the layer you will be left with a dark lick that needs attention. So I looked around again and found some rough fabric and laid it on top of the lick and dusted it white to give it texture. I then shaded upward and downward where the lick has another crossing over it to show depth. Its very important to show depth and it will get easier as it goes for you to grasp the concept of “far and away” as you grow in your craft. After you show your depth and texture it or vica versa, you peel back the next layer of lick. (very carefully) You repeat the process until all the layers are done and your looking at a funky white toned panel ready for color.

4 I used my 3m fine line and rolled it into a groovy flame lick kinda hot rod style. I pulled it up numerous times until I was happy with the placement as you should too. When I was finally happy with it I then masked it off. If you didn't prime your panel and are a little scared of it lifting your project you can “kill “ your tape by simply taping it across your shirt or jeans a few times before you add it to

7 I started the coloring with a hot pink kandy or transparent paint. I worked it from the bottom and flowed upward with it and wanted the bottom of it to be more vibrant. I then added a drop of purple to my mix to slightly change the color and over reduced it to make a nice blending substance. I then blended from the top down to make it sink back a hair. I let it (Continued on page 28)

flash (dry) and then repeated until the right tempo was created. (when you reduce your paints you can take your time and get more smooth flows of transitions.) so now I am happy with my transitions and it looks kinda cool so I am happy with it. 8 Finally I pull the border off the out side and it reveals a nice solid black out line that is crisp and makes the colors pop even more. I hit it with a few layers of clear coat and let it sit for the night. This was a fun piece and just something I threw together. All and all it was great to do it side by side with my step daughter.

Momma’s

Easy Dinner Rolls 1 Cup Flour 1/2 Cup Milk 1 Teaspoon Salt 2 Tablespoons Mayo Combine all ingredients, spoon into a greased muffin pan. Cook at 350 F for 15 minutes or until done and golden brown.

Your father probably told you a few things, but just in case he wasn’t around enough, here are some words of wisdom you might have missed out on: Buy high quality tools, so you only have to buy them once. Keep a change of clothes at the office. Never hit anyone unless they are an immediate threat. Every hat should serve a purpose. Never take her to the movies on the first date. Learn to wet shave. Nothing looks more badass than a well-tailored suit. Shave with the grain on the first go-around. Always look a person in the eye when you talk to them. Buy a plunger before you need a plunger. Exercise makes you happy. Run, lift, and play sports. Brush your teeth before you put on your tie. A small amount of your paycheck should go directly to your savings account every month. Call Mom and Dad every week. Never wear a clip-on tie. Give a firm handshake. Compliment her shoes. Never leave a pint unfinished. If you aren’t confident, fake it. It will come around. You can tell the size of a man by the size of things that bother him. Be conscious of your body language. The only reason to ever point a gun at someone is if you intend to shoot them. Period. Always stand to shake someone’s hand. Never lend anything you can’t afford to lose. Ask more than you answer. Everybody likes to talk about themselves. Never have sex with anyone that doesn’t want it as much as you. Go for women out of your league. You may end up surprised. Manliness is not only being able to take care of yourself, but others as well. Go with the decision that will make for a good story. When you walk, look straight ahead, not at your feet. Nice guys don’t finish last, boring guys do. Find your passion and figure out how to get paid for it. Don’t let the little head do the thinking for the big head. No matter their job or status, everyone deserves your respect. The most important thing you can learn is personal responsibility. Bad things happen; it’s your job to overcome them. The first one to get angry loses. A man does what needs to be done without complaining. Never stop learning. Always go out into public dressed like you’re about to meet the love of your life. Don’t change yourself just to make someone happy. If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. Luck favors the prepared. Women find confidence sexy as hell. Do whatever you want to do, but be the best at it. No one is on their deathbed wishing they spent more time at work.

Dirt Track Revival … Chavus Holland Welcome back everyone! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!!! As you all know, we are currently in the “off season” for racing. However, that doesn't mean that we have totally neglected racing! It's actually quite the opposite! It's the time of the year that we regroup and get ready for the upcoming racing season. We are slowly checking things off the list and we are constantly talking racing strategies and scenarios for the 2019 season! We are watching/studying old racing videos and talking about what we will do different this season to hopefully improve our finishes throughout the year. Racing never quits in this house! While I was trying to decide what to write about this month, Chase made this suggestion. “Write about some of our past races from the early years!” Great idea!... I'm going to use this downtime to tell you all a story or two about our past racing adventures. These stories will be told from my perspective and will be as accurate as I remember them. I'm going to do my best to keep them positive and try not to bash anyone (or any racetrack). I love racing! I want racing to continue to roar back to life! This story I'm about to tell is one of many that got us where we are today. Since we began racing, I've had to remind Adrian, constantly (when she's getting onto me about all the drama in racing) DRAMA is everywhere these days! It doesn't matter if you are at a little league baseball game, cheerleader tryouts, soccer fields, or at church on Sunday! (yeah, I said it!!!) Drama is a part of this day and age…EVEN if you try to avoid it. So many times, it just rears its ugly face! In racing, we went through a slump that it seemed like we were always in the middle of some sort of drama! Those who know me well, know what I'm talking about…now don't misunderstand me here…I'm not saying that some of this racing drama that we were caught up in was not self-inflicted! I'm guilty of stirring the pot! However, I do believe EVERYTHING IN RACING SHOULD BE EARNED…EVERYONE SHOULDN'T GET A TROPHY JUST BECAUSE!...So here we go! It was May of 2015. Chase was only 11 years old!!! At the time, we owned an adult sized Champ Kart (a racing kart with a roll cage) that we were competing with at our local dirt kart track. I had to move Chase into this adult class because there were no kids his age racing junior champ karts locally. Racing in this adult class had almost dried up around here too, so the races were becoming few and far between! Chase had won the huge, annual Huey Watts Memorial Icebreaker Race in February 2015 (in Gulfport), as well as several other dirt races so far this season…We were looking for a place to race more frequently and had began to hear about a new class of adult champ karts racing at Sunny South Raceway in Grand Bay, Alabama. We heard talk of this guy (in his twenties) who was smoking the field every weekend! The word was, if you showed up at SSR you would be racing for 2nd position unless JT Pryor broke, because he was untouchable! He was putting a straightaway or more gap on the entire field of karts each week! Hmmmm….OK, Challenge accepted! I

researched the rules for the class and began to change up our kart for this track. Now this was an asphalt track, but after a few phone calls back and fourth with our chassis builder we felt like we were dialed in at the shop and ready to come take a shot at the title! In his earlier years, Chase had competed in the kid classes at SSR and had always been a front runner there bringing home multiple wins and always finishing in the top 3! However, these adult karts were significantly faster! I'll admit, I was kind of nervous, but I believed in Chase and felt like he would adapt quickly! We rolled in with our kart on Memorial Day Weekend 2015. (a 2-night race weekend) They were having a big race and we were welcomed and greeted by our competitors. (Including JT Pryor and his Dad) We weren't considered a threat at this point! Chase was just a little kid and hopefully he could stay out of the way! LOL… The track personnel and fans were all thankful to see us and polite to us as well. We unloaded our kart and got ready for practice. I pleaded with Chase how important it was to get a feel for the kart and the track before opening this thing up! Obviously, a lap or two was all he needed, as he opened it up and began to show some speed in the pack! He looked good, but I knew we were just shaking down this kart and settling in. We made a couple small adjustments and lined up for qualifying. I remember having several visitors to our pits wanting to know where we were from and how old Chase was. “11 years old! WOW!!!” After qualifying, Chase had all eyes on him! He had laid down a Qualifying lap just thousandths of a second off the leader! We got more visits from some locals who were so excited to finally see some competition for JT Pryor. I had a different gearing set-up on Chase's kart than what the others were running, which allowed Chase to jump out to a 5 or 6 kart length lead on the starts, but the downside to it, was in about 3 laps JT would reel him in and pass him! As long as Chase tucked right in behind JT, he could stay in his draft and ride right on his rear bumper, but if he challenged for the lead and swooped out of the draft he went backwards! FAST!!! This was all new to Chase and ME!!! We had never talked about this scenario before! I never would have thought you could draft in a go kart! But you can! We went home 2nd that first night! I was very pleased with these results! Chase however…Not so much…He was bent! LOL…We discussed “drafting” all the way home and into the next day! I told Chase that it was a technique that required skill, patience, and practice to master. He explained to me how he could feel the draft because while he was out front leading the race, he felt the wind blowing on his helmet and could feel the slack of his shoulder harness blowing in the wind. When he tucked in behind JT, he said the wind was off his helmet and he described his shoulder harness straps as floating as if there was no gravity! Pretty observant for a kid! We returned to race the next night and Chase was on a mission! I had explained to him about how to pass in the draft…he would need to back off JT's bumper and get a run before doing a sling shot pass for the lead! He went out eager to test this theory! Chase jumped out front of the pack for the first few laps just as expected. JT closed in on him and took over the top spot. Chase swooped into his draft and wasted no time dropping back, making a run and reclaiming that top spot like a pro! JT seemed to be toying with Chase, as this time he stayed right on Chase's bumper…As the laps winded down I began to realize we were a sitting duck! The one thing Chase and I didn't go over in detail was timing the pass! JT waited until the white flag was in the air as he fell back a few kart lengths and put the final pass on Chase for the win! VERY EXCITING race! Our next race at SSR would be on June 20, 2015. Sunny South Raceway had placed a $100 Bounty on the “undefeated” JT Pryor. If anyone could beat him, they would win the $100 bounty in addition to the other winnings offered by SSR. This Feature race began much like the last race, with Chase and JT swapping the lead several times as they pulled away from the rest of the competition. This time Chase was in position but he got excited and pulled the trigger too soon! JT powered back to the lead and it looked like it was going to be a repeat of the previous race! However, Chase wasn't having it! He went for an

all or nothing, toenailed throttle, WIDE OPEN dive into turn 3 as he swooped beside JT coming off turn 4! Checkered flag in the air!!! Fans on their feet!!! CHASE FOR THE WIN BY INCHES!!!!! Clean pass! No contact! From my vantage point, CHASE got him by about a foot at the line! We were fist pumping, high fiving, and celebrating! (May or may not of had a few proud tears rolling down my cheeks!) People were congratulating us left and right as we were celebrating this fantastic win!....REMEMBER the drama I mentioned earlier….here we go! As Chase pulls up to the pit exit to get the checkered flag for his victory lap… he's rudely waved into the pits by the corner worker as the announcer announces that JT Pryor is the official winner! WAIT… WHAT???? Yep, according to the scoring system they have JT Pryor as the winner by thousandths of a second! JT's Dad stopped me on the way to tech and said “We didn't win that race! Chase had JT beat at the line!” I walked over to JT's kart at tech, he had just come in from his victory lap, and I asked if he thought he had beat Chase? I wasn't trying to be a butthole, or a poor sport… I was just wondering what it looked like from his standpoint. He said, “Man I don't know?” I asked Chase the same, he said “Daddy! I got him!!! I had him by at least a foot at the flag stand!!!” Ok so what do you do now? No one is mad or hostile, but there is a bunch of confusion! By this time, we've been surrounded by a crowd of fans for both teams, and according to the census, it's looking like the track has gotten it wrong! I'm in a situation here, so right as I'm about to accept it as called and walk away…Adrian (of all people) says that she's got proof that Chase won… but doesn't want to throw the lady (with the proof) under the bus! It turns out that the track photographer was snapping action shots of the battle and she has a clear shot of the two competitors at the flag stand! WELL SLING IT OUT AND LET'S SETTLE THIS! (That's my thought!) You see, what's running through my mind at this point is, WE don't want anything we haven't earned! We don't want this win just because it's a “feel good” moment to see the underdog come out on top! But we also DO want what's ours! As the track owner walks up into the crowd, he shows me a printout from his scoring system. Sure enough, it has JT as the winner by thousandths of a second…the photographer speaks up and says, “I've got a picture”. The track owner asks what the picture shows? She says, “The kid won!” He says well there it is…we all viewed the photo and agreed that Chase was the official winner!

Chase in Victory Lane at the 2015 Icebreaker!

Victory Lane at SSR with the hardware!!! The track announced the correction, and they sent Chase out for his, well deserved, victory lap! The track admitted that they have had issues with their system glitching out because of interference with people placing their own personal transponder beacons next to the track's beacon. The Track issued another public apology on their Facebook page the following week also acknowledging the great sportsmanship from both race teams where they said “We had a computer glitch at the end of the Sr Champ race. JT was announced as the winner while Chase Holland was about a foot ahead at the finish line. JT Pryor came to us and said he did not win the race. Chase Holland came to us and said he thought he won the race.” It was a very memorable night to say the least! Hope you all enjoyed this story! Thank you all for reading! Until next time…Chavus

Car Tune Up Checklist By Lyndon Bell The concept of a car “Tune-up” has changed considerably over the years. With the advent of contemporary electronics systems, many of the items that formerly needed attention in the maintenance procedure known as a tune-up no longer even exist in cars. Points, condensers, and rotors, have all fallen by the wayside, displaced by modern electronic ignition systems. Similarly, the adoption of hydraulic valves, lifetime transmission fluids, and selfadjusting clutches has transformed those items into selfmaintaining components as well. Today’s “Tune-up” is more about changing filters and fluids than it is replacing physical parts. In fact, in most instances it isn’t even called a tune-up any more, it’s referred to as a “major service” and is typically conducted every two years, or 30,000 miles whichever, as they say, comes first. If you have an older car, one built before roughly 1980 or so, your car may well require attention in physical areas as well as fluid and filter changes. For that reason, we’ll cover those items as well. However, to find out which tools, parts and procedures apply to your car and which do not, consult your owner’s manual. Keep in mind; this car tune up checklist is not a procedural for accomplishing a tune-up. We highly recommend you buy the service manual for your car and follow the list of procedures outlined therein. The service manual and the owner's manual that came with your car are two very different items. Service manuals are usually sold at the dealer's service department - or online for older cars. With that said, in most instances you will need: Fuel Filter, Spark Plugs, Ratchet-type socket wrench, Appropriately sized spark plug socket, Spark Plug Gapping Tool, Owner's Manual, Service manual, Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers, Combination Crescent/Open End Wrench Set, Distributor Cap, Spark Plug Wires, Ignition Points and Rotor (for older cars), Air Filter, Oil Filter, Engine Oil, Engine Coolant and Distilled Water, Clutch/Brake Fluid, Power Steering Fluid, Transmission Oil/Fluid, Windshield Washer Fluid, PCV Valve, Replacement Drive Belts (Serpentine, Timing - etc.) VERY IMPORTANT: If you choose to change your auto's fluids yourself, dispose of the old fluids properly. Always take them to a gas station, or another facility suitably equipped to appropriately handle toxic automotive liquids. Under no circumstances should you ever put automotive fluids in your household garbage. This includes leaving gallon milk jugs full of oil/fluids on the curb for the trash collection service. NEVER EVER dump them into a storm drain on the street, flush them down a toilet, or dispose of them in any way, which could lead to them entering the water /sewer system.

When you change your engine oil, change the oil filter as well. Changing the oil and leaving the dirty filter in place is like not changing the oil at all. Your fuel and air filters should be changed at the same time to ensure your engine is getting the most from its intake and combustion systems. Many newer spark plugs are "platinum-tipped" and can last up to 60,000 miles between changes. To find out if your car is so equipped, simply remove one of the plugs and read it. If you change your spark plugs, change all of the spark plug wires as well. Do so one at a time so you don't have to worry about connecting the proper plug to the proper lead on the distributor to maintain your engine's firing order (consult the service manual for a description of firing orders, if you are unsure of what this means). While you're at it, on older cars (pre-1980) you may need to replace the distributor cap, ignition points, and the cap's rotor. The ignition timing should also be adjusted as part of this procedure. Be aware this is an operation that must be executed absolutely precisely to ensure your engine runs properly. Make sure you have the vehicle's service manual to ensure you do it correctly. Your battery should also be checked to ensure it is free of corrosion, as well as topped up with distilled water (if it isn't a sealed battery). Clutch and valve adjustments are virtually self-maintaining on modern cars. However, on an older car it may be required to undertake them. Valve adjustments are relatively easy for a mechanically oriented individual. Again though, we highly recommend consulting your service manual for the accurate measurements. A clutch adjustment on the other hand, performing one easily requires a vehicle lift and may even require removing the transmission housing. If you're hard-core mechanical, and you look upon this as a relaxing way to pass a Saturday - more power to you. Otherwise, you'll want to leave this one to a professional. The drive belts (also known as the "fan belt" should be inspected for wear and replaced if needed. These are also self-adjusting on modern cars, but may need an adjustment to maintain the proper tension on older cars. Your service manual will outline the steps required. The other belt you need to be concerned about is the timing belt. This generally requires dismantling part of the engine to service. The positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV valve) should be replaced during the tune-up procedure on cars so equipped to ensure gases escape in a controlled manner from the engine's crankcase. Again, keep in mind, this is only a car tune up checklist of items you'll need should you decide to execute one yourself. Always consult with a professional mechanic and/or the service manual before setting wrench to engine if you are unsure about any of the information listed here. Conrad Bell finds beauty in functionality, performance and utility. A great driving car, he believes, will come to represent beauty over time; an ill-performing automobile, no matter how shapely its bodywork, will always be incapable of imparting satisfaction. In other words, if it's got the moves, it's a worthy dance partner. autobytel.com

Every person has a gift to give. It could be knowledge, music, public speaking, art, etc. However, if you don’t give it, it only lasts your lifetime. Share it, and you become immortal… Donna “Sugar Bug” White

An Ordinary Girl in an Extraordinary World First and foremost, this isn’t going to be my “story”. Let me explain why…..the first story ever told is the one people remember the most. I have had and still have many precious people in my life. But, I also believe there are many more in the future, and I would never want them left out of the overall story. So, for now, here are a few tidbits…. Born in 1970, I was raised and still live in a small community called Ryan’s Well in northeast Mississippi. It’s a place that children can still play in the yards, everyone knows their neighbors, and you wave at the cars you meet on the road. After a long weekend out on the road, I still love to come home and wave at those same folks. My dad, who died on my birthday in 2017, was a Baptist preacher as well as a mechanic; my mother, Della Jean, was at one time a nurse. I have three brothers (Dale, Daris, and Daniel). We affectionately refer to ourselves as the “Damn D’s”. My daughter, Cheyene Rayne, is sixteen years young and will be a full-time college student in January. You will often see her sitting in the stands or taking pictures when I’m at a race, beaming from ear to ear. As a teenager, I learned to drive in a 1965 Chevy II Nova, which I still have, and also learned to drive a straight-stick in a VW dune buggy that my dad made. As a child, we would often go to Birmingham, Alabama to the round track. This, along with racing my friends in the Nova on the road I grew up on, began my love for cars and racing. Several years ago, a friend asked me to help him line up on the track, and I instantly fell in love with actually being out there instead of the stands or in the pits watching. I have never and still don’t watch racing on TV, so I didn’t even realize there was such a thing as a BUG. Several of my drivers would call me a BUG, but I thought they were just picking on me. It was finally explained to me by Wayne Sims, who is not only one of my drivers, but also a dear friend. The conversation came up as I was sitting in the stands between rounds near Memphis, Tennessee and was pondering how to get a car exactly centered in the groove when I couldn’t see the tires. Not only did I learn I was a BUG that night, but I also applied a little physics and got out and centered them up. It is very dangerous to do it the way I do, but it is one of the parts of what I do that is the most exciting to me. I know that something can happen at any time. But I also know one thing for certain….if I am in front of a car, you can rest assured I trust that driver completely. Accidents can happen, but I can say without hesitation that not a single one I work for would ever do something intentionally to me. When I step out onto the track, I never fear for my own safety. I am that sure of not only their abilities, but my own as well. I do fear for each of them though. Each person sitting in the seat is very important to me, and I never want anything to happen to them. I am, however, aware that something

could. Always smiling at them before I walk away, I know that I could be the last person they see. Morbid? Yes. But it is the reality. That is why that smile and a quick tap on the hood is important to both of us. I often get asked why I don’t accept money to BUG. There are several reasons. First of all, I have some drivers who can barely afford fuel, much less be able to afford to pay someone to help them. So, if I don’t accept it from anyone, then they will never feel bad for not being able to afford it. Secondly, it is my hobby… without accepting money, I have the option of telling someone “no” without owing a “yes”. I have some people that I refuse to BUG for….because they (or their team members) are dangerous to themselves and others, they have a bad attitude, they’re chasing fame, or they’re disrespectful. . I consider it my dime and my time….and I won’t waste either one of them more than once on anyone. Also, if I don’t accept money from drivers, then it would be obvious that I have no motive other than bringing attention to BUGs and racing. I see people every day in the racing world who sell their soul, walk over others, or being in general a bad person to make a dime…..and I refuse to be one of those. I will not say I won’t ever accept it if the circumstances were right….but it has not been right as of yet. Every driver that I work with is very important to me in their own special way. I do not have a favorite driver or group, but the ones I enjoy the most are the ones that are having a good time. Racing is a sport to be enjoyed, and those who are enjoying it are always a pleasure to be around and work with. I can see their smiling eyes behind the helmet. I do the best I can for every racer, and it doesn’t matter how fast or slow, the type of car, etc. It’s about the person in the seat. Whether I know them real well or just met them that day, I treat each and every one the same and give them my best effort. However, I would say I have a favorite race. In the spring of 2018, in Eldridge, Alabama, Kevin Plunkett raced in the $5,000 super pro. Our last pass was at 5:00 AM the next morning, and Kevin took home the win. Previously to this race, Kevin’s dad, Johnny Mack, had passed away, and he is very missed by those that knew him. He would sit on his four-wheeler outside the fence at the burn box, cheering us on in his own quiet way with a slight grin. The morning Kevin won, his presence was felt and I know he was as proud of him as we all were. Having been Kevin’s BUG for a long time, I’ve seen his struggles in racing so he needed and deserved that win…..which made it very special to all of us. That morning, on the way home, the sunrise was a little brighter than usual, and I’m sure Kevin’s dad had a little something to do with that. Of course I’ve had many, many embarrassing moments. Being colorblind and seeing very few colors, I have to make adjustments for knowing when my cars come up. If there are two of the same cars in a race, I will memorize the car name, car number, or something unique on the car. However, I have mistakenly got out with the wrong cars before. Thankfully they just went with it, but I was really embarrassed when I was pulling them to the line and didn’t recognize their faces. The wardrobe malfunctions are sometimes the worse. I’ve had so many I’ve learned to just laugh it off and go on. My daughter has given me one rule concerning these malfunctions….”Momma, just make sure you have pretty panties on just in case”. My outfits are typically only worn once, but I may change that soon. For now, though, they are cleaned after a race and stored for my daughter to keep. Sometimes I will give them away to other BUGs, but it’s usually the ones that I’ve bought and haven’t worn yet. I have had many struggles during the past few years. I’ve BUG’d with a broken arm, broken foot (multiple times), broke toes, broken ribs, double pneumonia, etc. However, I have only canceled one and that is when, as previously mentioned, my father

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

passed away. I kept it very quiet as far as the public and social media was concerned. I keep social media very positive as a general rule, and I know that by making something negative that happened in my life could affect many others. It is very easy to take a negative and make others feel what you are feeling…..however, it is not necessary. And, after all, I had a lot of folks reaching out and saying “happy birthday” simply because they wanted to……why tarnish their effort? Instead, I kept it quiet and just used each person reaching out as a sort of “bandaid” for what was going on in my personal life, even though no one knew. The only goal I have had being a BUG was to do a backup the entire length of the track in honor of our veterans, which I have done. I do have some wishes, though. I wish the NHRA would create a hard card just for BUGs. I also wish that every single BUG would wear a crown when she BUGs (drivers….buy your BUG a crown if they don’t have one! If they won’t, contact me….I

will). This leads me to the story of my crown….the only one I have. It has been in a showcase for several years now, and I have never even had it on my head until I had a picture made with it. When I started to BUG, my daughter bought me the crown and told me that as long as I did what was right, stood up for what I believed in, stayed true to myself, etc., then I would always be her Queen. I made her a promise that if I ever put the crown on for any reason, I would wear it to a few races for her. So, I will keep that promise this year. When you see that crown in person, or in pictures, remember that it represents the love that comes from kids, the good they see in us, and how it is ok to be your own individual. And who is Sugar Bug? She is naughty when she can be, mean when she has to be, and nice because she wants to be. One of these days when my eyes close forever, I will go BUG for the big race in the sky. Hopefully it will have a beautiful ocean on one side of the track and the mountains on the other side. But when I peek back to see what I left behind, I want to see everyone having a good time, smiling, laughing, and burning as much rubber as possible! I hope you’ll say, “She lived. She really, really LIVED!” And for those that will get a few ashes to ride with you….I’ll be watching over you. And when you get to the line, smile…..I’ll be there waiting. Sugar Scoop: I am a veteran & have a PhD in Psychology.

Dear Friends: We would like to invite you to our 41st annual R.O.D.S. Run in Baton Rouge, Louisiana - February 22-24, 2019. This pre-1949 streetrod show has been a fixture in the rodding community since the 1970’s, and we hope you can help us keep it going a few more years! We need more registrants! The host hotel for 2019 will be the Hampton Hotel on Reiger Rd., just off I-10 at the Seigen Lane exit and the show site is right next door at Gerry Lane Cadillac. It is within walking distance but we have golf carts to ferry you back and forth. Food and drink will be available on the grounds, plus there are more than 20 great restaurants within ¼ mile of the hotel! Join us Friday and grab a good parking spot, register for your dash plaque, window sticker, goody bag and maybe pick up some door prizes. Then enjoy a free supper courtesy of Gerry Lane Cadillac. We are again expecting a big contingent from the Vintage Street Rod Assn., and those guys drive down here from all over the country! Saturday is the “show and shine” which will include automotive and craft vendors, a free shuttle to the Mall of Louisiana for the ladies and a ‘free’ Swap Meet in the parking lot! Bring any car parts you don’t need and we will even have club members watch your stuff for you. Can’t beat that! Sunday we will have a devotional service in the morning by the Teal’s, followed by the awards and cash prize drawings totaling over $500.00! And the odds of you winning are pretty darn good. We also raise money for Hospice of Baton Rouge each year, a nonprofit hospice foundation – and we look forward to seeing you in February! Sincerely, Lee Laurent ….. A 1957 Chevy Belair two door hardtop. This is a beautiful example of the quintessential 1950s classic! This is the car that most people associate with the 1950s, and this one is an excellent example of that American classic. The Matador red paint is in excellent condition, with nary a chip or scratch. The chrome appears to have been redone, and the Bright work is nearly flawless. Inside, the seats are hounds-tooth deluxe with inlay and are in great shape there are no signs of wear or sagging, the carpet and headliner look new. It is powered by a 283 power PAC engine, larger valve springs, a four barrel carburetor from the factory, and a 3speed column mounted standard transmission. This car is as good mechanically as it is goodlooking. It runs and drives as it did back in 1957. It is equipped with dual rear antennas, dual mirrors, and fender skirts with rockguards! It has a 12 volt electrical system with deluxe bumpers. This car looks like it is ready to head down to the corner soda shop for a chocolate frappe!!
