Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine Don’t surround yourself with people that feed your dysfunction. As long as you accept dysfunction as the norm, you give it permission to stay. If you’re depressed, don’t go find depressed friends. Don’t get around people that enable your dysfunction. Get around some happy people. Get around people that lift your spirit. Get ready; God’s about to surprise you. He’s already spoken to the right people. He’s already lined up the healing, the freedom, the promotion. It’s going to happen suddenly; you didn’t see it coming. You woke up expecting more of the same. You never dreamed you would be free, healed, promoted, vindicated. You are just one good break away. The good news is, it could happen today, it could happen this week. Your whole world could change for the better this month. Why don’t you pitch your tent in the land of hope? That’s not just being positive, that’s your faith being released. “God will not allow things to happen that won’t somehow move you to your destiny.” … Joel Osteen

Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo it’s hot! at least here .. this was explained to me the other day after I muttered under my breath, "I don't know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time." I got my answer pretty darn quick and it wasn’t under her breath, "Allow me to explain! God made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me; God made me stupid so I would be attracted to you! See we were driving down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of us wanted to concede our position. As we passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, I asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?" "Yep," "in-laws." The year is 2024 and the United States has just elected the first woman, a Louisiana State University graduate, as President of the United States, Susan Boudreaux. A few days after the election the president-elect calls her father and says, ‘So, Dad, I assume you will be coming to my inauguration?’ ‘I don’t think so. It’s a 30 hour drive, your mother isn’t as young as she used to be, and my arthritis is acting up again.’ ‘Don’t worry

Jimbo, Our new pastor was visiting the homes of his parishioners. At our house I guess it was obvious that someone was at home, but I didn’t answer to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote 'Revelation 3:20' on the back of it and stuck it in our door. I was told when the offering was processed at the next worship service, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, 'Genesis 3:10' Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter. Revelation 3:20 begins 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock.' Genesis 3:10 reads, 'I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.' gail2@ Jimbo, A cowboy, who just moved to Mississippi from Texas, walks into a bar and orders three mugs of Bud. He sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more. The bartender approaches and tells the cowboy, "You know, a mug goes flat after I draw it. It would taste better if you bought one at a time." The cowboy replies, "Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in Arizona, the other is in Colorado. When we all left our home in Texas, we promised that we'd drink this way to remember the days when we drank together. So I'm drinking one beer for each of my brothers and one for myself." The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there. The cowboy becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way. He orders three mugs and drinks them in turn. One day, he comes in and only orders two mugs. All the regulars take notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, "I don't want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your loss." The cowboy looks quite puzzled for a moment, then a light dawns in his eyes and he laughs. "Oh, no, everybody's just fine," he explains. "It's just that my wife and I joined the Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking." “It hasn't affected my brothers though." Rusty

Jimbo, Recently there was a Mensa convention in San Francisco. Mensa, as you probably know, is a national organization for people who have an IQ of 150 or higher. Several of the Mensa members went out for lunch at a local café. When they sat down one of them discovered that their salt shaker contained pepper and their pepper shaker was full of salt. How could they swap the contents of the two bottles without spilling any and using only the implements at hand? Clearly, this was a job for Mensa minds. The group debated the problem and presented ideas and finally came up with a brilliant solution involving a napkin, a straw, and an empty saucer. They called the blonde waitress over ready to dazzle her with their solution. "Ma'am," they said, "we couldn't help but notice that the pepper shaker contains salt and the salt shaker has pepper.” But before they could finish, the waitress interrupted: " Oh, sorry about that." She leaned over the table, unscrewed the caps of both bottles and switched them. There was dead silence at the Mensa table. Kind of reminds you of the past 100 years in Washington D.C., doesn't it? giff1500@ Jimbo, Boudreaux and Marie had been married for several years, and like a lot of couples, had some rough times. They decided to go to a marriage counselor to try and work things out. When they arrived, the counselor jumped right in. "What seems to be the problem?" he asked. Immediately, Marie started to relate all the bad habits Boudreaux has, what a bum he was, and everything else that was wrong with him. Poor Boudreaux couldn't get a word in. After a few minutes of listening to Marie's ranting, the counselor stood up, walked over to Marie, picked her up, and kissed her passionately, then sat her back down. Marie just sat there, speechless . . . with a very satisfied look on her face. Boudreaux just looked at her with disbelief on his face. The counselor tells Boudreaux, "That's the problem. Your wife NEEDS to have that at least twice a week." Boudreaux tells him, "Mais OK, whatever you tink. I'll get her here every Tuesday and Thursday!" The Easy Cajun Till next month ……

Mickey Thompson's Mini Dragster has been honored with a tribute build! (Info & photos from justacarguy.blogspot.com) It was built by Dave Miller Concepts in Anaheim, for Casey the owner, who had the idea and design outline and uses a $99.00 dollar harbor freight “predator” 6 horsepower engine with a mukuni 23mm motorcycle carb that will function correctly while it wheelies. Casey brought the engine, rear axle, tires/wheels, and steering wheel. The rest was fabbed, evolved, and figured out. It uses a CVT style torque converter which continues to shift during the wheelie which means you start the wheelie at 2 mph and finish at 40 mph after traveling at least 300 feet on the back wheels. Throttle is on the steering wheel with left and right brake pedals ( it has a differential) so you can “steer” during the wheelstand. (There is a spring loaded castor welded to the back of the seat that keeps you right at the balance point.). Rear tires are off a Cessna airplane, front tires from a mobility scooter. Frame was constructed as close as possible to Mickey Thompson’s original. We shortened the wheelbase 10 inches so that it would fit into the back of my truck. Ha! We took it to the 70th reunion of hot rod magazine’s two days of drag racing at Pomona Fairgrounds and it was a fun pit vehicle.

Could this be a new class at the dragstrip? Senior JR Dragsters… they fit in the back of a pick-up truck and are cheaper to build. Looks like a lot of fun.. anyway

We're building the rear kick ups on the frame rails, and aiming at the rear axle and suspension. Front axle and suspension are close to done. Motor is done. Trans is being rebuilt. The little guy with the black shirt (11yrs old) makes knives. Has a forge and is teaching himself the trade. Has been coming to the build wanting to learn to weld! We've been letting him squeeze the trigger while we steer the welding wire.

RUMBLE CRATE ENGINE By Beth Rayann Corder | Ron Corder Customs A good engine is the heart of a good hot rod. And, there are many options to choose from, such as, a restored, modified, custom built, or crate engine. It gets pretty exciting around a shop when a hot rod builder has the opportunity to install a brand-new, straight-out-of- the-box, sho-nuff, readyto-go, crate motor. But, no matter what type of engine is used, it's a simple fact, without an engine, a hot rod can't rumble and, if a hot rod can't rumble, it can't roll. An engine doesn't have to rumble loud or purr perfect. (Although, in my opinion, that is the preferred option.) It does have to run right or the hot rod is staying in the garage. When an engine refuses to start, it usually requires some late shop nights using tools, talents, and sweat-inducing tweaking to get the rod back on the road. But, it really is worth it. It's pitiful to see a grown man cry when his cruising is stopped and his hot rod has to be stored. Bad engines can make for a bummer of a hobby day. You know, we don't really run very well with bad hearts either. Just like an engine, our hearts require regular maintenance too. If our hearts are in poor shape, physically or spiritually, they don't hum as peacefully as they could, which is often because they are stressed beyond their abilities, are neglected or have been mistreated through the years. Sometimes our hearts and engines just need a little special attention to keep them running at their best. The Rumble at the Camp hot rod crew recently fired up a 350 crate engine for the 1923 T-Bucket that will be given away at their October 5th cruise event. 3 Oaks Farm Repair and Restoration and Vintage At 3 Oaks in Perkinston, MS, generously donated the engine and added a few features to spice it up and provide plenty of spunk for this cool, little Tbucket. It rumbles with a Comp Cam inside and Quick fuel on top. The only thing between them is an RPM Edelbrock intake with an HEI distributor to set everything on fire. Next step‌installation. Be sure and follow us on the Rumble at the Camp Facebook page or contact us at Campground Baptist Church, if we can help you find solutions to keep your heart running smoothly so you can enjoy your cruise on the road God has given you to travel. Keep them rolling and rumbling.

11 years. ( we cant believe it either...)

My excitement level is building, let me explain. Each year the NSRA puts on an awesome event called the Street Rod Nationals. I had the good fortune to attend many, starting with the 25th edition. It was a huge happening, over 14,000, pre 1948 hotrods of all shapes and colors were in attendance at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center, in Louisville. Those attendance numbers were, at the time, a record, and since has not been topped. This year will mark the 50th Anniversary of the Nationals, and the Queen and I have plans to be there. And it all takes place August 1st through the 4th. Since it is the 50th edition, I am expecting this to be the largest attendance yet, and hopefully set a new record. And lucky me I get to be a part of it. To my surprise the Queen bought me a cool t -shirt, and unbeknownst to me, also booked us a hotel walking distance to the fairgrounds, and presented me with that at Christmas last year. The T-shirt says it boldly, I am cruising to the 50th Street Rod Nationals. What a wonderful gift. Last year she enjoyed the ladies she met and got to hang out with, while a group of us Misfits spouses walked around admiring the talented builders, and checking out all of the vendor displays in the huge building. Did I mention we had a Large time in doing this? It really was great for me that the Queen finally enjoyed herself with some like minded ladies that came with their car crazy other halves. She had endured several of these trips in the past, and I do mean endured. However, she had a good time last year, so much so she is looking forward to this one. At the Street Rod Nationals there are hundreds of parts/supplies vendors indoors, a very large swap- meet outdoors, a Ladies world for the not so auto related items, a large food and drink court, did I mention hundreds of vendors selling all types of hotrod parts and the latest we just have to have items. Acres and acres of cars and trucks outside, and if you are lucky enough to catch a tram you can ride around the fairgrounds and not have to walk. It really is a huge venue, with enough parts, and supplies to build a complete car or truck right on site. There is also a repair facility on the grounds for those that have problems during their travels and all the tools one would need in most cases to repair the faulty condition. And lots of technical help. The buildings where all of this happens in are huge, and air-conditioned, and kept very clean throughout this 4-day event. Inside some of the premier builders are invited to display some of their latest creations, there are seminars to attend to learn various car building skills, there is also a show within the gathering called the Pros Pick. There really is a lot to see and do. There are also a few nights entertainment in an arena and on Sunday morning a Church Service. After each many folks gather at the parking lots of the hotels and watch the creations leave the fairgrounds, it is a celebration of all things automotive. Its really a time to get off of your feet and rest them from an entire day of walking, chill out and relax and prepare for the next day of gearhead bliss. Well Its time for me to pack up the Queens chariot with a few tools and supplies and give it a good once over in preparations for the trip. Maybe next year Chase, Bryce, and I can take the Big Truck, since its not ready this year. I look forward to sharing several pictures, stories, and experiences from this journey as well., Until next month from the Carriage House‌ Gizmo.

By: Joyce Lachaussee The first storm of the 2019 season decided to make its debut the same weekend as the Hardee's Breakfast Cruise In. It didn't stop some diehard enthusiast from showing up. Although the crowd was small, it still was an enjoyable morning, especially for this group of guys - Bill Cramer resides in Atlanta, Kenneth Flint in Gautier, George Cottrell from Houston, Robin Dyer from Louisiana and Mike Lachaussee, a local. These guys made the effort to come to the cruise in and reunite as former classmates from the Pascagoula graduating class of '65. They enjoyed the cars and even more, swapping tales from their "glory" days. We hope this won't be their last visit with us. A newcomer that is local, Andy Hillman, brought his '76 Camaro. Andy recently purchased this car from the previous Vancleave owner. It's fully loaded - power steering, power disc brakes, air and a new drive train. It has a 355 to add to the package. Andy operates large cranes on off site construction and hasn't been able to come because of his work. Unfortunately, Andy recently suffered a stroke and is on medical leave. We wish Andy a speedy recovery and many years of enjoyment cruising in his Camaro. Hopefully you can return in good health.

As you can see from the photos, the weather turned nice. You just never know in south Mississippi what to expect! Come join us, rain or shine each second Friday of the month at Hardee's in Lucedale from 7:30 til the last car story has been told. This breakfast is open to all. We are not a car club, have no meetings, no dues and no work! You don't even have to have a vehicle to participate. So come cruise in with us for some great fun, breakfast and coffee.

We regret the recent loss of our fellow hot rodder and car buff, Al Holloman of Alabama. We want to express our sympathy to Al's family and let them know he will be missed by the Hardee's Breakfast gang.

This June, Floyd and I decided to do something we haven’t done in 30 years – we took a trip out West! We timed it so we could attend the 35th Annual Rocky Mountain Street Rod Nationals in Pueblo, Colorado, and we weren’t disappointed. The weather was amazing and show was exceptional – I don’t think I’ve ever been to a show that had so much to do. Registration started on Thursday and there was a cookout that night for all registered guests. The rest of the weekend was filled with lots of cars and fun, with a total of 2035 registered vehicles. The ladies tea was held on Friday and there were plenty of delicious desserts & fruit and there were enough prizes for every gal there to receive one! The “Panel Jam” took place throughout the weekend and there were artists from all over the West doing pinstriping. Each artist created a little masterpiece of their own design on signs, ice chests, bikes, gas tanks and all sorts of different things. Then every couple of hours, show leaders would auction off pieces of the art work. Visitors could watch the artists while they were working and stick around to buy what they liked, which was great.

At each show, NSRA Representatives select a pre-’48 or a post’49 vehicle of their choice to be added to the Circle of Winners. I picked a ‘48 Reo 2-ton truck owned by Eddie from Clyde, TX. Eddie built the truck over the course of 3 years and it was a custom, and very tastefully done.

This show was definitely family-friendly. There were 50 or more pedal cars on display, an antique tractor display with both nicely restored and original tractors, and 15+ Old School Slingshots on display to admire. There was a pin-up contest that featured lots of lovely ladies AND children all dressed alike. There was a 30-foot track with an electric finish for valve cover racing. And there was even a ‘Cacklefest’ where they started all the dragsters at one time…that ROAR sure was exciting!! Both kids and adults really enjoyed all of it.

Floyd and I spent the week before the show in the mountains trying to see everything there was to see. We went to the Royal Gorge in Canon City and rode the train through the beautiful mountain scenery and along the Arkansas River. Also, because I’ve always wanted to ride in a helicopter, we did! All I can say about that was it was truly an awesome experience. And we loved visiting Pikes Peak, where it had SNOWED the day before. (That’s right SNOWED in JUNE!) The snow was 12 feet deep on the top of the mountains. We sure got our eyes full and brought home plenty of great memories. Until next time… thanks, Donna

This time of the summer the Heat slows a lot of the events up but there's still a lot to do each month. First stop was Dairy Queen in Slidell for their Cruise in, nice smaller cruise in with people enjoying themselves and each other.

My next big event is one of my top 3 of everything I do its called Scrapin’ the Coast. With around 2000 cars/trucks. It's just a lot more variety of rides from rat rods, Hot rods, Muscle cars, Lowriders, 4x4's, VW's, bikes, imports and most anything inbetween. You see a lot of younger families having fun at this one. If you've never been give it a try.

Our next stop was Long Beach Harbor cruise in. Had about 25 cars at this one hanging out. The next weekend was the VFW Show in Bay Saint Louis. They had 60+ cars at this one. Had a nice group of 12 cars/trucks of young men/ladies and their families come over to support the event. I've met them at a few events and they do a lot as a club.. Their club is called Those Who Serve.

We also made our regular Silver Slipper Casino weekly car bike and jeep nights.

On the 1st. Friday we headed to Jeff Ave for the finally Friday cruise-in on Jeff Davis Ave. This one usually has around 100 cars/ trucks cruising, eating, enjoying music and telling stories.

Finished out the day at Edgewater Mall with the Coast Cruizers and 80+ cars/trucks at their Cruise-in.

Another fun month of running 12/16 cruise-in’s and 4/8 shows supporting our neighboring friends and families. Just cruise and remember to watch for our friends out riding their bikes also. Allen Early the next morning we made it to Beauvoir for their 2nd annual car show around 240 cars/trucks at this one. Just about everyone got to park under a nice shady Oak Tree and with the Gulf breeze the day didn't seen as hot. This was as nice show and the location was very nice.

PS from Cole's Corner, Just a few pictures of another family with cars/bikes in their blood. Gary sr.,Gary jr, and Trenton. Sat at the Atomic Blast and watched young Trenton push a three wheeled broken go cart into the tent by us. We'll when dad and Granddad build trucks it's only natural for him. He dismantled the cart before the show was done. Mom even made room to get it all home.

We kept getting updates and a few weeks later and he was cruising on it. Gotta love the family that supports the kids.

Wow, this is my number 100th column, that’s 8 years and about 3 months of writing. I never, ever, even thought about reaching this milestone. Even now I can’t wrap my head around it. In ways it seems like a very long time ago I started and in ways it seems like I just started the process yesterday. As I am writing this column on Saturday morning…the Tropical Storm, Barry, is getting ready to make landfall west of New Orleans. Regardless of what plans you make for a weekend, a tropical storm can bring it all to an abrupt stop. A lot has happened to me over the last 8 years…some good and some bad. None of us can totally control our lives. We think we can control it but it’s only an illusion. We all have to take life as it comes and make the very best of it that we can. As many of you know I announced stock cars on the weekend for 30 years before retiring in 2005. During those 30 years I announced at 18 race tracks in the Southeast, including one track in the midwest. I was fortunate enough to announce two seasons at Talladega Super Speedway with NASCAR.

facility is beautiful and the track is long, with tall banking in the corners and like he said it is wicked fast. But I still wasn’t convinced, but I told Wyatt I would give it some serious thought. It surprised me how seriously I did think about it. I mean when I stopped announcing in 2005, I did not go to a single race until 2018, when I helped an old race friend run ARCA at Daytona. Not one time did I go to a race or a track; I thought it was out of my system. So I agreed to help a friend out…. to announce again, to help get the track going this season, no promises past this year. We run every other Saturday night and so far I have really enjoyed it.

I even went through about $25,000 in cash racing two seasons on asphalt at Montgomery International Raceway driving a Street Stock Camaro. We had two announcers at Montgomery. I would announce the previous race, my crew would have my car rolled into position on pit road, I would run down with my fire suit on, race the race, give it back to my crew at the end of the race and run back to the tower to announce the next race. I mainly wanted to know what it felt like in the car during a race to help me with announcing. I also got to attend three racing schools with the Buck Baker Racing School and drive in a real NASCAR Cup car. All three times I got to drive one of Dale Earnhardt JR’s retired number 8 Cup cars, I drove Atlanta, Bristol and Darlington. Darlington was the most fun! I also did two NASCAR talk shows on the radio over a period of about 5 years, first at 870 AM WWL in New Orleans and then at 95.3 FM, on the MS Coast. I finished my stock car race announcing career; at least I thought I did, with the 2005 SNOWBALL Derby at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, 2005 was also my last season to also do the NASCAR talk show. Thirteen and a half years later a guy that I worked with at five different tracks called me, he was now a race track promoter and asked me to come announce for him. I told him I wasn’t the least bit interested and I really wasn’t. I have enjoyed having my weekends back. Well Wyatt Gibson would not take no for an answer. He said you have to come see the track, it’s a high bank 4/10’s mile track that is wicked fast. So I did, Deep South Speedway in Loxley, AL; the

My new Monday through Friday job is going well too, my brain has been totally consumed with learning the new job. My days are twelve hours long with the commute from my brother’s place in Perdido Bay, FL to Mobile, AL and back. Some days I go to bed as soon as I get home and eat. But it’s all good. I’m getting into the groove, learning my way around Mobile as I do sales calls. I love the company I work for, COX Media and the employees I work with on a daily basis. One of the toughest parts about moving to a new city and state is giving up all your friends and contacts. If you need to get something taken care of, you know right where to go. Moving to a new place means reestablishing all those contacts. Some will be worth driving back to the MS Gulf Coast for. I’m keeping the Hot Rod Show trailer stored on the MS Coast, plus 90% of my household goods are stored there at least until I find the place I want to live in East Mobile. I am working toward my goal of a 34 Ford and the memories it will create! But I may need buy a new Ford F-150 first; we’ll see how it goes.

On a sad note…I had to put my dog down this week, my late wife Scotty’s dog, Maxie. Kidney failure, she was only 8. Very tough to do, she was my companion and my buddy. Scotty and Maxie are back together again. My next car show on the schedule will be “View The Cruise” the Official Kickoff to Cruisin The Coast in downtown Gulfport, MS Sunday October 6, 2019. Can you believe Cruisin The Coast is only two months away? Column number 100, wow it’s been an incredible ride and learning experience for me. I have met some incredible folks, seen and performed at some incredible car shows and looked at some awesome cars. If you had told me I would write one column years ago I would have laughed and said never. Thanks for coming long with me on this incredible ride, I can’t promise another 100 columns, but I plan to write one next month and that’s how I got to 100, just one at a time. I may not look 17 anymore, but I promise I was once 17 and I try to stay there mentally because it was so much fun, an incredible time in my life and in the world, enjoy the ride…enjoy your special ride! til next month…

Welcome Back to your monthly dose of my OVERSPRAY How-To article on kustom painting and flare!! This is my 9th article dealing with the craft and I thought I would do a simple article on basics and give some tips to starting artist's and more advanced artist’s. To start I have 3 pictures on the bottom of 2 different airbrushes broken down in true form. You can clearly see that they look the same at first. When you break them down slowly you start to see that they are STILL the same. I get a lot of questions involving “What tools do you use??” . Well to keep it honest I just simply use what I am used to and so should you. The 2 airbrushes are a big $150.00 difference and still do the same thing. I use an airbrush that can handle solvent base material so it cost a little more when the average illustrator can use a cheapo because they are spraying water based products. All and all, it is simply about what you feel best using so don’t get sucked into the brand name hype. The great masters from our past used eggs as paint base and the chicken didn’t matter in quality. Keep it simple. When starting out as a kustom painter you just have to experiment. Try different styles on random projects and you will eventually start returning to your favorite and grow from there in that field. I myself never wanted to be the “t-shirt guy” so I kept at it. I mean being on a beach is all fun and all but it just wasn’t what drove me. I used to be a graffiti artist so I naturally loved big pieces so in turn I love murals. I love cars as any red-blooded man should so I wanted to paint on them. You have many passions that give you pleasure as well and being an artist you will gravitate towards what your inner child is. The biggest battle of any project is by far the research involved. Research is very important. I may be doing other things like working and eating but in the back of my mind I’m

18

AUGUST 2019

putting together this puzzle of steps to take to defeat the project. It might take me a few weeks of personal thought just to know when I’m even ready to take on a task. Your painting skills are just techniques that are easily carried out as long as you have a plan. Planning is the key to any project so don’t just be wild with it because it is someone else's dream you are creating. On another note I would say not to be too direct with deadlines. Kustom takes time and the customer should know that if you were lucky enough for them to choose you as their artist. I personally have a few jobs running at the same time as well as a full-time job at Precision Paint and Body but every day I am still planning the next step in a future project. You have to use your time wisely as an artist. Like I said before, half the battle is mental. I can sit here and tell you all the secrets but all and all you really have to find out what works best for you as an artist. I will say this; You have to stay with the times and definitely become more digital savvy. Social media is a great platform that is easily free to use and get your stuff out there. We like free right? Overhead is the key to starting out. You literally want no overhead at all times but sometimes you can’t avoid it like getting a flat tire on your car. You just have to spend when you have to. When you bid a job always charge for materials even if it’s for a friend. Time is definitely money and after forking out a few free jobs that cost you 60 hours of your life that you can never get back you will understand it just makes sense to cover costs no matter the move you are making. In the next couple pages I decided to put a few projects I have completed in the past to show you what years of dedication can accomplish if you don’t give up. Painting is hard and only the strong will survive.—- JOHN

Don’t ever forget that it is always “who” you know more than “what” you know sometimes. You have lived a long life and have met a lot of people who can become valuable resources who can help push you on a greater scale. Molly Moonstone By Candy Cocktail As you may already know from previous articles, I have a special love of pinup artwork, from new to old. I love the curvy models and colorful kitschiness that impresses and sometimes even inspires me. Some time ago, while doing my somewhat frequent browsing of pinup art on Instagram, I came across Molly Moonstone. A raven haired firecracker and burlesque star, Molly Moonstone not only looks beautiful, but creates gorgeous pinup artwork. She is a multi-faceted talent; burlesque performer, singer, curvy model and artist, creating scenes of voluptuous mermaids, swinging 60s parties that I wish I could join, sultry bunnies, custom work and my personal favorite, pink haired pinups with flamingos. Molly Moonstone was born in Hyvink채채, Finland, the land of snow, saunas and the northern lights. However there is nothing cold about Molly's art. She has worked for the last 17 years producing warm and playful lowbrow art paintings, with themes ranging from vintage and retro, to pinup and burlesque. She is best known for her lovely ladies that celebrate the female form. Molly has always been fascinated by female bodies, mid century style, rockabilly culture, American culture, vintage cartoons and Disney. These interests were cultivated during her teenage years and developed after high school. During the last nine years Molly has broadened her work and exhibited it at Tiketti Galleria, at Kamiter Arts and at the Croatia Burlesque Festival.

She has sold her work to discerning customers across the world. She has developed a strong reputation in the burlesque world in which her artistic expression is also realized by performing herself. Additionally, she has a growing following in the vintage/retro scene, often referred to as 'kustom culture'.

Molly studied at an art school for kids and teenagers in her hometown of Hyvink채채 when she was a child. She subsequently studied at an art high school in Helsinki. Other than the brief time at the two art schools she studied at, she is self taught. Molly currently lives partially in Helsinki where she paints and travels frequently to perform at burlesque events around the world. Molly credits music as her biggest inspiration, stating that it always has been. Molly enjoys different kinds of music; rockabilly, edm, hard rock, dance music, pop music, etc. The burlesque star likes to walk or workout at the gym with her headphones on and listening to music, which is usually how she gets her ideas for her paintings or burlesque acts.

Yet a funny fact is that she cannot listen to the music that inspires her while she paints because she finds herself getting so into the music that her mind starts to wander and she is unable to concentrate on the painting. Instead she prefers to have horror movies playing in the background while she is painting. As she added, “For some reason they calm me down, haha.” Molly considers her style like that of vintage cartoons; Very colorful and there is always a scene going on in her paintings, which leaves it up to the viewer how he or she sees it and comes up with the story behind the scene. And as she adds, “Oh yes, curvy women, boobs, I am sure known for those in my art! I often hear people saying, 'You´re the tit artist!' I guess for some people my art is super erotic or sexual or even naughty. How I see it is that I just like to paint women with curves and sometimes they might even be naked. It´s not that serious. But I think above all my art is fun!” Molly Moonstone has a number of exciting things coming up in the future! The burlesque star and artist will have her first art exhibition in LA, hopefully during this year! She will share more about that on her social media when she has the details so make sure to follow her there. She also has some super cool collaborations coming up in the US, but says since she is a bit superstitious in that sense, she understandably does not want to tell too much in advance. She adds, “I guess we Finns are careful like that. But there are great things happening!” Be sure to follow the links below to see more of Molly Moonstone & her artwork! https://www.facebook.com/Miss-Molly-Moonstone-Art-143624099028665/ https://www.instagram.com/molly_moonstone_art/?hl=en https://www.instagram.com/molly_moonstone/ https://www.facebook.com/molly.moonstone.band/

When It Rains And Rains And Rains! My friends and I headed out to the Street Machine Nationals in Du Quoin, Illinois on June 21, with fun on our minds and not a worry in the world. The sun was shining making the trip even more pleasant. The canopy was staked out and the chairs placed beneath it. We got the registration completed at the show before the rain storm hit. By the time we got to the hotel it was dropping water by the bucketful, the wind picked up and the rain began pelting the building with gusto. The wind was blowing so hard the raindrops sounded like hail as it hammered at the windows. We had accomplished our tasks for the day so we unpacked our clothes and went down for dinner. Once we started our conversation at the dinner table, everything was alright. The joking and laughter took the rain right out of our heads. It is interesting how good friends can do that. Saturday’s weather forecast was for more rain, and it was cloudy when we left the hotel, but we were optimistic and hopeful that it would not rain the entire day. By the time we had driven to the fairgrounds, it was beginning to look promising. When we arrived at our aforementioned site where we planned to spend our days, the canopy was gone. GONE. As in nowhere in sight. The entire grassy area was flooded. Water was so deep it poured over the tops of our shoes. We drug out the chairs and miscellaneous items and moved them to the pavement. The cars were parked on the pavement in an area not exactly for their use, but concessions were made. Someone located the canopy. It had been reduced to a twisted mass and was having an affair with a fence. There were a lot of brilliant body repair people there, but the canopy was considered a “total loss. I sensed there was concern among the group that this was going to be an unpleasant weekend. The rain that had been forecast arrived shortly after we did. It rained, and the wind blew, and it rained some more. There were metal shelters with picnic tables designed for eating the wonderful food prepared by the vendors, but they quickly flooded and became roofs over small lakes. The picnic tables were soaking wet. The tent to purchase Event t-shirts (the first place I want to go when I arrive at an event) was as an island surrounded by a sea of water. I had to wade across a stream at least 10 feet wide to enter. (It was worth the effort). I have at least 10 cheap plastic ponchos for events where rain rears its ugly head, strategically placed in various places for convenience. Unfortunately, I had none with me that weekend, nor an umbrella, so I purchased yet another thin poncho at the Event t-shirt tent. Yes, this is precisely how I accumulated my other ten, by forgetting to pack them for an event. With the poncho purchased, I was sure I would be able to enjoy the show rain or shine. I was overly optimistic. Here is something that caught my attention. As miserable as the weather was, raining on expensive show cars with expensive blown engines, the entrants were surprisingly upbeat and pleasant. I struck up conversations with several persons I had never met before. Only a short amount of time elapsed before we were telling stories and laughing as though we were long term buddies. We were from different parts of the United States, on a terrible rainy and windy day, yet we were able to be happy. Car guys and gals are like that. I am not telling you anything new, I am just questioning how that occurs. We seem to be amazingly resilient. When the rain ceased, everyone was going to need to clean and polish their cars, perhaps remove water from their interior, and get their show cars prepared for the judging that was going to occur. This was going to need to be completed in a rush. I did not notice anyone who was upset about this. With my mind determined to find an answer for this, I consulted the internet. Here is what I learned:

Friendship occurs when persons come together that have mutual trust, concern and compassion. Friendship occurs among people with shared interests, opinions, beliefs, or hobbies. Interesting! Good friends are good for your health. Friends can help you celebrate good times and provide support during bad times. Friendship prevents loneliness and gives you an opportunity to offer needed companionship. Friends: Increase your sense of belonging and purpose. Boost your happiness and reduce your stress. Improve your self-confidence and selfworth. Adults with strong social support have a reduced risk of many significant health problems, including depression, high blood pressure and an unhealthy body mass. Studies have concluded that older adults with a rich social life are likely to live longer than their peers with fewer connections. Hmmm!!! It appears that our hobby has the solution to a long, happy, and healthy life built right into it. I conclude this to mean your true gift is in your head, your heart and in your soul. See you on the road.

July 13, 2019 By: ChandaElaine Summer is upon us! With the heat and sunshine come car shows and with car shows comes….silliness. So, this month, here are a few pointers for WHAT TO DO and WHAT NOT TO DO at your next car show. WHAT TO DO: 1.) Bring the whole family. A first car show can be a formative experience - - it’ s how future car buffs are made! Shows are safe, fun environments which where everyone is welcome (Fido, too!) 2.) Take tons of photographs. 3.) Make new friends. Get out there! Everyone is there for the same reason. You never know who you might meet! Ask other owners about their cars, talk shop, and find out where the next show is. Come one, you know you want to. 4.) Check out the local businesses. The world’s greatest BBQ restaurant could be just down the block, but you’ll never know if you don’t go look. 5.) Bring supplies! For the summer make sure you have plenty of water and sunscreen. For the spring and fall, keep that umbrella handy. In the winter, make sure you are warm. The more comfortable you are, the better time everyone can have!

SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT: Ratrodtober is coming! October 12, 2019 from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM at TUPPS Brewery at 721 Anderson Street in McKinney , Texas. The will be a “Freak out the Squares!” ride in and mini bike races. To register in advance:, go to: www.ratrodtober.com

WHAT NOT TO DO: 1.) “Those are cool knobs!” Yes, and they look cool right where they are. Why not leave them there? 2.) “Awesome burnout!” They’re awesome – at the track. You like going to the car show. The organizers would like to keep having the car show, so better to not get everyone kicked off the property, right? 3.) “My car is way better/more special/more unique/MORE that yours.” Dude, really? Play nice. 4.) “I’ll just take these four parking spaces…” Errr...please don’t be that guy. Please. 5.) “We should do donuts in the parking lot!” Remember how well the burnout went over? Yeah….no. Can’t wait to meet you at the next show! See you there! FOR THOSE WHO MISSED IT: Texoma Cars & Coffee WILL be meeting next month in front of Main Street Motors on Saturday, August 10 at 8:00 AM. Be there or be square!

Car Show Diva By: Jeanie Rupprecht

It doesn’t take much to know that I am an extremely proud Texan, livin’ in an Oklahoma world. So why do you live here? Well, it goes like this… I fell in love with a Yankee man who happened to live and work in Oklahoma…. so I married him. And now you know the sorted truth about WHY I live in Oklahoma. Now, before I go on to some other stuff, I’ll tell you a little more of my story. Late last year, I lost my wonderful husband to cancer. I’ll save you the vicious details, because we all have unpleasantness in our lives. So, my husband spent the last 17 years of his life, workin’ for a company, here in Oklahoma, that manufactures band saws. HE&M Saw, Harris Engineering and Manufacturing, has, for well over 50 years, been the countries leading manufacturer of high speed metal cutting band saws and my hubs was an expert at making them perform. So, I like to say that I’ve been a “HEM-ster” by marriage for over 8 years. When I decided I needed to go back to work, Doug Harris, President/CEO and 2nd generation owner, of HE&M Saw, was kind enough to put me to work. Now, seriously…. I’m tactile and mechanical, but you don’t want me building saws! But Doug had a plan for me, and now I’m the HE&M Saw Social Media coordinator. YES!! I get

I’m just gonna warn ya though, ya might want to pay attention, ‘cause this is a sorta roundabout story of how I got here-here…. on the pages of Gulf Coast Motor Sports Magazine! (BTW, thats kinda how my brain works…. Squirrel!) Here goes! About 10 years ago, Jimbo lost his ever-lovin’ mind, had a crazy spell and start printin’ my random tales of cars, car shows and travel adventures, here in his magazine. And if you’ve read my stuff, you know I’m a Southern Girl with a Southern vocabulary and tons of Southern slang. It’s the way I think, the way I talk and the way I write, well, ya know, for the most part….. minus a few, well placed, expletives. But during my husbands illness, we didn’t get to enjoy goin’ to car shows and travelin’ around as much, so I decided to take a break. That lasted 3-4 years, but I always intending to get back to what I enjoyed and earlier this year, the opportunity presented itself. Remember, I warned you that you might need to pay attention!

to play on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn all day…. and I get paid to do it! How great is that! I’m tellin' you all this because you may have seen my articles in the last 3 GCMS issues, about HE&M Saw’s ‘Project Hudson Hornet’ and Mr. Bill Flint, farmer, rancher, barber, street rodder, builder and saw owner. My day job has given me another opportunity to use my love for writin’ and make it, not only part of my day job, but also my favorite hobby. If you read the recent work, where I’m representin’ HE&M Saw, you’ll notice a slightly more formal style and if you read my past work, AKA full blown Car Show Diva, you’ll see the Southeast Texan in me, who talks and writes with a ‘slight accent’! So this is the plan I’ve put together, and by plan, I mean a very loose outline that, like my live, has many deviations, twist, turns and bumpy roads. Because I live about 20 miles off of Route 66, and Oklahoma has the most drivable miles, and in the past I've written about a few places and events along ‘the Mother Road’, I thought maybe I’d take you on a road trip to see my part of the Route. How ‘bout it? Everyone on board with some Oklahoma and Route 66 Adventures? (I might even slip over into some surrounding states) courtesy of the CarShowDiva and Gulf Coast Motor Sports? And as we travel along, I tell you stories about ‘things’, and you might even hear me repeat this mantra.. “we’re lost, but we’re makin’ good time”!

I know you have witnessed a car fully restored from sitting in a field to becoming a full race car, but have you ever heard ‘The Boogie Man’s’ story? A young man living in South Carolina named Chris Dunn, found a 1963 Chevy Nova rusting in a field. Mr. Dunn raced dirt bikes and off -road type races during his childhood before he ever thought about drag racing. So it is a good thing that he had some type of racing experience before he was thrown into drag racing, but little did he know this type of racing was a whole different type of world. So the beginning of Chris Dunn’s restoration of his car started with getting it out of a field in Pickens, South Carolina. Once he toted it back to a shop, Mr. Dunn chopped the front end off of the Nova. He got lucky because there was already a roll-cage in the car meant for racing, which took some stress off his back on what to do. You see, Chris Dunn never built a race car, and it was never his intention to create a 5 second car, but with the help of Chris Harper and a few other friend’s, the body was created. While building the car, Mr. Dunn put a small block Chevy engine which included four hundred twenty-one cubic inches and a 6-60 Holley carburetor. The transmission he included was a G-force then he put Wilwood front and rear brakes on the Nova. The suspension was put together to be a ladder bar with coil over springs, let's remember Mr. Dunn never previously built a drag car ON HIS OWN, so this was an interesting way to go. When asking Mr. Dunn what kind of exhaust he included in the car, he replied, “ A badass one”. I bet you didn’t know Chris Dunn has a great sense of humor. The rear end is a 9 inch Ford because who can build a race car without using some type of Ford part? Even the best Chevy cars still include a small touch of Ford. The body work and paint was both done by Chris Dunn and Chris Harper. Mr. Dunn was set on painting his Nova green; even though, many people criticized him and didn’t think green was a good color. Not listening to anyone's advice, Chris Dunn followed his heart and with the help of Chris Harper, this paint job was created. Last, the graphics and pinstriping was finished off by Charlie Tyre. So here’s a green fully restored Chevy Nova, now the real question that was being asked was, ‘What are we going to name it?’ Chris Dunn had a conversation with David Gregg, and his friend said, “If you paint that car green, everybody is going to call it “booger man!” Which sparked something in Chris to say, “Well what about the name ‘The Boogie Man’. And at that moment, The Boogie Man was born! Now Chris Dunn had a car ready to race, but did not know how to handle his very fast car. So Chris asked for some help from his friend Mitch Stott, a former championship racer, to teach him how to race his car. One night at a race, Mitch Stott raced ‘The Boogie Man’ and got the car into the finals and won. Chris Dunn took home the recognition of being the new kid on the block with a 5 second car nobody had witnessed before. After that night Chris Dunn raced ‘The Boogie Man’ and took home trophies from races and just created a passion for drag racing. When I asked what his favorite part about racing was, he stated, “The part that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand when the tires spin hard giving off smoke and pushing my car 25+ feet on the track, then my back up girl sets me into the grove.” While the burn out might be the most exhilarating part before the race, it doesn’t feel as awesome than going down a 1/8th, mile track in less than 6 seconds. Now that’s the part that would make the hairs on the back of MY neck stand. Anyway ever since Chris restored his car, one of his hobbies is racing. “It’s just too much fun to give up”, say’s Chris Dunn.

DIRT TRACK REVIVAL By: Chavus Holland Welcome back everyone!!! As most of you should know by now, I am writing these articles each month from my perspective. Just in case you don’t know or realize, let me go over that in a little more detail. As I said in the very beginning, (A year ago) I will do my best to give you all a real life view of what it’s like racing a dirt track open wheel modified in the South. However, this article is about Chase Holland and his journey in the Open wheel modified dirt class. I’m not writing for racetracks and or other drivers… I knew up front that there would be highs and lows. I’ve been around some sort of racing/motorsports all of my life, just like most of you! I could only assume that I would hurt feelings and step on toes at times...but I felt like as long as I was honest and told our story from my angle, then I would be able to live with those consequences. When this opportunity first arose, I really thought long and hard before I agreed to write this monthly article. This is not a paid gig and my opinions and perspective in my articles are just that...MY OPINION from MY PERSPECTIVE. Who am I to this racing team??? I am a race fan/crew chief/car owner/coach/counselor/ spiritual-leader/pit-crew/cameraman/ATM/Machine/fabricator/ mechanic/collision repair specialist/social media manager/ bodyguard (in no particular order) and DADDY to my 15 year old son who loves racing! When I accepted this opportunity, I realized that I would be putting our private lives out in public view, and that would open us up for all kinds of scrutiny from people who don’t know our true character. Knowing all this, I felt like I was still ready to proceed. It’s been fun! I know not everyone agrees with what I am writing. I realize we have some folks that follow very closely (either here and/or on our facebook page) just to critique what I say next. I realize y'all were probably fans at one time that have since turned because you don’t agree with what I’m writing. I’m just writing and telling about our adventures from my perspective. Nothing personal towards anyone in particular, this is just what it

40

AUGUST 2019

looks like from my point of view. When we started racing in this class we were welcomed with open arms by everyone and as Chase started getting competitive....the hospitality ended! That’s ok though, I’m not mad at anyone. With that being said, I do have a sense of humor and I have been known to poke fun and rattle your cage...especially when I know you're paying attention to everything I do and say!...We just want to have fun while doing what we love...RACING!!! Honestly, I’ve enjoyed letting everyone in on this journey with us so far. I appreciate all of our readers and fans. (Even you haters!...A wise person once said “No publicity is bad publicity” so I’ll even count you all as “publicity” because y'all are trying to get a copy of this magazine before the ink dries! HAHAHA! Thank Y’all too, we appreciate it!!!) Honestly, racing rivalries are great for the sport. If we all cheered for the same driver, what fun would that be. OK...Now that we’ve got that cleared up, let’s get to the good stuff! June 21,2019 at Hattiesburg Speedway...15 modifieds registered and we started on the pole for our heat race! Chase jumped out front and had a pretty comfortable lead before a final caution ganged everyone back together for a two lap shootout! We ended up 3rd at the checkered flag with a few bent parts on the front suspension, along with the driver’s door caved in, and the hood crinkled up! Someone wanted that heat race win worse than us! Chase was disgusted and after going over and talking with the other driver he told me we could load what was left of his car on the trailer. He said he was DONE!...That was out of character for Chase. Ever since he’s been involved in racing he never quits and never gives up! I remember when he was just 5 years old racing karts at the Cajun Indoor Nationals, he was running 3rd and coming to the front when he jumped the 2nd place karts tire! Chase flipped into the infield! All I saw was him skidding on his helmet with that kart on top of him! He was tiny!!! I jumped the fence and ran to him! I got there at the same time as the safety crew...We flipped that kart off of him and I snatched him up! I was scared to death! He had gas all over him! I looked in his eyes as I raised his little shield! I said “ARE YOU OK BUDDY???” I’ll never forget what he said...He said “Daddy are they gonna put me back in 3rd or send me to the rear?” LOL!!! They sent him to the rear and he came back and finished 3rd that night! ANYWAY...Back to present day...Chase went and sat down in the bleachers to watch the races. Just before our feature was to line up I sent him a text that said “You want me to cap her off with fuel so you can go kick some butt?” Less than a minute later I saw a flash running toward me through the pit gate! WIDE OPEN!!! What an awesome sight that was! I knew he/we would regret not racing the feature if we went home like that. We topped off the fuel and made a quick turn on some wrenches and off he went. We started 6th but our car was still all gimped up from the heat race action! Chase battled it out and brought us home 7th! That next week when I tore into the front end to see what kind of damage we had, this is what I found...Bent upper and lower ball joints on the left front, bent spindle on the left front, toe in was knocked out over 2’’ and the worst thing was the center drag link on the steering was bent so bad that the car could only turn about 10% to the right but would turn until the tires hit the frame to the left...we all know that in dirt track racing you have to turn right to go left! So Chase really did a great job in the feature hanging on to his car and he still managed to race clean side by side with a few different competitors! Another great night of racing! Learning and getting more experience! June 29, we decided to return to Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Alabama! If y'all remember our last trip over there we won our heat race and got tangled with a lapped car after the checkered, which knocked the rear end out of our car and ended our night! Well we jumped right off the trailer and won our heat race again, but this time we made it back to the trailer in one piece. LOL...We prepared our car for the 20 lap feature and off we went! Chase lead the pack into turn 1, but Rusty Cooper (#6) had the lead coming out of turn 2 and he never surrendered it for the 20 lap feature! Chase ran 2nd most of the race, but he did fall back to 3rd on a restart. Chase was able to reclaim his position before the

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

checkered flag flew! So we came home with a win in the heat and a strong 2nd place finish in the feature! AWESOME JOB!!! Our teammate Jade Luzenberg (#246) was 3rd in the heat and 3rd in the feature! Great night for these guys! Another upcoming young driver, Ty Pilgrim (#27), drove his modified to a solid 4th place finish. These young guys are looking better and better each week! Next race...Whynot Motorsports Park 7-6-19...9 modifieds registered at the “House of Hook” and we were 3rd fastest in hot laps. We lined up 3rd in the heat and Chase was leading the pack at the flagstand at the close of the 1st lap! He put that hotrod on the high side and he was GONE! With just 2 laps to go here comes Greg Hollingsworth (008) working on the inside of Chase! Hollingsworth had started last and he had just made an effortless pass on Chase for the lead with just one lap remaining! That cat is FAST!!! Chase finished 2nd and we met up in the pits and began having a serious conversation about adjustments on our car for the feature. You see, we had spent the whole 2 ½ -3 hour drive to Meridian talking strategies. Every time we’ve been to Whynot it seems like we have adjusted our way out of contention for the feature race. Our number one strategy going into the night was to leave the car alone and hope for better results in the feature race...no matter what! WELL!!! By the end of the heat race Chase felt like his car was needing to be a hair tighter to be faster. SO...will we steer the course and stick to our well thought out strategy? Or will we try to tighten the ole hotrod up just a tad and go for a win in the feature event?...After several different trips to inspect the current condition of the track (which appeared to be slicker by the moment) we mutually made our decision!!! We both jumped underneath that mug and went to wrenching on it. To make it better you know!!! Tighten it up just a little bit! I ain't gonna lie! I was as nervous as a long-tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs! Here we go! Starting on the outside front row...Chase hits that high side and looks pretty fast for a lap or two...once ours tires got a little heat in them our adjustments started to shine!...WE WENT STRAIGHT BACKWARDS!!! It looked like we had an anchor hooked to us! The car would not rotate in the center which caused it to push from the center off and we were quickly losing positions. Chase tried several different lines and entry/exit points but he just had a fight on his hands everywhere on the race track. He finished 6th in the feature and we had the whole ride home to talk about what had happened. In all seriousness...We were bouncing tidbits of info off of each other and something clicked!!! Apparently, we had accidentally stumbled upon some very valuable info from what we had previously thought was a disastrous run! It took what I had seen and realized myself, combined with what Chase had felt in his car, mixed in with a conversation Chase had with a stranger after the race to complete this puzzle! Chase and I were excited! I made a phone call the following week to Noah Daspit and Jamie Luzenberg and the 3 of us have possibly stumbled upon something great to help us with the 2nd half of the races each race night. We always come out strong and fade later in the night so hopefully this is going to be the key to winning races!!! Y’all stay tuned!!!! Thanks again to all you sponsors, readers, and fans! We are having a great time doing what we love and we couldn’t do it without you all! Until next time...Chavus
