“There are people who motivate you, inspire you and challenge you to move forward and accomplish your dreams, and then there are people who are a weight. They pull you down and leave you feeling heavier, discouraged and negative. Choose to be around people who motivate and inspire you.” …… Joel Osteen

Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo People say as we get older time seems to slip by faster. So… as I reminisce about my ’glory days’ and all the seemingly important things that took place in my life… like becoming a teenager, (took a lot longer than thirteen years) and waiting till I turned sixteen so I could legally drive which took forever. Then it was time to leave home and see the world, thanks to the U.S. Navy…. next came marriage, children, lot’s of bills and the responsibilities to meet them all. My past is filled with the memories of decisions I made and not all of them were good ones. For me this time of year is like a ‘time out’... sort of a break in the action of life and I like to think most of us fill our days with thinking of others. It’s the holiday season and giving fills our hearts... We are once again at the last month of the year, December. A month that is full of emotions, most of them thinking about Christmas and what we can give, or afford to give, and for some what they will get. To me it’s a mixed bag. I love all the Christmas spirit, from decorating the house to the shopping not to mention the family and friends gathering together. I also know there is the side that Ebenezer Scrooge discovered; the reality that for some, Christmas may be one of the hardest times of the year. It’s hard to keep your spirits up when you feel you can’t participate in the way you would like to. There is a way for all of us to remember what the true spirit of Christmas feels like. All we have to do is think back to a time when we were told our first Christmas stories. And in this months magazine are a few of mine, starting off with;

My grandfather, Joshua ben-Yahoudi, built it back when his trading business was at a peak. And he built it big enough to fit all fourteen kids. Well, a few years ago, the missus and I were just rattling around in that big house--kids grown up and all--and we were thinking, maybe we could take in a few travelers. Rachel has always been mighty good in the kitchen, so we just let out word that we'd take people in, and they started to come. Every night we'd have a person or two, sometimes more. People would always come back when they came to town again, intent on another bowl of Rachel's lamb stew. Then came that blankety-blank census the governor thought up. Taxation, pure and simple! People from all over the province flooded into town that week. Filled us clean up. Rachel and I slept in the main room where we always do, and we started putting guests in the other three rooms. They kept coming. Then we doubled up two or three families to a room. They kept coming. Finally, when we had filled the main room with four families plus Rachel and me, we started turning people away.

I must have gotten in and out of bed ten times that night, stumbling over bodies to get to the door. "No more room, sorry folks. No more room. Come back in the morning. We have a couple of families leaving then." They'd mutter something and head back to their party, and sleep somewhere next to a house under the shelter of a blanket. I just couldn't make any more room. That's the honest truth. But I did make room for one more couple. Joseph was a burly man with big arms and strong hands, down from Nazareth, I think he said. He wouldn't take "no" for an answer. I would say, "No, I'm sorry," and he'd tell me about his "little Mary." Well, when I saw "little Mary" she wasn't very little. She was just about as pregnant as a woman can get, and awfully pale. While Joseph was pleading, I saw her grab her tummy in pain, and I knew I couldn't let her have that baby outside in the wind and sleet. The barn. That would just have to do, I told myself, and led them and their donkey out back. Now it was pretty crowded, so I shooed several animals into the pen outside to make room in one dry corner. Joseph said, "We sure are grateful, sir." Then with a serious look, he asked me, "Do you know where I can find a midwife in these parts? We might need her tomorrow or the next day." That man didn't know much about having babies, it was plain enough to see. I ran to Aunt Sarah's house and pounded on the door until her husband came. "One of the travelers is having a baby," I told him. "I'll wait while Aunt Sarah gets dressed." I stopped a moment to catch my breath. "And tell her to hurry." By the time we got back to the barn, Joseph had "little Mary" settled on some soft, clean hay, wrapped up in a blanket, wiping the perspiration off her brow, and was speaking softly to her as she fought the waves of pain. Aunt Sarah sent me to get my Rachel, and then pushed Joseph and me out of the barn. "This ain't no place for men," she said. We waited just outside in the shelter of the barn for hours, it seemed like. Well, all of a sudden, we hear a little cry. "You've got a baby boy," Aunt Sarah was saying as we peeped around the corner. She hands the young-un to Rachel, and she wraps it up in those swaddling bands she had saved. Cute little thing, I tell you. Well, Joseph goes over to Mary and gives her a big hug, and a kiss on the cheek, and Rachel hands Mary the baby, and then comes over to me and takes my hand. "Remember when our Joshua was born?" she whispers. The lantern was blowing almost out, the cattle were lowing softly, and baby Jesus was asleep in his mother's arms. That's how I left them as I walked Aunt Sarah home. Chilly wind, though the sleet had stopped. By the time I got back, Rachel was in bed, and I was about ready to put out the light, step over sleeping bodies, and get under the warm covers, when I heard some murmuring out by the barn. I'd better check, I told myself. When I peeped in, I saw shepherds. Raggedy, smelly old shepherds were kneeling down on the filthy barn floor as if they were praying. The oldest one was saying something to Joseph about angels and the Messiah. And the rest of them just knelt there with their heads bowed, some with tears running down their faces. I coughed out loud, and Joseph looked up. I was almost ready to run those thieving shepherds off, when Joseph motioned to me with his hand. "It's okay," he whispered. "They've come to see the Christ-baby." The Christ-baby? The Messiah? That was when I knelt, too. And watched, and prayed, and listened to the old shepherd recount his story of angels and heavenly glory, and the sign of a holy baby, wrapped in swaddling bands, to be found in a stable-manger. My Lord, it was my stable where the Christ-baby was born. My manger he rested in. My straw, my lamp, my wife Rachel assisting at his birth. The shepherds left after a while. Some of them leaned over and kissed the sleeping Christ-child before they departed. I know I did. I'll always be glad I made room in the barn for that family-- that holy family. You see, I'm not some mean inn-keeper. I was there. I saw him. And, you know, years later that boy came back to Bethlehem, this time telling about the Kingdom of God. Oh, I believe in him, I tell you. I was there. And, mark my words, if you'd seen what I've seen, you'd be a believer, too. Now that’s an interesting way of telling the Christmas story…. Here is another story that makes you want to make Christmas special for someone..

DECEMBER 2016

I remember my first Christmas party with Grandma. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered. "Even dummies know that!" My grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her world-famous cinnamon buns. Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus!" she snorted. "Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad. Now, put on your coat, and let's go." "Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second cinnamon bun. "Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days. 'Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's. I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for. I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church. I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobbie Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class. Bobbie Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobbie Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobbie Decker a coat. I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that. "Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. "Yes, "I replied shyly. "It's ... for Bobbie." The nice lady smiled at me. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas. That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper and ribbons, and write, "To Bobbie, From Santa Claus" on it -- Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobbie Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially one of Santa's helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobbie's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus", she whispered, "get going." I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his doorbell and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma. Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobbie. Forty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my grandma, in Bobbie Decker's bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team. So here’s to all of you on Santa’s team may your thoughts during the Christmas holidays be filled with the spirit of the Shepherds from the manger while enjoying the happy moments you bring to those with whom you share.

Jimbo, Here is some food for thought‌. The Magic Bank Account Imagine that you had won the following *PRIZE* in a contest: Each morning your bank would deposit $86,400 in your private account for your use. However, this prize has rules. The set of rules: 1. Everything that you didn't spend during each day would be taken away from you. 2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account. 3. You may only spend it. 4. Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400 for that day. 5. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, Game Over!". It can close the account and you will not receive a new one. What would you personally do? You would buy anything and everything you wanted right? Not only for yourself, but for all the people you love and care for. Even for people you don't know, because you couldn't possibly spend it all on yourself, right? You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, because you knew it would be replenished in the morning, right? Actually, this game is real ...Shocked ??? Yes! Grandparents........ 1. She was in the bathroom putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she'd done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!" I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye.... 2. My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?" 3. After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?"

HONORING OUR VETERAN’S was the call of the day Friday, November 11th as two clubs combined their efforts to observe Veteran’s Day. The Red Creek Classic Car Club in conjunction with the Rebel Dip Hot Rod Lunch Bunch consisting of the He Man Woman Haters and Rebel Queen’s Yes Dear No Dear Club cruised together from the Wiggins Walmart parking lot to Snow Boogers, the new snow cone and dessert hot spot in Big Level Ms. It was the first annual Snow Boogers Veteran’s Flag Cruise and Bluegrass Jamboree. The He Men and Rebel Queen’s met for their weekly Friday Hot Rod Lunch at the iconic Rebel Dip on Highway 49 South, Gulfport Ms. After their meal the group with the strange name cruised north to Wiggins, met with the Red Creek crew and together the clubs cruised to Snow Boogers, displaying their American flags as they meandered thru Downtown Wiggins. The club’s also enjoyed the beautiful scenery and farm land of the Stone County Countryside. The cruise was enhanced by a blue light escort by the Stone County Sheriff's Department as each intersection provided the cruisers priority. The participants were humbled by the show of patriotism displayed by citizens of the Wiggins area as motorists pulled to the roadside and pedestrians held their hand over their heart or saluted as the procession passed by. After arriving at Snow Boogers the happy hot rodders were treated to Southern hospitality, amazing desserts, and were entertained for the afternoon and evening by The Bluegrass Cabin Boys. Julie Bond and the Booger Bunch also offered the hungry hoard a choice of a delicious Taco Soup or red beans and rice on a donation basis. A good time was had by all, the Veterans were honored and it was an example of what can be accomplished when clubs join together for a common cause without concern of who gets the credit. This first annual cruise revealed some areas that will be adjusted for next year so more cruisers can enjoy the event. Don’t worry about the mule being blind just load the wagon! 4. A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!" 5. My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo and I said, "No, how are we alike?'' "You're both old," he replied. 6. A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it about?" he asked. "I don't know," she replied. "I can't read." 7. I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!" 8. When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights." 9. When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." "Look in your underwear, Grandpa," he advised "Mine says I'm 4 to 6." 10. A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today." The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. "That's interesting." she said. "How do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'I and add 'es'." 11. Children's Logic: "Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. "Sure," said the young boy confidently. 'It means carrying a child." 12. A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's duties. "They use him to keep crowds back," said one child. "No," said another. "He's just for good luck." A third child brought the argument to a close."They use the dogs," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrants." 13. A 6-year-old was asked where his grandma lived. "Oh," he said, "she lives at the airport, and when we want her, we just go get her. Then, when we're done having her visit, we take her back to the airport."

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage December 2016 Its been a fantastic year for the Gizmo family. The Queen is healthy and still gainfully employed. I am gainfully retired and thankful for that I might add. The Children and grandchildren are all healthy and doing well. In the automotive project department, I had set a goal early this year that we got accomplished as well. Some of you know that I have been working on a 51 Chevy Pickup also known as Chase's Big Truck. We, Chase and I, fired up the motor, an LS type engine for the first time recently. Also one of the easiest first time start ups I have ever experienced too. Very few if any little gremlins to work out. Just a couple of little leaks on clamps I had forgotten to tighten. It runs and is loud, so now its time to install some mufflers and exhaust, and get ready to paint the cab, and with some luck and patience take a ride in it maybe some time next year. And continue to paint all of the other parts that are presently taking up most of my shop. Looking forward to the Christmas Season as well. Its a most wonderful time of the year. Seems as though the marketing starts too soon to me, long before Thanksgiving and just after Halloween, the stores start putting out their Christmas displays. I just think they should wait until the day after Thanksgiving to begin this process, but that's just my view. I do enjoy the Christmas music that starts getting played on several radio stations and am often saddened when it stops the day after Christmas. Another Gizmo family tradition at least for me is to watch the Christmas Story, the one about the kid that wants a Red Rider BB gun. I have got to watch that at least once during the season. Its a classic. I also look forward to attending (as many as I am able to) the various Club toy runs and events aimed at helping the children in many communities have a good Christmas. Its a spirit of giving by many groups and individuals, but the Car and Motorcycle groups seem to have that spirit sewn in to the fabric of their respective organizations, and it is truly a blessing for those that receive the various gifts and those that provide those gifts as well. I also try to remind everyone I run across to not forget what this season is about, the Greatest Gift of All was born during this time in a little manger in Bethlehem, and his parents named him Jesus he and only he is the reason for the season. From the Gizmo Family, may God Bless, and we wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Gizmo

The Rudolph Song Once upon a time there was a King in Lapland called Rudolph. He had bright ginger hair so his people called him Rudolph the Red. Now Rudolph the Red was bad-tempered and argued a lot. He gave his poor wife, Gertrude the Green, a terrible time. No matter what she said he had to argue. One winter's day Gertrude the Green looked out of the palace window and said, “Oh dear, it's snowing again. You'll have to clear the footpath before mother comes to tea.” “Humph!” Rudolph the Red grunted. He didn't fancy shoveling snow and he didn't want Gertrude the Green's mother coming to tea. “That's not snow. It's rain!” he argued. “But it's white and fluffy and drifting,” Gertrude the Green tried to tell him. Rudolph the Red hid behind his newspaper and snapped, “It's rain!” Gertrude the Green became quite angry. “Gertrude the Green knows snow, darling!” “Yes,” retorted her husband. “And Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear!” “What a great title for a song!” Gertrude the Green exclaimed.

COOKIES & CAKE By: Carolyn

Who's tired of eating all those cookies? How about something a little lighter this month? A super easy cake that even a novice can make. Applesauce Bundt Cake 1 box yellow cake mix 1 2/3 cups applesauce 3 eggs

THEY’VE DONE IT AGAIN !! Pastor Rick Carter and the good people of Bible Baptist Church in Gulfport Ms. put on yet another amazing show with the 10th Annual “Souped up Saturday Hotrodder Event”. As usual the Cruisers began seeking shelter along Dedeaux Rd. and surrounding thoroughfares hours in advance of the 3:00pm gate opening. This much anticipated event creates excitement each year and SUS 10.0 was no exception. It has become, for many, a MUST ATTEND show on their yearly bucket list. With many states represented a new registration record was set with 410 1980 or older cars and trucks in the display area. Unknown to most there’s a guy at the gate with a clicker that counts each participant and spectator as they enter the premises. The Raisin Counter clicked over 3500 souls as the crowd and available parking built to near capacity. The norm throughout the history this show is door prizes and giveaways by the ton and 2016 was no exception. The organizers along with the help of many from the Church membership arranged so many items that something was given away every 10 minutes. We’re not talking ink pens and paper clips here folks but things like Carburetors, Intakes, Valve Covers, Floor Jacks, Welding Shields and on and on. The Grand Prize, as always, was a 350 cubic inch, 330HP GM Crate Engine. The amazing fact about this unique gathering.....it’s ABSOLUTELY FREE !! No entry or registration fees of any type. Other than the very affordable concession stand and event tee shirt prices nothing else is sold, auctioned or raffled. All door prizes and giveaways are dispersed thru a series of free, and I mean absolutely free drawings. For the first time ever SUS asked for donations and passed the hat. Not for the Church or SUS but for the people of South Louisiana that were impacted by the massive flood during the summer. Pastor Rick Cater challenged the crowd and stated Bible Baptist would match dollar for dollar up to $1000.00. After the dust settled the crowd donated $1700.00. With the $1000.00 match Pastor Carter rounded it up to an even $3000.00. Obviously Bible Baptist is a great Church with a generous and big hearted congregation. How it manages to pull this show off each fall is unknown but they’re doing a fantastic job. The parking crew of SUS positioned and parked 240 cars in the first 20 minutes. The organizers are looking forward to the day when the East end of Dedeaux Rd. will be a 5 lane thoroughfare similar to the West end. This will make access much easier, safer and faster. Until then this group of volunteers will continue doing the best they can with what they’ve got and ask participants to be understanding. Looking forward to Souped up Saturday 2017. Keep ‘er between the ditches until we meet again. The Orange Grove Rebel Writer.

The 13th Annual Scarecrow Cruise & Car Show Recap Story by MCC Member – Mike Martin The thirteenth annual Scarecrow Cruise and Car Show was held on October 21 and 22, 2016 in Madison, Ms. What a good time was had by all! The Scarecrow show which began in October 2004 with a handful of cars and a handful of spectators has grown into a monumental event. Over 500 participating cars and over 20??000 spectators jammed the show grounds located at the Tulane University campus at the corner of Highway 463 and Highway 51 in the middle of Madison, Ms. The event, which used to be a Saturday only event, now has become a full two day event. Cars started flowing onto the grounds early Friday morning?? seeking a good place to park. By late Friday most of the paved parking was full. The cars stayed overnight worry free (thanks to the security provided by the Madison Police Department who provided security from Wednesday through Saturday) drawing big crowds of people. A big tractor trailer rig?? owned by nationally known racer and car dealership owner Rick Hendricks?? came late Thursday. This rig, sponsored by long time Scarecrow sponsor Central Mississippi Chevy Dealers, had 7 of Mr. Hendrick’s personal cars?? including two NASCAR racers driven by Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon. This collection is shown only in 3 other events each year. Many people registered on site Friday for the Saturday event. About 60 participants took part in “Cruisin’ For Cash” in which the participants drive their classic cars to 16 different stops at various merchants in Madison, Ridgeland, and Canton. There they get a chance to win desirable prizes, including $1,000 cash. Both the participants and merchants love this event. This year there were events held on Friday evening that were sponsored by Mac Haik Chrysler and Chevrolet dealerships and by the Purolator Corporation. Two bands were on site, and Bar-b-que was prepared and given to all spectators who wanted to partake. Drinks came though the sponsorship of Pepsi/Brown Bottling. We were also excited to have members of the Viper Club displaying their cars. Saturday morning broke fair and warm and participating cars and spectators poured into the show grounds. There were 25 regular vendors on site plus 8 food vendors all doing good business. The two charities that the Mississippi Classic Cruisers, (the car club managing the event), support are the Mississippi SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and Infant Safety Alliance and Hope Hollow Ministries. Both of these organizations also had vendor spots and did good business. The “Cruise” portion of the event left Reunion Subdivision out on Highway 463 about 10 miles West of Madison. The Madision police department provided an escort for the roughly 50 participants who enjoyed the nice drive back into town and onto the grounds site. The crowd at the show site looked much like the Mississippi State Fair…...huge! providing the DJ voice on the PA system. At about 2:30pm the individual award winners were announced with over 150 plaques given out. The 13th annual Scarecrow event was a complete success in everyone’s eyes. Much thanks goes to Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler and to the personnel of the City of Madison. Without their help, this worthwhile event could not be pulled off. In 2003, a few members of the Mississippi Classic Cruisers had an audience with Mayor Mary about the chances of having a car show in the City of Madison. At that time Mayor Mary offered her immediate support and told that small group, “I want to have the best car show in the State of Mississippi!”. Well, we know we are not the largest, but we do think we are the best! See you next year! Mike Martin

If you never been, plan on it for next year. Up the road from Jackson Ms. A little piece on north I-55, exit 108 Main St. to Miss.Hwy 51 is the little town of Madison Ms. Every year for the past 13 years the Ms Classic Cruiser Car Club has put on the Scarecrow Cruse and car show, at or around the 3rd weekend in Oct. I arriver in town Friday afternoon to the smell of hot FREE Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Chips, and a Soda. The Hospitality was a welcome event by itself. Like always great car people. Saturday the weather was great, in the low 70s. The cars, trucks, foreign and race rolled in from all over. Rick Hendrick of NASCAR displayed his race cars with a number of muscle car collection. Brett Farve also had his monster truck on display. The show seemed to be pet friendly, it had a large amount of pet owners walking their pets. Had to be at least 50 to 75 dogs from miniature to waste high. When the Dust settled at the end of the show it was time for me to go the famous Mama Hamils. Everyone was talking about, this Southern cooking and Bar B Que Buffet. Down the road I went, My belly thinks my throat was cut. Let me tell you don't let your eyes overload your yourself. I had to end up staying the night and drive home Sunday. Can’t wait for next year, Save my spot!

Christmas with Louise ! ! ! As a joke, my brother used to hang a pair of panty hose over his fireplace before Christmas. He said all he wanted was for Santa to fill them. What they say about Santa checking the list twice must be true because every Christmas morning, although Jay’s kids’ stockings were overflowed, his poor pantyhose hung sadly empty. One year I decided to make his dream come true. I put on sunglasses and went in search of an inflatable love doll. They don’t sell those things at Wal-Mart. I had to go to an adult bookstore downtown. If you’ve never been in a Xrated store, don’t go. You’ll only confuse yourself. I was there an hour saying things like, “What does this do?” “You’re kidding me!” “Who would buy that?” Finally, I made it to the inflatable doll section. I wanted to buy a standard, uncomplicated doll that could also substitute as a passenger in my truck so I could use the car pool lane during rush hour. Finding what I wanted was difficult. Love dolls come in many different models. The top of the line, according to the side of the box, could do things I’d only seen in a book on animal husbandry. I settled for “Lovable Louise.” She was at the bottom of the price scale. To call Louise a “doll” took a huge leap of imagination. On Christmas Eve, with the help of an old bicycle pump, Louise came to life. My sister-in-law was in on the plan and let me in during the wee morning hours. Long after Santa had come and gone, I filled the dangling pantyhose with Louise’s pliant legs and bottom. I also ate some cookies and drank what remained of a glass of milk on a nearby tray. I went home, and giggled for a couple of hours. The next morning my brother called to say that Santa had been to his house and left a present that had made him VERY happy but had left the dog confused. She would bark, start to walk away, then come back and bark some more. We all agreed that Louise should remain in her panty hose so the rest of the family could admire her when they came over for the traditional Christmas dinner. My grandmother noticed Louise the moment she walked in the door. “What the hell is that?” she asked. My brother quickly explained, “It’s a doll.” “Who would play with something like that?” Granny snapped. I had several candidates in mind, but kept my mouth shut. “Where are her clothes?” Granny continued. “Boy, that turkey sure smells nice, Gran,” Jay said, trying to steer her into the dining room. But Granny was relentless. “Why doesn’t she have any teeth?” Again, I could have answered, but why would I? It was Christmas and no one wanted to ride in the back of the ambulance saying, “Hang on Granny Hang on!” My grandfather, a delightful old man with poor eyesight, sidled up to me and said, “Hey, who’s the naked gal by the fireplace?” I told him she was Jay’s friend. A few minutes later I noticed Grandpa by the mantel, talking to Louise. Not just talking, but actually flirting. It was then that we realized this might be Grandpa’s last Christmas at home. The dinner went well. We made the usual small talk about who had died, who was dying, and who should be killed, when suddenly Louise made a noise that sounded a lot like my father in the bathroom in the morning. Then she lurched from the panty hose, flew around the room twice, and fell in a heap in front of the sofa. The cat screamed. I passed cranberry sauce through my nose, and Grandpa ran across the room, fell to his knees, and began administering mouth to mouth resuscitation. My brother fell back over his chair and wet his pants and Granny threw down her napkin, stomped out of the room, and sat in the car. It was indeed a Christmas to treasure and remember. Later in my brother’s garage, we conducted a thorough examination to decide the cause of Louise’s collapse. We discovered that Louise had suffered from a hot ember to the back of her right thigh. Fortunately, thanks to a wonder drug called duct tape, we restored her to perfect health. Louise went on to star in several bachelor party movies. I think Grandpa still calls her whenever he can get out of the house.

The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. I love to hear them say "you don't look that old." Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. I was raised in a small ranching town in Texas and knew just about everyone. Earlier this year I saw old Tom, an eighty-year old rancher, in town I made it a point to talk to him. Tom had lost his wife a year or so before and rumor had it that he was marrying a 'mail order' bride. I asked Tom if the rumor was true. Well old Tom assured him that it was. I asked Tom the age of his new bride to be. Tom proudly said, “She'll be twenty-one in October.” Now I, know that the sexual appetite of a young woman could not be satisfied by an eighty-year-old man. Wanting my old friend's remaining years to be happy I tactfully suggested that Tom should consider getting a hired hand to help him out on the ranch, knowing nature would take its own course. Tom thought this was a good idea and said he would look for one that afternoon. About four months later, I ran into Tom in town again. “How's the new wife?”, I asked. Tom proudly said, “Good - she's pregnant.” I was happy that my advice had worked out, and continued, “And how's the hired hand?” Without hesitating, Tom said, “She's pregnant too.” Don't ever underestimate old guys. *********************** You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. Ah, being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable. First you forget names, then you forget faces. Then you forget to pull up your zipper. It's worse when you forget to pull it down.

The Road To Family Think back to when you were a small child. Remember Halloween? You ran around with your friends for a week, throwing corn, soaping windows and creating innocent mischief around the community. On October 31st you and your friends would dress up in costumes and collect all kinds of goodies from your neighbors in the area. There would be homemade caramels, caramel apples, popcorn balls, fruit, little bags of candy corn, and candy bars. What great fun it was to go home and sort through it. Sometimes we would be invited to hayrides where we would be hauled around in wagons filled with straw, throwing the straw on one another, laughing and teasing one another. We would bundle up in warm clothing and blankets. No one could see what couples might be doing under the blanket! This would also entail a bonfire with hot dogs ( I guess I had better not use the word wiener any more), baked beans, potato chips and marshmallows. Then the season would turn a little colder and Thanksgiving would be upon us. We would either have the family dinner at our house, or more often than not, pack up the station wagon and go to a central location to meet and give thanks with the entire family. Thanksgiving was a time of heavy eating when I was a child, and a time to reconnect and socialize with my kinfolk. Each family would cook up some dishes that were their particular favorites, and the different delicacies would be combined on the table to set one Great Feast! There were always the designated pie makers, and they would turn out magnificent berry, pumpkin, sugar crème, meringue, and mince meat pies. The pie crusts were homemade with lard. Yes lard! Those were the best pies and I remember those were the flakiest pie crusts in the world! The choices for dessert would also include a variety of cookies and cakes. These are the memories I choose to have. The reality, if I chose to tell you, is that all of these family times weren’t as great as the ones portrayed on T.V. That family times don’t turn out as we’d hoped can only be blamed on television and its inaccurate portrayal of family life. Have you ever noticed that those people on the shows went for hours and even days without ever having to go to the bathroom? Have you ever wondered if 25 of them had to share a single bathroom? My grandma always said the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas was so we could rest up and be ready to eat heartily again for the Christmas Feast! Thanksgiving would end (and so would the break from school) just in time for us to start the jolly season of Christmas (and another break from school). Usually this actually did mean we would be packing the family truckster and travelling to the grandparents’ home for the opening of the gifts and more stuffing our stomachs. The fellowship of the other children and family would be interrupted with arguments and jealousy, so as to keep the older folks on their toes. I know us young people were more interested in our presents than celebrating the birth of Jesus. That is the way it is, I believe. As I age, I understand the true meaning of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and family. I pray that all of us stop and reflect on all of our blessings. We live in the most amazing and unique country in the world. We have freedoms that others can only dream about. I give thanks to the Veterans that fought for and gave their lives for this great United States.

Merry Christmas! God Bless!

A great trip, a great car show, time with my brother, a bi-plane ride, a rockin preacher, a beautiful queen and more we’ll cover in this edition of 17 FOREVER….. After working all day, getting the last minute details completed, I headed out with Maxie my Yorkie, to The Fall Florida AutoFest in the Tampa/Lakeland market about 10 pm on Wednesday night. It’s a 12 hour trip each way pulling the Hot Rod Show trailer, this time with the extra weight of the golf cart and load levelers to stabilize the load. About 2 am I had to pull into a rest area to take a couple hour nap, I couldn’t hold my eyes open any longer. After my phone alarm woke me up it was back on the road. I drove another 100 miles or so and was sleepy again. (You see…the night before I left, I was up until almost 3 am to watch the Presidential returns…so I was sleep deprived before I left, lol) So I pulled into another rest area and took another two hour nap. After the second alarm sounded I was good to go. I arrived in Lakeland about 2 pm Thursday afternoon. I got the Hot Rod Show trailer setup and got checked in to the hotel. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, up at 6am breakfast, ice and a thermos of coffee and off to the car show. The Fall Florida AutoFest is a car lover’s dream. So much to do at this car event, it’s so much more than just a car show. The show is stretched out over about a square mile. You can rent scooters and I highly recommend it. I had my golf cart and it was a life saver. A large car show, just as many cars in the car corral for sale, hundreds of swap meet vendors and plenty of food booths. The classic car auction sold over 400 cars in two days. The nicest Wall Of Death, classic motor-drome show I’ve ever seen with hourly shows. This show features motorcycles, old, old Harleys going fast enough in an enclosed circle to ride up on the walls near where you were standing around the top. It was great to see this family carrying on a great tradition with this old time dangerous favorite. The original Bat Mobile, the Bat Cycle complete with the sidecar was also there on display, plus the original Bat Copter that was actually used in the TV Show and movie and you could go for a ride in it. You could also ride in a World War II bi-plane, a Stearman. You could also ride in a Vietnam era Huey Helicopter or a Cobra Jet Helicopter.

My brother Ken and his wife Linda went to the show in his 1931 Chrysler along with his friends Steve and Janet Reed and their 1968 Pontiac Firebird. They hit the swap meet. Ken got a new front bumper for his car. Steve found a steering wheel for his Firebird. Steve had paid over $100 two other times just for a better center cap for his steering wheel, at the swap meet he found a better original steering wheel and center cap than he had… all for $10.

Ken Barfield I had told Ken about the bi-plane rides from the first show I did there and I thought I could get him a ride. I had interviewed the pilot and afterwards told him my brother used to own a Cessna 170 and had always wanted to take the stick in a bi-plane. He told me to get him to the show and he would hook him up. He did and I have never seen my brother so excited. A couple hours later, Ken told me “I think I’m going to pay and do it again.” Which he did, I have never seen him so excited about anything. It was worth it all. Even my brother stealing my golf cart, well they really didn’t steal it, I let them borrow it and they were gone forever! But I didn’t need it and they had a good time. My sister in law had broken a bone in the top of her foot, so she really needed not to be walking.

In talking with the promoter, Jim Brady, I offered him an hour of Elvis gospel on Sunday morning, he liked the idea. I also suggested he get a preacher to do a devotional at the end of the hour. Well on Saturday this rough looking, cleanly dressed guy came to the trailer with a thick Swedish accent and told me he was doing the devotional and it would be about 20 minutes. I’m thinking oh no, this guy has such a thick accent and what will he say? This guy blew us away. His name was Pontus J Back, he was from Finland, a snowbird. He gave his testimony. He was on his deathbed, kidneys failing and other organs failing from hard living, doctors had done all that could do, told him his time was short. He said he cried out to God to save his life and was saved… the doctors came in the

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

next morning and were amazed that his kidneys were working and everything else was starting to come back and he fully recovered. His gave his life to God and asked God what do I do for you. God put on his heart to go forth and tell his story. After he told his story, he sang some of his songs and played the guitar and blew us all away. He was a member of Molly Hatchet, White Snake and several other bands. What a talent and what a testimony. He’s called the Rocking Reverend and he is with an organization called RFC – Rodder’s For Christ. I told him how wrong I had been about him and how much his message blessed me. Google him, there is a video at the bottom of his website page that will give you an idea about what he did, but he was much more impressive in person.

Sunday as the show was starting to wind down Miss Florida, Courtney Sexton made an appearance at the show. I knew she was coming and put together about a 10 minute interview with her, I did my homework on her and had all my questions ready. It’s a good thing I did, otherwise I would have just sat there mumbling, lol. She was very sweet, had penetrating eyes, incredible personality, was witty, vivacious, a great talker and I saw right away why she won. She was very pretty and also won the swimsuit competition. She left with a Terry Mason Hot Rod Show cap. She could have had anything she wanted, lol. That girl will go far in life! At the end of the day Sunday I packed everything back up, hooked the trailer back up and got it ready for the trip home. Back to the hotel packed everything, loaded the truck, walked next door and ate at IHOP and back to the room and went to bed about 8 pm with a wakeup call for 2 am. Back on the road with a nap about 4 am and rolled into Gulfport about 2 pm. (I picked up an hour changing time zones). Washed the Hot Rod Show trailer at the car wash got it put away, got the truck unloaded and the luggage unpacked, got a bath and went to bed. Back to work Tuesday and Tuesday night I am writing this column. It will take me all week to rest up and get over the trip. But I had a blast, spent time with family and made new friends, great trip! That’s all for now…Hope Santa is good to you and remember what Christmas is really all about! It’s 1949, I’m in Memphis with Joe Lucy and Danny Burke. We (Danny and I) ran West Memphis Race Track every Saturday night. The West Memphis track was actually in Arkansas across the river. (this was midgets, stocks, Sprints and was the thing to do). Danny Burke was my mentor, great midget driver, great chassis builder, welder fabricator. So, the call came into Joe Lucy (the owner of both midgets cars that we drove, Danny in the #4 and me #5). The call was from Pat Clancy, Indy car owner, and sponsored by the “Bardahl Oil Co. Pat had pitched (talked) to the big wheels at Bardahl about running a “6 wheel” Indy Car. The 4 rear wheels had to be “in line” (according to the Indy Car rule book). So Joe Lucy came over and told Danny to call Pat Clancy (also in Memphis) and help him any way he could. From that time forward I began to see how political, and tough the management of Indy racing was! Danny & I extended the frame and the wheel base and installed a “coupler shaft” for 2nd axle and gear box. That’s me on the left of the tail, Pat Clancy in the middle and Danny on the right! I still have the “Mobil Oil” Tee Shirt. Next we have Jimmie Davies, who was the next driver for Pat Clancy and Bardahl. In 1950 Jimmie drove a Indy 500 Chassis built by “Ewing” at the British road course, also Monza, and came home. (at Indy in 1950 he was 12th, in 1951, 16th, 1953 10th and 1953 a 3rd! (see photo) this was a Kurtis Roadster, the fastest car at Indy, until they brought in the rear engine British cars and changed the rules. He was born 1929, died @37 years in 1966, at Chicago’s Santa Fe Speedway in Chicago, (yes I ran there and also Soldiers Field Stadium in Chicago in the 1949 & 1950’s. Jimmie was the 2nd man to win 3 USAC National Midgets Championships. He won 46 midget features in his career. In 1960 & 1961 driving his own midget in the “night before the 500 he won all 3 races at 16th St. Speedway. In 1963 he took his midget to Australia, won Sydney, and Rowley Park Speed ways.

PINUP ARTISTS PART 3 By Candy Cocktail The third and final installment of my series on modern day pinup artists shines the spotlight on two uber-talented, self-taught artists that have created beautiful, yet oh-soseductive pinup artwork! Sure to make you look twice, their distinctive art features some of the top pin-up models of today as well as an array of Hollywood starlets and quirky animated characters. Linda Jackson Linda Jackson of DarlinDesign, was born in Sweden. She always had a passion for drawing, especially glamorous ladies. The artist is completely autodidact, aka self taught, and is still learning every day to improve her skills. Linda attended art school and university. However she soon realized that for her, it was a waste of time and money. Pinup art or "happy art" is seen as "commercial" and therefore frowned upon in that kind of circuit. She lost all her confidence there and for a decade and a half, she did not so much as touch a brush or pencil. Then a very radical life change brought Linda to the path of becoming a pin-up artist. Quickly leaving everything behind and selling most of her belongings, with the exception of

18

only what she could fit into two suitcases, she moved to London to her then boyfriend, now husband. Together the couple created images under the name DarlinDesign which they exhibited a couple of times and sold prints of their work at a stall at Camden market on the weekends. It has been an intense ride since then. Sacrificing what others take for granted to get to where she is at today: holidays, weekends, social life, buying new clothing and having a car, all to be able to keep going with her passion: her art. As she states, "This is my choice and my passion for this is enormous!" Describing her unique style of pin-ups, Linda said, "My pin-ups have a touch of vintage glamour and I want them to be classy. The right amount of naughty, flirty and seductive. It is more about giving them glamour and power than just being plain sexy. It is an amazing feeling getting to create magical pinups out of real people; enhance what you like about yourself and sprinkle fairy dust and star quality on everyone. It is not like saving the world or anything, but I do let people of all ages, sizes, genders and colors have a place in pin-up art and get to feel special. That is very rewarding for me." The ideas and inspirations she gets are too many in comparison to the time she has to create. Getting her ideas from dreams, fashion, burlesque, vintage shopping, flea markets, books, music and films, she tends to not indulge in other artists' work too much so as not to taint her own distinct ideas. Linda says, "My hopes and dreams for the future are to be able to afford to do this full time and to challenge myself more with bigger projects, like oils and exhibitions. I want my work to have my personal touch of uniqueness written all over it. It is a way of becoming immortal isn't it?" ;) Links: Instagram - @darlindesign www.facebook.com/darlindesign Email: valkyriesweden@gmail.com

Mark Sheard

During his impressive 20 year career, artist Mark Sheard has done some remarkable animation work. Growing up in the suburbs of Australia, he has been drawing since he could hold a pencil and he has not stopped since then. Instead of having formal qualifications like some artists, Sheard started work at a young age and just went from job to job, picking up every skill he could along the way. Thus, he learned a lot of valuable industry experience that way, saying that he still makes use of those insights when he is teaching, which he does on the side to everything else. Way back in 1996, Mark started his professional artistic career working on the children's animated series "Li’l Elvis Jones and the Truckstoppers". Even though he was only 17 at the time, the time he spent being trained as a traditional animator on the series set him up with the skills to work proficiently and fast. Over the years Mark has worked on various TV series. In addition to animating and directing numerous television commercials for many major advertising agencies, Mark has even worked as a toy designer. He is the man

20

DECEMBER 2016

responsible for designing the original "Mighty Beanz", which sold over 30 million units and won International Toy of the Year in 2003. In 2008, Mark finished directing his first animated series "The Beach Crew", and his 2010 short film "Squirrel Away" has screened at over 30 film festivals worldwide. In more recent years, Mark was the Assistant Director on the children's animated series "Jar Dwellers S.O.S." as well as the Animation Director on Australia's first animated skit show for adults "Suspect Moustache". While progressing in his professional career, Mark also continues to draw and paint for his own pleasure, creating pin-up artwork that inspires and delights the world over. As Mark states, "I am an Animation Director, lecturer, freelance illustrator and pin-up artist. So I am pretty busy, especially considering I've also got three kids under five years and a beautiful wife who likes to keep me occupied. I love my family. I would not change my life for anything." Always observing and taking mental notes on how things look and move, Mark draws inspiration from almost everything around him. Since he works in the animation industry, he has lots of fellow colleagues that push him creatively: "My dear friend Ashleigh Beevers and I have these little friendly competitions to spur us on to keep creating work for ourselves. She is brilliant. Everyone over at Kustom Lane Gallery in Australia are always helpful too. I am a big fan of all the local homegrown talent there. I just love

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

original works, hand drawn with expression. My mate Gnashing Teeth does the most striking works, I've got a few of his throughout my home. So I find when you surround yourself with great art and greater people, inspiration just comes your way. You only have to look around you." When asked to describe his remarkable style of art, Mark said, "I love to create classic pin-up artworks and draw women who are strong and expressive. I guess my muses tend to mimic my style too; I draw boldly and passionately and contrast it with fine details. Drawing beautiful hair is my specialty though. I love recreating the volume and curls. Whenever I am finding a model to draw, I always look for great flowing hair, I can always alter anything else. I consider myself a traditional artist; I work with ink, watercolors and gouache mostly. Sometimes I do digital works also, however I am still using the same techniques when I do." Mark just recently created his first book. The book, called "Process Love Candy" comes fully loaded with pro tips & tutorials, milestone breakdowns and killer artwork. The book is available on his new website which just launched, where you can also purchase some of his originals, find prints of his art works or inquire about a commission. When it comes to vacation I take mine the week of the Emerald Coast Cruizin’. I’ll head on down to Panama City Beach Florida the Sunday before the actual week-end of Cruizin’ to get a condo (at a bargain price) and just kick back. This was the 12th Emerald Coast Cruizin’ and it just gets better every year. There are so many people who show up early the party starts as soon as you get out of your car. The Emerald Coast Cruizin’ staff has activates lined up for the whole week. Car cruisein’s at different locations during the day and night time activities that you just don’t want to miss. (and then there are the parties at different hotels where old friends are cooking… some of my favorite places to go.) Monday’s cruise to the Nursing homes and VA Retirement home was a huge hit. Tuesday I helped park cars at Sonny’s BBQ. Didn’t take long to fill that parking lot up. Lunch was Great!! Wednesday was the cruise-in at the Harley shop and if you didn’t get there early you just might have to park in the overflow parking lots close to the shop. (every day more and more cars show up for the Emerald Coast Cruizin’ there must have been over a thousand in town they were everywhere) Thursday the show site opened and cars started rolling in early to the Araron Besaant Park. Everyone pick out their place to park, And we set up the Coast Cruizers “Hot Rod Alley”. Friday and Saturday Cruizers spent the time checking out cars & trucks lined up at the auction site, the vendors, and listening to some great bands that were on the big stage. If you were there you understand why this is such a great show. For those of you who haven't been, you have a chance to be some of the first to attend the 1st Emerald Coast Cruizin’ Spring show March 8-11, 2017.

Stefanie Lea As the year comes to a end. I take this time to reflect on all the adventures that I have had. As well as all the changes that have come my way. I can’t help but be grateful for all the opportunities I have come across this year. Mixed with all the miles that I have traveled has not only helped me to grow as a person, It also allowed me to meet and learn so many things from people. Who always allowed me to take something I learned from them home with me and a few of them I will hold close to my heart. From that little drag strip in Gulfport, Mississippi where I found a true friend in life who sparked a passion in my own life again, …. what a true burn out felt like. Then in Nashville, Tennessee where I ran into a group of like minded people that loved all the same things I do. Great music mixed with vintage cars. I finally felt right at home. I found time to enjoy local events that are right out my backdoor. I was able to meet and spend time with old and new friends. Making every weekend something different to look forward to. Meeting at local restaurants for dinner as a city outside our city limits held their weekly cruise-in. Soon I was heading up and over the mountains towards Hiawassee Georgia, this was another adventure with unlimited possibilities for me. Here I was looking at mountain peeks that took my breath away. With scenic views from every car I walked past. Time was filled by snapping shots and listening to story's as I was preparing for my next article. This was something I enjoyed with every step along those path ways. What a beautiful setting for such a amazing car show. . Making a terrific story to be told.

The excitement was building as we headed home from that show Pensacola, Florida was next on my list. White beaches along with another city to mark off my bucket list. I didn't even unpack, I just added a swim suite to my bag and off we went. Up next was going to be one of the best cruizin’s that I attended. Graybeards ... located right in the middle of Birmingham Alabama. This car show was full of all my favorite local bands. This was also my first time to take my own vintage car and show her off. What more could a girl ask for at this point and time in her life. Life was good and I was feeling blessed. Then as a surprise to me I ended up in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Beautiful country side, with mountains that met the highways. Where we found a Mopar grave yard that is a dream come true. Toss in a road trip to Indiana with a stay over in Ohio for some of the best Pizza I have ever had. I learned on this trip, as I was enjoying my pizza. That no matter where your life takes you, everyone has a story to tell. You just tell them you travel and write for MotorSport Magazine, and it will spark something in them within seconds. Whether its about an old car they once owned, or the first car a grandparent bought right off the show room floor. There is something about vintage cars brings out some of the best memories in us all. As soon as we turned around to head home. I found myself heading to Lebanon, Tennessee for a weekend to share with one of my life long friends. This was a trip she was able to ride along with me. And was one trip she and I will talk about for years to come. And one I’ll never forget! Soon I was off to Georgia and South Alabama for several Gasser Drag shows. I learned a lot more about drag racing this year then I ever knew. It’s something that I have to say has a ton of history attached with it. This type of drag racing is making a come back. Not only to honor all of those from the past with pride as it should, but also reminding me this is a working mans hobby. These guys work all day then come home to do what they are passionate about. I can relate to this more then some as I have seen this first hand in my own life. As far as I can tell, this will be the next big thing to show up at your local drag strip this coming year. Then the biggest surprise to me. I met some wonderful people from DaRumble.com from Austin, Texas. They must of seen something in my work that sparked their interest. After working with them a few times. They invited me to work with them at SEMA this year. Yes indeed, the WILD WILD WEST! Before I knew it I was headed to Las Vegas, Nevada! I was to attend one of the biggest car shows of the year. It was truly the Shock of my LIFE! Leading me to one of the biggest adventures of my life as well. I was traveling over 1,800 miles away from home, spending 8 hours on a plane, and not really knowing what was in store for me.

I was praying the past few months had prepared me for anything that was to come my way. I was ready to play with the big dogs. (or at least act like I was.) As I walked towards the convention center I had my game face on. With my camera in hand and my audio recorded ready to go. I was ready for whatever SEMA had in store for me. I was ready and able to take this task on with the passion and drive I earned back with the help from my friend Jimbo. Here was my chance to meet some amazing people from all over the world. Meeting such great people that now I can now call my friends. What an adventure it truly was turning out to be. Here I was interviewing people I looked up to for years. Being able to tell them thank you for showing me an art form that most of the people in my life learned on their own. I was seeing places and experiencing things I never imagined. SEMA, Las Vegas and all the great stories I’ll hold close to my heart was worth every hour spent on that week long journey. As I was heading home on that long dark flight from Las Vegas, I could only go over the check list in my mind of all the things I needed to do as soon as I landed. Next on that list was…..

the annual event in Panama City Beach, Florida. This is the event my whole family looks forward to each year. Emerald Coast Cruizin’ is where I met one of my best friends and now one of my biggest fans. We have been part of this show for so many years it has become a family tradition to enjoy with my mother, father and sister. Mixed with several of our family friends. It’s a family reunion if you will. As we pulled into the show and greeted by people I admire and adore so much. Hugs and laughter filled the air. Emerald Coast Cruizin’ was a little different for me this year, it was my first true official car show for myself and my little bug. And the first time my father and I were able to be in a show together. That is something I had dreamed about for several years, and it was finally coming true. I was at home, safe, loved, and full of emotions. I had to fight back the tears. Cause we all know you can’t cry at a car show!!! As I walked around Emerald Coast Cruizin’ I could only smile as the great weather, food, beautiful beaches, fantastic cars, great music that filled the air was the backdrop to all the people that mattered to me the most all in one place. What a great way to close out one of the best year of my life!

Well it took 60 years, but I finally have a toy worthy of being in a magazine. I always wanted a hot rod but the closest I have gotten was a 1999 3.8 L Camaro. One night, two Junes back, I had half an eye on a Mecum auction and saw this come over the block. Three months later I was in Denver buying this toy you see. The Car, ( I think of it as an "Open-wheel, Track day, Street legal Roadster ") was made by a small single owner company called "Velocity Rail". They make three different version of the same idea known as an Exo-Skeleton. The difference being 3 types of engine (V.W. 1.8 Turbo, 4.2 Audi V 8 and a LS 1-3) This is the V.W. (I like to say Audi) 1.8 L. turbo. Any bigger engine would be over kill. The V.W. 1.8 is an amazing engine. It has 5 valves (3 intake) per cyl. and puts out in stock 180 hp. You can EASILY build this to well over 300 hp with light massaging (KO 4 turbo, next bigger injectors, CRods (If you want over 300 hp) and flash the E.C.U. People have gotten this engine to over 500 hp. with heavy modification. Now for the boring information and then you can get back to your day. It's a Veiocity Rail 1.8 turbo out of a (V.W. B 5 platform) 2002 V.V. Passat. Weight is 1430 lbs. This car puts out ( With a flash to the ECU) 210 hp. with 275 ft.lbs. torque. More than enough to get this 1400 lb. toy to 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. The front suspension is custom fabricated A-Arms with Karmann Ghia spindles, calipers and rotors. QA1 adjustable coil-over shocks. 215-40-17. Nankang "Noble Sport" rubber. The Rims are from Voxx. The front cover as well as the side curtains are MercedesBenz convertible material. VDO gauges (Spedo, Water temp and Fuel (tank is 17 gal.). RaceQuip Jr. Dragster (2 inch web) 5 way harness. Windshield is out of a (YES !) Smart Car. The rear suspension is out of a Saturn Sky, with Bilstein coil-overs and Nankang 275-35-18 rubber. K&N air filter and a custom Magnaflow exhaust.

Many thanks to Carl S., Joe A. Jarrett and Marrious and Mike from "Edco Welding" for the touch ups that all toys need after the fact. A special thanks goes out to Larry Rogers of Heritage Insurance, (ad on inside front cover of this magazine) for securing the insurance that covers my "Open-wheel, Track day, Street legal Roadster ". This toy is a BLAST to drive. This is the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel of a car. EVERY day is track day. I ALWAYS keep it down to the speed limit, but I get there VERY quickly. Thank you for your attention. You can ask me about my toy if you see me at a Cruise-in ( I don't bite ) Bruce Karsch

In History:

OLD SCHOOL DRAG RACING Located about a mile west of the Gulfport and south if I-10 off of Canal Road The Magnolia Dragway opened in 1972. Built and managed by (Monkey) Fred Cospelich, they began holding grudge races on Sunday, June 25, 1972 . From the beginning, the track was sanctioned by NHRA. On July 1, 1973, Leroy Goldstein, driving the Candies & Hughes AA/ FD, won a best of three match race against Clayton Harris. A crowd of 3,000 people saw Harris set a track (and state of Mississippi) record, despite losing the match, with a 6.30 second run. In 1974, he left the famed Ram Chargers team – with which he had recorded the sport’s first six-second Funny Car pass – Leroy Goldstein began driving the team’s second Barracuda Funny Car (above) and won the 1973 Summer Nationals. The event was a high point for the Candies & Hughes team. Its new Top Fueler, driven by Bill Wiggington, back row, left, also set the national record and joined Candies, center, Goldstein, back row, right, and the team in the Englishtown winner’s circle. name of the strip was changed to Deep South Dragway, while retaining its NHRA sanction. On June 22-23, 1974, the track hosted the NHRA first annual Rebel National Open. The new category of Pro Comp was run at this event.. Today the Dragstrip is named Gulfport International Dragway
