“ Stay committed. You’re not always going to feel like it. They’ll be good days and tough days, times when you’re excited and times when you feel like quitting. That’s when you have to dig your heels in and say, “I’m going to do the right thing when it’s hard.” God rewards consistent, faithful, committed people. ” …… Joel Osteen Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo October already seems like it was just a few weeks ago I was saying how much I liked spring and here it is fall. We’re some of the lucky ones, we live in a real car/truck/bike area and there are lots of events to keep all of us on the road livin’ the dream all year long. Here on the Mississippi Coast, Cruisin’ the Coast is the high point of the year for the car & truck folks. For the last twenty-one years the Car Clubs along the Mississippi Gulf Coast joined forces with the cities and tourism committees to create a national automotive event. Thousands of classic vehicles share our coastal Hwy 90 cruisin’ from one city to another. Stopping along the way at entertainment venues with live bands playing music that made them famous. This is truly a way to bring back some of the memories we talk so much about. Some of the articles and stories in this months magazine may remind you of just how fast time may passes. Time to put this magazine to bed so till next month.. enjoy your time at some of the activities listed this month. Here are some of the emails….. Jimbo, The king wanted to go fishing and he asked the royal weather forecaster the forecast for the next few hours. The palace meteorologist assured him that there was no chance of rain. So the king and the queen went fishing. On the way he met a man with a fishing pole riding on a donkey, and he asked the man if the fish were biting. The fisherman said, “Your Majesty, you should return to the palace! In just a short time I expect a huge rain storm." The king replied: "I hold the palace meteorologist in high regard. He is an educated and experienced professional. Besides, I pay him very high wages. He gave me a very different forecast. I trust him." So the king continued on his way. However, in a short time a torrential rain fell from the sky. The King and Queen were totally soaked. Furious, the king returned to the palace and gave the order to fire the meteorologist. Then he summoned the fisherman and offered him the prestigious position of royal forecaster.

The fisherman said, “Your Majesty, I do not know anything about forecasting. I obtain my information from my donkey. If I see my donkey's ears drooping, it means with certainty that… it will rain." So the king hired the donkey. And thus began the practice of hiring dumb asses to work in influential positions of government. The practice is unbroken to this date. gptteebyrd@ Jimbo, Philosophical high ground ain't perfect! Keep this in mind the next time you are about to repeat a rumor or spread gossip. In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day an acquaintance ran up to him excitedly and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about Diogenes?" "Wait a moment," Socrates replied, "Before you tell me I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test." "Triple filter?" asked the acquaintance. "That's right," Socrates continued, "Before you talk to me about Diogenes let's take a moment to filter what you're going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?" "No," the man said, "Actually, I just heard about it." "All right," said Socrates, "So you don't really know if it's true or

not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about Diogenes something good?" "No, on the contrary..." "So," Socrates continued, "You want to tell me something about Diogenes that may be bad, even though you're not certain it's true?" The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Socrates continued, "You may still pass the test though, because there is a third filter, the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about Diogenes going to be useful to me?" "No, not really." "Well," concluded Socrates, "If what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me or anyone at all?" The man was bewildered and ashamed. This is an example of why Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem. It also explains why Socrates never found out that Diogenes was banging his wife. Jimbo, Boudreaux got his first job ever at the drug store in Catahoula. However, not being too smart, he had trouble finding the items customers would ask for. After several customers stormed out of the drug store without their merchandise, the druggist told Boudreaux, "Look, you are costing me too much business. The next customer that you don't sell something to, will be the last straw. I'm going to have to let you go." A few minutes later, in walks Thibodeaux, looking for something for a bad cough. Boudreaux looks and looks, but can't find the cough medicine, so, knowing this is his last chance to keep his job, sells Thibodeaux some Ex-Lax, and tells him to take the whole box at one time. Thibodeaux's cough is so bad that he pays for the ExLax, and takes the whole box before leaving the store. After he leaves, the druggist tells Boudreaux, "Well, that's better. I see you finally sold something. What did that customer want?" Boudreaux replies, "Well, he wanted some cough medicine, but I couldn't find it me, so I sold him some Ex-Lax." The druggist screams at Boudreaux, "Ex-Lax won't help his cough!" Boudreaux answers, "Aw yeah it helped him! Look at him leaning on that post outside. He's afraid to cough!" theeasycajun@ Jimbo, Road Trip... It was Saturday, September 2, 2017, when I stopped driving at Gadsden, Alabama, halfway between New Orleans and West Virginia. The Motel _ had left the light on for me. I've stayed there before. I could have found it in the dark. Motel _ has Cable TV. There was a college football game--not unusual. It was the first game of the season. Unusual was that the No. 1 Division I team, Alabama, was playing the No. 3 team, Florida State, in the first game. It may have been the most important game of the season. Or, maybe not. Many college football coaches seek alumni support and recruit players, by beating tiny, unheard-of, non-conference opponents in the first game. Alabama and Florida State took big risks by playing this first game. The Tide rolled over the Seminoles. That was no surprise. The rankings may mean something. Alabama's coach, Nick Saban, is from Fairmont, WV, and lived near there thru high school in the 1960's. Florida State's coach, Jimbo Fisher, is from Clarksburg, WV, and lived near there thru college in the 1980's. These towns, Fairmont and Clarksburg, are a few miles apart. Coach Saban has coached a lot of important teams since his college days at Kent State, Ohio. Jimbo Fisher's predecessor at FSU, Bobby Bowden had coached college football in WV. Jimbo Fisher's coach at Salem, WV was Terry Bowden. Jimbo Fisher has been an assistant to Nick Saban. I have never met any of these famous people, nor do I know anyone who has. The personalities and connections in college football are fascinating. Over 700 colleges have football teams. Only 128 are in Division I. In 2014, Coach Saban had his No. 2 ranked Alabama team play

WVU in a first game. WVU played OK, and got rolled by the Tide. All I know about football is “Don't bet against Coach Saban's team.” On Sunday, September 3, I finished driving back to WV. It was a good trip, no problems. My interests are somewhat limited by living on a farm in a mountainous rural area. I don't “get-out-much”. I may watch another college football game this year, if Coach Saban's team is on TV. And, I hope to get back to Gulfport before too long. Mendal Yoho …… mrlonranger@ Jimbo, Yesterday I got my permit to carry a concealed weapon. So, today I went over to the local Bass Pro Shop to get a 9mm handgun for home/personal protection. When I was ready to pay for the pistol and ammo, the cashier said, -"Strip down, facing me." Making a mental note to complain to the NRA about the gun control wackos running amok, I did just as she had instructed. When the hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found out she was referring to how I should place my credit card in the card reader! As a senior citizen, I do not get flustered often, but this time it took me a while to get my pants back on. I've been asked to shop elsewhere in the future. They need to make their instructions to seniors a little more clear. I still don't think I looked that bad! Just need to wear underwear more often… gptteebyrd@ Jimbo, If you were in the market for a watch in 1880, would you know where to get one? You would go to a store, right? Well, of course you could do that, but if you wanted one that was cheaper and a bit better than most of the store watches, you went to the train station. Sound a bit funny? Well, for about 500 towns across the northern United States, that's where the best watches were found. Why were the best watches found at the train station? The railroad company wasn't selling the watches, not at all. The telegraph operator was. Most of the time the telegraph operator was located in the railroad station because the telegraph lines followed the railroad tracks from town to town. It was usually the shortest distance and the right-of-ways had already been secured for the rail line. Most of the station agents were also skilled telegraph operators and that was the primary way that they communicated with the railroad. They would know when trains left the previous station and when they were due at their next station. And it was the telegraph operator who had the watches. As a matter of fact, they sold more of them than almost all the stores combined for a period of about 9 years. This was all arranged by "Richard", who was a telegraph operator himself. He was on duty in the North Redwood, Minnesota train station one day when a load of watches arrived from the East. It was a huge crate of pocket watches. No one ever came to claim them. So Richard sent a telegram to the manufacturer and asked them what they wanted to do with the watches. The manufacturer didn't want to pay the freight back, so they wired Richard to see if he could sell them. So Richard did. He sent a wire to every agent in the system asking them if they wanted a cheap, but good, pocket watch. He sold the entire case in less than two days and at a handsome profit. That started it all. He ordered more watches from the watch company and encouraged the telegraph operators to set up a display case in the station offering high quality watches for a cheap price to all the travelers. It worked! It didn't take long for the word to spread and, before long, people other than travelers came to the train station to buy watches. Richard became so busy that he had to hire a professional watch maker to help him with the orders. That was Alvah. And the rest is history as they say. The business took off and soon expanded to many other lines of dry goods. Richard and Alvah left the train station and moved their company to Chicago -- and it's still there. YES, IT'S A LITTLE KNOWN FACT - that for a while in the 1880's, the biggest watch retailer in the country was at the train station. It all started with a telegraph operator: Richard Sears and his partner Alvah Roebuck! "SEARS and ROEBUCK" Bet You Didn't Know That! OK, Maybe you did; I didn't!

Sadly, our friend Charles (Chuck) Herring passed away, August 27, in Gulfport, MS Maybe you don't recognize the man in the picture but if you were into the car show scene or cruise-in’s here on the MS Gulf Coast you would have recognized his voice. Chuck had that way of making the event come to life.. My memories of him are tied started when he talked me into taking Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine from a mostly motorcycle magazine to the magazine you are reading today. Besides being a promoter of the hot rod hobby, he was a photographer. Some of the first covers of MotorSports Magazine were cars/trucks and gals from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Chuck organized or was involved with, some of the first big Gulf Coast car shows. Auto-rama at the coliseum comes to mind. I remember calling on Chuck when charity originations trying to plan a fundraiser would ask for help. Chuck would show up and a event would take place soon after. …. thanks Chuck…. jimbo
Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage October 2017 By the time most of you get to read this, we down here in south Mississippi will be beginning our annual fun with cars event, AKA the 21st edition of Cruisin The Coast. It's a fantastic and fun filled event for everyone that is registered and for those that just wish to be spectators. It's a great time to catch up with old friends from places near and far and also a great chance to meet and make new friends. As many of you know this event would not happen if it were not for the thousands of volunteers that make it happen. Oh and I forgot to mention most if not all are members whose clubs help to organize and pull this off. And they have been doing this for the past 20 years, and quite successfully I might add. These clubs are truly a dedicated bunch, and most if not all agree, It's one of the best things that happens here along the Gulf Coast. Economically it is a major asset for all of the towns that welcome the Cruisers here and along the entire length of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This will most likely be my 18th year volunteering, and also when I can to participate as an entrant. I had to miss a few due to some mechanical issues with my first roadster, and missed one more to have a new hip installed. (that scheduled operation was not my choice it had to happen on the Doctors terms). I sincerely hope you all have fun, and please have patience during your visit here. Many towns get pretty crowded, the cars at times have to sit for a spell, some of them tend to get a little warm, but we do the best we can and try to cool things off and really try hard to make things flow. As most know not many things in life go as smoothly as planned but we do get very close to the plan. And that plans number 1 goal is that you each have a great time. It's as simple as that. As for me I will be with the club hosting the Bay St. Louis site The Misfits Street Krewzers. Try to look me up or find me. And like the rest of the volunteers we will be wearing our bright yellow STAFF shirts. We'll be directing traffic, parking cars, and whatever else humanly possible to pull this all off without a glitch. To steal a line from a popular Christmas song, it's the most wonderful time of the year, for us gearheads anyway. And do me one more favor whenever you get the chance thank one of those volunteers and we in turn say Thank You too for coming on down. Till next time, and I do hope to see as many as I possibly can, till next time.. Gizmo.

Jimbo, A few of you reading this may be able to relate to this story, but many of you won't .. I vividly remember the black phone on the wall and the party line ring .. yeah, those were the days, weren't they???? The Black Telephone………. Those of us old enough to remember when the phone was wired to the wall, usually in the kitchen, can relate to this story. I loved this read. When I was a young boy, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box….. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it. Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person. Her name was "Information Please" and there was nothing she did not know. “Information Please” could supply anyone's number and the correct time. My personal experience with the genie-in-a-bottle came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer, the pain was terrible, but there seemed no point in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone! Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the parlor and dragged it to the landing. Climbing up, I unhooked the receiver in the parlor and held it to my ear. "Information, please," I said into the mouthpiece just above my head. A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear. "Information." "I hurt my finger..." I wailed into the phone, the tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.. "Isn't your mother home?" came the question. "Nobody's home but me," I blubbered. "Are you bleeding?" the voice asked "No, "I replied. "I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts." "Can you open the icebox?" she asked. I said I could. "Then chip off a little bit of ice and hold it to your finger," said the voice.. After that, I called "Information Please" for everything. I asked her for help with my geography, and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my math. She told me my pet chipmunk that I had caught in the park just the day before, would eat fruit and nuts. Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary, died. I called, "Information Please," and told her the sad story. She listened, and then said things grown-ups say to soothe a child. But I was not consoled. I asked her, "Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?" She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, "Wayne, always remember that there are other worlds to sing in." Somehow I felt better. Another day I was on the telephone, "Information Please." "Information," said in the now familiar voice. "How do I spell fix?" I asked. All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to Boston. I missed my friend very much. "Information Please" belonged in that old wooden box back home

and I somehow never thought of trying the shiny new phone that sat on the table in the hall. As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me. Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy. A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle. I had about a half-hour or so between planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, "Information Please." Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well. "Information." I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself saying, "Could you please tell me how to spell fix?" There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, "I guess your finger must have healed by now." I laughed, "So it's really you," I said. "I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time?" "I wonder," she said, "if you know how much your calls meant to me. I never had any children and I used to look forward to your calls." I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister. "Please do," she said. "Just ask for Sally." Three months later I was back in Seattle. A different voice answered, "Information." I asked for Sally. "Are you a friend?" she said. "Yes, a very old friend," I answered. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this," She said. "Sally had been working part time the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago." Before I could hang up, she said, "Wait a minute, did you say your name was Wayne?" " "Yes." I answered. “Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called. Let me read it to you.” The note said, "Tell him there are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean." I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant. Never underestimate the impression you may make on others. Whose life have you touched today? Sent in by giff1500@

To my new Mississippi family Soooooo let me tell y'all about Mississippi, but first let me tell you how God brought us to Mississippi. We decided to evacuate because we didn't feel safe staying home with the kids, So we loaded up our little hunting camper and vehicles with some food and supplies and kids and the fur babies and hit the road. When we started out the roads were not that bad, the further west we got the worse and more packed the roads got, no gas, the only station we found was cash only and limited the amount. It took us approx 13 hours to drive a stretch of road that usually would take only about 4 hours. There were so many cars broke down along the way because they had ran out of gas and was just stuck on the side of the road. We must have passed 30 wrecks because people were being impatient so they took it upon themselves to turn the emergency lane into another lane, which caused a chain reaction of wrecks. You couldn't get off at the exits and try to venture into the little towns because the lines to get back on the interstate was about an hour wait just to travel up the on ramp to the interstate. And we couldn't risk using up that much gas. People were fighting at gas stations over gas and also if you had gas cans in the back of your truck you couldn't even think of leaving your vehicle because people were stealing other people's full gas cans out of trucks as soon as they turned their backs. We finally made it to Bainbridge, Georgia from Welaka at about 18 hours in. We were lucky and found a little campground to pull into and sleep and check the status of the storm. At that point we thought we were safe. We thought wrong, we went to sleep and early in the morning the campground host came around and said the storm shifted west and we were now in prime storm path. They evacuated the whole campground, we had about 30 minutes to pack up and get back on the road again. So we started heading west, we tried getting gas numerous times only to find out lots of Georgia was now being evacuated and they were heading west also, which caused a gas shortage there also. So with a wish and a prayer we just kept driving, my faith in humanity was diminishing at this point because of how mean people were being. I wouldn't even let my kids out of the car for fear of what the ones acting so crazy was liable to do. We hit a very long stretch of road with no service so that's where our GPS quit and we were lost somewhere in Alabama on back roads and didn't no where to go. We finally came across a gas station literally in the middle of nowhere. We stopped and filled up, cash only, but we got some. We sat there for a few minutes, with an actual map we picked up in the little store trying to plot a course of action. At this point a car pulled up and a man got out and told us we needed to get on our way, (now this part I'm adding not to cause commotion but to show how things got turned around on us real quick). We were in a predominantly black neighborhood and the man told us they didn't take kindly to white folks around there trying to
8

buy up all their gas. He was actually being nice warning us but he said the next person to stop may not be so nice and may leave us in a bad way. I've never seen color and to have it turned around on me like that opened my eyes to how people feel not welcome in certain areas. So we got out of there quick. Headed west again, about 10 hours into our drive this day, we finally got into an area with cell service and I started searching hotels and campgrounds, no one could take us, we called over 30 places and literally every place was full. We pulled over again to find the closest Walmart, we had decided to just sleep in a parking lot and take shifts taking watch. Because the storm was literally hours behind us the whole way, we were scared to death we were going to be trapped in a parking lot in the middle of a hurricane. At this point we were on the Alabama - Mississippi border, out of nowhere a man pulls up and steps out of the car, he was in a Air Force uniform, and asked if we needed help. I told him we were trying to find somewhere to stay, he said give me a few minutes. He made some calls and within a matter of minutes we had directions to a campground taking evacuees in Mississippi. I really think he was an angel. He gave us directions and we were on our way again. About an hour later we pulled into Archusa Creek Water Park campground. Us and about 100 other evacuees, as soon as we pulled in we were greeted by the kindest people I have ever met. Doug who looks over the place is truly an angel! Many churches around the town heard there was evacuees and when I say evacuees there is people here that used every bit of money they had to just get here. Their babies were out of formula, diapers, their kids were cold and starving (it's about 55 degrees with the wind here) they only had the clothes on their backs and the vehicles they came in. We were all starving because we let the kids eat up our snacks on they way up. Well we pulled in and they just welcomed us with open arms. They had a hot meal ready for all evacuees from Florida. They are not charging us to stay here and these people up here have all bonded together and made us Florida folks feel right at home. They brought clothes, blankets, food, water, diapers, formula, shoes and much more. They even brought dog food for the fur babies. Since we got here Sunday, We have been fed a hot breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. Different organizations and churches are here every single day bringing us supplies, food, water, whatever we need. They filled all our coolers with ice and gave us all grocery store and Wal-mart gift cards to go out and get the things we need. They filled everyone's gas tank and made sure we are up to date on road closures and such. They even brought their church service to us. All of us evacuees here sat around with praise and worship and a hot meal. Not a dry eye in the place. They have brought toys for all the kids and provided everyone here with soaps and shampoos and wash clothes and all the essentials that none of us thought to bring being limited on
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
space and also being in such a hurry to leave. They provided ones that only showed up in their cars, tents to sleep in. The county came out and provided everyone with enough quarters and laundry soap to do all of our laundry at the campground laundry mat. (You don’t even know how much a god-send clean clothes was at this point) They brought their children out to play with ours and help all the kids here keep their minds off of the chaos. They brought a ice cream truck in and gave all the kids ice cream. These people are angels!!! We have never felt so welcomed. We have never felt so safe. I can't even tell you how humbled I am by the outpouring of love. These people don't know us from Adam and took us all in just like we were close family. I honestly believe God knew all of us here were in trouble and needed help. I feel in my heart that all of these folks are angels. I really feel like God knew we needed them and he sent his finest disciples. I will never be able to repay everything they did for us but I can tell you this, I will never stop paying it forward. I will never forget these people because I will always consider them my faith family and brothers and sisters of God. Mississippi folks are as fine as they come and they are a wonderful example for the rest of the world. They really proved what bonding together can do. And for anyone that has doubts about your faith, come to Mississippi they will show you God is Alive and he will protect you no matter what as long as you keep the faith. To my new Mississippi family, Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am humbled and will never forget what you have done for all of us evacuees. This adventure started because we had bought a New Dodge Challenger RT.... my wife and I decided to buy an old challenger and paint it black and put silver hash marks on it like our new challenger so we would have the best of both worlds, an old challenger and a new challenger.... as were inside the sellers building, looking at the 30+ mopars he has... I noticed this pitiful old dark green barracuda sitting there, hood up, covered with dust and dirt.... no matter what other car my wife and I looked at, that cuda just kept calling me... we eventually made a deal on the cuda and put it on a roll back and took it home. It was a complete car and the body wasn't terrible so away we went....had Double D mobile dustless blasting come to my place after we stripped it down and blast everything off it to really see what we had.... turned out the trunk pan was totally shot a long with the bottom of both quarter panels, even after blasting and priming decided to put 2 new front fenders on it also....it was turning out to be like most old cars that you save, like a hole... the more we dug, the deeper it got...hahaha But we kept digging.... my wife and I loved this green color of a newer challenger, turned out to be called "Green With Envy" how could you not love that paint color name !!!!! built a nova a few years ago and did it two tone and loved it so I knew this one was going to be two tone also....loved this color charcoal on my friends truck so that's what we picked. Then the ideas started !!!! I loved the BIG Mopar M so I incorporated that on the roof with the silver and black and did the hash marks in the same silver with the word "cuda under it on both sides....when my wife saw the green color painted on the car, she deemed it "The Incredible Hulk" and hearing that, my mind ran wild with ideas !!! Having a Chevelle with double stacked blowers, and having raced late model dirt cars for years, this car had to fit my thoughts of what a hotrod is to me. So... I first thought of the motor a 440 stroked to a 499 and then came a new Dyers 871 blower... then thinking "everyone has 2 four barrels....what about 3!!!" Then a great friend of mine, Jim Loy who operates J&L Machine" came into play just like on the chevelle making the adaptor plate for the double blower setup, he made the three 4 barrel intake, the linkage, fuel rail, the 499 INCREDIBLE HULK emblems and the custom one off velocity stacks with the first being 6 inches tall, the 2nd one 8 inches tall and the 3rd one 10 inches tall !!! these things made for some custom additions to our cuda that no one has ever seen !!! Thank you again Jim Loy !!! Julie having named him The Incredible Hulk and being great friends with Tony Headrick and K.W. Clayton, 2 of the best air brushers ever !! 3dheadgraphics.com, I knew I had to come up with an idea and if you can think it, these guys can airbrush it !!!! So after a couple of ideas we hit on the one that's now on the trunk and its absolutely INCREDIBLE !!!! Then actually getting to meet Lou Ferrigno and get his autograph on the artwork and cleared over.... wow...how blessed could I be ??? Thank you Redline LumTronix Halo Headlights for the best headlights ever and Thank the lord for allowing me to be able to build such a MONSTER !!!! Eddie & Julie McMillan, Knoxville Tennessee and here's the throw back to the tv theme I was telling you about....lol be sure to read the bottom as its the theme Eddie McMillan, roofer, house flipper and avid car builder, always looking for a way to tap into the hidden strengths of hotrods of his day...then an accidental over-dose of fumes from racing fuel

and racecars reacts with his unique body chemistry and now when Eddie McMillan finds this special car a startling metamorphosis occurs.....Hidden in a barn for almost 30 years sat this poor old run down barracuda...this became his next project... with a dose of "Green With Envy" paint mixed with a Mopar emblem painted on the roof came a big motor a blower and too many carburetors!!! Now when he cruises in the cuda he tries to stay calm and not get angry, a quick glance at the motor and trunk lid and it will tell you..."Don't make me ANGRY"... "You wont like me when I'm ANGRY" THIS BELOW IS THE ACTUAL WORDS OF THE TV THEME FROM TTHE INCREDIBLE HULK TV SHOW Dr. David Banner, physician, scientist.. searching for a way to tap in to hidden strengths all humans have, then an accidental over -dose of gamma radiation reacts with his unique body chemistry and now when David banner grows angry or outraged a startling metamorphosis occurs.....the creature is driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter....Mr. McGee... don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry...an accidental explosion took the life of a fellow scientist and supposedly David banner as well the reporter thinks the creature was responsible "I gave a description to all the law enforcement agencies they got a warrant for murder on him"... a murder which David banner cant prove that he or the creature didn't commit so he must let the world go on thinking that he too is dead until he can find a way to control the raging spirit that dwells within him...... By: Michael Lachaussee The September Hardee's breakfast was held under a beautiful cool blue sky. We all were anticipating the same type weather for Crusin' the Coast in October. Everyone was talking about their plans for Crusin' with much excitement. There were a good array of cars and trucks at this month's event.
This black beauty belongs to Harold and Trudy Carney from Escatawpa. Trudy missed out on the photo op while Harold took advantage of it! This 1977 Chevy Nova sports a 350 Chevy engine. They have had this car for five years and purchased it from George (Buck) Hinkel. In addition to this beauty, they own a 1983 CJ5 Jeep and a Camaro. Harold and been involved with drag racing and cars most of his life. Harold and Trudy are members of Magnolia Classic Cruisers. See you both at Crusin' the Coast.
This is the future of car collecting and restoration. Jaxon Turner of Lucedale loves cars. His grandfather brought him to the breakfast and said he is in love with cars. In another 20 years, it might be Jaxon hosting the Hardee's breakfast.

The proud owner of this Rat Rod is Robert Hall of Wilmer, Alabama. It's a 1949 Chevy - he made everything except the cab and it only took him 8 years to complete. He and his wife Majorie have a 1955 Chevy and have been involved with cars most of their lives (more of that car knowledge and experience we mentioned last month). They ran dirt tracks for 12 years and had lots of fun and good memories from those years. Thanks for bringing your Rat Rod to the breakfast and hope to see you again.
This truck has some history. It now belongs to Melvin and Kathryn Howard but once was in the stables of Ronnie Legg! Seems Ronnie custom built this 1936 Chevy with a 305 HO. He moved the cab back 12”, made the bed, lots of love and care went into this truck. Melvin and Kathryn have had this truck for only 3 weeks. So why would Ronnie let go of this beauty that he worked on for 2-3 years??? Seems Ronnie had an issue with the tie rod ends, I guess you could say an on-going issue with the tie rod ends, and one day he had had enough and made the call to Melvin. The rest is history. Love the truck Melvin & Kathryn (oh yeah and Ronnie)!
Running behind be there around 2 1:27am The rooster strives to do his best....because lord knows the rooster wants to go home to his family every night.....when there is a storm we are called to help restore power in an unfamiliar place and usually its crazy to get oriented where we work..so we have to make sure that we have a good solid plan before we start work. Flag, Tag & Ground the lines. Always test lines to make sure they are de energized first. Electricity travels 134,000 miles in a quarter second....a quarter second think about that!!!! The earth is roughly 20,000 miles around the earth. So in a quarter of a second electricity can go around the earth almost 7 times,....anyway folks it’s dangerous and it don’t care who you are, it will kill you! So please be patient with all the workers out there restoring power, they are there to help! Including the rooster as I write this I am in Georgia working and will be headed to Florida in the next day or so... Prayers sent thank you On a lighter note the rooster has the new project in the garage and will be prepping and stripping all the underneath out over the next month or so..its gonna’ be badassery!!! My completion date is February 1st. But I will not be unveiling until Atomic Blast 2018..it will be epic rooster style ratrod/burnout car/ madmax!!!!!! Jimbo, Strange and interesting facts about the USA #1 In more than half of all states in the United States of America, the highest paid public employee in the state is a football coach . #2 It costs the U.S. government 1.8 cents to mint a penny and 9.4 cents to mint a nickel. #3 Almost half of all Americans (47 percent ) do not put a single penny out of their paychecks into savings. #4 Apple has more cash than the U.S. Treasury. #5 The state of Alaska is 429 times larger than the state of Rhode Island, but Rhode Island has a significantly larger population than Alaska does. #6 Alaska has a longer coastline than all of the other 49 U.S. states put together . #7 The city of Juneau, Alaska, is about 3,000 square miles in size. It is actually larger than the entire state of Delaware . #8 When LBJ's "War on Poverty" began, less than 10percent of all U.S. children were growing up in single parent households. Today, that number has skyrocketed to 33 percent. Why: the 'breadwinner' is Uncle Sam's welfare program. #9 In 1950, less than 5 percent of all babies in America were born to unmarried parents. Today, that number is over 40 percent . #10 The poverty rate for households that are led by a married couple is 6.8 percent . For households that are led by a female single parent, the poverty rate is 37.1 percent . #11 In 2013, women earned 60 percent of all bachelor's degrees that were awarded that year in the United States. #12 According to the CDC, 34.6 percent of all men in the U.S. are obese. #13 The average supermarket in the United States wastes about 3,000 lbs of food each year. Meanwhile, approximately 20 percent of the garbage that goes into our landfills is food. #14 According to one recent survey, 81 percent of Russians now have a negative view of the United States. That is much higher than at the end of the Cold War era. #15 Montana has three times as many cows as it does people. #16 The grizzly bear is the official state animal of California. But no grizzly bears have been seen there since 1922 . They are plentiful in Mississippi, Tennessee and other southern states, however. #17 One recent survey discovered that "a steady job " is the number one thing that American women are looking for in a husband, and discovered that 75 percent of women would have a serious problem dating an unemployed man. #18 According to a study conducted by economist Carl Benedict Frey and engineer Michael Osborne, up to 47 percent of the jobs in the United States could soon be lost to computers, robots and other forms of technology. #19 The only place in the United States where coffee is grown commercially is in Hawaii . #20 The original name of the city of Atlanta was "Terminus ". #21 The state with the most millionaires per capita is Maryland . #22 One survey of 50-year-old men in the U.S. found that only 12 percent of them said that they were "very happy". #23 The United States has 845 motor vehicles for every 1,000 people. #24 48 percent of all Americans do not have any emergency supplies in their homes what so ever. Even fewer have fire extinguishers. #25 There are three towns in the United States that have the name "Santa Claus ". #26 There is actually a town in Michigan called "Hell ". (I wonder how far down the road from Detroit that is?). Also one called 'Climax'. #27 If you have no debt and also have 10 dollars in your wallet ... you are wealthier than 25 percent of all Americans. #28 By the time an American child reaches the age of 18, that child will have seen approximately 40,000 murders on television. And now the summary.!. Once upon a time we were the most loved and most respected nation on the entire planet. If you look close enough, you can still see many of the things that once made this country a shining beacon to the rest of the world. This article includes some weird facts, some fun facts, but also some very troubling facts. If we are ever going to change course as a nation, we need to come to grips with just how far we have fallen. How much farther can we go?

Since January 2017 The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year.

I know the NSRA Nationals in Louisville have come and gone, but I just wanted to give some information on the show. This year was a amazing show with over 10,000 car registered. There is one gate with eight lanes and all come rolling in, what a sight to see. No I didn't win the giveaway car, but Rich Abbott of Shepherdsville,Ky. was the lucky winner. Floyd and I were able to the Frog Follies in Evansville,In. Since 1975, it is one of largest pre.49 street rod show.and swap meet in the Midwest. This year the swap meet vendors had over 600 spaces. We walked and walked and did not see all the vendors. The weather was cool and we needed a light jacket. This was a fun show and enjoyed it so much already booked our hotel.
Motorsports Magazine came with us to Louisville
Lots of areas to cover….

Since 1975, each August the E'ville Iron Street Rod Club has put on a rod run for street rod owners. It is held at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center in Evansville Indiana. At the first event we had 44 registered street rods. Since that time the Frog Follies has grown to average over 4000 street rods each year. The event became known as the Frog Follies after the club had a bull frog race at the first event. We've had entries from Alaska, Australia, Canada, and all 48 continental states over the years. Since 2010 we can boast that the Frog Follies "is THE largest PRE 49 Street Rod event anywhere in the world!"

A couple friends and a few subscribers at the Kalamazoo swap asked me the obvious question and tossed in an honest comment that drove me to this one. “Gee Scooter, are theses Ramblings stories actually true, really?”.. “YES!, they all are absolutely for real. I'd place my right hand on the biggie book. And swear to it.” And then the next questions seemed to be?... “Gee Scooter did you EVER do anything outside of messing with cars?” My answer. “Yes, I did many other things, trapping, snow skiing, hunting, fishing, baseball, too much fighting, and more as I'm about to dump on you all. Boating was big with both power and sail for me. OK. Lets get to it, even though its not a car story it is speed / hot rod related. The folks had a summer cottage since I was five years old at a three hundred eighty acre lake twenty miles from the house. My mom spent all of the summers there. I and dad came there if we didn't work too many hours at the dealership with him being the general manager / salesman and me being the lot boy. I had a sharp little two passenger 10' wooden racing style skiff with a 12 HP Sea King out board that would top out at twenty two MPH which was decent in the early 60's. My dad had a 15' Fiberglass Wagemaker with a 40 HP Johnson ES motor. To set up my story, it was a hot, dog day of summer, I have a day off from the dealership. After dad bought that Wagemaker, I began to use his boat to too much, teaching every gal or guy on the lake to ski. He was figuring maybe he'd help me spring for a 4 passenger larger ski towing boat so I could be using my boat and my gas money to fund my good times. So he went looking and got a deal on a nice 13' aluminum Aero Craft with a double deck and trailer but no motor. No biggie, I'll just fit my 12HP sea King on it, so I sold the wooden one easily to pay a bunch of the IOU to dad for the larger, roomier boat. I got it set up on there easily and it was a good set up except the damn boat was slower than when it was on my 10' skiff, because it was larger and heavier. It would tow skis but wasn't as much fun. Oh well poop happens, right…. Read on its gonna’ get gooder, (a Scooter slang word) quickly. My best friend Bill and I are sitting on the dock dangling our feet in the water fishing on a quiet day on the lake. Just like in a Norman Rockwell painting. Suddenly a light goes off in my hot rod head. Dads at work, my moms at Bill's moms cottage around the point out of site. Lets go kick the butt, (keepin it cleaner) of the fastest boat on the whole dog gone lake! That damn (oops sorry) 57 Chris Craft of the rich boys at the other end of the lake became our target. Bill asks me how in heck are we gonna’ be doing that with your 20 MPH boat? Dads boat would come close but still couldn't get the job done. Simple. We take dads bigger motor and slap in on the 13' / 22 HP max on the tag Aero Craft and it will just have to be stupid fast or maybe just plain stupid period. Read on. The 40 HP motor is heavier. I figured we'd both get hernias lifting it off the one boat and hanging it on the feeble transom of my littler aluminum boat. The steering, shifting, throttle cables and fittings will not adapt to the stuff that was on my boat. So I'd just have to set in the back seat and use leather gloves to grab the motor, the shift lever, the throttle handle and the previous mentioned levers. Bill has to be sitting on the bow with his feet dangling over the front end to keep it down so we can plane off to gain top speed. Plus we placed five cement blocks under the front deck to also help
keep the front end down. We were sure we'd then have a good chance to go take the big buck inboard Chris Craft and suck the varnish off it as we fly by it. We spot it with the two Ambrose (their last name) kids in it and go right after it in the bigger end of Rose Lake. A Scooter Quickie here? Ask me about the time one of them and I got into a fight about a year later when U see me. This can't be told in here its simply too “bloody bad” as the English would say old chap. Anyway, we are coming up on their tail, AKA stern really fast. They see or hear us and we hear them stab the throttle as the Chris raised up and put out a really large wake. We just dive over the wake as we are like fifteen feet behind and doing maybe 5 MPH faster than them! Yahoo! We're about to kick their hunk of green backs to the curb so to speak. As we top the closest wake to their stern we dive down from it and guess what? I see Bill and the nose of my hot rod boat acting like a submarine on maximum dive and he and the nose are deep in the water. That literally stopped us in about a boat length. Which has me about fifteen feet up in the air and the boat is flipping end over end. When I'm at the highest point by luck the boat had jammed so much of itself in the water it shoots me forward maybe thirty feet. I hit the water and stay down until I hear the boat slam completely over in the water and come to rest. I surface and begin looking for Bill to see if he's alive, as the darn Chris Craft speeds off with those two rich kids laughing their butts off at us. He was OK! I was OK ! The most that was worrying me was that my drivers license had gotten water soaked and maybe they'd not give me a new one. By luck we had crashed by the Anderson gas dock, so Mr. Anderson came right out in a small fishing boat and hauled my speed boat in to his boat house, he cleaned out the motor as we sat there in out wet clothes, and he got us running in no time. We took off back to my cottage and hung out and got to re figuring how to get the job done a different way. At supper when my dad got there I was in deep dew. His thing to do when he was livid at me was to let his glasses slide way down on his twice broken nose, from Western football team college days, and speak with his eyes glaring at you from over the top of the frame. He spoke and with that look it was more scary than if he had slapped me silly. I assume Mr. Anderson had called him, probably about the bill we ran up, before we even got back to the cottage with the boat. Anyway, I was told in no uncertain terms to not ( Insert any real bad word U can muster here) EVER!!!! remove any motors for any reason other than to work on them in the future. And Oh, by the way it would be nice to see a few dollars to help with the damn bill at Anderson's fuel dock son. Yup, that was not good but a couple of days later he did make the comment that at least in our massive stupidity we didn't get killed or hurt. And that was good. AKA “Speed Kills” almost... even in boats I guess. Or as Paul LeMatt… aka. Mr Kool of American Graffiti says, “remember, it takes 24,637 bolts to put a car together, but it only one nut to spread it all over the road! (or in Scooters case lake) Also don't drink and drive. Supporting Honor Flight The American veteran is one of our greatest treasures. Those men and women answered our nation’s call, especially at times of our greatest need. As a grateful country, it is our job to honor and thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice. Honor Flight is a group consisting of a volunteer organization dedicated to leaving an ever-lasting impact on these heroes. In the Spring of 2004, the WWII Memorial was dedicated and opened to the public in our Nation’s capital. Late the same year, a Doctor in Ohio named Earl Morse, asked one of his World War II veteran patients if he would like to fly out to D.C. free of charge to visit his memorial. The veteran broke down and cried. He told Earl that at his age he would probably never get to see his memorial any other way, and graciously accepted the offer. Earl posed the same question to another Vet a week later. He too cried and enthusiastically accepted the trip. It didn’t take long for Earl to realize that there were many veterans who would have the same reaction. At that point Earl Morse started asking for help from other pilots to make a dream become a reality. World War II veterans waited patiently for over 65 years for a memorial that recognizes their service and accomplishments. “Honor Flight “ is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing veterans with honor and closure. Donations provide transport for these veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit THEIR memorials. “Of all of the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation—and as a culturally diverse, free society. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day. Our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out.” (From the Honor Flight website) May 13, 2017 was the beginning of a Saturday night cruise-in at Lowe’s parking lot in Avon, Indiana, started by the Hale family. Funds are raised at this event and donated to “Honor Flight”. Bob Hale, Sr., Bob Hale, Jr., and Karen Hale, (the driving force) have taken on this noble and worthy cause to obtain donations to send veterans on this important excursion. Bob Hale, Sr. and his volunteers were so busy with the hot dog roasting and soft drink sales that we had little time to talk. Karen Hale takes care of the Facebook page and 50/50 raffle sales along with numerous other

duties. The 50/50 money is a donation to “Honor Flight”, and on more than one occasion the people who have won the 50/50 raffle have donated their half of the money back to the veterans. Bob Hale, Jr. is not without his share of duties. The cruise-in has grown to around 100 cars in attendance. The great thing about this event is that it is open to all cars. If you have a vehicle that you want to show off, you are welcome to come and join in the fun of this event. If you have it, someone wants to see it. There is no judging of the cars. There are no trophies. There is, however, a great arena provided for fellowship and car talk. I would like to add that women feel welcome here and attendance of females is high. The fun factor is stressed and acknowledged. Over the weeks of the cruise-in there have been a wide variety of cars including a Nash Statesman with reclining seats and the camping package, a converted bus, a Chevrolet Corvair station wagon, and many other cars of particular interest. Everyone in attendance enjoys learning about vehicles that are new to them and sharing stories as only motor vehicle enthusiasts can. It is great fun for everyone in attendance and the attendance is growing week by week. I must put in a thank you to Lowe’s for allowing the use of their parking lot and supporting this worthy cause. Here is the bottom line. This is an event that charges no entry fee to show your car, has delicious fire roasted hot dogs for one dollar, gives everyone a chance at a 50/50 raffle drawing, provides a great family atmosphere and opportunity for any vehicle to be displayed, is attended by wonderful people, hosted by a terrific family, and has raised thousands of dollars for “Honor Flight”. Can anyone do better than that? I think not. Congratulations Hale family on a job well done. The only sad note is that the cruising season in Indiana is coming to an end and so must this endeavor. We all look forward to next year and more cruise-ins at Lowe’s with an opportunity to support our veterans. “Honor Flight” is providing an opportunity for OUR Veterans to receive the honors they deserve. Blessings go out to them, and the people who support them. Uncle Ezra says: There are three kinds of people. People who make things happen, people who watch things happen, and people who say, “What happened?”

I received an invite from Doug Narby to attend the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) NOLA Region races at NOLA Motorsports Park on Saturday, September 9, 2017. The weather was beautiful, so my husband, Charlie, and I decided it was a great day to spend at the track. We took him up in his invitation.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with this place, you should check it out. It is in Avondale, Louisiana, a quick 20minute drive from downtown New Orleans. NOLA Motorsports Park has a lot to offer: professional and club racing; “supercar” rental (think Ferrari and Lamborghini); track rental; and garage rental. If you want to go a slightly different route, they also have kart racing, kart racing leagues, kart rental and kart track rental. Rental karts travel at speeds ranging from 20 to 75 mph. The kart track is also a venue for small displacement Helmets await riders. bikes and motorcycles on open track days. While we were there, not only was the kart track busy with rentals, but a race also was being run on a second kart track. Nearby, NODRFT cars were speeding around a third track, burning lots of rubber and screeching tires. Drifting, first popularized in Japan in the 1970s, is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, with loss of traction in the rear wheels or all tires, while maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner. Car drifting is caused when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, to such an extent that the front wheels are often pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (the car is turning left and the wheels are pointing right, or vice versa, also known as opposite lock or countersteering). In competition, drivers are judged on speed, angle, showmanship and line taken through a corner or set of corners. NASA racing, what we initially came to see, was happening on the 2.75 mile, FIA-certified, track. That track can be configured in four different layouts, the longest of which has 16 turns with great sightlines throughout. Racing School is held here once a year. Driver development training and education for everything from racing to autocross to skid pad exercises are conducted. Driver’s Education is presented in four levels and DE-1 is a sellout every time it is offered. In DE-1, you drive your own street car and an instructor is in the vehicle with you at all times. You are taught safety, first and foremost. Once the instructor is confident in your skill, you advance, participating in time trials, gaining experience and speed, while racing only against the clock. Instructors ride with you occasionally, or not at all, and passing other cars on the track is restricted to specific locations and speeds depending on your level of proficiency. Once all education is completed and you are deemed consistent in your handling of both the vehicle and the track, you must also meet various specifications to become licensed. Then, and only then, can you race against other drivers. I can boast that I have “done the track” at NOLA Motorsports because Bob Beasley, the Race Director for NASA NOLA Region, was kind enough to take me out for a spin and educate me on the best way to attack it while behind the wheel. Bob was terrific with me. I admitted that I know very little about racing so he kindly tutored me. He also gave us access to the control tower to watch the action from the best seats in the house. Bob told me that he raced for many years beginning in his 30s. He explained that this is a very expensive sport and it is not uncommon to have $150,000 in a car. If you add a trailer, tools, travel expenses, including hotels or a motor home, you can easily be in for $500K or more. This is not a sport for the feint of heart or light of pocket. Bob stopped racing a couple of years ago when he noticed his reflexes just weren’t as fast as they had been when he was younger. As Race Director, he emphasizes safety.

Karts lined up and ready to go.
A family enjoys a friendly competition.
NASA racing is done with street-legal cars with the drivers and mechanics getting everything they can from them. Looking around, I was surprised to see the variety of makes and models on the track. I expected cars like those in the Indy 500, but instead saw Mazdas, Volkswagens, Fords and Chevys.

I had the opportunity to speak with several drivers, including Alexis Hocevar and Ben Hocevar, father and son racers. Alexis had pole position in the first race I watched and went on to win against his son and the rest of the field by a time difference of only 0.557 seconds. Top speeds were estimated to be around 135 mph.
Dayton de la Houssay, only 14 years old, was also in that race – his very first. He had a late start in his Mazda Miata and even blew his engine. What a way to begin! Not to be deterred, he and his dad managed to borrow another driver’s car so he could continue to compete that afternoon.
Dayton de la Houssay, in the yellow Mazda Miata, overtaking another racer. Roger & Monica Koby were up in the control tower with us. They were spending the day in Avondale so Roger and their 16-year-old son, Sam, could race before rushing back to Mobile, Alabama that evening to secure their home in anticipation of a visit from Hurricane Irma. Monica said that she doesn’t worry about her husband or son when they are on the track. Roger owns two auto dealerships and that makes it easier for them to choose street legal cars for racing. Having that choice helps to ensure Sam is as safe as possible in a reliable machine. Keeping safety in mind, Sam did a ride-along with an instructor before his first race so he could be shown exactly how to properly drive the track before getting behind the wheel. Alexis Hocevar and his winning ride, a Super Unlimited.
An instructor driving with Sam Koby as a passenger to show him how it’s done. Al Copeland, Jr., son of the founder of the Popeye’s Chicken empire and owner of Copeland’s Restaurants, loves racing and going fast. Racing is undeniably in his Copeland blood. He started out in his younger days racing motocross. On the water, he later raced power boats with his father, Al Sr., who dreamed of breaking the world record in offshore racing. Al, Jr. still races Phenomenon, the boat of his father’s dreams that was under construction when Sr. passed away. Phenomenon is a 56 ft., 26,000+ lb., tunnel hull race boat powered by four turbines totaling 12,000 hp with estimated speed potential of 280 mph. On land, Al, Jr. is also NASA licensed for Time Trials which he runs in his Dodge Viper. He doesn’t race other drivers and said he isn’t sure of his fastest speed behind the wheel because the Viper doesn’t have a speedometer. Al thinks NASA is the safest racing he has ever done.

In the film Top Gun, "Maverick" Mitchell, tells his Radio Intercept Operator, “Goose” Bradshaw, “I feel the need - the need for speed.” Maverick didn’t just want to go fast, he needed to go fast. But Maverick was a hot shot, so he didn’t follow rules and, as a result, was reckless and unsafe. If you, too, “feel the need - the need for speed,” don’t be a Maverick. Fill that need responsibly and take a spin at NOLA Motorsports.

Our road to SEMA 2017 is finally here. Its been like waiting on Christmas for me. So excited to hit the ROAD TO SEMA this month. Heading out West over 1,800 miles from home. I'm honored to be apart of this amazing display of craftsmanship again this year. Seeing several of my friends show Stefanie Lea their works of art at SEMA is something that makes me feel like a proud mom. Just like I'm so proud to be part of the Rat Rod Build off. Seeing it come to full circle over the past year. Has taken a toll on a few of us, and that's just plan silly. Its taken blood, sweat and tears for all of us to make it this far. Busting knuckles and cracked hands from working in the shop late at night. Sweating deadlines and sponsorships to make it this far down the road.
Tears over the sudden death of a friend and Rat Rod Family member. Jason Grouix
Tears over the sudden death of a friend and Rat Rod Family member. When I met Jason I couldn't hardly understand anything he said. He had a thick accent and said Eh' a lot. lol Jason was from Canada with a Rat Rod. I was interested in his story... Jason Groulx, ended up winning The SEMA Rat Rod Build Off 2016, with his 1928 Dodge Sedan. I was on the front row to see a huge smile roll across his face as the crowd went wild over his victory. Finding out later that Jason along with Bryan Dagel, Patrick Wilson, Sam Hard and a few others I'm sure I'm missing, are the main reason the Rat Rod world has made it into SEMA. So, I'm proud to of called Jason a friend of mine. I'm sad that he will not be with us at this years build off or to see his own dreams come to life for years to come. Understanding the passion he had, the goals he set for this build off, along with being a Rat Rod Builder Knowing the momentum of this build off has and what it has grown into. Jason has left a platform for everyone to step up and push through to see this RAT ROD Build Off be all it will become. I tip my hat to you sir, I pray for healing and comfort for your family and may your rest peacefully my friend. Well Done! Like Jason and everyone I met in Vegas last year. We all just knew that now we are apart of this family, created in the parking lot of Circus Circus. We are all so excited and honored to see this build off set in motion and moving forward. As you all know I have been keeping an eye on the 3 teams in the ROAD TO SEMA 2017 Rat Rod Build off.
In loving memory of Jason Groulx August 25 On behalf of Jason's Mom: " We would like to take this time to thank everyone on behalf of Jason's family. We greatly appreciate all prayers, food, flowers, and cards from near and far. We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown to us through this dark time. Thanks' to all who helped in the search from friends of Jason to strangers who showed their love in helping to put closure to this tragedy. Also a special thanks' to the Sylvan Lake R.C.M.P. detachment, fire department and ambulance" God Bless you all.

Like Team Norseman from Red Deer, Canada. Running the roads in a 1941 Chevrolet Cab chopped 6' inch, sitting on top of a custom frame on air ride with a Dana 70 rear end pulling it all with a 5.9 Cummins Diesel, with a Allison transmission. Sounds like a beast! I met Ken & Dave Egilsson in 2016 while at SEMA. This father son team work together very well, the respect they have for each other speaks volume to me. Knowing the quality of work and craftsmanship they have shown me already I know we are in for a treat from these guys. Just like one of the two Team USA contenders. Being seen, heard, and noticed for what each team with Jeramie Rosencranz and Josh Ellsworth from Menomonie, has to offer. Wisconsin. Hitting the road to SEMA in a stretched 1955 Chevy Best of luck to all of the teams, the fabricators, artist and the COE Race Car Hauler, a nice 700hp Cummins, with a 6 speed driving force behind it all. Safe travels my friends.. Gods Speed!! Allison 1000 Transmission, and a Dana 80 rear end. I was able to XoXo stop by and see this build first hand. Along with a great visit I was also able to see other Rat Rods that was built at Flamin' 8 Speed Shop. I have to say not bad at all guys, keep up the great work. You can tell you have a passion for these types of builds. I can’t wait to hear the roar coming down the streets of Vegas again this year. Good Luck to each team, See you all in Nebraska. Yep, that's right this isn't just a build off that you show up at the SEMA gates with. Each of these teams will meet in Lincoln, Nebraska and make over a 1,300 mile run into Las Vegas, Nevada. In the Ratical Rods they have been working on for this years build off, making it truly THE ROAD TO SEMA after all. Proving they are built not bought, showing they are road worthy, and ready to face the big guys on the red carpet in Vegas. What should be a 3 day trip for all the members on each team. They have given themselves a grace day, just in case anyone runs into any issues. In that case they will all stick together as any Rat Rod family member would do, to get the issue fixed and back on THE ROAD TO SEMA!

Stefanie Lea So, I came across this interview with Chip Foose online the other day. Talking basically on how most school systems are really doing a disservice to our country. By not offering the auto mechanic classes to the students.... Who’s next? The next generation of car builders don't have the tools needed to succeed or the drive to do so. If so they are limited by resources and setting goals for other students to reach out past what they can offer, is a hope for all teachers. This is a little something Chip Chip Foose & Stefanie Lea 2016 Foose stated in the interview I read. It's interesting because kids today are in no hurry to get their license. In my day, you couldn't wait to get your license. Kids today don't ride bikes either. They're not riding their bikes to school. When we got on a bike-that was our first feeling of freedom. We got to turn the handlebars and pedal where we wanted to go. Today, parents drive their kids to school, take them to the store, take them to the movies, and bring them home. The biggest problem in the culture today is that they're taking shop classes out of schools. When we graduated we wanted to buy a '69 Camaro and fix it up. Today when kids graduate, they want to buy a 2017 Camaro. It's not about building something; it's about acquiring something…. After reading that statement I agreed with Mr. Foose 100%. Relating to this interview not only makes me upset, it also scared me. Reading that statement also make me feel hopeless towards what I already call a lost art. Who's next? Then I remembered this young gentlemen that I met at a few cursin's and car shows. Each time I would run into this kid, I always walked away feeling as if I was talking with an old soulful mature man. Someone that didn't act or talk like other 15 year olds I know. With his 70's inspired Mopar t-shirt on along with his work boots, I just knew this kids life was one that's on a mission. Hunter is one with this passion and drive within himself and I wasn't sure how to take this, so I asked him to write me a story on his life and what his passion is in life. Not like a homework assignment, but tell me about yourself. And this is what I got and I have to say it gave me hope, chill pumps an more respect for this young man then before: Tell Me I Can't One More Time The Hunter Mitchells story. It all started when I was thirteen. I started to really get into old cars and my dad had some friends he used to run around with who were big into cars. One night he took me over to a guys house and his name was Ron Kidd. This man had a bunch of cars and he took me for a ride in one of the fastest cars. I think it all started to go down hill when he punched it and felt for my first time what real speed was. At this point I had already been annoying my dad a lot about wanting a old car. So one day I found this old 65 Chevy truck with
26
OCTOBER 2017
a straight six and a three on the tree. I got really excited because dad had told me about learning to drive a three on the tree. The issue was I had no money like every other 13 year old. Me and this gentlemen talked a lot and he liked that I was into cars, so my dad and him made a deal. We got the truck and I learn how to drive it in the driveway and loved it. I was still wanting a car though and I was talking to everyone across the U.S.. See I was always into Dodges because I loved the Dukes of Hazzard. The only issue is I always felt like Dodge was untouchable, so I looked at many other cars and dreamed big. At about 13 or 14 we found out I had to have a kidney transplant so the idea of car got put on hold with everyone for awhile except me in dreams. We got through everything and still I was heavy into cars. I was always slightly down cause I was the odd kid out at school. I had no friends who were into cars or anything I was into. I also can remember having people tell me I'm never gonna find or be able to get a old car. Through the next year I still was looking at cars going to car shows and doing a lot with car guy friends. Still dreaming of my own car one day like a 69 dodge charger. Ron told me he knew a guy who knew another guy with a big block four speed, 1968 Charger. Of course I was excited cause Ron said we will get him to come out. We keep crossing paths and missing getting to meet, until It finally happened. One night while at a hot wheels race where I would also meet my best friend Justin Trammel. While hanging out and I hear this car pull in the parking lot and there it was, a ‘68 Dodge Charger! I immediately ran outside to meet this man! His name is Jay Donaldson but everyone called him Luther. As we talked I was full of excitement staring at this beauty. And then he hands me the keys and says crank it up. SO, I'm sitting here with a face of shock and I said are you for real? He said yeah, so I get in and crank it. I was so happy in that moment and time!! And it only got better when he took me for a ride in it! I was in love, as me and my new best friend Justin sat in his car all night. When Dad got there and hung his head cause he knew what just happened, now my dream was more alive then ever before.
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
So I wake up hunting for a Dodge the next morning, that afternoon I found a 1972 Dodge Dart and impulsively bought it. That evening me and dad went a hour and a half away to get this car and bring it home. I already had big plans for the dart and started going and finding and getting parts together on my wish list. I wanted a four speed bad, and this man named Eldon Morre made that happen. The only issue is dad felt like the dart wasn't iconic enough and was hopping I’d find something else. Well for awhile I wasn’t sure what to do, then I met one of the biggest Mopar fans Robert Allison. This man knows Mopars like the back of his hand, he is like a walking book on Mopar. He also was happy I was a kid into cars and took me under his wing and has shown me a lot and is still helping me. Now I'm 15 and my cousin is getting married in Nashville TN. On our way dad had seen a post on-line, this guy has a 1969 Notchback Barracuda, dad and I were both interested very quickly. This guy was from Kentucky and liked old Chevys and works at the Chevrolet plant. Were talking and he becomes interested in a trade for my truck.
Now most would jump on that immediately but I had reservations because it was something that I learned in and was my first old vehicle. In the end we traded and they brought it to our home in Alabama. I was in love with it more then any other thing I had. Right now we are still working on it and it is our goal to have it up and running soon. We have a V-8 and 4 speed swapping the car. It will have slots and side pipes because who doesn't love a 70's street machine look! The other day I went and got parts off a parts car and I actually got bit by a snake that taken up the car as a house! Yes I'm okay but it was my fault cause maybe I did mess with him a little! Me and dad set out on this journey as a father son project and I wouldn't trade anything that's happened for anything else! I am so happy to have made all the friends along this journey so far. All the things we have experienced and have yet to experience! I hope to get more young people into cars and I hope to continue to have updates on my car as we continue to get it back on the road! Thank you for taking the time to read this! Remember to stay groovy y’all ;) ………. Hunter After reading this and getting to know Hunter and his dad more this past year. What a great feeling to see we still have some hope
in our youth. Hunter has the passion, and drive it takes to be successful at anything. By the sounds of it Hunter isn't going to let us down and maybe I’ll get a chance to ride in the old Barracuda one day. Alright, Alright, Alright!! XoXo

New England Halloween Hot Spots By Candy Cocktail Made famous for the beginnings of the new world, with homes dating back over 330 years, New England is unique for its beauty as well as its historical relevance. As the birthplace of our great nation, several locations throughout the area are significant for history, yet also infamous for their eerie legends. Last October, my mother and I braved the colder climate for a fallage trip throughout the New England states. While my mom's top bucket list item was to finally see the leaves turn beautiful hues of yellow, orange and red, atop my bucket list was to see the spooky locations that made places such as Salem renowned around the world. Ever a fan of Halloween, scary movies, ghost tours and the all around creepy, I quickly did my research and created a list of must see places in haunted New England! This month, I am sharing my list (and photos) with all of you! Vermont is the ideal place for the cute country feel of fall. With numerous apple orchards to spend an afternoon sipping cider at and photo ops of the picturesque scenes of vintage white church steeples surrounded by trees of vibrant colors, they are images that have become synonymous with autumn. Because I am such a horror movie buff, I could not resist being in New York and not stopping by the most famous haunted house; the Amityville Horror House! Located in a beautiful, upscale neighborhood in Amityville, New York, the house that is home to one of the most notorious murders of all time, is located at 108 Ocean Avenue. The original address was 112 Ocean Avenue, but it was later changed for resale purposes. We simply drove by the house of infamy, but as soon as we did, the dog started barking. With no one around, she continued barking at the house even as we turned off the street. Some say it is not haunted, but I would beg to differ!
Dutch Church becomes the spot to hear a spirited and dramatically performed retelling of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Jonathan Kruk. We saw the stellar performance on Halloween night and I took a chance of an encounter with the headless horseman as we spent Halloween night in the legendary town. Fortunately, I made it thought the night without losing my head to the ghost.
Ever heard of the little legend of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman? Like many other popular tales, this story's origin is rooted in real places. The locations of the so-called true story can be found in the quaint towns of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, New York. The location of the "headless horseman" bridge as well as the original church from 1697, called the Old Dutch Church, can be visited. In October however, the Old

The Jonathan Corwin House, better known as The Witch House, is located at 310 1/2 Essex Street in Salem. The historic home is the only one still standing with direct ties to the Witch Trials of 1692. Jonathan Corwin was called upon to investigate the claims of diabolical activity when the surge of witch craft accusations arose in Salem and its neighboring communities and he served on the court that sent nineteen to the gallows. With original flooring to furniture, the remarkable home presents an interesting and historically accurate portrait of life during that time.
Similarly, Providence, Rhode Island is home to the Jack O'Lantern Spectacular at the Roger Williams Park Zoo. Thousands of intricately carved jack o'lanterns surround areas of different themes! With drinks, hot chocolate and various locally themed food, like lobster mac n' cheese, it was a very enjoyable evening!
One cannot simply mention haunted and New England without leaving out the most bewitching location of all, Salem, Massachusetts. I have saved the best for last! Dotted with creative stores and a well decorated city, from the Bewitched statue to residents' cleverly decorated yards, Salem is home to many thrills and chills at Halloween.

The 1692 Salem Witch Museum is an exceptionally well done, must see experience of what made Salem famous. It offers visitors a fun, visually detailed synopsis of what happened during the witch trials.
If you are a fan of the kooky or bone chilling, a stop by Count Orlok's Nightmare Gallery is a must-do! The monster museum features wax figurines of all your favorite Halloween and horror movie characters, including Pennywise and Winifred Sanderson from Hocus Pocus.
My favorite childhood Halloween movie (actually who am I kidding? It is still my favorite Halloween movie), Hocus Pocus, was filmed primarily in the Salem area. So if you are also a fan of the Sanderson Sisters, or your children or grandchildren are, Salem holds the backdrop for your very own Hocus Pocus experience.

MY GUIDE TO CRUISIN THE COAST It’s here, the most wonderful time of the year! You can feel it when you get up in the morning or late in the evening, cool weather…when you first feel it know that Cruisin The Coast is here! Welcome to the 21st annual Cruisin The Coast, such a special event. Hopefully this year will pass the 8,000 registered cars. We have been so close, so many years now, it’s time. So many people have gotten in to the classic car scene because of CTC and once in learned what a fun time you can have attending car events. The first 12 CTC events I attended I took pictures, hundreds of pictures and every year I would say I’ll have me one by next year. But I was working a couple of jobs, had two stock car tracks to announce on the weekends and a NASCAR radio show. When I retired from announcing stock cars after 30 years and also from the radio show, classic cars is where I went. I grew up with Hot Rods, my older brothers had them when I was a little kid and I idolized my brothers and their cars. Later as a teenager myself I started with a 1967 Mercury Cougar XR7 and later had a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro convertible, a 1971 Dodge Charger and enjoyed cruising the strip myself, a youth rite of passage. Before Cruisin The Coast officially starts, cruising starts with the Veterans on Keesler Air Force Base Saturday September 30. Cruisin Keesler is a unique car show open to all cruisers held in one of the most beautiful spots on the Coast, the harbor area on Back Bay Biloxi, with shade provided by 100 year old oak trees. Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show will be providing the music and Auto Zone the door prizes… plus they feed everybody! To pre-register and get base approval be sure and call today at (228) 377-3160. You must call ahead to ease your base access! Sunday October 1, I get up about 3 AM to get the Hot Rod Show trailer into position for the Official Kickoff Party for Cruisin The Coast, View The Cruise. View The Cruise has turned into to one of the best events during CTC! Literally hundreds and hundreds of classic cars and about 15,000 spectators. I won’t tell you what time you should get down there, but when I’m starting to setup about 4 am, the best, most choice parking spots are filling up. We’ll be playing the Hot Rod Show, they’ll be selling those $5 Mega 50/50 tickets for a huge jackpot, Auto Zone will provide the door prizes we’ll give away on Mega 50/50 and Hot Rod Show trivia. It is a remarkable car show with many choices of eating spots and water holes in downtown Gulfport. You have never seen Gulfport like you’ll see it, a mad house! Monday October 2nd Cruise Central opens at 11 am and you can register or pick up your packet if you are already registered. Keep in mind everyone has to get their packet, 8,000 or so, with that being said if you can go after lunch you might get in and out faster. The Long Beach Parade is the next event, it starts at 5:30, the first 600 registered cars to line up make the parade, the lineup is at 4 pm at Long Beach High. At 6 pm I am in front of the stage sitting in my folding chair for the Tip Tops, a 10 piece band out of Mobile that plays Motown complete with the horns. I love this band and to me their first set is the best! Tuesday October 3 you have some options…AutoCross begins at the Coast Coliseum 9 am to 5 pm and at 8 pm at the Island View Casino it’s the Flame-Throwing Competition. Wednesday October 4 you have to get up early and drive to downtown Biloxi for the Biloxi Block Party, it’s probably the largest single event during CTC because it happens the last day before the venues open up and the cars start spreading out to all the venues along the coast. I’ve always told people the crowd for CTC doubles every day of the event, the Biloxi Block Party is a fun event. Thursday October 5 you should have one thing on your mind… getting your registration card stamped at all the venues so you are

1955- 2017 Eddie Louis “Pop” Langlois eligible for the 40 drawings of $500 for registered cars. Thursday is your day, mainly because of traffic. If you wait until Friday or Saturday the traffic is so bad you may not get to them all to get them stamped. Try to get em all done Thursday or leave no more than one to do on Friday, maybe where you want to hang out on Friday. Thursday is also when The Hot Rod Show will begin playing at the MS Coast Coliseum for the CTC official Swap Meet. We’ll be there each day Thursday through Saturday, come by and say hi. Ocean Springs is a trip to drive through with your registered car. It has a pucker factor of 10 the first time you drive down through the sea of spectators, turn right when you get to Government Street to extend the adventure. Truly incredible, the people will be ten deep on each fender. Friday and Saturday you are on your own to cruise. Enjoy the many bands playing at each venue. Be sure to get the CTC guide and see where and when your favorite band is playing. It has gotten so crowded with regular cars on Hwy 90 that a lot of the cruisers are now parked due to overheating problems. You’ll see hundreds with their camps set up along Hwy 90 partying, cooking and just having a great time in all the craziness. Plenty of food is being cooked, that’s for sure. Sunday morning…you want to make sure your completed stamping card is turned in to Cruise Central (where you picked up your packet) by 9 am. Dennis Gage from the TV Show “My Classic Car” will be pulling those cards out for $500 each, there’s 40 drawings, you do not have to be present to win, they’ll mail you a check. Again, welcome to Cruisin The Coast, have a great time while you’re here, come back next year and turn on ten of your friends to this incredible event. You problem will be trying to explain it to anyone that has not been to this event. Good luck on that! Be sure and drop by the Hot Rod Show trailer and say hi.

Before I go I want to mention a great cruiser we lost on Monday 9/11. Eddie Louis “Pop” Langlois, he was only 61. Pop was a founding member of the Pointe Coupee Cruisers in New Roads, LA where I do the car show each spring. Pop owned the local NAPA Auto Parts store and was a big part of the New Road Spring Car Show held in spring Ech year. Even if you didn’t know Pop you may have known one of his cars. He won the 32 Highboy Roadster in 2004 when Cruisin The Coast gave it away as the raffle car. Pop attended all 20 of the CTC events and treasured that car, it still looks as good as the day he won it. …...Rhonda Combel is one of those rare few who still has her very first car – a 1966 Ford Mustang. Let me introduce you to Rhonda and her car. Rhonda’s parents, Arleen & Emile “Sonny” Danos, planned on giving her Arleen’s car for her 15th birthday. However, on a family trip from their home in Marrero, Louisiana to Baton Rouge within the year before her birthday, Rhonda spied a Ford Mustang for sale and told her dad how much she liked that car. She spoke of it quite a bit and her dad got the hint. Sonny drove to Baton Rouge to buy that car but someone had beaten him to it. Both Sonny and his father-in-law (Rhonda’s grandfather), Norman Becnel, had experience working on cars, so Sonny wasn’t deterred. Instead, he drove to a nearby junk yard in search of another Mustang. He found a faded out red one that had not yet been flattened. He knew it would need a lot of work to make it safe for his daughter, but he paid the $1,500 asking price and drove it back home to Marrero. The car made the trip just fine. Instead of going straight home, Sonny decided to stop to give the car a good cleaning first. He washed it down, cleaning both the outside and the engine. Apparently, this wasn’t such a good idea because the car refused to move from that spot. The engine was shot. He had the car towed home and the rehab began. After lots of hard work by Sonny and Norman, which included boring the engine to a 302, Rhonda received her now Oldsmobile Green 1966 Ford Mustang as a 15th birthday present in 1979. Because of its new color and Rhonda’s love of turtles, she named her Mustang “Tippy.” …………….If you are of the appropriate generation, you may remember the “Draw Tippy the Turtle” ads for Art Instruction Schools that were in many publications at the time.
While telling me about her mom and the recording her mom made of a long list of rules for her daughter for using the car, Rhonda started to cry. Her mom has since passed away and Rhonda’s emotions got the better of her. It’s wonderful that her memories of her mom are still vibrant and alive when she looks at, and thinks about, her car. As for that list of rules, Rhonda says she broke every one of them the first year and lost her car privileges for the summer after that first school year for going somewhere she shouldn’t have. Tippy was Rhonda’s every day car until 2003. Tippy’s travels, however, weren’t all on a smooth and easy road. During her second summer, Rhonda and her mom traded cars for the day so Rhonda could use a larger car for a planned outing with her friends. Her mom, stopped at a traffic light, was rear-ended and her
beautiful Tippy had her first damage. Being ever vigilant about his daughter’s safety, her dad insisted that the insurance company repair the car correctly, so her rear end was replaced. Apparently, there was a lot of negotiating with the insurance company to make those repairs to his standards, and her mom’s injuries from the accident miraculously healed after the car was finished.
On October 28, 1985, Hurricane Juan flooded Lafitte, Louisiana, where Rhonda was living with her now ex-husband. The insurance company had the car towed away and “totaled” Tippy, but Rhonda refused to give up her car. Her dad drove around to every tow truck storage lot in the area and finally located Tippy situated in the back corner of a lot literally stacked with damaged cars. Sonny climbed the locked fence to verify it was her car and made arrangements to buy her back from the insurance company for $900. Unfortunately, Tippy suffered not only the damage from the flood waters, but the towing company or its employees stripped her of all her original details, like the radio. But Tippy came home and Sonny went to work again. In 2001, Tippy started to show her age and began giving Rhonda trouble. She knew her brakes weren’t working properly and that she needed to add brake fluid to the car but, instead of doing it herself, she decided to take the fluid with her to work and ask one of the men there to do it for her. She tossed the fluid into the back seat and drove less than a mile to work. When she got there, the brakes were completely gone. Not knowing what to do, and not understanding hand signals from co-workers to kill the engine, she drove in circles for so long that the engine started to rev up. She finally came to a sudden stop by hitting an ice house on the property. Knowing that Tippy needed serious help, Rhonda’s parents recommended she bring the car to see their long-time friend, “Big John” Combel. John is the owner of Combel’s Customs Auto Collision Center in Marrero and has a reputation for doing terrific work. Rhonda entrusted her beloved Tippy to him. Tippy lost her Oldsmobile Green in this incarnation and was updated to her current shade of “Calypso Green.” Shortly after getting Tippy back from John, Rhonda got into her car and it couldn’t get her into reverse. She decided that she could push Tippy back and jump into her after clearing the garage. That didn’t work. Tippy’s tires were turned so, instead of going straight back out of the garage, she turned and promptly hit a tree in the dead center of her rear end. Tippy went back to John Combel. In 2008, Hurricane Ike came to visit and Tippy again took on flood water, but only about an inch this time. Because of her age, the insurance company once again totaled her. Rhonda, still insisting that she wanted her car, bought her back one more time and sent her again to John Combel – this time to have her carpeting replaced. When Rhonda finally got Tippy back a year later, John had done a total restoration on her. She was redone inside and out, including a 289 engine. When Rhonda asked him for a bill, he told her that her mother, who had just recently passed away, had taken care of it.

In 2009, Tippy was in her first Classic Car show at The West Jefferson Hospital Family Festival. John Combel, a sponsor of that event and Rhonda, now divorced, started dating shortly after that show. If you know John personally, you know that when it comes to Rhonda, he is always doing things to make her happy. One of the first romantic things John did for her was go through the flood damaged remnants of her house in Lafitte to find the original tape her mom had made for her with her car rules. He has since had that restored for her, too. Rhonda and John were married in 2012. In 2016, Rhonda and John entered Tippy and his 2010 Camaro in the final World of Wheels in New Orleans, fulfilling a dream Rhonda had for some time. Leaving that show Rhonda commented to John about how cool it would be to have a 2016 Mustang, too, so Tippy could have a twin 50 years later. John, always listening, heard her. For Christmas, 2016, John and Rhonda took a helicopter to the Saints football game in the Superdome. Upon returning to the heliport she found waiting in the hangar a red 2016 Mustang surrounded by red poinsettias and “snow.” A sign nearby read, “Under Construction – Major Transformation Coming Soon.”
Rhonda enjoyed driving her new red Mustang for only two weeks before John whisked it away to his body shop. She was showing only 83 miles at the time.
At Combel’s Customs, John and his staff went to work. They changed the motor to a V-8; changed the wheels, the paint, the airbags, even the front end. When they were done, she had a 2017 Shelby Cobra front end.
Rhonda Tippy and Tippy II were both featured in Wild Wheels this year. They are entered in car shows, parades and are displayed at events throughout the year.
Rhonda says that Tippy will be a flowerpot in her yard before she’d ever part with her. She and Tippy will be together until the very end. Something tells me she and John will be, too. ………. Lynne Lightfoot

M
y night began as any other normal weeknight. Come home, fix dinner, and play with the kids. I then had the thought that would ring painfully in my mind for the next few hours: 'Maybe I should pull the waxing kit out of the medicine cabinet.' So I headed to the site of my demise: the bathroom. It was one of those 'cold wax' kits. No melting a clump of hot wax, you just rub the strips together in your hand, they get warm and you peel them apart and press them to your leg (or wherever else) and you pull the hair right off. No mess, no fuss. How hard can it be? I mean, I'm not a genius, but I am mechanically inclined enough to figure this out. (YA THINK!?!) So I pull one of the thin strips out. Its two strips facing each other stuck together. Instead of rubbing them together, my genius kicks in so I get out the hair dryer and heat it to 1000 degrees. ('Cold wax,' yeah...right!) I lay the strip across my thigh. Hold the skin around it tight and pull. It works! OK, so it wasn't the best feeling, but it wasn't too bad. I can do this! Hair removal no longer eludes me! I am She-rah, fighter of all wayward body hair and maker of smooth skin extraordinaire. With my next wax strip I move north after checking on the kids, I sneak back into the bathroom, for the ultimate hair fighting championship. I drop my panties and place one foot on the toilet. Using the same procedure, I apply the wax strip across the right side of my bikini line, covering the right half of my hoo-ha and stretching down to the inside of my butt cheek (it was a long strip) .. I inhale deeply and brace myself...RRRRIIIPPP!!!! I'm blind!!! Blinded from pain!!!!....OH MY GAWD!!!!!!!!! Vision returning, I notice that I've only managed to pull off half the strip. CRAP! Another deep breath and RIPP! Everything is spinning and spotted. I think I may pass out...must stay conscious...must stay conscious. Do I hear crashing drums??? Breathe, breathe...OK, back to normal. I want to see my trophy - a wax covered strip, the one that has caused me so much pain, with my hairy pelt sticking to it. I want to revel in the glory that is my triumph over body hair. I hold up the strip! There's no hair on it. Where is the hair??? WHERE IS THE WAX??? Slowly I ease my head down, foot still perched on the toilet. I see the hair. The hair that should be on the strip...it's not! I touch. .. I am touching wax!! I run my fingers over the most sensitive part of my body, which is now covered in cold wax and matted hair. Then I make the next BIG mistake...remember my foot is still propped upon the toilet? I know I need to do something. So I put my foot down. Sealed shut! My butt is sealed shut. Sealed shut! I penguin walk around the bathroom trying to figure out what to do and think to myself 'Please don't let me get the urge to poop. My head may pop off!' What can I do to melt the wax? Hot water!! Hot water melts wax!! I'll run the hottest water I can stand into the bathtub, get in, immerse the wax-covered bits and the wax should melt and I can gently wipe it off, right??? *WRONG!!!!!!!* I get in the tub - the water is slightly hotter than that used to torture prisoners of war or sterilize surgical equipment - I sit. Now, the only thing worse than having your nether regions glued together, is having them glued together and then glued to the bottom of the tub...in scalding hot water. Which, by the way, doesn't melt cold wax. So, now I'm stuck to the bottom of the tub as though I had cemented myself to the porcelain!! God bless the man who had convinced me a few months ago to have a phone put in the bathroom!!!!! I call my friend, thinking surely she has waxed before and has some secret of how to get me undone. It's a very good conversation starter 'So, my butt and hoo-ha are glued together to the bottom of the tub!' There is a slight pause. She doesn't know any secret tricks for removal but she does try to hide her laughter from me. She wants to know exactly where the wax is located, 'Are we talking cheeks or hole or hoo-ha?' She's laughing out loud by now...I can hear her. I give her the rundown and she suggests I call the number on the side of the box. YEAH!!!!! Right!! I should be the joke of someone else's night. While we go through various solutions. I resort to trying to scrape the wax off with a razor. Nothing feels better than to have your girlie goodies covered
in hot wax, glued shut, stuck to the tub in super hot water and then dryshaving the sticky wax off!! By now the brain is not working, dignity has taken a major hike and I'm pretty sure I'm going to need Post-Traumatic Stress counseling for this event. My friend is still talking with me when I finally see my saving grace....the lotion they give you to remove the excess wax. What do I really have to lose at this point? I rub some on and ... OH MY GAWD!!!!!!! The scream probably woke the kids and scared the dickens out of my friend. Its sooo painful, but I really don't care. 'IT WORKS!! It works!!' I get a hearty congratulation from my friend and she hangs up. I successfully remove the remainder of the wax and then notice to my grief and despair...? THE HAIR IS STILL HERE.......ALL OF IT! So I recklessly shave it off. Heck, I'm numb by now. Nothing hurts. I could have amputated my own leg at this point. Next week I'm going to try hair color......

Generation Sportster How A Harley Revolutionized The Market September 13, 2017 Posted by CCW http://collectorscarworld.com/author/jr/ By the late-1950s, demand had grown in the American market for a middleweight motorcycle with outstanding capability and versatility. With British bikes surging in popularity, Harley-Davidson countered. For 1957 it offered the XL Sportster, which many consider the first superbike and finest street motorcycle ever built. In fact, the Sportster has been in constant production for 60 years, with six models in Harley’s current lineup. The Sportster’s introduction coincided with the appointment of new Vice President of Engineering William J. Harley, son of company cofounder William S. Harley. A University of Michigan engineering graduate, the younger Harley had already served 23 years in the company and displayed the vision to move H-D into a new era. Harley-Davidson had long made middleweight bikes, as exemplified by the 1929 D-series, which used a 742-cc flathead V-twin. The 1952 Kseries had an advanced chassis and suspension but used an 888-cc flathead that struggled to match performance of British bikes’ overhead-valve 650cc parallel twins.
The K-series provided the basis for the Sportster, and the new bike brought with it a new overhead-valve engine. For $1,103—a $78 increase over the KH—the ’57 Sportster flaunted a stripped-down look on a compact 57-inch wheelbase. It emphasized the new 45-degree V-twin. In a nice flourish, the Sportster name was embossed on the bottom case. Cylinder barrels and heads of the new 883-cc twin were of cast iron, earning the nickname Ironhead. Bore and stroke were 3 x 3 3/16 inches. A single-lobe cam operated each valve. The compression ratio was 7.5:1. Kicking the twin to life with fire coming from an ignition magneto produced a husky bellow and 40 horsepower at 5,500 rpm. Weighing about 500 pounds, the Sportster joined the fray with Triumphs and Nortons. Around 2,000 were sold. The next year, the Sportster lineup added models and potency. The XLH had a higher-compression engine, while the XLCH offered newfound potential in track and trials events. This “Competition Hot” model had staggered dual pipes, peanut tank, and bobbed rear fender. In 1959, it sold for $1,285. How formidable was the Sportster? Cycle World reported 122 mph as its top speed in 1962, but many wondered if that test was dubious. Nevertheless, the magazine concluded the XLCH “is clearly the fastest mass-produced motorcycle we have had.”
From inception, the well-specified Sportster lineup put all the basics in place. There remained plenty of room for improvement though, and over the next decades the bike saw many upgrades. As British rides went away and Japanese ones provided fresh and formidable competition, the Sportster incorporated important changes and features. There would be electric start, left-foot shifting, and a five-speed gearbox. Electronic ignition and fuel-injection were technological improvements, and rubberisolation engine mounts helped to quell vibration. Belt drive was quieter than the original chain and needed little attention. Harley-Davidson also experimented with different styling, so the Sportster XLCH donned a long dual saddle and white grips in 1964. The ’67 SLH tourer had a white saddle and passenger backrest, as well as a gaudy headlamp nacelle. Even as the Japanese multi-cylinder revolution began, Sportster sales kept pace in the expanding market, soaring to 8,500 units in 1970. Harley remained competitive on the track, and Evel Knievel soared from ramp to ramp on an XR 750, giving the brand a cool factor (until the daredevil and a couple of henchmen assaulted a promoter with a baseball bat). The big shocker was the 1977 XLCR 1000, a café racer from the land of bratwurst and Pabst. This Sportster was so advanced it had siamesed pipes, frontand rear-disc brakes, and a bubble fairing. Curious but not popular. Sportster buyers wanted the all-American engine-with-two-wheels look, and the XLCR went away. There was also a limited-run Confederate Edition, which today seems like a terrible idea. Even with t he occasional flop, Harley began selling more than 20,000 Sportsters annually.
As always, the quest continued for more power. In 1972, engine displacement increased to 997 cc. Then in 1986, after a period of mismanagement, Harley brought out its Evolution engine in medium (883 -cc) and large (1,200-cc, eventually) displacements for the Sportster. Extensive use of aluminum resulted in a lighter, tighter, and more durable engine with better heat dissipation. Harley took another risk in 1988 with the Sportster XLH 883 Hugger, a low-seat variant meant to entice new riders who may have previously been rear passengers. And the company explored trends and pushed the limits, as seen in such creations as the XR 1000, a racy streetbike, and the XL 1200N Nightster, with rat-rod styling. Today’s Sportsters comprise six models, ranging from the XL 1200T SuperLow touring bike to the XL 1200X Forty-Eight, which Harley calls an “urban brawler.” Entering its seventh decade, the Sportster appeals more than ever, and that just shows the soundness of the original superbike’s formula.

Stayin’ Safe: The Dirt on Riding Unpaved Roads Eric Trow / June 2, 2016 Even a large touring bike can be at home on unpaved roads when proper technique is applied. It’s the end of the road for many. But it’s just the beginning for those who are comfortable and confident when the pavement ends and gravel or hard-packed dirt begins. Why is it we get so uptight when things get loose underfoot (or under tire, as it were)? Because things feel a little weird and unfamiliar on dirt. The motorcycle moves around more beneath us on unpaved surfaces, the front wheel seems to wander and the handlebars come alive in our sweaty palms. In reality, while things feel loose, there is typically more traction on hard-packed dirt than riders expect. All of that movement the machine is doing? It’s just the bike’s natural way of finding a suitable path forward. That said, there are a few techniques unique to riding unpaved roads vs. a hard, smooth road surface. Stay loose. Avoid fighting the bike’s natural tendency to meander on the uneven surface and, instead, loosen your grip and let the motorcycle find its way. Remember, the bike doesn’t want to fall any more than you do; it wants to keep moving ahead and staying upright. Keep your eyes up, looking well ahead and the bike will follow. Shift your weight from your seat to your feet. With arches on the pegs (or boots flat on the floorboards) and knees against the tank, steer with your lower body and less with your hands. Unlike riding on pavement, you’ll want to keep your body upright, allowing the bike to lean beneath you in corners to maximize traction. While all of this may feel a bit awkward at first, you’ll soon become more comfortable and more confident as you discover just how well even a large motorcycle can navigate dry, unpaved surfaces. And the end of the pavement will be just the beginning of your next riding adventure. ridermagazine.com
Law of Mechanical Repair: After your hands become coated with grease your nose will begin to itch or you'll have to pee. Law of the Workshop: Any tool, when dropped, will roll to the least accessible corner. Law of probability: The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of the act. Law of the Telephone: When you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal. Law of the Alibi: If you tell the boss a flat tire made you late for work, the very next morning you will have a flat tire. Variation Law: If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will start to move faster than the one you are in now. (works every time) Bath Theorem: When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone rings. Law of Close Encounters: The probability of meeting someone you know increases when you are with someone you don't want to be seen with. Law of the Result: When you try to prove to someone that a machine won't work, it will. Law of Biomechanics: The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach. Theater Rule: At any event, people with seats furthest from the aisle, arrive last. Law of Coffee: As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something that lasts until the coffee is cold. Murphy's Law of Lockers: If there are only two people in a locker room, they will have adjacent lockers. This is also true of post office boxes. Law of Location: Wherever you go, There you are! Law of Logical Argument: Anything is possible if you don't know what you're talking about. Brown's Law: If the shoe fits, it's ugly. Oliver's Law: A closed mouth gathers no feet. Wilson's Law: As soon as you find a product you really like, they will stop making it. To calculate just how much sooner you could stop if you saved a second, use the conversion factor of 1 mph = 1.46 feet per second. So, if you were traveling at 55 mph, you are doing 81 feet per second. Learning to decrease your reaction time by habitually covering the brake could theoretically stop you from 55 mph about six or seven car lengths sooner. Likewise, if you were doing 35 mph, a second equals 51 feet saved in stopping distance, or about 4 cars lengths. If you were doing 80 mph, it would equal 117 feet per second, or more than a third of a football field. www.motorcycletrainingacademy.com
