Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Looks like the price of gas is going to stay on the high side of $3.00 and more likely to favor the $4.00 price tag in the near future. I traveled to a car show less then a hundred-fifty miles away and returned in time to catch a cruise-in the same night. (left show early as I didn’t want to drive home in the dark.) I spent $30 to fill-up before I left for the car show and $30 fill-up for the return trip from the car show. Then a $40 fill up after the Cruise-in. Gas for the day $100. Guess it would help if the ‘29 would get better gas mileage but it doesn't and as most of you who know me...I like to drive my car. I was speaking on the phone to a friend, who is expected to show up at a lot of the car shows, we talked about what the true cost of going to one day events may cost a person. Especially if you need to stay overnight. In his case and mine it was a 2 ½ hour drive to the show and of course the same on the return trip. That’s five hours of travel. Then the cost of the show say $20 $25 dollars. If you need to stay the night, so that you can stay for the whole show, you could add about $75 to your budget. So now the cost is up around $200 bucks not counting food, 50/50, t-shirt, etc. To say it may cost a driver close to $300 to attend a one day show isn’t that far fetched. So what’s my point? Turn Out!!! Already even before the car show season really kicks off, I’m hearing some people say; no I’m not goin’ it “wasn't a very good show...they were down x-number of cars” Now that may be the case about the number of cars that show up, but just because there isn’t 100 plus cars in the parking lot, it still could be a great show. I’ve been in a parking lot with five guys sitting on the fenders of their car and laughed till my sides hurt.
Besides the people who are putting on the show really feel the disappointment, don’t ya think?!! Don’t judge the show by the numbers…. go if you can.. My friend, (the guy from above) told me he is resorting to sending in his preregistration fee and calling to apologize because he won’t be able to attend. He sent in the money because he wanted to support their show... but financially was just unable to attend. He figures he saved some where between $75 and $300 just by not going. The week-end shows that are at hotels and motels, may get a little better turn out this year as show goers' are looking for the best use of time and money. The cost of putting on car shows are going up as well. Expectations of what the car show has to offer will sometimes help or deter the attendance. OK here’s some of the e-mail I get... Jimbo, Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to completely forget what that purpose was? Turns out, doors themselves are to blame for these strange memory lapses. Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have discovered that passing through a doorway triggers what's known as an event boundary in the mind, separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new locale. Thank goodness for studies like this. It's not our age, it's that damn door! Did I send this to you already? giff1500@ Jimbo, My inconclusive travel plans I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone. I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older. One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! I may have been in Continent, but I don't remember what country I was in. It's an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there. "Life is short. Smile while you still have your teeth." From one unstable person to another... I hope everyone is happy in your head - we're all doing pretty well in mine! From: Michael N. Jimbo: After skipping a year, the Antique Appreciation picnic is back on for August 3, 2013 from 8am to 4pm at Flint Creek Water Park in Wiggins to be sponsored by Red Creek Classic Club and Motorsports magazine. Our club has been asked for this event to come back, so here it is. If you have not been to this event, then you have missed a good one! There will be no judging or charge other than a $2.00 parking fee. The last show had visitors from Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas and all over Mississippi. This year it will be better than ever because we have a huge air conditioned pavilion right on the water's edge of the lake with huge shady oak trees. We will have plenty of room to sit inside and eat the hamburgers or hot dogs from the Red Creek Classic grill or just to sit and cool off. There will be plenty of parking under the big trees so your car can stay cool also. Everyone can just sit and visit and enjoy the cars and the company. That is what it's all about! You can bring your grand kids….. the younger car owners can bring their kids also because this event is very close to Water Town slide and the swimming area. This will be fun for everyone young and old. For more information, call Charlie at: (601) 528-1172 or Terry at (601) 528-1361. Put this one on your calendar folks. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the picnic. Charlie Farmer Red Creek Classic Car Club Till next month…

Hearts a' Fire Car Show Watch out boys! There's a new club in town, Hell on Heels! Hell on Heels is an all ladies car club consisting of women that share the same interest in the restoration of classics. These women do all the restoration on their vehicles themselves and they're not stopping there! They just kicked off the season by holding their First Annual Hearts a' Fire Car Show. The car show was a benefit for Jr Authement. The event was held in Gonzales, La on Feb 16, 2013. A breezy cool morning didn't stop their supporters from coming out to join in the activities. The girls had 137 registered vehicles from motorcycles, classic cars to newer customs out for their first event. Registered vehicles came all the way from Texas to New Orleans area to give the city of Gonzales quite a show. There were plenty of vendors on hand that featured some great local talent. A local artist Joel Cangiolosi of Full Blown Paint gave an airbrush demonstration and featured some of his works. Joel, also did the pinstriping on the ladies spectacular bowling pin awards. Great classic rockabilly music played while the crowd enjoyed food, crafts, and a variety of vehicles. In the afternoon they kicked off an array of contest. First up, a Tattoo Competition then a Classic 50's Pinup Competition. Crowning Rhonda Nelson Ms Hearts a' Fire 2013. From entrants to spectators the crowd left with a smile on there face and the anticipation for next years Hearts a' Fire Car Show! The writing of this column makes two full years of writing 17 FOREVER! This is the 24th column; I hope you've enjoyed it just half as much as I've enjoyed writing it. It has been truly a great ride! Not just the writing, but the adventure it has been going to car shows, experiencing them, seeing all the great cars, meeting all the cool folks and then sitting down and sharing it with you. The car culture is a great experience for us middle agers, giving us a chance to socialize with folks that grew up in our time, shared our cars, our music, our hangouts and our time. I'll say it again; we grew up and matured in the greatest years in history. The 50's, 60's and 70's were as good as it gets… the greatest cars, music and history that there has ever been. The off season has been a busy one. From the day Jimbo and I sat down and talked about doing music for the cruise-in to where we are with the Hot Rod Show today has been mindboggling. The Hot Rod Show has truly evolved. We first used someone else's sound system and music. Next we secured our first sound system and went about finding and buying the very best music for car shows. Hundreds and hundreds of dollars were spent on music which we have down now to a song here and there that we need to add. Next came putting the actual show together to make it the best car show music experience we could possibly produce. I feel the Hot Rod Show should make all those great memories we had during our life come rushing back. Over 100 hours were spent in the recording studio to put it all together. We wanted some of those old radio commercials you heard back in the day. We searched the Internet for weeks to build a library with over 50 old retro radio commercials. Remember “Speedy” the Alka-Seltzer character? How about the radio commercial for the 1957 Chevrolet? Or how about the Amour Hot Dogs jingle? We have 'em. We also wanted to get the audio for the biggest historical events of our time. Most of these were on TV film that had to be converted to audio tracks. From John F. Kennedy's famous “Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You” speech to the actual “Challenger Disaster” audio. We have captured and edited over 10 of those crucial events. I wanted a special voice to give image to the Hot Rod Show. A good friend of mine who does big act concert tour commercials was chosen for the job from Indianapolis, Indiana. A C-note later, as a favor and about 10 hours in the studio, the image liners were created for the show. Next we needed more power and sound, so we searched for and found a second sound system to be able to cover large car shows with both announcements and music. To link them together wirelessly was another task. I also wanted to be able to broadcast the Hot Rod Show over the radio in an area large enough to accommodate a large car show. I knew the old drive-in movie theaters used this technology after they moved away from the wired window units, so I researched it out. The purchase of a small FM transmitter enabled both the linking of the two sound systems and the broadcasting of the show to be accomplished. We needed a logo for the Hot Rod Show to put on business cards, T-shirts, magazine ads, etc., so after about five or six logos were done, changed and modified, we finally came up with our finished logo. We needed to also develop a display print ad we could run in the
8
MARCH 2013
magazine and other car show magazines to get the word out about the Hot Rod Show. That took a little time to get just the right words together…oh did I mention colors chosen for the logo and ad, that was another process. Next we needed a website where folks could find the Hot Rod Show, read about it and get contact information. It needed to work when someone Googled Terry Mason's Hot Rod Show. Once folks found the website, we also needed to be able for them to hear a demo of the show. So a demo tape had to be made--more time in the studio--and then get it actually on the website. The next issue we dealt with was many people wanting to buy Hot Rod Show music at the shows. Many folks came up and wanted to know if they could buy a CD of the show because they enjoyed it so much. So I thought that would be great if I could sell folks a copy of the show. Well I started researching how to make a CD, high quality labels, jewel cases and the like to make it happen. I spent about 30 hours in my recording studio laying down the pieces of the CD. Then I discovered the copyright process. That is a very confusing deal. I finally found a company in New York City that specialized in the copyright process. The Harry Fox Agency has it all down pat. You can research each song you want to put on a CD and then pay 9 cents per CD for the rights and do it all online. I had 20 songs picked out, did the research on each song, (there can be 10 different versions written of a song… you have to get the right one) got ready to check out on the website and then I hit the brick wall. The next screen asked me who was going to be singing these songs? What do you mean who will be singing the song…Elvis of course. That's when I learned something about copyrights. You can buy a song for 9 cents each, record it on a CD and sell it. But if you want Elvis' hit version of the song, you have to go directly to the record company and unless you have hundreds of thousands of dollars, they won't even talk to you about it, brick wall! But I still had the problem of getting folks good music they could buy at car shows. So I started looking on the Internet. Now I see why all these folks want music…it's hard to find. By time you find it, buy it and have it shipped to you, nobody would pay that kind of money for a CD. So I continued to look, make phone calls and even trips to see people until I finally found good music that car show people would want, and that I could have shipped to me at a price that car show people could afford. Now I have to buy thousands of dollars worth to get those prices, but hey that part of the project is now complete. As of this column, I have already booked two weekends in April, first in Dothan, AL at their big Tri-State Bar B Q Festival Car Show on April 13th and then the following weekend in Slidell, LA for the big 16th Annual Camellia City Car Show on April 20th. The Hot Rod Show is a good way for me to be able to afford to get to all these car shows and write about them here in 17 FOREVER. My wife always says I'm real good at taking fun and making work out of it. I guess it's part ADD, I have to be doing something and if I'm going to do something, I want to do it to the best of my ability. So I'll be talking, playing music and writing about the car shows and you'll have to see my wife Scotty to buy the music. Maybe I'm rubbing off on her. The first chance for you to hear what the Hot Rod Show is all about will be in March, the first Saturday night of the month at Edgewater Mall in Biloxi. When you hear the show, I wanted you to be able to appreciate all the effort that went into putting it together. It's my baby and I'm proud of it! I just always thought the people going to car shows and cruise-ins deserved more than they were getting, so, leave it to me to step it up a notch. Well you deserve it! You can tell its been a busy off season. I'm ready to go car showing… how about you? Get your Hot Rod out of the garage and enjoy that 17 FOREVER…Hot Rod state of mind, but watch out it can be addictive!

Jimbo: I had a chance to meet with the PINE BELT ANTIQUE CAR CLUB on February 2, 2013. This is a very unique group of people. They have a lot of old 20's and 30's cars and a lot of the people may be as old as their cars! That's special in its own way. The club strongly believes in driving a car like it was first driven--all stock, whether it be a Model A, Model T or flat head. We ate lunch at Farmer's Market Restaurant in Hattiesburg where the club had their monthly meeting. We then had about 15 cars, mine being the newest (1956) and drove about 15 miles to Mr. James McBeth's shop in the Providence community. Mr. James has a good size building that is filled from wall to wall with old "car nut" stuff. Anything you can think of including a 29 Ford ( I think), old Ford Falcon, 56 Ford, 55 Chevy, 57 Chevy and several 57's to be restored! This was a great way to spend the day and I want to thank the Pine Belt group, Mr. James and his wife for their hospitality. Charlie Farmer Red Creek Classics

Hey Jimbo The pic is of the car club I’m in called The Lead Kings. We were out at a show and seen the old service station so we decide to stop for some pics. I wish I owned the building, it’s such a kool place. As for what I have been up to. I have been working on the ‘36 a little and I have building my ‘32 roadster….the back yard find. It has been top secret in till now. I’m hoping to have it on the road some time soon. As for the ‘55 I’m getting the interior done in tuck and roll blue metal flake, also I put ‘55 Merc wagon tail lights on it. I will be driving it as well as 9 other cars from Canada to Autorama at Cobo Hall in Detriot in 6 weeks. As for the 55 Chevy it’s my dads project that he is working on. It’s turning out to be a real nice car. And as for the famous ‘53 I have been driving the wheels off of it and might be driving it to Bonneville this year if the roadster is not ready to go. If you want more on the roadster just let me know take care Ricky D. - Drive Safe

Rollin' with the Chevy's! A collaboration by: Kane McMellon & Neecy Cobb During a photo shoot last summer, my good friend Kane and I decided that it would be great to work on some projects together. Time is always an issue for us writers and photographers, so what better way to get our stuff out faster than to share the work? I should actually say, “share the fun!” because that is what this is all about for us. We LOVE what we do and we want to share our creativity with as many people as we can. In essence, we want to show the world all of the fabulous rides we photograph and all of the great people we have the honor of meeting. Enjoy! Truck driver, 24 year old Jeremy Hebert, from Larose La. Says when you open the back doors of his 1956 Chevy Suburban, you just might find a cargo of “Louisiana Whoop Ass.” You see Jeremy has some friends that love to mix it up!
Jeremy owns a bagged 1981 Chevy C10, and while hanging around the “Boneyard Kreepers” car club, they influenced him to buy something older, so Jeremy acquired this 1956 Chevy Suburban Powered by a 383 Stroker. This Suburban really will haul ass!!! The interior seats were made from old rocking chairs, has a oyster sack headliner, wood floors are made of #2 Pine. The seats and floors were burned and stained.
The Suburban was lowered using a dropped crossmember, with '77 Chevy upper & lower control arms with 2" drop spindles. The back was lowered using a 2-link with bags on bars and frame was C-notched. The air supply for the bags comes from a nitrogen bottle with SMC valves and 1/2" air lines. Jeremy is a member of “Addictive Behavior” truck club. After some thought, we decided to call up a few of the “Cajun Rollergirls” from Houma, Louisiana to pose with Jeremy's trucks. You see, there is nothing like having a bad ass chick standing next to a bad ass ride! Roller derby is back and coming on strong. The ladies of the high energy, full contact roller derby teams are very popular and so I asked the founder of the "Cajun Rollergirls" Tracie Lynn Nelton AKA "Olive Torture" what does it take for a girl to become a roller derby girl. "I don't know what it would take the girl next door, but perhaps I can tell you some of my experiences, like skating 15 miles across the town each day (intense military like training). Pushing oneself to a point unimaginable to most. having no fear on skates. I've seen broken ankles, wrists, concussions, I've seen those same girls heal and come right back too. Toughest girls on the planet! Takes more than hot pants and makeup to make a real roller girl. It's got to be in her heart.” For more information about the Cajun Rollergirls and their event schedule, go to: www.cajunrollergirls.com Photos and interview by: Kane McMellon of “Rats and Cats Kustoms,” words by Neecy Cobb of ”Neecy's Candids”

The Matinee Rocker: By: DD Thunders. January/February has been a fruitful time for Hollywood movie releases and good ole DD has been busy swiping my rewards card at my local theater chains. I have also caught a few good films at the new Cinema 5 in the Singing River Mall in Gautier Ms. I have been tearing tickets at that location for many years and glad to see first run movies in the newly renovated movie house. Locals show your support! I saw some of the best movies I have watched in a long time and can't wait to write about them. I was also disappointed in a few major releases with some great actors that fell short of my very forgiving, expectations (I'm a fan of all types of films and I'm not a film snob by any means). Having acted in a few good movies over the years has gave me a respect for anybody who puts out there version of celluloid art. Silver Lining Playbook was such a pleasure to watch I hated to leave till all the credits ran and the lights came on. Directed by David O Russell and also written by Russell (screenplay) and pulled from the novel written by Matthew Quick. This masterpiece, yes I said it, stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro and Jacki Weaver. That is a list of movers and shakers old and new. Bradley Cooper came to fame in the franchise. We all know what awesome work DeNiro has done and Jennifer Lawrence hit the big time with The Hunger Games and is Hollywood's new IT girl. Rated R with a running time of 2h 2m and falls into the drama/dark comedy genre which is one of my favs! This is a classic story of mental illness, real live and redemption. Not since One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest has a subject that tears families apart been depicted on the big screen….so honest, with a realistic view and a glimmer of hope. This new classic lets the humor of everyday life, albeit affected by mental illness, shine through naturally. The main character played by Mr. Cooper did and great job of not overplaying the character and gave room for Jennifer Lawrence to shine in her co-starring role. She really stood out in this star packed vehicle and will walk the Oscar red carpet with a good chance of bringing home a statue. A matter of fact, all these main actors I listed were nominated for Academy Awards. That shows you how good this movie really is. Watching DeNiro play Bradleys father was nothing less than perfect. Battling his own demons, funny stuff that I won’t spoil for my readers, shows his range as an actor in a supporting role. We know he has the chops and he doesn’t crowd the story. A true professional. Jacki Weaver, who plays DeNiros wife is a little less known but a great character actor who held her own and got the nod for best supporting actress. The only thing I could bring up is it has a touch of a Hollywood ending but who cares when this much honest, everyday craziness, tells a love story of acceptance and, I say i t again, redemption. I give this hour plus of awesome 9 out of 10 pics!! Number two on my love letter of new classics is the psychological thriller, Side Affects. Directed by Steve Soderbergh and written by Scott Z Burns. It has a run time of 1hr 46m. Rated R and stars Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Catherine Zeta Jones Douglas (thought I would toss in an extra name, three names or so last year) and Jude Law. I didn’t know much about this movie when I bought my ticket and crossed my fingers. Pretty soon the fingers uncrossed and the thumb pointed skyward or a two fingered victory salute Richard Nixon style or, you get the message. Two great films in a row, hell yes! There was not much advertisement in my area and like I mentioned earlier, so I couldn't believe my luck when this well written story of marriage, deceit and murder or is it?
Nothing is what it seems in the fast pace multi/side story thrill ride. Being a fan of Jude Law I wasn’t disappointed. He does a great job of a playing a slightly flawed Psychologist who tries to do good by his patients but his past catches up with him. I was interested in watching Channum Tatum tackle his co-starring role. He is likeable guy and a big star who has a female following and probably pulls a pretty big pay day. I might have a connection with the Mr. Mike dancing super-stud. I’ve heard that he lived on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, and I think he was a customer at one of my skate shops. Holler Channum, lets catch up! Living on the Third Coast most of my life has lead to many brushes with famous actors. Playing bit parts and being an extra in movie projects that are being shot down in the deep South has come fairly easy for me when have down time from my day job as a musician. Also being a pro skateboarder and renaissance business man has lead to a few personal contacts with a few big time real actors. Did I ever mention that I used to let Parker Posey, originally from Laurel Ms., stay in the extra bedroom in my home during my heyday in the skateboard business. Anyway, Tatum did his best and I give him props for taking a role that did not give him a ton of screen time. You will have to watch the movie to see what I am talking about. No spoiler alert from this column. Roony Mara and Catheren Zeta j.....(too many names for me to remember) deliver a complex but compelling and twisted tale of love and once again, deceit. Wow, I did not see this non Hollywood ending coming. Go see this film, maybe more than once. This is the type of story telling noir style that keeps you guessing. Jude Law really shined in this project and its good to see him back in a good film. I was gonna review Gangster Squad but it was not what I hoped it would be. It looked like they had a great idea and the star power but suffered from the age old problem of a script that is semi-flat or maybe a project that didn’t have the right director. All the star heavy period piece was not enough to take this it to the end zone. They had to punt. No shame in trying. I’m going to skip my reader suggested monthly list of personal favorite multiple viewed classics to add a new feature. That’s right, it's time to lay the law down on a megastar who still commands a top draw payday and cranks out a relentless number of films that makes your wonder how he does it. Everybody's favorite super scientologist and mega superstar Tom Cruise. This new section is called "The Tom Cruise Movie Beatdown" I'm a pretty positive person (you can tell by my overuse of !) and this is all in fun... But, come on Tom, really? I went and saw Jack Reacher. I am still stinging from the big musical he starred and sang in last year, uh....can’t remember the name of that piece of.....anyway, I hope I can get my 20 bucks back from this tired action flick. You know how much a large soda and mini chewable sweettarts can set you back. I have no idea why its fun to watch Bruce Willis in the same kind of action romp. Where he lives through crazy car accidents and never seems to never be wounded when 32 bad guys are rocking machine guns and are trained marksmen. And seems to have no real script to follow. Did Willis make a deal with the devil at crossroads? I don’t know and I will probably go see Die Hard 15. Keep trying Mr. Cruise. You will hit another home run. In all fairness, he rocked a couple of early 80's projects. The outsiders and Risky Business. You thought I was gonna say Top Gun, didn’t you. Thanks for all the people who have read this monthly column and thanks for all the suggestions. Next month I will include my all time favorite chick flick. It was the first major movie release that featured a punk rock soundtrack and lifestyle. That’s what they call a Teaser back in Tinseltown. See you in the top row.... Don't forget to support your local theaters, just remember to turn your phone off when you sit down in your local theater and never get caught sneaking in candy!!

Dirt Track Memories by: Larry Dunham There will come a time in your life when you have but memories! For all life is divided in to anticipation and memory, if we remember richly we must have lived richly. Not many have seen their name at the top of the page, and very few have taken the checkered flag. I get his “how may did you win” question from time to time. I always look at them and say “women or races”? 172 races, 7 wins in 12 years. Pineapple has a bunch of photo's of the 1940 Ford 2 DR in her column and thanks to my pal Bob Henry of Gretna, La., its tucked into my storage shed. So look it over guys in Pineapple's column. My two favorite tracks were Culver City, and Gardena, Calif. I had my share of “fastest qualifier” which paid $25.00. Then the four fastest were in the trophy dash of 3 or 4 laps depending on the track. The dash paid $15.00, $10.00, $5.00, & 0. So, you could pocket $25.00 to $40.00 on how you finished. It was good money to pick up maybe $80 to $150 a nite 2 or 3 nights a week. My older brother, “Big” Dunham worked for the telephone company (Ma Bell) and in 1952 was making $1.00 an hour for 44 hour week, ½ day on Saturday. This was nation wide, no one worked 40 hours a week then, he would take home $44.00 less 3% income tax. R.I.P. Marston. When racing for a living owner-drivers usually painted their wheels white, so as to be seen thru other drivers muddy goggles on a dirt track. The photo is my neighbor Willie Swift and business partner (Swift & Dunham Racing parts and equipment) when we were invited to participate in a SCCA “Hill Climb” at Willow Springs Calif. I set fast time and Willie was 2nd quick,
Here is a photo of Willie and I at Bakersfield, front row of the Trophy Dash. Notice Willie has the new “McHal” helmet (1953) and I'm still wearing the old “shock shell” with leather straps over the ears, while the new “McHal” helmet came down to the shoulders on each side. I didn't ever go to them even in the 60's I was still wearing the leather straps, why? You can't hear the engine with the new ones. When you run the mile in a midget and the straps come out at the end of the “chute” you know your over 100 miles per hour or more. One Saturday night Willie and I towed our cars over to Gardena, Calif. It was a ¼ mile track, and during the main Willie got hit in the rear, got his car into the fence and broke his right arm, Sunday, the day after the race, we took the chassis apart, jigged the frame, checked the rear axle in the lathe for straight then put her back together. Willie was running #22 and wanted to keep the car running to get “owner points”. He asked me to park my car and drive his at Berdoo the next Saturday night so the car would get points for the #22. It was a 100 lap race on Saturday nite, and lots of car points compared to the 30 lap races, so I said “O.K.” 100 laps, on the dirt, I set fast time (out of 45 cars) in the Swift #22 and Don Edmunds set 2nd quick in his own car, the #11. Normally fast cars in those days started in the rear, by qualifying times. On the 100 lap races sometimes they flipped a 10” wooden round disc (like an oversized coin) painted red on one side & black on the other. If red came up faster
cars started in back, if black, the reverse. It came up black we started in front. We came around, got the green flag and I jumped into the lead on the first turn. Going down the back stretch I'm smiling under my leather face mask. “When you get the lead, start smiling and relax”. Well down into the last corner I go (still the first lap, ¼ mile dirt you have the 1st turn and the last turn) I'm doing about 85 or 90 and this red #11 of Edmunds comes alongside in the high groove, breaks a radius rod, and spins in front of me. I'm upside down 5 times, I don't know which flip of the 5 this was taken, however, I didn't “come to” until 10 A.M. the next morning. The only time in 12 years I got upside down, and never lost an engine in 12 years. My good friend Rotten Red, I really wasn't watching him that close, didn't figure the something would break. I took a trip down to Huntsville, Alabama. Its 1950, and I'm driving for Joe Lucy in the #4 car that is on top at the beginning of this article. I'm 23 years old and think I walk on water, (if its frozen). Well, we (Eddie Moore, Bud Hoppe) and me pull into the track with Joe Lucy leading, towing with his brand new 50 Lincoln sedan with the Burbank trailer and the Kurtis Kraft #4 on the back. I'm following in my 46 Ford convertible and looking forward to getting unloaded, as we turn into the gate entrance of the pits there is this “Darlin” child standing there, and she looks at me and says “only race cars and tows” in pits. I grin, hang a left and park on the other side of the fence. When I get out, she says “are you running tonite” “I'm in the #4 car that just went in” I replied. “Where do we get paid after? I asked. “See me in that building over there” says she as she pointed to her right. Well, we didn't make much money that night. There is a brass bushing in the rear parallel torsion bars on each side, and apparently the right rear split and car couldn't corner for crap. I know girls you don't know what a torsion bar is, but I know you know what a cocktail bar is, and that's where I met Harriett (pit gate girl) after the race. She had changed to a white sweater and maroon skirt. I mentioned the sweater first, because when size 38 is trying to burst out of a sweater you never forget it! She smiled at me as I sat down next to her at the small table for 2, she was setting at. “This chair for someone?” I asked as I sat down. “You I hope” she replied. I ordered a coke, she was into a wine called “Blue Concord” and I ordered another for her. I was living in Memphis then, and she lived in Decatur, Al. “What are you driving” I asked. “ I came with my Dad, he never misses a race” she said smiling. Well, we left the place, got in my car, put the top up, and fired it up. “How far to Decatur” I asked, “Lets go to the park that's on the way” she said with the same grin. We get to the park, any good racer who traveled the circuit in those days had a good sleeping bag in back and a 12 gage shot gun with plenty of ammo. Two in a sleeping bag is tough, especially if a sweater has to come off. However, all worked out very well, but there sure were constrictions being in the sleeping bag. Later she said “my dad goes to his plant at 5 a.m. so we could go to my place O.K.?” Well to her place we went at 6 a.m. and it was a great ending to a lousy race the night before. Wayne if your reading this, you asked if I ever found La Rue's shoes, well Harriett loved her feet massaged (among other parts) and I didn't have to look for her shoes. (they were under the bed) In case you gals are new readers, La Rue was a Calif. girl, who liked to dance at the ballroom in Newport Beach and I would pick her up after the race in Long Beach (Calif.) she would slip off her shoes, put her feet in my lap and start moaning as I drove and rubbed them.

So I go up to the corner of Lakeshore Blvd and Lower Bay Rd, and on the South East corner is a black and white plastic sign that says Crickets “Pro Wrestling” every 2nd Sunday and last Sunday of each month. (I think its $8.00 admission) Also I have noted that the radio station 102.3 (which runs an ad with us) has a commercial for Crickets wrestling. All you readers, Bay St. Louis, Waveland, Kiln, and Diamondhead take note: Our advertisers have magazines each month that you take home, El Maguey, Dempsey’s, VFW Bay St. Louis, VFW Lakeshore, and Larry’s favorite “Good to Go” auto parts. If you wonder why it’s his favorite check the ad (full page) in the last 3 pages. Lakeshore Auto also has the magazines, they are located in the yellow pages. Larry says they do computer tune up and do a lot of hi performance work. Chris is the owner-operator who was owner-driver of a 2008 dragster. When you call in for a appointment you will get Melissa, she is also always at front office. She is always very friendly and helpful. As a gal I like the lobby. I’ve been in many lobby’s with Larry and usually not too clean, and are greasy looking, you walk in their lobby and they have nice couch, table, magazine, TV and coffee. It’s Wednesday and time to head for the Kiln. I hop into Precious (300zx) turn on my new tape of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar. I was at the VFW (in BSL) and a guy gave me this tape. He said I’m cleaning out my house and found these tapes and thought of you. I don’t remember him, (I’ll have to ask Bobby) but I love the tapes. As I get to the Kiln, I pass Steamers Restaurant (you locals all know Steamers) which is closed now. Due to the new flood rules they had to go up about ?? feet. So, they closed. I think they have taken over the bldg that was for sale next to them. I see no for sale sign and see construction work going on. I’ll keep you up to date. I stop at “Pops” Restaurant & Bar and drop some magazine off. It was around 1 p.m. and only 1 customer. They need to do some advertising. It’s a nice place. I then head to Dempsey’s (see Diana’s ad) It’s packed as usual. I drop off magazine off and have a glass of wine and wander over to her gift shop “Da Swamp Shack”. I love her home & lawn décor also her jewelry. I head back to Bay St. Louis because I wanted to check Miguel’s Mexican TO GO, on Hwy 90, across from Walmart. It’s a small place, and has walk up service. Pam the manager said they have a full menu and open 11 a.m-8 p.m. Closed Sundays. I then head for Blaize Ave./Depot District in Bay St. Louis, I wanted to check the new place going in. “LIL JOE’S” wholesale & retail. The owner Roy Dedeaux said about 2 months. This place is right next door to Beningos bar and on the other side of Beningos is The Zoo Bar. The Zoo has only been open 2 or 3 months. The center is now full, it must be jumping at night. They have Blaize Avenue Bar, Coaches Deli, Lil Joe’s, Beningo’s Bar, The Zoo Bar and a Liquor Store. They did have big block party last Saturday put on by GOAL. They had a big bandstand set up by the Silver Slipper and a silent auction and the place was packed. Blaize Bar was selling food, so was Lil Joe’s and I think Coaches. Watch next month for more of my old and new places!
It’s gloomy, raining, and I hope everyone had a happy Valentines Day. It was raining during Mardi Gras, every where! The VFW in Bay St. Louis (see their ad) opened at 12 noon because it was Mardi Gras Day. We thought we would go there first and then walk to the parade. It was cold and raining outside. So I told Larry, “why don’t we wait and catch the St. Paddy’s Day Parade, and catch cabbage, potatoes, carrots, and beads it surely will be warm by then”. When we had Aloha Shores Lounge in Gretna on St. Paddy’s Day we always had Corn Beef & Cabbage plus green beer. Remember Aloha Shores Min! (Larry’s granddaughter who lives in Texas) I did go to the Mardi Gras Parade on Sunday before Mardi Gras Day, which started in Bay St. Louis and ended in Waveland on Hwy 90. I hung out with Mary & John who hang out at Harold & Lillians in Clermont Harbor. Harold & Lillians had a float in the parade We caught a lot of beads so I didn’t mind missing the Mardi Gras Day Parade (Fat Tuesday) on Blaize in Bay St. Louis. I have to tell you this story. After the Parade we went to the VFW in Bay St. Louis. Star was behind the bar and had a Mardi Gras wig on. (which has strands of all the Mardi Gras colors) Beas come in and says “It’s about time you did something with that hair”. I just love this bar! I’m so cold right now so, lets talk about Hawaii: They have great parades and it’s usually in the middle 70’s. The parades are in Waikiki Beach on Kalakaua Ave. St. Condo’s, shops, hotels on one side and ocean and hotels on the other side. The coldest on record (in the last 100 years) Oahu was 59 degrees. I have three pictures I thought you would like. In 1945, Waikiki beachboy “Gene “Tarzan” Smith became the first man to have paddled a surfboard across all of the channels connecting the major Hawaiian Islands, Photo from the Hawaii State Archives. Second photo, Tom Blake, a Waikiki w a t e r m a n originally from Wisconsin, revolutionized surfboard design in 1926 when he accidentally invented the “ h o l l o w ” surfboard. Blake made all six of the boards shown here, The four at left are examples of the “hollow” board: the two at right are paddleboards. Photo courtesy of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum. Third photo in 1935, waterman-inventor Blake tested the first sailboard in water off Waikiki. From the Hawaii State Archives. No, these guys are not Hawaiian. Ok back to Mississippi: I just left Sams VFW in Lakeshore (see his ad) and Conway Twitty is still on the Juke Box #21 (Don’t call him a cowboy till you see him ride!) Another favorite of Larry’s & Thelma at Tiffen Room in Gulfport is “Statue of Fool” by Rickey Van Shelton or Dwight Yoakam. www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com 20 MARCH 2013

Hey Honey, What do you want for Christmas??? When Marilyn Burns of Pineville, La wanted something different for Christmas little did husband Jerry know just how different it would be… Marilyn wanted a car, not ‘just’ a car, but a car that had some caricature. Searching e-bay seemed like a likely place to look and then it happened. You might say VooDoo happened. Way up North in Illinois was the original VooDoo Larrys’ 52 Olds and it was for sale. Now this looked like just the car for Marilyn...least ways it wasn’t just a car. And the VooDoo Man would love it down here in true VooDoo country, Louisiana. Originally built by Larry Grobe it started out as a stock 1952 Olds 88. After chopping the top 5” in the front and 6” in the back, torching the front springs and installing air shock in the back, the total drop came in at 11” Then he installed a 50 Plymouth back window, a 1955 Caddy front bumper, ’54 frenched tail lights, shove a 403 power plant under the hood to make it roll. Did a bitchin roll & tuck interior, adorned the body with lots of tricked out kustom touches and maybe one of the wildest paint jobs you won’t forget. And then there’s the Flame Throwers.. the ol’ Skool kind.. Well I have to admit Marilyn and Jerry have one old skool Kustom car and the signatures on the dash are proof that some very well known builders agree. You can check out this true 50’s Kustom for yourself..March 15-17… get the kids, bring your camera to the Atomic Blast 2 at Gulfport Dragway. ….”VooDoo Man” will be there and maybe Marilyn and Jerry will light off those FLAME THROWERS www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com 24 MARCH 2013
The young lady in the photos is my daughter Tam, sorry boys she’s hitched to a great guy, Frank, who likes hot rods, fast bikes and loves my little girl.. I can say that, I brought her home when she was brand new. Tam has been around cars, trucks, choppers, road bikes, and anything goes fast most of her life. We used to race around in a little 59 MG when she was about three. She would stand up on my seat and steer yelling “Faster daddy FASTER” Today she is a nurse and works in a specialty field, has two grown boys of her own. When I asked her if she wanted to take a 2 hour ride to see some cars, she said “I’ll be ready”

Kal Smith: Behind the Paint and Pinstripe Photos/Story by: Tasha Loots To call a man beautiful may not be traditional but I find it very fitting for Kal Smith. Born in Metairie, Louisiana in 1956 had to have been a special day for Leon and Margie Smith. To hear Kal speak of his is upbringing and how deeply he treasures his family is beyond beautiful. In the summer of 1975 Kal shared he met the “Love of His”, Aline Masset. The two married in 1977 and have two children, Kaleen and Jonathan Smith. It was enlightening to here the love this father has for his children. Kal shared the one thing he is most proud of is his “beautiful” grandson Ryne and is awaiting the birth of his second grandchild. With a passion for his family I can only imagine Kal is a beautiful grandfather. At the young age of thirteen Kal was introduced to the fascinating art of pin striping and custom lettering. He began helping his Uncle Dixie Walters with race boats and his son Bobby Walters with motor bikes. Kal was

also inspired by the work of Joe Cartullo. Quite impressed with the work of these three Kal knew he wanted a life of a custom painter. Two other major mentors that lead Kal into the business of custom lettering and graphic designs were Raymond Pertuit and Jimmy Johnson. After attending Delgado Community College for three years Kal started his career as a sign painter. Initially, working as a trim carpenter and then in the family business as a boilermaker until he was able to work as a full time custom painter. Kal has always had a love for the beauty of cars and bikes whether original or custom. Kal's combined love for cars and talent with paint is no doubt what makes his work stand out. Kal has painted everything from signs to big rigs. Every piece is an amazing, eye catching and beautiful work of art. This is only a small sample of Kal's work. I was honored to sit down with him and to view some of the work he has done. Kal is a true legend in my eyes.
Years ago Kal started helping his good friend Walter Carter when he was the Show Chairman of the New Orleans World of Wheel Show. In May of 2011 Kal was approached by the World of Wheels and asked if he would take on Show Chairman. He was deeply honored and is determined to make it an outstanding show. This will be Kal's second year as the Show Chairman for the World of Wheels. With his determination and love for cars this year's New Orleans World of Wheels is one you can't miss! Paintbykal.com

Pecos Bill finds a Hard Outfit retold by S. E. Schlosser Well now, Texas jest became too tame for Pecos Bill once he killed off all the bad men, so he struck out for New Mexico, looking for a hard outfit. He asked an old trapper he met on the way where he could find a hard outfit, and the trapper directed Bill to a place where the fellers bit nails in half for fun. It sounded like a promisin' place to Bill, so he set off. But his durned fool hoss got its neck broke on the way, and Bill found himself afoot. Bill went a walkin' with his saddle on his back. Suddenly, he come face to face with a rattlesnake 'round about fifteen feet long and lookin' fer trouble. Now Bill wanted to be fair to the rattler, so he let it get in a few jabs before he beat the stuffin' out of it. Being a kind man, when the snake was beat, he picked it up, wrapped it around his neck and carried it along with him. They was a headin' through a narrow canyon when a cougar thought he'd have a bit of fun and jumped them. Bill never turned a hair. He jest put down his saddle and then whipped the tarnation out of the cougar. Hair flew everywhere, blocking the light sose the jackrabbits thought it was night and went to bed. Finally that cat were so beat he cried like a lost kitten and jest licked Bill's hand. So Bill saddles him up and they tear off across them hills like forked lightening. Whenever Bill wanted to calm that cougar down, he'd just give him a tap with the rattlesnake. They set such a pace that they soon rolled into the hard outfit the trapper'd told Bill about. Quick as a wink, Bill jumps off the cougar, helps himself to some beans and coffee, wipes his mouth with a prickly pear and turns to look at the toughs sittin' around the fire. "Who's the boss around here, anyhow?" he asks. "I was," said a big mountain of a feller about seven foot tall and wide, "but you are now, stranger!" I just love a story with a happy ending, don't you? : Rusty Two medical students were walking along the street when they saw an old man walking with his legs spread apart. He was stiff-legged and walking slowly. One student said to his friend: "I'm sure that poor old man has Peltry Syndrome. Those people walk just like that." The other student says: "No, I don't think so. The old man surely has Zovitzki Syndrome. He walks slowly and his legs are apart, just as we learned in class." Since they couldn't agree they decided to ask the old man. They approached him and one of the students said to him, "We're medical students and couldn't help but notice the way you walk, but we couldn't agree on the syndrome you might have. Could you tell us what it is?" The old man said, "I'll tell you, but first you tell me what you two fine medical students think." The first student said, "I think it's Peltry Syndrome." The old man said, "You thought - but you are wrong." The other student said, "I think you have Zovitzki Syndrome." The old man said, "You thought - but you are wrong." So they asked him, "Well, old timer, what do you have?" The old man said, "I thought it was GAS - but I was wrong, too!"

The Whistle Stop. What is a Whistle Stop, well the term was first use in 1925 and refers to a small station on a railroad line. The train wouldn't stop unless there was a flag or signal that a passenger wanted to get on the train. A lot of whistle stops had a place to get a quick bite to eat. This Whistle Stop was on the Gulf Ship Island Railroad. In its prime of the start of the 20th Century there was a saw mill or turpentine mill every 3 miles on the line. This Whistle Stop is in Wiggins and serves some good food. It stills sets next to the rail line. The thing about this Whistle Stop is on Friday and Saturday night you can get all you can eat catfish, shrimp or combined. Now if you are not into fish or shrimp they have salads, burgers, sandwiches, po-boys and other seafood plates along with the Whistle Stops country meals. You can get the ribs, country fried steak, pork chops, roast beef and hamburger steaks platters. You also have 8 sides to chose from. Seven of us from the Coast Cruizers went to Wiggins on the 9th of Feb for a dinner run. We had a good time. If you have a large party, call ahead and they will get you in faster by getting the tables setup for a big party. The hours are a little odd so here they are. Monday 10:30-2pm Tues-Thurs 10:30-8pm Friday 10:30-9PM Sat 11:00-2pm and 4:30-9pm Closed on Sunday Whistle Stop 127 Magnolia Drive Wiggins, MS Phone 601-528-5588
Man: Yes Lady: How much a day? Man: Three 6 packs Lady: How much do you pay per 6 pack Man: about $10.00 Lady: And how long have you been drinking? Man: 15 years Lady: So one 6 pack costs $10.00 and you have three 6 packs a day which puts your spending each month at $900. In one year, it would be $10,800 correct? Man: Correct Lady: If in 1 year you spend $10,800 not accounting for inflation, the past 15 years puts your spending at $162,000 correct? Man: Correct Lady: Do you know that if you hadn't drank, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 15 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari?

Roy Rogers 1-601-433-5561 royr1@bayspringstel.net What deep thinkers men are... I mowed the lawn today, and after doing so I sat down and had a cold beer. The day was really quite beautiful, and the drink facilitated some deep thinking on various topics. Finally I thought about an age old question: Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the nuts? Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the nuts. Well, after another beer, and some heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with the answer to that question. Getting kicked in the nuts is more painful than having a baby; and here is the reason for my conclusion. A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, "it might be nice to have another child." On the other hand, you never hear a guy say, "You know, I think I would like another kick in the nuts." I rest my case. Time for another beer. www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

By: Wise The Daytona sun was sinking fast like the torched springs of a ’58 Impala. Toes looking bewildered still reclining against the back of the ’53 Squire long-roof, was trying to convince himself the events that had lead up to being stranded several hundred miles from home, with little to no bread hadn’t really gone down like they had, but they had. The trio had been reduced to a duo with his friend and their fearless leader, Lucky, hauled away for wreckless driving. Kip, the other portion of the brain trust had already adjusted to the jam they were in by making time with a local honey sunning a few yards away. From his vantage point Toe’s somberly looked out on the blinding white beach, filled with family’s packing in a fun day of play. Lost in thought a tightly packed sand clod creamed him on his noggin, like a bug to a windshield. “Think fast”, shouted Kip snapping Toe’s back to reality. He was now doubled over spitting out sugar colored sand. “Quit joking around Kip!” He fired back. These were desperate times, and with narrowly escaping death by June-bug earlier starring death in the face had brought him to this point of understanding it was time to man-up and assume the leadership role. They duo was gonna need to devise a scheme to break ole Lucky out of the hooscow and he was ready. He fell to his knees stretched his finger out into the sand and began to draw up a plan. “Kip, how much dough did you bring with you on the trip?” Toes asked. Kip wasn’t even paying him any attention; his eye’s and focus were on a goddess rising from the surf in a teeny white bikini. He was dreaming he could be the James Bond to her Honey Ryder and they could stroll for shells in the moonlight later on. Her body language was screaming Dr. “No!” Kip wasn’t bright enough to pick up on her signals, nor was he receiving Toe’s instructions for their financial status either. Toe’s reached up grabbing him by the arm and pulled him down to the battle plan he’d been sketching out in the sand. “None, DaddyO, not a red cent man, now back off!” Scratching his head Toes wiped the plans steps 1-3 clean. The extent of his plans were: 1) Grab some grub 2) Find the jail 3) Pay Lucky’s tab at the station; now there was one obvious objective… get some dough. Both doors slammed shut on the wagon and with a turn of the key she rolled back up the ramp onto A1A. “So Toes, when do we go pick up Lucky?” asked Kip. “When we get some money, we need to get our hands on about a hundred beans Kip.” “Woah, we ain’t got that kinda dough man, we better call home and ask for some help.” “Nothing doing Kip, I ain’t hearing my folks lip over us having some fun, and if you go squealing to yours mine will be dialed in just the same so we ain’t calling no one, agreed? “Well then how we gonna come by that much bread so quick?” They rolled up to a store on the strip and for a brief moment sat silent looking at the store front. It was as if they were talking without saying a word. Each of them asking and answering their own questions in their heads. Could we pull it off? Are we willing to cross the line from respectable punks to outlaws… fugitives from justice? Could they do it, they turned looking at each other. Beads of sweat rolling from their brow, at the same time they said, let’s do this! Toes wanted to hear Kips plan first, “you first”, he said. Talking in a hushed voice as if the store owner was in the back seat, “well I figure we will walk in together, you’ll go to the front counter to keep’em busy, and I’ll see what I can stuff into my jacket.” Looking puzzled back at Kip, Toes asked how that would help with the cash flow, “what good is that plan? Are we supposed to take out a classified ad afterwards to fence the goods?” “Fence the goods”, Kip asked puzzled? “I’m thinking the best I could get down the aisle would be some chips and maybe a www.CoastCruizers.com

few bottles of soda, but that ought to hold us over till they set ole lucky free.” ”Kip”, Toes yelled out! “Are you crazed man?! We need money, not food you dope!” Who was he fooling, between the two of them neither had the brains to pull off a real heist. Toes fired off the 8-banger, pulling the stick down into reverse and slinging the front end around he pointing her back up A1A. Kip was beginning to understand the levity of the situation; they needed Lucky back to get things back to normal, at least to keep Toes from freakin out again. Kip thought out loud for a moment, Betty his old girlfriend, had moved to Tallahassee no more than six months ago she could loan them some money. “Tallahassee?!” Toes said objectively, “are you nuts? We are riding on maybe three-quarters a tank of fuel and you wanna drive almost four hours back East?” “You’re really bumming me out Toe-man.” Kip snapped back at him turning on the FoMoCo filling the cabin with the hum of the tubes over the speakers as it heated up. Just then, over the hum coming out of the speakers, as if fate was reaching out to slap Toes right upside his already knotted-up melon, there was the familiar tune of Freddy Cannon. They turned to each other both smillin and they began to sing in broken harmony, “She's my Tallahassee lassie, Yeah, my Tallahassee lassie, She's my Tallahassee lassie…Down in F-L-A.” “Stand on it Toes!” Away the dynamic duo rode in a flash of two tone thunder. It only took three horrible acapella renditions of Tallahassee Lassie for the empty bellies of our two highway crooners to get their attention. Though the optimism was riding high, the cash flow was still low so a heist on a smaller level than the store was devised. A small family orange grove was up on the right of the road, Kips plan was still fresh so there was no need to think much about it. In true train robber fashion Toes jumped the fence while Kip stayed with the car to keep watch for suspecting passers-by. From their performance, it was nothing short of good fortune they’d pulled away from the store job earlier. Had they gone through with it, it would have run something like this. Kip standing pants-less next to the car yelling at the top of his lungs into the grove… “Toes! Toes! Toes! I think some ones coming, hurry Toes! We’re gonna get caught man! You gotta hurry!” Toes yelling back…”Shut up you flake! You trying to get us busted?” Ten long loud minutes later Toes was hopping over the barbed wire fence with Kips pair of pants tied at the legs full of citrus. They made their get-a-way laughing and sucking down Florida’s golden nectar. It wasn’t long before the floor was riddled with orange peels and they hadn’t the intelligence to tie the pains they were now experiencing to over indulging in the citrus fruit on an empty stomach. They 72

merely acquainted the pains to the guilty conscience from ripping off an orange farmer. They vowed to pay them back when they became rich and famous race car drivers or surfers. Somewhere around Lake City, the car began to spit and sputter, Toes knew it was time to revisit their alter-outlawego’s and pull another heist to get some more fuel for the rest of the journey. He’d pulled down a side road and parked in some brush. The dimly lit porch from a farm house a few hundred yards down the road was looking like a Texaco station to Toes as he instructed Kip the “mouth of the south” to hang tight with the car. He was to tell anyone that should happen along he was just a weary traveler pulling off the main road for a snooze. Toes, veiled by the shadows of a pale moon lit night made his way into the open barn and around to the fuel cap on the ’38 Chevy farm truck. Siphoning was a rite of passage for any rural raised boy so it wasn’t long before every drop of gasoline from the truck had made its way into a milk urn and was ready for transport back to the wagon in the woods nearby. There was only one problem, the howling beagle had aroused suspicions and the screen door to the house
was being opened by a double barrel shotgun. Toes slunk under the frame of the old truck to hide in the shadows. The orange juice pulsing inside him managed to fire of a good brain cell, all at once he pulled a small rock from the ground and hurled it into the night air striking a pine cone which hit the ground just off the left of the farmers house and luckily away from his position in the barn. The farmers suspecting his faithful watch hound had treed a pole cat, retreated back inside latching the door behind him and turning out the porch light. Toes exhaled and barrowing a dolly he’d felt around to find, hoisted the urn and headed for the woods. His worries of Kip blowing his cover were unfounded since he’d lived up to his alibi and had fallen fast asleep in the passenger seat. Once they’d managed to fill the tank, they threw the dolly and urn in the back of the wagon and lurched back onto the highway and were headed the short distance down the road to get the scratch. At an all-night diner, Kip was able to get directions to
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
Betty’s house and before an unrespectable hour had struck, they were sitting in her driveway. Kip deciding he wanted to swoon her as best he could reach into a bag to retrieve his chosen pair of shoes. These were his pride and joy, a pair of hand crafted Italian shoes which came to such a sharp point it was said one could smash a bug backed into a twenty degree corner. Perhaps that was true when they were new, but that was then and this was now! Presently they were about eight years old and hand me downs from his fat cousin Sergio who had a foot two sizes larger than Kip. The extra room in the shoe combined with humid summers in the South had caused the rich Corinthian leather to draw up in the tips. In Kips mind they were still an expensive debonair article of clothing; to on lookers though they just looked like a medieval pair of court jester slipper minus the bells on the tip. Never the less Kip sauntered in the night air up to the door and to the shock and dismay of both returned empty handed a short while later. Toes wanted to know what he’d said and made out that Kips less than urgent version went something like; they were on their way back to Daytona and needed some cash. “I wanted to sound adventurous and exciting, Betty’s still a hottie and we may end up back together” Toes decided despite his average sneaks he’d walk back up to the door and try a urgent approach and just ten minutes later emerged with a hundred and fifty dollars cash, an entire years’ worth of savings to a eighteen year old girl. He’d made her a promise to pay her back within 72 hours. Back out on the open road some where’s around two or three in the morning, the boys finally ran out of both gas and steam. They’d managed to roll the Squire right up in front of a set of Ethyl pumps. At around five o’clock the station attendant wrapped on the window and awoke the two wanting to know if they’d like a fill up. Knowing they’d needed to hold onto all the green for Lucky’s bail, they said they’d make the attendant an offer he couldn’t refuse. Dragging the heisted milk urn from the back of the wagon and filling it full of hot oranges, they pitched the swap for a tank full of Ethyl. The attendant just laughed, “You two genus’s look around”, he said as far as the eye can see there are citrus groves. “Ice to an Eskimo fella’s” he jokingly nodded. “I tell you what I’ll do though, dump the oranges back into your heap and if you’ll let me have that milk urn and dolly, you can have all your fuel your tank will hold?” Before the sun could even top the Daytona courthouse roof, Toes and Kip with lips swollen from siphoning fuel and eating a sole diet of citrus for the last eighteen hours where
sitting in front, anticipating the thankful look on their friend’s face as they were about to spring him from the big house. Toes mustered up all the energy he could and bolted up the front steps and through the front door. With an aching belly and swollen lips, Toes barely speak coherently said, “ve’re cheer do pay er fwen’s bail.” The clerk thought for a second that poor Toes was hair lipped. “Son” the clerk said, “are you wanting to bail someone out?” Again through cracked citrus dried lips toes, uttered “Jes!” “Their name ” the clerk reluctantly replied? A few minutes later Toes was walking out the door and down the steps to Kip sitting in the passenger seat, With the same incoherent disabled lips Kip said to him, “Where’s Lucky?” Toes just cracked the door opened and fired up the wagon in silence. Pulling back out they drove a short distance two three blocks down the road and pulled into a Waffle House parking lot. Kip again now insistent with cracked swollen lip vernacular said, “Toes, where’s Lucky?!!!” Looking forward with a blank stare, in the window of the restaurant at the bar was Lucky, eating a steak and eggs, drinking a cup of joe and flirting with the waitress. Back at the Courthouse, Lucky had called home to their parents explaining what’d happen. He had money wired to him, made bail and asked to be dropped off at the Waffle House down the street to grab a bite to eat. Lucky had explained to the clerk at the Courthouse, “You Never Can Tell, but if my buddies happen to show up let ‘em know where I’m at.
