Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine God will not allow things to happen that won’t somehow move you toward your destiny. He can see things that we can’t see. He knows the end from the beginning. There are times it looks like God is taking us the wrong way. We were about to pay our car off and the flood hits, we have to start all over. Somebody spreads rumors and keeps you from a promotion. You thought you met the person of your dreams, but they had a change of heart and it didn’t work out. We think, “God, where were You? Why didn’t You stop this from happening? God, You could have stopped the flood. You could have kept me from that rejection. You could have caused them to stay.” What we can’t see is the disappointments, the betrayals, the bad breaks are all a part of God’s plan. We don’t like it, it’s uncomfortable, but without them, we wouldn’t reach our destiny.. … Joel Osteen

Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Here it is February already and the Christmas / New Years celebrations are fast drifting into a memory. But fear not my romantic friends, this is your month to show your Valentine you remembered…their favorite candy. Candy seems to be the go to treat for every holiday. Mardi Gras is upon us so you better stock up.. We don’t have to put our cars away for the winter here on the Gulf Coast and there is always someplace cruise to...I think the best time to visit the Mississippi Gulf Coast is from February to May when the weather is comfortably cool and the celebrations are in full swing. Car shows will fill every weekend Feb, Mar, April & May, and you will have to pick and choose what to do and where to go. This months cover photo is from M&M Kustoms in Grenada, MS. Lee Taylor captured a picture some of us old hot rodders think about most of the time. Hotrods, bikes and a racecar for the street. Being able to build them takes planning, time and money. Check out Lee’s Lakester build on page.. 20 Did you know the average human walks 900 miles per year, and drinks 22 gallons of beer. Which means the average human gets 41 miles per gallon. Not bad... Here are some of my emails ….

A mother-in-law stopped by her daughter's house after shopping to find her son-in-law boiling angry and hurriedly packing his suitcase. "What happened?" she asked anxiously. "What happened? I'll tell you what happened. I sent an email to my wife --- your daughter --- telling her I was coming home a day early from my fishing trip. I got home ... and guess what I found? Your daughter in bed with a naked guy! This is unforgivable, the end of our marriage. I'm done. I'm leaving forever!" "Calm down, calm down!" said his mother-in-law. "There's something very odd about that. She would never do such a thing. There must be a simple explanation. I'll go speak to her and find out what happened." A few minutes later, the mother-in-law came back with a big smile and said, "I told you there must be a simple explanation --- she didn't get your email. Jimbo, Curtis & Leroy saw an ad in the Starkville, MS Daily and bought a mule for $100.The farmer agreed to deliver the mule the next day.

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

The next morning the farmer drove up and said, "Sorry, fellows, I have some bad news, the mule died last night." Curtis & Leroy replied, Well, then just give us our money back." The farmer said, "Can't do that. I went and spent it already." They said, "OK then, just bring us the dead mule." The farmer asked, "What in the world ya'll gonna do with a dead mule?" Curtis said, "We gonna raffle him off." The farmer said, "You can't raffle off a dead mule!" Leroy said, "We sure can! Heck, we don't hafta tell nobody he's dead!" A couple of weeks later, the farmer ran into Curtis & Leroy at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store and asked. "What'd you fellers ever do with that dead mule?" They said, "We raffled him off like we said we wuz gonna do." Leroy said, "Shucks, we sold 500 tickets fer two dollars apiece and made a profit of $998." The farmer said, "My Lord, didn't anyone complain?" Curtis said, "Well, the feller who won got upset. So we gave him his two dollars back." Curtis and Leroy now work for the government. They're overseeing the Medicare and Social Security Programs. ttommys@ Jimbo, Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are getting weak? Why do banks charge a fee on "insufficient funds" when they know there is not enough? Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet? Why doesn't glue stick to the bottle? Why do they use sterilized needles for death by lethal injection? Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard? Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a revolver at him? Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets? Whose idea was it to put an "S" in the word "lisp"? If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white? Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized? Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance? Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try? How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures? When we are in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping cart then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, "It's all right?" Well, it isn't all right, so why don't we say, "That hurt, you stupid idiot?" Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat? How come you never hear father-in-law jokes? amickey@ Around age 10 my dad got me one of those little badass compound bow beginner kits. Of course, the first month I went around our land sticking arrows in anything that could get stuck by an arrow. Did you know that a 1955 40 horse Farmall tractor tire will take 6 rounds before it goes down? Tough sumbich. That got boring, so being the 10 yr. old Dukes of Hazard fan that I was, I quickly advanced to taking strips of cut up T-shirt doused in chainsaw gas tied around the end and was sending flaming arrows all over the place. One summer afternoon, I was shooting flaming

arrows into a large rotten oak stump in our backyard. I looked over under the carport and see a shiny brand new can of starting fluid (Ether). The light bulb went off in my head. I grabbed the can and set it on the stump. I thought that it would probably just spray out in a disappointing manner. Lets face it, to a 10 yr old mouth-breather like myself, (Ether), really doesn't "sound" flammable. So, I went back into the house and got a 1 pound can of Pyrodex (black powder for muzzle loader rifles). At this point, I set the can of ether on the stump and opened up the can of black powder. My intentions were to sprinkle a little bit around the (Ether) can but it all sorta dumped out on me. No biggie, a 1 lb. Pyrodex and 16 oz (Ether) should make a loud pop, kinda like a firecracker you know? You know what? Screw that I'm going back in the house for the other can. Yes, I got a second can of pyrodex and dumped it too. Now we're cookin'. I stepped back about 15 ft and lit the 2 stroke arrow. I drew the nock to my cheek and took aim. As I released I heard a clunk as the arrow launched from my bow. In a slow motion time frame, I turned to see my dad getting out of the truck...OH SHIT! He just got home from work. So help me God it took 10 minutes for that arrow to go from my bow to the can. My dad was walking towards me in slow motion with a WTF look in his eyes. I turned back towards my target just in time to see the arrow pierce the starting fluid can right at the bottom. Right through the main pile of Pyrodex and into the can. Oh Shit. When the shock wave hit it knocked me off my feet. I don't know if it was the actual compression wave that threw me back or just reflex jerk back from 235 fricking decibels of sound. I caught a half a millisecond glimpse of the violence during the initial explosion and I will tell you there was dust, grass, and bugs all hovering 1 ft above the ground as far as I could see. It was like a little low to the ground layer of dust fog full of grasshoppers, spiders, and a worm or two. The daylight turned purple. Let me repeat this... THE FRICKING DAYLIGHT TURNED PURPLE. There was a big sweetgum tree out by the gate going into the pasture. Notice I said "was". That son-of-a-bitch got up and ran off. So here I am, on the ground blown completely out of my shoes with my Thundercats T-Shirt shredded, my dad is on the other side of the carport having what I can only assume is a Vietnam flashback: ECHO BRAVO CHARLIE YOU'RE BRINGIN' EM IN TOO CLOSE!! CEASE FIRE. DAMNIT CEASE FIRE!!!!! His hat has blown off and is 30 ft. behind him in the driveway. All windows on the north side of the house are blown out and there is a slow rolling mushroom cloud about 2000 ft. over our backyard. There is a Honda 185 3 wheeler parked on the other side of the

yard and the fenders are drooped down and are now touching the tires. I wish I knew what I said to my dad at this moment. I don't know I know I said something. I couldn't hear. I couldn't hear inside my own head. I don't think he heard me either... not that it would really matter. I don't remember much from this point on. I said something, felt a sharp pain, and then woke up later. I felt a sharp pain, blacked out, woke later....repeat this process for an hour or so and you get the idea. I remember at one point my mom had to give me CPR. and Dad screaming "Bring Him back to life so I can kill him again". Thanks Mom. One thing is for sure... I never had to mow around that stump again, Mom had been bitching about that thing for years and dad never did anything about it. I stepped up to the plate and handled business. Dad sold his muzzle loader a week or so later. I still have some sort of bone growth abnormality, either from the blast or the beating, or both. I guess what I'm trying to say is, get your kids into archery. It's good discipline and will teach them skills they can use later on in life. ~Author Unknown Sounds like many of my friends and family .. You will know who they (or you) are .,.. Till next month… Jimbo

I worked for my father at his service station A gas station is a common meeting place for a nation on the move – from clueless travelers to friends closer to home – and the summers I spent pumping gas gave me the chance to observe them all. Looking back on my summers as a teen, a huge bite of life's reality sandwich came courtesy of my job pumping gas at my parents' service station. Sometimes that realism followed the age-old phrase "you have to see it to believe it." This was when as a customer you pulled up to a gas station and people came out to pump your gas, check your oil, tire pressure, and coolant level. They also would wipe your windshield (front and rear) clean and let you know if you needed wiper blades etc. I was one of those people. I started working there when I was 15 years old and made forty-five cents an hour plus all the soft drinks and snacks I could eat. ! Our station sat across the road from my high school at one end of a busy retail plaza. Chances were great that I would be serving people I knew, whether I liked them or not. As an awkward teenager, I did not relish facing tough guys from gym class or the best-looking girls in school, with the smell of gasoline all over me and streaks of grease and oil on my arms and face. My first year at the pumps taught me a few things. Checking the oil and transmission was easy, but puncturing those old cans of 10W30 and not spilling anything was next to impossible. The grumpiest people always had their oil intake in a spot that only Houdini could reach. Mishaps occurred on the hottest days, producing

smoke when the oil hit the engine manifold. People either glared at me or acted as though the Towering Inferno was being filmed. I also learned that daft individuals owned the most dangerous pets. I was astonished when people would casually state "don't worry, he won't bite" while the menacing 150 -pounder was growling and snapping at me. The biggest dog I remember was a husky that ran around in circles barking and trying to bite its own tail. It was hardly a re-assuring site for a skinny teenager in shorts and short sleeves. The bell cord between the pump islands was both a source of frustration and amusement. Pedestrians cutting through the lot could not resist jumping on the cord to

signal a customer. This was annoying when I was busy stocking shelves or trying to make a quick pit stop in the washroom. But one colleague of mine used to have the hose in the ready position to squirt the deserving victims. These experiences taught me how to control my temper and learn to deal rationally with customers. It didn't always work out that way. One of the liveliest exchanges I had involved a lady working with the Victorian Order of Nurses. At one point, she questioned my ability to count or read, whereupon I looked at the acronym on the side of the car and noted that it read "VON-very old nurses." Sunny, warm weekend mornings were particularly distracting for a teenage boy. Bikini-clad girls would pull up to the pumps on their way to the Beach. You were always supposed to wash the windows and offer to check the oil at a full-serve and I made absolutely sure I did both in these cases. If they were from outside the area and needed directions, it was all the better. That was also my last summer working at dad’s station, I enlisted and was leaving for the Army. Oddly enough, two of my last customers were my Grade 4 teacher and my old crossing guard, neither of whom I'd seen in 10 years. What that symbolized I can't say but that last week was hot and humid like all the others. Over the years I came to expect a few things: the teachers I disliked the most in high school were even worse as customers since they expected me to uphold every promise in their car's owner's manual. But I met some incredibly nice people who trusted me to treat them and their vehicles right. Save for a few honest mistakes, I always did. I worked there all through high school but added office work and auto-parts supply to the job. I made it to $1.25 an hour before moving on.

Happy New Year, and welcome 2019. Hope all is well with you and yours. We here at the Queens castle are doing well, and are thankful to have reasonably good health. While I did not meet the goal of at least driving the Big Truck Project in the neighborhood, it sure looks positive I will do that and much more this year. It seems I was quite distracted and not available lots of times last year to work on that project. I did have a good time on several journeys with the Queen though. We have a few things planned for this year too and I do hope those plans do not interfere with my goals for the Big Truck Project. I will most likely be trimming back my attendance on many, every weekend car shows. Will most likely scale that back to 1 or at most 2 a month. If I am going to truly get something done I can't possibly keep going to every one of those events. There are a few events on my radar for the coming months of this New Year. The first is an always have to go to is the old Diamondhead Winter Rod Run now in Covington La. The next on my early list is the Gnat Nationals in beautiful Bay St. Louis and the very next is the Camellia Classic car show in Slidell. I have only missed a few of these over the years and if I am able I will be in attendance at all of the afore mentioned. I also look forward to the planning meeting, its always a good time checking out the upcoming car show schedule. However; my most exciting trip that we have planned (for me anyway) will be the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville Kentucky this August. This will be its 50th Anniversary edition. Kind of special to me since I had been an attendee for the 25th edition and it was Large, over 14,000 pre 1948 Hot rods were there, and that level of participation has not been reached in the years that followed. I am hoping this will be the year that number is exceeded. It should be an exciting time in Louisville for sure. Four days of fun with some beautiful cars, and fun with some real good folks. The Queen and I will be in training soon so we wont be as sore from all the walking as we were last year. By now you've realized there must be some kind of mistake here. Well there is and was, this was the article for Januarys issue. What we had here was a failure to communicate. For once I sent this off early to our fearless editor, only to find out it wound up in the nether regions of the world of unclaimed e -mails, or just not passed along to the appropriate address. Yes in the 21st century it seems we still have gremlins that invade our electronic gizmos and gadgets that we so often depend on. It happens, not too often though, either way it did not make it to press, our apologies are in order. The necessary repairs and updates have been installed and this may or may not happen again. Either way its not that big a deal we'll just roll with it. Well I've got to go for now, the Carriage House is calling out and the Big Truck Project ain’t going to build itself. Doors to fix, exhaust to build, install some glass, etc, etc. I promise I will keep you all posted on my progress or lack of, whichever the case may be. Later, and again hope all you folks have a Wonderful New Year, and by now its time to wish a Happy St. Valentines Day to you all as well, from the cold and now wet and dreary, but busy Carriage House. ... The Cole Report. Finished out the Toy Drive events over in D'Iberville, MS. With the Singing River Street Rods Annual Toy Drive Car Show.. They had a nice turnout for a great cause. Made a run to Waveland for the Arby's grand opening. Good little event promoting a new local business. Also made a couple of the 2nd Friday monthly cruise in’s at Dairy Queen in Slidell. The car events are out there in the winter you just gotta’ get out and brave the weather to make the rounds. I'd like to Congratulate my wife Glenda, she just retired from Coast Electric Power with 41 yrs of service. Hopefully, maybe this means we see her driving the old 1949 Mercury "Kermit the Frog Green" I built her back in 1999. Remember to watch for our friends out riding their bikes also. ... Allen

ONLY CAR ITEMS ALLOWED

By: Joyce Lachaussee I graduated from Pascagoula High School in ....well, let's just say some time ago. Back then, each of us had a car manufacturer we thought was the best. My Dad thought there wasn't another car made if it wasn't a Chevy, his brother, on the other hand, was a Buick man and so on. Since our family only had one family car, I had no choice of what to like or drive and soon found out upon graduation, I would drive whatever I could afford that would get me from Point A to Point B. But looking back, I realize now that I grew up in one of the greatest car and music eras ever. The very year I graduated, the 1965 Mustang was born and the #1 hit was "Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs (what a name!). I won't say it was the "car" of all time but it certainly ranked up top. Having recently finished reading the book "Ford - the Men and the machines", I have developed a new appreciation for this little American icon. Let's face it, whether you are a Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Buick, etc. fan, the greatest American and possibly the world's greatest car was the Model T and then the A. Don't get upset yet. I challenge each of you to read the above book and you will get a whole new outlook or perspective on these classic cars. It doesn't mean it was the best built or the prettiest but it put the world behind the wheel without a HORSETAIL in front! With all due respect to Henry and his contribution to the automotive industry, in my humble opinion, no other car/s have made the impact the TRI 5 (55, 56, 57) did on the car market. I really had a reason for all the above info. It was to introduce the feature car from Lucedale Hardee's Breakfast Cruise In for January. It's this beautiful '57 Chevy that Tom and Kathy Browning from Wade own. This was a maiden trip to Lucedale in this car for Tom and Kathy. Since getting it back from restoration Tom has been burning up the roads to Cruise Ins and Car Shows enjoying the flash and awe it generates. This '57 is painted a rich dark Garnet metallic and boy does it stand out. Tom had a complete restoration on this beauty. It has all the pep it need with the 327. Kathy likes it for the cool air and heat plus it's an automatic. It certainly brings me back to my childhood. I learned to drive in our yellow and white, 3 on a tree '57. In addition to this classic, they have a RED '32 Ford Coupe. Please, please bring this one back. In fact, Kathy can drive the '57 and Tom the '32! Sounds like a plan.

Another first time visitor was Clemouth Blankenship and his wife from Mobile. This '57 Chevy Cameo Truck caught my eye the minute it pulled into the parking lot. This honey has a 350 with a 700 R 4 transmission. It's an automatic and has a bonus - cold air! Clem doesn't do the body work but his expertise lies in the mechanical end. A name many of you will recognize from the body work world actually restored this truck - Jay Munoz, Pete Delongs' step son. In this truck, both the mechanical and body work came together in a very nice package. Clem has a '30 Model A High Boy street rod that plays nicely with the younger Chevy truck. Thanks for coming.

Well it seems like there were several first times for trucks and cars. Billy Blankenship, who is following in his father, Clem's footsteps brought this '72 Camero for the first time. This beauty had a total frame off restoration. Billy, like his dad, does only mechanical. This Camero had a 350 with cold air. Billy purchased it in 2007 and finished in 2018. Boy can be relate to that! Billy has another Camero but it's a dragster. He definitely is not racing this one. All are welcome at Lucedale Hardee's Breakfast Cruise In with or without a vehicle. Come every second Friday of the month and enjoy coffee, breakfast or just good company. See you there.

2019, in full force, wow how time flies! Back before Christmas a friend, Melissa Kelton, offered me some free cast member tickets to see the Polar Express Train Ride in New Orleans. Her son Jay and I were in a couple of plays together at Center Stage-Biloxi; Jay has been a cast member in this show a couple years now and is a great child actor. I graciously accepted five tickets and set about along with my son Jason, his wife Michelle and the kids, Cam & Chase to prepare for an exciting trip for the grandkids who are ages 8 and 3 1/2. We had to get new pajamas to wear on the trip. While you don’t have to wear PJ’s most people do. You also have to plan on how you are going to eat out before or after your trip with those PJ’s on. We took jogging pants to slip on over the PJ bottoms. Shoes are whatever you want to wear, we chose tennis shoes. We arrived at the train station about forty-five minutes before departure and got checked in, all the kids knew were… they were getting to wear their new pajamas for the trip. Michelle had shown them the Polar Express Movie about a week before the trip and I think Cam was starting to figure it was something to do with the movie, but Chase was just taking it all in. The train is a full size railroad train, it’s beautifully decorated for Christmas and actors perform the Polar Express story. It’s officially licensed by Warner Bros Productions, so it’s all first class. I know its way past Christmas, but I wanted to share it with so you could plan it for your kids or grandkids for next Christmas. I didn’t want to give any of the magic details away of the trip, but it is one of those memory building things for the kids and it’s only a little over an hour from the MS Gulf Coast. So you can plan it out for the kids… and then visiting one of your favorite restaurants in the city for the adults, before or after depending on the time you book. Tickets run about fifty dollars a person. The train station is located in New Orleans at 1001 Loyola Avenue and their website for more info and tickets is nolathepolarexpressride.com. New Year’s Eve day as I start to write this column for February, I know as soon as I get up, what I have to do. Scotty always prepared for the New Year by making sure both the house and vehicles were all clean. Sheets on the bed cleaned, all the dishes washed, clothes all clean, Castmember Jay Kelton is holding up she believed how you entered the “Golden Ticket” ticket for the the New Year is what you Polar Express adventure. were up against all year. Now she knew the house wouldn’t magically stay clean, but she thought you would have a leg up on keeping it that way. If you started the New Year with your house all dirty, you would really struggle to keep it clean all year. Also it was passed down to her by her family that you never washed on New Year’s Day or you would lose a family member in the coming year. I don’t think she really believed it, but she wasn’t taking any chances. As I don’t really have any New Years plans for tonight, I prefer to stay home on Amateur Night, I now have twelve hours to complete the cleaning task before midnight. Very easy... Heck no it wasn’t easy, I kept thinking of extra things that needed to be done that I haven’t thought of. Like the garbage, the cat

liter box, shampooing the dog, dusting, and giving myself a bath. I can’t start the new year dirty myself now can I? The dog bath, blow drying and brushing completed at 11:45 pm. My bath completed at 11:55 pm and now sitting down in front of the TV for ringing in the New Year…and then it hit me, I am starting the New Year exhausted, so I guess I’ll be exhausted all year. But it does feel good to start off a blank page for a brand new year with everything clean, neat and organized. I guess being exposed to that kind of stuff for thirty four years had a lasting effect! As I sit down near the middle of the month of January to finish this column the day before my 15th of the month deadline, I have just finished a whirlwind weekend with a lady friend of mine from my hometown. Corbie and I packed more in a weekend than you could imagine including a French Market trip to New Orleans, rickshaw ride, the French Quarter, finally ending the day eating red beans, rice & sausage at Pat O’Brien’s and finishing the day up with the dueling grand pianos in the legendary Pat O’Brien’s Piano Bar. It was Corbie’s first trip to New Orleans and there is nothing better than showing a first timer the sites of the city. Corbie’s Fit-Bit logged 10,000 steps we made on Saturday alone. Then Sunday morning we attended church, ate some Mexican food and we capped the day off by watching the Saints-Eagles Playoff game which was exciting, to say the least. We do now have another Saints fan in our mist. Go Saints! A new year means more of…when you get up in the morning never knowing exactly what awaits you each day of your life. That’s the part I really enjoy, a new year with 365 blank pages you fill in as you go. Wow, how time flies! I hope your winter Hot Rod projects are going well as the Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show inquires start coming in for 2019 and I sincerely hope you can keep that 17 FOREVER lifestyle going wide open! til next month…

Here.’...and then we got to watch the entire movie from start to finish. It was awesome...when the movie was over with they came out. They thanked everybody. They brought us two girls up. They presented us with official movie posters and then had us go outside. Did more photos with them at night with all of the spotlights on, and then everybody got to come out of the theater and everybody got to come and do a group shot with the vehicles. We had new and old Volkswagens at that point, so we had a total of seven Volkswagens there just for the Bumblebee movie. So, it was a long day. It was an exciting day. Chaotic at times, but it was worth it. It was worth it. It was a lot of fun.”

January 12, 2019 By: ChandaElaine There was an amazing turnout for January Texoma Cars & Coffee at Main Street Motors. Cars were packed into the showroom and lined both sides of Main Street! After drinking my weight in coffee, it was time to catch-up Aimee Freise to hear all about her adventures in movie promotion for the Bumblebee movie with her Volkswagen Beetle, Layla. “Oh, my gosh. So, we had to be down in Dallas at 9:30 (AM) to unload, and this was at the radio stations on I-75 in the heart of downtown Dallas,” said Aimee. “It was the KRLD Studio building, but it was for 107.5 FM, La Grande. We unloaded there and the other girl, Jennifer, showed up with her yellow Beetle, as well, so we were all up on the top floor of the parking garage. Several DJs had come out and they posed with the vehicles; they did their life Facebook videos doing the giveaways for the movie premier that night; and they were all climbing in the cars, having fun with them, got photos with us. We got to take a tour of the studio, watch them live on-air talking about the moving, talking about, ‘Come out, see our vehicles at the movie premier.’ That lasted about two, two-and-a-half hours, and then we loaded back up on the trailer and we were to go to the Studio Movie Grill [Corporate Drive].” “Driving there was a nightmare because of construction and having a classic car on a trailer in between construction vehicle had me very, very nervous. I was freakin’ out there a little bit… ‘cause all I could see was a truck with a trailer and my car bouncing, and it just make me nervous.” “So, we get there and we get everything unloaded, and several guys from my car club, and several people from the other group’s car club showed up ... in front of the Studio Movie Grill. We had the big, Bumblebee cut-outs sitting-up and had our vehicles parked with them. All the kids that showed-up with their parents were all there getting photos, had photos with us, our cars. Some of the studio execs were there from Los Colinas for the movie. The radio station was doing a live, on-air giveaway at the Studio Movie Grill, which was just really cool. It was so neat.” “I’ve never done a movie premier before, so when we were able to go in…We all got wristbands... They come in, they take our order, they bring us our food, we have reserved seating. They had specific spots just for us girls with our Beetles that said, ‘Beetle Owners

14

FEBRUARY 2019

I asked her what advice she would give to someone working a premier. “Definitely trailer your vehicle, especially if you’re going to be in area where you are driving all over town, because when you get into the real heavy parts of the Dallas area, or say Chicago or something like that, and you’re wanting to make sure your vehicle gets there, you don’t want something to happen… it was worth it because we were going all over town and we were taking pictures in various spots, tagging the Bumblebee movie on Instagram, on Facebook, saying, ‘Come see us. Look out for Bumblebee. Get to meet the Bumblebee car.’” “Came home with a few movie posters which I will have one at the next Cars & Coffee that we are going to raffle off. An official Bumblebee movie poster for everybody who shows up, so show up and we’ll raffle it off.” We switched gears to talk about Denison’s newest club: The Pink Ladies: “On the second Saturday of each month we have our [Texoma] Cars & Coffee in the morning, which is 8:00 - 10:00AM, or whenever everybody leaves or stays or whatever. Cindy (Connelly), Dani (Smith), and myself have all gotten together and thought, ‘You know, we do have a few women who show up to [Texoma] Cars & Coffee, but it’s usually men. But we know a lot of women in the community that are really into cars, whether they’re classics, antiques, or new cars, or just cars in general.’ So, we thought, ‘Let’s start a group for women only.’... So, we’ve started the Pink Ladies. We are going to meet the second Saturday of each month, but from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. It doesn’t matter if you have an old car, a brand-new car, a daily driver that looks like it’s been to hell and back, or if it’s immaculate. Just show-up and be a part of it. It’s any of us that just love cars in general and it’s a good way to meet other women in the community, get to know each other. We were thinking once we get it going, we thought maybe a cruise one night when the weather’s nice. Cruise to a local drive-in burger joint, or maybe schedule a night when we can all meet and then go do like Painting With A Twist and just have fellowship with other women. And just get together and get to know other people in the community…” Can’t wait to see you there!

If you know me at all, you know that I hate being cold and that I am one of those people who could probably get a chill in the middle of the Sahara Desert. Because of that, I have no idea how people got along in cars and trucks before they had heaters. Seriously. Between cold air and wind outside and freezing vinyl seats inside, how the heck did people stay warm? I know that they dressed differently than we do today. Let’s be honest: if they saw some fool outside in 30-degreeweather in his shower shoes and bare feet they’d want to send him to the bobby hatch. How can you not question their sanity? Automobiles have progressed from rustic replacements for horses and carriages to veritable rolling palaces. Granted, there has been a lot of mistakes and bumps along the way but think about it. Climate control is one area in auto manufacturing where much time and effort has been spent to keep the motoring public comfortable and happy –with heat a particularly important aspect. In the late 1800s, cars were seen as an evolutionary step up from horse-drawn carriages. Suffice it to say that expectations were low and most motorists thought of cars in horse terms, so inclement weather meant staying put. Modern electric and gas-powered cars began appearing in the 1880s, but they were mostly open-bodied, with no windows and no heat.

Engineers and motorists soon tired of these portable heaters. They required maintenance and were inherently dangerous. Instead, the realized that exhaust fumes could be used as a cheap onboard heat source. By 1917, the first heaters came out that circulated exhaust gases into pipes which sent faint heat into the cabin. 1917 Saturday advertisement

In just 12 years, this design was obsolete. In 1929, the first real heaters appeared on the Ford Model A. They sent hot air from the engine into the interior, but the heat wasn’t consistent and it took a while to warm up. In 1933, Ford made the first in - dash heater, a small, gas fueled boiler. Although gas heaters were popular at first, a competing design relied on redirecting coolant from the engine and using that for heat. The first designed to do so appeared in the 1920s, but it wasn’t until 1930 that General Motors pioneered the now standard heater core. This uses a radiator that gets hot coolant from the engine and propels that heat into the cabin using a fan. Since that time, the basic design has changed very little.

As cars grew in popularity, demand for more comfort increased. In 1907, the first enclosed cars emerged with glass windshields. These helped keep the elements at bay but didn’t eliminate their irritations entirely. Motorists wore heavy clothing and had portable heaters, such as gas lamps and burners to warm up the interior and their feet. These were the same type of heaters used in horse carriages for centuries. Composer, Zez Confrey, wearing a fur motoring coat .

The 1973 energy crisis brought renewed interest in the electric car which doesn’t have hot fluids and gases like an internal combustion design. Instead, most electrics use positive coefficient electric heaters, similar to those used in homes, but thriftier in energy consumption.

Nash Motors advanced climate comfort in 1937 by using filters and much finer controls that enabled motorists to regulate air flow and temperature. By then, heater cores were the norm, as gas heaters were costly and risky by comparison and their ambient heat from the engine simply wasn’t strong enough. In 1939, GM introduced car seat heaters on select models (personally, I adore my seat heaters and am grateful to GM every winter!). During World War II, military vehicles were outfitted for the first time with heaters to provide some comfort for troops fighting in the cold, if they were lucky enough to be inside.

Cadillac was the first to introduce fully automatic climate controls–adjusting interior temperatures to those outside. Today, almost all gasoline-powered cars still use the heater core design, including hybrids, and most depend on heaters, rather than air conditioners, to provide effective heat in cold weather.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, car manufacturers began using outside air for climate control. Before, the heater core warmed up whatever air was under the hood but the modern design used rams and scoops that actively gathered air to bring it to the heating element. By the end of the 1950s, heaters became standardized, allowing for models to share the same parts and reducing costs. By the early 1960s, modern heaters became standard on all GM cars. Other makers around the world would soon follow suit.

I, for one, am very happy and grateful that we have heaters in our vehicles today. We can stay nice and toasty on our travels despite the weather outside. Now, if we can just get one working in that ’52 Chevy …

UNCONVENTIONAL HOLIDAYS By Candy Cocktail With the new year, comes all of our favorite holidays. Officially starting with New Year's Eve & continuing through the very first day of the new year; a new page in the book that is 2019. Among the usual special days that you make time to enjoy, from birthdays to Christmas and Halloween to Cinco De Mayo, each year brings the fun times that each unique holiday brings. Yet what about all those holidays that you see on social media, like Star Wars day, or miss the opportunity to celebrate, like National Taco Day; One of my personal favorites because I am definitely down to have tacos more than just on Taco Tuesday! So let's count down the new year with a list of special, quirky, random or bizarre holidays that you may not have previously heard of! JANUARY Not by accident, January is both National Hot Tea and National Soup Month, which makes sense since the heart of winter month is usually the coldest. January first is called National Hangover Day. Even though it is not actually a national holiday, it is indeed a day when many of you are feeling the after effects of all the New Years champagne. If you are feeling exhausted and in need of some rest and relaxation, January third is the day for you. It is Festival of Sleep Day. Houseplant Appreciation Day blooms on January tenth. Then get all buttered up for National Popcorn Day on January nineteenth. January 14th is National Dress Up Your Pet Day! This holiday, not just for cats and dogs, was created to promote pet adoption. You do not have to wait until Halloween to dress up your forever friend. January 29th is National Corn Chip Day so make sure to indulge with some salsa and guacamole. FEBRUARY In February, also known as National Weddings Month, the third week of the month is International Flirting Week. The day that is famous for Valentine's Day and represented with hearts is appropriately also National Organ Donor Day. The day encourages people to sign up for organ donation so they can save a life. If you are not coupled up to enjoy your Valentine's Day, do not fret because February 15th is Singles Awareness Day. Celebrate that you are unattached and take advantage of the discounted Valentine's Day candy on that day. February 3rd is affectionately called The Day the Music Died Day as it commemorates the death of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper when the idols' plane crashed in 1959.

FEBRUARY FEBRUARY 2019 2019

The first Friday in February is Bubble Gum Day. Established for schools by a children’s book author, students bring a 50 cent donation to school and in exchange get to chew bubble gum in school for the day. The first Saturday of the month is International Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. MARCH National Frozen Food Month is in March. Coinciding with one of my favorite holidays, St. Patrick's Day, March is Irish American Month. The first Friday in March is Employee Appreciation Day. March first is National Peanut Butter Lover's Day, honoring America's favorite sandwich topping. March 4th is the day to embrace as it is Hug a GI Day. Give the men and women of our armed forces a big bear hug of thanks. The third Saturday of March is International Sports Car Racing Day. It is the perfect day to celebrate what our magazine loves most! This day coincides with America's oldest sports car endurance race, which started in 1952. The 12 Hours of Sebring sports car endurance race is held annually in Sebring, Florida at the Sebring International Raceway. APRIL April is the National Humor, Pecan and Welding Month. Not your boss' favorite holiday, April third is Don't Go to Work Unless It's Fun Day. April thirteenth is National Scrabble Day. Play a round of the game we have loved since 1938. If you did not have enough beer on St. Patrick's Day, April 7th will give you another reason for a glass of fermented goodness. It is National Beer Day which was celebrated for the first

time in 1993 as Americans indulged in 1.5 million barrels of legal beer and ale. On March 22, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, signed the Cullen-Harrison Act into law, repealing prohibition for beer. Effective April 7, 1933, people could once more buy, sell and consume beer. MAY Just in time for summer, May is National Barbecue month. It is also a particularly good month to honor our first responders with Nurse's Week on the first full week of the month, National Police Week on the third week of the month and the fourth week is devoted to honoring Emergency Medical Services. Roaming the earth for over a million years and near extinction, May 1st is now Save the Rhino Day. It is the ideal day to raise awareness and help in any way you can. May the fourth be with you is the slogan for May 4th, which is Star Wars Day. If you are sick and tired of dieting, May 11th is the cheat day for you: Eat What You Want Day. JUNE June is not only Candy month, but it is National Adopt a Cat Month. June 2nd is the day to indulge your ice cream sweet tooth with National Rocky Road Day! Have as many bowls as you want. June fourth is National Cheese Day. There are between 800 and 1,400 varieties of cheese to choose from so it is of no surprise that Americans consume on average around 31 pounds of cheese per year. June 8th is Best Friend Day. JULY Also called the Blueberry, Hot Dog, Ice Cream and Picnic Month, July is full of summertime themed holidays. World UFO Day seeks to get governments to fess up to the existence of UFOs and is honored on July 2nd. Pucker up July 6th for National Kissing Day. The potent distilled sap of the Blue Agave plant is enjoyed on July 24th, AKA National Tequila Day. By Mexican law, Tequila can only be made from the Blue Agave plant grown specifically in and around Tequila, Mexico, where over 300 million plants are harvested a year! International Chicken Wing Day is July 1st while just National Wing Day is July 29th. Buffalo, NY is the home of the Buffalo Chicken Wing, where it was invented in 1964 at the Anchor Bar & Grill. In the U.S. over 27 billion wings are consumed every year. Over 1.25 billion wings are consumed during the Superbowl game alone! AUGUST Ladies get with your girlfriends on the first of the month to gossip, shop, sip wine and watch a chick flick as you enjoy National Girlfriends Day. Grab the s'mores on the first Saturday in August for Campfire Day. August fourth is U.S. Coast Guard Day. August 8th is Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day. Make everyone laugh on the sixteenth as it is National Tell a Joke Day. August 19th is World Photo Day. Snap away as you celebrate the art of photography. The third Saturday in August is National Honey Bee Day! It is the perfect day to celebrate the hard working honey bees, who travel 55,000 miles to produce just one pound of honey. The bees need to gather nectar from two million flowers for one pound of honey. A single bee will gather just a 1/2

teaspoon of honey in its lifetime. This day was established in 2009 for beekeepers, as a way to promote honey, to encourage educational programs and to give the bees a special day of recognition for their work. SEPTEMBER September 5th is the perfect day for me since I am usually running late; now I have an excuse to be late because the 5th is Be Late For Something Day. The second September Sunday is always National Pet Memorial Day, to honor our beloved and departed pets. September 16th is National Play-Doh Day, to commemorate the childhood toy that has entertained millions of children since its accidental creation in 1955. September 22nd is Hobbit Day, to celebrate the book and movies. Ahoy, September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. OCTOBER October 1st is both International Coffee Day and Homemade Cookies Day. October 2nd is Name Your Car Day. October fifth is Do Something Nice Day. I think we should try to make this one a daily instead of yearly holiday. October 6th is Mad Hatter Day, a day to act silly just like the Alice in Wonderland character. October 17th is National Pasta Day. The last Friday in October is Frankenstein Friday, celebrating the birth of Frankenstein, one of the most beloved monsters of all time. October 30th is National Candy Corn Day. Invented in the 1880s, over 35 million pounds or 9 billion pieces of Candy Corn are consumed annually. NOVEMBER November, also called Peanut Butter Lovers Month and National Novel Writing Month, is the time to celebrate King Tut Day on November fourth. Then the first Thursday in November is Men Make Dinner Day. It was created to give the ladies a break and encourage men who do not know how to cook to learn how. Find a nook to read in on the first Saturday of the month, Book Lovers Day. The Saturday before Thanksgiving is National Adoption Day. The day was created to finalize adoptions and to recognize the loving families that adopt children. Clean out the fridge on November 15th, Clean Your Refrigerator Day. DECEMBER December third is National Roof Over Your Head Day. It is a great day of appreciation for the things we have, starting with the roof over our heads. Be thankful that you have a home to protect you from the elements, keep you warm, dry and cozy and keep you from being homeless. While you are counting your blessings, it is additionally a good time to make a donation to your local homeless shelter. December 4th is Santas' List Day so make sure you are not on the naughty list. December 9th is Christmas Card Day as it is thought to be the ideal day to mail out your holiday greetings. December 18th is one of my favorite days in December: Bake Cookies Day. December 24th is National Egg Nog Day. Bring out the playing cards on December 28th for Card Playing Day. The new year brings us unconventional holidays. Plus I can always use a good excuse to have an extra cocktail or dessert! A National day for my favorite treats is perfect! So happy 2019! Share photos on social media or make a party out of these unusual days. Celebrate all year in style & add a few of the above holidays to your calendar! *For more wacky holidays, visit holidayinsights.com

M&M Kustoms Lakes Racer As a shop owner its always fun to build something just for yourself, or to show what you and your crew can do. That was the idea behind this project. A trade netted us a 23 Touring body that had been cut down to a 'Bucket' and that's pretty much how this got started. A call to the steel store got the tubing on the way and it was time to do a bit of mocking up. From the start I knew that this was going to look like an old Dry Lakes car from the late 40's. Using the 6cyl meant we would have to stretch the frame a little and I wanted the car to look longer than it really was. A twenty four inch stretch in the wheel base and moving the body as far back as possible gave plenty of room for those extra two cyls and we were able to keep most of the transmission's bell housing in the engine compartment vs taking up valuable foot room in the small cockpit of a Model T. A pair of 250ci inline sixes that were taking up space in the shop along with an Offey intake, a pair of MonoJet carbs and a set of headers I got in a trade deal, and we had the start of a project. The two engines were torn down and the best pieces were taken to Peden Racing Engines for machining. On their return it was all assembled by my long time friend Joey Donaldson. I decided a glass body may be a better choice for this build and sourced a couple from a local supplier, a Curtis Sprint Car nose was added and we built a mold for the extended hood. As the car was being built up, the drivers side seemed to be getting a little crowded visually and mechanically. The driving position was moved to the right side to balance things out. The fuel tank is a repurposed Harbor Freight 11 gallon air tank that was cleaned up of all extra bits and a filler neck added. Braking comes from 10.5 in rotors on the front and drums on the rear. A Dual Wilwood master cylinder set up, with adjustable bias front to rear at the pedal pushes the juice. Keeping with the Dry Lakes look 165/75-15 and 225/70-15 radials wrap a set of Cragar Model 69 steel wheels with bullet center caps. The custom bench seat conceals the battery and fuse panel and the split back rests mimic the shape of the grill. Gauges are kept to a minimum with just Tachometer Oil and Temp to keep track of. A USB port under the dash can charge your phone and allow the use of a GPS or Dashboard App to keep track of speed. A quick release steering wheel makes getting in and out of the car a bit easier, plus it's just kewl!! This car went from the steel laying on the floor to a full scale display piece in 45 days and was at Cruisin’ the Coast in our Swap Meet booth. After returning to the shop we plumbed and wired the car and its next showing was at Blue Suede Cruise in Tupelo. The little car always seems to draw a crowd and has been a great 'business card' for the shop. Of course its hard to build a project like this and this quickly with out good help. I would like to thank George Mullen, Joey Donaldson and Joe Leggett for all of their help and support. Lee Taylor M&M Kustoms / Grenada MS / 662 417 3789

This months OVERSPRAY is a pretty cool piece on PRECISION PAINT AND BODY owner’s SHANE LESTER’S hood for his race car that will be featured on STREET OUTLAWS NO PREP RACE KINGS via THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL this year. I will talk a little about color theory when doing realistic fire a.k.a true fire. ENJOY!!!

1. We started this project by sanding it with 800 grit to try not to burn through the bottom layer. It being carbon fiber, it had a lot of texture already. This would help smooth it even more when the final clear would be done. After sanding it, we washed it with Scruff n Stuff to ensure a good solid prep and then washed it thoroughly. 2. I started layout with my trusty 3m 1/4” fine line and basically followed the curves of the hood to find my placement. I keep a fabric tape measure with me just for projects like this to help with my overall design. If your off an 1/8th of an inch don’t sweat it but a 1/4” is a lot easier to see so strive for perfection every time. I re adjusted this tape many times until satisfied and stepped back to see from a distance as well. Then I moved on to the next step. 3. After my panels were where I wanted them, I masked the outer edges to help prevent my fine line from lifting. Then grabbed an even smaller fine line to make a sexy border. At the end of my design I carefully cut the tip into a slightly rounded tip for a nice effect when the final pull happens. 4. I fully prepped the panels again cleaning them with anti-static and wax and grease remover followed with a tack cloth before assuming its time to paint. With the panel fully masked off now and in the paint booth I took my black base and started to lay light coats on the masked off panels until fully covered. I used an artificial sunlight flashlight to double check it before I called it quits. (lighting is important in all painting!!!) 5. I let the black base flash off pretty good and then prepped it by using a grey Scotch bright scratch pad to make sure my stencil, paint, and clear stick. I blow it off. Clean it with prep solutions again, followed by the trusty tack once again. 6. I had to design and cut a stencil using low-tack paint mask material to apply to the black base. I had 3 cut just in case I had a mistake come up, but luckily I knocked out my placement with no worries. I used tape pieces and stuff on the hood as a visual reference, but I still used myself as the best judge as where to stick in the end. (don't second guess yourself as the best tool!) 7. When doing a negative design with stencils ALWAYS cover your design first with color. For this scheme, white was the first step. After a few passes on each side I was happy with coverage. Now lets get to work!! 8. The client was wanting something to match his trailer which had skulls and other elements on it so I had to think a little on how to make such a small area incorporate such. I decided to do a skull on the end and carry flames from it so I searched through my bag of tricks and found a skull stencil that would fit just right. If I was to

22

FEBRUARY 2019

use the stencil all the way, it would be a very detailed skull. So for this one, I really just wanted the basic shape and not take from the entire piece. So I made it more subtle. To start I placed my stencil over the right area and just lightly dusted it to show where all the features will be just for a kind of guide. Then I detailed where I knew there would be more white needed like the forehead and chin ect. I’ll come back to this later but after roughed in with basic shapes I decided to move on. 9. Here is the fun part! I have a very small freehand stencil that just is a little curvy but will do what I want for sure. To start flames you just simply place the stencil down and lightly mist one curve. Then flip your stencil and do the same to the same curve and it will create an hour glass kind of deal. This fire is directional. So I had to account for that when choosing the right angle for stencil. The main thing to remember when doing fire/smoke is to be random with the choices of your stencil. Don’t want it too familiar or it won’t look right. I started on one side and flipped it and did this all over the stencil that was placed but kept flowing from front to back. I did this over and over until the entire piece was covered. I threw in a few free hand strokes to make it more smooth. 10. Fire color theory is simple. So don’t over think it. Here’s a handy diagram for you to study… Remember that red and yellow makes orange and fire is hottest where its whitest… mostly the start of the flame or where licks are closest. 11. I lay my transparent yellow over the entire design making it that color. I then feather my red transparent over more-so the outer areas of the design and working it in, hence creating orange. Remember fire is hottest in the center, so I never over saturate that area with my red. 12. Now start with white and do the process again. The first layers will start melting into the back giving the flame depth. For this piece I did 4 layers but you can do 100 layers if you want. The more the merrier for flame for sure. If I feel like I’ve covered the hot area too much, I feather a little white to hot it back up and carry on with transparent. 13. I was happy with my flames and depth. So I grabbed my skull stencil and just blacked in main parts and left out main detail because its about fire, not skulls. I finished with a little white in the eyes. 14. I added one more flame process layer to melt skull in and just give it that extra wow when pulled and used base black to control

outer areas. I tone them down when I got out of hand a little. 15. Time to pull the stencil. I used Exacto #11 to carefully pull each and every part. This month I’m going to take y’all way back…It was 2008 and 2009, when Chase started racing in the rookie kart division. The rules stated that the karts would all have to run the same gear, same maximum tire circumference, and the same 3,600 RPM rule which would be preset by the tech-man before each race. The engines were to remain stock as purchased from Harbor Freight ($99 on sale!…sure miss those days!!!) with only an aftermarket header and air filter modification option. So, let me back up for a minute right here…I raced dirt track cars myself in my younger years…from the time I turned 15 until my early 20s. I would like to say I had the worst luck ever! I always had SOME sort of issues going on, that prevented me from being competitive! On the nights that I was competitive, it always seemed (Continued on page 26)

Dirt Track Revival by: Chavus Holland Welcome back everyone! As we were last month, we continue to countdown the days until the 2019 racing season begins! Hattiesburg Speedway just announced publicly that they will be moving to Saturday night races this season! I know this was a scary decision for the owners to make, because Hattiesburg Speedway has always been a Friday night track. However, with Hattiesburg being a football town and a college town, I think this will be a great decision for them! This change will certainly benefit my family, because Adrian will be able to attend more races now! Hattiesburg is just an hour drive (or less) from the Coast, and it is the ONLY dirt track currently open less than 2 ½ hours from here. Now back in the day, when we had Suncoast Speedway in Pass Christian, MS running Saturday nights along with Hickory, LA and Loxley, AL (all less than an hour away)… then Friday night was the only way to go! BUT…things have changed and sometimes in business you need to adapt, or you’ll be swallowed up completely! It makes total sense to me, from a business standpoint, why this is the correct decision to make. Why am I defending this you ask? Well, because as soon as this announcement was made public, it was criticized by the keyboard warriors of the racing community! I realize some may have a legit reason why this “move” is not beneficial to them personally, but when you look at the big picture, it was still the right move for Hattiesburg Speedway in my opinion. Hattiesburg’s opening night 2019, will still be held on FRIDAY March 1, continuing their tradition of opening the season with the USCS Sprint Cars (Which have consistently brought hotfoots such as Tony Stewart and many other local and out of towners to Hattiesburg Speedway) Once this race is in the books, they will race Saturday nights throughout the rest of the season. I hope the people reading our articles and following our racing adventures, will get out and support Hattiesburg Speedway! (as well as any other small-town racetracks in your area!) We love RACING!!! We don’t want to see it die!!! I understand if you can’t make it to the track every weekend, but it would be great if you tried to make as many races as possible! Bring a friend! We need to support these tracks and help them keep their doors open. I’ve seen many close down in the past several years that will NEVER reopen again! Enough about that, let’s move on…So, keeping with the theme of last month, I’m going to talk about our early years in racing.

like something stupid would happen to my car! Most of the time it was self-inflicted…like the night I was leading the feature, looking for my first feature win, and ran out of gas! (Sorry Daddy!) But, as I got older and reminisced back on those times, I realized it wasn’t luck at all! It was poor car maintenance or total lack of maintenances, that lead to the unfortunate series of events in my racing career! So, when Chase came along and showed a very strong interest in racing, I vowed to right my wrongs with his racing career! I made a promise to ALWAYS put in 100% in the shop and never go to the track halfcocked! Now back to my story…Each week after a race I would bring Chase’s kart into my shop and clean it in detail as I stripped it apart. I would replace bearings, chains, and sprockets all bi-weekly! In between changes I would clean and lube them as well! I was a fanatic! BUT…the proof was in the pudding! I specifically remember when Chase first started regularly winning races, we were automatically labeled as “cheaters”! If I’m being honest, that kind of hurt at first, but over time I began to see a trend. The same people calling us cheaters were the ones who either did ZERO maintenance or were openly cheating their selves (or both!) and just hadn’t been caught! However, somehow, they still couldn’t seem to find the speed we had! Those parents were crazy though! You wouldn’t believe some of the stuff we’ve heard come out of their mouths!...in front of their kids!!! Let’s just say you could have a hit reality show at the go kart races in the kid classes! Some higher up kart classes had an engine claim rule to prevent folks from cheating up their engines with expensive highperformance parts on the inside. I remember Chase winning one night by a full straightaway, and the 2nd place girl’s dad was livid! He was ranting and raving as he chewed out the tech man and anyone else who would listen! I wasn’t sure what was happening, so I just stayed back out the way and minded my own business. He came stomping past me and Chase and he said (to me) “YOU’RE LUCKY THEY WON’T LET ME BUY/CLAIM YOUR ENGINE!” I said “Hey cat, THEY don’t own this engine, I DO!!! And if you want to buy it, it’s for sale!!!” He mumbled something about NOT wanting my cheating engine anyway…as he rolled his daughters kart out of tech! I still remember the sound of that squeaky kart as he pushed it out of the tech area! Squeak squeak squeak… LOL… It wasn’t my job to explain to him why our well-maintained kart would smoke his neglected kart every week! I still use that as a reference to this day when I want to be lazy on maintenance. You win races in the shop! As the competition caught up, we were searching for new “legal” ways to find an edge on the competition. I stumbled upon just the thing one day by accident in my shop! I’ve never told anyone about this trick before, other than Chase, so here you go…The engines we were racing back then had to have the stock governor in place. One week, while the track was extremely muddy, Chase’s throttle was trying to stick open during practice. The engine was over powering the brakes as Chase came off the track and into tech way too fast! I pulled the plug wire and shut him down! Not knowing what was going on yet, I was about to start gnawing on his butt when he told me the throttle was stuck! After a quick inspection, I realized the culprit was a big chunk of mud on the throttle assembly. This scared me because the karts we were racing back then didn’t have roll cages. If Chase would have made it past me, he could’ve run over people, or ran under something hurting himself! That same day right after we left the tech area during practice, one of our friends had the same problem! His throttle stuck and he ran under the back of a truck! This scared the crap out of everyone, luckily he only had minor injuries! The next week, I rigged up a custom “kill button” on Chase’s steering wheel. I installed it under his right thumb and mounted it inside his steering wheel! Now If he got in trouble, all he had to do is push the button and hold it down until the engine dies! As I was testing it in my shop on the kart stand, I found that if you just hit the “Kill button” and released it quickly, while holding the throttle wide open, it would override the governor for a second and cause the engine’s RPMs to surge (several hundred RPMs) beyond the set RPMs before smoothing back off! Chase and I talked about this and I explained to him (Remember he was only 5 years old at this time) that if he timed this right (on the racetrack) it would give

26

FEBRUARY 2019

him an advantage over his competitors! We tried it out in practice, and Chase found that it was even more effective coming out of the corner while the engine was under the heaviest load! The downside was, the engine would usually backfire very loudly right before the surge! This was a problem because I didn’t want to draw attention to us, so I swapped out our aftermarket header pipe back to our stock muffler…Problem solved! He won a bunch of races using that homemade scramble button! You may call this a form of cheating, but I consider it racing innovation! The Red Rocket was born and the rest, as they say, is history! I hope you all enjoyed this story! Thank you all for reading! Until next time…Chavus

Have Gas Price Wars Ever Stopped? Indiana gasoline prices fluctuate every week. The price of crude oil goes down, but the price of gasoline increases. When the Speedway gas stations increase their prices, so does every other gasoline retailer in the area. Gasoline can be $3.99 per gallon in Plainfield where I live, but I can drive 4 miles into another area and the price can be $3.79 per gallon, or it could be $4.19. There is no consistency in the price of gasoline in Indiana. I have checked to ascertain whether there is a correlation between when the gasoline retailers fill their underground tanks and the increase or decrease in price. The price raises even when gasoline has not been purchased by the retailer. Hmmm! Does this make any sense? Not to me. I thought back to the 1950’s and 1960’s when “gas price wars” were common. That was caused by an over-abundance of gasoline in the marketplace. The independent retailers were trying to sell more fuel than the competition across or down the street, so they would lower the price by a penny to lure customers to their establishment. It worked, too, because people would drive to save a penny. This would often force the major brands of gasoline to drop their prices as much as 7 cents a gallon in order to compete. This is how it worked in 1957. The price structure of the major outlets’ “tank wagon price” (the amount paid by filling stations) in December 1957 was 9.4 cents. State and federal taxes added 10.5 cents. The dealer’s margin was 5 cents. The price to the consumer was 24.9 cents. You can see that while the public was enjoying the periodic availability of bargain gasoline, many full-service station owners suffered. Oil companies fixed the pricing on stations that they owned, which often did not cover operator’s overhead during gas wars. The major brands often offered rebates or discounts to company-owned stations to ease the pressure on their operators. The importation of millions of barrels of crude and semi-refined oil was blamed for the high prices of gasoline. Money crazy leaders certainly played their part in it as well. The lower gas price was embraced by teenagers and adults alike. The teenagers could afford to “cruise”. $2.00 worth could fill the gas tank on a 1957 Chevy. A guy could take a date out to a movie and a dinner at Shoney’s on a five dollar bill. Some days filling stations would sell as much as 10,000 gallons a day. Normal days before the gasoline wars, they would sell 1200 to 1400 gallons. People would bring in barrels, tanks, anything you could think of to fill with gasoline. Pickup trucks could hold up to eight 65 gallon barrels in the bed. It was a true amazement! Remember that this was before the self-service days, and an employee had to pump all of this gas along with washing the windows, checking the oil, putting air in the tires, and filling the radiator with water. He would even give you a drinking glass to take home and Green Stamps. From 1920 until 1980 you could get a free road map if you asked for it. Fast forward to 2019 and you find gasoline prices all over the place again. Price changes of forty or fifty cents a day are not uncommon. No one washes your windshield, or checks the air in your tires, or checks your oil or water, and no attendant even comes out to collect your money. You have to walk inside to pay. This is certainly a modern improvement over the “old days”…or is it? Uncle Ezra says to be wary of who you make your memories with…they could last a lifetime.

Every person has a gift to give. It could be knowledge, music, public speaking, art, etc. However, if you don’t give it, it only lasts your lifetime. Share it, and you become immortal… Donna “Sugar Bug” White

Some folks just love to race, and John Gray is one of those folks. Born in Mississippi in 1962, he currently lives in the eastern Tennessee town of Paint Rock along with his wife of 33 years (Hannelore), son (Jeremy), and daughter (Kristen). He works as a pipe fitter, and races on the weekends within 250 miles of his home. When you first meet John, his smile is the first thing you notice. From the time he enters the gate till the time he leaves, he is engaging, enjoys everyone, and always takes a minute to talk to everyone. He especially loves the kids that come up and want to sit in his rat rod or take a ride down the track with him. One of his favorite parts of racing, however, is when his cousin (Ronald Walker) gets to go on his trips with him. He loves to meet people, and especially likes the shock factor when they don’t expect his rat rod to be as fast and durable as it is. For example, in Brainerd, GA he participated in a “cruise and race”. He made the entire 80 mile cruise, as well as made it down to the top four cars in the race. John’s 1947 International truck first came to be as a project for him and his son over 15 years ago. It first had a 1961 Pontiac motor, but now has a 865 HP Chevy LS 6.0 on an S10 frame, CSU blowthrough carburetor, BTR turbo cam, and a PTC torque converter. Most of the parts of the truck were given to John or came from junkyards. The emblems on the doors were painted on by his younger brother, Bobby. The fastest he has gone was November, 2018 at Brainerd, where he went 5.18 seconds (138 mph) on the 1/8th mile track. However, some of his goals are to get his truck to run in the 4’s, get a parachute on it, and “get better front brakes so I can get it stopped”. John doesn’t let much keep him from racing. In

Union, SC, he took the motor apart at the track on a Friday night and put rods and pistons in it so he could race on Saturday. When asked what he would pass on to younger generations, he stated “Keep it off the street and take it to the track”. John would go watch drag races as a kid with Bobby Edgemon. He has also enjoyed seeing Billy Smith, who has a turbo charged Nova with small tires. John’s first races to be in the seat was bracket races at I40 in Crossville, Tennessee. It was also at this track that he had his only wreck. Two years ago, he spun around, hit the wall, then hit the opposite wall backwards. Thankfully, he had no injuries and his truck only had minor repairs to be made. This year, John is planning on going to the Carolina PushRodz race in North Carolina, Steel in Motion (his favorite race) in South Carolina, Greer, SC, SNDR races in Georgia, and his home track in Crossville, TN, as well as possibly some others. He is a member of the Carolina PushRodz car club and the Greasy Hubcaps. He has won Dragstalgia at Crossville, TN and has won with the Carolina PushRodz. He said one of his favorite wins was in Greer, SC a couple years ago when he raced a 1955 Thunderbird heads-up and won. John has set the example that all you need to race is a smile, a love for the sport, and the courage to do it. But, in his own words, “I’ve had worse habits”.

A 1957 Chevy Belair two door hardtop. This is a beautiful example of the quintessential 1950s classic! This is the car that most people associate with the 1950s, and this one is an excellent example of that American classic. The Matador red paint is in excellent condition, with nary a chip or scratch. The chrome appears to have been redone, and the Bright work is nearly flawless. Inside, the seats are hounds-tooth deluxe with inlay and are in great shape there are no signs of wear or sagging, the carpet and headliner look new. It is powered by a 283 power PAC engine, larger valve springs, a four barrel carburetor from the factory, and a 3speed column mounted standard transmission. This car is as good mechanically as it is goodlooking. It runs and drives as it did back in 1957. It is equipped with dual rear antennas, dual mirrors, and fender skirts with rock-guards! It has a 12 volt electrical system with deluxe bumpers. This car looks like it is ready to head down to the corner soda shop for a chocolate frappe!! Mileage showing 2,481 Call Greg for more info 601 441-6246 posted 11/18
