Too often we discount ourselves thinking we don’t have much to offer. We look at what we don’t have and what we can’t do. Your gift may seem small, but if you’ll start using it, it will grow. It’s like an acorn. You could look at it and think, “Big deal. All I have is this little gift. God, You created the universe and this is all You’ve given me?” What you can’t see is there is incredible potential in that small gift. In that little acorn is a huge oak tree, branches spreading out fifty feet wide. Don’t discount your gift because it seems small. The scripture says in Matthew 6:34, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have enough worries of its own.” God gives you the grace for today. Don’t try to figure out the next five years, playing all the ‘what if’s.’ The ‘what if’s’ will make you depressed. The good news is that if the ‘what if’ does happen, God will give you the grace to handle it. There should be something you’re believing for where you are relentless. You aren’t moved by how impossible it looks; you’re not discouraged by how long it’s taking; you don’t give up because people told you no. Your attitude is, “If I have to believe my whole life, I’m going keep believing. I’m not going to take no for an answer. I’m not going to settle for less. I’m going to keep pursuing what God put in my heart.” … Joel Osteen

By: Jimbo Volunteers from our local Car Clubs, and the volunteers of the Gulf Coast community, local Radio & TV stations, and the social media have all been planning for this 2018 Cruisin’ The Coast® . 12 Host Car Clubs providing over 700 volunteers who help with registering vehicles, directing cars at the venues, giving directions, and welcoming our guests. These are just the jobs cruisers see. There are hundreds of behind the scenes and pre-event activities that our volunteers help with all year long. When you see someone in a bright yellow staff shirt – that is a fellow car lover who is donating time to make this a fun event for all. If you get a chance you may want to say thank you to a volunteer during your visit. Cruisin’ The Coast® has become the biggest special event in the state of Mississippi. As Cruisin’ The Coast® has grown, the honors and awards have followed suit. Cruisin’ The Coast® received the Governor’s Excellence in Tourism Award as Festival/Event of the Year in the State of Mississippi (by Jarvis Brannon). Cruisin’ The Coast® was also

In 2007, the Automotive Restoration Market named Cruisin’ The Coast the 2007 Restoration Event of the Year. We want to thank all of our volunteers, sponsors, participating vendors, and you, the car enthusiasts, who have made Cruisin’ The Coast® the success story it is. … cruisinthecoast.com Here are some of my emails …. Jimbo, Just wanted to let you and your readers know about a Swap Meet that we are having here at DY Performance in Lucedale, MS on October 19th and 20th. We think this will be a great opportunity for our automobile friends to sell those leftover parts and pieces from old projects, or find parts for their latest project. This will be our first annual swap meet event and we are excited about it! In addition to the automobile vendors, we will also have arts and crafts booths for the ladies to browse, a car corral for anyone that has a classic car they would like to sell, and food! IGO First (a first -responder group that brings aid to disaster victims and does search and rescue) will be selling hamburgers and hotdogs and we plan to have some sweet treats too. We are in the process of taking applications for vendor spots now. Automobile related items only. The car corral is free, but space is limited, so it's first come first served! We plan to make this an annual event; maybe semi-annual if there's enough interest! joyc0213@ Jimbo, In the retirement community of Hilton Head, South Carolina last week, there was a bumper sticker on a parked car that read: "I miss Chicago.” So someone broke the windows, stole the radio, shot out all four of the tires, added an Obama Bumper Sticker and left a note that read: "Hope this helps!" gptteebyrd@ Jimbo, I was having trouble with my computer so I called my 13 year-old son to help me. He clicked a couple of buttons and fixed it. As he was walking back to his room I asked him what the problem was. He said “It was an ‘ID ten T’ issue”. Not wanting to sound stupid but curious in case I had the same problem again, I asked him what an ID ten T was. “Write it down”, he said, so I did. ID10T…….he never was my favorite child anyway… pauladianbinet Jimbo, At a wedding party recently someone yelled, “All married people please stand next to the one person who has made your life worth living.” The bartender was almost crushed to death… eddiemac@ Jimbo, I have a guy friend he’s a single guy who was living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune once his elderly father died, he decided he really needed a wife with which to share his fortune. One evening at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away. He knew right away that this just might be “the one” and felt he must get up the courage to speak to her. After proper introductions and a bit of small talk, he tells the lovely lady, "I may look like just an ordinary man, but in just a few years, my father will die, and I'll inherit 20 million dollars."

Impressed, the woman obtained his business card and assured him she would see him again soon. A few days later, the woman became my friends stepmother. Women are so much better at estate planning than men. Lynnfar1944@ Jimbo, An amazing older Cajun lady who worked for a family in South Louisiana for decades had two large pots, one hung on each end of a pole. She carried these pots across her neck, both filled with water from the bayou out in front of the family's home. She diligently used this water to nourish all of the house plants. One of the pots had a crack in it. The other pot was perfect, and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk to the family's house. The cracked pot, however, arrived only half full. For years this went on daily, with the old woman delivering only one and a half pots full of water to the house. The perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the task for which it was made. But, the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the old Cajun lady one day down by the bayou: "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you." Why?" asked the noble old lady. "What are you ashamed of?" "I have been able, for these past years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to the family's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said. The wise old Cajun woman felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in her compassion said, "As we return to the house today, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path." Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered up the pot somewhat. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again, it apologized to the old woman for its failure. The Cajun lady said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the bayou, you've watered them." “For years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the family's table. Without you being just the way you are, they would not have this beauty to grace their home." Moral: Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're all cracked pots. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so much more interesting and rewarding. We've just got to take each person for what they really are, and look for all the good in them. And there's a lot of good out there . . . Jimbo, Here are 5 ways for a man to be completely happy… 1. Be with a woman who makes you laugh. 2. Be with a woman who gives you her time. 3. Be with a woman who takes care of you. 4. Be with a woman who really loves you. 5. Finally, make sure these four women don't know each other! Till next month …… Jimbo

The name George Trosley may not be instantly recognizable to some of our Gulf Coast MotorSports readers, but to some of us, his cartoons and teeshirts are. To all of you, who have become familiar with George Trosley's work from the pages of CARtoons, Hot Rod Cartoons, Street Rodder, Car Craft, Popular Hot Rodding, Super Chevy, Street Truck, Kar Kulture Deluxe, Rod and Custom, Street Scene and many more. Trosley is the creator of Krass & Bernie, a comic strip which ran continuously in CARtoons from 1975 until that magazine's last issue in August 1991. Trosley also produced many other features for CARtoons, including a regular "How To Draw Cars" instructional series. This book contained many of these "How To Draw Cars" articles, titled Trosley's How To Draw Cartoon Cars. Since May 2005, new episodes of Krass & Bernie have been printed in Car Craft. Some issues of CARtoons contained two or three separate Krass & Bernie stories. He is one of the regular contributors to CARtoons Magazine, Hot Rod cartoons and CYCLEtoons for Petersen Publishing.
George Trosley began drawing cartoons at the tender age of five. Professional cartooning came 17 years later. Trosley's more than 30 years of humorous renderings are an illustrated slice of Auto-Americana. A free-flowing style and right-on appreciation of the human condition is what attracts automobile magazine editors to George's work. A master at composition and line quality. George has his finger on the pulse of the car-crazy community in all its rabid devotion and peculiarities. It's most likely due to the fact that George often illustrates his personal passion for automobilia. He can instantly relate what's funny about his own unusual habits, as well as that of other car nuts. Here's what George has to say about himself and his profession: I was born in 1947 to hard-working, middle-class parents, George and Hazel, from Woodlyn, Pennsylvania. As a middle child, I grew up with my older sister, Beverly, and younger brother, Harold. I'm told I was drawing from the time I could hold a crayon. Mom claims she could always keep me quiet with a pencil and a piece of paper. My forth grade teacher, Mrs. McLauglin, was an amateur artist who noticed my inclination and recommended private art lessons from a local painter, which my parents, provided until I hit my teens. Cars were always a major interest for my brother and me and we drew our "dream machines" all the time. We also built model cars while growing up. I could come up with wild customizing ideas and used plastic wood to mold parts from one kit to another. My brother had the patience and body-working talent to turn them into prizewinning creations. Car magazines like R&C constantly fed us fresh
concepts and current styles, and we ate 'em up. We began winning almost every hobby-shop model contest around- and were eventually banned from a few. Before long we had our drivers licenses and real cars to fool around with. My first car was a '47 Plymoth sedan that leaked a quart of oil a day and smoked two more out the tailpipe. That was followed by a '55 Ford Tudor with a 312ci T-Bird engine and trans., and a severe rake. I lettered "Village Vandal" on the trunk lid, much to my mom's grief. I graduated from high school in 1965 and was accepted to the Hussian School of Commercial Art in Philadelphia. I commuted in my recently acquired '39 Ford Deluxe Tudor sedan and spent the next four years learning about commercial art by day, and the workings of a prewar Ford by night. After art school, I landed jobs in various art studios in Philadelphia but found much of the work unrewarding and repetitious. in 1973, I jumped out on my own to give full-time freelance cartooning a try. I'd always been a major fan of Pete Millar and Petersen CARtoons, so I dropped it into gear. Eventually, editor Dennis Ellefson gave me the opportunity to do some of my reoccurring characters. I created Krass and Bernie, largely patterned after my brother and me. They ripped apart and rebuilt tons of wild rods for the next 20 years...and I loved it! During this period I also produced hundreds of cartoons and humorous illustrations for various other car magazines including Rod & Custom. My other work has been published in a variety of magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Saturday Review, National Enquirer, New Woman, and Hustler. Unfortunately, I sold the '39 when I began freelance cartooning. My long-time girlfriend, Susan, and I married in 1973, and after buying a house, bought a '40 Ford Deluxe Tudor sedan to work on too.
In 1977, our daughter, Andrea, was born and we sold everything to buy a bigger house on a small lake in Riddley Park, Pennsylvania. In 1989 our son, George III, was born and a new studio was added upstairs with skylights and a balcony overlooking Ridley Lake. I've been thinking it's just about time for another prewar Ford and Georgie thinks it oughta have flames.... The kid's got it !!

By: Joyce Lachaussee HOT! HOT! HOT! that's what we had at the Hardee's Breakfast Cruise In. Hopefully for Cruisin the Coast we'll have cooler temps. Everyone is ready for Cruisin! You just never know what might turn up at the breakfast. Max Smith from Agricola brought this Harley Davidson rocking horse replica which he made. It took him three months to build this for his great grandson. Thanks for sharing your craftwork. In 1971, Eugene Brown married Brenda Moorehead. Eugene had a 1966 Chevelle Malibu that was their Honeymoon transportation. The first time Brenda drove the car, she said it took her all four lanes of 14th Street in Pascagoula to make the turn. She had never driven a car without power steering. Sounds like she was "spoiled". Eugene and Brenda have been looking for a 1966 Chevelle for 10 years. They have looked all over the U.S. and recently found this one just 25 miles from their home in Hurley. This car has the same interior and color as their original. It has a 350 Chevy engine with 355 HP. However, it seems since '71 some things have changed they find the need for cool air, power steering, etc. as they age ever so gracefully. This car was their anniversary gift to each other. We hope you enjoy this car and the memories it invokes.
Phillip Calhoun of Semmes brought this 1956 Chevy Bel Air 2 door sedan he just purchased from Tulsa, OK. This '56 has a 350 with power steering, ac and power brakes and is a 4 speed. Phillip has a '30 Model A Ford Coupe, a '38 Ford Coupe and is working on a '36 Ford truck. I asked Philip why he bought a Chevy with all the Fords in his corral. He was quick to tell me they all had CHEVY engines! Mike Robinson of Gulfport brought this '46 Ford (what he calls a Phantom). In its previous life, it was a 2 door sedan and has been a truck since 1989. Mike did this entire "refab". He is proud to say this truck has only been trailered once. This "phantom" was meant to drive and that's exactly what Mike does. Thanks for making the drive from Gulfport. Another Gulfport car aficionado, Bob Sherlock, made the drive in this sharp looking 1968 Chevy El Camino he bought from Gene Whitney of Wiggins 5 years ago. This El Camino has a 327 with power steering, vintage air and disc brakes. What a clean looking engine. We hope to see you again. Please join us next month for the Hardee's Breakfast Cruise In and Swap Meet. Also put on your calendar a TWO DAY SWAP MEET and CAR CORRAL on October 19th and 20th at DY Performance on Hwy 63 in Lucedale, MS. The car corral is free and spaces for swap meet will be available for a small fee.

Hey y'all, I got the opportunity to make some fast cash working at the Wilson County Fair in Lebanon, TN for a fine couple, Mike and Melinda Forbes. I went with a couple of my friends, Jeff and Frank. They have been working with them for decades. They even let us stay at their wedding and event venue "The Everlasting Pond" They have a facebook, its absolutely beautiful! They have a 2,400 square foot lighted pavilion that sits behind The Everlasting Pond. The trail around the pond is lovely and so relaxing. The home it's self is gorgeous. Everything can be sectioned off so you just rent what you will need. I bet some lovely memories have been made here! Back to the job, Myself and my two friends ran a Italian / Polish sausage stand. It was such a cute booth, it had to have been made in the 50's. Bright lights and yellow Formica counter tops.
I did get to try all kinds of interesting food while I was there. the chocolate-dipped cheesecake was my favorite dessert with the fried moon pies in second. Our Italian Sausages with peppers and onions was absolutely delicious! They had these things called "the walking taco", man that was good! It's a small bag of corn chips cut long ways with all the regular taco fixins in it plus more. Very easy to eat while you walk around. When I walked in Saturday morning I was surprised to see a great car show, mostly midcentury cars... I was feeling worn out and this was just what I needed to get my adrenaline running! The whole reason for this trip was to make some extra cash to put into my classic cars. There was lots of live stock, they even had Ayam Cemoni Chickens. There was a sweet cow I would Moo at every morning and night. what a sweet heart, sometimes she would even Moo back. On the last day I finally saw the sea lions, so cute! They had a camel and monkey shows. There were lots of old houses set up as different places, Dr.'s office, Jail, School etc.... They even had a broom making shop that you could get your own made. Reminded me of Little house on the Prairie. All the antiques made me home sick! There was 1/4 of the Fair that I didn't get the time to see. There is always next year, If the family can survive with out me, the old man said it was hard keeping up with all my chores while I was gone. I missed my family and my house but not the chores, lol This was a very big change from my regular 1950's house wife life style. Definitely an adventure, I hope my next trip will be a car show, hopefully I can get my "new" 67 Dodge Dart on the road. Later Guys and Gals Cherry Lou

It's the start of Cruizin the Coast. One of my favorite times of the year. If I am not cruising the highway I can be found volunteering at Cruise Central or in downtown Bay St. Louis Ms. However for only three times if memory serves me well, I will not be a participant/ volunteer. The first Cruizin the Coast I missed out on was in 97, I had just got my first roadster rolling and moving around when the transmission completely got destroyed, due to my error. The next one I missed was due to a scheduled hip replacement seems like a few short years ago. And now this year due to a trip the Queen has planned for us for quite some time now, more on that next month. As you can tell I have been involved in this Cruizin the Coast fun with cars party for a long time. I always look forward to seeing all of the cars coming through the venues, and having fun greeting and at times chatting with the out of town folks. Usually I just take a day away from the volunteering and just ride the roads going to the different stops. And let's not forget the annual stop at the Coliseum for the swap meet that takes place, I find this to be one event I just can't pass up. So as you are enjoying the scenic ride along the beautiful, Ms. Gulf Coast, remember one thing please, all of the folks you encounter wearing the yellow Staff shirts are volunteers. They have given up their fun with cars so that you may be able to enjoy yours. I will be praying all of you have a trouble free week of this event, and also be advised if the mechanical gremlins try to mess your fun up, these same folks can and will be able to help you out if at all possible, because most if not all of them are car, truck, and hot rod people. This great time could not be had without the dedicated volunteers that help to pull this off. So if any of you have a chance, give them a big thumbs up and a Thank You. I am wishing you all a great time for this year's edition of Cruizin the Coast. Later from the Carriage house, the once again traveling Gizmo's.

Fender Skirts: What a great blast from the past! I haven't thought about "fender skirts" in years. When I was a kid, I considered it such a funny term. Made me think of a car in a dress. Thinking about "fender skirts" started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice. Like "curb feelers" and "steering knobs." Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Any kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you. Remember "Continental kits?" They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental. When did we quit calling them "emergency brakes?" At some point "parking brake" became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with "emergency brake." I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the "foot feed." Didn't you ever wait at the street for your daddy to come home, so you could ride the "running board" up to the house? Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore - "store-bought." Of course, just about everything is storebought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy. "Coast to coast" is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term "worldwide" for granted. This floors me. On a smaller scale, "wall-to-wall" was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure. When's the last time you heard the quaint phrase "in a family way?" It's hard to imagine that the word "pregnant" was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company. So we had all that talk about stork visits and "being in a family way" or simply "expecting." Apparently "brassiere" is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it's just "bra" now. "Unmentionables" probably wouldn't be understood at all. It's hard to recall that this word was once said in a whisper "divorce." And no one is called a "divorcee" anymore. Certainly not a "gay divorcee." Come to think of it, "confirmed bachelors" and "career girls" are long gone, too. I always loved going to the "picture show," but I considered "movie" an affectation. Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure-'60s word I came across the other day - "rat fink." Ooh, what a nasty put -down! Here's a word I miss - "percolator." That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? "Coffeemaker." How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this. I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like "DynaFlow" and "ElectraLuxe." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with "SpectraVision!" Food for thought - Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening their kids with castor oil anymore. Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most - "supper. " Now everybody says "dinner." Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts.

Sparked by television shows about classic cars, restorations and customization, the auto enthusiast hobby is alive and well like never before. Since the middle of the last century, car clubs have brought people together to share in the admiration and love of their vehicles, and these organizations, both big and small in membership, are still considered to be a cornerstone of our beloved obsession with automobiles. Fellowship with our peers to drive together, share knowledge, attend events, and some occasional “one-upmanship”, are healthy ways for us car people maintain our devotion to this hobby and lifestyle. Car clubs also provide a nudge to those who are considering purchasing a hobby car for mere pleasure. Now pay attention here all you auto manufacturers, when someone is thinking “those Mopar guys look like they are always having a great time”, it just might be influencing the purchase of that classic or modern muscle car they have always dreamed of, or reinforcing brand loyalty. Car clubs also provide recreational opportunities for folks or families who may never enter the hobby, but just enjoy seeing a lineup of awesome cars at a weekend car show or cruise night. All that being said, car clubs are way to build lifelong friendships and provide significant support to sustain and grow the automobile enthusiast hobby. Like any other recreational organization, car clubs serve a purpose to their members, however even with the best intentions, clubs can sometimes fall short to deliver on expectations, which is the reason I was compelled to write this article. If you are experiencing some “rusting”, in your club or the decline in membership, take note of these observations and advice to help you maintain or even boost your club up to the next level. Members are Customers I have spent the last 25 plus years of my professional career managing and training people in customer service, so it’s natural of me to think that anyone who pays a membership fee to join a club should be treated more like a customer! Everyone in the club shares the common bond in the love and obsession of their cars, and with that common interest, everyone should do their best to be friendly and communicative with one another, especially with new and prospective members. The combination of swapping knowledge and experiences with our cars, along with social interaction, is the main reason people join a car club. While we aren’t all perfect, and certainly have differences in our approach to social situations, club members always want to feel welcome and part of the gang. How many of your club members only attended one meeting or activity or did not renew their membership? This is a likely a sign that maybe the club was not a good “fit” for them for numerous reasons. Hopefully you did everything you could to make them feel welcomed and included in the group. Communication - Car people come in all ages and backgrounds, and with that, different skills and habits for distributing and consuming information. There was, and perhaps still is, a time when car clubs printed and mailed monthly newsletters to its members to announce the goings on with the club. Then along came e-mail, websites, and social media and smart phones as cheaper, easier, and quicker ways to keep members informed in more real time. Unfortunately old habits die hard, and new skills are sometimes slow to adopt. Car clubs can be challenged in communicating with their members via this vast array of digital information delivery systems. The best advice I can give any organization is to be over communicative and use all possible forms of information delivery to stay in touch with your members. Hold regular face-to-face club meetings, send out emails, create social media event postings and maintain your club website. Sharing the same information via multiple outlets gives members more options on how they receive club updates, and it’s not difficult to add one or two more mediums to your club messaging. Remind your members of upcoming events throughout the month so you can drive up attendance by making sure that everyone has had the chance to see any communications from the club.
14
OCTOBER 2018
Be as precise as possible in your communication, but always leave a phone contact in case someone didn’t quite understand or has questions you might not have thought of. Encourage feedback on communications to make sure members are receiving what they want or need to hear from the club. Also use these new digital mediums to share some of you club communications and promote your club the general public. Remember all of your non-club members out there are potential members! And you want them to join right? Multiple channels of communication may be challenging for some clubs, so that’s why I have a few suggestions for your club’s leadership roles in the next section. Club Leadership What are your club’s leadership roles and who is filling them? Do you have a board of directors, or something less formal? Many clubs are led with a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. While this a generally accepted model for any small social or nonprofit organizations, perhaps your club should rename and redefine the leadership roles with skills that are more aligned to what they actually do. Here are some suggestions. President – The leader of the club who organizes and motivates everyone else, and is the biggest advocate of the club. They should lead all the meetings, rally and energize the members, and drive the direction in the club. Secretary / Treasurer - This is an important and necessary business administrative role all rolled into one. This person should handle the club accounting, insurance, tax filings and any monetary transactions at club events and any other business dealings. Communications Director – If not the President of the club, this person is in charge of written communication with the club members and the general public on all things club related as mentioned in the section above. They should monitor and manage inbound and outbound messages the club email inbox, website and social media feeds, as well as update the club website. Finding the right person in your club membership with these skills is important! Membership Director – The person should handle all membership renewals, as well as recruiting, acknowledging, and welcoming new members. Event Coordinators – These are the people in your club who plan and coordinate events, either as a group or as one person / one event. You would be surprised that when asked, some members in your club will jump right into this role. Every person in these leadership roles should all be aligned to fulfill the clubs purpose of providing the best experience for the members. Obviously for smaller clubs, these positions can be consolidated and the functions distributed equally. Burnout Who wouldn’t want to do a smoky burnout now and then? This is not the tire shredding kind you are thinking of. Whether it’s the club leadership who may get overwhelmed and underappreciated, to the members who essentially get tired of the club, these issues require clubs to be proactive and detect and address these symptoms before members or leaders leave. Take note that generally once a member leaves, it’s difficult to get them back. Everyone wants to be recognized for their contributions and involvement in any organization. If you have members and leaders who commit a lot of time and energy, and are doing a great job, let them know with some formal and public recognition! This will also encourage others to step up knowing they too may receive special recognition. Burnouts can also come from doing the same thing over and over, or, not doing much at all. Many clubs repeat the same events month-aftermonth and year-after-year without much change. While certain events are worthy of repeat performances, some may not be. Take a look at your event attendance and always solicit feedback from members during or right after an event. Consider these suggestions when it comes to activities and events.
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
Be open and discuss new ideas from your members. Have more events more often to give everyone a chance to participate. Update your club activities with a new twists such as side games, challenges or prizes. Host public events to drawn in outsiders who may be prospective members. Find new ways to give back to your community and support a cause. This not only provides your members an additional sense of purpose, but it also raises the visibility of your club to attract club sponsors and new members. Spend time scouting out new event venues or road trips. In fact scouting itself can be a fun activity. Join in or invite other car clubs to participate in events. Recognize and spotlight your member’s awesome cars in your club news or social media feeds. Take lots and lots of pictures at your events and make them available to the public. This is also another way to memorialize the good times and a great way to attract new people! Competition Four guys with yellow Mustangs form the “Mella Yella” ‘Stangs Club. Ok this may sound like the beginning of a bad bar room joke, but in this form or another, segmented or specialty clubs are on the rise. Why? Because they either didn’t know your club existed, or your club was not a good fit for them, possibly for the reasons I mention in the article. First, if no one knows your clubs exists, then this is definitely something your club should change and it’s easy to do. First make sure your club web page and social media pages have consistent and detailed information about your club. If your club does driving or race events, or supports a charitable cause, or just does the occasional drive and lunch make sure you state that about yourselves so any potential reader knows what to expect when they join. Remember, you are trying to make your
club appealing to non-members so it’s OK to be a little self-promoting. Also get out and attend all your local car events and pass out business cards, talk to people and let them know you would want them as a member. Nothing is better than extending a personal invitation. Sometimes strength in numbers can also work to your advantage. As in the corporate world, rather than transforming from the inside out, you might consider merging with another club and working together as a larger entity to attract more members. Ask yourself right now, would you rather join a club that has 10 members or 100? It’s a no brainer that clubs with higher membership attract more new members. This again is about feeling like you are part of a larger family. While there may be exceptions to this formula, more cars + more people = more fun. Again, while your club may seem like it’s on the right track, it’s never bad to find ways to keep it fresh and energetic to keep it running on all cylinders. The worst mistake any club can make is maintaining and attitude of “it has always worked that way in the past”. Remember, changing things up is good and necessary at times, and will ultimately will keep more people engaged and interested in our hobby for years to come.

By Candy Cocktail It is hard to believe we have only been commuting on four wheels for 110 years. That is correct, it was exactly 110 years ago this month that Henry Ford debuted his 1908 Model T and the world has never been the same. Born on a Michigan farm in 1863, Ford Motor Company founder Henry Ford had experience working as a machinist, operating and servicing steam engines and then worked as a chief engineer for the Edison Illuminating Company in Detroit before creating Ford.
affordable or accessible to the masses. Between 1908 and 1927, 15,458,781 were built. With a starting price of $825 for the Runabout model, by 1925 the price dropped to $260 thanks in part to the modernized assembly line. Roaring into the history books, the wildly successful Model T, also known as Flivver was a technical and commercial triumph that brought driving to the masses as it literally transformed America's landscape. In 1908, there were only a mere 18,000 miles of paved roads in the US. “Street paving accelerated and building of the nation's vast network of roadways began in earnest. Street lights, road signs and a whole new array of roadside businesses sprouted, including the nowubiquitous gas station. from history.com
In the shed behind his home, Henry Ford built his first gasoline-powered horseless carriage, the Quadricycle, which consisted of a light metal frame with four bicycle wheels powered by a two-cylinder, four-horsepower gasoline engine. Establishing Ford Motor Company in 1903 and rolling out the most iconic of Ford creations five years later, the Model T is the vehicle that put the world on wheels.
October 1, 1908 The Model T goes into production. The Model T was an automobile built by the Ford Motor Company from 1908 until 1927. Assemblyline production allowed the price of the touring car version to be lowered from $850 in 1908 to less than $300 in 1925. At such prices the Model T at times comprised as much as 40 percent of all cars sold in the United States. Ford.com stated that at the time the 'Tin Lizzie' came out, the automobiles in existence were luxurious novelties and not

In 1913, the world's first moving assembly line for cars was used. Famous for his development of the assembly line technique of mass production, Ford not only revolutionized mass production, but he was first to use standardized, interchangeable parts. History.com explained how Ford revolutionized industry at large with the assembly-line production that helped speed up manufacturing and push prices down, giving people who never thought
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
they would be able to drive or afford the new mean of transportation an opportunity to purchase his vehicle. The Model T was built with a 20 horsepower engine, light, affordable vanadium steel that offered rugged durability and a supple suspension that stood up to the era's potholed wagon roads at top speeds of 40 to 45 miles per hour. In the Model T's early years they were offered in red, green, gray and blue, which required multiple paint coats with time between coats to dry and sand. Recognizing how much time and money this cost, the fast curing black color became the only color offered from 1914 to 1926. According to history.com, the moving assembly line Ford pioneered required repetitive tasks that were boring at a wage of about $2.25 per 9-hour workday, where turnover killed productivity and workers sometimes just walked away from their stations, bringing the entire line to a halt. So Ford did something unusual for that time, he raised the wage to $5 per day and cut the workday to eight hours. It is said that just one day after it was announced, 10,000 people showed up at the Ford plant looking for $5-a-day employment, which in turn solved the turnover problem and increased assembly line efficiency.
Where failures often influence future successes, Ford ceased production of the Model T and in 1927 introduced the Model A, which boasted several improvements, including better horsepower and brakes. Ford did not just create cars. In 1925 the company began production of Ford TriMotor airplanes, nicknamed 'Tin Goose.'
In 1954, Ford introduced one of my personal favorites, the iconic, classic Thunderbird. The first production car came off the line on September 9, 1954, and went on sale on October 22, 1954 as a 1955 model, and sold briskly; 3,500 and the 1956-57 with its distinctive porthole windows.
In 1932, Ford was also the first to introduce the flathead V-8 engine. To date, the flathead remains extremely popular with hot rodders. In 1942, Ford halted civilian vehicle production to produce military equipment. The timeline of the Ford website describes how Ford facilities built a staggering number of cars, planes, aircraft engines, tanks and other material for the war effort. The site said that by the end of WWII, Ford had produced over 8,000 B-24 Liberator bombers. In 1941, Ford produced Jeeps for the US military which were nicknamed for their 'GP,' or generalpurpose designation.
The Mustang was the first to have a mass media advertising campaign. Ford spent millions in just the first year. The Ford Mustang became one of the vehicles that has been in continuous manufacturing for more than 50 years, a great feat. The 1962 Ford Mustang I concept was a 2seater car that became a 4-seater car in the 1963 Mustang II.
As cited on moneyinc.com, the design of the Ford Mustang was the first in the “pony car class of American automobiles. The pony car genre cars were affordable compact sports car coupes with short rear decks and long hoods. A design that inspired competitors like the Chevrolet Camaro, Plymouth Barracuda, Dodge Challenger, Toyota Celica and the Pontiac Firebird. Nonetheless an iconic motor vehicle company, Ford owns or has a stake in
several other companies. As stated on pinesford.com, Ford's additional businesses include Ford Motor Land Development, Ford Motor Credit Company, Jiangling Motors in China, Brazilian SUV manufacturer Troller, Japan based Mazda (Ford used to have a 33% stake but it is now only 2.1% stake), an 8% stake in Aston Martin, Lincoln Motor Company (which is actually a division of Ford) and Motorcraft (another Ford division that develops parts and sells motor oil). Still headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, near Detroit, Ford has manufacturing and distribution operations in six continents with nearly 200,000 employees and 67 plants. Ford is now making a 475 horsepower bullet tribute car for 2019. With a 47 grand price tag, it even comes in racing green to commemorate the 1968 Steve McQueen classic film, Bullitt.
In 1944, Rose Will Monroe was working as a rivet gun operator at Ford's Willow Run plant where workers constructed B-24 bombers when she was selected to appear in a promotional film for war bonds. Rose became the personification of the fictional, yet infamous 'Rosie the Riveter' character as depicted in the iconic 'We Can Do It!' posters that so many have come to love for changing the landscapes of women in the workplace forever. Rose Will Monroe went on to get her pilots license and became one of the most recognized icons of the era.

Welcome to the 22nd annual Cruisin The Coast, the USA Today Number 1 Car Show in America for 2018. We’ll register once again over 8,000 classic cars and thousands more come that can’t register because they aren’t old enough or that just don’t register. Besides being able to drive in and park in the venues, registered cars also have a chance to win in between 35-40 drawings of $500 at the end of the show if you hit all the stops and get your stamped card turned in on time. The biggest reason to register your classic car is support for America’s Largest Block Party! When you have something this good you want to support it. Join us for the Official Kickoff of Cruisin The Coast, View The Cruise in downtown Gulfport on Sunday September 30. Be there for the blessing of the Cruisers, the heart touching Veterans Tribute and National Anthem at 10:00 AM on Hwy 49 across from the Half Shell Oyster House. We invite all Veterans to be there to participate and all patriotic Americans to be there to honor these Veterans. Bring your camera it’s a great photo op. We will also be attempting to Facebook Live the Hot Rod Show starting at 10 AM. Four Live music stages of music will be going on… with great restaurants and bars in a fantastic downtown setting. A couple thousand cruisers and an estimated crowd last year of 20,000 people make it a huge party. Special thanks to the Hot Rod Show sponsors that make this event special, Auto Zone, Dad’s Super Pawn, William Smith Paint and Body, Performance Tire and Wheel, Headliners Plus, Southern Camper Sales and Bud McQueen’s National Muffler. My advice to all cruisers is to get there early as you can to get a parking spot. We have worked this year on keeping the show open for cruisers, so you can cruise through and grab an empty parking spot if someone leaves. Please do not do burnouts or show out while in the show, if could cause police to close down the cruisers coming thru in the interest of safety. We need to monitor our own, so the police don’t have to! We also ask all Cruisers to honor our elderly Veterans…each year on Tuesday of Cruisin The Coast, the Armed Forces Retirement Home located at 1800 Beach Dr (hwy 90) in Gulfport (west of Edgewater Mall) gets all the old Veterans outside and cruisers cruise through so the Veterans can see the cars. It’s their only opportunity to see the cars in most cases. The Veterans really enjoy seeing the cars, bringing back all their old memories. The Armed Forces Retirement Home has been doing this for many years, but since it’s not an official Cruisin The Coast event, it’s had less and less attention each year. Very few cruisers participated last year, out of sight, out of mind. We’re all trying to get the event back going again this year. Please swing through the retirement home for these the greatest generation of Americans Patriots to see your car. You will see firsthand the joy you bring to these old soldiers. That’s Tuesday October 2, beginning at 2 pm. Once again the address is 1800 Beach Drive in Gulfport.
My guide to Cruisin The Coast… Sunday - View The Cruise – downtown Gulfport 10 am until 4 pm. Cristy Lee. Cruisers get there early. Monday - Long Beach Parade of Cruisers, the Tip Tops on the stage at 6 pm in the Long Beach Harbor. Tuesday - Veterans Retirement Home starting at 2 pm. Flame Throwing Competition at Island View Casino Gulfport, starts 4 pm. Wednesday - Biloxi Block Party, Cruisers get there early for parking. Thursday - Hit the stops and get your card stamped before Friday traffic hits and slows you down greatly. Friday - Hit the Cruisin The Coast Swap Meet at Coliseum. Check venues schedule of entertainment to find where your favorite bands will be playing and of course cruising Hwy 90. Saturday - Check venues schedule of entertainment to find where your favorite bands will be playing, cruising Hwy 90. Please keep safety in mind during Cruisin The Coast, police will ticket you for doing burnouts. It’s all about safety, all it takes is one car with an idiot behind the wheel to hurt someone and mess it up for all of us. Please, please be safe and protect our incredible event! Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show will be also be playing at the Coliseum Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the Cruisin The Coast Swap Meet. Please stop by the Hot Rod Show trailer and say hello. I stay real busy during the show, but once I set up my next elements of the show, I usually have a couple minutes to talk, before I have to do it all over again. Some of you I only get to see during Cruisin The Coast so I really enjoy seeing everyone. Once again welcome to Cruisin The Coast, the USA Today Number 1 Car Show in America. We’re looking forward to seeing you and your Hot Rod once again! Enjoy some of my favorite Cruisin The Coast photos from over the years…. til next month…

Father and Son Adventure I was inspired by this father and son story. It was told to me by Chris Todd. We don't always know what gives our friends and fellow rodders their incentive. We feel we know them well, but the truth is that we don't always know why they are such avid enthusiasts. Here is a story about a “Car Guy” and friend. Most of us were exposed to hot rods, race cars and cool cars at a young age. Chris was no exception. His grandfather was a hot rod enthusiast, so this was passed along to his dad, Bob, and then to Chris. I believe as pre-teens we get ideas of building the perfect custom car. We read magazines, look at the photos, and imagine that every car we see could look better with some custom treatments. Chris only needed a car to apply his vision to. 1981 or 1982 brought this 1954 Chevrolet 150, two door sedan into the Todd family. This was to be a father and son project. The car was purchased in Bloomington, IN and taken to Chris's grandmother's garage for resurrection. The collection of parts for the build had begun. This took some time. Life, work, and other distractions always come into play. It was around 1998 when time permitted the restoration of the '54. Bob had health issues and had to slow down. Chris worked even harder and became more obsessive about the build, because he feared the father and son project was taking longer than he had planned. Chris wanted his dad to see the car finished. Keep in mind this is a home built project in a family garage. Finally, the 1954 Chevrolet was completed and painted in 2004. What a gem! This rod is two-tone silver and gray with rally wheels. It has a 350 cubic inch engine with a 350 turbo transmission. It features disc brakes on the front, and a rear end from a 1975 Firebird. Dual exhaust gives this ride the proper statement of power. This family build features custom upholstery by Ray Roach. It was painted by D&D in Danville, IN. The pin striping on this bad boy is amazing. Bob and Chris were able to enjoy the Chevy together for 3 or 4 summers. Mr. Todd really appreciated this 1954. Bob Todd left his earthly body in 2010 and Chris, his mother and the rest of the family miss him dearly. They know he is keeping tabs on them from Heaven, though, and that he is proud of this automobile. Chris still drives this 1954 to shows, but most of the time it is tucked away in his garage. The memories of the life he had with his dad are remembered every time he looks at it in the garage or takes it out for a drive. The car remains in the condition it was in when his father passed away. Chris says: “God Speed Pop…Rodders Rule!” Any of you who have had the opportunity to work with family members on a build understand how important this can be. It is a blessing to have memories of family that last forever. A father is worth much more than 20 school teachers. A DAD is worth more than that!

On Saturday, September 15, 2018, Combel’s Customs Cruisers Car Club (“CCC”) in Marrero, Louisiana held their 2nd Annual Benefit Car Show for No One Fights Alone (“NOFA”). NOFA is a non-profit organization which works to help with the expenses that come with a cancer diagnosis. Recognizing that expenses can readily exceed insurance coverage, NOFA assists with the bills incurred for everything from treatment and medicines to travel expenses. They believe that cancer families have enough to worry about and paying the bills should not be on that list. Members of the CCC presented NOFA with a check for $41,212.72 from their inaugural car show last year and they hope that this year will be even more successful. In addition to registration fees for the 108 vehicles entered, there were food and drink sales, a live auction, 50/50 raffle and a huge parade of prizes.

Though the clouds were heavy and dark, but the rain held off as people brought their classic cars from across Texoma to show off at this month’s Cars and Coffee. The gathering was as strong as ever with this month’s meet being all about new faces, new classics, and new events. Walking around talking people, you never know what you are going to learn or who you are going to run into. Here are a few of the absolutely random things I learned while talking to other car enthusiasts at this month’s meet: 1.) Three-quarters of all Rolls Royces produced are still on the road; 2.) Henry Ford once built a car out of soybeans (which I later confirmed is true -- In 1941, Ford took 2000 lbs. of beans, glued them to plastic panels, and attached the bean covered panels to the frame. Why either of us need to know this, I don’t know. But now you do); and 3.) Some new cars “play” engine noises through the speakers when the car starts so it sounds as if the car makes noise, but there is no actual engine noise produced. This month’s meet was a spontaneous 4x4 show with a 1968 Toyota FJ40 with ambulance doors on the back, a 1980 CJ 7 with the original motor and door panels, a 2012 Jeep Wrangler, a Jeep Cherokee with wood panel sides, as well as an Ford International were on display. Check out the Chevy Bel Air with the gorgeous ombre, white-to-yellow custom paint (opposite page) which pulled up as the morning was getting started. Several of us ladies oo-ed and awed over its white hood and bright yellow fins. Then there was Moe, the beautiful, cherry red cruiser (opposite column) which with the spiffy running boards. Before this month’s raffle, Jay Connelly announced the return of Cruisin’ Main. Who can forget the days of riding around Main Street with your friends, with the music up and the windows down? Remember the days when Main Street looked like a showroom and the local drive-in had the best burgers in town? Now on the second of every month, Texoma Cars & Coffee will kick off the day at 8:00 a.m. and with Cruisin’ Main to start at 6:00 p.m. as the perfect cap to the day. From the drive-in to the Skid Row Auto Shop, everyone who wants to participate is welcome to come drive through downtown, have an amazing burger and shake, and a wonderful, family-friendly time. And….To celebrate native son, Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 128th Birthday everyone who participates in next month’s Texoma Cars & Coffee on October 13, 2018, has been invited to parade from downtown Denison to Eisenhower’s Birthplace at (609 S Lamar Avenue) for the birthday celebration and car show! So, come on down and show how much we still like Ike! Can’t wait to see you there!

Foot Notes II By Lynne Lightfoot In a nondescript garage in Old Gretna, Louisiana, there is some really special motor scooter customization going on. About 3 years ago, Chad Caro saw a custom scooter and was immediately taken in. He went home, did internet research and decided he was going to build one. Along the way, through a mutual friend, he met Johnny Flettrich, Jr. Johnny had also seen one of these scooters and had to have one of his own. After lots of rides together and hours spent customizing scooters, they joined with friends Warren (last name withheld because he’s shy) and Jordan Mendez, opened NOLA Scooter Werx. These guys all have extensive experience customizing cars, trucks and even skateboards, and they were excited to get creative with Scooters. Despite having full-time jobs, they show up at the garage every evening and weekends. They have very understanding wives and girlfriends.
There are custom scooter shops in California and Florida, but they believe they are the only shop anywhere in between. Customers have come from Louisiana, Texas, Florida and Arkansas so far. Basic scooter packages start at about $3,500 and go up from there. The average time for a scooter is about 3 months. Extreme projects have taken longer. These guys pride themselves on their work. No two scooters look alike or like anything else you’ve seen. If they can’t get a part they need, they make it or repurpose parts from other vehicles.
Chad loves his work. Their creations are called Met-Rucks. The frames are a combination of the front end of a Honda Metropolitan and the rear end of a Honda Ruckus. They are not full-sized motorcycles and, at 49cc, they don’t require a motorcycle endorsement in most places. The scooters are stretched, lowered, and fully customized to the buyer’s specifications. Honda Metropolitan
Honda Ruckus
One of their scooters, Willie C’s Icebear Maddog Trike with a 232 CC GGy6 engine, recently took Best in Show in a Florida Motorcycle Show. We can see why.
Willie C’s Icebear Maddog Trike While some of their customized scooters can reach speeds of 100+ mph, riding one of these lowriding scooters at that speed would take serious courage or foolishness.

Talking with Chad and Johnny you can hear how excited they are about what they do. While they love to ride, they take the most joy out of the build. They really love taking someone’s drawing or idea and making it come to fruition. When a customer tells them that the scooter is even better than they had dreamed, they beam with pride.
While Met-Rucks are their specialty, they are starting to work on customizing Honda Grom’s too.
While their average customer is between the ages of 25 and 55, these rides aren’t just for the guys. They’ve done some terrific work for the ladies, too. Boudreaux won a free ticket to the Saints football game.. when he got there, he found that his seat was in the nosebleed section behind the end zone. A really bad seat from which to see all the action. After a while he decided to walk around the stadium and noticed an empty seat right on the fifty yard line. He made his way to it and asked the man in the seat next to it, "Hey my friend, is dis seat taken?" The man replied that it wasn't, so Boudreaux sat down. A few minutes passed, and Boudreaux remarked that it had to be one of the best seats in the stadium, and that whoever gave it up must be nuts. The man tells him, "Well, it was my wife's seat, but she died." Boudreaux felt real bad, and tried to make the man feel better, "Well, you could have got one of your relatives to come wit you." The man says, "None of them could make the game. They're all at the funeral !"

OCTOBER 2018

Welcome back everyone! Since I signed off last month, Chase has celebrated his 15th birthday! I want to wish him a very happy birthday, and I also would like to congratulate him on getting his learner’s permit for driving a motor vehicle!!! LOL…now that’s funny! ... WOW!!! He has certainly blown me away with his progression in racing throughout this year. It’s hard to believe that just 1 year ago we were searching for a modified to purchase for him to race! The search for a modified was not as easy as you would think…but that’s a story for another day! Goals, Hopes, and Dreams This month I want to talk about the question Dirt Track Revival … Chavus Holland that I get asked most frequently… ”What are yours and Chase’s racing goals?”… Well this might be a long one! The good news is he and I are on the same page on this subject! First let me break this down into these 3 categories: goals, hopes, and dreams. 1. Goals… This is an easy one, just finish races safely! 95% of the races we’ve finished have resulted in a top 5 or better finish. I keep telling Chase, “You have to be on the track when the checkered flag flies to ever have a shot at winning the race!” This seems so simple, but this has turned out to be the most difficult task that we encounter week after week! BOOM!!!! He’s officially been permitted folks!. 2. Hopes… I/We hope to someday (SOON) find Chase a ride in a racecar that doesn’t belong to us! Sounds crazy right? We love having our own car and would love to continue to own our modified and race it as often as financially possible…however Chase is at the age where he needs/wants more seat time every weekend! We hope to find him a ride in a Crate Late Model in the upcoming season. We would like to pull a weekly double duty, driving both cars each night. The Durrence Lane Crate Late Model Division has a well established national points system. Chase could compete locally while also collecting points nationally against other drivers, both young and old, across the nation! I feel like Chase is at an age now, where these next 3-4 years will mold him into whatever he will be in the future! I would like for him to have the opportunity to get as much experience as possible behind the wheel while he’s young! I just don’t have the money or time to keep 2 cars race ready week after week. Therefore, we are seeking a ride in someone else’s car in addition to racing our modified for the 2019 racing season! 3. Dreams…Just to meet our goals and hopes! That’s it!... This seems easy, but it’s actually a lot tougher than you’d think. You see, this sport, (auto racing) that we are so passionate about, doesn’t have the luxury of having the “gateway platforms” that other sports have. Let me explain…If you chose to play, let’s say baseball for instance, you could possibly make a name for yourself in little league, and likely have different high schools in your area competing/recruiting for your talent to play for their school even before your high school years begin! This would lead to college scouts recruiting for colleges, which would lead to minor/major league scouts recruiting, and so on, until eventually you are signed onto a contract for millions of dollars at a very young age into a sport that you love! Are these guys (baseball players) talented and deserving of this at such a young age? Well certainly they are! I’m not challenging that by any means…but I will say that having these athletes constantly brought into the lime-light by the local news, sports reporters, and sports writers as well as being recruited every step of the way certainly helps. Just imagine if racing had a high school level, college level, and then a professional level and each step had scouts and public attention from local media! When was the last time you saw any form of auto racing (below the NASCAR level) being reported on the news or in the newspaper? It doesn’t happen! I know what you’re probably thinking right now…”What about NASCAR? Isn’t that your “major league” of motorsports?” Well there is a HUGE gap between what we do and NASCAR! They both have pros and cons. NASCAR has an awesome recruiting program, but it takes tons and tons of money to get in front of their scouts! Only a chosen few have the money and talent to catch the eye of the NASCAR level teams. So, I guess what I’m saying is you’ve got just as good a chance of winning the lottery as you do of being offered a NASCAR ride! There are so many levels (platforms) between the beginning stages of motorsports racing and the top! It just takes a bunch of money to move up through the ranks…Sorry, I just started rambling there… The bottom line is this, we (Chase and I) are not the slightest bit interested in trying to land a NASCAR ride! That is not a goal, hope, or dream of mine or Chase’s! We are looking to be the best we can be with the equipment we can afford! I could go on and on, but I’m going to shut it down here for now. We love our dirt track racing and we want to see it continue to roar back to life across the nation! You can help by getting out and supporting your local tracks and or by sponsoring a racing team! It’s a great family sport! I’ve got several other things to talk about… First off, Chase is gearing up as I’m typing this, for a huge race, The Curtis Burns Memorial Race, that he will be competing in on September 22, 2018. (weather permitting) This race will be hosted by Hattiesburg Speedway and it is going to be a 40 lap Modified race with an awesome payout throughout the field and tons of contingency prizes. The winner will also bring home a custom trophy that I built specifically for this event! Chase feels like he has a good shot at being in the top 5 in this race… that makes me excited! As you all know, we’ve had some real strong finishes at Hattiesburg Speedway this season, as well as, too many DNF’s! We’ve come home numerous nights this season with our car destroyed, and the majority of wrecks were unavoidable and/or not our fault! I am extremely proud of Chase overall! There were huge car counts all season in his class and he proved to be a contender for the top positions each week! As I think back from the beginning of this season to where he is today it is truly mind boggling for me! That is why I’m very proud to announce that Chase finished 3rd overall in points at Hattiesburg Speedway!!! Not bad at all for his first full season in his modified, bringing home 1 Feature win this season and numerous top fives! Way to go buddy! Three weeks ago, the first night to race with the new body and graphics on his car, Chase had raced his way through the field of cars in his heat race and was about to take over the first position with 2 laps to go, when he misjudged a skidder tire by 3-4 inches! Of course, this rookie mistake cost us a heat race win, a front row starting position for the feature, and caused lots of damage to Chase’s car! We were able to make repairs and he had to come from the rear of the 19 car field in the Feature, but he still managed to bring us home in 8th place! I, as his dad and #1 fan, would/could (and did) come up with a bucket full of excuses why this slight misjudgment wasn’t his fault…I’ll spare y’all for now! That’s racing though…We’re learning!!! Just 2 weeks ago Chase finished 2nd 30

place in his heat race and a strong 2nd place finish in the feature event! Then, last week, Chase started 10th in a 22 car field and had raced his way to 4th in the feature before an engine failure on a competitors car caused a pile up that involved Chase as he had nowhere to go and no chance to avoid the crash! It ended a good run as it looked like Chase would’ve had the car to beat that night! That’s racing! I hope you all can come out and watch us soon! We got Chase’s new fire suit in and it is AWESOME!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, to ALL of our sponsors!!! As most of you know Chase is sponsored primarily by our business (Bridal and Formal Boutique & House of Tux) as well as another tuxedo company that we sublease tuxedos through (Squires Formalwear), so we ordered him a fire suit that is certainly unique and original to dirt track racing… Y’all check it out!!! Until next time…Chavus One more thing…Our new T-shirts are in and they can be purchased at Bridal and Formal Boutique & House of Tux or at The Ridiculous Speedshop for $20 each!

Every person has a gift to give. It could be knowledge, music, public speaking, art, etc. However, if you don’t give it, it only lasts your lifetime. Share it, and you become immortal.
By: Donna “Sugar Bug” White If you ever get the chance to meet this man in person, do so. He is one of the kindest, gentlest people you will ever encounter. Till the green light comes on. Jessie Frank Holmes was born on October 2, 1953 in Luverne, Alabama. He is the only son of Clinton and Betty Jean (Byrd) Holmes. In 1958, Jessie, his three sisters, and his parents moved to Pensacola, where Jessie still resides today. He was named after the legendary Jesse James and his brother, Frank. As Jessie said, “That automatically makes me a natural-born outlaw”. As early as the 5th grade (1958), he knew that he wanted to be a Ford guy. His father was a mechanic, and Jessie spent many days in his shop learning how to fix cars at a very early age. In 1969, at the age of 16, he went to his first drag race at Pensacola. The two racers he remembers from those times are Aubrey Padgett in “Big Iron” and Ernie Forrester in “Asphalt Assassin”. Two years later in 1971, at the age of 18, Jessie began going to circle track racing at Five-Flags Speedway. After taunting from his friends that he couldn't build a Ford that would keep up, Jessie set out to prove them wrong. He bought a 1963 Ford Fairlane and a trailer for $350.00 in 1972. He took the motor out of his 1966 Mustang street car and put it into the Fairlane. Jessie then let his friend, John Patterson, race the car, and they won their first night out with it. Buddy Griffin drove the car for two years with Jessie and won 21 races. In 1975, Jessie got married and started a family, so he quit racing for a while. In 1977, he went into the auto parts business, and eventually began circle track racing again in 1985. Jessie's first drag car was in 1983 and he ran it first at Atmore, AL. He bought a 1965 Mustang Fastback 351 4-speed, named “Chey”, which was named after the daughter of the man who had
built the car. But, in 2012, Bill Ziel and Jessie bought a Falcon body for $1,000, which had no front end or rear end under it, to replicate the original Coon-Tang. Bill at one time worked for Frank Gulsby, who built the original Coon-Tang in 1965-1966, which had a small block 4-speed 289 engine. The name originated from the nickname of the Falcons years ago, which was “Fal-coons” because they generally ran slow. The “Tang” was added because of the Mustang engine it had. If you spend any time at all with Jessie, you will quickly learn there are two things that are most important in his life. The first is his family. Jessie and Ms. Ruby, who is from Tennessee, got married in 1980. She loves to hang out with her sister-in-law and friends while Jessie races. Although she doesn't go to the races, she supports them 100%. Jessie lovingly describes her as “the best of the best”. She is known for sending banana puddings with him to the races for the Outlaws. Jessie first son was Jeremy, who was born in 1974. He was an avid Ford drag racer. In November of 2013, Jeremy passed away from heart disease, only two months from his 40th birthday. After the loss of Jeremy, Jessie said he read something once that he will always carry with him: “For the few seconds it takes to make a picture, the picture may not mean much at the time. But when it's all you have left, it does mean a lot”. May Jeremy rest in peace. Clint, Jessie's second son, was born in 1975. Previously a circle track racer who won the Snowball derby, he now operates Clint Holmes Automotive in Pensacola, and spends his time with his wife, Kathaleen, and his daughter, Marissa. The second thing that is most important in Jessie's life are his Southern Outlaw Gassers. In 2014, Jessie, Bill Ziel, Glenn Henderson, Tommy Killingsworth, and Tommy Killingsworth Jr. went to dinner after a car show and discussed getting some folks together and run a gasser race at Atmore. They scheduled the first race for November 22, 2014. Eighteen gassers showed up, but they didn't get to run due to rain. Pete Pierce, who has “Wompin' Wagon”, said “Let's all get together and have a big blow out”. Thus, the “Gasser Blow Out” races were born. The rain date for the original race was moved to March 7, 2015 and titled “Gasser Blowout 1” (GBO1). This fall, GBO 8 will be held in Atmore, AL on October 19th and 20th. These races are held twice a year in Atmore, and racers from all over the United States come to it. After a Friday night test and tune, the big day begins on Saturday. From 8:00 AM until 11:00 AM, there is a meet and greet. At 11:00, the

cars pull into the staging lanes, and kids are welcomed to ride down the track with their favorite drivers. The race begins around noon after a prayer and the National Anthem, and typically goes no longer than 6:00 PM. It includes the gassers from 1967 and older (heads-up racing), Jr. dragsters, altered, open wheels, and footbrakes and trans brakes from 1974 and older (bracket racing). There are also grudge races and exhibition passes made. At GBO 7 this year, there were 52 gassers and a total of 156 cars. More are expected for the October race. When Jessie created the Southern Outlaw Gassers, he wanted there to be just a few rules. They are as follows: 1. Have FUN! 2. Cars must look the part of old cars. No late-model wheels (billet wheels), no aero hood scoops or aluminum wings. 3. They do not have to be straight axles. 4. No nitrous. Jessie has two rules of his own made by a couple of the racers: 1. He must get in the tower on the mic and yell at everyone to get to the staging lanes…..after they are already there. 2. He must disappear for at least 15 minutes at a time so everyone can walk around asking “Where's Jessie?” 3. Must bring Ms. Ruby's banana pudding for Chris Cantrell. 4. Must have 1 pound of coffee for Greg Porter. If you would like more information on the Southern Outlaw Gassers, you can contact Jessie by visiting the Southern Outlaw Gassers' Facebook page or watch their videos on YouTube. Jessie says “Get with friends, build a car with what you got and what you can afford, and come have fun. Speed does not matter…it's all about the fun!” One thing many don't know about Jessie is that he often times lets his friends ride with him….in a very special way. Whenever a racer passes away, he takes some of their ashes (with the families' permission) and puts them inside his race car so they can make passes with him. The most recent one was Jerry Hutchens, who had battled terminal cancer for two years. However, Mr. Jerry still drove the past couple years at Brainerd, which meant a lot to him. He asked Jessie if he would let him ride in the Coon-Tang if anything ever happened. So, when Mr. Jerry passed, Jessie found a replicated Ford Motor Co. can, put his ashes inside the can, and said “Here you go, buddy. You can ride with me”. Jessie made it to the finals at Brainerd with Mr. Jerry riding next to him in CoonTang. When I asked Jessie what he wanted his legacy to be, he simply stated to me that he didn't want to be known as a racer…..he wanted to be known for making people happy and providing a place (the Outlaw races) for people to be happy. And if you've ever been to one of their races, you will know that Jessie's legacy will always be carried on through history to be a “long story, longer”. Jessie's message to the Southern Outlaw Gassers: “Look after each other and try to take care of each other. Stay cool and have fun. And most importantly, be a good french fry….it takes all of you to make it a Happy Meal”. Sugar Scoop: This has been the Outlaw's best kept secret for over a month. Beginning this fall, the 1963 Ford Coon-Tang will be powered by Bill Ziel's small-block Ford engine, and will be driven by Bill's wife, Kathy!!! Jessie will be driving the 1957 Ford “Gunsmoke” (Glenn Henderson), and it will have a 406 FE Ford motor with a Ford C4 transmission. I will be Gunsmoke's BUG. We will see ya'll at the races!

South Louisiana Dragway Reunion Car Show & Cacklefest November 30 - December 1, 2018 Parking Lots of Hooters, Outback Steakhouse, Chili's, Walmart 1500-1600 Martin Luther King Blvd Houma LA. 70360 9am - 7pm Down in Bayou Country, in the town of Houma LA there once existed one of the earliest state of the art drag strips, known as Southland Dragway. Since closed in the early 70's, one man, Steve Robichaux (also a racer), had a dream of reliving the days of racing and in 2017, started an event called the Southland Dragway Reunion. Taking over Hooters parking lot along with other businesses nearby, locals and visitors experienced a day of racing nostalgia mixed with a huge car show and racing displays of the likes of stock, prostock, gassers, funny car and dragsters as well as hot rods, street rods, muscle and show cars from around the Bayou Country areas. Folks were able check out all of these great sights as well as meet some famous local racers and even experience the “crackle-fest with nitromethane race cars firing up their engines for exited crowds. With last year's event success, it was clear that Steve had to keep this going and after word got out about the 2017 event, he received calls from all over the country from interested racers who themselves were eager to attend the 2nd Annual event. So much so that 2 other race tracks were included in the Reunion event, LaPlace Dragway and Pel State Dragway. In addition, this years event will have a Bayou Country Car Cruise which will be escorted from Mark Oswald's Speed Shop and throughout a chosen route to take in all of the beauty and scenery known as Bayou Country. This ride will end at the Houma/ Terrebonne Civic Center at 346 Civic Center Blvd. on Friday, November 30, 2018, where attendees will participate in the Friday Night Meet and Greet, offering food and drink, show car and race car displays, open mike for story telling with racers along with memorabilia display and vintage dragway photos. on Saturday, December 1st from 9am 7pm. The Reunion will be held, between 1500-1600 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Houma, LA. Parking the Hooters, Outback Steakhouse, Chili's and Walmart Parking lots. Info call Charlie 601528-1172 October 14 Spanish Fort, AL. Rat Rods on the River to be held at the 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center, 30945 5 Rivers Blvd, Spanish Fort, AL 36527. A long awaited talked about sequel has finally arrived. This year we hope to have 8 rat rods, 8 photographers and 12 models. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a legal guardian present, all models will be required to sign a model release. Because 5 rivers will be posting information about the event, and any photographs we send them afterwards. A presigned model release also helps because we are currently in negotiation with a local race magazine to publish photographs taken at this event. Please keep in mind even though rat rods are the fantastically perfect automobile to wear anything from mad Max to evening gowns with pinup in between, members of the public may be enjoying the park for the day and some of our models may be under the age of 18 appropriate attire will be mandatory. Five rivers will not be charging us to host the event but a $10 donation, to the women’s shelter of Mobile will hold and guarantee your spot for that day. If you have questions on the outfit please contact Photoguy Kt or Vivian Vow on Facebook.

OCTOBER 27th at DREAMER'S LOUNGE, LONG BEACH Check out the New and upcoming rock band right here on the Gulf Coast, LUNATyPE! Their Music is influenced by all generes of rock. Playing a collection of originals, LUNATyPE brings energy to the stage and keeps the audience intensely engaged during the show. Matt Dillon on guitar and lead vocals writes about the forebodings in the back of our minds, replacing the negative with a positive spin. In the rhythm section, Dave Reilly, carries bottom end bass lines and Joey Dewitt, keeps time with his dynamic drumming skills. On lead guitar, Jesse Lizana sweeps across the fretboard charismatically. LUNATyPE brings the rock sound to feed that little monster we keep caged inside. The groups first produced video for their original single “Reawakening” can be viewed on YouTube. The members of this up and coming, dynamic group, would like to give an appreciative shout out to Dreamer's Lounge, Long Beach, MS and MythicCadre Films for their never ending support. Check them out at www.facebook.com/ LUNATYPEofficial See LUNATyPE live Saturday, October 27th for their Halloween Bash at Dreamer's Lounge, 1036 E. Railroad St., Long Beach, MS.
