Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine You’ll never feel good about who you are as long as you’re competing with others. Somebody will always be more beautiful, more talented, more successful. That’s a peace stealer. Put up a boundary and say, “I’m not going to live in somebody else’s world, obsessed with what they’re doing, where they’re going, what they’re wearing, what they’re eating. I’m going to run my race.” You can miss your destiny caught up in somebody else’s life. Successful people are too busy running their race to look around and see what everybody else is doing. Quit comparing; it’s going to pull you out of that place of rest. We all face pressure; we all have times we feel overwhelmed and think it’s too much. The reason you have big opposition is because you have a big destiny. The good news is God took all that into account when He designed your infrastructure. He didn’t give you a big future with weak walls, with a small foundation, with little beams. You’ve got what it takes. You’re stronger than you think. You have more endurance, more stamina, more grace, more forgiveness. You can’t play negative, defeating, limiting words, and reach your potential. Words are like seeds. They have power. If you let them take root, they’ll grow and become what was said. That’s great when they’re positive, pushing you forward, but every person has negative words spoken over them, people that will try to hold you back, discourage you. Delete the negative and become who God created you to be. It may be taking longer than you thought, it may be more difficult, but the good news is that it’s not too late. You didn’t miss your chance. What God promised you is still on the way, not a watereddown version, not a substitute blessing, not a make-do promotion, not a partial healing, not a "good enough" marriage. No, exactly what God promised you is on the way. What you were dreaming about before the delays, what you were excited about before the bad breaks, is still in route. God doesn’t abort a dream, He doesn’t get talked out of a promise, He doesn’t water down what He’s spoken to us. “God will not allow things to happen that won’t somehow move you to your destiny.” … Joel Osteen

at a stand still, but that just seems to be part of the experience. Spectators lined Hwy 90 to watch the action.. a lot of locals coaxed drivers to ‘lite-em-up’…. and there were plenty of police around to shutem-down. Everyone knows the rules; but sometimes ya’ just got to take that chance! It’s no secret that enjoy Emerald Coast Cruizin’ and I look forward to this event all year long. It’s a relaxing kinda’ show everyone coming and going at the event site.. The Coast Cruizers Hot Rod Alley tent is our hub of activities. The beach scene season is over, kids back in school, and the roads are not as crowded. Fact is, during this event most of the beach roads are filled with Emerald Coast Cruizn’ show cars. They are coming or going from the Emerald Coast Cruizn’ side trip event, or one of the many hotels, motels, condos, beach houses that cruizers have rented for a week or two. Oh yeah, let me make mention... that since it’s off season the room rates dropped to “affordable” There is plenty to do during your Emerald Coast Cruizn’ week in Panama City Beach, just the event site alone is a central location, secure parking at the Aaron Bessant Park show grounds, just a parking lot away from Pier Park. If the last time you were in Panama City Beach, and visions of the ‘Miracle Mile’ pops in your head, let me tell you things have changed... (Highway 98), has redefined Panama City Beach. People now know when they come here that a shopping destination like none other awaits them. Pier Park is a beautifully landscaped outdoor shopping mall with festive, colorful Caribbean architecture, containing national chain retailers along with unique locally owned boutiques and specialty stores. The lifestyle complex also contains a 16-screen movie theater, Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, Dave AND BUSTER’S and many other well-known restaurants and smaller eateries. Pier Park is the perfect destination for families, couples, kids...everyone! (info from their web site but they're right it is a cool place to hang out) All this and a short walk across the parking lot is thousands of kool carsn-trucks. What an event site.. True not everything is open, (season over remember) but with the influx of thousands of cruisers and spectators have more and more businesses staying open. (That’s kinda’ cool in away. Some of us have been going to this show for years and, although we maybe considered tourist too, for a week we get to be the locals.) If you are at the show I hope you will stop by the Hot Rod Alley tent to say “hello” Okay... E-mail time Jimbo, You know time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems like yesterday that I was young, just married, and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all those years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the winter of my life, and it catches me by surprise... How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those "older people" were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey... they move slower and I see an older person in myself now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me... but, I see the great change... Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit! And so... now I enter this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last... this I know, that when it's over on this earth... it's over. A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done... things I should have done, but indeed, there are also many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime. So, if you're not in your winter yet... let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life, please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can TODAY, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life... so, LIVE FOR TODAY and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember.. and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!! "Life" is a GIFT to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one. Remember: "It is Health that is real Wealth and not pieces of gold and silver." ~Your kids are becoming you......but your grandchildren are perfect! ~Going out is good.. coming home is even better! ~You forget names... but it's OK, because other people forgot they even knew you!!!

It's called "pre-sleep." ~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch.. ~You tend to use more 4 letter words ... Stay well, "OLD FRIEND!" giff1500@ To all of our Cruizer Friends, We want to thank all of you for coming out to our Annual Cruise-in at the Boyington. Our Residents had a blast, along with the staff. Seeing all of those beautiful cars and trucks bring back so many memories for our Residents. They are still talking about the event. We are very Blessed to have such wonderful friends like yourselves. Stay safe and keep on cruising, until we meet again. Sincerely, Darlene Currie, Life Enrichment Director at The Boyington Health and Rehabilitation Center. I stopped by the Boyington H&R Center in Gulfport for their Cruisin’ and hamburger/hotdog cookout. While I was there I met with Allen Pickens. We had a great conversation about our cars and adventures from our younger days. …… Jimbo

Jimbo, An old tired-looking dog wanders into a guy's yard. He examines the dog's collar and feels his well-fed belly and knows the dog has a home. The dog follows him into the house, goes down the hall, jumps on the couch, gets comfortable and falls asleep. The man thinks its rather odd, but lets him sleep. After about an hour the dog wakes up, walks to the door and the guy lets him out. The dog wags his tale and leaves.

The next day the dog comes back and scratches at the door. The guy opens the door, the dog comes in, goes down the hall, jumps on the couch, gets comfortable and falls asleep again. The man lets him sleep. After about an hour the dog wakes up, walks to the door and the guy lets him out. The dog wags his tale and leaves. This goes on for days. The guy grows really curious, so he pins a note on the dog's collar: "Your dog has been taking a nap at my house every day." The next day the dog arrives with another note pinned to his collar: "He lives in a home with four children -- he's trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?' Posted by Jerry H Jimbo, Our sixteen year-old son came home with a new Chevrolet Avalanche. My wife began to yell and scream, "Where did you get that truck?!" He calmly told them, "I bought it today." "With what money?" She demanded. She knew what a Chevrolet Avalanche cost. Our son said, "Well this one cost me just fifteen dollars." "Who would sell a truck like that for fifteen dollars?" We asked. "It was the lady up the street," said the boy. I don"t know her name - they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy a Chevrolet Avalanche for fifteen dollars." "Oh my Goodness!," My wife said, "she must be a child abuser. Who knows what she will do next? John, you go right up there and see what’s going on." So I walked up the street to the house where the lady lived and found her out in the yard calmly planting petunias! I introduced myself as the father of the boy to whom she had sold a new Chevrolet Avalanche for fifteen dollars and demanded to know why she did it. "Well," she said, "this morning I got a phone call from my husband. "I thought he was on a business trip, but learned from a friend he had run off to Hawaii with his mistress and really doesn’t intend to come back." "He claimed he was stranded and needed cash, and asked me to sell his new Chevrolet Avalanche and send him the money. So I did." John1944@ Jimbo, There was a young woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as she was getting her things ‘in order,’ she contacted her Pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. Everything was in order and the Pastor was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her. “There’s one more thing,” she said excitedly.. “What’s that?” came the Pastor’s reply. “This is very important,” the young woman continued. “I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.” The Pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say. “That surprises you, doesn’t it?” the young woman asked. “Well, to be honest, I’m puzzled by the request,” said the Pastor. The young woman explained. “My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement. In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, “Keep your fork.” It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something

wonderful, and with substance!” “So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder “What’s with the fork?” Then I want you to tell them: “Keep your fork the best is yet to come.” The Pastor’s eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. She had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge. She KNEW that something better was coming. At the funeral people were walking by the young woman’s casket and they saw the cloak she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the Pastor heard the question, “What’s with the fork?” And over and over he smiled. During his message, the Pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the young woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right. So the next time you reach down for your fork let it remind you, ever so gently, that the best is yet to come. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. Cherish the time you have, and the memories you share. Being friends with someone is not an opportunity, but a sweet responsibility. And just remember … keep your fork! Posted by Donnie H. This month is Thanksgiving and if you were at my table I would propose a toast…… "Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round heads in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status-quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, I see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do." Till next month ……

Jimbo

This Thanksgiving when everyone goes around the table to say what they are thankful for, say, "I'm thankful I didn't get caught!" and refuse to say anything more.

Mr. Fontenot put his 3 year old daughter to bed, told her a story and listened to her prayers which ended by saying, "God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, God bless Grandma, and good-bye Grandpa." Fontenot asked, "Why did you say good-bye Grandpa mon cher?" The sweet little Cajun girl said, "I don't know me daddy, it just seemed like da right ting to do." The next day, grandpa died. Fontenot thought it was just a strange coincidence. A few months later, Fontenot was again putting his little girl to bed and listened to her prayers which went like this, "God bless Mommy, God Bless Daddy, and good-bye Grandma." The next day the grandmother died. "Holy links of hot boudin!!" thought Fontenot, "my little girl is in contact with the other side." Several weeks later when the girl was going to bed, Fontenot heard her say, "God bless Mommy and good-bye Daddy." He practically went into shock. He couldn't sleep all night and got up at the crack of dawn to go to his office. He was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch and watched the clock. He figured if he could get by until midnight he would be okay. He felt safe in the office, so instead of going home at the end of the day he stayed there, drinking coffee all day, looking at his watch, and jumping frantically at every sound. Finally midnight arrived; he breathed a sigh of relief and went home. When he got home his wife said, "I've never seen you work so late. What's da matter?" He said, "I really don't want to talk about it cher. I've just spent da absolute worst day of my life." Fontenot's wife said, "You tink you had a bad day? You'll never believe what done happened to me. Dis morning, my aerobics instructor dropped dead in da middle of our workout !!!" The Easy Cajun

A few days later, the same guy stuck his head in the door and asked, "How long before I can get a haircut?" The barber looked around at the shop and said, "About 3 hours." The guy left. A week later, the same guy stuck his head in the shop and asked, "How long before I can get a haircut?" The barber looked around the shop and said, "About an hour and a half." The guy left. The barber turned to his friend and said, "Hey, Bob, do me a favor, follow him and see where he goes. He keeps asking how long he has to wait for a haircut, but he never comes back." A little while later, Bob returned to the shop, laughing hysterically. The barber asked, "So, where does he go when he leaves?" Bob looked up, wiped the tears from his eyes and said, "Your house!"

By: Steve Kanter The idea was born one night, about ten months ago. The thought came, “Let's build a car, and give it away. October 5th was an open date for a car show and Ron wanted to claim it. The car and the date were a great idea! There was, however, a small problem; there were no funds, no car, no help, and no place to build it. But, no sooner had Ron put the word out, all that changed. Someone donated a T-bucket, Jason Rutledge came on board, others volunteered, funds became available, and a shop donated by Rich Cichon gave us a place to build the car. Everything was starting to come together. Now it was just the easy stuff, some fabrication, order some parts, and write some articles. Hey, this is a T-Bucket, it's an easy build. It's a T-Bucket all right, but there is still a whole lot to do. This is a total custom, lots of detail in this car, and it takes time to build. There was lots of fabrication, parts that didn't arrive on time or the order wasn't complete and not enough available building hours. You know, typical hot rod building problems. Slowly but surely the T-Bucket started to come to life. The custom frame was completed, the custom front and rear suspension was installed, the new Chevy engine and rebuilt transmission were installed, tires-brakes-electrical system-steeringexhaust-shifter-and a whole bunch more, found their places on the chassis. Then it all had to come apart so the frame could be painted, and then reassembled! And then, there's the T-Bucket itself, custom body work, custom paint, and custom interior, found its place on the chassis, during final assembly. Everyone who put their hand on the T-Bucket, worked hard. There were many different skill levels in the shop, and there were many learning opportunities. Long nights and dedicated volunteers came together, to build a T-Bucket to be given away by Campground Baptist Church. Finally she was done. A vision of beauty. A custom T-Bucket, like no other. Sitting in front of the church before she was given away to her new owner, the T-Bucket had a very strong presence. It was just cool looking. It has a 50s-60s look, with modern day technology. Campground Baptist Church and I would like to personally thank AutoZone, NAPA on Dedeaux Road, The Ridiculous Speed Shop, Headliners Plus, Steve Miller Race Cars, Stan's Power Train, Arrow Power Washing, Performance Tire and Wheel, 3 Oaks Farm Repair and Restoration, Neill's Radiator Service, The Vintage at 3 Oaks, Neil Tapp's Collision Center, Paul's PBE, Coker Tire, Honest Charley's, and Design Plus for their contributions to this project. We would also like to thank Jimbo at Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine for a great job in promoting this event. Ok, so you're asking, who won the T Bucket? The lucky winner is, drum roll please, Rachel Higdon! Congratulations Rachel from all of us who helped build the TBucket, and from Campground Baptist Church. We wish you years of fun in your new Hot Rod!

Remember Thanksgiving is Thursday November 28th. The Greatest Thanksgiving

I have finally made some headway on at least one of the doors of the Chases Big Truck project. Could not for the life of me figure what direction the previous build was going, no info or not much from the previous owner. So, like most all of the things with this truck, I was again left to my own devices. This whole adventure I am going through would have been much easier had I just found some more old doors, or just the inner door skins. After many purchases and much modifications to what had been done, I almost have a, (meaning 1) door with functioning inner and outer door handles. Next up is fit the power windows and new glass, and all of the channel material that the new windows ride in. I have a good bit of time and a fair sum of money invested in this entire process. After that is functional, I will have a far better idea and it should be easier to do the other one. Then blow every thing apart and touch up primer and go for paint. During all of this my Grandboy Chase has asked me to work on his four- wheeler, the one that has been left to die a slow and painful death in his back yard. Pop, it only needs a battery and I can make it go again. We all know how that story goes I’m sure. So, the Queen gets him a new battery, he installs it correctly too I might add. Still wont even crank over. I drag this thing to my house for further evaluation. I test everything in the starter and its circuitry, now we need a starter. Install new starter, cranks over great, no spark. Apparently, it now has more demons possessing the ignition circuitry. I am desperately trying to figure this thing out, while trying to not be frustrated over the inner workings of the doors for the Big Truck. Oh! did I mention I have no diagram for this little monster either. Stay tuned I may just figure this out by the next writing. In between all of these recent goings on I did venture off to at least one Cruise Night, and the Gulf Coast Vintage Drag Racing Championship. I took the 454SS to the track and claimed a spot of turf, as luck would have it, even with the starting line. Set up the Pop-Up canopy and invited others to enjoy the views and action for the day. I think it was the best $15.00 I had ever spent. I had a blast chatting with my friends and watching the old school gassers. I had another Large time, it was definitely good Hot Rod therapy, and a much-needed distraction. I sure hope everyone had a great time and visit along our Gulf Coast during Cruisin The Coast. I know my feet and legs will be paying the price for a few days after its over. It really is a great event for all of those that come from distant places in their attempts to have fun with cars. For those of us that volunteer their time to help make this happen, I am sure many folks have offered up their Thanks to You. I say the same Thanks, for without your efforts it quite possibly would not be the same. I have not used too many band aids or gauze during all of these door efforts either. I did go through several grinding wheels and lots of bits of steel plate and other strapping material during this process. We will all have a busy coming few months, lots of things to do, places to go, and more fun with cars for a cause too stay safe everyone. So, from the Queens Castle and My Carriage House, have a Blessed Thanksgiving... from the Gizmos.

"Are you going grocery shopping today?" my husband, Roy asked when I picked up the telephone. "I plan to," I answered. Thanksgiving was only a couple days away. Everyone in our family would be coming to our house. My funds were limited, therefore my box of coupons awaited me in the car. I knew I had to be creative in my shopping that day. I had to stretch every dollar. For a few seconds, Roy sat silently on the other end of the line. "Why do you ask?" I uttered, fearing what he might say. "Nancy, there's a family with a half dozen kids that will not have anything to eat for Thanksgiving. The little one is only five-yearsold." "So what are you saying?" I whispered. "While you're at the store could you possibly buy something for them?" Roy's words echoed in my heart. GroceriesŠ a five-yearoldŠ eight in the familyŠ My head began to spin thinking about the fifty dollars I had reserved for our family's Thanksgiving dinner. In the back of my mind I counted the hungry guests who would be coming to our house for dinner. I put my head down on my desk, already feeling defeated. There's no way possible, I thought. But the compassion I heard in my husband's voice struck a nerve inside me. "Sure," I replied. "But only if God helps." "Thanks, sweetheart," Roy whispered. "Just do what you can." He then hung up the telephone. I finished my work and prayed all the way to the nearest grocery store. I entered the parking lot. I noticed a big sign in the grocery store window: Turkeys - 29 cents a pound. "This is the place, Lord" I whispered. I grabbed my box of coupons, went inside, secured two buggies, and headed to the frozen foods. The turkeys were indeed on sale, but I discovered one big problem. When I read the sign posted on the freezer door my heart sank. "Limit one." "But I need two," I uttered to myself. I decided to find the manager. I explained the problem. He made an exception. After tossing a turkey in each buggy, I began my shopping fury. It was amazing how many buy-one, get-one free items were being featured that day. The first item went into one buggy. The free item went in the other. In addition, I had all the right coupons to get exactly what both families needed for a hearty Thanksgiving dinner. I proceeded to the register and held my breath while the cashier rang up my groceries. To my surprise, I had enough money. I was even able to purchase a package of cookies for the five-year-old who had stolen my heart, even though I had never met her. Later that afternoon, Roy and I made a special delivery to a home filled with children of all ages. I will never forget the smiles on the six kids' faces, as they made several trips from my car carrying numerous bags of groceries inside. This event reminded me of a story. Even though He only had a few loaves and fishes, Jesus multiplied them and fed five thousand people. And to top it off, there was food left over. I wondered if God was doing the same thing that day. By far, that was the greatest Thanksgiving Day of my life. My entire family shared a hearty meal with us. We had plenty to eat. We even had enough food left over for the evening meal. That afternoon, when I had time to think about what had happened, I imagined a home, not far from where I lived. There was a mother and a father and six children sitting around the kitchen table, laughing and rejoicing. They enjoyed the same meal that our family had shared together that day. Then I realized that miracles happen when we step out in faith and in steps God. For with us, some things are impossible. But with God, all things are possible. ~ Nancy B. Gibbs ~

October 12, 2019 By: ChandaElaine The sun was out and the weather was glorious for this month’s Texoma Cars & Coffee! Right off the bat, I spotted this glorious British beauty and had to talk to the owner, Gary Hamm, about his MG! Gary: I've had a lot of British cars. I got into British cars just because mainly the MG TD. When I was a kid, I saw one and always wanted one. I thought they were cool looking car and so that's how I ended up with them. But I've had multiple different brands of cars, Packards, Corvettes -- all kinds of cars. But British cars, they're just...they're easy. They're easy to maintain. Despite what people think they are very reliable. And they have a classic style and quite honestly, they were the original sports car. The only reason Chevrolet developed the Corvette was because Harley Earl liked the Jaguar, and they wanted to build a car similar to Jaguar, and that's how Chevrolet even got into sports cars. It was because of the British. So, that's reason why I like British cars. I got that TD from a gentleman who was an engineer and retired. What he does now is he just restores cars for fun. I happened to meet up with him because I used to live in Rhode Island (where he lives) and I ended up with a TD. He had already restored it. The car has always been British Racing Green, even when it was new. But yeah, he redid the whole thing. The only thing he did on it that’s not correct, but most people with TDs do, is instead of the wood grain dash that it has, TDs put leather coat on it. So, it would have had the same leather that's on the seats on the dash. The TC always had the wood, but most people that have TDs take the leather [off]. So, he put the wood in and I decided I'm gonna leave it that way because it looks better than the leather. But that's about the only thing is not correct on that car. Everything else is pretty well correct. [The seats] are actually called Green Apple, or something like that. They don't call them British Racing Green… but you could order how you wanted them back then and so that car got ordered with green seats. That's the reason why if, on the TD's typically, you'll look at the front radiator insert it's usually the color of the interior. So, if that had the beige interior, that insert would have been beige. So, since it has green, fortunately enough it has a green insert, but that's how you tell if a TD [is correct.] If it's correct. whatever color interior that insert on the radiator will be. I don't know if all the British cars are that way. I know MG was that way. That's the way they did the TD and the TCs. They never were full-chrome either. So, if you ever see the insert that's full-chrome...they were always painted whatever color the interior was, and that was just something MG did. That was their style.

The MG TCs were the ones the military -- my dad who was in the war, too. Everybody saw them and they wanted them after war. TD was kind of an upgrade from the TC because, 1.) if you ever see a TC, it's got, like, bicycle width tires; they’re real skinny and, 2.) they had a smaller motor. The TD they went to a bigger motor and better wheels, so they were a little more “safe,” even though the frame on that car’s all wood. So, safe is irrelevant. You know, it was 1950s safe. So, the TD was kind of upgraded. Plus, the TD they started building them left-hand drive. All the TCs were right-hand drive. Then after the war, of course the British were in bad shape economically, so they wanted to export their cars out. So, that's how most of the TDs built ended up in the United States. Now, they're getting shipped back to England ‘cause those people want them and are buying them up as fast as they can. When I was in high school, I was into British motorcycles. So, I had a lot of British motorcycles, Triumph, BSAs…And I just, I don't know, I like British stuff. Yeah, they leak oil. But you know what? That’s good. As long as it’s leaking, I know it's got oil in it. [I like] just the character of them. Their rudimentary. Not fast by any stretch of the imagination. It's just relaxing. When you drive around, you actually see stuff around you, because you're not moving so fast, you can't see stuff. So, it's just relaxing, and it's got a classic look about it. When people look at it, they always think it's a lot older than what it is, ‘cause it looks more like a pre-war car, not a post-war car. You know, post-war things changed a lot because we also have, I have an MG A also, which is, you know, the car after the MG TF, which basically looks like the TD other than the headlights... And I also have a Triumph TR3. Both those cars are more modern looking compared to the TD. The TD just looks like something before the war, except it's a lot more drivable ‘cause we've owned cars – we’ve owned a 25 Nash and a 28 Packard, and the TD is a little easier to drive than those cars were. And will go a little faster. Top speed on a Packard is maybe, maybe 40 miles an hour, comfortable. Whereas, I can get up to 60 on this thing. Thank you for sharing, Gary! Now, we are going to take a hard left turn, so hang on. On Wednesday, October 9, a fire devastated several buildings in downtown Denison, costing a number of people both their livelihoods and homes. Fortunately, no lives were lost; however, they escaped with only the clothes they were wearing and there are a number of people who are in need. As though to remind us the danger had not passed, the debris began to smolder during Texoma Cars & Coffee and the fire department had to return. The pictures included with this article are of the buildings as they were on Saturday morning, October 12, 2019, as the fire department worked to prevent additional damage. Downtown is a very close-knit community. Both Tracy Reality and the First United Bank have set up funds to help those affected by the fire. The car community, also, really stepped up during Texoma Cars & Coffee to help out. Many of the attendees made donations, offered services, and supplied everything from free advertising space to clothing gift cards to help those who have lost their homes and businesses. Thank you to everyone one who gave - it is truly appreciated! The car community is truly a caring community!

Well we have finally made it to our year anniversary of OVERSPRAY so thank your self because without you readers we would not have continued this article! This months how-to is on a piece of wall art found in the trash!! Well you know we couldn’t let it just sit there as a canvas, so here it is!!!!!! 1. Can you believe that someone actually threw this cool piece away. I mean sure it had dents and damage but it was no match to a hammer and some patience. We s t a r t e d b y hammering dents and sanding the surface with an aggressive grit of sand paper and working my way up to smooth it. Then I cleaned it as best as I could with the 3 agents. Next it was hit with a layer of red Kandy followed by clear to lock it in. The cool thing about this project is it is very transparent to show the mirror like layer underneath that will make it dance in any light. That is why I chose transparent paint for this project. 2. Next step is a mix of digital and time. I actually drew this gun with some programs of a

picture I took for a tattoo design. I had it on file so I thought it would make a cool project. I vecorized it and cut it with my plotter in the size I needed. When it came to placing it I needed my partner Barbie’s help in placing because it was curved and separated!! We were just very careful and took our time to get it stuck. After we had an initial stick to the panel I took my exacto knife and cut out each square and placed each one as if that was the job. Some sections were ribbed up from the curve when placing so I just simply cut backwards with my knife and re stuck them to keep a crisp edge. It took a second. www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

3. I began to spray a white mixture over entire outline piece that I designed. It took many layers to get where I wanted so don’t rush. 4. Now here is the mental part. To start I like working from big to small mostly so I decided to start with the cup. I left all parts of stencil still on this panel when I placed it except the outline. When I take the cup portion off I think about that section and paint it accordingly. Then I peel another portion of the design next or near that cup and spray that accordingly. The choosing of your next step will come easy after you get into a groove. I have to just work and work each pull. 5. As you see now I am no where near finished and I am focusing on chrome elements now to get the shine effects right. I pull the tip rings and the handle to focus on a chrome like look and then I keep going. It is important to pull these first because my pull is very strategic in what I am to paint to keep the overall appearance correct. Some stuff needs to be painted from a certain angle so only pull the stencil in that area with a certain plan. You really have to think at all times about your light sources and where you will be painting before you pull that area away. 6. Here is a great example of when and where to pull. As you can see the bolt has a cool effect of light hitting it so I first hit the right side and

18

NOVEMBER 2019

then in turn hit the left. I then continue working the entire piece with care in which piece I pull before the next. 7. There is a regulator on this paint gun and I want it to show the year Precision was established plus give this piece to the owners. So once again I am very strategic to get to where the display is the last pull so I can do my thing. I use the negative approach and put my stencil in the center and just dust some white around it. 8. I evidently didn’t get a picture but before I pulled everything I added a reduce black shading to all undersides of the paint gun to give it a sense of depth. You could leave it like this and it would be cool. I decided for a more monochromatic look to make everything tie in. 9. I added another layer of Kandy red to tint just the artwork itself and not the rest. 10. Clear !!!! Clear !!! Clear !!! It truly does a piece like this justice. It brings out all the elements and melts it all in very nicely. Pictures do not do this justice because when you walk around this piece it dances in the light so I tried to take a few pictures to get you more of a feel for it. Of course before I cleared it I did all the proper cleaning to insure it would be dust and lint free ect. I really enjoyed this month’s piece and I look forward to the next one!! - John

The Chevrolet S-10 Extreme was a special edition pickup truck aimed at capturing the attention of the youth in the late 1990’s, and it did so in an extreme fashion. The truck was lowered from the factory with a ZQ8 suspension and given a distinctive body kit to go with the unique wheels with the specific attempt of appealing to the youth market. The S-10 Extreme was available with oodles of options including the LS trim package, regular or extended cab, 2.2L four cylinder or 4.3L Vortec V-6 sporting 190 horsepower and a monstrous 245 lb-ft of torque, making it capable of some totally “sick” burnouts, Fleetside or the wide hipped Stepside beds were available, plus a long list of convenience options. This meant that a little over $15,000.00 could buy you the keys to a factory warranted hot rod…well sort of. At the time, these trucks gained a reputation for being souped-up, and with added turbos and blowers became a regular staple at the drag strip. That was then, and this is now, and this truck has been largely forgotten. Not many people covet these trucks because so many were driven hard and put away wet. Good looking ones are few and far between. Well, prepare yourself for Andrew and Melissa Ebken’s 1999 Chevrolet S-10 Extreme from Illiopolis, Illinois…it is a great one. It is named: “Habitual” Andy purchased a brand spanking new one in the fall of 1998 from a local dealer. The plan from the beginning was to make this a Pro-Street truck because Andrew had previously owned a Pro-Street Nova. Most of us realize that even the best laid plans get delayed, and this experience was no different. Since the plan was to do the work himself in a 20X20 Garage at his home, it had to be completed a little at a time. The initial work began with Andy installing the S&W back half, 2x3 boxed tubing chassis with ladder bar suspension, Moser axles and Wilwood Pro Street disc brakes. Next work began to install a cowl hood and send the truck out for custom paint and graphics. This work was performed by Quint Walberts at Quint’s Kustom Kolors in Avon, Indiana. The award winning custom paint, custom graphics and airbrushing on the custom owner built rear wing and engine panels were also painted there. This S-10 is a highly customized truck and I can only give you some of the highlights here. You have to see this Pro Street truck in person to appreciate it fully. The vehicle drivetrain is based upon a 1999 iron block LS 4.8L with a custom grind Thumpr series camshaft, F.A.S.T. Map sensor, Melling oil pump, ICT Billet aluminum intake, Patriot headers, Kenny Brittin exhaust, Flowmaster 40 series mufflers, 4160 e transmission, and a modified air intake system designed by the owner, just to name a few changes. The tires are Mickey Thompson Sportsman, 29x16.5 rear, 165/70r front, mounted on Weld Racing Rodlite wheels. The narrowed rear housing has a 4.33 gear set with a mini spool, Moser 31 spline axles, featuring a Dana Spicer driveshaft by Acme Drivetrain in Decatur, Illinois. This is a brief over-view of the custom work that was done entirely by Andrew Ebken. This vehicle is a far cry from the vehicle Andy purchased back in 1998 and is a major improvement on the factory truck. “Habitual” has won many awards and trophies including: x Best Paint and Graphics at the 2019 Street Machine Nationals, Du Quoin, Illinois. x Outstanding Paint at the 2019 Super Chevy Show in Joliet, Illinois x Outstanding Achievement at the 2019 NMCA in Indianapolis, Indiana x Best Paint at the Street Machine Fall Nationals in Springfield, Missouri x Outstanding Paint at the Menard’s Chevy Show in St. Louis, Missouri Andy would especially like to thank his wife Melissa for all her help and encouragement during this show winning build. This would not have been possible without her support. It is my hope that you will have the opportunity to see this spectacular Pro Street S-10 in person. It is a magnificent piece of art. Happy Thanksgiving to every one of you loyal readers. I hope you have many blessings to be thankful for and many forthcoming.

With ancient Polynesian, Native American, Egyptian and Asian influences, tattoos have been prominent in most cultures and nations for a millennia. In October I attended the annual Villain Arts' Tampa Tattoo Convention for the second year as a judge at the event's pinup contest. Like many of you, I am constantly astounded by the talent, beauty and creativity of the tattoo artists. When I think about the history of tattoos, I tend to first and foremost think about the iconic Sailor Jerry tattoos that adorned the arms of our US servicemen during World War II. Although I realize that the art form has existed since long before that, it was not something I previously thought about. Yet when I attended the 2018 Tampa Tattoo Convention last year, I saw the unique Samoan tribal tattoos that got me thinking about what an ancient art form it truly is. This month I will share some of the remarkable facts and interesting history of ink. Evidence of human tattoos is believed to go as far back as 2000 BC when it was intended to be protection for the body. The first tattoos were made by pricking or scratching the first layer of the skin. Then ashes or oil were spread into the scratches and eventually colored dyes were added.

Dai and Li people, practiced it as a rite of passage where women used the tattoos to accent facial features and men used them to highlight their musculature features. Similarly, the vibrant, colorful Japanese tattoo art called Irezumi was always done as a full body suit or full sleeve where it could be hidden under the clothing as it is still considered rude to show off the tattoos in public. Thousands of years of Polynesian tattooing has perfected the body art with lots of geometric designs and genealogy, with locations representing time. For example, designs were placed on the front of the body as symbols of the future and if designs were placed on the back it was to honor an event or person from the past. According to nextluxury.com, even the Tahitian word “tatau” which means “to make something” originated in the late 1700s from the Polynesian people. In Samoa, the techniques and traditional tattooing tools have not changed much, with a tool still made from turtle shell and boars’ teeth. The skill is passed from father to son. Wikipedia cites the oldest evidence of tattooing specifically in North America was on a frozen, mummified Inuit woman in Alaska from the 16th century. The Inuit have a long history of tattooing in which girls’ faces and bodies were tattooed to represent beauty and maturity as they became women, starting when they got their first menstrual cycle. The group believed that a woman could not transition into the spirit world without tattoos on her skin. The inventor of what is considered the original tattoo machine, Samuel O'Reilly, discovered a device called the "Electric Pen" which was previously invented in 1876 by Thomas A. Edison. Edison was the owner of the highest number of patents in the United States. The electric pen however was a device strictly created to duplicate documents for businesses; not to be used on the body. So in 1891, tattoo artist Samuel O'Reilly added multiple needles and an ink reservoir, thus inventing and patenting the first electric tattoo machine. His invention revolutionized the process by speeding it up significantly.

(Photo: Ancient tattooing Bronze instruments used in Egypt dating back to 1450 BCE)

Finding markings as old as 5300 years, ancient tattooed mummies have been discovered from all over the world with permanent ink designs on their bodies. In September of 1991, in the permafrost of Italy's mountainous Otzal Alps, a frozen mummy commonly called the “Iceman” was found. Also known as Otzi the Iceman, he was found with 61 tattoos marked throughout his body, most of which were sets of lines and “x's,” including inscriptions on his legs. Upon examination scientists found that the tattoos were created using soot or fireplace ash. Otzi is evidence of the first tattoos known to mankind. Additional mummies were found in Egypt displaying ancient tattoos as well. A group of Egyptian females with unique dot patterns tattooed on their abdomens were believed to be marked as consorts or priestesses, while others believe the women used the tattoos as protection for their unborn children. Some of the women also had the god of childbirth, Bes, displayed on their thighs. Researcher Daniel Fouquet believes the tattoos were performed as medical treatment because they were only found on women. In ancient China, the art was widely looked down upon as a defacement of the body while tribes of Chinese people, such as the

Later in 1929, Percy Waters of Detroit, Michigan patented what would be considered our modern day tattoo machine. He was eventually inducted into the Tattoo Hall of Fame. As reported by Authoritytattoo.com, the inks used in the original tattoo machine guns were created using geological or mineral sources. Remarkably, cinnabar was used to make red and black ink was made from iron oxide and carbon. Different shades of orange, red and yellow were made from varying cadmium compounds. It is thought that the third book of the Old Testament, the Book of Leviticus, is the primary cause of the prohibition of tattooing. Even though tattoos were historically deemed unacceptable, it did not stop some of history's most prominent and influential figures from adding ink to their bodies. The rebellious figures getting stained, as it was sometimes called, included former President Andrew Jackson, 1984 author

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

George Orwell, Abraham Lincoln's assassinator John Wilkes Boothe who had his initials tattooed on his hand, R. H. Macy, the former sailor and founder of Macy's department stores had Macy's now famous red star logo tattooed on his forearm and 26th President Teddy Roosevelt had a traditional chest piece of his family crest. Perhaps the most interesting figure with a tattoo is Thomas Edison, who himself was the inventor of the previously mentioned Electric Pen which led to the creation of the first tattooing machines. Undoubtedly one of the most notable people in history, Edison had a left forearm tattoo of five dots in the pattern of what you would see on dice. Just like ours today, most of their tattoos symbolized luck, family connections and personal histories. Men involved in dangerous lines of work, such as coal miners and sailors, believed that their tattoos protected them from the elements. Sailors often sported anchors, sea birds and dancing girls while miners commonly wore pick-axes and skulls. In the 20th century a turtle tattoo meant that a sailor had crossed the equator while a swallow symbolized a 5,000 mile journey. Protection papers for American seamen described early American tattoos in addition to seamen's details, including their race, height, scars and birthmarks. At that time artists working on board ships used simple tools and anything available as pigments, including urine and gunpowder. The Next Luxury website dispelled the popular myth that tattooing caught on in England and Europe after James Cook went to Tahiti in 1769. The tattooing craze spiked in England in the 1860s after King Edward VII got his first tattoo, a Jerusalem cross, in Cairo while on an Egyptian royal tour. The King's sons eventually sported their own tattoos from Japanese master Hori Chiyo in 1881. After the king and princes got tattooed, it became acceptable for other people to sport the artwork without being looked down upon as criminals and degenerates. Tattooing at that time was an expensive and painful process and by the late 1880s had become a mark of wealth for the crowned heads of Europe. Because artists were not common in Britain until Tom Riley in the late 1800s, people traveled to Japan and Egypt to get inked. Other cultures used tattoos to mark members of societal groups. Greeks and Romans did this as they used the tattoos to differentiate their religious sect members and even described a group of Scottsmen that were known as “Picts” because their bodies were adorned with blue tattoos. German tattoo artist Martin Hildebrandt is credited with opening the first American tattoo studio in New York in 1846. Martin gained fame during the Civil War when both Union and Confederate soldiers alike sported his designs. Martin's daughter Nora was fully covered in her father's artwork. She was one of the earliest American Tattooed Lady exhibits, traveling with the Barnum and Bailey Circus throughout the 1890s as she showed off her dad's decorative work with pride. New York was home to another famous tattoo artist of his time; the inventor of the first electric tattoo machine, Samuel O'Reilly. Samuel was known for his New York tattoo shop, the Bowery. Tattooing ran in Samuel's family, as it is said that his cousin was well-known British tattoo artist Tom Riley and his brother was John O'Reilly, known as the “Tattooed Irishman” for his complete body art. John O'Reilly was a renowned boxer and popular circus feature.

Upon Samuel O' Reilly's death in 1908, his apprentice, Charles Wagner, took over the Bowery. Charles would soon make a name for himself as a premier tattoo artist. One of his most famous clients was the lovely Betty Broadbent, who was widely recognized for having more than 560 tattoos. Betty was the first person to be honored by the Tattoo Hall of Fame. Charles Wagner was the first artist to offer “cosmetic tattooing,” or permanent make-up applied to the eyes and lips. He was also one of the first to tattoo animals, such as dogs and horses, for identification purposes. Cosmetic tattoos on women are not novel; in fact they became popular during the 1920s, when makeup was too expensive to buy. Eyebrows and lip liner were popular makeup tattoos at that time, but most women kept the source of their adornment a secret. The 1940s ushered in the “Sailor Jerry” tattoo style in which creator Norman Keith Collins crested his own pigments to add vibrant colors to his designs. Coinciding with WWII, there was an increase in patriotic tattoos, even on women who joined the workforce while the men were at war. Pioneering tattoo artist George Burchett was famously known as the “King of Tattooists” in the 1950s after he tattooed part of the Royal Family. He tattooed sailors, circus performers and even occasionally women. Alternativethread.com described how he was one of the first artists to pioneer what we now know as “microblading” to make the eyebrows appear darker. Even after tattoo artist and military veteran George Burchett became well known for his famous clientele, he always made George Burchett & his wife Edith Burchett time to still tattoo Navy and Army men who sometimes came long distances to get their ink from him. The 1960s brought about the biggest surge in popularity of those sporting tattoos. Ferbscosmetics stated that in 1936 only a mere 6% of the population had at least one tattoo. A 2006 study from the American Academy of Dermatology found that 24% of Americans age 18 to 50 are tattooed, making it one in every four people that has a tattoo. Even with some controversy, Mattel toys created the first tattooed Barbie doll in 2011. From deviance to artistic expression, tattoos in pop culture are still evolving in many ways. In August 2013, London's William Mullane was tattooed with a portrait of his late father which used ink mixed with a small portion of his father's ashes. The United States alone has over 20,000 tattoo parlors in operation. While tattoos have certainly evolved over thousands of years, with vastly different looks, it is absolutely certain that they will only continue to increase in popularity.

Notice if you have an original looking 40’s model car of any kind or know someone that does check out the deal at the end of my column.. I left early Wednesday morning from Pensacola, FL heading to the MS Coast for Cruisin The Coast. This year the show registered 8,620 cars and trucks from over 40 states. I had a meeting to attend, then I headed over to my shop to grab the Hot Rod Show trailer and get it to the Coast Coliseum for setup for the Cruisin The Coast Swap Meet. There are so many details to get ready for a show, luckily everything stays in the trailer, I go through and refresh everything I can, as early as I can for the next show. Cruisin The Coast put me up with a nice suite at Margaritaville in Biloxi, MS Wednesday through Saturday night; I was on the 12th Floor,

one of six suites on the Fun Deck balcony, a huge balcony with three or four sets of tables & chairs and an awesome view of Deer Island and the MS Sound right outside your sliding glass door. My show morning ritual to get ready, is of course a good breakfast, an 18 pound bag of ice from a ice vending machine for the trailer cooler and two large black coffee’s from McDonalds for my thermos. McDonalds has the best coffee, when you drink it black like I do you know good coffee because nothing is covering up the flavor. Helping me out this year Thursday and Friday was Tabitha Lewis, we worked together at AFLAC, she is gorgeous, she worked last year’s show and was awesome. No training needed on how to deal with the cruisers she got right to work. On Saturday I brought in a rookie, Christy Lafferty. I met Christy on Facebook about a year ago and we started talking, telling her about the Hot Rod Show and she decided to take it on on Saturday. We had such a good time,

she is so pretty, smart, sweet and is thinking about doing Emerald Coast Cruisin Car Show with me November 7th – 9th. Getting off work this time of year is her problem, she is a surgery tech. The first day of the Swap Meet is always the biggest as long as everything else is equal. This year was the same. This is our third year to do the Swap Meet, it is amazing how many people come through each day.

Eating is always a big deal when I’m doing car shows. I got to eat a Sherry’s Catfish while I was in town, loved getting the opportunity again to eat real fried catfish and also made it to The White Cap Seafood Restaurant for gumbo and jumbo fried shrimp. I’ve been eating with the Lizana family for over three decades. Getting to see my buddies is always a blast at Cruisin The Coast. Hundreds of my friends stopped by over the three days we were at the Coliseum just to say hi, most don’t stay long because they know records run out and I have to keep em’ turning. I still manually fire everything you hear on the Hot Rod Show from the National Anthem til the end. Auto pilot is nice, but not very creative. I still like the old school way of doing a radio styled show. I was able to finish up the show Saturday, get the trailer back to my shop and put up until the next show. Next on the schedule is Emerald Coast Cruizin in Panama City Beach, FL. I finished up writing and producing the TV commercials this week for Emerald Coast Cruizin to run in many, many Southeastern markets. You can see the TV ads on my Facebook page. This show is jam packed with celebrities. Anson Williams, Potsey and Donnie Most, Ralph Malph from Happy Days, Butch Patrick, little Eddie Munster from the Munster’s TV show. Joe and Amanda Martin from the TV show Iron Resurrection and The World’s Shortest Person. Music from The Rip Chords, an Elvis Impersonator and more great acts. This year you have another entertainment option in live Professional Wrestling Saturday at 2pm. You’ll have a choice of music or wrestling. Be sure and bring your lawn chairs. Before I go, I told you a little bit about my fishing. I have a kayak, I live a block off the water in Perdido Bay and I have spent many hours this last month perfecting the mounting of a trolling motor on to my kayak. The installation was complicated, but I had a kayak trolling motor pro walk me through the process step by step. He has been awesome. Right before I sat down to write the column I finished the process of getting the motor mounted. It turned out awesome. I have been testing the range of the motor for the last three hours, running it nonstop. Of course when you add a motor to any vessel you have to register it. Here in Florida the process is pretty easy. I also found a guy to install the numbers on the kayak too. Adding the motor will increase my fishing range X 10! The UPS guy that brought me parts also has a motorized kayak, he asked me if I planned to snapper fish in mine? I said no way I would go out far enough for that. He said where they go is about a mile out and there are usually 30-35 kayaks out there fishing, but there is plenty of room. I gave him my business card so we’ll see. 1940’s Model Car If you own a 1940’s model original looking car or truck Barb Medlock wants to talk with you. Thanksgiving Proclamation Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to “recommend to the people of the United States a day of public Thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness” Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best. Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

George Washington NOTE: Shortly after the Thanksgiving Proclamation was written, it was lost for 130 years. The original document was written in long hand by William Jackson, secretary to the President, and was then signed by George Washington. It was probably misplaced or mixed in with some private papers when the US capitol moved from New York to Washington, D.C. The original manuscript was not placed in the National Archives until 1921 when Dr. J. C. Fitzpatrick, assistant chief of the manuscripts division of the Library of Congress found the proclamation at an auction sale being held at an art gallery in New York. Dr Fitzpatrick purchased the document for $300.00 for the Library of Congress, in which it now resides. It was the first official presidential proclamation issued in the United States.

DIRT TRACK REVIVAL

1 and 2 for the third consecutive time racing together!

By: Chavus Holland Welcome back everyone! Not much racing to report about this month, but I do have some big news to share! Let’s get the racing report in first…here we go! When I left off last month, I was talking about our first ever visit to Tri-County Speedway in Flomaton, Alabama…Chase felt like we had left some unfinished business there…I would agree! So, we loaded up the very next weekend (921-19) and made our way back to “The Swamp”, as they call it. This time our teammate, Jade Luzenberg was there with us. The previous two times that Chase and Jade competed against each other they came home 1 and 2! Jade had won at Loxley first, with Chase finishing 2nd. Then Chase won at Loxley with Jade finishing 2nd the next race! So, it’s safe to say that these two cats are very competitive with each other! With 13 other hotfoots from southeast Alabama and northwest Florida, our boys let it rip in the heat race! Chase jumped out front early, but Jade started reeling him in with just 2 to go! Jade peeked on the inside of Chase going into turn 3 coming for the white flag. Chase held him off as Jade made a final run at him coming for the checkered! It was Chase for the heat race win! I was excited…Chase was bent! He came in complaining that the car had no forward drive! He felt like he was a sitting duck as Jade was about to show him what was up! (and honestly, he was!) Jade certainly had the fastest car on the track! I asked Chase what he wanted me to do and his reply was, “change out my pull-bar bushing! They are worn out, I can feel it!” I had 2 spare sets in the shop at home, but I didn’t have any at the track in the trailer! I tried to calm Chase, but he was already getting into his own head! I told him that the track was greasy, and everyone was spinning, with little to no forward drive! He wasn’t having it! Adrian checked in by phone to get an update and I told her what was going on, so she tried to reason with Chase by phone! That didn’t help either. We continued back and forth, right up until showtime. As I was topping the car off with fuel, I had decided I had heard enough! We were at each other’s throats! I told Chase that he was defeating himself before he ever rolled onto the racetrack for the feature! I told him he was being ridiculous and there was not a single thing I could do about putting in fresh bushing at that moment, but I’d be damned if I was going to stand there and watch him defeat himself before he ever buckled into his racecar! He didn’t like what I had to say but I didn’t really care at that moment!!! We were both fired up! We both went silent and went separate ways! When it came time to buckle in for the feature, things were still unusually quiet between us. Chase broke the silence with an apology! He said “ I’m sorry Dad… I’m sorry for acting like a brat!” I told him it was cool, but I needed him to go give it all he had and if it wasn’t enough at the drop of the checkered flag then I would take full responsibility for not having the car 100%!...He went out and let it eat! There was only 1 car on that racetrack that was faster than Chase and that was our buddy Jade! Chase was patiently running 2nd to a guy out of Florida and Jade was on Chase like stink on poop! Jade made a pass on Chase for 2nd but a caution in the field gave Chase his spot back. As they went back green, Jade slightly overdrove going into turn 1 and jumped a guardrail. This mistake sent Jade to the rear of the field. Chase, however, began putting pressure on the leader for that top spot! The leader bobbled coming off of turn 4 and Chase was there to pounce! NEW LEADER!!!! WORE OUT BUSHING AND ALL!!!! Chase laid down some of the finest laps I’ve ever seen him make as he continued to lead the field in the swamp! Some late cautions proved to be beneficial to Jade as he wheeled his way back to the front! So here we are with Chase leading this thing and his teammate Jade right there in the 2nd spot! I’m very proud of these two young men! Chase brought home the win this time and Jade came home in the 2nd spot! Great run for both of these guys! We all celebrated our great finishes in Victory Lane together! It was special for Chase and me because Paw Paw George was able to come down for photos with us, as this would be his last race until he recovers from his 2nd knee surgery this year! That is a memory that will be cherished forever! (he had his surgery October 7, and is doing great!)

Old car on the left, new car on the right!

OK!!!.... So now to the big exciting news! We got Chase a new car!!! It’s not brand new, but it’s new to us and it is definitely an upgrade!!! Chase has been driving a 2004 Shaw chassis since he started racing modifieds and now we are rolling out in a 2013 Hughes Chassis with 2019 updates! I know this car is fast because this is the same car that our teammate Jade has been racing this season! Jade is upgrading too! We are putting our little ole power plant in this new ride, so we will still be racing with the same engine that Chase helped build in his high school vo-tech class under the guidance of his machine shop teacher, Ronald Parker. I’m excited to see how Chase adapts to this new chassis! One of the main compliments I get about Chase as a racer is how smooth of a driver he is. I hope this carries over into the new car as well. I’m proud to announce that Jade won at Tri-County Speedway his first night out in his new car on October 5th! Very exciting!!! We weren’t able to make this race because we had already began swapping parts to the new car. Chase will debut his new ride at Whynot Motorsports Park, in Meridian, MS on October 24th-26th at the Fall Classic! This chassis swap is the next phase in our partnership with the Luzenbergs and with Chase’s mentor, Noah Daspit. This move will put all 3 of these guys on the same chassis and allow them to share info and hopefully win a bunch of races as a team! To close this month, I want to dabble back on the disagreement between Chase and I at TriWe made up after that BIG win!!! County. First let me say, it’s no secret that we spend a pile of money on racing each year... And yes, we do have sponsors, and that does help tremendously! However, when it comes down to it, we still spend a fortune ourselves each year racing! Not to mention the time that we invest to keep our car mechanically sound! That makes things stressful for us both and we take our racing very serious! Now I’m not saying we don’t cut up and joke but when it’s time to be serious, we get serious! I know it’s a choice we make to race, so that’s not my point here…My point is this… I’m ok investing my time and money in something as long as I can see its making a positive impact on my kid’s future. With that said, Chase today vs. Chase 2 years ago is daylight and dark difference. I have watched Chase evolve into a respectable young man who is not

Jade wins first night out in the new car!!! afraid to get in there and get his hands dirty working on his own car or his buddy’s car. Chase would rather hang out with adults/men and talk about racing while working on cars than anything else. Chase has learned that respect is earned and can’t be bought. Chase has learned that the guy who spends the most money doesn’t always win. Chase has learned that 90% of the race is won in the shop each week. Chase has learned that his dad is not perfect. But…most importantly, Chase has learned that we win as a team and we lose as a team! When Chase and I tangled at TriCounty, I honestly didn’t know if those bushings were worn out or not, but I did know if I let him see me have any sign of concern/ doubt, then our night was over! Racing is just as much a mind game as it is a physical challenge! I could see he was about to beat himself and I had to call him out on it! I later used this as another life lesson for him. I explained to Chase that I could have agreed with him and who knows what the results would have been… instead I chose to fight/push him, and the result was a great accomplishment that made him proud of himself! He beat some great drivers that night with some awesome equipment! (I’m still teasing him about winning with those old worn out bushings!) I’m extremely proud of Chase and I can’t wait to see where he goes in life and in racing! I’ll always be his biggest fan and I hope he realizes how proud we are of him! For many years now I have preached this motto to my kids and I try to live by it myself, every single day of my life…”Always keep God first, be humble in success and gracious in defeat.” It’s always helped me be successful in my life and in business. That’s all for this month, I hope you all enjoy following along with our racing adventures! If you don’t have plans already, come up to Whynot and cheer Chase, Jade, and Noah on as they compete against the best drivers in the South! Until next time…Chavus

Along with both the museum and car show, the Mississippi National Guard and the Air National Guard will have static displays. This year we will again be helping the Wounded Minutemen of Mississippi organization. They help the members of all branches of service who were wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our veterans still need your help and will need help for years to come, not only physically and mentally but spiritually. Also, at the same time, November 14th to November 17th, Columbia will be hosting a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Picnic Committee is hoping with “The Wall That Heals” being in town at the same time as the museum will aid us in raising awareness of our time in Vietnam and help raise funds for today's wounded veterans who reside in Mississippi.
