Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine At the start of the day, you need to decide that, no matter what comes your way, you’re not going to get upset. No matter what somebody says, you’re not going to be offended. No matter what delays, disappointments, bad breaks, you’re not going to get sour. You’ve already made up your mind to stay in peace. Here’s a key: your happiness is not somebody else’s responsibility. You are responsible for your own happiness. Too often we’re counting on other people to keep us fixed. Someone else to keep us cheered up, encouraged, feeling good about ourselves. You’re putting too much pressure on the people in your life. Let them off the hook. Nobody can keep you fixed except our Heavenly Father. Don’t go to people trying to get what only God can give. When God puts a dream in your heart, there will always be people that are jealous, people that try to discredit you, get you riled up. Don’t take the bait. That’s not a battle you have to fight. They are a distraction trying to get you off course, so you miss your purpose. Your assignment is too important to be distracted by jealous, small-minded people. God will not allow things to happen that won’t somehow move you to your destiny. … Joel Osteen

Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo I’d like to thank those who braved the rain, fog, cold windy first weekend of April to attend the Gulf Coast Auto Show. Thanks to you we raised a little over a thousand dollars to put toward our handicap van program. (by the way we are in the market for a used factory handicap van that we can refurbish) as you know all the proceeds we get from our 1st Saturday night cruise-in’s at Edgewater Mall go to the van that we give away at Christmas time to a family in need with a child who is confined to a wheelchair. …. As I put the May issue to bed and off to the press I would like to remind everyone to get out and enjoy some of the events that are listed in this months MotorSports. Your support goes a long way to help the charities of the clubs and organizations who are putting the shows and cruise-in’ on. Here are a few emails…. was maybe 2 1/2 years old and had just recovered from an accident. Someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a get-well gift and it was one of my favorite toys. Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought him a little cup of 'tea', which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home. My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was “just the cutest thing!” My Mom waited, and sure enough, here I come down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watches him drink it up. Then she says, (as only a mother would know... :) “Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get water is the toilet?” Jimbo, I was due for an appointment with the gynecologist later in the week. Early one morning, I received a call from the doctor’s office to tell me that I had been rescheduled for that morning at 9:30 am. I had only just packed everyone off to work and school, and it was already around 8:45am. The trip to his office took about 35 minutes, so I didn't have any time to spare. As most women do, I like to take a little extra effort over hygiene when making such visits, but this time I wasn’t going to be able to make the full effort. So, I rushed upstairs, threw off my pajamas, wet the washcloth that was sitting next to the sink, and gave myself a quick wash in that area to make sure I was at least presentable. I threw the washcloth in the clothes basket, donned some clothes, hopped in the car and raced to my appointment. I was in the waiting room for only a few minutes when I was called in. Knowing the procedure, as I’m sure you do, I hopped up on the table, looked over at the other side of the room and pretended that I was in Paris or some other place a million miles away. I was a little surprised when the doctor said, “My, we have made an extra effort this morning, haven’t we?” I didn’t respond. After the appointment, I heaved a sigh of relief and went home. The rest of the day was normal .. Some shopping, cleaning, cooking. After school when my 6 year old daughter was playing, she called out from the bathroom, “Mommy, where’s my washcloth?” I told her to get another one from the cupboard. She replied, “No, I need the one that was here by the sink, it had all my glitter and sparkles saved inside it.” Never going back to that doctor again……….. never.

The spring cleaning of the Carriage House has been moving along with some reasonable success. Things are improving to the point that I no longer have to move what seems to be tons of stuff just to work on one of my projects. I am also making more headway in the big truck project, and am quite pleased with our recent exhaust completion. I was able to start it up and beginning the cure cycles on the heat paint that I applied. The exhaust note sounds great as I start it up from time to time. Too bad I can’t share those sounds here in print. And the 5.3 LS motor should be more than ample to pull this little truck around. I recently brought the hood to some guys I met during one of my Shop Scene articles. I have quickly become fans of their work and wanted to get them to do some repairs to the hood that I might have just messed up due to my lack of skills in solving those issues. More on that progress in the coming months. The car show season and cruise night circuit has really ramped up. Its great seeing new rides and even new folks that have joined this automotive hobby/lifestyle/obsession. That said let us all remember to be welcoming and encouraging with the new people that wish to be a part of this fun with cars scene. I also am aware that many have looked down on what the young folks do, and how and what they do with their choice of transportation and modifying those vehicles. Might I just ask you to remember and harken back to the days when you too entered in to this automotive madness your rides may have been called jalopies or junkers, or even other not so nice names. So please be patient with the youngsters, they will be you in a few more decades. But to me they are the keepers of the torch in this sport. So if you can be a bit patient with them and show them some respect when you see the quality and craftsmanship in their work, when warranted. A little of this can go a really long way in keeping that torch fueled. I recently had an issue with the transmission in the black Chevy truck. And needed some expert to take care of that issue. After asking a few of my gearhead friends, one name kept being recommended. So a call was made and an appointment set and away we went. Mr. Kenny Thomas of Thomas Transmission of Gautier Ms. Is what I would call an expert or a specialist in transmission repairs. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a call back the next day and was informed, we were fixed up and ready to go. I highly recommend this to be The place to go for all of your automatic transmission woes. I was quite happy with the price as well. Oh and he speaks fluent gearhead as well. So, all is getting right slowly but surely in the Carriage House, and the Queen is happy as well. I want to wish my number 2 grandson, Bryce a Happy 6th Birthday this month, and would like to wish all of you who are and fill the role of mothers a Very Happy Mothers Day. As luck would have it my birthday falls on that day too. So, I get to share an even more special day with my mother, I think that’s kind of cool. Till next month, Gizmo.

The next evening we headed up to Picayune for their Cruise night and they had a great turnout with 90 plus rides. And as usual the ladies shopped a little.

The Spring Month's bring a lot of busy weekends for events. Started this month with the Mississippi Mustang Club at Charlie Henderson Ford in Waveland. Rained most of the day on this one but they still had a nice turnout of diehards supporting them. My next stop is one of those favorites supporting the kids. The event is Hancock High Schools commitment to graduate. Great event showing the students there's options in the automotive industry for their future. Made a run over to Slidell on the 5th Sat. for a benefit at Deep South Audio. They had a nice turnout at this one.

The next stop was the Annual Gulf Coast Auto Show hosted by the Coast Cruizers. This is their main fundraiser for the special needs van they give away each year to a family that needs the van for a better quality of life for their child. It was fun as always. Hung around after the show for their monthly 1st Saturday Edgewater Mall cruise in.

That night I hung around the Kiln for the cruise on in cafe's cruise in.

Also hit the Silver Slipper Casino weekly car bike and jeep nights as usual. Remember to watch for our friends out riding their bikes also. Allen

ONLY CAR ITEMS ALLOWED

By: Joyce Lachaussee It looked like an Easter egg hunt at the Hardee's Breakfast Cruise In with all the pretty bright colored cars. Springtime makes everyone want to get out and show off their babies. 1934 was the beginning of the turn around for the nations economy from the Great Depression. It also saw the rise of Adolph Hitler in Germany, Moa-Tse Tung in China, the demise of American modern day bandits - Bonnie & Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson and the beginning of the great dust bowl. FDR began the public works program, better known as the WPA, to help kick start the economy. And this 1934 Ford truck began it's debut. You just wonder who at that time had enough money to purchase a vehicle. It certainly has a different look from when it first began it's long storied life. Eddie Havard of Lucedale recently traded a camper for this truck in North Carolina. Eddie has been working with and around cars most of his life and identifies himself as a shade tree mechanic. He does mechanical work on his vehicles but says he's not into body work. In addition to this little cutie,, he has a '66 Fleetside Chevy, a '67 Camero and a '76 Corvette. Eddie retired from the Southern Company and is married with children. It's always a pleasure to see a piece of history like this. John Brennan of Grand Bay made his first visit to the cruise in with this 1972 Chevy C10. Some of you may recognize this truck from Cruisin the Coast. This truck was featured on one of the Cruisin the Coast T-Shirts. It certainly makes for a good looking model. This C10 has a big block twin turbo 434 with ONLY 1200 horsepower. It's fully loaded with disc brakes, power steering and air. John said it isn't too bad on gas and he and his wife of 32 years feel comfortable on the Interstate or just playing with this beauty (or should I say beast with all that HP) at all the car shows. John's brother-in law bought this truck new and after his death, John obtained it and did a complete restoration. John said several friends helped him along the journey to the finished product you see here. John and his wife own Bay Performance and Fabrications in Grand Bay and do all types of fabrications from unique stairwells to common items. He has begun work on a second restoration of a '72 C10. Hopefully when completed, John will bring it to Lucedale Hardee's Cruise In to show it off.

John and Donna Wicker of Rocky Creek are regulars at the cruise in and they bring this '70 Chevy Nova they have had for 8 years. John did a complete frame off restoration in less than a year! John is a big hunter but said he practically gave it up for the year he was restoring his Nova. Now that's an act of love. This Nova has a modern LS engine and transmission. This was his first restoration and by the looks of the car, he could get into this business as a seasoned professional. John and Donna own John's Auto Repair in Lucedale and are all too familiar with the mechanical side of cars. This car was finished in time for the 2012 Cruisin the Coast and John and at that time his 3 year old son took off to cruise. Wasn't long before the 3 year old asked to switch rides and get in his Mom's air conditioned family car. Needless to say this car now sports cold air.

Sometimes you kind of shake your head at the things you might see at the Cruise In like this golf club turned spinning rod and reel. It seems these car buffs will modify anything! All are welcome at the Lucedale Hardee's Cruise In every 2nd Friday of the month beginning at 7:30-til. Come with or without a restored car, truck, rat rod, etc. You are invited to bring car items to the swap meet

By: Lynne Lightfoot Veterans Day will be on Monday, November 11th this year. I know that is six months away, but we car folks tend to be busy. I want you to know about this early so you can mark your calendars now. New Orleans has only one Veterans Day Parade and it will be held this year on Saturday, November 9th . I was privileged to assist with last year’s parade and am a proud Board member this year. Veterans are very near and dear to me. My father, husband, uncle, cousins and step - sons are all Veterans. They each risked everything to serve our country. My cousin, John Kirwin, made the ultimate sacrifice when he died as a prisoner of war in the Korean Death March. I take every opportunity to honor these men and all the men and women who have served. The 5th Annual Lakeview Veterans Day Parade will travel up and down Harrison Avenue in New Orleans. We have been fortunate to have the help and support of many local military and law enforcement agencies, including local VFWs, American Legions, ROTC units and Boy Scout Troops. Likewise, The Horseless Carriage Club of New Orleans, Combel’s Customs Cruisers, The Patriot American Legion Riders and members of local Corvette Clubs have participated in the past and have pledged to do so again. Any and all Veterans, regardless of where and how you qualify for that auspicious title, are invited to parade with us. Veterans who cannot , or do not wish to , walk the route will be offered cars to ride in. That’s where you come in. We are asking for owners of convertible s to drive their car s in the parade to provide a ride for a Veteran. If you are a Veteran and you have your own classic car (pre - 1989) that you would like to drive in the parade, we’d love to have you do so. If you have a tribute vehicle of any kind – either a tribute to America, her Veterans, military, a branch of the military, the POW/MIAs, or if you have a vintage military vehicle, please sign up to parade with us. We want all of our Veterans to know how much we appreciate their service and that we will never, ever forget them. If you or someone you know is a Veteran please get the name and contact information to us so we can ensure they are included in this event. Would you or your company like to be a sponsor of our event to help offset costs incurred? We have five levels of sponsorship: Medal of Honor Sponsor - $1,000; Silver Star Sponsor - $500; Bronze Star Sponsor - $250; Victory Sponsor - $100; and Helping Heroes Sponsor - $25. Sponsorships and other donations may be made at http://www.lakeviewvetsparade.org . DON’T WAIT! If you want to participate or assist us with the Parade, please call me today at (504) 228-1337 or email me at photohoe70094@gmail.com . For more information about the parade, go to www.lakeviewvetsparade.org . You can also go to Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/events/312506786273717/ or Twitter @LakeviewVets.

Pulling a 7,000 pound trailer is a little touchy with a Ford F-150, but doable with a load leveler and sway bars, something that drives me crazy though is people who enter the interstate via an onramp and expect to merge with 70 MPH traffic at 40 MPH and are not even looking until the last minute on where they will fit into traffic. Please look early, decide your place, adjust your speed and go for it. Rant over, lol! I just got home from New Roads, LA and the 10th Annual Spring Street Festival Car Show. It’s always a great show and always a great time with some of the nicest people you could imagine. This is my 4th year to do their show, they never fail to hold a great car show and take care of me. If you’ve never been to New Roads, LA, check it out next March, an old, quaint little river town down on the False River bubbling with charm. New Roads is a tourist/retirement town. The False River was once a part of the Mississippi River, until an eleven mile section at New Roads was cut out of the river to improve the Mississippi’s river navigation. Now the False River is an eleven mile long lake as wide as the Mississippi River is. Boating, skiing, fishing, fishing tournaments, etc you can do it there. Sunday morning as I was waking up I could hear the announcements for the start of a fishing tournament. The twenty two miles around the lake are covered with homes, cottages and fishing camps. I arrived mid afternoon on Friday, got the Hot Rod Show trailer into position and checked in to Moral’s Courtyard Motel downtown. It was probably built in the 1950’s and retains that vintage charm, very clean and nice. Then I joined the boys for fried catfish at Satterfield’s, just down the street on the lake where we caught up, told lies and talked about the car show coming up the next day. I got to bed early and set the clock for 5:30 am, always up early on car show days, especially when setup is involved. We had the Hot Rod Show trailer to set up and 3 more sound systems spread around town. But first a walk of two blocks brought me to Country Chef Café for breakfast. All the guys are in there eating breakfast and drinking coffee. After breakfast and a thermos of black coffee for the day, we get going on the set up. I started music up at 8 am and started calling veterans to the Hot Rod Show a liitle before 9 am with God Bless The USA and then American Trilogy. A good number of

you know preachers and music… from the pulpit, can be a bad thing. I had to wait another five minutes before arriving at my destination and I was sweating bullets. Heads Up and Preacher talking about my music several times in his sermon was all I could think about. As soon as I put the truck into park, I picked up my phone to finish the email that had stopped my heart. The next sentence said…”He enjoyed both your show and the music and said it brought back good memories. I emailed Wade back and told him what he did to me, lol. My thanks to George, Phillip, Wade and all the guys that makes the New Roads Car Show so special every March! Next up for Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show is Burning Up The Beaches in Destin, FL, May 2-4, one of my favorite shows and its all for a very good charity, Arc of The Emerald Coast, a disability service group that supports Autism, Down Syndrome and other developmental disabilities . BUTB is a first rate car show held is a Disney World type shopping center setting. The most beautiful place of any shows we do. Destin Commons is just a cool place for a car show. With your registration of $80, three parties with live music and they feed two people for three nights. All kind of door prizes at Burning Up The Beaches, Mega 50/50, lots of cars and its all for a great charity. We’ll get you the story on this great show next month. To me it’s all about keeping that American Graffiti, 17 FOREVER and great memories state of mind alive and having fun at car shows that take you back in time! til next month…

veterans were represented as we honored them and kicked off the show with the National Anthem at 9 am. I have so much material now for Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show I can really wow the crowd with my best stuff in just one day and I delivered. We set a new record for the Mega 50/50 with $3,770. Pointe Coupee Hospice received $1,885 and the lady who won, that said she had never won anything in her life won $1,885. We had 300 cars, a lot of vendors and everyone had a great time. The show is sponsored by Auto Zone, the City of New Roads, Main Street Merchants and the Pointe Coupee Cruisers. Saturday after getting the Hot Rod Show trailer stuff packed away for travel, it was back to Satterfield’s with all the guys to dissect the show and how good everything went, I then walked back to the motel and after cleaning up a bit out the back door across the parking lot to Moral’s Seafood for their seafood platter, always a treat. Sunday morning I ate breakfast again at Country Chef, hooked up the trailer and headed home. A couple days later I was on my way to see a friend at his business. I had stopped at a red light and decided to check my email while waiting at the light. I got an email from the local banker Wade who handles my contract and me getting paid. It started out with “Just A Heads Up” never a good sign. Just before the light turned green I also read “Sunday our Priest mentioned your music and show several times in his sermon.” That was all I could read before moving on in traffic. My heart stopped,

MY small grandson got lost at the mall the other day. He approached a uniformed officer and told him he lost his grandpa. The officer said "What's his name?" He said "grandpa" Laughing the officer said "What's he like?" My grandson said "Crown Royal and women with big ones" Never lose your kids.

By: “the Car Show Diva” Jeanie Rupprecht Some forty something years ago, HE&M Saw founder, Gerald Harris, bought an automobile at auction. Nothing special or unusual about that, except for what he bought was an original 1954 Hudson Hornet. Having admired Hudson’s as a young man, he bought his first around 1946. A 1937 Hudson Terraplane Business Coupe, purchased from a wrecking yard for the ripe sum of $75, which was a lot of money back then. Although that first Hudson had a bad cam, young Gerry Harris replaced it and off he went. The body rust on the frame and floor pans was no deterrent to a young man with a fast car. Well, until he revved the engine up past 7500 RPM and blew up the motor. His love affair with Hudson’s didn’t stop there and in 1953 he bought a 1950 model and after that, he purchased a 1951 Hudson Hornet. The 1951 Hudson Hornet was powerful and fast. It featured Hudson’s highcompression straight six “H-145” engine and had a whopping 145HP. But aside from that, it had Hudson’s new “step-down” body style, which lowered the center of gravity and allowed that road hugging ride, but also a very stylish and sleek look. Then, while working as a car salesman in 1954-56, Mr. Harris did as most car salesmen do, he upgraded. This time it was into a 1953 Hornet. Starting in ’52, Hudson made an optional “twin-H”, or twin one barrel carburetor, set-up available. And with that option, this Hudson was faster than its predecessors, but Mr. Harris tells us that, while weighing in at over 3600lbs, “the gas mileage was very poor”. Mr. Harris also says he wasn’t a very good car salesman and quit that to pursue “other options”. And boy, are we happy he did, because a few years later he founded Harris Engineering and Manufacturing, now in its second generation and known as HE&M Saw, Inc. So, back to this 1954 Hudson Hornet, which, by the way, was the last car the Hudson Motor Company produced before their merger with Nash-Kelvinator, forming the American Motor Company (AMC). Somewhere between 1976 and 1980, Mr. Harris heard of a 1954 Hudson Hornet Club Coupe that was to be sold at an antique car auction near Silver Dollar City, Missouri. The car had belonged to the son of a friend, and as the story goes, this car had not been sold by the original dealership and had been put into storage, along with some other unsold vehicles. Essentially, these cars were new, never sold and in original condition. Today we use the term “new-old stock”, new and never sold and with few or no miles. The young man bought the “new” car out of the storage unit and used it during his college days, and years later consigned it with an antique car auction house to sell. And that is where Mr. Harris acquired the ’54 Hornet.

12

MAY 2019

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

The selling price was $2200 and another $4000 was invested into having it painted and some re-chroming done. The big car drove well, but after a while, Mr. Harris realized that with no power steering and no power brakes, his new ‘80’s model car was a much nicer ride and in 1983, he parked the Hudson. At first, the Hudson was stored outside with a tarp over it, but a few years later, Mr. Harris built a large garage and it was stored there. Until a few weeks ago, when Mr. Harris’ son, Doug Harris, President and CEO of HE&M Saw, Inc., decided that it just wouldn’t do to let it continue to sit and deteriorate. After not having been tagged since 1989, the Hudson was pulled out and loaded onto a trailer for transport to Lawrenceville, Georgia, where Sam Mahdavi, of Sam’s Garage and Mahdavi Motorsports, will give it a total restoration. Because of the stock car racing domination of the Hudson Hornet in the early ‘50’s, back when “stock car” actually meant bone stock, NASCAR fans have long revered the Hornets’ contributions as legendary. This fact was hammered home and made known to a whole new generation with the appearance of “Doc Hudson”, the Original Hudson Hornet, in the Pixar film “Cars”. In light of all that, and it being an all original, numbers matching car, the complete restoration will bring it back to its original condition; no fuel injection, LS motor or airride suspension for this “legend”. HE&M Saw and its owner, Doug Harris, are proud to be able to save this piece of automotive history and will be close to the action for all the work. We expect this to take up to 2 years and you can see it all documented on the next 2 seasons of Sam’s Garage, produced by PowerScope Productions and featured on MotorTrendTV, Saturdays at 8 am central and Sundays at 7 am central. To follow “Project Hudson Hornet”, like and follow us on Facebook and Twitter (both @hemsaw), we’ll be posting pictures as the project progresses.

cars themselves. The design introduced a number of innovative ideas. The most copied was the enclosed fenders, thus covering the mud and grime built up on the underside. The radiator cap was moved under the hood, which itself was later modified to cover the cowl, and end at the base of the windshield. For engineering, the rear kickup on the chassis frame was eliminated by the adoption of a 'banjo' frame. Unlike contemporary practice, the rear axle was placed through large openings on both sides of the frame, with rubber snubbers to absorb any shock if the car axle should make contact. This in turn permitted a wider body. To help lower the car, the rear springs were mounted on the outer sides of the chassis frame and not under the frame. This idea was eventually copied by other manufacturers - Chrysler, for example, in 1957. For 1934, Graham introduced a crankshaft-driven supercharger, designed in-house by Graham Assistant Chief Engineer Floyd F. Graham Brothers Kishline. At first offered only in the top eight-cylinder models, when After successful involvement in a glass manufacturing company the eights were dropped for 1936, the supercharger was adapted to (eventually sold to Libbey Owens Ford brothers Joseph B., Robert the six. manufactured by Graham-Paige. While some 1500 Hollywoods were built, it did not stop the company's slide. After its public introduction, orders poured in. However, manufacturing difficulties caused months of delay before deliveries began. Having bodies ultimately built by the coachbuilder Hayes did not help. Customers tired of waiting, and most of the orders were cancelled. Despite an enthusiastic initial public response, the car actually ended up being a worse flop in the sales department for both Graham and Hupmobile than either firm's respective preceding models. The company suspended manufacturing in September 1940, only to reopen its plant for military production for World War II. The company resumed automobile production in 1946 producing a modern-looking new car, the 1947 Frazer, named for new Graham-Paige President Joseph Frazer, in partnership with Henry J. Kaiser. It also began production of farm equipment under the Rototiller name. In August 1945, Graham-Paige announced plans to resume production under the Graham name, but the plan never materialized. On February 5, 1947, Graham-Paige stockholders approved the transfer of all their automotive assets to Kaiser-Frazer, an automobile company formed by Frazer and Kaiser, in return for 750,000 shares of Kaiser-Frazer stock and other considerations. Graham's manufacturing facilities on Warren Avenue were sold to Chrysler, who used the plants first for DeSoto body and engine production, and finally for assembly of the Imperial for the 1959, 1960, and 1961 model years. In 1952, Graham-Paige dropped the "Motors" from its name and branched into real estate, and under the direction of Irving Mitchell Felt, bought such properties as the Roosevelt Raceway in New York, and in 1959 a controlling interest in the old Madison Square Garden (built 1925). In 1962, the firm changed its name to the Madison Square Garden Corporation, which was later absorbed by Gulf & Western Industries. Currently Madison Square Garden is part of Madison Square Garden, L.P., of which a majority interest is owned by Cablevision Systems Corporation.

The Sharknose was soon dropped and all focus was on the Hollywood. Hollywood body was built from the leftover Cord 810 body molds. From the firewall back it was identical to the Cord.

The molds were actually owned by Huppmobile which had a agreement to build the Hollywood as well as a Identical model called the Skylark which was marketed by Huppmobile. Less than 300 Skylarks were made. 1941 Graham Hollywood Model 106 Supercharged inline 6 built by Continental Motors. Standard motor was 95hp and the supercharged boosted hp to 125. Welcome back to my monthly article on Kustom pieces. Every day I think about projects not too challenging that I can put into this article so the readers at home could try their hand at some cool projects, This month my buddy handed me a hatchet and I figured it would be a cool little piece. Remember you can freely contact me and suggest new projects that I might include. Make sure you send me images of your projects if you did it yourself at home. I’d love to see and share it !!!!

8. After I zentangled it up the handle and repeated on opposite side I seen a space that I wanted filled. I thought a diamond pattern would be cool so that’s where I went and it would go hand and hand with the zentangle that I decided to go with on the handle.

1. First I examined the hatchet and detail it had from the beginning. I liked the strap that was attached so I figured I would stay with the same color scheme to make it a solid piece. 2. As you already know from previous articles that we always prep the surface with a grey scratch pad and then clean with wax and grease remover. 3. I went ahead and masked the handle because I knew I would be concentrating on the blade more than rest. Taping it off also let me focus on it more to help decide what I would like to design. 4. I used my plotter and PC to create a cool old school ornate style stencil that I think would look cool on the blade. I measured the blade and just made sure it would cover all sides before I cut it. I weeded out what wasn’t needed and applied the transfer tape. 5. After I completed the stencil I measured the blade and cut the stencil into 3 pieces that I would use all over the blade. If you ever need something I cut on a file to reproduce just shoot me an email and I will send you the file so you too can recreate this exact piece. 6. Applying the stencils is kind of tricky and takes a lot of patience. I usually clean the surface first before attempting the laying of stencils but sometimes forget. Just make sure you know the stencil won’t pull up what's underneath if you are attempting a multi layered piece. On this blade I layed it on fully and then cut off access before pulling transfer tape off. I then repeated this process on reverse side, top, and bottom of blade until I was done.

9. Now that I have everything masked off for art I need to take a little extra precaution and mask the handles top half closer to the blade because I will be spraying metallic paint and it’s notorious for traveling and leaving overspray. That is the last thing I want especially after all this masking. 10. Now it’s time to base it. I start with the blade and cover all angles making sure I spray away from handle. After I do the handle I unmask the overspray tape very carefully. I decided when taping the design that I wanted to spray from the bottom of handle up with a little feathering. That way when I remove the zentangle design and diamonds it fades from heavy to nothing and makes a cool blend pattern. I do this on both sides very slowly and a few coats to make sure its covered. I used the natural sunlight in this step to make sure it all was even. Better believe that the sun will tell you the truth. They also have many natural sunlight flashlights you can buy to double check it if you would like. I don’t want to pull the stencils before time so I set it aside and take my time while I clean my airbrush and straighten up a little. Now that I have given it enough time to flash I slowly start to pull every stencil off. For the small areas I use a dental pick tool and for the larger I use my trusty fingernail. 11. Now that I have removed all the stencils I double check for small stencils that may have been overlooked which is very easy to do. Triple check sometimes because there is nothing worse than finding a lone survivor when you already layed the clear coat on top. All and all its looking pretty cool. I’ve never done a hatchet before and it came out pretty interesting. I will add the clear coat later and re-attach the lanyard on bottom that matches the color scheme.

7. Next I started a zentangle like pattern after laying a border around the entire handle first. It is a pretty easy pattern once you get started. Just do one angle a few times and then flow the other way as many times as you see fit. There are no bad designs when it comes to fineline. Just fill it up and it will be just fine if you fill it up I promise. Feel free to be creative.

DIRT TRACK REVIVAL By: Chavus Holland Welcome back everyone! I've got a BUNCH to cover in a little bit of space this month, so let's dive right in! It was March 23, this would be our first trip this season to Whynot Motorsports Park, aka “The House of Hook” in Meridian, MS. (This was only Chase's 2nd time to race here!) This race track is AWESOME!!! Really fine facility! 21 of the meanest modifieds in the South showed up ready to compete for that top spot in this huge race, appropriately named, “The Battle of the States”. The winner in each division goes home with a “Wrestling Style” title belt and a pocket full of cash! Chase's mentor, Noah Daspit, was in the house as well as hotfoots such as Toby Hodge, Chad Williams, Ben Davis, Gregg Hollingsworth, Riley Brown, Heath Williams, Robert Casada, asphalt late model superstar Casey Roderick, and many others! It was sure to be a barn burner!!!

engine…I lean in the window and say “what's wrong?” Chase replies “I sucked out there! I feel like I'm spinning the tires and not going anywhere! I could barely mash the gas pedal!” Our engine should be turning a max of around 8,000 RPMs with the gear we had in it, he could only give it enough throttle to turn 6,200 max RPMs in qualifying. This made Chase feel like he was turtle slow out there! So, by now I'm smiling and he's getting aggravated because he thinks I'm laughing at him. I pulled myself together and said “Dude! You looked super-fast to me! I'm pretty sure we're in top 10 fastest possibly top 5!” He said, “There's NO WAY!” I was half right, he qualified 8th out of 21 cars! We made a couple quick adjustments and got ready to start 4th in the 2nd heat race! At the drop of the green flag Chase took to the high side and made a charge to the front. He passed Brown, and Roderick, for 3rd and then 2nd position, as he began to take aim at the leader Toby Hodge! Hodge had put a few car links on Chase and Chase had begun to gap the rest of the field each lap! Our car was real fast, but I could tell we were skating on top of the track and we just didn't look like we had good forward drive! As Chase began to push it to the limit to try and reel in Hodge for the lead, the rear end got out from under him and took him for a loop in turn 3! Thank goodness he was so far ahead of the rest of the pack we were clear of any damage! They sent us to the rear and Chase wasted no time hustling his way back up to a 6th place finish at the checkered! We located Noah and got some tuning advice from him to hopefully get us hooked into the racetrack! We went to work to get ready for the feature event! We finished up our work and Chase and Jade wanted to go meet Casey Roderick in person, so we made our way over to his pit area. Casey was there, working on his own car.

Jade and Chase suiting up for Battle of the States at Whynot! Chase went out for hot laps/qualifying and I thought he looked awesome! He came in shaking his head in disappointment as he was driving towards the trailer! I was trembling and trying to fight back the emotion and excitement at the same time! (if y'all haven't realized by now, I'm very intense on race day!) We obviously had different opinions on how things were going so far! He kills the

He was super cool to us and stopped what he was doing to meet us all and talk like old friends! I explained to him that Chase and Jade were both 15 year old racers and they looked up to him as a racer! We talked about his recent asphalt win, (“The Baby Rattler 125”) and I'm telling you all, he was a real cool dude! Much respect to him! He told us he is very new to dirt racing (only his 2nd time in a dirt modified) but he said he LOVES it and that certain aspects of it is very helpful for his asphalt driving career. He wished Chase and Jade good luck in the feature and they wished him the same. Feature race time! We start 12th in the 21 car field ready for 25 laps of battle! Chase got up on that wheel and went to work from the very beginning! He was able to race anywhere on the race track and was 3 or 4 wide throughout most of the 25 lap race! The high side was definitely his favorite line for the night! Chase raced several laps side by side with Roderick, before finally overtaking that position! Chase raced hard and clean all night! He only touched one guy with his front bumper, and that was after the guy had bullied his way past Chase! So, Chase kind of helped him on into the turn to let him know he didn't appreciate it! Overall it was a fantastic night for the Chase1Motorsports Team! We finished in 8th in the feature and we had a blast! Casey Roderick passed by our pit after the feature with a thumbs up out the window to Chase! AWESOME!!! Our friend Noah Daspit brought home that title belt and the money to his home in Kiln, MS! Congrats to him! Speaking of Noah, I contacted him early the next week to schedule an appointment for a check-up on our hotrod, to try and figure out what Chase was complaining about. For several races now, Chase had told me our car had little to no drive off the corners. We met Noah at his shop on a Friday and explained the issues and after 4 or 5 hours we were heading back home! Noah found a busted left rear shock was the culprit and he was surprised we were doing as good as we were with that issue! While we were there, Noah introduced us to a new set-up that was sure to give us more drive and bite but, would also require Chase to change his driving style to make it work! We were ready to try it out the following night, March 30, at Hattiesburg Speedway! Even with a heavy threat of rain in the area, Hattiesburg Speedway took a chance at getting the races in!

The race track was smooth and full of grip! So, with our new “tighter” set-up we were pushing like a dump truck! I was in contact with Noah throughout the night via text and calls as he helped us dial it in and make it more drivable for Chase by feature race time! We started 6th in the field of 15 modifieds and was moving forward before the rain set in and stopped our feature race right at the halfway point! We had moved up in the 4th position and were getting better! So, we came home 4th overall, not a bad night!

MAY 2019

The following week we made plans to return to Whynot…this time to compete with the national traveling series USMTS modifieds! We were super excited as we were almost to Laurel Saturday evening on our way to Meridian, when I got a call from a friend to tell me they had to cancel the show due to rain! What a disappointment! All dressed up and nowhere to go! We turned our rig around and started heading back South! Here it is, Saturday evening, we've got a car ready to race and we're heading home! Not today Y'all!!! We've got to find a track to race on TONIGHT!!!...and so we did! Now we were Baton Rouge bound! I texted Noah and got a gear and track assessment and we were set to go! We were welcomed and greeted by track personnel, racers, and fans! We changed the gear and got ready to get down! We started front row outside in the heat with only 5 modifieds registered for our class. Chase jumped out front and never looked back and he had half tracked the field as the checkered flag waved! It was a great feeling, but I know racing and I know anything can happen at any time!!! We got ready for the feature.

Chase and Paw Paw George working on some cosmetic repairs! The Feature was looking much like a repeat of the heat as Chase was all alone, way out front, looking like an easy win for “the Young Gun” in Baton Rouge, LA! Not so fast tho!!!…the car in 2nd place PURPOSELY spins himself out so to bring out a caution! It wasn't even a good performance! However, I can't blame him, we've done it before too in a small group of cars to give ourselves 1 more shot at the leader. It's a classic racing strategy! Well it worked out for him! As we slowed down under caution and were idling around waiting to go back green…OUR CAR DIES!!!! WHAT THE HECK???? You're talking about a helpless feeling!!! I run towards the pit exit, along with my buddy Travis Marsh, so we could try to see what's wrong! Meanwhile, they have a push truck pushing Chase around as he tries to get re-fired on the track! We are frantically waving for him to steer off the track, but Chase doesn't see us, and they eventually push him into the infield so they can continue with the races! After the races were over, I walked across the track and had the car fired up and running in seconds! I killed the engine and turned to Chase...Chase was BENT! I calmed him with a hug and as I held him tightly, I told him how proud I was of him and that I loved him! I told him how awesome he had done, and I assured him this was just a freak incident that happens in racing! I assured him if he sticks with racing then he will certainly see crazier things happen in his career! When I turned him loose, I looked around and we had a small crowd of track personnel looking and listening unbeknownst to me! As all of them acknowledged me, one of the guys said (in his Cajun accent) “now that's how you do it right there! You encouraged that little man and that's how you supposed to talk to people!” I said, “look, he's only 15 and I'm proud of this little cat no matter what!” He reassured me that I was parenting the right way!...ANYWAY…I almost forgot to tell you all what happened! The coil wire fell off!!! I know what you're probably thinking! How STUPID!!! Well, it was electrical taped on as well as ziptied! Like I said it was a freak

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

incident! Upon further inspection (later in the week) it appeared that the coil had shorted out and the tower had melted and almost caught on fire! It had melted the tape and allowed the wire to slip off! We fixed that problem and got ready for our next race. Hattiesburg Speedway was the place to be on Friday April 12th! Twenty modifieds registered to race and we were starting on the pole in the first of 3 heat races! We crossed the line 2nd at the checkered and was told at tech that we were the official winner after the 1st place car was DQ'd for running illegal tires! It was still a great race! Our car was the best it's ever been! This meant we would be starting on the pole for the Feature event! We adjusted on our car preparing for a slick track by feature race time! Hattiesburg has a new dirt surface this season and we are all still trying to figure it out! It's a great surface with tons of grip! We are used to the track slicking off by feature time, so we still want to adjust accordingly. We obviously missed and had over tightened the car for the feature! I realized when Chase pulled onto the track and stood down on it, I saw how tight he was! I was a nervous wreck! Chase, however, was calm as could be! At the drop of the green, Chase lead the huge field of hotrods down the front straightaway and into turn 1! He lead the first lap before being passed clean on the inside by Lance Walker out of Jackson, MS. Chase was tight and was having to hesitate to turn the car before picking up the throttle in the middle of the turns. This left the bottom lane open for competitors to get under him! Several laps later, as Chase was searching for a smooth way to navigate the track (which was beginning to rut up in places) he fell back to 3rd. As he and the 2 cars in front of him began to lap the field, the now 2nd place car tangled with a lapped car and Chase snatched back that 2nd position on the high side! The caution waved and they lined them back up with Chase in the 3rd spot. He had used the caution laps to evaluate the track and little did they know he had mapped out a path and he was ready to go! Our car was still a little tight but Chase was able to use the topside and extra horsepower to break the car loose and get it pointed in the right direction for the final few laps bringing us home with an impressive 2nd place finish in front of a huge group of hotrods! I'm EXTREMELY PROUD of Chase and the performances he's giving us so far this season!!! I'm going to wrap this up right here for now‌ I could go on and on! Thank you all so much for all the love and support! We couldn't do this without all our sponsors and fans!!! I want to thank you all for following along with our racing adventures! We really appreciate it! Thank you for reading! Until next time‌Chavus

A Summer Memory When I was young the sound of the Ice Cream Truck in the neighborhood meant that warm weather had arrived. That twinkly music could turn children’s heads in the direction of the music and cause their mouth to water and their eyes to have a look of longing. It might be the same ice cream truck as last summer with frozen Popsicles, Fudgesicles, Push-Ups, Eskimo Pies, and chocolate coated ice cream bars, or it could be a new retailer entering the market with different treats. It was my obligation to the neighborhood to inspect the old or new vendor and gain information to pass along to others. I would never shirk my obligations! We didn’t have the bicycle powered, dry ice cooled, ice cream vendors in my little town, but we did have vans that dispensed the goodies. We would hear the music and line up together waiting with anticipation for him to come down the street and stop for us. We would then sit around and eat our individual choices, while laughing, talking and teasing one another. What great fun that was! It was quite an event in my small home town. It was not consistent, but for a couple of years we had a “Mister Softee” truck that would come through the neighborhood. This was a huge treat, because this truck had soft serve ice cream treats. Like a “Dairy Queen” or “Tastee Freez” on wheels. The problem was that the soft serve was more expensive and I was unable to afford it, as were a lot of kids in my community. It was fun to see it, though, and aggravate the young people who could afford it. Ah, those were simpler days. We had little money, but found ways to enjoy our lives with friendship and creativity. Imagine being an ice cream truck driver and listening to the same song over and over, day after day, week after week. I’m guessing one would hear that song in your head no matter what you were doing, whether trying to sleep or showering. You would not be able to even enjoy your morning cup of coffee without that playing in your head. I am sure this was a reality for every ice cream truck driver of the day. While most local vendors blasted out some rendition of Turkey in the Straw or Farmer in the Dell, “Mister Softee” had a jingle written just for them in 1960 by a prolific jingle writer of the day, Lester Morton (Les) Waas. It was called, The Whistler and his Dog. It was written in E-flat major in a jaunty 6/8 time. The name, “Mister Softee” was developed in cooperation with an advertising agency. The crew there also designed the logo, which has not changed since the company’s inception. “Mister Softee” was founded by William Conway, and James Conway in Philadelphia in 1956. It is one of the largest franchisors of soft ice cream in the United States, with about 350 franchisees operating 600 trucks in 15 states. The concept of the ice cream truck started at least a century earlier, but in the early 1950’s people began coming to the brothers to buy ice cream machines to put into trucks. The Conways were working for Sweeden Freezer, the leading ice cream machine manufacturer at the time. Realizing that special mountings with shock absorbers needed to be designed to allow the machines to function properly in mobile conditions, they split off to launch their ice cream truck empire. This was not intended to be an article about any particular mobile ice cream novelty vendor. My intent was to remember the joy that these men and women brought to young boys and girls everywhere. Cruisin’ time is upon us. I am wishing you a great season.
