By: Jimbo “Traveling Coast to Coast
and all that’s in-between. Get in on the action and enjoy the ones you meet along the way. Join the Coast Cruizers Today” Rusty Hamilton It was great to see all the Coast Cruizers from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida who stopped by to visit at our hospitality tent during Cruisin the Coast. The word must be spreading about the Coast Cruizers, we’ve signed up people from as far away as North Carolina, Minnesota & Illinois. We will have our Hot Rod Alley hospitality tent set up at the Emerald Coast Cruizin, in Panama City Beach, Fla. Nov. 5-10. and everyone is welcome to stop by. By the time most of you are reading this months magazine our political situation should be settled for at least the next four years. Who ever is running the country now, I sure hope they bring the price of gas down. Somebody up there in Washington must know that there are a lot of us car clubs and cruizers who like to travel and spend our money along the way. I hate putting it all in the gas tank and packing sandwiches from home. But as long as I have gas in the tank, I’ll keep my foot on the throttle. For those of us who live here along the Gulf Coast just think how lucky we are to have two huge car events back to back. October’s Cruisin the Coast, and a couple weeks later the Emerald Coast Cruisin’. Thousands of cars & trucks, lot’s of people diggin’ the times, head bobbin’ finger poppin’ music, good times…. and then we get into the holiday spirit. And it starts all over again… the schedule of event just keeps getting bigger. More shows more cruise-ins. If you have a Cruizin machine and a little gas you’ll always have a place to meet up with others cruising around. Ok…… I’m getting off the soapbox now. You know with all this short term memory information the media keeps telling us older folks about, and how we should be prepared for what frustration it will cause us, it got me to thinkin’... I’m having trouble remembering the passwords I use to log into some of my computer programs now. So to be proactive---I think I’ll change my password to “incorrect” that way, when I log onto the computer with the wrong password, the computer will tell me… “Your password is incorrect” Till next month… Jimbo Jimbo, I own the 63 Corvette you put on your October cover. I just want to thank you and Tom for making that happen, it looks GREAT! That car has been special from the time it was finished over a year ago, has won several “Best of Shows” Most recently the Mississippi Corvette Classic in the Convention Center in Jackson, Class and Best Corvette at Super Chevy, a number of Class and Special awards at World of Wheels including the Championship Auto Shows, Inc (CASI) Cup, is currently #2 in points for 2013 World of Wheels and got a Builders Pick at the GoodGuys Nationals in Columbus, Ohio the day I took delivery in 2011. As you can tell I'm very proud of it and want to thank you for highlighting it on your cover and Tom and his committee for making it the feature car for Scarecrow 2012! Again, Thanks…………Gene Delcomyn

The Texas Longhorn Rod Run Jimbo, Nancy, Sharon and I left here on Sept 28th to go to Old Town Spring, Tx. We left here about 7am and went to Slidell, stopped at the Cracker Barrel and had breakfast. From there we stopped in Baton Rouge, La. Then on to Beaumont for ice cream at DQ. We left there and took a back road over to Conroe, Tx. We went through a town called Sour Lake, that is where Texaco Oil started and then on to Cut and Shoot, Tx. (They have the largest Harley Davidson club in the U. S, but the town only has about 1500 people.) We got into Old Town Spring, Tx about 5pm. The next morning we got ready to go eat and it was raining, but the weather wasn't real bad. It rained for 3 or 4 minutes and stop. Saturday there was only about thirty cars because of the weather. Nancy's daughter and family met us there and the women went shopping all day. Old Town is about 5 blocks by 6 blocks full of stores and shops. A lot of people come up from Houston to shop in the stores on the weekend. It is said that Bonnie and Clyde robbed the old bank in town in the 1930's. We were told that Clyde and his bunch shot up the building before going inside to rob it. The bullet marks are still on the brick. Jimbo and Nancy had to come home Sunday, Sharon and I stayed to go do some more shopping and see how many cars would show up. Sunday was a different story as for weather and cars. There were over 160 cars showed up and it has stopped raining. If the weather had been good, we were told that they have an average of five to seven hundred cars each year. We did get a few pictures of cars and the old bank building, (the Iron Horse Store)
Sharon and I hope to get a group together next year and make this trip again. Here is a web site about Old Town and the bank. www.hollowhill.com/old-town-spring J. R. www.CoastCruizers.com

By Ray Blouin I am the owner of “Blouin Motors Inc.”, a used vehicle dealership in Raceland La. I have been in business 18 years and love what I do. For years I have been thinking of a way to get the most for my advertising dollars. After much thought and prayer, I got an idea that would be radically different and quite costly. At the time, I thought it would be a “one time” project that would put “Blouin Motor”s on the map. I chose a 1997 Ford ranger extended cab truck and a 1993 ranger regular cab, welded back to back (pictured above). Once the two vehicles were chosen, the project was underway. I was very excited about the “Blouin Motors” new form of rolling advertisement that was being birthed. I was aware of the fact that this form of advertisement had been effective for years. A good example of this is, when you hear the company name GEICO, what is the first thought that comes to mind? Could it be a little green lizard? Ads have indeed programmed our minds over the years. My next step was to find someone with talent to bring this idea to reality. My life-long friend, Deedee Folse, and I talked about the project and design for a long time. Deedee recommended Randy Lory for the job, a local “Hot Rodder”, to help me get the job done. Randy got started by posting the build on the webb. Before we knew it, my rolling advertisement was buzzing. The number one comment was, “The owner of that truck mustn't know if he's coming or going”. I was certain this was to be the advertisement that would produce results. I was anxious to see the painted finished product, which entailed “Blouin Motor” decals all over the vehicle. While sitting in church one Sunday morning, I heard a message that was titled, “It's not about you”. As I left church, a little voice inside me (Holy Spirit) asked me, is it about “Blouin Motors” or is it about me? I was a “born again” Christian for 17 years and planned to put a fish emblem or some type of Jesus insignia on the truck. The main idea was to advertise my vehicle “sales” business. Over the next few days I did some serious praying. The final conclusion was that this vehicle would be made to glorify God, not man. I continued praying for new directions. The comments made on the webb kept going through my head. Finally, the answer came to me, through John 14:6, which states, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me.” This is how “one way” was birthed on the cross. There are so many people today looking for meaning or direction in their life. Knowing this is how “Need Direction” came about above the cross. The rear windshield needed writing in large bold letters in order for motorist to be made aware that this was the rear glass and not the front windshield of the truck facing them. While attending another church service, a prophetic word went forth stating, “Don't look back, move forward and leave your past behind.” God's spirit had His way with me again, thus the words, “Give your life to Jesus”. “Don't look back” was to cover the back windshield. Not being sure of how the colors would come together, I decided on white for the base. At this point, I got together with a couple of Christian friends and asked for prayer on how to incorporate all the ideas into one. A few weeks later a dear friend of mine, Norman Guilfou and my brother, Randy Blouin came up with the awesome design. In December 2010, Norman went to be with the Lord. I miss him very much and thank God for his input on this “God ordained” project. The art work was done by Hans Geist. What a God-given talent this man has to bring a picture into reality. Randy Lory came up with the name “God's Rod”. Randy told me most people build “Street Rods” or “Hot Rods”, but this truck is “God's Rod”. It was created to give glory to God and lead people to a personal relationship with Jesus. I can't say enough about the awesome job Randy did in bringing my vision to reality. Many comments have been made that if I went out in public with this truck people will think I am crazy. Let me clarify that now. I am crazy for Jesus and what He has done in my life! He is my Lord and Savior. He died for me and you in order that we would have eternal life with Him. I want to live my life giving Him the glory He is so deserving of. I pray for each one of you as you read this article and may be in need of direction in your life. I pray you would come to the point of realization that God is more than able to lead and direct you. There is only “one way” to Him. I pray you make the right choice for eternity. Questions or comments, you may reach me at (985) 637-8596. May God Bless You!

Wow! Feel that coolness in the air. Fall is finally here and the ever so brief, but great weather for car shows and cruise-ins is here. Spring and Fall on the Gulf Coast is really a special time, excellent cruising weather. We just finished up the 16th edition of Cruisin The Coast and it was bigger and better than ever with over 6,160 registered cars and thousands and thousands of more cool cars that just came for the party. The entire event grew as thousands more came to view the Hot Rods! That was evident with the huge crowds up and down Hwy 90 on the beach. Motorhomes, campers, pop-up tents and lawn chairs were standard affair. The economic impact to the Gulf Coast was amazing. Cruisin the Coast is the largest event on the Mississippi Gulf Coast bringing in millions and millions of dollars in tourism and retail sales. It was photo and camera heaven also...if I had to guess, I would bet that at least 3,000 photos were taken of my old T-Bucket during the week. At night you could just see all the flashbulbs going off as you creped by in the congested traffic. It is truly an event where your car is the star. There were two great new editions during the week. Well one is not new, but it came of age this year, that was View the Cruise Sunday in downtown Gulfport. The event started off as being a place to go after the Cruise-in at Hardy Court Shopping Center was over; now you have to get to downtown Gulfport around 7 am to get a good parking spot. Downtown Gulfport has been revitalized, with the charm of the downtown area and ample shade, this event has grown into a monster.

Downtown Biloxi, MS Wednesday’s Biloxi Block Party is still an awesome event, another one of those venues where you have to arrive at the break of dawn to claim your spot. Some cruisers get there at 4 am for the choice spots.

Downtown Gulfport, MS Gulfport, MS Also a high point for me and my wife Scotty this year was an invite to Gulf Coast Industries in Gulfport, a program of the Gulf Coast Mental Health Center that works with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The center trains their clients to do various jobs from letter folding and stuffing envelopes to Mardi Gras bead stringing, parts assembly, light manufacturing and more. All the clients working there earn a check for their work. The center held a Sock Hop for its clients, invited the Hot Rods and fed everyone. It was very impressive and heart warming at the same time.

This year a new unofficial event was the finale of the week of cruising. The event was sponsored by Edgewater Mall and Auto Zone on Saturday night, the Coast Cruizers Mega Cruize-In. It began at 5:30pm in Edgewater Mall’s west parking lot and lasted until about 9:30 pm. The place was packed with over 500 cool cars and people. Great 50’s and 60’s music blared from the loud speakers and $5 Mega 50/50 tickets were sold. The Coast Cruizers also gave out over $1,200 in door prizes. The Mega 50/50 winner was a lady from Georgia that pocketed $880. That event needs to be on the official Cruisin the Coast schedule for 2013, it was a blast and a very cool Edgewater Mall event. Emerald Coast Cruisin is coming up November 5-10 in Panama City, FL… 3,000 cars and a whole lot of fun if you have never been. It is one of the best Car Shows I’ve ever been to. I’m trying my best to clear my calendar to make it and you should also. It’s one car show that you’ll remember. My HOA thing has quieted down…hope it stays that way! I’ll keep you updated if it doesn’t. I am pooped from a week of cruising and great events that make you go for a whole week at 90 mph. Time for my recliner and a good football game to put me to sleep! Get that Hot Rod out of the garage, wipe the dust off of it, get out on the road and enjoy that 17 FOREVER…Hot Rod state of mind! Til next month…

The Matinee Rocker: By: DD Thunders. The fall movie release season has begun and its already rockin! Hollywood usually holds back there strongest dramas, thrillers etc. so they can be fresh on the minds of the academy award voting members. That means the best of the best comes down the line till the cutoff date for voting. They run the trailors for up to a half year before the fall release season. Movie hounds like me have been drooling over the previews for so long that I have been known to run through the theater parking lot to be first in line! God be with anyone who is in front of me at my local theater when I have "fall fever". The other day I pulled the plug on a elderly couples little rascal (you know, the battery powered wheelchairs/go-carts you get to ride in when your retired) and beat them in a desperate foot race to the ticket booth. Maybe I should order my tickets online so I don't get arrested while tossing grandmas cane while sprinting for the finish line! First up is the major release Argo. Screen play by Chris Terrio and directed by Ben Affleck. This movie is loaded with great actors and stars Ben Affleck, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Clea Duvall and many more good character actors that you might not recognize now, but I bet will be big in Tinsel Town soon. This screenplay was based on true events that happened in 1979 at the U. S. embassy in Tehran. I remember following this awful terrorist act when I was a teenager living in California pursuing a career in skateboarding. We watched the countdown of the hostage captivity everyday on TV. This event wasn't to far removed from the end of the Vietnam war when baby boomers, like me, watched Walter Conkrite count down the days of tragedy near the end of the Vietnam war. This was the first time something like this happened to the U.S.A. and it brought our country into the desperate grip of world terrorist activity. The movie was well done front to back. I really enjoy movies that are period pieces from my child hood/early adult days. Just as my father likes to watch world war two movies, I like to see what we looked like when I was young. They did a great job on the clothes, eyewear (remember those awful giant square framed glasses and the helmet haircut all the working stiffs wore in the late 70/80's). They were a little heavy handed on some aspects of life back then. Remember how everybody smoked inside before it was outlawed and smokers were sent to the desolate back parking lot. Things like this were focused on, a little heavy handed, but its fun to see how silly everybody looked in there 20's. I, personally am except from this fashion fauxpaw! I have been wearing the same clothes since I was old enough to choose between Levis or double knit flares. that's right, the DD Thunders uniform, Levi rigid 501's, plain black t-shirt, vans or chucks etc. (except‌. my stage wear. That is flashy retro western and hip lounge wear) sad but true folks.. The pace of and dialogue of the story move fast and furious. These people had to make life altering decisions under extreme pressure and this film portrayed the desperate circumstances the U.S. ambassadors faced. The plot is based around the decision to free these people from the terrorist take over by staging a fake Hollywood movie being shot on location in Tehran. The plan was to turn the 6 people who escaped the embassy building into a Canadian film crew and fly them home on a commercial flight. This window of opportunity for freedom was only a day or so. The rest of the embassy employees became the first U.S. hostages to be held in a world stage chess game that was becoming a death sentence. The six fast thinking U.S. escapees were being hidden at the Canadian embassy and were not sure that this plan would work. Ben Afflicts character Tony Mendez, a hostage extractor, came up with a plan so far from the normal escape plans he barely got the ok. The real hook of this story is how much trouble Afflicts character had trying too convince the government and the government employees/ hostages this would work. The characters of Alan Arkin and John Goodman added just enough comic relieve to keep the story moving

forward. They played two Hollywood producers who had a good time helping tony Mendez get a fake movie up and running in a town where lies, fake stories and make believe strive in real life. This movie is a must see and a true nail-biter ................. the final scenes were so tense I was actually biting my nails, not as tasty as my snowcaps but knowing this is a real life story about American heroes and our Canadian friends who put their lives on the line deserve to have there story told. I'm sure this movie will bring plenty of Academy gold home but the real heroes deserve the glory. I give this flick 9 out of 10 picks. Next up is another major release, Trouble with the Curve. Written by Randy Brown and directed by Robert Lorenz. It is a Clint Eastwood film that stars the "make my day" superstar, Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake. This story is about a legendary baseball scout that is near the end of his career and the daughter he raised on his own but neglected, while on the road doing his job of getting major baseball talents signed to the Atlanta Braves. His daughter, played by Amy Adams, raised herself and became an independent, successful lawyer. Being a baseball fan, player through high school and a short but sweet semi pro baseball all star career (1995-96), I was looking forward to a good baseball movie and I was not disappointed! This movie had two strikes against it before I even looked up show times at the Grand Theater in Diberville Ms. (shameless plug that gets me in for free, yeah!!) I never read any other movie critics but had heard this film was not worth seeing. The best thing about this particular release, was that I got to bring my father to see it. We haven't seen a movie together since I was 12 years old. Around that time, my mom and he would drop me off at the local theater for a matinee every Saturday. This is a family drama with enough grit to entertain young and old. This is a modern take on a very old story. One that goes back to the back as far as time itself.. the conflict between a father and his son but in this modern drama its a daughter trying to get close to a distant father who loves his daughter but has a hard time showing it. I have seen a few Eastwood movies of late where he plays the grumpy old guy fed up with the new world. Here is another one. Clint has been type cast in his golden years but he owns this character and takes it to the fence with a solid performance. Hey, don't get me wrong, I liked him in Grand Torino but his new "catch phrase, think, what you talkin about Willis or Mr., when he pities the fool) what I will title the EC grunt!! Every time he didn't like something in his former movie he would.....you get it. Somebody should have made a grunt count and intervened. I only think he slipped one grunt in this release. Amy Adams is a actor on the way to the top. She owned her character, a salty and intelligent woman who could hold her own in the male dominated world of business law. Another John Goodman solid performance and has a role of close friend to Eastwoods Menez character who has his 6. I knew there would be plenty of how do you work this damn internet thing and how do you make a call on this dang smart phone etc. but they really focus on the core story of father/daughter conflict, love and approval. Justin Timberlake character had him playing a light hearted supporting role as a young scout who had played in the show but didn't make it very long. You know he is going to try and hang with Amy Adams (I sure would!! call me!!!) Justin is a talented actor, musician and is a new breed of triple threat (sings, dances, acts) and does a pretty decent job of showing a side of professional sports you don't see them talk about on ESPN too much‌. what to do with yourself, after your ride in the majors, stops! This movie has the usual Hollywood story and the ending didn't stray from a successful formula they have used for years. It would be easy to be a snob and take a shot at this wide release but I enjoyed it and give it 7 out of 10 pics ! Last on my monthly movie review trilogy is The Master. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Laura Dern and a large cast of competent actors who help tell this twisted little story. I was real excited about seeing this movie. I love dramas and the main actors are favorites of mine. That is where the fun stops. This was one creepy, uneven torrid tale of a sudo-religous con-man godhead who makes a good living taking money from his wealthy and
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
loyal following, while living a decadent lifestyle of deceit and debauchery. Sure that sounds like a bunch of fun but.............. Joquim's character was a study in white trash, hardcore deviant who made the theater crowd uneasy and confused. He kind of looked like his Johnny Cash style character. Maybe a very distant, slightly inbreed crazy ass cousin. He is an out of luck ex-Navy grunt who falls into a friendship/fall guy, to Hoffman's cultish high society, intellectual group.— who I think might have been styled after a certain cult/religion that is very popular with the current Hollywood hipsters. Joaquin's only saving grace is that he is a pretty decent moonshiner who keeps his new boss (Hoffman) drunk and disorderly while he is a stowaway on the borrowed yatch/think tank. Mr. Phenix's portrayal of this low brow is so real and just so creepy, it made my skin crawl. I'm not sure if that is good acting or just seeing what you can get away with. The new lifestyle/religious mandate that Hoffman's character has made for himself has his wife, played by Amy Adams, turning her beautiful cheek while he has his way with wealthy ladies pocketbooks and young women's, well, you get the picture. A bunch of this film was experimental and reminded me of a late 60's early 70's gonzo style of movie making. The editing was a bit uneven and the script was hard to follow and seemed to get dragged along by a bunch outrageous scenarios that left me uneasy and begging for the credits to roll ! The most disturbing part of this manic flick was a group orgy scene that was maybe just a dream or maybe it was....uh, it featured most of the female cast in full frontal birth day suits. You might be thinking, Amy Adams nude is a good thing and yes it is. She was eight months pregnant, while most of the nude cast was, well, how to put it...warts and all. No, that sounds really bad. Remember the nude ghost lady in the Shining that drifted towards Jack Nicolson? None of the ladies in the buff were dead flesh rotting zombies, but a couple were a little to natural looking, nuff said. It was a big disappointment and a funny thing happened when I was leaving the screening. A local newscaster/celebrity who I have meet a few times over the years, being a musician, saw me coming down the isle heading for the warm glow of the exit sign. When I got close, we both looked at each other with the same uneasy look on our face. I looked around as she also did and nothing was said. It’s like when kidnapped people feel for their captors or a group of people that just watched a disaster and the results are burned in our brains. Like I said, we looked each other in the face and said nothing as we slipped out the in-door. I give this opus 4 out of ten pics. I have had a bunch of people responding to my articles lately. Send me a request, comment or just make fun of my stage name at ddthunders100@yahoo.com. By popular demand, I’m gonna’ slip in some of my favorite movies that have watched more than 100 times or so. You might be surprised at what type of movie I enjoy. Just because I’m a tattoo covered rocker who rides his Harley solo, lives a alternative lifestyle, and keep vampires hours... maybe I will do my 10 favorite chick flicks first. Well, let me wrap this months reviews. Don't forget to support your local theaters, just remember to turn your phone off when you sit down in your local theater and never get caught sneaking in candy!! ON TOP RACING -ON TOP RACING team: 1982 Mercury Capri RS: Jody Beckford, driver/owner… Randy Rush, crew chief…Larry Murray, driver of 1982 Mustang We all got hooked up in the late 80's, early 90's. Both cars competed in many weekend events and main events since 1991. Oh yes, there were two cars but now only one, the Capri. Jody used to run a bad ***306 in the early days. I can't remember the numbers right now but the car was very potent and torkie. He now runs a 358 Winsor which runs 11:56 (in his best) at approximately 114 mph & 300 hp. We started running points chase in 1998. We had a couple of Top Ten finishes at Fun Ford events in 2000 at Norwalk Raceway Park. This was a national event with over 200 cars per class. Jody and I also had a season championship win at NRP K&N Street Eliminator in 2002. Consistent numbers led OTR to a 3 to 4 hundredth of a second window for our dial ins during eliminations. More often than not, OTR was paired again the top 10 in the points chase. This proved to make the team better and stronger in pulling our resources together to get the job done. Oh yes, there were 3 cars running about this time in 2003 which required us to be very busy maintaing cars (fluid and oil changes, fuel, proper air pressures and appearance). Larry and I made an appearance with the Mustang at his old stomping grounds at the Halloween Hoot held in Jefferson County fairgrounds in Steubenville, Ohio, 2003. There was a 150 car count and we took a 2nd place finish. Believe me, it is very hard to race somewhere else when you are the "new guys." I think they thought we were cheating! ON TOP RACING has also done various charity events such as the RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE, MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION, to name a few. We have been at some cancer fund raising events also. I am a cancer survivor and am very blessed to have been able to learn and work with OTR in the past years and am looking forward to more in the future. When Jody was getting ready to move to Florida, I got to do a little more on my own. I did several racing events. and car shows. During this time, I was getting out in the public eye and racing to keep OTR's name and sponsor out there. Thanks to Auto Zone #1969 in Bowling Green, Ohio. Jody now lives in Youngsville, La. where he recently did the Jackie Miller Benefit Show. Jody and Victoria Beckford arrived with their two children Nick and Holley, and a 1982 Mercury Capri drag car. This bad boy boasts a 351 Windsor engine with world product headers, Windsor heads, a Weiand stealth intake with a 700 Holly carburetor and so much more than I can list! This car has been shown on the popular show "Pinks all out" three different times. Jody discovered it in the woods in November of 1998, in northwest Ohio. After negotiations, he purchased the Capri for a whopping six-hundred bucks! After he brought it home he decided to make it legal for the drag strip because he was tired of the "red and blues" following him. I think that’s a good reason, don't you folks? ….. He had a 1st place finish several years ago at the Mardi Gras Race at No Problem Raceway. We also did a Pinks All Out show there. Jody, his wife, Victoria and children and I did OTR's 3rd Pinks All Out in Houston, Texas. which was our last stop in 2010. I have heard through the grapevine that some changes are coming soon to our stable! The Capri will be getting a transplant-- a Ford Stroker motor which should put us in the 9 to 10 second category. This will get our numbers down and make us more competitive. We will have to wait and see. Wheels up! Coming to a town near you in 2013? 14

Ellie makes a face for breast cancer “My friend Toni of almost 30 yrs (who painted my car the first time) was diagnosed with breast cancer this year. So since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I knew I wanted to dedicate it to her and every woman who is fighting this horrible disease.” Carolyn said. “Even though she was taking her chemo every week and had good days and bad days, she has never let it slow her down. I told her my idea of what I wanted to do and she thought it was a great idea. She mixed up just the right shade of pink and added lots of pearl so it would shine. Together we came up with the just the right decals to finish the car off. Going to car shows and cruise-ins are always lots of fun but now I'm taking it more serious and want to get the message out.” This is for you Toni. ‘Fight like a Girl’
“CANCER IS YUKEEE”
As most of you know, October is breast cancer awareness month. Lady Cruizer Carolyn Charles from Vancleave, MS drives this message home everywhere she goes. Everyone that goes to car shows and cruise-ins here on the MS Coast, has seen Carolyns’ 1965 Mustang. Painted pink for the last few years, this year this little pony was due for a repaint and Carolyn wanted to do something different. Now there is more to this story than meets the eye.

by: Lynn Makua Well, I stumbled out of bed at 5 a.m. and made my way to the laundry room to feed “Easy” my ½ Siamese Cat. She was obediently following me at my heels. She has a “feeding tower” that's about 8” high and has a 4” X 4” plate connected to it. The tower has to be filled every three days or so. So - you think animals are dumb? I pour the new food in the top always, before it runs out at the bottom. So she immediately starts eating out of the top! Never mind the food from 2 days ago that is in the plate. My solution was to make a top cover out of aluminum foil and presto! She eats out of the plate! I bet you readers love me sharing this with you! Oh well “Easy” does love spam (no rice or egg). A week or two ago I jumped in precious (my 300ZX) turn on my tape of Michael Bolton ( I bet y'all thought I was going to play my Hawaiian singer Don Ho). That reminds me of Hawaii: I usually talk about my beach boys. This time I was thinking of two of my favorite guys. (see the photo) Left Ben Chapman, me, Carol, Norm Bishop and Pineapples Husband. This is when we were living in a condo (Foster Towers) over looking Waikiki Beach. You remember the monster movie CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON it came out in 1954. Benny was the creature. Benny was the last Universal Studios Horror Monster alive before he died on Feb 21, 2008. He was a contract player with the studios & stuntman. He was a Tahiti Native 6' 5”. He was 25 years old when he did the movie. I ask him how he got the part. He said they were looking for a big guy who would fit the suit, swim and be able to hold their breath, so he got the part. Benny could hold his breath for 3 or 4 minutes. He said they wanted the monster to be taller so he had to wear lifts so he could be 7 ft. The hardest was when he had to swim underwater on his back following Julie Adams as she was swimming. He joined the Marines after the movie. (Korean War) He came back, moved to Hawaii, and was a Honolulu Real Estate Executive. Benny appeared at many conventions up to his death. He had a lot of fun talking with his fans and signing autographs. ALOHA Benny! Now I get to tell you about Norm Bishop. He was Larry's best friend in Santa Monica, Ca. We used to live on the 16 floor of the Santa Monica Shores Tower over looking Santa Monica Beach and his bar “The Main Sail”. Norm was a Stunt Director - Stuntman. If you saw the movie RIVER OF NO RETURN with Marilyn Monroe & Bob Mitchum, Norm was directing the water scenes, Marilyn Monroe was wearing hip boots, she fell of the raft, the boots filled with water, and down she went! Norm dove down and got her, pulled her and her hip boots and water over to shore. She passed out and came to right away. She and Norm dated for about a year after that. I better mention that Norm doubled Lloyd Bridges in all the underwater scenes in SEA HUNT the TV series. Back to Mississippi: I drive to Lakeshore Blvd and Lower Bay Rd. Much to my chagrin, Selliers II bar and restaurant was closed! Well, next month perhaps we will have news about it. There is a rumor that Pizza and Beer might be moving in. Crickets is open, Thurs,Fri., & Sat. as always , it is the place for action! Haven't seen Debbie's car in front of Anita's lately. I always watch for the bartender's car before going in. She makes my Hawaiian Sunset perfect and so does Pat at Rickeys as you leave Anita's and head for the bridge its behind Burger King in the center. They are both tied for 1st in my contest for the best Hawaiian Sunset!

In case you have friends or relatives coming to town, Jim Mitchell has the Red Rooster Resort up for sale. (see his ad) Call me for more info if you need it. I stopped at Nate's Bar on 49 in Gulfport (see his ad) up by Sonic Drive In and across from “Big Mac” McDonalds. You will like the 2 for 1 from 1p.m.-7p.m. well or draft, and be sure and tell them you read it in “MotorSports”. They have a great steak and eggs! (any time) On my way back down 49 I stopped at “Tiffin Room “at 809 34th St. Its down a block from “Headliners Plus” see both ads this issue. Tiffin Room has NFL-NASCAR and a great juke box! The champagne splits are very popular, and happy hour cocktails are extremely good! Thelma, & Kim are day bartenders and Jan is the owner. See ad this issue. I stopped at Traxs Bar & Grill on Railroad Ave. in Long Beach, Jim & Frank have it up for sale, and it's a great place, huge TV'S large outside patio and darts and pool leagues. Wonder of wonders, “Pineapples Husband” as Debbie of “Anita's calls him (he likes Larry best) Actually took Precious out in back to the cement slab that used to be a double garage before Katrina. He jacked her up, all 4 wheels, put stands under her and rolled underneath!! About 3 hours later he pronounced it fixed!!! The three hours included a trip to Auto Zone (BSL) to see Becky and Eric for parts and latest car gossip!! Now that he worked on Precious, I guess I better be on Good Behavior (that's not a problem is it girls!) There is a rumor that a 1940 Chev is on its way to us from Tulsa, OK. (rust bucket, doesn't run). I bet that's why precious got fixed $$$ (no B&K this time) Since I was going to Dempsey's (see their ad) and drop off some magazines and say hi to Diane (the owner) and have a glass of wine. I told you know who I would like to take Precious on test drive. He said I will go with you! So, off we go! We had a glass of wine and Diane told
me she has opened a gift shop next to Dempsey's. She calls it Swamp Shack. I can't believe in the Kiln? They are open Tues-Sat 11-8 and Sunday 10-3. It's a great shop! They have an artist by the name of Silva Carbon, who I just loved. Also Hand painted slates by Cindy Kieffer. You gals will love this gift shop. Their phone 228-255-2028. Cruising The Coast was great. I dropped by El Maguey's in Bay St. Louis and Juan (the owner) was a happy camper. He had quite a few cruisers stop by. (see his ad) Lacy the bartender at the VFW in Bay St. Louis said she went to El Maguey's for lunch and loved it. She said the frozen Margarita's were great! Jim Mitchells friend Pee-wee came down from Vermont, he wanted Margarita's so, we sent him to El Maguey's He is bragging all over Vermont about them. That reminds me, I was at the VFW (see their ad) and Mike was in charge! Cruising The Coast was on and Bobby was busy! Mike was not a happy camper. He just likes to supervise and drink his beer. I think he had to cook on Friday! I'm sure he would rather be on has famous riding mower cutting Lacy's grass and trying to kill any snake that gets in has way. I then decided to go to the Cruise in on Main St/Second St. in Bay St Louis. I think I gave out over a hundred magazines. Sloppy Dogs was very busy. Julius the owner was working and was very happy. (see his ad) Ugly Pirate was also doing great! News Flash: C J 'S Grocery-Deli and Anita's Bar in Bay St. Louis were robbed and set on fire. I think the fire was started at C J'S and spread to Anita's . Debbie (Anita's Bar) said they hoped to open on Monday Oct 22 - more info next month. Watch next month for some of my old and new places! down the tube. Did you know Ford produced a liberator 4 engine bomber during WWII every hour! This was at the Willow Run Plan, and it took 100,000 parts for each plane. - Plant was ½ mile long with 90,000 employees.
by: Larry Dunham Some are in wheel chairs, many are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them. I'm going to reminisce a bit, because these are memories, dirt track and happenings, before, after, and during the “good old days”. You walk into a bar, see a “darlin child” sitting alone. You slide into the bar stool next to her, and say “buy you a drink?” She looks back at you and says “maybe 2 or 3 - Let the games begin! (as they said in the days of Ancient Rome). I'm the “Apostle of Possibility”, and that includes when they say “you fool around anymore? Look back and say “I was never fooling!”. I've told you about Ray Van Dorn, drag racer and Bonneville salt flats racer. We were pals since the 8th grade, enlisted together, and did our thing in WWII. So, starting in 1979 Pineapple and I went to see Ray every father's day and take in the SCCA- Trans AM races in Portland, Oregon. We watched Paul Newman win the C Class championship one day, and he also won many other races. In 1979 Paul finished 2nd in the 24 hour s of Le Mans in a Porsche. In 1995 24 hours of Daytona at age 70 he won his class and was the oldest driver ever to win the event. Budweiser sponsored him, but he refused to take any money, just beer as needed. For you NASCAR fans Paul owned a Winston Cup Car in 2007 and it was the #12 Dodge driven by Ryan Newman he sold it to Rodger Penske. At Portland he was “stalked” by “Pineapple” with her camera, but she was always staying about 30 feet away, he finally noticed her, stopped, and posed, and said “did you get it ok honey? Everyone gave him his privacy in the pits. He was born 26 January 1925, died 26 Sept. 2008. He completed in a stock car race when 83 years old for someone (I don't know who, or where, but he refused to drive unless it had #83 on the side, and it was his last race.) The midgets are a dying breed, this picture was taken at Southern Calif. race track (dirt oval) that “Aggie” (J.C. Agajanian) took out a portion of the fence and made a road course on the empty field next to the track. The start and finish line stayed the same but he “took out” the fence in the banked 1st turn! This photo shows Troy Ruttman getting “airborne” going over the high bank in turn 1 and landing on the “road course” in the field! You can see the fence on the front straight as you look under the car. A year or so I mentioned Roger Ward who took a midget to Lime Rock Connecticut in 1949 and entered it in the road race there for Sports Cars. The sports car guys laughed at the midget, little tiny 4 cylinder engine, no transmission, and no room in the car! It was identical to the one pictured here but painted white. Roger won it and lapped ½ the field. The average midget weight 800 to 900 lbs., wheels base 62” minimum, put out 130 to 150 hp (dependent on what fuel) On a ¼ mile banked dirt (most tracks) if you were quick, you got to about 80-90 at the end of the chute (straightaway) and come out of the corner (turn) at 60-70 mph - The only straight speed on record for midgets that I know of, was set at Bonneville salt flats by Danny Oaks at 143 mph. (When we ran mile tracks like Milwaukee, paved) you knew when you were going over a 100 mph, because the leather helmet chin straps would blow out from your ears. My good friend Rod Shapel of Streamliner fame, made up drawings for me to run the flat-head V-8-60 at Bonneville. I had the body molds ½ done, (nose, fenders and cowl) but a divorce came along and that project went

THE SON OF MAN GOES FORTH TO WAR, A GOLDEN CROWN TO GAIN, HIS BLOOD RED BANNER STREAMS AFAR, WHO FOLLOWS IN HIS TRAIN?
OK, girls you have been real patient, scanning the first of the article till you get to this part. I'm in my brand-new 1956 Ford Station wagon with my Kurtis Kraft V8-60 flat head midget on the trailer, hooked on the back bumper. Don Edmunds, Harold Miller Edgar Elder and I are on the crew of “41” car entered in the Indianapolis 500 mile race for 1956 (see photo) . It's the middle of May, and AAA books a race for midgets at Kokomo, Ind. Harold Miller & I (Harold built many flat heads that set records at Bonneville) hooked up the midget on back and away I went for Kokomo! It was about 80 miles north on Hi Way 31, and I stopped at the 1st town, (Carmel) to gas up. The kid comes running out of the station office to gas me up, (no serve your self in those days). So I went in to pay (cash) and here sets this “Darlin Child” behind the counter. She looks out at the race car on the back trailer, and says “you drive that?” “Sure do” say I. “Do you go to the races? “Every time my brother takes me”, she replied. “Why don't you call him and I'll leave stand passes at the gate for you & him”. I offered “I don't have to call him, he is putting gas in your car right now”, laughing as she spoke. I go out to the kid and ask him if he would “like to work as helper in the pits”. He looked astonished and said what time? 6 p.m. I told him. Then I went back in to her and said, “its great, but after the race how do we get away?” She laughed, “my best friend is his steady so we won't see them after the race. I didn't do too well that nite 5th in the slow heat for the main, and 8th in the main. Wrong gears and I was being careful because the 3 races in one nite for midgets was coming up, at 16th St. Speedway and I was 2000 miles from home, and a garage. After the race, Leah, (she sure looked good in those white shorts and button down the front blouse) slid in beside, me gives me a big smile and a warm long kiss!!! Now you don't have to be a genius to know things are going to be fine! I had $65.00 in my pocket for the nites work, gasoline was 29 cents a gallon and motel 6 was $6.50. So we stopped at the 1st motel 6 and in we went. I jumped in the shower, and was soaping down when I felt two soft hands on my shoulders and she turned me around. There she was, about 5' 3”, 36-24-34 and pulling me in for another kiss. “Lets go lay down “she murmured, and on the way to the bed I flipped on the radio. Jo Stafford was singing “Candy” with Johnny Mercer. “Why the radio?” she asked”. In case the walls are thin and they make to much noise in the next unit.” I replied. I planted a big kiss on her as Jo Stafford was singing “I want a Sunday Kind of Love”, (the race was on Saturday Nite) I made quite a few trips to Carmal during the rest of May, it was getting a little too serious, and I had much to do in Los Angels. (but that's another story) The songs by Jo were from 1955 Album called “Stafford Sentimental”. She had her own radio show (program). She was told by a Vet returning from the So Pacific that the Japs played her record on loud speakers to make US Troops homesick. “You Belong to Me” was #1 hit in USA, and also #1 England (UK). 1ST female singer to be #1 in the (UK) (see photo). MAY NO BAD DREAMS DESTURB YOUR REST, NOR THE POWERS OF DARKNESS OF YOU, MOLEST.

The family that races together… have a lot of fun and friendly competition. Meet Allan Kilpatrick, of Saucier, and his son Jason, who is a SSG with the 1108 TASMG. A few years ago, Allan’s brother, James, bought a 1982 Chevy S-10 that was already set up for drag racing. They took it to the drag strip a couple of times and when James decided he didn’t want to fool with it, he gave the truck to Allan who, in turn gave it to his son, Jason. They changed the motor and added a few things. While they were working on it, they started joking with each other about Allan building one and someday racing for pinks. After taking the truck to the track a few times, Allan decided that he did want one. Jason deployed to Afghanistan in September 2011 and while he was gone, his Dad finished Jason’s truck and started building his own. Allan got his S-10 from his older brother in Alabama. He gutted it out and built the roll cage and rear end for it. He put a motor and transmission in it and finally got it ready for racing. When it was time to paint their trucks, they had to decide on what colors to use. Jason’s daughter, Abby, wanted his truck to be lime green since that is her favorite color so he decided on lime green and black. Since they had some paint left over, Allan decided to paint his truck the same colors, but flip-flopped. Jason’s truck has a black front end and a lime green rear end. Allan’s has a lime green front end with a black rear end. Allan says they get a lot of stares and comments about their trucks. Both of their trucks have Chevy 350 small blocks with Powerglide transmissions and Ford 9 inch rear ends. When they had to decide on numbers for their trucks, Allan chose T4253, which is his wife, Teresa’s birthdate, April 2, 1953. Jason chose J4949 which was the birthdate for his Uncle James who originally owned the truck. James passed away from lung cancer in 2009. In the future, Jason wants to get the Construction Battalion Seabee painted on the bed cover of his truck with “In Memory of James Kilpatrick.” His Uncle James served two tours in Viet Nam with the 121st Construction Battalion of Gulfport, MS. Allan and Jason have a lot of support from their families. Allan’s oldest son, Danny is their assistant mechanic and pit crew chief. Danny’s son, Mason and Jason’s brother-in-law, Michael Weldon, are members of their pit crew. Allan’s wife, Teresa, and Jason’s wife, Racheal, provide a lot of moral and financial support. According to Allan, “It’s one big family project.” Allan and Jason both say they are very competitive, but they also race for the fun of it. They both say that one day; they WILL race for pinks, if they don’t wear out their trucks before then. Allan and Jason’s friends at Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine and Gulfport Dragway want to take this opportunity to thank Jason for his service. If you would like to know more about Allan and Jason and their trucks, come out to Gulfport Dragway sometime and talk to them. Like most car guys/racers, they love to talk about their toys.

There’s a new dog in town and owner Julius Landry says it’s the best dog in the world! The dog is of course Sloppy Dogs on North Second Street in Bay St. Louis, an eatery offering a new dimension in gourmet hot dogs on the Gulf Coast. Few restaurants even offer a good hot dog anymore, but the American classic is reaching new heights at this hot spot featuring quality ingredients, an innovative menu and a friendly environment. The heart of this new dog is an all-beef, natural casing hot dog that is plainly superior to any commercially available hot dog on the Coast. The proof is in the tasting and this dog won’t let you down. The flavor is assertive, the texture firm and its big enough to fill the bun as it should. The menu, just like the establishment, is diminutive. The building comes in at just about 164 square feet, not including patio with its umbrella topped tables outside. But small as the menu is it packs a powerful punch with a great selection of hot dog and sandwich specialties. The Original Sloppy Dog comes in three
Expires 11/31/12
sizes and is loaded with chili, cheese, onions and mustard. If you missed the fact that this place is called the Sloppy dog a couple of bits into this dog, and a hand full of napkins later and you’ll know why. It’s big, it’s messy and it is great. Get the large size for only seven dollars, it’s called the Bay Dog, and you’ve got a meal two could enjoy. Another standout is the Chicago Dog, an authentic recreation of one of the most famous hot dogs in the world. This hot dog lover’s favorite is stacked with sport peppers, a relish that you will take notice of, tomato wedges, onions, mustard, crunchy pickles and celery salt; order extra napkins with this one too. All of the eleven hot dogs on the menu look great, some are pretty simple like the Polish Dog that comes plain, or any way you like it, but others like the Pizza Dog and the Slaw dog are imaginative combinations that beg to be tried. But a visit to The Sloppy Dog would not be complete without sampling some of the non-dog offerings. The Philly Cheesesteak brings the house down and the Fish Tacos, a new arrival on the Coast, is a winner with three tacos served on garlic buttered tortillas for just six dollars; add cheese if you’re feeling heady and really hungry. There are also healthy fries, Zapps Kettle Cooked Chips and, unbelievably, thirty three kinds of beer available. The Sloppy Dog is also the only place on the Coast that serves Abita Root Beer on tap. The food is good, the portions are generous and the prices are right, so who could ask for more? Well owner Julius Landry closes the deal by making sure The Sloppy Dog is a family friendly, even dog friendly place (look for the food and water bowls outside), where his enthusiasm for his customers, his food and his new home of Bay St Louis is hard to miss. This is a great place for a quick meal on the run, a leisurely dog on your day off or a Sunday get together with friends. As Seen In See South Mississippi’s Newcomers & Visitors Guide

It's All In This Family As I see classic vehicles driving around town it reminds me of my youth and how I could identify every single make and model of car in the 40's,50's and 60's. The vehicles could be easily distinguished by their grilles and taillights. The bodies changed yearly. We knew all the engine sizes available from the different manufacturers spanning the decades. This is not the case with the current cars‌at least for me. This brief history will hopefully bring back some fond memories. In the 19th century, it was common for families to start businesses together. There were natural advantages, at least in those families in which siblings got along well, including an element of trust, a pooling of resources and an acceptance of the ups and downs of business life. The Studebaker brothers of South Bend, Indiana exemplified such an arrangement. Five of them founded the most successful wagon building company in the United States, and that firm became a leading automobile manufacturer. In 1852, the two oldest brothersClem and Henry-started a small wagon construction shop in South Bend. Just as they were running short of money, brother John M. offered $7,000.00 in profit from the California Gold Rush, and the partnership expanded. During the Civil War the brothers won a contract to provide wagons for the U.S. Army, and laid the foundation for a reputation of well-built vehicles. A fourth brother, Peter, was a natural salesman. He moved to St. Joseph, MO., the gateway to the Oregon Trail. The Studebaker Manufacturing Co. was soon supplying thousands of wagons to settlers crossing the plains and mountains of the west. Jacob, the youngest, helped the company develop a successful buggy-making trade. By 1900, the company had built one million wagons and buggies and employed more than 2,500 men and women in its South Bend factory. Clem, the president, was a close friend of Indiana's only president, Benjamin Harrison. He supported Harrison's successful candidacy in 1888, and the president-elect purchased five Studebaker carriages. Soon afterward, Clem Studebaker completed a palatial mansion, Tippecanoe Place, on West Washington Street in South Bend, Indiana. Designed in the Romanesque style by noted Chicago architect Henry Ives Cobb, the home commanded attention with its turrets, stone arches and granite exterior. Clem and his wife Ann contributed most of the funds needed to build an imposing English Gothic structure for St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church in 1900. Clem died in 1901, John, the last remaining brother, assumed the presidency of the company. The new century brought experimentation with building first electric, then gasoline automobiles. In 1910, John's son-in-law, Frederick Fish, reorganized the firm as a modern corporation and committed it to building automobiles. After World War I, Studebaker built new factories, and by 1927 it was turning out more than 270,000 cars per year. The next 40 years brought downturns and revivals, as Studebaker strove to maintain its status as the fourth largest American automaker. Popular models included the Commander, Champion, and the Lark. The Lark did well as compact after

introduction in 1959 until the “Big Three caught up. Famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy created streamlined and eye-catching looks. Studebaker had an enviable reputation for quality and reliability. Studebaker, however, couldn't compete with the much larger firms in Detroit and went out of business on March 16, 1966. There's still much to see and experience of the Studebaker era in South Bend. Some of the best vehicles the company made can be seen at the Studebaker National Museum. Tippecanoe Place now houses a fully restored restaurant. St. Paul's United Methodist Church continues to meet

in its Gothic building. Inside are stained glass windows crafted by Mayer & Co. of Munich. On Main and Lafayette streets, the 1906 administration building and the 1923 body assembly structure await new uses. Whenever I get gasoline, I'm at the grocery, or have my 1946 streetrod at a gathering, I watch faces light up as I am told stories from the past that feature someone's car. It happens to you with your classic car as well. I am proud to be a part of this hobby that brings so much joy to so many people. There are many museums around the country dedicated to preserving the memory of the automobile. We have to make sure they survive to tell the story to future generations that might tend to think that all cars look alike. Detroit: Cars and rock 'n' roll. Not a bad combo. Kid Rock. By: J Roberts I decided to tell about some restaurants we ate at while on vacation. First about the vacation. We spent a week at Disney World and we use the dinning plan for meals. If you do this it can save you money for food. Our plan had 1 quick meal, 2 snacks and 1 table service everyday for each person. Some restaurants called for 2 table services per person, other just called for 1. We used the quick meal for breakfast then the snack in the afternoon. We ate at the Hollywood and Vine which was a buffet style ( it was a 1 table service per person) restaurant at the Hollywood Studios. They had everything you could want, shrimp, salmon, chicken, beef, pork and a dozen different vegetables and that many salads. Then there was the deserts bar which was better than some of our casinos. One place was at the boardwalk resort which has stores, shops, bars, bakery and restaurants. The Big River restaurant has a brewery inside with 6 different types of beer. If you go there try the meat loaf. You will get 3 slices that must be a half pound or more with real mashed potatoes and gravy plus a vegetable. We paid for this one so we could save a table meal for one of the other restaurant. The price was real cheap for a meal at Disney World. Now for the best 2 that we ate at. They both called for 2 tables meals per person, but they were worth it. The first was in Epcot at the Canadian show case and was called the Le Cellier. You have to try the bone-in rib eye. The meat is brought in from Canadian according to our waiter. The rib eye is 18 to 20 oz and the bone may be 2 oz but I don't think mine was. This piece of meat looks like a huge lamb chop. It was cooked perfect at medium rare, charred on the outside and red inside which gave it a great taste. (I would have sucked the bone if I had been at home.) You also got sides and 3 types of bread. It was the best rib eye I have ever had. If I get to go back I will defiantly eat there again. The second place was at the Grand Floridian resort. A place called Narcoossee. It sets on the water looking at Magic Kingdom. Make your reservations so you can see the fireworks at night and ask for a window seat. They turn the light down low and pipe in the music form Magic Kingdom. Food, try the filet minion and lobster tail. It is fabulous with a white or red wine and you might need to get a to go box but you won't, because you will stuff yourself because it is so good. Another great dish is to order from the appetizer list, get the fried oysters and clams. If you go to Disney World and want to try any of the great restaurants make your reservation ahead of time. Some of the restaurants fill up fast. If you don't get a reservation the first time keep trying because they do have cancellation. Do you know where these vehicles are located at Disney World?

By: Denise “Neecy” Cobb dcob2107@yahoo.com
There's some gris-gris on dat truck! My column is titled "Neecy's Candids" because I enjoy going to car shows, and taking random photos of people and their rides. Occasionally, I also love to plan private shoots with interesting people and their unique vehicles. James's story is one of them: James McDonald bought his first truck only one day before his first son was born in 1986. A coworker told him about a 1949 Chevrolet pickup truck that his father used as a farm truck. He was interested in it so he decided to go and check it out. He really liked it and purchased it from the farmer. James took several years to build his dream truck, buying five donor trucks in the process. One donor truck was found in Washington, Louisiana. He was traveling down the highway and saw just a bit of the truck amongst some trees. He turned around and went to investigate. The truck belonged to a woman's ex husband and she told James that she didn't want to sell it, and she was going to have it restored herself. James waited about six months and saw the truck still in the same place as before and asked the woman if she wanted to sell it. Again, she refused. He waited even longer and tried again. When he spoke to her that time he told her that its been too long, and she would never fix it up, so she should sell it to him. She finally relented and sold the truck to him. Finally the day came to go for a ride in his newly built truck. The same day he put insurance on it, he asked his wife if she would like to go for a ride. As they were rolling, he turned to his wife and said “you see that dust devil over there?” Well, it wasn't merely just a dust devil, it was a tornado and it came down right were they were and damaged his truck! After that episode, James had to start the build all over again. A discouraged James let the '49 sit for six more years until finally he decided to put it back on the road. Several other crazy things happened while he and his wife were working on the truck, so they decided to
38
November 2012

name the truck “Voodoo Chile” after the Jimi Hendrix song. (Not voodoo chili people!) He decided that the truck had gris-gris on it, so what a perfect name for it. (gris-gris is thought to be a symbol of black magic and ill fortune) He also added a guardian bell on the rear of the truck to help ward off evil spirits. James customized the '49 and added a 350 engine with a 650 Edelbrock carb with an air gap intake to it. The truck was custom painted by Jim Jolley of Lafayette, Louisiana and the custom interior was done by John Knight of "On-the-go Auto from Youngsville, Louisiana. James's red 1951 Chevy deluxe pickup was his second endeavor. It is a five window cab, with a 235 thriftmaster engine, a four speed and highway gears. This was an unexpected buy. A friend of his bought the truck first from a man from Oregon. The truck had a “house” on the bed and the seller told the friend that he had to buy the “house” and the truck together. Later, James went to see his friend's truck for reference because he was still in the process of building his first truck. The friend asked James if he wanted to buy the truck. James thought of his dad and asked his dad if he was interested. His dad didn't want the project, so James decided he would buy it. The truck was wrecked so he fixed it up and put it on the road. Seeing it on the road looking nice, James's Dad changed his mind and bought it. After driving the truck for nine years, James's Dad sold it to a friend who kept it for two years. One day James was going down the road and saw it for sale again. It made James ill to see the truck out on the road for sale after having it in his family for so long, so he decided to buy it back. Instead of using cash to buy it, the man selling it needed paint work done, so they decided to trade work for the truck. It took James two years, painting three homes and a camp for it. It was finally back in the family after that and he has had it ever since. When I asked James what his next project would be he replied, "I would like ta build a sooped up short bus, dat sells tacos out da back, wit a band stand on top blasting out cajun tunes!" Now that sounds like a plan! This month's feature pin-up is Kayla Joy Bernard Kayla Joy is a life long native of Lafayette, Louisiana. She is in her final year at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette studying art education. Kayla designs modern rockabilly type jewelry and sells it at car shows, roller derby shows, hair salons, tattoo shops and online. This fiery red head is an aspiring model and dreams of one day being on the cover of the infamous Vogue magazine. Besides Gulf Coast MotorSports, she has been seen in Rat Rod magazine, Rebel Rodz and the online magazine “Fixe”. Kayla just won a contest to be featured as Miss. October 2013 in Cynister photography's calendar. She was also crowned Miss. Bomber Bash 2012, Miss. Southern Who 2012 and Miss. Atomic Blast 2012! If you're lucky, on the weekends, you will see Kayla and her bearded man Mike walking their pets, Danzig and Little Mama in the park.

Jimbo, We drove over to the Mississippi Gulf Coast from Covington, La Friday around noon…..drove thru Bay St Louis, on hwy 90. When nearing Steve’s Marina Restaurant, the black and red ’56 wagon caught my eye. We stopped to take some shots and get some tea to go. My goal was to go to Edgewater Mall and we took a few shots along the way. When we got to the mall, it was Awesome. Cars all over…….we spent the rest of the afternoon there getting great shots of some beautiful cars. The next destination was McElroys Harbor House at Biloxi Harbor next to Hard Rock (my favorite place to eat on the Mississippi Gulf Coast….happy to see it back. I've been going to ocean springs since Katrina.) We had a great dinner there…..and got some good shots of hot rods in the parking lot. We left to drive back to Gulfport and starting losing sun……I was able to get some night shots thanks to my Canon and a faster lens. Saturday we stopped by the Courtyard Inn in Gulfport and took some shots of the cars in the parking lot and nearby. Then I got a chance to take some nice shots of cars on the beach road passing by on both sides. After a few hours….we headed back to McElroys again for a late lunch, where I got some shots of a beautiful 56 Chevy Nomad and yellow Challenger. That was our trip in an nutshell……and as all good things must come to an end…….we headed back to Covington, LA. Michael McDonald mcdonaldmp@charter.net You can check out Michaels photo album, 99 pages of great photos at www.Gulf CoastMotorSports.com. Go to the Gallery...you might even see a photo of your car or truck. He took around 1800 photos Fri and Sat.
