Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine I’ve found bitterness is always knocking at the door. It starts as a little seed. Just a little offense. No big deal. If you ignore it, let it go, nothing will come of it. But if you start dwelling on it, thinking of how you can pay them back, now that little seed is taking root. It’s starting to grow, and before long, it will pollute other areas of your life. That’s why Hebrews 12:15 says, “…that no root of bitterness springs forth and causes trouble and many become contaminated by it.” Notice bitterness is described as a root. You don’t see a root. It’s underground; it’s hidden. But here’s the problem: a bitter root produces bitter fruit. If you have a root of bitterness, it’s going to contaminate your life. Paying people back is overrated. Being vindictive, getting even doesn’t bring you lasting joy. That’s a temporary high, and then it’s gone. But when you dig deep and show mercy to those that have hurt you, you’re kind to someone that you have every right to ignore, you help that neighbor in need even though he’s always rude to you, you’ll feel a joy deep down in your spirit, a contentment, a satisfaction. You know what that is? It’s the smile of God. He’s saying, “I’m pleased with you. You’re coming up higher. I can trust you with greater influence.” God will not allow things to happen that won’t somehow move you to your destiny. … Joel Osteen
Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Looking at the pages in this months magazine, clubs are busy getting ready for the start of the show season. The events pages are filling up with car shows and cruise-in’s. Seems like April is when everyone starts rolling out of our Southern hibernation. … I know the groundhog didn’t see his shadow and spring is just around the corner but, beware of False Spring. You know what that is... you buy a lot of plants because it’s a nice warm day and they are on sale at the local plant place. You get them home and into the ground just in time to be first in your neighborhood. That night on the local weather report and they tell you there is a extreme cold front coming down from up north and temperatures are expected to freeze… False Spring can cost you and so can not being prepared for the Cruizin’ season.. Instead of planting why not try planning….check over you Cruizin vehicle for the upcoming shows and cruise-nights. Don't just jump in your car and drive off. Get into the habit of making sure everything is in order. Lights: Even new cars can get faulty or burned-out bulbs. Flip on your lights when you’re in a garage or aimed at a wall or a parked

If the lights work, you’ll see them reflected. Or get a friend to walk around the car while you operate the lights, including turn signals. Put the car into reverse - brake held firmly, of course - to be sure the backup lights work. Leaks: A glance tells you if there are puddles or stains under the vehicle. On newer cars, it’s probably just harmless condensation from using the air conditioning. But it also could be a big safety concern if the leak is, for example, brake fluid, antifreeze or transmission fluid. If in doubt, get the car to your service shop. Wipers: Turn 'em on. Do they work? Don't forget the rear-window wiper if you're driving an SUV or van, or one of the hatchback sedans that has a back-window wiper. Squirt washer fluid onto the glass as the wipers move, to make sure they clear the glass and don't just make a smeared mess. Wipers can age fast, especially on cars kept outdoors. Battery: New car batteries usually need replacing by the time they hit their fourth year. If the car sits outside in extreme weather, it could die sooner. Best you can expect is five or six years, says Yourmechanic.com. A dead battery means your car won't start,

possibly leaving you stranded in an unsafe place or situation. Tires : Don't rely on a look-see. Use a good tire gauge to check. Today’s radials always look a little flat because their tread mushrooms at the bottom for better road contact. And some vehicles use run-flat tires, which appear inflated even when low on air. Even new-car tires lose air over time. You're already careful about the pressure, but now that the rubber has some miles on it, don't ignore the tread. Put a quarter upside down into the groove. If all of Washington's head shows, you'll need new tires soon. Or buy a tread-depth gauge at an auto parts store. A depth of less than 1/8 of an inch is unsafe and potentially illegal in most states. Speaking of tires, if you like the sound & smell of tires being torn up by some of the koolest hot-rods from all over the country you won’t want to miss the 8th annual Atomic Blast April 26-27 at Gulfport Dragway. April 5 & 6 is the Gulf Coast Auto Show. Hosted by the Coast Cruizers and they are starting off their event with a Dinner Run & Cruise-in at Woody’s Roadside on Hwy 90 Biloxi, MS.. Sure hope to see you there!! Here are some of my emails …. Jimbo, A doctor that had been seeing an 80-year-old woman for most of her life finally retired. At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her. As the doctor was looking through these his eyes grew wide as he realized Grandma had a prescription for birth control pills. "Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are birth control pills?" "Yes, they help me sleep at night." "Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely nothing in these that could possibly help you sleep!" She reached out and patted the young doctor's knee and said, "Yes, dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16-year-old Granddaughter drinks. And believe me it definitely helps me sleep at night." You gotta love Grandmas! Jimbo, An elderly, but hardy cattleman from Texas once told a young female neighbor that if she wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gunpowder on her oatmeal each morning She did this religiously and lived to the ripe old age of 103. She left behind 14 children, 30 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and a 40 foot HOLE where the crematorium used to be. Jimbo, Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was, 'Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk.' The question was worth 70 points or none at all. One student was hard put to think of seven advantages He wrote: 1) It is perfect formula for the child. 2) It provides immunity against several diseases. 3) It is always the right temperature. 4) It is inexpensive. 5) It bonds the child to mother and vice versa. 6) It is always available as needed And then the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test he wrote: 7) It comes in two attractive containers and it's high enough off the ground where the cat can't get it. He got an A+.

The '67 Golf Model and '69 Woody Wagon in downtown Ocean Springs during Cruisin' The Coast 2018 between my wife's 1930 Ford school bus and our '74 VW Thing. Jimbo, Some pictures and a few notes: from kingmidgetcarclub.org/ there you can find extensive and boring history of the King Midget automobile. The company built cars from 1946 to 1970. (I tell people they were foreign made....in Athens, Ohio that is.) I have a collection of original magazine ads for them...mostly from the back of Popular Mechanics. Every kid wanted one in the '50s & '60s and it's never too late to have a happy childhood! I restored the '67 golf model King Midget from boxes and baskets of rusty parts in 2006 and I bought the '67 truck and woody wagon from a man in Ohio in 2018. (both of the bodies were built by a retired cabinet maker and are the only ones like them). My son, Brett and I borrowed a trailer from Gary Foutz, drove to Ohio and brought them to their new home in Ocean Springs. My wife Gloria and I are the only Mississippi members of The International King Midget Car Club. Ours are the only King Midgets ever registered in Cruisin' The Coast. (The golf model was first entered in 2006) We have attended King Midget rallies and jamborees at a number of locations over the years including in Athens, Ohio, Connecticut and Florida. We plan to go to North Carolina in June of this year for a Southern Chapter of the International Club rally. (we have an enclosed trailer, but can only take one at a time) Although they were originally powered by 12 H.P. Kohler engines, the truck now has a 16 H.P. Kohler and the other two have Briggs VanGuard 18 H.P. V-twins. All three now use Comet Clutches and are "automatic shift". My wife jokingly refers to the golf model as "my lawn mower car" and adds that I put the deck back under it on the weekends and get "3 yards to the gallon". Even though they will go faster, they cruise nicely at about 35-40 MPH. All three are Mississippi titled, licensed and insured for street use. I'm not a golfer, but the golf model is really fun to cruise around in. The top folds down, the doors come off and it has foot rests on the front fenders. There is only a handful of golf models surviving today. Ed Booth

The Story Of Two Hood Ornaments Story by MCC Member: Henri Fuselier If you are a Mopar fan you should know who Avard T. Fairbanks is and his contribution to automotive history. Who is he you say? Let me tell you a story. Avard T. Fairbanks, a young artist, whose medium of choice was sculpture, arrived in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1929. He certainly did not have the money for a new car. An up and coming Chrysler corporation was nearby and Fairbanks thought he could offer to re-design their meager radiator cap into one befitting such an innovative company in exchange for a new car. He took several sketches and went knocking on the doors of the corporate office. He was told they were about to introduce an all-new Plymouth PA series, featuring Floating Power. "The Smoothness of an Eight with the Economy of a Four” was the advertising pitch. Could he symbolize that in a radiator cap ornament? Fairbanks designed a mermaid coming up out of a swirling wave...then gave her the wings of an eagle. The mermaid was a hit: Floating Power, indeed! Over the years, these radiator caps have come to be known as “the Flying Lady”. In return for his work on the little mermaid, Fairbanks was paid with a red 1932 Chrysler Royal Eight. Avard Fairbanks’ work for the Chrysler Corporation was not over, however. As he recalled in a Southwest Art magazine: "One evening I got an urgent call from the engineers at Dodge automobile company asking me to meet them in ten minutes. They explained that they had 10,000 cars that needed hood ornaments and that they wanted something as attractive as the ornament on a Rolls Royce, but for the cheapest car! I took along my clay and an animal book by my friend William Hornaday and spent the next several days at their headquarters. They brought in food and a couch and I went to work." He suggested a mountain lion, a tiger, a jaguar and other animals. Finally, he started modeling a mountain sheep. When the engineers read that the ram was the “master of the trail and not afraid of even the wildest of animals,” they became enthusiastic about the symbol. Walter P. Chrysler wasn’t as convinced. "Fairbanks, what does a ram have to do with Dodge cars?" Fairbanks replied, "It is sure-footed; it’s the King of the Trail; it won’t be challenged by anything.” They nodded their heads. Then, with a bit of corny humor, added, “And if you were on the trail and saw that ram charging down on you, what would you think? —DODGE!” To which Walter Chrysler excitedly replied “That’s it! The ram goes on the Dodge!”

I started work on the Big Truck project once again the past few weeks. But the progress became bogged down as it seems usual with most endeavors of the automotive nature. I will attempt to relay my frustrations here. The first problem arose after welding elbows to the header collectors. I bought some fittings and pipe from Speedway Motors, all mandrel bends and swaged on one end. After several fits and attempts to get things perfect, the welding began. Then the problems started, the welder that sits idle most if not all of the time decided it would not feed wire any more. Solution number one after searching the manufacturers site was to buy a new mig gun/cable assembly. No where on the manufacturers site, did they offer up a place to buy parts. I only needed a switch on the gun. So, an Amazon search led me to buy the whole gun and not just a switch. Could not find the switch on their site. Then in another search in Slidell for something else, I drove by a welding supply place and dropped in by chance to see if they could get a switch, it was like Christmas and Easter and my birthday all in one, they had a switch. Now to cancel the gun from Amazon, too late. So now the welder is fixed, works like a champ. We finish up the stuff immediately coming off of the headers, and an executive decision, (my brother the welder and myself) was made. Let’s put flanges on all of the major pieces of the exhaust tubing from here to the mufflers, so that if we have to work on the transmission or other items, we won’t have to cut the exhaust pipe to facilitate those efforts. So, the search began for some 2.5 inch thee bolt flanges. Now I feel like the guys from the movie Oh Brother where art Thou, when he was trying to buy the hair product at the store that he wanted, and could only obtain it in two weeks, he declared he was in a town that was two weeks away from everything. Apparently, my search for those elusive exhaust flanges were of the same fate as the hair gel, they were two weeks away. I finally found a set at Jegs, just two sets though, and as fate would have it, they don’t keep but two sets on the shelf at a time. And they are but now a few days away. I did source some magna flow mufflers from a local muffler shop and they had but just two flanges. At this point I should have a total of six in the coming days, the welder, (my brother) is ready to go, but we just don’t have all of the stuff we need to get after the rest of the exhaust system. Problem number three came about during most of this process too. It seems the tiny and I mean minute, tiny little gremlins have taken over the carriage house again. We put a tool or an item down and these little buggers like to move them to some obscure and remote location that is nowhere near where it was laid down, or even needed. We fight with this annoying problem all of the time. It seems we need about 50 tape measures, a couple hundred files or rasps, and just 30 or 40 I/2” and 9/16” wrenches. I am quite sure none of you have this gremlin issue, (wink wink). And the next garage, if I ever get to build another, will have built in lighting under heavy clear panels on the floor. No more wrestling with cords or drop-lights under anything. With enough wattage to spin my meter like a top, and enough lumens to compete with the sun. On another note, my #1 grandson Chase will be turning 10 this March and I want to wish him a Happy Birthday, also to all you folks out there have a safe and Happy Mardi Gras. Wish me luck, and with some I just may be able to get his Big Truck rolling before his next birthday. Later from the two weeks away from everywhere carriage house, … Gizmo.

Ok cruisers events slow down a little during the winter but you can still get out and find them. We started over in Slidell for a cool night at the Dairy Queen cruise-in. One of the first events of the new year is always the Covington Rod Run. As always had fun at this one even with a little rain. Still turned out as a good show. The next weekend I cruised over to Deep South Audio in Slidell for a benefit show. They were raising funds to replace the
engine for a young ladies special needs van. It was a excellent event for a special cause. That evening me and Glenda headed over for poboys at Pirates cove in Pass Christian then rode to the Long Beach Harbor cruise-in. Only had a few turn out for this one on a cold evening. The following weekend we headed back to Slidell and another Dairy Queen cruise-in only a couple diehards showed up on another pretty cold evening. Sunday afternoon found me headed over to Biloxi for a cars and Sushi event. Always a different collection of unique rides at these type events. A true car nut loves it all. The big shows/events and nicer weather is just around the corner for everyone. And remember in Springtime when y'all say what did you do through the winter? The answer is simple we never stopped cruising. See y'all out somewhere or everywhere. And remember to watch for our friends on bikes out cruising also. Allen .

By: Joyce Lachaussee The cold weather and wind kept the car turn out to only 25 but it didn't keep a large group from showing up - they just came without their cruise in vehicle and I can't say I blame them. Do you remember what was going on in 1961? Let me give you a refresher course the Russian, Yuri Gagarin, is the first human in space, Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba failed, Peace Corp was established by John F. Kennedy, Berlin Wall construction begins, Cold War is in full swing, first disposable diapers, Pampers, were sold, and so much more. New house average cost was $12,500, average income - $5,350, gas was .27 cents per gallon, eggs .30 cents a dozen, bacon .67 cents a lb. and a new car average price was $2,850. Not bad considering today's prices.
Bill Adams came over from Alabama in this 'almost' yellow truck with his wife Rita who braved the cold for her first Hardee's Breakfast Cruise. Hope to see you both again soon. There are several car shows coming up, hopefully, in warmer temps. Full Life Assembly in Hurley is hosting a show on May 4th, no registration fee, cash prizes and plaques, City of Lucedale is host to a Charity car, bike and truck show on March 9th starting at 5p.m. through 8 p.m. with an entry fee of $20 for this event. Snow Road First Baptist has an open car shown scheduled for April 13th with a $20 registration, free food and live music.
This pristine white Pontiac Bonneville made it's debut in '61. Bobby and Betty Hand have owned this car for 9 years and Bobby did a frame off restoration, which is an outstanding job. This car is classic and represents what the early to mid 60's automobile looked like. Bobby has been involved with cars and restorations since early childhood. His experience was obtained from his father and a "just get in there and do it attitude" by Bobby. In addition to the Bonneville, they own a '65 Mustang which they have had for over 20 years. Bobby and Betty are members of the Magnolia Cruisers and he is past President of the club, actually he stated is RETIRED past President! Thanks for bringing this piece of car history and maybe next time it will be warmer and Betty will come!
Thanks to everyone who supports this monthly breakfast. Everyone is welcome with or without a vehicle. We are a casual close knit group and love sharing our vehicles and stories. Please remember those who are suffering from health issues, grief in the loss of a loved one and just life issues in general. No one escapes problems in their life. So let's all say a prayer for each other and our Nation. As the country song says - "Always stay humble and kind". Hardee's Breakfast Cruise in is every 2nd Friday of the month beginning 7:30 til in Lucedale. All are welcome.

The House on the Hill With permission from the author, Laura Burks, I am privileged to include her poem about the family homestead in this month's article. Laura also provided photos and history on this family home in Iowa, which was an “American Foursquare built in 1910 in a stripped down fashion. This house was built for Laura's Great-Great grandmother, Mary Jane Murtogh 7 years after her husband died. They were blessed with 7 children, although 3 died in infancy. Finances were tight at that time, but the home was built just the same. This was the family homestead from 1910 until recently, when it had to be torn down. The family still owns the land. The house on the hill she will always be, Held close to my heart, forever in my memory. The house on the hill she held so much love, Good times, sad times, and blessings from above. A pork roast and beef roast cooked together for you, Or tomato soup made just for two. Iowa games on a little T.V., With loud crazy cousins, was where I longed to be. Cheese puffs tossed high in the air, Apron strings tied tight on a chair. East porch screen door banging and slamming, Bicycle riding, racing, and ramming. Grandma's phone call on Mary's lunch hour, A Christmas cactus with a single flower. Chickens to butcher with cousins and aunts, A bountiful garden to harvest and plant. Apple and cherry trees to climb and pick, A creek to jump over, or is it a crick? A barn to play in, with a high hay mow, Grandpa giving me my own baby cow. A porch swing, for swinging, talking or singing, A desk for drawing, writing or scribbling. Trucks, cars and tractors up and down the lane, A rosary during storms and later prayers for rain. Chasing cows and sorting pigs, Trying on Mary's coats, hats and wigs. An Easter egg hunt with one hidden in the spreader, A childhood really can't get much better. Farm reports on KMAQ, A bedroom window with a favorite view. Christmas cookies frosted just so, Country albums on the stereo. Christmas punch with maraschino cherries, Bushel baskets to load and carry. An old fashioned rose bush with dainty red blooms, A house with a story in every one of her rooms. Freshly wrung laundry hung on the line to dry, Stunning sunsets splashed across the sky. Generations before us living their life, William Joseph Bloom loving his wife. Just four walls and a roof, that house on the hill, So much more, a loving home for Mary, Helen, Cathy and Bill. That house on the hill, a comforting place for so long, She fulfilled her duty, she was stately and strong. The house on the hill, she will surely be missed, But our true love is for dear ones we have hugged and kissed. The house on the hill she will always be, Held close in my heart and forever in my memory.

Stories of events surrounding this homestead abound and it would be delightful to explore them in depth. Unfortunately, I don't have that much space. I will relay some with you that Laura has shared. I have included a photo of a red 1963 Chevrolet truck, that was used for everything around the property. Horses were put in the bed to travel to trail rides and cows were taxied to the butcher. Of course hogs were hauled to the market too, thanks to wooden side panels. It was a typical farm truck with plenty of usability. Laura says: “My favorite story about this truck is when they put the front 2 wheels of a Farmall F-20 (1930's era tractor) into the bed of the truck. The other 2 large wheels were on the road. NOT safe at all, but they were taking the F-20 to the first annual antique tractor pull in Donohue, Iowa in 1970. My grandpa won his division and was mighty happy!! He even won a trophy. It was displayed proudly for many years.” This memory from Laura is a good one: “My mom, Cathy Bloom, in 1964 was dating a boy. They met at the local gas station hang out. This young man owned a 1962 white Pontiac Bonneville with brown interior and an automatic gear shift on the floor. Her brother Bill would shoot his gun out of his bedroom window into the air, when her date would drop off Cathy. Kinda ruins the kiss at the end of the night when your brother is watching and shooting!” Another story that happened should dredge up some of your own memories. There is a photo of “Uncle Bill” standing beside the family car, a 1956 Oldsmobile. “Uncle Bill religiously washed and waxed it before every date. In 1963, my grandfather drove the car around the country block, and then up and down the lane in order to have the odometer land on all zeros, as he was getting ready to turn over to 100,000 miles. Back then there was no 100 thousands place on the odometer. When the odometer read 99,999 he wheeled it into the front yard with the display landing exactly on 000,000! (My grandfather was recovering from a massive heart attack and this was one of his first times behind the wheel after the heart attack.) “My Aunt Mary, bought her first car in 1956. It was a '55 Chevy. She worked in town, 6 miles away and had not yet learned to drive. She did not want to learn how to drive in anyone else's car, so she bought her own for a measly $900.00. Her brother Bill taught her to drive in the fields., then moved on to gravel roads.” Relates Laura. This recounting brings back so many memories from my life, and it expresses Laura's heartfelt memories of hers. It is well written and touches me deeply, as I am sure it does you. Barbara Kingsolver wrote: “It's surprising how much memory is built around things unnoticed at the time.” Gotta Cruise!
‘Tis an old deserted homestead On the outskirts of the town, Where the roof is all moss–covered, And the walls are tumbling down; But around that little cottage Do my brightest mem’ries cling, For ‘twas there I spent the moments Of my youth,—life’s happy spring. the red farm truck.
I remember how I used to Swing upon the old front gate, While the robin in the tree tops Sung a night song to his mate; And how later in the evening, As the beaux were wont to do, Mr. Perkins, in the parlor, Sat and sparked my sister Sue. There my mother—heaven bless her! Kissed or spanked as was our need, And by smile or stroke implanted In our hearts fair virtue’s seed; While my father, man of wisdom, Lawyer keen, and farmer stout, Argued long with neighbor Dobbins How the corn crops would turn out.

Then the quiltings and the dances— How my feet were wont to fly, While the moon peeped through the barn chinks From her stately place on high. Oh, those days, so sweet, so happy, Ever backward o’er me roll; Still the music of that farm life Rings an echo in my soul. Now the old place is deserted, And the walls are falling down; All who made the home life cheerful, Now have died or moved to town. But about that dear old cottage Shall my mem’ries ever cling, For ‘twas there I spent the moments Of my, youth,—life’s happy spring. by Paul Laurence Dunbar

I have put a lot of work into the Hot Rod Show during the off season. If I had to add it all up hour wise, I would guess in excess of 80 or 90 total hours. Adding new music (including a total day of country music), new bits, talking with agents of celebrities, preparing interviews with celebrities, logos on the trailer, an electric tongue jack installed, all these were done in bits and pieces, when I had time. But now it’s go time… The first show of the season for me is Emerald Coast Cruizin on Panama City Beach, FL and on its heels… the 10th Annual Spring Street Festival Car Show in New Roads, LA. Emerald Coast Cruizin’s Spring show is March 6-9 at Aaron Bessant Park (behind the famous Pier Park) in Panama City Beach, FL. Panama City Beach is my old stomping grounds as a teenager! I love this area! This show will benefit Hurricane Michael storm recovery. As you know Hurricane Michael devastated Panama City, FL and areas to the east of Panama City. What a lot of people do not know is that Panama City Beach, ten miles west of Panama City was spared the destruction. Panama City Beach looked like a Tropical Storm came through it. Within in a day or two PCB as its known, was back to normal, looks wise. This car show will benefit the Hurricane Michael recovery effort; Rakes and Lisa Parish have worked hard to put together an awesome show, starting Wednesday with your arrival and Thursday through Saturday with the car show. There’s always a giant Mega 50/50, the winner gets half and hurricane relief will get the other half. There is a classic car auction with the LW Benton Auction Company; included will be items that also benefit hurricane relief. Joe and Amanda Martin from the hit TV Show, Iron Resurrection on the new Motor Trend Network will be at this show signing autographs, taking pictures and talking with fans. If you have not met Joe and Mandy, they are as real as it gets. I have watched celebrities deal with fans for 40 plus years. The Martins treat every fan special and that is rare dealing with celebrities. I just love this couple to death for it too, very special people. Friday and Saturday will feature live entertainment on

the main stage. Friday will be Country Day at the show, all day. Beginning at 11 am, Country Music Star “Sylvia” with her string of Top 40 country hits including “Nobody” takes the stage, following her show will be Country Music Star “Ronnie McDowell” who helped our country heal from the death of Elvis with his mega hit “The King Is Gone” and including all his other hits. Topping off the day around 3 pm and headlining the event with be “John Schneider” “Bo Duke, of the Dukes of Hazzard” with his band Hazzard Nation performing his four number 1 country hits and many more of his top 40 singles. There will also be great music on the live stage on Saturday including the “Terry Brock Band” featuring a former singer from the group “Kansas.” There will also be a Vintage Cruiser Costume Contest with prizes during the show. Night time will feature events at Sharky’s, Hammerhead Fred’s and Runaway Island Beach Clubs, or… you can just sit out on The Strip in your lawn chairs and watch the cruisers go by. Emerald Coast Cruizin always has a ton of cars and a ton of fun, sponsored by the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, NAPA Auto P a r t s , G r un d y I n s u r an c e Company, Velocity Restoration and Kelly’s Classic Truck Parts. Emerald Coast Cruizin March 6-9 in PCB, FL, check out Emerald Coast Cruizin on Facebook for registration and lodging details.
The very next weekend, Saturday March 16, Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show will roll into New Roads, LA, down on the False River for the 10th Annual Spring Street Festival Car Show. The False River was once a part of the mighty Mississippi River, but to help

straighten out the river for navigation many years ago, this eleven mile section was cut off on each end. So you have a body of water as wide as the Mississippi and eleven miles long. So it created an incredible lake for fishing, boating and skiing. There is a house or camp on just about every inch of this lake all the way around. And the town and the show are right down on the banks of the river. This will be our 4th year to perform at this event. New Roads goes all out for this show, expect 300 classic cars to take over the entire downtown area. Auto Zone, Main Street Merchants, the City of New Roads and Pointe Coupee Cruisers really make this show a fun one. I get to stay in a retro hotel downtown in this incredible little retirement/vacation town, just a block away from the Hot Rod Show trailer and there’s a great seafood place right out my back door, sitting out over the water, two nights of total bliss in a classic downtown setting. The thing I have learned about Cajun cruisers, they know how to eat and they know how to have fun. This show is all of that and more. You can eat breakfast in a little downtown café and then have the best time during the car show which takes place from 9am til 3pm on Saturday. Auto Zone provided over $7,000 dollars in door prizes last year, I think just about every cruiser went home with something. The Mega 50/50 is always big also. 300 cars in downtown… in every nook and cranny they can get a car in and everyone having a big ole time. Last year’s show was dedicated to Pop Langlois, the first winner of the Cruisin The Coast Raffle Car and a leader with the Point Coupee Cruisers, this year we remember Rick Falgout, the guy that first brought me in to do the show, another cog in the wheel of the Pointe Coupee Cruisers gone way too soon. 300 classic cars, over 2,000 people in downtown New Roads. The first 125 registered cars also get an event shirt. It’s a special show I look forward to each year. New Roads, LA is about 35 miles NW of Baton Rouge, LA. Registration and info is available at newroadscarshow.com. Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show is starting to get busy and I personally invite you to one or both of these fine car shows, 2019 is off and running. I hope you have your cruiser ready! Keep that 17 FOREVER state of mind going and we’ll see you down the road at a classic car show…oh and bring a kid with you! til next month… Terry

February 9, 2019 By: ChandaElaine Every month Texoma Cars & Coffee gets just a little bigger - - and this blustery Saturday morning was no exception! After some socializing, the drawing was held for the official Bumblebee movie poster presented by Aimee Freise. Cars are fantastic (obviously!), but what I really love are the amazing stories behind the cars and the people who own them. It was a real treat to hear Mike talk about his about his cool, green, 1967 Ford….not a Mustang Fastback. It has a truly unique, one-of-a-kind story.
I spent about an hour on the phone with the second owner of the car who, like myself, is a former Army paratrooper. He’s a Vietnam vet and he served two combat tours in Vietnam. Being the second owner, he saw this car all through Vietnam when he was there, driving around Saigon. He told me a bunch of interesting stories….One of the stories was that back in 68 he was on a bridge north of Saigon when this car rolled up along with First Infantry Division. That’s when he got out and talked to the guy and that established their relationship. He ended up buying the car and bringing it home. Drove it all through Fort Bragg and he put his daughter through college and through her military career in the 80s….
MIKE NELSON: So, I’ve been looking for a fastback for a couple of years, looking for the right one. I didn’t want one that had already been rebuilt and restored. I came across this on, of all places, Craigslist, and they were asking $18,000 for it. If you just Google keyword “Vietnam Fastback ‘67” it will pop-up everywhere. There were like, a hundred ads on the internet. But I started talking to this guy and he wasn’t having any luck selling it. There were too many people thinking it was a fraud - - fake VIN tags, fake everything. So, he and I struck a deal and I ended up doing a trade with him for another vehicle I had plus some cash on my side that I had to pitch in. So, we ended up making the transaction and I got the car back (to Texas). The guy promoted this car as being a Vietnam export. It’s actually not a Mustang, it’s a T5. If you notice, there’s no Mustang tags anywhere on it. Anywhere that used to say Mustang says Ford. There were copyright protections on the word Mustang in a lot of different countries. So, $10,000 was all these countries were wanting to use the term Mustang. Ford refused to pay it and they just replaced Mustang with Ford. Anyway, I got the car and it had the original buck tag. You can tell it wasn’t a re-pop, it was original. They had the VIN and all the different information of it. It had South Vietnam stamped on the tag. There’s a T5 registry and a guy named Gary Hanson has heard of this car, and he thought it was fake. He said all of the T5s he knows were sent to Germany, maybe one sent to Canada. To make a long story short, I was happy with the car as it was. I wasn’t worried about the originality of the Vietnam part of the history. It was relatively low-rust; zero rust in the floor pans and frame rails, just a little bit around the body. It was missing the engine and transmission; it already had a new interior. So, when I got the car in my possession, I called Kevin Marti and I got a Marti Report on the car. The Marti Report proved it was true T5. There were 154 T5s made. Everything else on the car was original and that validated the fact that it was a 4-speed car, a V-8, etc. But when I sent Kevin a picture of the data tag, he said, “That’s a rare car.” I think he was trying to promote his own business, but he said for another $200 you can get some advanced research on the car. So, the Marti Report came back and validated it as a real car and I paid another $200 to research the rest of the provenance. Then he sent me a Ford authorized letter saying that in 1967 Ford built and exported five Mustangs to Vietnam, only one of them was a fastback and it was that VIN. So, this is one of one…. It’s not the fact this car was exported to Vietnam, it is that it took a special owner to request it through Ford and get approved to be stamped and exported to Vietnam during the height of the war. So, that’s a pretty cool fact that’s it was build and stamped and shipped to Vietnam.

So, anyway. That’s the car. It’s not for sale. It’s very special. I’m not wanting to flip it. I’ve got a 302 in it right now. It runs and drives good; 4-speed; new electrical system. Everything on the car works. I’m building a Boss 302 motor - - I got an original Boss motor I’m going to put in it. Not hopped up, but I think it’ll look good under there since I have already lost the original 289 that it came with. Just trying to keep it original. Not going to paint it, just doctor the rest spots. There’s a lot of funny stories. He said the battery exploded during Vietnam, when it was over there. They cleaned it as good as they could, but it caused some issues. His daughter was driving it in the 80s and hit a dip too hard and it broke the right front frame rail and the whole front of the car fell off. He replaced all that, got it working right with original metal. It looks really good. There were some other stories about…. There was this one time, his military company had a party and he had that car completely filled. He had 28 watermelons in it, the backseat folded down. Opened the door and watermelons were falling out. Anyway, he’s looking for some original pictures. He thinks he may have some, maybe some 8mm. He’s got some old pictures and possibly some old videos he’s wanting to send me. I love hearing stories like this! Can’t wait until the next meet!

A couple of years ago, while wandering the grounds of Cruise Central during Cruisin’ the Coast, my husband, Charlie, and I encountered two incredible cars and their equally incredible owners. Jack Sweeden and Lloyd and Tijuana Rains were parked under the oak trees in their Second Generation 1935 Auburn Speedsters. There was a constant parade of people around the cars and hundreds of questions asked. Everyone was encouraged to touch the cars and even get in them for photos. That alone tells you that these car owners are different.
By: Lynne Lightfoot
Each speedster bore on its dashboard a plaque inscribed, “This certifies that this AUBURN AUTOMOBILE has been driven 100.8 miles per hour before shipment.” It was signed by David “Ab” Jenkins, the speed record driver who achieved some of his greatest successes at Bonneville behind the wheel of an Auburn Speedster.
Cruise Central, Cruisin’ the Coast 2017 I was immediately smitten with these cars. It’s easy to see why people, like actor Errol Flynn owned one of these sleek machines. They scream class and sophistication and their art deco style is incomparable. These are not average cars. The original Auburn automobiles were designed and built in Indiana in the days when Bugattis crossed France and Bentleys tore through the British countryside. The Auburn Automobile Company (“AAC”) revealed its first version of the Auburn in 1928 and would offer variations through to the end of production in 1936. The 1935–1936 Speedsters won countless speed races worldwide. The Auburn’s flexibility made it a true “driver’s car,” ideal for both purring through crowded cities and roaring down country lanes. Errol Flynn and his 1935 Auburn Speedster.

Dashboard Plaque Original 1935 and 1936 Auburn Speedsters have become some of the most sought-after cars from the Classic era. Quality specimens are now selling for $1M. Glenn Pray, bought the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Company in 1960 and received tons of new old stock parts intended for production of vehicles prior to the AAC bankruptcy. In 1968, he put the Auburn Speedster back into production. Pray referred to his Speedsters as Second Generation Cars or Auburn Continuations as they were never meant to be replicas of the originals. His cars, Auburn 866 Speedsters (the "8" was in reference to the Auburns original 8 cylinder series of cars and the "66" from the year 1966 when engineering started on the Second Generation), were modern-day versions of the original Auburn Speedster. Their serial numbers are sequential with the original autos which designate them as continuations of the originals – not “reproductions.” Luxuries such as power steering, power brakes, air conditioning and V8 drive trains with independent suspensions were not available on the original cars, but they were on his cars. 866 Speedsters were built from 1968 through 1981 when, due to health reasons, Glenn stopped building cars. Pray used original Auburn parts, trim and chrome on his cars as inventory allowed. As parts were depleted, new parts were produced.

Glenn Pray and one of his Second Generation Auburn Automobiles. Jack and Lloyd have Second Generation Auburns. Jack has two from 1935 and Lloyd and Tijuana have three 1935s and one 1936 in their garage. Now very close friends, Jack met Lloyd and Tijuana at car shows in their home state of Oklahoma. Their similar taste in cars and their incredible skill sets are so closely matched that they were destined to become friends.
What makes Jack and Lloyd so impressive is that they have built their cars from piles of pieces and parts. These men don’t buy restored vehicles - they go to swap meets and are constantly searching salvaged parts. If they can’t find the part they need, they make it. They do upholstery and make convertible roofs. They only things Lloyd outsources are chrome work and alignments. Everything else, is done by him.
When asked how he has been able to do so much, he said that anyone can do what he does. Lloyd said, “You have to have a dream. Set Goals and then work toward those goals. You can have anything you want that way.” He has always believed that if somebody else can do it, whatever that may be, so can he. When it comes to his cars, he has certainly proven that to be true.
Of Lloyd’s three daughters, eight grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren, only one – his 9-year old grandson, Lennon – shows a strong interest in Lloyd’s car obsession. Lennon is his shadow and he wants to learn how to do everything. He is already working on engines, doing body work and sewing. He has his own spray gun for painting and wants his own welding helmet. Lloyd is confident Lennon will carry on for him someday. Jack is retired from furniture manufacturing and restoration. Some of the skills he learned with furniture get used in his car fabrication. He loves attending swap meets and has travelled from Florida to Wisconsin for parts. He is really looking forward to the first swap meet of the season in a few weeks. Jack “can’t wait to smell the rust.” Jack has built 35 cars including his two 1935 Auburns, a Pierce Arrow, a Bentley, a Model A limousine, a 1915 C Cab Hearse. He enjoys building street rods, too. He even made a street rod out of a 1909 tulip-bodied Rolls. It was 7 feet tall and he could stand inside it with his cowboy hat on. The only thing original about it was the body style. Everything else was custom for rodding. His most recent build was a “Pumpkin Car” that he named the Cinderella Express. It is orange with orange velvet upholstery with purple buttons. It seats 6 and it is a hit with his granddaughter and at local events.
Lloyd started building go-carts as a kid. He worked on his first car, a 1951 Nash Ambassador. In 1962, shortly after graduating high school, he bought a new Corvette. He still has it. Since then, he has built dozens of cars including a 1906 Horseless Carriage using a 1 cylinder lawnmower motor and narrow motorcycle wheels, a 1909 Rio and a 1911 Silver Ghost Rolls Royce which he still owns. They share garage space with 17 or so more classics that he has built one piece at a time. There are two more Rolls – a 1928 and a 1939, and a 1929 Buick, the three of which he and Tijuana used when they owned and operated a limousine service. Lloyd likes “big-bodied cars.”

Jack’s Auburns are fully custom. He cut into his red Auburn and added 12” in front of the windshield and 6” to the rear bringing it to about 19½ feet long. He lengthened the fenders 8” and widened them 2”. The tail fins are all custom by Jack as the original car was finless. The car has been lowered and a running board added. All the chrome except for the windshield was handmade by him. He then designed and made a removable hard top out of fiberglass based on a Duesenberg design he found on the internet and modified to fit. The original Auburn only came with a soft convertible top. The car has a LS-3 Engine with 4L-60E transmission and a 100% modified drive train. It averages 23 mpg.
Jack Sweeden
Can you even see me in there?
Jack is divorced with two daughters, one grandchild and two great-grandchildren. None have yet shown much interest in his cars. He hopes that may change one day but until then, he’s going to continue enjoying “showing off in style.”
Lloyd Rains
Jack’s interior upholstery. Lloyd and Jack agree that it costs more to build a Ford or a Chevy than an Auburn and that the return on the more common cars is much lower. Jack said he doesn’t invest in the stock market. He invests in cars. He said that he knows exactly how much he has in each car and knows what he can sell them for. You can’t say that about the market.

19th Annual Groundhog Gala By: Brian Barsema February 2, 2019
Hosted by the Misfires Car Club. The Groundhog Gala is a central Florida tradition. If the Hot Rod leaks oil because its cold outside, car show season is delayed. The Gala signals the start of car show season in Central Florida for many car enthusiasts. The Groundhog Gala takes place at “The Barn” in Sanford using its parking lot and next store. This show is pre-64 cars and trucks only with a few random exceptions. This has been my second visit for me in 4 years to this wonderful show. My pictures do not do this show justice this year. Many outstanding rides attended. A party from start to finish with The Barn as a venue is as always great hosts. This show also kicks off seeing a lot more pinups at cars shows. Weather turned and ladies got dressed up. This year The Luscious Ladies paid tribute to one of their largest supporters dressing up in Leopard print to show support for Thomas Detrick’s family. (The leopard print is for a picture Thomas took in a leopard one-piece Pajama to help raise money for a charity calendar.) The outstanding weather brought in many outstanding rods and bikes. This show reminds me of a giant reunion. Once you go to the Gala, you’re in and the more fun you have every year.

By Candy Cocktail A few years ago I did a series of articles showcasing several modern day pin-up artists who have each put their own unique flair on the timeless style of pin-up artwork. With interesting biographies, different mediums of art or illustration, and sultry, detailed ladies, these artists are each making pin-up art their own. This month I am proud to introduce three women from various corners of the world who are putting their own unique twist on the classic pin-up. a website, Hikaru's work is for sale in her Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/jp/shop/NEEDLELANDbyGummy

Hellen Lamarr: Italian artist Elena is the developer of Hellen Lamarr. "Hellen Lamarr" was born two years ago from artist Elena's passion for the vintage-retrò world of the '40s and '50s (in case you did not instantly recognize the infamous starlet's surname she used), classic Old Hollywood movies, revisiting the great protagonists who made an unforgettable era, the Pin-up. With a style of artwork created by combining both Goth and creepy tastes, giving life to illustrations and graphics, mainly pencil and black ink, which emulate the old horror on fur (first was "The Bride of the Monster"), also printed on t-shirts and bags. From the pencil sketch to the print, even the seam of the bags with the characteristic coffin shape are all done by hand! The forever catchy Munsters Theme is the soundtrack that she can never be without! Rock Dollz: Conceived by Brazilian journalist and illustrator Carolina May, Rock Dollz was created in August of 2018. Evolving from her drawing hobby, Carolina's popularity has been steadily growing over the past months. With the primary goal of portraying women in a beautiful and graceful pin-up style, her business has been growing, attracting fans from not just in Brazil, but from other countries around the world. An avid fan of comic books, superheroes, horror stories and the vintage universe, Carolina May has a unique style to illustrate her Dollz, with the popular Funko Pop collectible dolls and chibi art in mind. Chibi Art is a stylized drawing line, made popular in Japan, in which the characters have heads larger than the size of their bodies. However, her drawings go beyond the Rock Dollz. Carolina also draws commissions for female characters from the superhero universe, as well as creating her own comic books. Her main influencers are the artists that have inspired her, including Eugênio Colonnese, José González, Salvador Larroca, Greg Land, Gil Elvgren, Alberto Vargas, Olivia De Berardinis, Armando Huerta and Benicio. In addition to the Rock Dollz series, the Brazilian artist has launched the series "Petz", focused on the cartoon of pets. Although recent, Petz has already achieved a great achievement. The first illustration from the series, made in honor of Gonk, Mistress of the Dark (Cassandra Peterson) Elvira's iconic pet poodle was published on Peterson's official Instagram profile. At the age of 25, Carolina May is also a writer, cosplayer and pin-up model, being a member of Pink Mink Mafia Brazil. To order a cartoon or view more of

This months OVERSPRAY is on my favorite piece in 2018 by far but a lot of work which shows in the final piece.!!! 1) To start this funky paint gun art piece I needed a background to mount it to. In the past I have seen a few variations on flat panels for backgrounds but I wanted to go outside the box and go more 3d with mine. I found a whole bedside of a truck that was damaged and noticed the curve in it and outlined a shield like pattern. Jason Marshal cut it out and helped throughout this entire piece. After all, this is for him and his very first paint gun and I wanted to do it for him because we work well together. 2) After the initial piece was cut and sanded right then we fully re worked it and treated it like a car with body work , primer, sealer, base, and clear. We also are doing the cup portion of the gun so bear with me on describing both during this lesson. 3) I then go with the usual method of scuffing it with a used grey scotch bright pad to ensure paint sticking. Remember I’m also doing the same to the cup part!! 4) I take my trusty fine line to make my gaps between my wood. It was kind of a feel thing I didn’t really know where I was going with it but just flowed it until I liked it on the cup and shield. 5) I decided on a blonder wood color so I grabbed my peachy rusty color and gave both panels long stripe like patterns and not fully covering it because this is a step into giving my wood more realism. 6) Now for the fun part… I play mad scientist and add a little black, red, and reducer to the original rust color to give it a darker feel. Not too much because I will do this twice so first batch I take an old brush and dip it into my palette and test it on a piece of cardboard to see if its what I like. Once I’m pleased I dip the brush into the paint and then semi-dry it off on the cardboard BEFORE I touch it to my panel. I got ready by masking off every other panel before doing this step to make it look more like separate planks. When touching the panel I use very long strokes and create a wood grain texture all over the panel flowing from top to bottom or depending on the plank layout. When satisfied with first layer I add a little more black and reducer 26
MARCH 2019
and repeat for deeper grain but this time don't cover it and choose “a little here and there “ method Now I waited for it to dry and masked other planks. REPEAT TILL DONE 7) I usually create my wood by strictly freehand but this time I’m trying out a new stencil I received for Xmas to see what I can do with it. It has handy wood rings ready so I just overlay my planks and just dust the pattern on where I see its needed until the flow is good. Even had a few knots handy so I used them as well. I used the darker wood color mix from previous that I created for this step. I also had to re mask off each section of planks again. I know it is a pain but I promise you the finished is worth the wait. Be careful taping on your project and kill the tape by attaching it to your fuzzy shirt a few times or jeans before you apply it to your piece. Just be careful and you will be fine. 8) I added a touch more black and over reduced for my shadowing. I traced the edge of planks and added a few free hand knots as well as feathering at end of planks to make them look worn. Once again… mask off each plank for this. You should already have a portion masked from last step and then you just go in reverse. 9) Now slowly pull all your fine line. 10) Repeat same steps on the cup. Masking each panel off and taking your time. 11) I went to my computer and designed a cross like design that I knew would look good as metal on the shield. I truly wasn’t sure what I would do next after wood but came up with this. Sometimes you just go with it and don’t think about the full picture and it works out better in the end. I use a low-tack vinyl for all my stencils so I don’t worry about it pulling my design off. I cut little peep holes before applying it so I could place it as right as I could the first time. Of course I then masked it off all the way. I turned to the cup and thought 2 metal bands would look good so masked off those as well. 12) Before you do this step double check your masking. Silver or any metallic paint has a killer overspray quality. I then based the entire sections fully. www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

13) This step was a pain but very necessary for the effect I needed. I turned to my fine line and went all the way around each and every part of the silver on the edge. I used an exacto and a lot of patience until it was done. This will make a beveled effect when I pull it last. 14) I used a mixture of black and a drop of blue over reduced with a piece of cardboard to give fine line light shadows all through the piece. I then used white in between each light ray here and there to give a nice bling bling look. 15) Pulled my fine line first and added a few shadows on the bevel where I saw fit. Then final pull to reveal a nice beveled iron look. 16) I cut some circles to add some funky looking rivets on the shield. Big ones for the shield and small for the cup. I placed them accordingly and masked off heavily. Sprayed with original silver, highlighted top section with white, and shadowed bottom section with over reduced black. Now pull again... 17) With the piece finally taking form Jason Marshal cleared it to perfection. 18) Now time for the gun itself fans. I cleaned the gun very harshly to make sure the leafing attached right. I don’t have a picture of lay out but what I did was mask off sections I thought would look good with gold all over the gun. I even used my plotter to cut a “est. 1998” stencil to fit right on bottom. When I
have it fully masked I take GOLD SIZE and brush it on in the areas I will attach leaf. It takes about 30 minutes before you are ready to leaf so be patient. I usually do a test area on something by me and touch that in 30 to see if my project size is ready. When its dry and kind of squeaky to the touch go ahead and add your leaf very carefully. I used a drafting horse hair brush to remove all the outer leaf slowly. 19) A buddy of ours had these cool spikes in his toolbox and donated them to our project for more pop. We also had to build a bracket for gun to be screwed to which is seen in bottom. We based them flat black and then taped over area before drilling holes on our panel. Now we assemble!!!

DIRT TRACK REVIVAL By: Chavus Holland Welcome back everyone! As we were doing the last two articles, we continue to countdown the days until the 2019 racing season begins! As I'm pecking at these keys on this computer right now, we are just 2 weeks away from opening night at Hattiesburg Speedway on March 1st!!! WE ARE EXCITED!!! This also means that the next time I write an article, it will be to report to y'all some real live 2019 racing action! I have decided I'm going to write this month about Chase's first time ever in the open wheel modified! I still remember it like it was yesterday! Chase seemed really calm in the days before his debut approached! I was a nervous wreck! We were set to race at LA36 Speedway in Louisiana on September 30, 2017. Chase had just turned 14 years old. This was certainly the meanest, most powerful racing machine he had ever sat his butt in! I had talked to him about every scenario we could think of! We had taken tons of pictures and videos of the car. We had done an interview and a photo shoot for a popular magazine in the area. We were kind of grandstanding! We were excited! I was hoping for the best, but secretly preparing myself for the worst! I'm not saying that I didn't have confidence in Chase, but let's be honest here, there were a million ways this could have turned out awful! I remember Chase going out for his first time ever for hot laps with a group of cars. He was fine and calm as we were buckling him in. He looked pretty good on the track as he kept his car under control the whole session. He wasn't super-fast, but he kept a nice pace. I thought he did great. When he came in the pits, I could see a look on his face that I had only seen one other time throughout his entire racing career! It was fear!!! Now I'm not picking on him, he had just hit the track for the first time ever in a machine that was custom built to go REALLY fast! I was scared sick myself! As he climbed out his car, his Paw Paw George and me, began questioning him about the experience and his car/ handling. When he got an attitude and turned snippy with us, I realized he was having issues, so we gave him some space. That wasn't normal for Chase! When I went back later to try and talk to him, and I realized he was still flustered, I offered him an out! I put my arm around him and told him I loved him. I told him I was very proud of him for having the guts to get in that car and do what he had done so far! I went on and told him that we could act like we had mechanical problems and load it on the trailer and take it to the house, and I assured him that I wouldn't ever tell anyone any different if that's what he told me he wanted to do! I could feel his little heart thumping like crazy! He said “no sir! I want to do this!” I calmed him down and told him to just take his time and just ride in the heat race. I encouraged him to get comfortable before trying to go fast! He went out for his heat race where he would be starting 5th in a 7- car field. When the green flag waved, he quickly fell to the last position. As the laps counted down, he began to get
30
MARCH 2019
comfortable which led to him making faster laps. He began to close in on the car in front of him and BAM…we're in 6th…Then 5th… Now were in 4th with 2 laps to go!!! Chase goes under the white flag challenging for 3rd position on the outside! Side by side into turns 1 and 2! I was cheering him on like a fool, and trying to video, as he reached down and used some of that horsepower down the back straightaway! Clean pass! Checkered flag in the air and an emotional flood leaking out of my eyes!!! Chase had just finished 3rd in his first race ever in the modified!!! I made another video as he came off the track and was passing by me headed towards our pit area that night… (MY FAVORITE RACING VIDEO!)…I still get emotional watching it as I hear my cracking voice saying “Here he comes folks, first time in this thing…started 5th finished 3rd!!! YEAH BABY YEAH” as we high five each other!!! Chase went back out for the feature and finished 4th out of the 12 cars that started! They wanted the top 5 cars in tech that night after the feature. The tech shed was in the infield, and there was no way I could get to him. Chase was used to always having me there with him in tech throughout our years in racing! He said he didn't know what to do, so he just watched the other drivers so he could do what they did. He said the 3 men in front of him all got out of their cars and began to shake hands and talk, so he climbed out his car and walked up amongst them and introduced himself…Now these guys are all at least 40years old, and/or well over, and here this little red headed kid comes walking up and begins introducing himself! Chase said one of the guys said, “How old are you son?” Chase told him 14 years old, and the guy said, “Dang you're just a kid!” They all congratulated him on his finish and welcomed him into the modified class! It was a very proud night for us all. We've talked about that night on multiple occasions since! We've talked about how that night defined us as a serious race team! Chase could have easily told me he wanted to load up and if he would have, who knows where we'd be today! Now when we are having a rough night, we can think back to our first night and know that we've just got to keep digging! To date, Chase has about 31 race nights under his belt now in the modified! Each race night has been an improvement from the last! It's been really exciting to watch him develop as a real contender in this class of talented racers! It's probably more-scary for Paw Paw George, Adrian, and myself now days, because Chase's fear is long gone! Chase is always very comfortable behind the wheel of his hotrod now days! Most nights I can't eat before the races because I'll feel sick. It's nothing for Chase to eat 2 cheeseburgers and a bag of skittles right before he calmly slides into the window to go race! LOL!!! PROUD doesn't began to describe how I feel about where Chase has managed to get in such a short time! One thing that I can't stress enough, is how much we appreciate each person who supports/follows what we do in racing! It means so much to see the fans in their “Young Gun” t-shirts, or to read the comments and inspirational words after a great night of racing! We love running into old friends and hearing them tell us how they keep up and follow along with our racing adventures! We are putting butts in the bleachers and trying to do our part to make dirt track racing great again! It's a great feeling indeed! Where will we end up??? Your guess is as good as mine, but the thing I know for certain is, we wouldn't have made it this far without our faith in God and this long list of small businesses that have opened their checkbook and slid this kid some money to go and follow his dream of climbing the racing ranks! We really appreciate you all!!! I would like to wrap this article up this month by sharing a list (in no particular order) of the businesses and people that have supported us so far for 2018/2019! I want to start by thanking Jimbo Perkins!!! Y'all know Jimbo…this is his magazine that we get a chance to tell our story in each month! Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine / Jimbo reached out to us last summer and said he had been following along on Facebook with Chase racing go-karts for years! Jimbo said he wanted to help us out! He offered us this great opportunity to write this monthly article! He also bought into some of the action by way of a monetary sponsorship, to promote his magazine on our car and custom fire

“10-50” Motor Vehicle Accident by owner & builder, Rusty Locklar of Elba Alabama: Photography by; AdPix.Biz I found this vehicle by accident… literally. I'm a volunteer firefighter in our community and one evening we received a call for a single vehicle accident. Arriving on scene we first checked the driver to make sure he was ok then we set out to continue duties of clean up. As we waited for the tow truck and Sheriff's Dept. to arrive I struck up a conversation with the driver. One topic led to another which soon led to him telling me about an old Ford his Dad began restoring years ago but fell ill and passed away before he was able to complete the car. Realizing he didn't have the time he thought he would to put into the car it was now just sitting in his barn collecting dust. I told him that myself and a friend were looking for a project car and asked if it would be possible for us to come look at it, he said yes and a time was set up. I called my buddy Alan to tell him we had a potential car to go look at, what we found was not what we were expecting. My original conversation with the guy led me to realize he didn't really know what he had so I was expecting to find an 80's model Ford. Low and behold, Alan and I rounded the corner of the barn to find a 2 door 1940 Ford sedan. While looking the car over we began asking the guy how much he would sell the car for. It didn't take long to reach an agreed price and the car was ours. Alan and I got the car to our shop and began working on it. We first rewired the car, replaced the whole fuel system and before long we cranked the 239 flathead. It ran like a champ, sounding great through our custom exhaust. Next we replaced the generator and regulator with a 12 volt conversion. From there we replaced the floor, trunk pans, tires, radiator and rebuilt the carburetor. After many hours of cleaning, sanding and fitting panels we had the car in primer. Now it was time to pick a paint color. Alan and I found a shade of blue called Blue Suede Shoes that we thought was perfect… until the first coat was laid down… it was horrible! It looked like a pastel bird egg blue, to light and not hot rod enough! We decided to add in some black which led us to All Shook Up Blue. Perfect! We finished up with window installation, weather strip, custom interior door panels, roll bar, custom air cleaner and custom lift off hood. We knew from the start we wanted to keep an old school traditional hot rod look. The car was finally finished, time to ride!

Army Medic and Model, “Doc”, Hannah is wanted in three states for kneeing a creepy biker in the groin. She's wanted in most states actually she's quite a catch. When she's not bringing wicked glamour to Hot Rod cars, trucks and evil bikes, she's caring for Pi & Bane, her large dogs. “Doc” is working two jobs, training horses, & risking her life for us all as a U.S. Army Medic. She has a deep, cerebral, reason behind her tattoos (not just “Hey, it looked cool at the time”) Her place is impeccably designed & decorated like a Home Decorating show, yet teases with a variety of reading material about ancient occult symbols, antique classic books, & graphic novels… Tank Girl & Star Wars, plus philosophy, & deep literature, all of which she actually reads. Her favorite pickup line is “Do you like Kipling?” (not really, it's an old joke, sorry) She's 5'6” tall, 35-22-35, her favorite drink is Tequila, her favorite band Nekromantix & her favorite movie is Mad Max. She's building a cafe racer. Whatta gal! She likes Black Widow (you guessed that already?), she's not ticklish, she makes an absolutely killer “Old Fashioned” & she's researching the species of Master Yoda. Some R&R with a Dance Card and Unexpected Benefits In 1960, a 17 year old driving a 1940 Ford pulled up next to a 15 year old driving a 1940 Ford, and asked “Wanna race?” Mr. Robert Parent challenged Mr. Robbie Duthuto a street race, and Robert won. The night ended with them meeting up at the nearest bowling alley to talk, but the friendship continues today. Mr. Robert Parent was born in 1943 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He began driving American Austin Bantams at the age of 13. When he was 15, he took the body off of a 1942 Ford and ran the chassis and engine. In the 11th grade, he bought the 1940 Ford, which he still has today. Throughout his lifetime, he has enjoyed spending his spare time as a machinist, fabricator and doing auto and motorcycle restoration. Mr. Robert and a close friend raced a nitro Harley Davidson in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and still loves to ride Harleys. Although he raced various cars and bikes throughout his lifetime, his first time on a race track in the roadster he still runs today was in 1988 at State Capitol Dragway in Baton Rouge. He lined up with a 1955 Chevy and outran him in a qualifying pass, and won. Two weeks later, he came in second in top eliminator and won $600.00. Mr. Robert ran NHRA for almost ten years, but had always wanted to run nostalgia. After racing in Missouri for several years, he found the Southern Gassers and the Southern Outlaw Gassers, who “is my family”. And then, in his words, he “found Sugar Bug and she has bugged for us ever since. She kisses my helmet per my wife’s request every race, and always takes time to sprinkle some Sugar Bug dust”. In 2017, he ran the H.A.M.B. drags, and won competition roadster. His altered roadster, “A Blast from the Past”, is a 1923 Model T, has a 355 cubic inch small block Chevy engine, runs on gas, 540 HP, and runs in the upper 5 seconds on an 1/8th mile track. His greatest prize, however, is his wife Donna, who is a nurse. They met in 1984 when she was a dance instructor, and Mr. Robert was her student. They married in 1985. She is at every race, and is so proud of him. I have personally witnessed many times her smiling at him when he’s not looking, a gentle touch on his arm before he gets out on the track, and an overall sense of pride and love. Mr. Robert’s advice to others is to try and learn everything about the mechanics of the car they are racing, especially how the chassis works and how the engine is tuned. His favorite part of racing is the people, hearing the noises, smelling the smoke and fuel, doing a burnout, and making a pass. He says, “Being at the track and taking part in the event is always the most fun, and the winning is just the icing”. Mr. Robbie Duthu was born in 1945 at Lake Charles, Louisiana when his dad was a pilot in the 670th Bomb Squadron USAAF. He lived in Houma, LA and then later Baton Rouge. During his high school years, he sold tires. After graduating he worked various jobs, and then began working for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife, where he became a captain and later retired. His first car was a 1940 Ford, but he also had a 1934 Ford. Around 1958, he and a friend had midget racers and would drag race those. His first race on a dragstrip was in Hammond, LA on an airstrip in 1959. In 1961, he won his first race in his 1940 Ford at Opelousas Dragway. Growing up, he admired Don “Big Daddy” Garlits and Charles “Boogie” Scott. Seeing Boogie’s blown altered was the deciding moment that Mr. Robbie knew he wanted to drag race. He has been in many races over the years, including road racing in Virginia in his Shelby Mustang. However, one of Mr. Robbie’s prized possessions is his Henry J which he races now. Mr. Robert Parent found the 1952 Henry J in Arnaudville, LA about six years ago. The only thing holding everything together was what was left of the roof. They tied and braced it so it wouldn’t break in half on the way home. It took over two years to restore it. It has a 396 small block stroker motor, and runs in the upper 6 seconds in an 1/8th of a mile. The car is named “Twin Spur” after Mr. Robbie’s brother’s oil company. He says the wheelie bars act like spurs used on a horse’s flank.....the horse takes off, much like his car does off the line. He says “the wheelie is an unexpected benefit”. One of his most memorable races was in Atmore, Alabama a couple years ago when he was able to line up with Erwin Aderhold. Both were in Henry J’s. Mr. Robbie states that from that point on, his racing has been “just a happy story”. One of the cars that Mr. Robbie has always wanted to race was a Willys, and he had also wanted to race Bill Ziel. Both those wishes came true in Mobile, Alabama, when he was able to line up against Bill in his Willys, “KraZy”. Although Bill won the race, Mr. Robbie states it was the pinnacle of his racing career. However, he also enjoys racing his friend, Hubert Dunbar, just for fun. He said he was even willing to spot him four car lengths if he would run him again. Mr. Robbie and Mr. Robert Parent ran against each other at King of the Hill in Gulfport, Mississippi. Mr. Robbie said as soon as he let his clutch out, he was watching Mr. Robert finish his run. They both have a lot of history together, and have shared their lives with each other. One of their favorite stories is when they were teens riding in the back of Hubert’s convertible and Mr. Robert wanted to fight. So, Mr. Robbie punched him while Mr. Hubert was fussing on them for fighting. Throughout their time, they’ve had bowling bullfrogs, falling out of car doors, “fancy gas”, racing on backroads, and ponds with no fish. May you both have many, many stories to come. In their own voices, “Wooooooooo Daaaaaaaa!”

By: Stefanie Lee As I pass through the gates of Gulfport Dragway, home to the ATOMIC BLAST, I know a mix of emotions will surface over the next few days. Starting with the excitement of seeing friends and family rolling in, some say its like a family reunion. Gulfport Dragway allows camping the track and as everyone to pulls in, they pick a site, set up camp and start to relax. Friday everyone gathers for a cruise to the local Rebel Dip, best ice cream cones in Gulfport, Joe Rouse and his family have been hosting cruise-in’s at the same spot since the early 60’s. Dishing out great food and ice cream. After Burgers and Shakes, Joe checks out the latest Rods to hit the street, we cruise back to the track to get
ready for the BLAST OFF. As the meet and greet gets closer with vendors starting to fill the space up, more camps sites going up, the sounds of mini bikes and laughter fill the air. And then you hear it, its always that one person that has to be the first to do a burnout. This year I hear it, I looked up to see who was it this year, it was a 5 year old Boy! He was in the coolest little Mini Rat Rod ever, and when I tell you this kid had this look of pure excitement in his eyes, it just filled my heart.

The sun is starting to set and with people still coming in the gates and the pit is filled with a variety of Rat Rods. The drivers meeting is under way, my anxiety is high everyone's safety is a concern of mine, along with my own personal concerns! I have my mind set this is going to work, so with my game face on I pulled my Pony tail up, put my hat on, ear plugs are in, eye protection on. Track official are in place to help if needed, each car has been checked and checked again now we wait for the shadow of the moon. As we sit in the middle of the track anxiously waiting for the count down to begin. I look into the stands, they are full of people, our staff is in place and the anticipation was like a roller coaster reaching the very top, right before the big drop! And then I see the lights, I hear each car start one by one. They were all ready. And then it really felt as if I was strapped to a Atomic Bomb, the noise was all around me, the smells of burning rubber and gasoline, the heat from the flames and the cloud of smoke that hovered over us all. And in that crazy moment I as I looked around I couldn't see anything, but I was just proud of myself, and that was an amazing feeling. I just conducted a roller coaster and rode it. Now I'm full of adrenaline, excitement and just thrilled with joy. The determination and appreciation for seeing a dream come full circle, is like a blast from the past for me.
Waking up early at the track on Saturday morning is my favorite part of the Atomic Blast. I have always enjoyed this time of the day. I find it quite and still for just a minute, that’s when you can see the beauty, craftsmanship and detail all of these vehicles bring to this event. Laid out like art gallery and rather it’s a new Rat Rod, Hot Rod, Gassers, Muscle cars, VW, or Diesels and don’t forget those burnout cars, flame throwing monsters, minibikes and even those lowriders, the point is they each bring something different to this event. That to me is what The Atomic Blast is about, a place where you doing you is allowed and encouraged! With all the things they offer at the Atomic Blast its also good to see others giving back to the community like The Coast Cruizers. A local car club that organizes a handicap van charity, with all the money made off of local donations at the MotorSports Pit Stop located at the track, this helps support this outstanding charity. Keeping everything moving forward in a positive direction. As the day moves on I see stained faces from all the those snow cones, the mini bike parades & races where a blast, burnout pit is wide open, drag strip has been running one after another all day. The Atomic Blast has a great swap meet, they even have several local vendors like Gas House tattoos on site for those with ink needs! So load up your family and prepare to have yourself an experience at the 8th Annual Atomic Blast! See ya at the track! Xo
