Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine Grateful people don’t see the worst, don’t find fault, don't focus on what’s wrong. They’re grateful to be alive; they’re grateful to have a job. If someone is constantly disgruntled, jealous, bringing division, recognize they are not for you. Your time is too valuable to let them poison your spirit. Don’t listen to their gossip about all the people they’re jealous of, how you’re not being treated right, how this other person would be so much better for you than your spouse. They are not healthy enough to give you good advice. Be kind, be respectful, but don’t hang around them. Don’t compare your life to other people. They may seem to have it better, they’re further along, but they don’t have the challenges you have. Run your race. God’s purpose for your life is not the same as theirs. Don’t look to the left or to the right. Stay focused on your calling. As long as you’re comparing yourself, you’ll be frustrated because you’ll always find somebody that looks like they have it better than you. . Don’t let people stir you in to being sour, ungrateful, upset. You have to put your foot down and say, “I will not let those seeds of discontentment take root in my life. I will not let that poison get in my spirit. I am grateful for what I have. I’m blessed to have a job, I’m blessed to have a family, I’m blessed to have my health. Keep your joy. Life is going to throw us curves. There will be disappointments, things that aren’t fair. That’s when you have to put your foot down and say, “Yet will I rejoice in the Lord.” We should make this decision every morning, “I will be joyful today.” Decide ahead of time that you’re going to enjoy that day. When people dump things on you, keep your lid on. Don’t let that get in you. When you’re tempted to get upset or frustrated, remind yourself that you have the power to remain calm. Keep it in perspective; this day is a gift. Honor God by living it grateful, happy, and to the full. “God will not allow things to happen that won’t somehow move you to your destiny.” … Joel Osteen

Hotel and restaurant parking lots will look like a car show wherever you go.. Putting on an event like this takes a lot of planning. The hosting Car Clubs help provide over 700 volunteers who help with registering vehicles, directing cars at the venues, giving directions, and welcoming our guests. These are just the jobs cruisers see. There are hundreds of behind the scenes and pre-event activities that volunteers help with all year long. a fellow car lover who is donating time to make this a fun event for all. If you get a chance you may want to say thank you to a volunteer during your visit. Cruise Central, our headquarters location, will be back at Centennial Plaza again this year! In fact, this historic campus, complete with two hotels, a 3-acre water playground, multiple restaurants, luxurious green spaces, and a majestic dancing water fountain, is the official “Host Resort” of Cruisin’! So you know, CTC will occupy the east side of the property, as usual, and the resort will take up the remainder of the property to the west. Registered Cruisers will turn to the RIGHT upon entering the property, just as you always have. Unfortunately, spectator parking will be offsite. Here are some of my emails …. Jimbo, “Cruisin For Our Veterans”, Sending out a big hello to all our cruiser friends and visitors. This year for cruising the coast, the Boyington Nurisng Center salutes our Veterans. The Boyington will be celebrating our annual car show for the Residents. Stop by at 1:30 p.m. for Burgers & Dogs off the grill, music and fun for all. Our Men and Women have given so much for our Country, we want to give them a little back with an awesome car/truck show. They look forward to seeing October roll around, knowing our Coast will be filled with all those beautiful vehicles. Seeing these classic cars brings back many memories for them along with putting smiles on their faces, and we do love making our Residents happy. They deserve all and more. We would like to give a big salute not only to our Veteran Residents but to all the Men and Women who have served to make America home of the free and land of the brave. Hope you can join us for this wonderful occasion. Thank You and hope to see you there. Sincerely, Life Enrichment Director, Darlene Anderson. Boyington Nurisng Center, 1530 Broad Avenue, Gulfport Ms. 39501, questions please call , 228-864-6544 or 228-493-9349 Jimbo, Some say there is no difference between COMPLETE and FINISHED. I’d like to explain the difference between COMPLETE and FINISHED in a way that is easy to understand. When you marry the right woman, you are COMPLETE. But, when you marry the wrong woman, you are FINISHED. And when the right one catches you with the wrong one, you are COMPLETELY FINISHED!. Becka Jimbo, The writing on 3rd. column of page 9, of 9/19 Gulf Coast MotorSports magazine states: "Coal industries will go away. Gasoline/oil companies will go away. Drilling for oil will stop." This quote is silly. It's just hogwash. Reddy Kilowatt was a cartoon character electric companies used in the 1950's to convince folks that electricity was ready to improve their lives. Reddy Kilowatt does not live in our house wires behind the electric receptacles, Electric power must be generated at power plants, transmitted on high voltage transmission lines, transformed at substations to lower voltage, distributed by local electric utility companies, and finally metered to customers (like Dunkin' Donuts so they could give it away to their customers who are driving electric vehicles -- they won't, it's a gimmick). Key phrase: Electric power must be generated. How is that done? In reality, Energy Information Agency, a US Government agency, reported that US Electricity Generating capacity in 2018 by fuel type was, more or less-65% coal and natural gas 20% nuclear 15% renewables Renewables included about 7% hydro, about 7% wind, and the rest was solar, geothermal, etc. Please note that hydro and wind are limited to places where waterfalls and breezes persist. Suitable locations have already been developed for hydro and wind powered

electric generation. New sources of renewable electricity, like solar, will be costly, rare, and inconvenient. There was a saying in the 1960's that nuclear power would be too cheap to meter. Not so. Electric companies went broke building nuclear plants. Sites for nuclear plants are gone. Nuclear powered electric generation growth is unlikely. Everyone is scared of nuclear, for good reasons. If we need more electric power in the next 25 years, growth potential is for more natural gas powered electric generation plants. And, coal powered generation could "come back" to higher previous levels. Natural gas has displaced coal in about 15% of generating capacity over several years. If the US went for more electric power, we could generate 20% more, with new natural gas plants and recommissioned coal plants. Would that be enough power to electrify all vehicular applications now fueled by oil? No. Coal comes from mining. Natural gas comes from drilling wells. We are doing much drilling. We can do more mining. It would be silly to make enough more coal and natural gas fueled electricity to displace the oil fueled US transportation industry. Coal and oil companies will not go away. Drilling will not stop. Fossil fuels won't go away. Fossil fuels are cheap, abundant, convenient. As Johnny Carson used to say, "I kid you not." Thanks. Mendal Yoho (once engineer, not anymore, old, retired, drives a 1930 Ford with original engine/trans). Jimbo, I was watching my grandson as he opened the big family Bible sitting on the table in the den. He seemed quite fascinated as he slowly fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he had discovered was an old tree leaf that had been pressed in between the pages. “Mawmaw, look what I found,” he called out. “What have you got there, dear?”, I asked. With astonishment in his voice, he answered, “I think it's Adam's underwear!” abbylynn1985@ Good Morning, Jimbo, As a guy who spent most of his working life in the print business, please let me commend you on an outstanding job with “Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine!” The content of your publication is above reproach. I know that filling up 100 pages is not easy, and making it all balance is an art, which you folks have mastered well. I worked for “Hot Rod,” “Car Craft” and “R&C” for 7 years and wrote for many books after that, and I can't remember any of them having 20 features in one edition. Congratulations on that. Nice, too, to see that Joel Osteen is a contributor. What kind of rod does he cruise in? I especially enjoy all the tech articles, drags, cruise-in's and shows you cover, and the magnificent street machines from the Southeast. I'm thinking I need to get my gang to consider Cruisin' the Coast and a few more of those for our future plans. Heck, I spent an hour looking over the ads - yeah, even the little ones in the back. For a car guy, they're as entertaining and informative as some of the feature writings, like Nana's Nomad on pages 24 and 25. Finally, Jimbo, please pass along my kudos to your managing editor and paste up folks. The layout, overall and individual pages, of “Gulf Coast MotorSports” is top-shelf and really adds to the excitement of the publication. So, from another little guy, please accept my thanks and commendation for a “Job Well Done!” Buddy Merrick Denison, Texas Geezzzz Buddy, them are some kind words… your reward is in the mail.. I have been wide open with the new job in Mobile, AL. I’m staying in Perdido Bay, FL until I find the house I want to live in in Mobile, thanks brother! I love the area, but I have to get up Monday through Friday at 5 am and drive 70 miles to work and 70 miles back home so it makes for a 12 hour work day. I am such a creature of habit, the new place, the long drive, the new job…I haven’t completely settled in yet and probably won’t until I get settled in in Mobile. But right now I’m a block from the Perdido Bay and the fishing is good. Cruisin The Coast is here…wow! It came so fast this year. Plans have changed, Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show will not be performing for the Kickoff of Cruisin The Coast this year at View The Cruise. I had confirmed with a City of Gulfport official, however the director of the event had different plans. It seems I was competing with the entertainment acts and stages with unfair competition. We were there for the cruisers. However, we will be performing Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the MS Coast Coliseum, and since I now live in Perdido Bay, FL and work in Mobile, AL they’ll be putting me up at Margaritaville Beach Hotel, so that should be a blast. Cruisin The Coast is a first class event, always! Since CTC is on top of us, I am already looking forward to Emerald Coast Cruizin in Panama City Beach, FL. If you have not gone to this show, now is the time! The perfect follow up to Cruisin The Coast. Any, any excuse to visit PCB, FL is awesome and Emerald Coast Cruizin has an incredible show planned, packed with great entertainment all in one venue. This year’s theme is Hot Rods by the Beach, the dates are November 6-9. This year, The Rip Chords will be in concert, with great hits songs like Hey Little Cobra, 409 and Three Window Coupe. Todd Allen Herendeen will be back with his great Elvis Tribute Show. We’re excited to have Margo Anderson performing this year also.
Also going on at the same time at a different part of the show grounds will live Pro Wrestling. Bring your lawn chairs. Headlining the two hour Wrestling Show will be Ricky Morton of the famed Rock N Roll Express taking on the WWE’s Barbarian, managed by Randy Rose of the original Midnight Express. Also on the show will be Manny The Raging Bull Fernandez and Jimmy The Boogie Woogie Man Valiant, plus a ton of young wrestling stars from Ricky Morton’s School of Wrestling. Celebrities, many for this show…Joe and Amanda Martin, along Pompa from the MotorTrend Hit TV Show Iron
6
Resurrection will be there, along with Butch Patrick, Eddie Munster from the 1960’s TV Show The Munsters with a couple of his Munster mobiles. From The hit TV Show Happy Days… Potsie will be there, Anson Williams along with

Ralph Malph, Donnie Most! Also The World’s Shortest Person will be there, Jyoti Amge, just 19 inches tall, can you imagine? I’ll get to interview all these stars so you get to re-live their stories before getting your photos and autographs. There will be a Swap Meet, Cruiser Parade, Cruiz-ins, Block Party, $10,000 Cash Give Away, Dinning for Dollars, check out VIP Event Parking, call now for details and a MEGA 50/50. Good beach hotel rates are still available for the show as low as $69 per night at Palmetto Inn & Suites. Also show rates at the Wyndam Vacation Rentals, Seahaven Beach Resorts, Sunnyside Beach & Tennis Club. The show is on the beach behind Pier Park in Aaron Bessant Park. Follow the show on emeraldcoastcruizin.com or Emerald Coast Cruizin on Facebook. For show details call (662) 587-9572. I’m finishing up the season announcing stock cars at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, AL. It has been fun, but I have to think long and hard whether I want to do it again in 2020. I have been helping out an old friend and it’s been fun, but it is sure nice having full weekends again. I love this time of year, the cooler temperatures, as least coming soon, the fall car shows and fall fishing. I have been catching some Red Fish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum and Flounder already. 17 FOREVER is a way of life, you really never have to grow up! I’ll see everyone at Cruisin The Coast and Emerald Coast Cruizin!

The name George Trosley may not be instantly recognizable to some of our Gulf Coast MotorSports readers, but to some of us, his cartoons and teeshirts are. To all of you, who have become familiar with George Trosley's work from the pages of CARtoons, Hot Rod Cartoons, Street Rodder, Car Craft, Popular Hot Rodding, Super Chevy, Street Truck, Kar Kulture Deluxe, Rod and Custom, Street Scene and many more. Trosley is the creator of Krass & Bernie, a comic strip which ran continuously in CARtoons from 1975 until that magazine's last issue in August 1991. Trosley also produced many other features for CARtoons, including a regular "How To Draw Cars" instructional series. This book contained many of these "How To Draw Cars" articles, titled Trosley's How To Draw Cartoon Cars. Since May 2005, new episodes of Krass & Bernie have been printed in Car Craft. Some issues of CARtoons contained two or three separate Krass & Bernie stories. He is one of the regular contributors to CARtoons Magazine, Hot Rod cartoons and CYCLEtoons for Petersen Publishing.
George Trosley began drawing cartoons at the tender age of five. Professional cartooning came 17 years later. Trosley's more than 30 years of humorous renderings are an illustrated slice of Auto-Americana. A free-flowing style and right-on appreciation of the human condition is what attracts automobile magazine editors to George's work. A master at composition and line quality. George has his finger on the pulse of the car-crazy community in all its rabid devotion and peculiarities. It's most likely due to the fact that George often illustrates his personal passion for automobilia. He can instantly relate what's funny about his own unusual habits, as well as that of other car nuts. Here's what George has to say about himself and his profession: I was born in 1947 to hard-working, middle-class parents, George and Hazel, from Woodlyn, Pennsylvania. As a middle child, I grew up with my older sister, Beverly, and younger brother, Harold. I'm told I was drawing from the time I could hold a crayon. Mom claims she could always keep me quiet with a pencil and a piece of paper. My forth grade teacher, Mrs. McLauglin, was an amateur artist who noticed my inclination and recommended private art lessons from a local painter, which my parents, provided until I hit my teens. Cars were always a major interest for my brother and me and we drew our "dream machines" all the time. We also built model cars while growing up. I could come up with wild customizing ideas and used plastic wood to mold parts from one kit to another. My brother had the patience and body-working talent to turn them into prizewinning creations. Car magazines like R&C constantly fed us fresh
8

concepts and current styles, and we ate 'em up. We began winning almost every hobby-shop model contest around- and were eventually banned from a few. Before long we had our drivers licenses and real cars to fool around with. My first car was a '47 Plymoth sedan that leaked a quart of oil a day and smoked two more out the tailpipe. That was followed by a '55 Ford Tudor with a 312ci T-Bird engine and trans., and a severe rake. I lettered "Village Vandal" on the trunk lid, much to my mom's grief. I graduated from high school in 1965 and was accepted to the Hussian School of Commercial Art in Philadelphia. I commuted in my recently acquired '39 Ford Deluxe Tudor sedan and spent the next four years learning about commercial art by day, and the workings of a prewar Ford by night. After art school, I landed jobs in various art studios in Philadelphia but found much of the work unrewarding and repetitious. in 1973, I jumped out on my own to give full-time freelance cartooning a try. I'd always been a major fan of Pete Millar and Petersen CARtoons, so I dropped it into gear. Eventually, editor Dennis Ellefson gave me the opportunity to do some of my reoccurring characters. I created Krass and Bernie, largely patterned after my brother and me. They ripped apart and rebuilt tons of wild rods for the next 20 years...and I loved it! During this period I also produced hundreds of cartoons and humorous illustrations for various other car magazines including Rod & Custom. My other work has been published in a variety of magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Saturday Review, National Enquirer, New Woman, and Hustler. Unfortunately, I sold the '39 when I began freelance cartooning. My long-time girlfriend, Susan, and I married in 1973, and after buying a house, bought a '40 Ford Deluxe Tudor sedan to work on too.
In 1977, our daughter, Andrea, was born and we sold everything to buy a bigger house on a small lake in Riddley Park, Pennsylvania. In 1989 our son, George III, was born and a new studio was added upstairs with skylights and a balcony overlooking Ridley Lake. I've been thinking it's just about time for another prewar Ford and Georgie thinks it oughta have flames.... The kid's got it !!

We had almost back to back vacation trips planed this summer. So, after a week of rest from the Nebraska/ South Dakota trip we were off to Louisville Kentucky for the 50th edition of the Street Rod Nationals. To say that this is a really big show is an understatement. There really is too much to see in just 4 days. Our first day we spent mostly indoors cruising up and down the rows of vendors and their displays. More like man stuff shopping I like to call it. I found some interesting items, and some new and improved gadgets, of course all of which are marketed for us gearheads. After the first day there, the remainder of our visit was all just a blur. We roamed around outside aimlessly looking at as many cars and trucks as our feet and legs would allow. We also met up with many old friends and some Misfits members as well. Also on one of our days we took a guided tour of the Historic Churchill Downs. I was quite impressed by the age and history of that place. I highly suggest you stop in and take a tour if you are ever in Louisville. I did make a few parts and pieces purchases for the Big Truck Project while in Louisville, all to aid in its further steps to completion. I'm not sure when that may happen but the end is getting nearer. Kind of like a dim light at the end of a very long tunnel. With the help of my brother, (uncle Bob) we have begun the task of getting things in the doors repaired and replaced, so I may one day prime, paint and get them reinstalled. I do so look ahead to one day taking a shake down ride in the neighborhood. Latches and window mechanisms and their connecting links are a real nightmare for me anyway. This kind of stuff is not one of my strong suits, and I readily admit that. I liken it to reaching blindfolded inside of an open knife and broken glass filled small box, searching for a

dropped thumbtack. One is going to get scraped cut or nicked more than once. Wish me lots of luck and many band-aids. So, Cruising the Coast is definitely out of the question for this truck this year. Back to Louisville, I was really impressed with the Professional Builders Show Case vehicles. The level of execution and attention to detail was over the top, as it always is. Using newer motors and transmission setups has become the norm it seems. Custom one-off parts and pieces, beautifully executed paint schemes, and plush beautifully sculptured upholsteries are also the norm for these works of roiling art. Many of which I am sure the owners spent in the high six figure category. I am glad these folks build these kinds of cars, they give the rest of us ideas, and unknowingly provide us with drive to do our cars and trucks at a much higher level too. Since it is now October, the big thing down this way is getting underway. Yes, its Cruising the Coast, another fun filled week of everything automotive. We can drive em, go slalom them or just park and watch, at several different venues. We can go listen to our favorite bands at most any venue too. There will be racing at the track and flame throwing at the casino and also sanctioned burnouts at one site. If you are a registered participant and get lost or need a little help, may I advise you to look for the folks wearing the Bright Yellow Staff shirts they can more than likely assist you. Most all of them are car folks and various club members, many of which volunteer year after year for this 30 plus mile long block party, to provide you the cruiser huge amounts of fun with cars. I might add, give them a big thanks for helping to make this event happen. Next thing you know it will be Halloween, don't let the goblins ruin your cruising. The Cole Report Started the month out at a new 3rd Friday night cruise in at Arby's in Waveland. They had 21 classics show up and hang out. We made our every Thursday Silver Slipper Casino car bike and jeep nights. They've had good turnouts all year at these cruise ins. Next stop was the 4th Saturday cruise in with the Boulevard cruisers in Picayune had 70 plus cars/trucks at this one. The next stop was the finally Friday cruise in on Jeff Davis Ave in Long Beach. This one gets 80 to 100 rides out cruising, eating and listening to the live band. The big event was the Gasser blowout at Gulfport dragway. The track was full of Gassers, Hotrods, dragsters and lots of people having a good time. One of the hottest days of the year at the track and they still were able put on a great show with lots of action. Jessie Holmes and all the racers really kept everybody entertained. We finished out the day at Edgewater Mall for the Coast Cruizers cruise in with 75 cars/trucks come hang out. Just cruise and remember to watch for our friends out riding their bikes also. ‌. Al

By: Amy Cross Joyce and Michael Lachaussee are on vacation and she asked me to stand in for her this month. We had wonderful weather this morning. The sun was shining and not too hot. There were 36 cars that showed up. I decided to showcase some of the trucks that helped make the show what it is. This is only a sample of the vehicles that were here. Come join us, rain or shine each second Friday of the month at Hardee’s in Lucedale from 7:30 til the last story has been told. We are not a car club, have no meetings, no dues and no work! You don’t even have to have a vehicle to participate. So come cruise in with us for some great fun, breakfast and coffee.
Darrell Gibson was here in his 1966 Ford. He has installed a diesel motor in it. He sounds like the UPS truck coming to drop off goodies.
Bill Adams was in his 1953 Ford truck. It has a Chevy running gear in it. He said the best thing about it is the air conditioner cools real good.
LaRue Flurry was in his 1951 Ford. He has owned it since 1971. He redid it about 2 years ago. The paint is wine red with metal flake.
Last but not least is Melvin Howard and his 1936 Chevy. He has owned it about 2 years.

Later in life, Blaine started his own business and when it flourished in 2013 he purchased his perfect project truck, which is the same model as his first truck. With the help of Barry Barone of B&B Motorsport in Picayune, Mississippi he has fully restored his 1978 pickup. B&B Motorsports restored and installed his 427 Ford Cobra stroker engine with 625 horsepower, 600 lbs of torque and fuel injected by FAST. Barry and his team also installed an American Powertrain 5 speed standard transmission and all wiring from American Auto Wire. This truck is also equipped with Vintage Air A/C to keep him cool in the Louisiana heat. Barry painted the flawless body black with all PPG Supplies. The bed of the truck was customized to receive the wide tires with American Racing Rims. Although this is a vintage truck, there is a custom added sunroof for a little extra updated flare. You can find Blaine at this year's Cruising The Coast to see his gorgeous piece of art cruising around. If you are not able to make Cruising The Coast, we still have you covered. Just follow Barry Barone on his Youtube Channel and subscribe to watch a video with more detail of this truck and other vehicles he has restored. If you have a vehicle you are looking to restore, please feel free to contact Barry at B&B Motorsports at (601) 749-8517. Model in the photos is Victoria Harvey who works with Barry not only in this photoshoot but also at car shows. Come meet Barry and Victoria in person at the Vicari Auction at Cruising the Coast October 10th through the 12th at the Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi. Photography, hair and make up for model were done by Jamie Walthour.

Welcome Back Automotive painting enthusiasts. This month OVERSPRAY is on a funky challenger hood that will be showcased at cruising the coast this year so look for it if you are local. I decided to try to do a freehand piece for the masses instead of tricks but it is pretty hard to teach without being right beside me. Just remember that nothing comes easy that’s ever worth it. You will have to put blood and sweat into it. As for example; this hood easily took over sixteen hours so never give up!!! Enjoy!!! - JOHN 4. After I got the body where I wanted it I started with the wings and once again in white. I did a mirror image of wings because my brain works better with that and the form of hood made it work better as my composition. 5. Now it is time for my reduced black again. Then it is time for my white. Back and forth when I do the dance of shades. It takes a while but in the end it is well worth it. 6. Now here is the cool stuff. I made about 3 ounces of the car paint which is called PLUM CRAZY and over reduced it making it super transparent. The color has pearl and flakes so it will give his body a cool shimmer in direct sun. I always test my reduced paint before I touch my project. When testing went ok I apply lightly over all the art and tint everything I did prior to this purple hue. Overspray from the purple is everywhere but will make a cool effect behind him so I take my black and start re-working the ENTIRE piece where I see it is needed. Then a few white highlights as well. 7. I used my micro grunge stencil to add detail in the entire piece
1. First things first. As you know this piece had to be prepared and ready for my work. This is a collaboration piece with PRECISION PAINT & BODY and myself so it made my life a little easier. I started by printing out many reference pictures. I then used a stabile pencil to lightly sketch on my canvas and give me reference points. After I had a basic shape I began with my white and started slowly getting the shades in order. I never stopped looking at my reference pics. I even blew some up bigger to get detail. 2. After my white is ok I pick up my reduced black and go the other way with my design. Darkening in shadows and helping it become more defined. 3. Once again I picked up my white and repeated the process over and over till I was happy with it. I call it a battle of black and white. I couldn't really tell you how many times I went back and forth but it was surely a lot. Paint covers paint so just go back and forth until it is just right for you and your clients wishes. Walk away if you have to. Sometimes it will all start to blur and you will go cross eyed if at it too long. Trust Me!!

with black and give the creature texture in all areas. I also used my big rotting stencil for areas bigger like the wing folds and
chest ect. Make sure you are light because you definitely can over do it. Then I added a few more highlights and shadows. 8. I skipped the green flame portion to keep this article as short as possible but I covered flame theory before in a prior issue. If you would like a copy feel free to contact Motorsports Magazine and I am positive they will help you out. Ok back to the basics… I did a skull in flame first but the customer changed his mind into the MOPAR logo so it was done. Remember that new paint covers old paint so changing something is not as hard as your brain makes it seem. I measured and cut a Mopar logo and before placing it I wanted to have a little fun with it. I cut little tiny strips of trash vinyl and just started placing them everywhere to give it a grunge feel. Then I cut up the Mopar “M” and it ended up looking cracked. When I was done it looked pretty cool and I knew it would work out perfectly. 9. So I cleaned my area pretty good and placed my stencil. I used not so much reduced black to the piece so my coverage was good. I let that flash off until dry and then added white to just the tops of the 3d elements in the Mopar emblem. Think 3d and always think gravity when painting. If you do it all the time it will just become second nature to you but you won’t always use the method. It is just a very
18
OCTOBER 2019
good habit. Ok now that you have your white highlights in areas you want. I then use same reduced green to tint them the color of flames. After that’s done I go back with a very small portion of white. This will give it a “glowing” feel and that is exactly what I am going for. Hot to the touch! 10. Finally I get to pull it off and see where we are. It looks good and I am happy with it. It looks hot, it looks a little hazy. That is where I was headed with it. I decide to grab my black and fine tune it a little more here and there and of course once again, white highlights. It is a constant battle of the shades I’m telling you. Back and forth constantly. 11. Now it is time to clear this bad boy. We used a waterborne cleaner so it wouldn’t effect the artwork. Wax and grease is a little harsh and can lift your solvent base products if your not careful. Sometimes wax and grease works fine. Test an area before you just go crazy or you will be learning more lessons on your journey early on. 12. Jason Marshall who is the head painter at Precision cleared it three times and let it rest a day. Then he added 2 more coats for the final and in the end it turned out great. As of now the hood is mounted on the car and I just received the trunk to do another scene for the client. If you are from the Gulf Coast be sure to look for this Plum Crazy purple classic challenger and give it a close look. It turned out great . Thanks again! See you next month!! -JOHN

www.facebook.com/xoxocandycocktail on Instagram @candycocktail This month's article coincides with my favorite holiday of the year, Halloween. Bringing with it spooky witches, spiders and skeletons, all of which the featured artist of this month has put her own unique and sexy spin on with bewitching pinups. The October artist, known as Ruttu, has made a name for herself creating Betties and monsters. The illustrator of the rockabilly artwork known as Ruttu is Alejandra Oviedo, a graphic designer from Bogotá, Colombia. Alejandra is a longtime lover of old cartoons, horror movies, vintage sleaze magazines and postcards. Alejandra has been drawing since she was a child, when she loved to replicate the drawings displayed on the posters or tv shows that she watched. Then just around five years ago she started to draw with the idea of possibly being an illustrator. She soon came to the realization that people liked what she was doing, adding, “I never imagined that!” In the years since then, this self proclaimed mid century enthusiast has stayed busy creating pieces and products with that “mid century” feeling, parallel to commissioned pieces people ask her to do, and now here she is. She is slowly trying to move from graphic design and the corporate clients she has in Colombia, to her true passion and dream job; the thing that she wants to do for the rest of her life. Stating that she has only been shaping her own style for a relatively short time, Alejandra said, “I used to draw just for myself and a couple friends. I started to draw very young and learned some techniques at college, but I am still learning, and I hope my skills keep growing always.” This artist does a lot of doodles, describing how she feels comfortable drawing about topics she likes and people relate to that in different ways. Which coincidently is how Oviedo had the luck of meeting the owner of the Vampira Brand. Additionally, she has had the opportunity to meet singers like Jesse Jo Stark as well as other bands in the US, Mexico and Argentina. Ruttu features vintage designs and even a new series inspired by neon signs. Quite remarkably she recently had the big honor of being featured in Playboy's Social Networks. Plus she has some top secret artworks she is currently working on that will be online very soon! The Ruttu Etsy store has art prints, stickers, buttons, purse mirrors, varsity jackets & t-shirts available for purchase. For your own custom or exclusive Ruttu artwork, she is now open for commissions. If you would like more Ruttu art, you can download her wallpapers, which are available for free on her Facebook page. Ruttu spoke about her art, adding, “I love and enjoy drawing naughty girls. For me, a girl can be everything, and appear like a good girl but also a naughty Bettie. The best part for me is when someone feels or identifies with my characters, no matter what shape it has.”

The Witch’s Knot by Kristen Kovatch Jessie looped the lead rope back over her shoulder as she double-checked the chain on the gate by feel, her eyes following the pale shape of the thin horse they had named Gold Dust as he ambled away into the night to find his pasture-mates. She volunteered three nights a week at Rainbow Horse Rescue, savoring the moments spent helping horses find their feet again as she saved up money for a horse of her own thanks to a decent day job she had luckily landed right out of college. Satisfied that the gate was secure, she was about to turn back towards the brightly-lit barn when a voice out of the darkness made her jump. “He’s looking better already.” Sarah, the proprietor of Rainbow, emerged out of the rapidly-falling night to nod towards Gold Dust’s pasture. Jessie fell into stride next to Sarah and the two women headed into the bright barn together, Jessie to hang up the halter and lead and Sarah to check on the few residents currently stalled. Whenever the conditions were right, Sarah liked to have the rescued horses living out full-time, believing that the horse was designed to move freely and socialize with his friends in order to recover from whatever path had brought them to Rainbow. A few of the more delicate cases were currently stalled — Jasper, a pony recovering from the removal of a cancerous tumor in one eye, and Burgundy, a lanky Thoroughbred mare bouncing back from an abscess. “He is looking better,” Jessie agreed, referring to Gold Dust. “It just breaks my heart, though… how could someone do that to a horse?” The aged gelding had arrived six weeks prior, nearly skin and bones with overgrown hooves and a matted mane. After his quarantine and introduction into the gelding herd, he had started picking up weight considerably. “It took me forever to comb out those dreadlocks. I can’t believe no one loved this horse. He’s a sweetie.” Sarah, satisfied that both Jasper and Burgundy were situated for the night, turned to Jessie with a smile. “It’s easy to hate, isn’t it? You never heard where Gold Dust came from.” Jessie sighed inwardly. Sarah, for all the horrible things she had seen in running Rainbow for the past two decades, was somehow still as patient as a saint. “He was owned by an old couple, and it was the husband who did most of the work in the barn. Gold Dust was their last remaining horse, and the husband still came out every day and groomed him until he gleamed even though he was too stiff and old to ride. And then the husband had a stroke, and in the weeks of hospital stays and eventually hospice at home, poor Gold Dust was forgotten. After the funeral, the wife called us for help, and she cried and cried when we came to take the horse away. He was the last living link to her husband.” Jessie felt a flush rise in her cheeks, a little embarrassed now that she had grumbled about someone intentionally starving the horse. “Well… she should have called sooner,” she offered, not meeting Sarah’s eyes. Sarah smiled and eased herself down onto a hay bale at the edge of the feed stall. “Do you know the story about the first horse I rescued here?” Jessie shook her head, silently seating herself on the floor at the base of Burgundy’s stall door. She felt the mare’s warm breath on the top of her head and slowly reached a hand up to stroke the horse’s muzzle. “There was no rescue in this county for large animals,” Sarah began. “So I was shocked one night, after doing the night feeding for the two riding horses I kept here in this barn, when the cops drove up and wanted to talk to me. They had a horse that needed help and they were looking for someone to take it in and take care of it. They thought it was a long shot since they knew most folks around here didn’t have much to spare to take in another horse to feed, but I thought I could make it work. And that’s how Lucky made his way here.” “He was skinny as a rail, and his feet were long, and his mane was all tangles, just like Gold Dust. And I was just like you. I spent hours coming out those twists and knots, carefully grooming his shabby coat, watching as with the good feed carefully applied and the love and attention, he bloomed again into a handsome fellow. I ended up keeping him, but that got the ball rolling on turning this place into a rescue and helping horses out of bad situations and into good homes.” Jessie smiled, while wondering what this story had to do with Gold Dust. “The funny thing was with Lucky, every morning when I went out to feed, he’d have those tangles all twisted up in his mane again.” Sarah looked sideways at Jessie. “Didn’t you comb out Gold Dust’s mane the first day?” Jessie nodded, a bit defensively. “Well, he was all tangles again the next day. Lots of horses here get those tangles. You know. You spend enough time grooming them and making them feel loved again.” Sarah had a point, Jessie realized. There WERE a lot of tangled manes to contend with. Sarah chuckled and looked down at the floor, twisting a stray piece of hay between her fingers. “They’re probably just from the wind. But legend calls those witch’s knots. If you see them in the morning, it means a witch came and visited that horse in the night.” Normally, Jessie would have laughed. But there was something about Sarah’s tone, her lack of eye contact, that made the hairs on the back of Jessie’s neck stand up. “I was like you then,” Sarah continued. “I was so angry at whoever had done this to poor Lucky. He was just a horse, he had no say in the matter, and someone had treated him like garbage and basically left him to die. The cops never really told me much information about where Lucky came from, but after enough years of me pestering them for more information — he was a lovely ride when I finally got (Continued on page 22)

around to saddling him up — they told me the whole story. “Lucky had been owned by an older woman who lived all alone, down on that Granite Hollow road — you know the one?” Jessie nodded. “Local lore said that the lady that lived there was a little odd, liked her privacy. The kids used to try to creep each other out with stories about the haunted old hag that lived back there. Usually though, people driving by never thought much about the little house tucked into the woods. But they did notice the pretty dark bay horse in the pasture that would stand in the shade on a summer’s day and watch the cars go by. And they noticed when he got skinny, and someone finally called the police when he was really far gone and the ground was all covered in snow and there was no more grass for him to eat. “The police came by the house and found it empty. Almost like it was abandoned. But nothing was missing — there were dirty dishes in the sink, laundry in the basket. But no sign of the woman at all. It was like she had just disappeared. They searched the property and found nothing — just a quiet little homestead all covered up in snow. “When they brought a dog around, he found her. It looked like the woman had maybe gone out to feed one day and slipped and fell and broke her hip, and didn’t have a cell phone to call for help. The saddest part to me was that they figured out — I dunno how — she had tried to drag herself along for a ways… but not towards the house. She was trying to get to the barn. Like she knew the horse needed her. And the cold must have finally done her in.” Jessie sat in silence, a heaviness in her chest. “Well.” Sarah said after a moment. “I felt pretty badly about my unkind thoughts. And I made a vow the day I finally got that whole story to withhold my judgment. Every horse that’s come through this barn has a story, and sometimes those stories will break your heart… but not always in the way you expect.” Sarah smiled to herself before rising up off the hay bale, offering Jessie a hand to pull her to her feet. “I don’t say it enough, but thank you for your help around here, Jessie. This place wouldn’t run without volunteers.” The pair moved down the aisle together, Sarah flicking off the lights as they headed to the big barn door. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, Jessie could make out the shapes of the gelding herd in the pasture adjacent to the barn, the pale presence of Gold Dust among them. For a moment, Jessie stared, trying to identify a darker, smaller shape among the horses before shaking her head. It was nothing. “Look for those witch’s knots tomorrow,” Sarah said quietly, making Jessie jump again. “We’re not the only ones watching over these horses.”
The Golden Age! In my research, I have noticed a lot of things that occurred during my lifetime are said to have been in The Golden Age and are referred to in that way. What is this Golden Age? One dictionary refers to this as: “the most flourishing period in the history of a nation, literature, etc.” Another says: “the period in life after middle age, traditionally characterized by wisdom, contentment, and useful leisure.” Merriam-Webster refers to it as: “A period of great happiness, prosperity, and achievement.”, and yet another source states: “A time period when activity or skill was at its peak.” I am no longer middle aged. I have skeedaddled way past that. That would put me in the period of life after my middle years. Am I to believe, therefore, that I am wise, content and useful? Let me ponder that for a moment! I don't feel comfortable dismissing this yet, so I am going to use the definition: “A period of great happiness, prosperity, and achievement.” I was extremely happy during that time period, and I was hell bent on achieving things. My family was not prosperous, and neither were my friends or relatives. Is one out of three good? For the purposes of this article, The Golden Age is a time when campers were becoming popular and at a surge in popularity. In 1937 a deluxe model travel trailer cost $8,000.00. That would be equivalent to $118,000.00 today. The attraction for these small, movable homes was just that…they could be moved at the whim of the owner to any part of the country. The cars being developed were powerful enough to pull them with ease. These were the original “Tiny Houses”. The women had less work to do around the house, because the house was so small.
The history of the travel trailer in the United States can be traced back to the 1920's, when those who enjoyed their use were referred to as “Tin Can Tourists”. As the years progressed trailers became more functional and livable, they became known as the house trailer. Trailer parks in 1937 charged $1.00 per week and $.25 for electricity. This made traveling affordable. The 1930's were known as the decade of the house trailer. Hundreds of manufacturers began to make (usually in small numbers) travel trailers. The smallest were known as teardrops. The larger one had various names.

There is only room for a few photos of these Golden Age treasures (in this article), so I have chosen to feature the 1941 Brooks Stevens Western Flyer Motorhome. This was designed by famed industrial designer, Brooks Stevens. He was born during 1911 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but contracted polio when he was a young man. He found that drawing and sketching relieved his bedridden boredom. The 1941 Western Flyer Motor Home is a streamline design that looks like a fast rocket even parked. The huge front grill, split windshield, and headlight pods were reminiscent of the commercial trucks of the era. The flair wheel wells and outrageous roof wing make it look like a bullet in motion. There were many daring designs that were produced during this Golden Age. Write to me at trunktalesbycubby@yahoo.com if you would enjoy more articles about these examples of unique engineering. Your input will influence future articles. Uncle Ezra says that you haven't experienced awkward until you try to tickle someone who is not ticklish!! See you on the road.

The GCMS Pit Stop flanked by Herbert Breaux of DesAllemands, LA’s 1989 Dodge Pickup and T-Van Falgout of Westwego, LA’s 1966 Ford Fairlane Saturday, September 14, 2019 started with a typical summer shower, but the rain stopped early and the 3rd Annual Combel's Customs Cruisers 3rd Annual Benefit Car Show took place without a hitch. This show raises money for No One Fights Alone, an organization which assists cancer patients with expenses not covered by their health insurance, such as travel expenses to and from treatment centers, insurance deductibles and excessive prescription costs. The idea is that cancer patients and their families have enough to worry about with battling the disease. Not being able to pay their bills shouldn't be something else they have to worry about. This year's show had a wide variety of cars and trucks and motorcycles. Antique and vintage vehicles shared parking spaces with low-riders and 3-wheelers and brand new vehicles. There was even a tow truck entered. The Cruisers were hoping to have more than 200 vehicles participate but I was unable to get an exact number who did so. Vehicles filled the parking lot of the host location and the large lots adjacent and cross the street. Even the street was parked solid. Best in Show and the People's Choice awards both went to Michael Allemand of Houma, Louisiana, for his 1955 Chevrolet 150 2 -door sedan. The black paint on that beauty has an incredible depth to it that photographs do not do justice. The Combel's Customs Cruisers work very hard all year long to raise money for worthwhile causes but this show has grown into their most profitable undertaking. Cars came as far as 207 miles (from Florida) just to be a part of this show. That interest makes us think this show will continue to grow and eventually become one of the largest in the New Orleans area.

There might have been rain outside, but inside it was Oldsmobile 88 Saturday inside Main Street Motors for this month’s Texoma Cars & Coffee! Two fully restored 88’s were on display - - and there were plenty of people there who wanted to get a look at these beauties. Both of these 88’s are from Buick’s third generation of 88 production, and both are “Golden Rocket 88’s” produced in 1957. While not Super 88’s, the maroon and silver sports a 324 Rocket V8 engine. These Rocket V8’s typically produced 277 horsepower. (That would bring some excitement to the Homecoming parade!) They were also the first models to have the safety recessed steering wheel. Personally, I love the fronts of these cars: the chrome, round headlights, wraparound bumper, and the gunsight hood ornament. Whenever I think of classic cars, these are the iconic elements which make up the ‘56, ‘57, ‘58 which rolls around in my head. While getting my fill of this bright, shiny goodness, and slurping hot coffee, I bumped into one of the local car trivia masters who was packed with fun Buick facts he was dying to share. Well, it was Buick facts or a long, blow-by-blow dissection of a CD of the 1958 World Series he had been listening to on the way over (it was Yankees over Braves for those just dying to know). I said, “Hit me with the Buick facts.” Here are a just a few: The Buick Y-job (Yep, I looked it up. It really was the car’s name), was the first “concept car” and the first to feature the waterfall grill Buick still uses today, as well as the first to have power windows. The model built for Harley Earl even had flush door handles and covered headlight, which could be opened or closed from a dashboard control. The 1962 Buick Special had the first V-6 engine mass-produced in the U.S. The 1936 Buick Century got its name by being the first Buick production car capable of travelling over 100 miles per hour. Buick produced the Hellcat M18 tank destroyer, aircraft engines, and ammunition exclusively, starting in 1943 - October, 1944, with vehicles not being produced again until 1945. Curious about this particular bit of trivia, I did a little digging and found out that not only was it true, but the Hellcat was the fastest U.S. tank, as well as the most effective tank used by the U.S. forces during World War II! Of course, there was more to our rainy morning than classic Buick 88s and unwinnable trivia duels, it’s also about finding more area car shows. Including this year’s Dia de Muertos celebration in downtown Denison. Every year this celebration features a low-rider and art car parade through downtown, as well as a low rider show, puppet parade, bounce house for the kids, and gallery walk. The is nothing quite like spending a beautiful Saturday at a car show with something for everyone! Can’t wait to see you there!

Good people, good times, and HOT temperatures were in full force for the Vintage Drag Racing Championships in Gulfport, MS! This was my first trip to Gulfport Dragway and the first thing that impressed me was the numerous trees throughout the pits. Shade in the south is more valuable than gold bars and Gulfport certainly delivered in that department. I had been a little worried about the car count because of the unseasonably hot weather, but racers from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, and Georgia started rolling in early Friday morning to get the weekend kicked off. Both the Southern Gassers and the Southern Outlaw Gassers were well represented along with numerous local Nostalgia racers. By the time the track went hot on Friday afternoon the staging lanes were filling up with a great mix of cars and lots of stories were being told around ice cold coolers! Saturday morning rolled in with plenty of heat and sun and the snow-cone stand was one of the most popular spots all day. As is the Southern Outlaw Gassers tradition, all kids were invited to take a parade lap down the track in their favorite car. This has always been one of my favorite thing about the SOG group - everyone is treated as family and we want everyone to just have FUN! Time trials began at 12:00 sharp and Jessie Holmes did a great job of keeping everyone moving down the track. Despite the 100 degree heat, the track hooked well all day and everyone made clean passes. Up-and-coming BUG, Meadow Dean, hustled all afternoon making sure drivers stayed in the groove. This was the first race where I've had the opportunity to watch Meadow and she did a fantastic job. She is definitely a BUG to keep your eyes on in the future!
Race Results Gasser - W: Shelby Berard 3 Pedal Shootout - W: Chad Etheridge Footbrake - W: Joe Taylor Jr Dragster - W: JoJo Thompson The next race coming up for the Southern Outlaw Gassers is GBO 10 at Atmore Dragway on October 17 and 18. This will be my first time covering an event for Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine and racing my car at the same time so I'm sure my next article will be a little different than normal. If you've never been to a GBO event before, please put it on your calendar and make sure to come out and spend the weekend with us! ‌‌

DIRT TRACK REVIVAL By: Chavus Holland Welcome back everyone!!! Woooohoooo!!!! What a month we’ve had!!! Here we go! Let me start off this month with this...We love the challenges of racing...that’s another one of the many reasons why we continue to do this crazy stuff! As y’all know, we started the year off mostly running only 1 track. We were leading the points there in the modified division, (by a pretty good margin) early on this season! Winning a points championship was one of our goals for 2019. What we found out was, even though we were racing, doing what we love, we weren't necessarily enjoying racing anymore! Does that make sense? I’m gonna go a little deeper...further back if you will...Chase has been racing (kart racing) since he turned 5 years old. He won his first “track championship” his first full season in racing! It was a great accomplishment, at the time, as he was competing against 10-20 kids his age every weekend! We thought it was fun and exciting! If I’m being honest, it was very stressful because you HAD to be at every single race and you could forget about having a normal life! But we worked around it and got it done! Wooohooo!...Then we go into his 2nd year of racing. We all agreed, NO POINTS RACING!!! Next thing you know Chase is accidentally leading the points! So, being the competitive family we are, we found ourselves chasing another championship! That season would be the one I’d like to forget about forever! So much DRAMA!!! It ended with fists flying and hurt feelings! As I looked at our current season, (2019) there were so many similarities to our past experience that I had to pull the plug on the whole “POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP” challenge. That’s why we have been skipping around from racetrack to racetrack! We’ve had a BLAST! I’d be lying if I told you that the drama was gone...It’s alive and well no matter where we visit! I’m realizing that is just a way of life in this day and age, no matter what your sport/hobby/activity! We’re just gonna keep on doing what we're doing and mind our own business. Now to the good stuff!!!...Let’s begin the week of August 17...We made a last minute decision to race in the HUGE annual event known as the Street Stock Nationals, hosted by Whynot Motorsports Park! It was scheduled to be a 4 day racing event, but we could only commit to the Saturday night main event. This would mean that we would miss our shot at qualifying Friday night for this race, and we might have to race a BMain to earn a starting spot in the 20-lap, $1500 to win, main event! No sweat! So we get our car ready to go and that’s when we began to notice Chase looks sick. Friday morning I kept him home from school and took him to the local Urgent care. They found that he had a 103 degree fever and is showing symptoms of the flu! He politely requested a QUICK fix from the doctor, as he told her he NEEDED to be racing the following night! (If y'all remember, he was sick on our last visit to Whynot for the State Championship Race last month!) So she gave him 2 shots in the butt and a strong antibiotic! His fever finally broke at 3:30 AM on the morning of the big race! We’re off to Whynot! This race has certainly grown since the last time I came to watch, 6 or 7 years ago! I’ve never seen so many people at a dirt track in all my life! Seriously...They had a Talladega sized crowd at this event! It was pretty well organized, especially considering the amount of cars and spectators on hand! We arrived early Saturday evening and found that there would be no B-Main because they were starting 24 modifieds and that is exactly how many were there! We would roll out last in this huge field of hot-foots from all across the South! Chase was feeling a little better as the day turned into night! We learned there would be no hot-laps or warm ups, as they needed to keep the show rolling to get it all in. They called for us to hit the racetrack around 2:30 AM Sunday morning for our feature event! I had Chase’s car tightened up, prepared for a slick surface. I told him to put her on the highside and drag the spoiler down the wall/fence as he came to the front! He listened (AT
38
OCTOBER 2019
FIRST) as he took to the topside for the first few laps and gained quite a few positions. The bottom groove was certainly the preferred line, but with 23 other cars battling for that lane, it made the top groove look like a freeway! He made his way into the top 12 and then took it to the bottom groove and played follow the leader to the checkered. I wish he would’ve kept digging up top but he felt like his car was better in the bottom at the time...After seeing the video later, he wished he would’ve stayed up top too! Oh well, that’s racing! I was signaling him at the fence during cautions but he had trouble finding me in the hundreds of people gathered around the fence! It was a blast and we plan to make this a “must race” event in 2020! We crossed the checkered in 13th place! Great night for the Young Gun! Our teammate, Jade Luzenberg, brought home 11th place and he started towards the rear as well! These cats are fun to watch. Next race- August 24, 2019... at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Alabama. We returned to the “Home of the Highbanks” with Chase, and our teammate Jade, both hungry for a win at this track! The local veteran racer jumped out front and lead the first several laps of the feature with the two young guns in tow. Jade was 2nd and Chase was 3rd. The 3 of them broke away from the rest of the pack and things began shaping up for a
Chase digging at Whynot! great battle. Jade was ridiculous fast, as Chase was doing all he could to keep up. Jade took advantage of the leader’s slight slip up and made his move for the lead! Jade took over the lead, and not to be outdone, Chase answers with a pass for the second spot on the next lap. With just two to go Jade starts to get conservative with his driving style trying not to make a mistake! This strategy finds Chase right on Jade’s rear bumper! Chase, (not wanting to show Jade his cards too early) decides to follow Jade to the white flag instead of making a challenge for the lead at that moment! Chase was anticipating a side-by side drag race to the checkered with his buddy! What neither one of them could see was the momentum they had allowed the local veteran to get coming under the white flag!!! As they head towards turn one on this final lap you could throw a blanket over all 3 cars! The veteran makes a final, desperate dive, wide open, into the corner which instantly cuts the left front tire off Chase’s car (WE’RE ON THE RIM!!) and the veteran narrowly misses spinning Jade around, as he drives over/through our front nose! Chase gathers it back up and absolutely sends it down the back straightaway into turns 3 and 4! The car rotated like a dream on that flat tire, but Chase came up a little short, as Jade came home with his first win at this track! These guys certainly gave the fans their money’s worth! 1 and 2 for the teammates! Awesome night indeed! Next race- September 7, 2019...Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Alabama. We’re back again at the “Home of the Highbanks”! Chase drew the pole and chose to start on the outside lane for the heat race. At the drop of the green there was contact with the car on the inside which cut down our left front tire...Chase came in the pits and we struggled to get the tire changed because the wheel was bent. Our pit crew wrestled to remove the mud plug but followed up with a very quick change of the tire! The rest of the pack
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
took the green flag without us! Chase came back on the track barely on the lead lap and we needed a caution...BAD!!! Chase drove his car deep into turn 1 and never picked the throttle back up as he turned her sideways and slid to a stop in an obvious intentional spin-out! CAUTION ON THE SPEEDWAY...LOL...atta-boy!!! This caution would group the pack together again and get Chase back in contention to win this thing!...And he did!!! He was on a mission! Great job buddy! Now for the Feature event...Y’all remember our last race here found Chase following his teammate Jade to the checkered! As the laps wound down in the Feature, Jade got closer and closer to Chase! It was a nailbiter for me because Jade was way faster than Chase going into the turns but ole Chase was a rocket off the corners! This made for an exciting race as these two, once again, put on a show for the fans! Chase brought home the win this time, but it was a team effort all night as we ALL showed our support for these two young guns on the front straight away in Victory Lane together! I’m starting to like this 1 and 2 thing!!! Next race-September 14, 2019...Tri-County Speedway Flomaton, Alabama. We made our first ever visit to Tri-County Speedway and man was it exciting!!! 14 of the baddest modifieds around ready to battle for the $800 to win purse on this little flat bullring track! We went out in hot laps with way too much gear in the car as Chase had her toe nailed banging the chip all the way around the track! I gotta say he looked extremely fast tho! We changed the gear and grinded a few tires and rolled out 4th in the 2nd heat race. Chase shuffled around in the pack early, before making a charge to the front where he found himself on the leaders rear bumper! Chase crossed the line under the white flag beside the leader but slightly over drove into turn one and had to settle for second at the checkered! What a race! Side by side and door to door and never touched anyone! We were excited and quietly celebrating that awesome run, amongst ourselves, as we saw the winner walking towards our pit. We both later confessed that we thought he was coming over to congratulate Chase on a great run...He wasn't though, he came up and asked Chase if he was mad? Chase (as confused as I was) said “no sir”...He then said “oh ok, because my car owner said you touched my rear quarter panel on the track. I was just making sure” We looked towards his car and could BARELY see a small ripple in the bottom of his quarter panel...I surprisingly remained calm, as I politely as possible (in a roundabout way) sent him back to his pit area! I ain’t gonna lie...these folks are testing my patience. (As most of you know, I film EVERY race Chase competes in...Chase never touched him.) Anyway...GUESS who spun out all by himself in front of the 14 car field on the first lap of the feature? Yup!!! I was cracking up!!! But what really felt good is when he got his position back, because they had not completed a full lap, so he got a second chance! It was awesome to watch Chase out drive this hotshot! Chase was beside him within a lap and all he saw was the back of Chase after that! GONE!!! He ended up crashing himself out of the race a few laps later. Chase however, was wheeling the crap out of his hot rod!!! He could put his car anywhere he needed it and had no shortage of horsepower! He raced 2 and 3 wide and NEVER touched a soul until we were coming to the white flag! Chase was in 2nd and had been trying to get past this guy out of Florida. He had a fast car, but Chase was much faster, as he tried to be patient! As they went under the flagstand with the flagman showing 2 to go he made his move. Chase ran deep into turn 1 and was planning to launch off the cushion and pass him on the highside like he had tried the lap prior. As he rocketed off the cushion he realized the guy had moved up to block the lane so Chase pointed under him and went for it! Chase never touched him and you couldn’t have stuck a hand between them as they came down the back straightaway wheel to wheel and door to door! As they approached the corner, Chase wanted to keep it clean, so he lifted just a tad so they wouldn’t door slam into the turn...the guy took advantage of the situation and instead of holding the lane he was in, (like most racers would) he turned down straight towards the skidder tires. He was out of control and
spinning his own self out and Chase locked the brakes but couldn’t avoid touching his rear bumper as he spun around! That touch, caused us to be sent to the rear with this guy who spun in front of us. If the track felt like Chase was at fault they would have given the driver his position back! They saw what everyone else saw as they made the right call. One of them racing things...I don’t get upset about these kinds of things because my driver is not perfect! He does make mistakes too, so I try to give and take on certain things. You would think some of these guys have never made a mistake in their lives! They refuse to accept blame even when it’s blatantly obvious they are at fault! Come on PEOPLE!!! They went green/white/ checkered as Chase crossed the line for the final time in 4th! The guy wanted to show Chase how angry he was so he ran up beside him after the race and revved up his engine as he pointed and flipped Chase the bird...not impressed. He came over by our trailer to speak with another driver after the races but never spoke a word towards us. Never looked our way. His wife got mouthy but that’s pretty normal nowadays. We just ignored her. I thought the guy was going to ram Chase after the race and that is where I draw the line. He didn’t..I’m good, Chase is good, and life goes on! Some race nights, when we get home and I’m drinking a cold adult beverage, I reminisce about the night we had, and I wonder, is it worth the stress? Is it worth the effort and money that I pour into this sport? Is it worth the bull that I put up with? On September 7th, the night Chase won his second career feature in the modified division, it reminded me why we keep doing this stuff! It’s an addiction! It’s a thrill that can’t be described in words! This sport will chew you up and spit you out, but you’ll keep coming back for more because when you win it’s like nothing else in this world! EVERY single night that we race I pray over Chase in his race car and beg the Lord for safety! I always pray for the Lord to be with Chase to keep him safe and if it’s in His plan to please guide Chase to Victory Lane! Well, Adrian was able to surprise us with her presence on September 7th, in Loxley, and we asked her to pray for us. With Chase buckled in his racecar, and Avery, Ruby, Adrian and myself gathered around, she did her thang! If you know Adrian, you know that you don’t have to wonder what she is thinking because she will tell you! She’s a pistol! So as she Always giving Him all the glory!!! prayed for our safety and thanked God for the many blessings in our lives, she went on to ask for God to “please let Chase win the heat and the feature race tonight!” We all kinda of chuckled, but I couldn’t help but notice the peace that came over me at that moment! The rest, as they say, is history! I hope you all are enjoying our adventures! Thanks again to all you sponsors, readers, and fans! We are having a great time doing what we love and we couldn’t do it without you all! Until next time...Chavus
