If you’re getting bored with your walls, using stencils is an easy and affordable way to add an effect without having to paint the whole room. Today’s stencil designs are trendy and fun. Large feature graphics can be applied singly or cover an entire wall, depending upon the look you want to create. And applying a stencilled design is easy: Simply choose a design that you like, print and cut it out and apply to the wall with paint. To make it ever easier, we’ve designed a stencil booklet that you can print out, enlarge, and use for decorating a wall or feature in your home.

Neutrals straddle the gap between the safer hues and the stronger accent colours. Neutrals are a blank canvas from which to build up your textures and colour. The mysterious hues of taupe continue to be a key anchoring neutral.
The theme of sustainable living takes centre stage here, and we see a shift in the focus of the green palette. Caring for the environment has become embedded in our culture and the way we do and think about things which is challenging our preconceived ideas of what is truly ‘green’.
Taupe has many subtle nuances; a colour that tends to defy precise description because of its ability to adapt to other colours and influences in the space it is used. Interior neutrals will start to trend away from cooler grey tones of previous years and instead move towards the soft beiges and nuances of cream and nude which are reminiscent of human skin tones and are soothing to the senses. 6
This underscores a move away from basic earthiness colour schemes, towards the warmth and comfort of copper browns; there is a shift from gold towards yellows, while healthy oranges and pinks pack some punch. A fusion of warmth with the green palette will see brown enhanced golds, warmed yellow greens, and rich dusty greens grow in popularity.

intrepid journey With the complications of busy modern lifestyles and the concerns of the economy and the environment we yearn to escape our daily routine. This escape is made possible with refreshing and dynamic colours inspired by exotic places and owers. Hot reds meet rust and exotic oranges, which all provide strong punctuation. With information overload the need for simplicity is being seen as vital in the emotional era of deďŹ nite likes and dislikes; this is enabling us to make strong choices, including strong colour selections when creating our own hideaways from the busy world. Strong vibrant colours encourage risk taking. Their strength is optimistic and invigorating. 7

low tide Here we see a misty soft and thoughtful cast over sectors of the green and blue palette, with frosted, pale aquatic colours. The soft focus hints towards subtle depths and lends a sense of ethereality. The feeling is cool and dominated by blues; additions of pale greens and soft putty hues complete the look. Blues are softened and diluted, moving away from strong nautical influenced shades to hues reflecting the freshwater aquatic. Frosted glass and Perspex reinforce the misty feeling of these ghost colours. The increasing prevalence of blues in the palette reflects their growing popularity. 8

Here’s how: 1. Have the pine cut to blocks of 300 x 300mm – you will need 12 blocks for a feature above a double bed. 2. Start by sanding all the blocks with 120-grit. Fill in any holes with wood filler and allow this to dry. Finish sanding with 240-grit. Wipe clean to remove any dust. 3. In a well-ventilated area, use Painters Touch to lightly spray the blocks. No more than 2 coats will be required. Allow the paint to dry properly between coats.
Don’t spend a fortune on a new headboard when you can easily transform any bedroom with this simple, affordable and stunning project.
DIY Tip: Put individual blocks on a piece of newspaper so that you can spray the front and all the sides in one go. 4. On the back of each block make a pencil mark at 150mm and 20mm down from the top. At this mark use an 8mm wood bit and your drill/driver to drill a hole to a depth of not more than 10mm. 5. To hang onto the wall use a tape measure and pencil to divide the wall into 4 x 3 squares as shown in the image. Mark the centre of each square and measure down 20mm from the drawn line. At this mark hammer in Hilti hangers and hang each block.

Old scaffolding planks have been used to create these designer pieces manufactured by Katrin Arens. You will find scaffolding planks at salvage yards - or even at your local building supply store. All that is required is sanding to remove some of the roughness - don’t remove too much or you’ll spoil the end result. 13

Distress
Distressing is an easy technique that offers stunning results wherever you use it, especially in a country cottage or farmhouse kitchen. After your ďŹ rst project you will be hunting around the home for other items to makeover! 15

I have been distressing furniture for the past 10 or so years and the principle technique has changed very little - there are just easier products to use. It’s an easy technique that - once learned - you will discover many uses for it.
You will need:
120- and 240-grit sanding paper or, Multisander and sanding pads Clean cloths Mineral turpentine Paintbrushes and foam painting pads Prominent Paints Premium Non-Drip Enamel Artists oil paint - burnt umber Clean cloths Rubber gloves
Here’s how: Preparation
Before you start you need to determine whether the cabinets have been sealed or varnished. Rub the surface with mineral turpentine. If it’s easy to clean off, it’s an oil or sealer, if the finish softens but doesn’t come off, it’s a waterbased polyurethane. If nothing comes up, it’s an oil-based polyurethane or varnish.
1. Cleaning with Woodoc steelwool and mineral turps will remove an oil, sealer or waterbased polyurethane. Sanding with 120-grit sandpaper is needed to remove anything else. Follow this by sanding with 240-grit sandpaper for a smooth surface; wipe clean and let dry. 2. For this project we used Prominent Paints Premium Non-Drip Enamel with eggshell finish (Ice Cream 0607-Y26R). Use a paint brush to apply, making sure to paint in detailing and profiling on doors. Be careful not too apply too much paint, and apply brush strokes horizontally and then vertically to smooth out brush strokes and excess paint. Apply two coats and allow to dry completely between coats. 3. Use a foam applicator to apply a small amount of burnt umber to the painted surfaces. Wipe this off immediately, leaving the colour in details and around edges to create the distressed and aged look. 4. Use a paint brush and apply enamel to any areas that need touching up. Leave to dry. 16
DIY Tip: For inexperienced decorators still afraid to take the plunge - use a Rust-Oleum Distressed Ivory kit. While slightly more expensive, this kit option allows you to tackle projects step-by-step with all products that you need supplied in the box. And believe me, the box goes a long way!

If you love the look of aged, country furniture, French Ivory and antique wood you don’t need to spend thousands on expensive antiques to get the look. All you need is some paint and a few accessories to distress your own pieces! Distressed furniture is back in fashion - did it ever go away? - and is easy to do as a do-it-yourself project. Any piece of wood furniture - even new pieces - can be given character. Though it can be quite the stress-reliever, it is important not to overdo it when it comes to distressing your wood. The aim is to achieve an antique, aged look - not to make your furniture look like it belongs in a dumpster. To get the look you want, focus on particular areas of your furniture, specifically those areas that get the most wear.

I’ve stencilled on new and used furniture, and there are advantages to both. Old furniture usually needs some cleaning up (like sanding wood or stripping off flaking paint), but you can usually find a well-made piece inexpensively. New furniture needs little or no preparation before stencilling, but you may have to spend a lot more money for a good-quality piece. For this project I used a new dresser made with unfinished solid pine. 19

Here’s how:
1. Photocopy artwork (back of this issue). Cut out all the shapes in the design with scissors. Do not cut out the eyes in animal shapes, or the holes in the flowers. 2. Roll out 30cm of contact paper, plastic-side down, taping edges to your work surface if it starts to roll up. Set several paper cut-out shapes on the contact paper, design-side down, and trace around the shapes with pencil. 3. To cut out a hole in the centre of a flower or the eye in an animal, fold the contact paper where the hole will be and cut a half-moon shape. Repeat until you have traced and cut all the shapes from the contact paper. 4. Remove the knobs from your dresser and, in an outdoor, ventilated area, spray paint the dresser knobs white. With the drawers out of the dresser, paint a coat of wood primer on the drawers with a paint roller. Let dry. 5. Paint a coat of Prominent UltraGloss - white - on the drawers. Let dry. Paint a second coat, if needed. Let dry overnight. Note: It’s important to let the dresser dry overnight; if you don’t, the contact-paper stencils might peel off the paint when you remove them later. 6. Keeping the drawers out of the dresser, tape the sides, tops, and bottoms of each drawer with masking tape. Put the drawers back in the dresser, but leave them all open about 1cm. Tape the sides of the drawers together with masking tape to stabilize them - otherwise they may shift while applying stencils and painting. 7. Loosely tape stencils in place with tape to make sure that they all fit together nicely. When you are happy with the placement, start to peel the backing off the largest pieces, and press them to the front of the drawers. Once all the large stencils have been placed, fill the spaces with smaller pieces. When a portion of a stencil runs off the edge of a drawer, fold the excess over the edge, and press it into place. 8. With the paint roller, paint over and between the stencils with Prominent UltraGloss - yellow. Let dry, and paint a second coat. If the paint is still translucent, add a third coat. Allow the paint to dry to the touch, and peel off the stencils and masking tape. Note: If the yellow paint bleeds under the stencil, it may be necessary to touch up the white areas with a small paint brush. 20

Revamp a coffee or side table with selfadhesive vinyl - a fun way to add detail to a plain coffee or side table. And when you want a change you can simply peel it off and stick on another design.

Here’s how: 1. Source photos of flowers you want to use (or draw your own freehand) and make a rough sketch of your design. 2. Measure your tables and make sure your paper is going to be big enough for your design. 3. Trace the outline of the flower onto newspaper or brown paper, then cut it out. I found using a craft knife to be faster than scissors. Use whatever tool you’re more comfortable with. 4. Tape the flower to the table to visualize your pattern and decide the size of your next flower. Make sure the tables look good from every angle. 5. Draw a line in each flower where the edge of the table is. Line up this line with the grain on the selfadhesive vinyl. Keep the veneer grain consistent throughout your project. Then tape each pattern to the self-adhesive vinyl and trace it with a pencil. 6. Cut it out the shape with sharp scissors. Use a craft knife and a mat to cut out each centre. 7. Using a ruler, mark and trim off the pieces that will be adhered to the sides of the tables. 8. For the flower that crosses over the two tables, cut it in half along the edge. Then trace and cut a duplicate of each piece. These will be adhered to the sides of the tables. 9. Erase all the visible pencil marks. 10. Trim off excess pieces. If you have any pieces that extend from the side of the table to the leg, cut at the seam so the leg will still be removable. 11. Peel of the backing and place each piece individually on your table. Press down from the centre outwards to remove any air bubbles.

This dem-ilune, or half-moon table, uses polystyrene moulding to create the effect of an expensive antique table. Once again gaining popularity as an accent piece, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to make.

Here’s how: 1. Paint the top of the table with a slightly diluted coat of white PVA to make it easier to spray later on. 2. Apply contact adhesive to the edge of the table top and the top edge of the polystyrene moulding. Leave for 15 - 20 minutes until the contact adhesive feels only slightly tacky. 3. Have someone help you with this part of the project. Starting at one side, position the polystyrene moulding against the edge of the top and very slowly curve to the shape of the half-circle. You will need to hold the starting point firmly in position whilst you gently hammer in panel pins - through the polystyrene moulding and into the edge of the table top. You can also use a clamp to keep in place, but be careful not to damage the moulding. 4. Continue to stick together and hammer in panel pins as you apply the full length of moulding to the curved top. At the end, again continue to hold whilst you firmly press along the applied curve to make sure that the moulding is firmly adhered to the top and clamp at the end. Leave this to cure completely overnight. 5. Use wood filler to fill in any gaps and nail holes. 6. Lightly sand the table top and polystyrene moulding and wipe clean. This provides a better surface for painting. 7. Mix dark wood stain with the white acrylic PVA and apply one coat over the polystyrene moulding. Allow to dry. 8. In a well-ventilated area, start spraying the entire top with Rust-Oleum Painters Touch - Kona Brown. Allow to dry between coats. You will need about three coats on the top for a smooth, glossy finish. 9. Use the Rust-Oleum Antique Gold kit on the moulding to create an aged, antique effect. Alternatively, you can use Guilders paste in gold and black to create the same effect - buff the latter to a high shine.
Adding the legs: Attach 3 legs to the underside of the table using small blocks to support the legs and add strength and stability. I also added an additional shelf lower down that was cut to fit between the legs. Sand the legs and spray with Rust-Oleum Painters Touch - Kona brown. 24

Lots of kids but short on space? A foldaway playhouse is the perfect solution. Made using shutterply - a cheaper alternative to standard plywood - shutterply is strong and durable for outdoor use (when a protective finish is applied).

DIY Tip: To extend the life of the playhouse, use Woodoc 50 tinted with a stain concentrate or gel stain in your choice of colours before assembling the playhouse and in place of the paint.

In the Garden
1. Cut the plywood to size. You can have the wood cut to exact measurement at your local Builders Warehouse. Sand the edges to remove any rough spots.
5. Lay the pieces flat on the ground when dry and attach any decorative pieces, such as tiles or shells.
2. Apply masking tape around the door, windows and roof to separate paint colours. Apply three coats of waterbased gloss.
6. Place two sets of Velcro squares on one side of each panel, 200mm from the top and bottom. Attach longer strips of Velcro to join the two panels.
3. Fix supports to the insides of the four side panels, just in from the edges. On the two end panels, fix one of the supports on the very edge of the panel.
7. Fix two hooks to the supports on each end panel. Fix two eyes at corresponding levels to a wall or fence, for the hooks to latch into.
4. While the plywood panels are quite durable, the supports will help stop the panels from warping in harsh weather. The end support is also used to anchor the house.
8. Prop the house in place, attaching hooks and Velcro for support.
DIY Tip: If you want your outdoor playhouse to last longer, put it away in a dry place when not in use.
