COASTAL STYLE
Happy New Year to you all ! I’m not quite up to speed yet, having spent most of December upgrading the website - don’t forget to try out all the new features. It was only this weekend, after several reader enquiries, that I realised I hadn’t even started on the magazine OMG. So, my apologies if this issue is a little lacking on the content side - I promise to be up to date for the next issue.

Home improvement projects don’t necessarily have to drag out for weeks. A project you can complete within a day or two is to update dreary and outdated floors with DIY-friendly laminate flooring. Available in a variety of colours and textures, laminates complement most decor styles and offer low-maintenance to suit today’s modern lifestyle. Laminates can be installed over an existing floor, sub-floor or even concrete, provided the surface is level. You don’t require any special skills or expensive tools to fit laminates and your home can sport new flooring within a day if you put in a bit of effort and some elbow grease. The clever click-lock system allows for easy installation and makes do-it-yourself flooring easy for anyone willing to allocate a bit of time to fit the floor. Glue and nails are unnecessary and the floor is ready to walk on immediately after installation www.floorsdirect.co.za. 4
Fresh looks for a new year
In our very ďŹ rst issue of Home-Dzine Online we look at fresh decorating styles for a new year. Take your inspiration from a feminine perspective, bring home a touch of coastal style, or dress your home in serene neutrals. 5
LEFT: Put a lighthearted twist on tradition with classic stripes and tailored slipcovers in pale shades. The look is both soft and sophisticated. PREVIOUS PAGE: Shades of dusty pink and ivory create a room that is feminine without being too girly. This elegant living space will appeal to the feminine side in every woman.

feminine RIGHT: A backdrop of cream and pale grey are perfect for adding splashes of colour. In this room the colours take their cue from the oral drapes and cushions.
6
THIS PAGE: Although this room is decorated in neutrals, with its white walls, cream oors and light furniture and accessories, it pops with splashes of colour. 7
ABOVE: Not afraid to experiment with colour, Interior Designer Jonathan Adler decorates a dressing room with pink walls that are accentuated with black and white accents. Metallic accents, such as a mirrored table and gilded bamboo mirror add a touch of seventies glam to the room, creating an overall eclectic setting.

New Ways with Pink For the past couple of years we have seen pink coming out of the bedroom and into living spaces. According to top interior designers, even the tiniest dose of pink will brighten any room and lift your spirits. Pink can be used in furnishings and on walls for feminine sophistication.

We’ve all experienced the beauty of the coast at one time or another; soft sand beneath your feet, collecting driftwood along the beach, the distant blue horizon and the crashing of surf. Decorating a home in coastal style allows you to evoke those feelings of sea and sand in your own home.
In our October 2011 issue of HomeDzine Online you will find step-by-step instructions to make this Bali Server. To blend in with your coastal decor, lightly whitewash and wax the wood for a natural finish.
10
A piece of SupaWood, oval mirror, shells and a glue gun are all that you need to create a one-of-a-kind mirror to decorate a plain wall. Leave it plain [below] or varnish [left] to bring out the beauty of shells washed by the tide.
An empty tea canister becomes a table lamp with the addition of a lampholder and ex cord. Display your shell collection with class - in cut glass! Add a little watered down paint to tie in with your decor.
11
Blocks of driftwood make beautiful tablescapes once painted and distressed to match your colour scheme. Three blocks of wood are roughed up and tied together with twine - so cute!
Still deciding what to do with that packet of shells you lugged back from the beach? A shell wreath hung from a window frame, or on a door, is simple to make. Keep the shells to one colour to avoid a kitschy look. 12
Dress up a plain flower pot with small shells arranged in a decorative pattern. Buy a large tube of No More Nails adhesive [exterior] and apply this to your flower pot, adding small shells as you move around. Leave to dry overnight. Fill in any blank spots with No More Nails. You can smooth out with your fingertip. 13
Take an early morning stroll along the beach front and you may be lucky enough to stumble across a piece or two of driftwood. But before you write this off as rubbish, see some of the ways to use driftwood for making your own home decor - for free!

Storage baskets are an essential element in coastal decor, plus they’re a great way to add extra storage around a home. The bigger the basket the better! To break away from the mould of blue, white and beige, add splashes of green to echo the undercurrents of surf and distant grassy knolls.
16
Painted in shades of blue, a north-facing bedroom becomes a cool, serene retreat. Painted furniture adds to the look and you can experiment with shades of ivory, beige, pale green or blue. To paint furniture, spend some time sanding down the original ďŹ nish to remove any traces of paint or varnish. Wipe clean
before painting in your choice of colour. Use a paint brush for a rustic look, or a foam roller for a smoother ďŹ nish.
Dress a bedroom in coastal style to create a space that is cool and serene.

A touch of the unexpected A salvaged window frame can so easily become the centre of attraction on a wall. You never know what you might come across when browsing salvage yards. 18
STACKED STONE WALLS
19
As I research for articles and features for the magazine there are always trends that emerge in homes around the world. One such trend is that of stacked stone veneer walls. While the idea of stone cladding for walls is not a new one, it has evolved in its style. Stone cladding or veneer has become popular as a decorative ďŹ nish for both exterior or interior walls and surfaces. Designed to be lightweight, so as to require no additional structural support, stone cladding or veneer is available as natural stone or as manufactured stone. Manufactured stone cladding uses concrete to simulate natural stone, both in texture and beauty, and is the more affordable option for many homeowners. 20
Natural Stone Veneer is made from various types of stone that are cut to a consistent thickness and have lightweight properties. Both manufactured and natural stone cladding are applied to walls with a special mortar mix or adhesive.

Metallic finish on walls, floors and furniture is once again becoming a hot decor trend. Is this a rebellion against those things we cannot afford or just a desire for more luxury in an economic climate that is anything but? At the beginning of a new decade and there’s no better time for a change. So, gather together all that dated furniture you have been hanging onto and add the metallic touch. New paint products on the market make it easy to give boring furniture a shimmering makeover, and if you don’t like it... you can always paint over it and start again! We’ve also got more metallic projects in the Crafts and Decorating sections on HomeDzine...

Add a metallic touch: Step 1 Use 120-grit sand paper to sand over the entire project. This will sort out any scratches and imperfections. Finish with 240-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. Wipe clean with a slightly damp cloth. Step 2 Apply Prominent Paints Universal Primer with a paint brush. Let dry. Step 3 Apply a base coat of Rust-Oleum Universal Silver Metallic spray paint. Do this outdoors and put down newspaper or a dropcloth - preferably not on a windy day or you will be applying spray paint forever! You want the brush strokes from the primer to show through and make it look like a genuine silver leaf finish.

Step 4 For the detailing mix a glaze with 3 parts scumble glaze and 1 part light grey acrylic craft paint to add the hand-painted scrolling detail. Apply with an artist’s paintbrush. 25

Beautiful Bougainvillea
29
If there is one thing I know for sure about Bougainvillea, it’s the fact that you don’t need green fingers to grow this climbing plant in your garden. In fact, the opposite, as Bougainvillea is a plant that requires very little attention - the less pampering the better - to provide your garden with beautiful, abundant and colourful blossoms. Leave a Bougainvillea alone and it will reach for the sky with its natural climbing habit. When occasionally trimmed, Bougainvilleas can be trained to do almost anything! As an addition to any garden, Bougainvilleas attract garden wildlife such as birds and butterflies.
30
Their blossoms are designed to entice birds and bees to take a sip of their nectar. Indigenous to South America, these fast growing climbers are grown in warm climates around the world and are especially suited to our local climate.
There are many cultivars and hybrids that you will ďŹ nd at your local nursery or garden centre - all of which add to an amazing variety of forms and colours. So easy to establish, you can grow Bougainvilleas in pots, as standards or train them to climb walls and fences. With their abundant growth they can also be used as hedges, and are great for covering pergolas and carports. There is no secret to growing bougainvilleas in the garden, in pots, or indoors, simply provide them with a good watering once a week, make sure they are planted in a sunny
spot and provide the occasional feeding with organic fertiliser. You can grow bougainvilleas indoors, providing they must be placed in a sunny spot and receive regular watering. When choosing a plant from your nursery or garden centre, pick a cultivar that will be suitable for the position. Some bougainvillea varieties are better for pruning into shape, some will grow rampant and natural looking, and some varieties are perfect for hanging baskets.
There are some that will only grow to a certain size, and are good for ďŹ tting into gaps. Speak to the staff and discuss the type of variety you need before you buy.
BONSAI BOUGAINVILLEA Because bougainvillea takes well to pruning, they are well suited as Bonsai. As the blooms begin to fade these need to be cut back to a point somewhat shorter than the desired length.
To propagate bougainvilleas, stems can be air-layered or pinned to the ground for several weeks until they will develop roots, at which they time can be cut off and re-planted or potted.

POTTED colour
Not generally a fussy plant, Bougainvillea can be grown in medium or large containers that have proper drainage and the right soil, as the plant does not like to keep it’s feet wet! Whatever container you choose, it must be large enough to hold the minimum amount of soil required for mature plants to grow in. Bougainvillea are drought-tolerant plants, and require very little water once established, which means that they are ideal for water wise gardening.
A good watering once a week is normally sufficient to keep this plant happy and healthy. If you want your plant to have form and shape, rather than growing in wild abundance, pruning and pinching bougainvillea are important to promote the greatest growth and flowering and to create shape. The more regularly you pinch, the more your bougainvillea will branch and bloom. The best time to prune or pinch is after the flush of colour or flowering cycle is completed. Flowering cycles are typically four to six weeks through the summer months. When in pots, plants should be repotted every three years. 33

WALL DECOR We show you how to create your own faux panelling on HomeDzine, now The Idea Room shows how easy it is to add detail or effect to wall panelling.
Self-adhesive vinyl is applied to the centre frames of the panels to add even more detail to walls. Simply peel the vinyl of the backing and carefully line up so that it ďŹ ts perfectly. It’s best to start at one side, or at the top, and only peel off enough backing to help you line up. As you peel away more backing use the side of your hand to smooth out from the centre to the sides to remove any air bubbles. You can purchase self-adhesive vinyl at your local Builders Warehouse, or get in touch with www.Gordons.co.za.
