Byron getting ready to meet and greet visitors at the De Wildt Cheetah Centre Hands on with a Cheetah Nancy and I were recently invited to the Bosch Media Day, which was held at the De Wildt Cheetah Centre just outside Pretoria. What a wonderful experience. It is sad that cheetahs have come to close to extinction, but good news that the De Wildt Cheetah Centre donate so much time and effort to restoring the balance. If you’re looking for somewhere to go on a weekend, I can definitely recommend http://www.dewildt.co.za for the whole family.

Windows treatments are a wonderful way to introduce another element of design into a plain room. With so many designs to choose from, blinds offer a wide variety of practical ways to dress a window, whether you want to block out sunlight or have more privacy. But not everyone prefers the look of blinds on their own and this is where a pelmet or valance comes into play. As a fixed item, pelmets allow you the option to hide curtain hardware without too much fuss for a modern or contemporary look.
4
A valance is a far more dressy and elegant way to finish off a window that has blinds. You can be creative with the design and fabric you use to introduce colour, texture and pattern into any room in a home. OPPOSITE PAGE: With fabric taken from the cushions, this stylish, pleated valance adds the finishing touch to a relaxed living room. ABOVE: Plain fabric with prominent pleats in a matching fabric balance the look.

ABOVE: A combination of blinds and curtains is an elegant choice, which allows for the use of dress blinds, such as these simple roll-up versions that are held in place with tape. RIGHT: A more casual setting, yet still elegant, is the use of Roman blinds with a contrasting band of colour, framed by half-drop curtains.
5
Venetian blinds in a wood finish look great and are a practical choice providing privacy while allowing the light in. Another natural option is bamboo blinds, but unless you are looking for a contemporary or minimalist look, dress bamboo blinds with a valance or side drapes, as they can leave a room looking bare.
6
If you have blinds in your home, you’re going to find this microfibre blind cleaner very handy. This clever household tool has ‘prongs’ that are inserted between the blind slats and that are gently squeeze along the blinds to trap and remove dust easily and quickly.

Roman blinds are perfect for windows that have little or no room for drapes down either side, they are also practical for rooms that receive too much sun during the summer months and for garden or sunrooms. Roman blinds are easily raised or lowered to control the amount of sunlight into a room.
a cut above ABOVE: Colours taken from the cushions are mirrored in the striped fabric. Roman blinds are also ideal simply for the fact that they are so easy to make. Coordinate fabric for your blinds with existing decor in the room.

Roman Blinds
Roman blinds are easy to make and easy to update - match them with cushions and other soft furnishings in a room, use neutral fabrics, or go for an over-the-top contrasting pattern. Roman blinds don’t just look good; they’re also energy efficient keeping your home cool in summer and warm in winter. These roll up blinds can also be used in a variety of types of window, and offer an affordable way to dress your windows without breaking the bank.
You will need: Fabric of choice Double Fold Bias Tape Sewing Machine and supplies Velcro Blind rings Tape measure Soft pencil or fabric pen 8
8mm dowels Nylon cord Eye hooks Angle brackets Drill/Driver + asstd drill and screw bits Wall anchors and plugs
Here’s how: 1. Decide how many drops you want for your roman shade. Each drop is approximately 140mm in length and the number of drops will determine the total length of fabric required. You can make as many drops as you’d like to create a longer roman shade. 2. Measure the width of your window and cut your material. You will be adding bias tape to the edge, so cut the width accurately to fit the width of the window.
Linen and heavy-cotton are the best fabrics for Roman blinds
3. Take your double-fold bias tape and edge both sides of the fabric for the shade. Pin and sew the bias tape onto your fabric. If your top and bottom edges are not finished, fold over and sew, so you have a finished edge. 4. Use a tape measure and pencil to measure from the top to the bottom at 140mm intervals; mark on the back side of the fabric down both sides.
9
5. At this mark pin double-edge bias from side to side and then sew along the top and bottom edge of the bias to create a pocket. This pocket holds 8mm dowels that are used to raise/lower the blind. 6. For a blind less than 50cm wide you need to sew on 4 curtain rings - equally spaced along the length of the pocket. A wider blind will obviously require more rings. 7. Staple fabric over mounting bar and attach a strip of velcro to the front of the bar and to the top of your blind. 8. Run cords as per diagram below, starting with a knotted green in the bottom ring.

H fit over window frame Decide how far you want the fabric to overlap on all sides – at least 50mm is recommend. Measure the width from E to F, adding a further 40mm to allow for the mounting bar or operating mechanism. Measure from G to H to the length you require. Make a note of these measurements to the nearest millimetre using a metal tape measure.
NOTES: Ensure that the blind can hang freely when fully extended. When fitting inside a frame, the recess should be at least 75mm deep to allow for any mechanism.

DININGCHAIR
makeover
A geometric stencil and some fabric paint are all that you need to give you dining room chairs a quick makeover. 1. Print out your chosen design and then use a sharp craft knife to cut out. 2. Place the stencil against the chair fabric and use a stencil brush to dab on paint. Be sure to dab off excess paint on a piece of newspaper before applying to the fabric to avoid ‘bleeding’ around the stencil. Thanks to ‘It’s good to be home’ for this great project idea.

I stumbled upon this embroidered necklace project on a South American blog. The delicate design is created using simple embroidery stitches and the ower is attached to a hair clip, making it very easy to slip onto a ďŹ ne gold chain.
Thin copper or jewellery wire Long nose pliers Sewing accessories Embroidery weave fabric Embroidery thread Hair clip Small scraps of felt Fabric glue Floral tape Pearl button Gold chain 16
credit: cosascositasycosotasconmesh
You will need:
Here’s how: 1. Cut a piece of wire to 10cm length and use pliers to shape the petal and twist the end to close off. Make sure that you twist tightly so that the petal shape stays closed. 2. Place the petal shape onto your cotton weave fabric and attach using stitches along the edge of the wire petal shape. 3. Working from the bottom up, start to sew a long stitch from side to side within the inside of the wire shape. Keep the stitches very close together to fill up any gaps. 4. Working from the side, start the run a stitch from top to bottom in exactly the same way. You want to fill up any gaps for a solid petal design. Finish off with a loop stitch to tie off.
5. Use scissors to cut out the petal shape, leaving a 5mm edge around the outside for folding over and finishing off. Pack the fabric neatly behind the petal and use a few stitches to close.
17
6. Create ďŹ ve petals in total. Finish off each petal with embroidery thread in a contrasting thread colour to highlight the petals. 7. Start to assemble all the petals by twisting the wires together. The centre pearl is added using a shanked-button; thread a small piece of wire through the shank of the button and fasten to the petal wires. Make sure that everything is ďŹ rmly wrapped together. 8. Cover the back of the petals with pieces of felt cut to size and glued on. Use oral tape to wrap around the wires to disguise. 9. Thread the twisted wires through the hairclip, bending and arranging until it sits nicely onto the clip. Attach the clip onto your gold chain.

Budget Bathroom
This classic 1950s bathroom was spiffed up, outfitted with a few modern luxuries, and brought up to date function-wise without destroying the character or original period details— and for bargain price. Some say that if you wait long enough, everything comes back in style. But “in style” doesn’t necessarily mean “in perfect shape” or “in sync with today’s lifestyle.” Such was the case with the bathroom shown here. 25
Moisture problems had caused peeling paint, while 50 years of wear and tear had taken a toll on the grout, fixtures and hardware. However, the homeowners saw too many things going for the space to completely gut it.
Having saved a bundle by renovating existing fittings in the bathroom, the homeowners had some budget left to indulge in a few accessories.
A custom window blind was added to match the wall colour. 26
“The whole point of buying this fifties house was to create our 21st century life here while honouring the original architecture and detail,” says the homeowner. “We wanted to complement and elevate what was already here and reuse as many materials as we could.” And by doing
The towels and bathroom rug proved to be a shopping challenge, as the colours needed to match.
so, they were able to reach their goal of updated function on a modest budget. The couple were able to avoid expensive renovation work and get the bathroom they wanted for just under R3,000.
This bathroom now has greater utility and a clean, contemporary look - without breaking the bank. After adding an extraction fan to handle the moisture problem, they began dealing with the cosmetics. A professional tiler was brought in to repair the period tiles that had seen 53 years of bathroom life. By freshening the grout, the tiler brought the surfaces up to standard. Another great example of the couple’s “reuse it” philosophy lies in their treatment of the vanity. Years of water damage had damaged the original vanity, so it was sanded and painted with several coats of enamel paint and a new vanity top installed. The vanity was fitted with pullout drawers.
Adjustable MelaWood shelving was added along with a replacement tissue box holder in the side of the cabinet.
The old sconces were replaced with lights that better match the new drawer pulls and add a contemporary flair to the room. Keeping the existing tub saves tremendous time and money. So the tub stayed, while some of the more easily changed elements around it were replaced. One of the first changes was to oust the shower door. “In a small bathroom, a flexible shower curtain creates a sense of spaciousness. And I use my bathtub every day, so a shower door is just not practical. The tub had a single showerhead with a bath tap. Now a lowcradled hand shower easily sets into an adjustable height showerhead fixture, adding to the usefulness and elegance of the bathroom.
A original vanity was restored and new top installed. The cabinets were fitted with pull-out drawers for maximum storage. 27

Spring
COLOUR Spring is ofďŹ cially here, and what better way to give your home a new look than to add some fresh colour.
If you’re thinking of changing your colour scheme be sure to take green into consideration. This is one colour that works well in any room in the home. In all its hues and shades, green is a refreshing and rejuvenating colour, which is why it is often used in health spas. Use bright, zesty lime greens to create an exhilarating and energising space or opt for toned down sage for a relaxing and restful atmosphere. Green is the ideal colour for a study, living room, bedroom, bathroom or hallway, but if you are really a fan, you can make a green colour scheme work in any room of the house. 35
36
image willey design
To create a harmonious colour scheme, combine green with colours adjacent to it on the colour wheel, for example lime green with aqua [see picture on opposite page]. Moving in the other direction, you can create a harmonious scheme using organic colours like moss green with lime, deep ochre and terracotta [see room below].
For a more subdued colour scheme, use toned-down shades of the same harmonious colours. Using the colour wheel, select a paler shade of green and then use it alongside the colours adjacent to it on the same ring which will be of the same intensity and create balance. Harmonious schemes work best when you don’t use all the colours in equal measure, so save the brightest colour for an uplifting accent. Make use fabrics and accessories to bring other component colours into the scheme.

Here’s how: 1. Use a pockethole jig to drill on the back side of C and D and then attach these sections to the top of the legs A. If you don’t have a pockethole jig you can use steel corner brackets or braces. 2. Drill pocketholes in sides B. Measure and mark at 100mm up from the bottom of each leg and then attach the side supports to the legs at this mark.
43
3. In each decorative panel F, use an 8mm wood bit to drill out 2 holes in each panel. The holes should be half the length of the dowel. Insert dowel centres and carefully align before pushing against the leg to make a mark with the dowel centre. Remove the panel and drill out with the 8mm wood bit. 4. Place a small bead of wood glue in the holes in the panel and in the leg, insert the dowels into the panel and then push into the leg section. Clamp to hold in place if necessary and let the glue dry. 5. Attach the top E to the frame by drilling pilot holes at each corner, directly above the legs; countersink the pilot holes and then screw the top to the frame. 6. Position the slats G equally along the bottom sides sections and glue these in place. Let the glue dry. 7. Add a back to your potting bench by screwing the side sections I between the top and bottom sections H. Use a heavy-duty stapler to attach the trellis J to the back of the frame and then attach the bottom section of the frame to the top back of the bench with four 65mm screws. 8. Sand all the edges and surfaces with an orbital sander and 180-grit sandpaper. You want the wood to feel silky smooth before you start painting. Wipe down with a slightly damp cloth to remove all traces of dust.
44
9. Working outdoors or in a well-ventilated space, apply a light coat of Rust-Oleum 2X Painters Touch. We used sage green for our project, but there are a wide selection of colours to choose from. Select a colour that will look nice in the garden.
When applying spray paints it’s essential not to be too close to the surface to avoid drips and runs. Hold the can at a distance of no less than 30cm away from the surface and spray in light, even strokes from left to right. Once the first, light coat is dry you will only need to apply a second light coat. Rust-Oleum 2X spray paint is perfect for use outdoors and can be applied to a wide variety of materials: use on wood, wicker, unglazed ceramics, stone and plaster finishes.

Girl Talk Even more Girl Power!
The reason that Home-Dzine and DIY Divas support the Bosch range of power tools, is due to the amount of research and development that Bosch put into making tools that are easy to use for us ladies. And that doesn’t mean these tools are for wimps - anything but! The new FAMILY range of Bosch Power Tools are perfect for any DIY Diva or DIY Guy. For example: I was lucky enough to recently try out the new cordless range of Bosch power tools. Oh the joy of using cordless tools! LEFT: The PST 18Li cordless jigsaw packs power with its lithium-ion battery and 1-hour charger, which can be used for all tools in the Bosch 18 V lithium system - so you only need ONE battery for all your tools.
RIGHT: Another new addition is the PSN 18Li cordless sander. This small, lightweight sander is tough enough to handle all your small sanding tasks – even in hard-to-reach areas and on small surfaces. The built in dust micro-filter box means less mess to clean up.
LEFT: And last but not least, the new generation PSR 18Li-2 Drill/Driver is lightweight with enough power for all screwdriving work.
