This week in The Green Room: A mixed bag in the studio this week . Started off doing some voice overs for a short film currently being made by Bernard Lloyd. Involved recording several different voice over artists “in character,” and then editing it all down to a single take. Solo singer songwriter Tim Davies has been in to record the first of hopefully many tracks. We started with Tim playing a simple guide track of acoustic and vocals then began the layering process. Guest musicians include Brian Ritchie on bass, Jeremy Matcham on electric guitar and John Salter on drums. This week I began working with newcomer Jen Hampson. Jen has a great sense of melody and a sweet Joni Mitchell-esque vocal style. This will be a great project as we are pretty much working form the ground up, with the songs that leave a lots of scope for some great arrangements and instrumentation. Next up was more overdubs with Gretel Templeton. The tracking of violin and cello has added the perfect amount of richness and texture to one of Gretel’s more minimalist tracks. All the vocals are now complete with only mixing and mastering remaining. sMICHAEL SHELLEY 0 www.thegreenroomstudio.net.au

ROCK - MELBOURNE // THE BLOW WAVES
Making Waves
“…Being a Blow Wave isn’t about being gay, it’s about being in a cool f*cking band!...” Certainly a band that makes an impression, The Blow Waves have been mixing punk, disco and glam rock since 2006. We dare you to find another band in the country with such an eccentric style (and a sound to match), and putting on such a high-energy rock show. If you haven’t heard The Blow Waves, then no doubt you’d at least be familiar with the band’s lead singer, Matt “Doll.” Along with his sister Beki, Matt previously fronted the band The Mavis’, with their smash hit single ‘Cry’ ending up the most performed Australian work in 1998. Jamie “Wave” Slocombe, Blow Waves’ lead guitarist, also had success with the band Love Outside Andromeda, having been featured on Triple J’s Hottest 100. Nowadays the boys have teamed up with good mates Byron St John, John Pants and Jezz Beat to form The Blow Waves, not only a genre mixing band full of rocky-disco camp, but also one of the few to feature an openly gay line-up. Not that this is a distinction music fans should make. “I think drawing a line between sexual preference is dangerous. It segregates people, and this is what creates war. The best shows we have played have been mixed crowds. Music shouldn’t separate, it should bring everyone together - Gay, Straight, Black and White.” The view keyboard player Byron has is also shared by singer Matt, who explains that “music has
always been about breaking down labels put upon us by mainstream society.” Byron continues the point. “We’re more then just a gay band trying to follow the footsteps of those who came before us on the gay-pop circuit. Our sound is unique. We can make you dance, make you cry or laugh, but we can be hardcore. Being a Blow Wave isn’t about being gay, it’s about being in a cool f*cking band! It just also happens that we all like boys.” And though the band isn’t interested in being pegged as just a ‘gay band’ (stereotypes that they’re breaking anyway), they’re still more than happy to embrace their gay fan base. The band have been lucky enough to play a number of gay pride events and festivals all over the world including Sydney’s Mardi Gras and now our very own TasPride Festival. As bassist John explains, “It’s a great opportunity for us, the gay community has been the first to embrace us so playing these sort of events is like coming home..... If you lived in a big park with rainbows everywhere.” But Byron is also quick to add, “it’s as big as an honor to play a predominantly
gay event as it is to play a predominantly straight event - as long as ANYONE can attend. We don’t discriminate. We are just happy to be making and playing music.”
started with our very first show. Sometimes it happens lots, and sometimes people are shy, but there’s been everything from jockstraps to bras thrown, and some big scary beige ones too.”
And when they do get the opportunity to play, the band are known to go a little wild onstage. Combined with their sometimes over the top imagery, another “form of expression” used by the band, The Blow Waves throw everything they have into the live experience. So intense is the energy, that they’re still trying to get things right in the studio - to aptly represent what fans get at a show. “This is something we are working towards and the reason we haven’t recorded our full length debut album yet,” says Matt. “There’s enough songs for at least three albums, but our sound is constantly evolving and we’re looking for a producer we can work with to capture the energy of our live set and at the same time make a great sounding studio album.”
Byron is a little more coy with his on stage underwear stories, “I don’t kiss and tell.” But one thing the band are willing to tell us, is be ready for anything when attending a Blow Waves show. “Everyone should be prepared to lose their underwear at Pride!” Says John, but Byron also adds that the band will be giving their all, because at the end of the night “we want our audience to have a good time, to leave a show feeling inspired and wanting more.”
One of the things that gives The Blow Waves a special energy, is perhaps the song ‘Little Bitch’ and the lyric “hit me with your underwear,” which is often taken very seriously by the band’s fans. Matt tells us that “the underwear throwing

INDIE - PERTH // THE PANICS
Don’t Panic
When Jae Laffer started his first day of high school, he met a likeminded fellow called Drew Wootton and not long after they started a band. A few Friday night practices, meetings in the library, and quite a few years later, The Panics became what we know them as today – one of Australia’s hottest indie rock bands. After picking up an ARIA and a J Award for their 2007 release, Cruel Guards, the band are now back in the thick of the record-making process, and preparing for the Summer festival season. that did pretty good, being the last album. And we know what we’re good at now, so it’s just making sure we get it right. We’re very confident in the studio now, so we’re pretty sure if we’ve got the songs exactly how we want them, then it will be a good record. It’s a whole process, it’s exciting, and it’s getting toward the good bit.
What have you been up to today, Jae? It’s just a sunny day, so I’ve been out on my motorcycle for a little bit of a ride. So what have the Panics been doing lately? We’ve basically been cooped up in Melbourne, finishing the writing of a whole bunch of songs. We’ve done a bunch of festivals recently, so now we’ve put aside the next couple of months until Christmas, basically just workshopping ideas and words and that kind of thing. There’s been occasional writing trips to different places, just trying to get on top of the language for the record and get it into a good spot before we go and record it. That all sounds wonderful. Well, we’ve made a few records by now and we know how to work the whole process through, and we’ve had the luxury of having an album
PAGE 6
You’re playing at the Soundscape Festival down here in January. I know I’ve heard even some big, experienced artists say they still suffer from stage fright at big gigs, how do you feel about going on stage? I feel pretty good these days. I’ve had periods where I felt really scared. You put a lot of pressure on yourself; if you’re really serious about your music you can feel like every moment is an important point. But these days I feel pretty good. The performing is something we’ve had the luxury of having a few years of getting it right. With the festivals over summer – how many other ones are you playing? About three or four over the Christmas/New Year period, so not a huge amount. Just enough to get us through, give us a chance to play a few new songs and get us through. We’ve just been in a huge writing spell, so we’re actually pretty
keen to play a few new songs. Will the new material surprise or comfort existing fans?’ I’m sure that people who know us will be able to recognise us, but also that beautiful transition where you can hear a band go from something that is good to something more we’re capable of…All the great points about the group coming right out, and showing it off…It’s a hard thing to put into words, but just everything that we’re good at x10. Have some really big, out there songs to surprise everyone. We don’t want it to sound like the last record, ‘cause we’ve been sitting on it for a while. I think it’s going to be large, and sparse and really out there, and hopefully just really interesting to people. How different do you think the Panics would be if you started out in Melbourne, your new base, than starting out in Perth? I reckon we’d be pretty different. It’s hard to tell. I can’t really compare it because I don’t know what it’s like to grow up somewhere else. We took a lot from being in Perth, we wrote about Perth things. Just something about the climate and the landscape of W.A. stayed with us, and we’re proud of that. There’s a certain atmosphere of the place that we’ve carried with us. What are your earliest memories of
making music in Perth? How far back can you remember? A really, really long time. I started bands in primary school, which lasted into high school... I remember rehearsing every Friday night, and meeting in the library at lunchtime at school and writing words together, and making t-shirts for our band. There was a strong feeling between the bunch of us that we wanted to be these rock and rollers. It’s just amazing to have the dreams when you’re ten years old, and we never variated from that path. Is it family or friends that keep you grounded when you win Triple J album of the year, or an ARIA, or have the Kings of Leon making great statements about you? Well hopefully we do a pretty good job of keeping ourselves grounded, I mean I’ve still got the same core group of friends I’ve had for most of my life, which have been pretty good about putting things into perspective. But time moves by really quick, and if you win an award or something, you’ve got to sit back and enjoy it and look at what you’ve created and be proud of it. sDAVID WILLIAMS The Panics will be at The Soundscape Festival early in the New Year. 0 9 January @ Hobart Regatta Grounds . OFF THE SHELF
YOUR DAMN NEIGHBOURS
Top Shelf has been up and running for almost a year now, hosting the best of Tasmania’s original music acts every Wednesday evening. Without the support of our sponsors we wouldn’t be able to keep this up. So, a massive thanks to Chris Veevers at Frontline, Jase Howard at LAfm, Dave K Q at Sauce, Dave Munting, James Harding, Toni Earl, Dane Leonard, Shaw, Deano, Luka and Matt Neil. Cheers! Coming up this week, Wednesday October 28, we have the cool sound of Kasper, a Launceston based folk three-piece featuring ex Embers front man, Mick Attard, on bass duties. Tess Kasper’ beautiful voice leads this group as her songs tell of love, despair and the trouble of living in such a small community that is Tasmania. Dan Callaghan’s exceptional percussion work really sets these guys above other acts in this genre, providing a back bone to an otherwise fluid sounding music. Supporting Kasper will be Summer Edmunds, a talented singer/songwriter who’s last show was one of this years highlights. A perfect way to welcome in the warmer months. Usually a knee reconstruction makes you think of a serious sport injury but for The Little Cubas, Joss Thomas, it’s one of the perils of performing hard hitting swamp stomp. Just weeks after surgeons took his knee apart and hopefully put it back together he and Kylie Souter are jumping back up on stage to bang out their trademark sound that has seen them conquer all corners of this island in a relatively short period. The combination of riff rock, four on the floor, and conga work brings the roots mad tassie scene to life and The Little Cubas do it like no one else. Frankie makes her return to Top Shelf opening the show for The Cubas on Wednesday November 4. Fresh from their Rock Challenge crowning as kings of the college scene, Your Damn Neighbours took to the Top Shelf stage on October 14 and blew the crowd apart! A lot has been written about guitarist Billy Bennett’s astronomical talent but on this night they really shone as four members together. The rhythm section has been boosted by new bass player, Alex, and along with Aled on kit they are starting to kick some ass. Front man, Toby, just keeps getting better with comments like “Robert Plant?” being thrown around... big call, but can see the comparison. New comer, Zac Slater, is one to watch out for. Having taken out the acoustic section of the Tasmanian Rock Challenge, Zac looks set to become the new solo hero about town. His voice is quite extraordinary falling somewhere between Dave Adams and Sting, whilst his guitar work is closer to a Jack Johnson/Ben Harper sound. If his debut Top Shelf performance is anything to go by then he will soon be playing to packed rooms. Take care amigos and join us at Irish Murphy’s Launceston on Wednesday November 11 for our 1 year birthday bash featuring The Dog Line and Carl Fidler. Back to where it all began. sCARL FIDLER & GLENN MOOREHOUSE Photography by Toni M. Reach for the Top Shelf! 0 Every Wednesday night @ Irish Murphy’s, Launceston

Saucy Sparkle
TURN THE DIAL TO 11 With Jim of Sydney City Trash
Tales of tease and all things sparkling from Hobart and beyond! Brought to you by Hobart’s own Diamonds of Burlesque. For the past twelve weeks I have been I am not so fervent in my need, though I have hobbling my way through the streets of a story to tell through movement, and whilst Hobart, shuffling my steps and donning I am still able to tease and titillate and peel my flat sneakers whilst the other Diamonds costumes off one by one like a ripe banana, I shall dance. tower over me in their heels. My foot has become a major topic of conversation:
Originally formed by a couple of boys from Tamworth, Sydney City Trash now hails from the big smoke, playing their own brand of extremely Aussie “Convict Cuntry Rock and Roll.” Now with their new CD Terror Australis finally out, the SC TRASH boys are on tour to let you know why you should buy it! Fiddle & mandolin player Jim Bones puts aside the country for a minute, and turns the rock & roll dial up to 11 to tell us what he was doing… 11 years ago… I reckon I was probably incredibly stoned in my mate’s attic staring at one of those ‘alien with a bong’ posters. You know, the “Take Me To Your Dealer” ones? Totally rad. Whoever invented those was a genius. The combination of dope paraphernalia, aliens and psychedelic colours stimulated the average stoner’s brain in such a way that even if Pamela Anderson (remember this was 1998) walked into the room and asked us to perform in her latest ‘home movie’, none of us would’ve batted an eyelid. 11 months ago… I think we were recording our new album Terror Australis which will be on sale at the gig for the rock bottom price of $20! What a brilliant marketing segway that was... 11 weeks ago… Busy planning our tour for this record. Cause we always play the Brisbane - best pub(licans) in the cuntry - there were only minor details to sort out for the Tassie leg of the tour. The most heated point of debate was whether or not we should have a bar tab...The last time we had a tab at the Brisbane we spent more money on
booze than on flights and publicity. We also got into a brawl with each other after Gibbo started pouring shots of Absinthe. We should’ve known better...the bottle was ominously housed in a coffin behind the bar. Since it’s Halloween, the other major decision was what the theme for the night should be - 80’s horror! 11 days ago… Playing our album launch at the Tote. Melbourne rocked, but I know Tassie will top it. You guys know how to party. 11 hours ago… Not very rock n Roll, but I was sleeping. But only because I’d been up for the last week doing every drug under the sun through every possible orifice, destroying very expensive hotel rooms using my bare hands, getting into fights on trans-continental flights, banging celebrities and generally rocking the f*ck out. 11 minutes ago… Remembering I had to do this thing before 5pm. 11 years from now? I reckon sitting by the banks of the Huon with a bunch of mates watching the tinnies bob up and down, reminiscing about that show in Tassie 11 years ago and how it is still being talked about as one of the greatest gigs of all time. Jesus, I think to myself, wouldn’t you feel like a right prawn if you were in Tassie back in 2009 and you missed out on that one? Don’t be a prawn ... 0 31 October @ The Brisbane Hotel, Hbt

“Terrorists blown stuff up lately?” “Nah, only in Iraq.” “Gonna rain today?” “Nah, she’s good mate” “How’s the foot?” “She’s still broken” This is capped off with the concerned citizen’s cry of “Well maybe you shouldn’t dance on it!” Sure. And perhaps, just perhaps, pigs will govern, vampires will shine and Hell shall freeze over. I have never broken anything more than my right foot (three times!), and not as a child where crutches are toys and books are carried by eager classmates. I haven’t experienced the ‘thrill’ of allowing people to write on my cast – answering the too cheery plaster cast tech guy’s happy “What colour? Yellow, blue, pink, white…?” With a flat “black… Like my soul.” – Actually, I wanted to match it to my emo channeling long black socks.
My room is a shrine to Burlesque. Suitcases of costumes and feathered headdresses, many procured from the old Casino topless Revues of the seventies, sit, jumbled in suitcases, waiting to spew forth an avalanche of sequins and feathers upon an unsuspecting audience. My work wardrobe dwindles as the costumes pile up. I anticipate the day when I turn up for my job in a red Can-Can outfit, or I lope into a tired Sunday brunch clad in a fabulous corset from Paris and jeans. But for now, I limp ever so slightly through life, groan my way through my routines and smile for the audience because the show must go on. sMISS LUCY SKY
To see the show go on, check out Miss Lucy Sky at the Pricilla Queen of the Desert themed Sketchy’s! 0 3 November @ Kaos Cafe, Hobart
However, broken foot or no, as they say in this business, the show must go on. In the knee length cast that encased my leg last year, I danced a classic tease with Mick Lowenstein, who happily skipped off stage with my crutches, and later in the show I popped out of a cake to pop a cherry (or two) upon a boy’s cupcake, before crawling off the stage… (Mick forgot to return the crutches). This year I have jammed my foot into pointe shoes, sneakers and ballet slippers because people must be entertained and I must dance. In the movie, The Red Shoes, The director of the ballet company asks Moira Shearer “Why do you dance?” She retorts, “Why do you live?”

Supported by electro pop satirists THE BAD FATHER
THE POWER OF THREE With Jonathon B of Taberah.
Getting ready to support the legendary rockers of LORD, Hobart four-piece Taberah let us know all about The Power of Three. Which three of your band’s songs are you most proud of and why? I’m proud of every song I’ve ever written! (laughs) 1. I wrote ‘Stormchild’ at a time in my life where I was dealing with massive life changes, I needed to hear a kick ass rock’n’roll song to have a beer and reflect to. It came out fuckin great and it’s probably my favourite tune to play live now. 2. I like of ‘The Call of Evil’ because I think I’m the only person on earth who hears the story in the song... It’s a story about me having weird dreams and premonitions about the mortal world falling to the dark underworld, so I rally the human race to help me fight. Little do I know that the Devil has secretly possessed me and is using me to rally the world to fight under his control! (laughs) great fun! 3. ‘Brothers of the Fire’ will always be a favourite of mine because it gets a reaction (laughs). You’d be amazed at how many people don’t get it, and think we actually believe we are “Dashingly handsome and modest as hell” (laughs) I guess the big secret in Tabz (Taberah), is the tongue-in-cheek we like to scatter about the place. We were absent that day in heavy metal school when they told us it all had to be dead serious. F*ck that!
“…[We’ll be] doing our best to make the best records we can and giving heavy metal the much needed kiss of life it sorely longs for!...”
What are three strange facts about the band that we wouldn’t find in the liner notes? 1. Well... we are banned from staying in Devonport hotels because of a killer night at the cosy cabins place in ‘06. No regrets. 2. Tom and I have been playing music together for about 7ish years! 3. We broke the record for most people on the Brisbane Hotel stage when we invited the crowd up to sing ‘Rock and Roll All Nite’ at the original Tabz line up’s final gig. Almost broke the stage too! What are three non-music related things you need with you on stage or in rehearsal? 1. I need a gallon of water. 2. A vest 3. And a headband! What are three peculiar things about any band member that people may not know? 1. When he’s not being the guy behind me on stage hitting things, Tom is an apprentice baker out at Banjos. I just think that’s completely peculiar right there! Who would want to work those crazy hours?! (laughs) 2. Tom’s drum kit has 2 kick drums but he rarely uses the second one. It’s mostly there because it looks badass. 3. Lastly, he will only eat cheese if it is melted. Crazy, but true. What are three things you love about being in the Taberah? 1. The pure adrenaline of performing your hard work to a crowd and having them sing along. 2. It’s the band I’ve always dreamed of being in. Since I was old enough to dream. Soppy sh*t, but it’s true! 3. I get to laugh my ass off with three of my best mates! If you were to go back in time three years ago, what would you tell yourself that you wished you’d known then? Well in terms of life in general, I’d tell myself “Look at what you’re doing! Be more careful with your alcohol and learn your limits!” (laughs) But I guess that’s a story for another time! So in terms of Tabz, I’d teach myself all the things I know now about singing and guitar playing. Also tell myself to completely let go onstage and entertain in the way you’ve always wanted to. It took me too many years to lose my shyness on stage! Catch the LORD show, which is also doubling as Taberah’s EP launch! 0 5 December @ The Brisbane Hotel, Hbt

INDIE - SYDNEY // PHILADELPHIA GRAND JURY
Hope For the Best Forged from a childhood friendship between MC Bad Genius (Joel Beeson) and Berkfinger (Simon Berckelman), indie rockers The Philadelphia Grand Jury (The Philly Jays) have recently released their debut album, Hope Is For the Hopers. With their single ‘Going to the Casino (Tomorrow Night)’ featured heavily on Triple J and Underbely, they’ve attracted a lot of attention, and are sure to do the same when they make it to Tassie for a special Halloween show. Berkfinger let us know just what we have to hope for at their upcoming tour. If you were facing the Grand Jury, what would you be charged with? Tax evasion and parking tickets. If you were to ‘Going to the Casino (Tomorrow Night)’, what would be your game of choice? Always with the black jack. Always. What’s the biggest musical gamble you’ve made in your career? Probably deciding to make the album all by ourselves. Everybody said not to do it - but we did and we are happy and still relatively sane.
“…People know the words to the songs now, which is cool. Also we’ve been getting free sandwiches. So yes, it’s basically a success...” How does it feel to be sending your first LP out into the world? Is it like giving birth? I used to get self conscious and worry about it a lot but, to be honest, I got much bigger problems. I feel like a bad parent sometimes. Now on tour for the album, has it been going better than you had hoped so far? People know the words to the songs now, which is cool. Also we’ve been getting free sandwiches. So yes it’s basically a success. If Hope is For the Hopers, what are they hoping for? Why bother? What are you hoping for… today? Well the venue is sold out tonight so I’m feeling fairly complacent. Maybe to meet a nice girl? This month? To survive. This year? To make a really awesome second album and pay my parents back all the money I owe them. What can Tassie fans hope to experience at a Philly Jays show? Philly Jays promise to meet each and every one of you. We will bring you flowers and do your tax. sMEEGAN MAY Who says they’re nothing left to hope for? 0 31 October @ Republic Bar, Hobart

Dali & The Paper Band Hello and hello new glossy Saucers. Very, very exciting times at the Greenhouse, with more announcements coming every fortnight to the Sauce valley of love. Firstly, I gotta say, amazing show for show day eve. The Trolls, The Overview and New Saxons completely rocked out and there were many fists in the air and drunken singalongs, good fun was had by all and music was the winner on the day.
But to lighter news, we’re hosting an excellent New South Welsh band in November called The Villain Epic. These guys have a deep and smooth rock swing somewhat comparable to Incubus at their sweetest and beautifully balanced with Ben Wells and the Middle Names, this gig will make you smile and sway – check out The Villain
T O N I C ?
I do have some sad new for you mon saucieres though; Dali and the Paper Band, long term excellent soul/reggae/rock band from Hobart is about to be no more! The elegant Dali Srhoj, front man and leading light of the band has gone and found himself a lovely Scandinavian lady and he’s jumping ship to chase his heart (aawwwww) so we’ve decided to throw the band a big farewell bash as a last gig before he flies the
coop. The Dali & the Paper Band farewell show will feature several bands and soloists getting up in a loose order show and with Dali thrashing out the great songs he’s worked up with this fun lovin’ band on the 4th of November at Irish Murphy’s the Greenhouse. We wish you the best journeys and look forward to hearing the next incarnation of your music Dali!

Their Joni Mitchell-esque power vibes and with amazing harmony work and high octane slashing of the acoustic guitar, this will be a powerful show indeed. DANCE - GOLD COAST // STAFFORD BROTHERS
A Brother’s Guide
Alley Cat ASA and Irish Murphy's The Greenhouse present ‘Wax Lyrical’

“…We also play a wide range of music. We’re always just trying to move forward...”
3rd November Melly Frank Andrew Marshall Madelyn Munday Katie de Cruz 9pm - 11pm FREE ENTRY @ THE GREENHOUSE
While most siblings have trouble sharing a bathroom, Matt and Chris Stafford are happy to work and play together, as they tour the world with their electro house duo, aptly titled the Stafford Brothers. Proud Gold Coasters, the boys have spent ten years on the band, which they started after first trying to forge solo DJ careers. Obviously these two work best as a pair, on top of their music they have clothing label 5am and now a reality show in the works. Most recently the Stafford Brothers have amassed a slew of hit remixes and discs for dance heavyweights Ministry of Sound, including their most recent Clubber’s Guide to Spring. “It was probably one of the hardest ones we’ve ever had to put together,” says Matt Stafford of the Clubber’s Guide disc. But not because of the music or the mixing, instead the brothers had to battle illness and the internet in order to get their mix in on time. “The mix was due on a Wednesday, and Chris got sick on Monday and just couldn’t get out of bed for three days. We hadn’t even really pieced together the mix or anything, so we had to delay that for a couple of days. “Then we were in a hotel in England by the Sunday night, and we started uploading the mix, and two hours in the guy came around to tell us the internet was going off until the next morning. So then we had to find another place to upload it, and we had to sit with it. So you can imagine the joy of sitting in front of a laptop watching it upload for six hours…But we got it.” Jetting from Spain to England with a few mixes in between is just what the brothers have finished doing when we catch up with Matt. Having just got off the plane from Europe, the Stafford Brothers already have their next gig lined up for that night. How does he do it? “I just enjoy doing it, so it’s not really a chore, I don’t need to hype myself up, I just turn up pretty excited.” The tour he’s just finished was a whirlwind featuring party spots all over Greece, Spain, Germany, the UK and Sweden, and they even found time to head to the studio. With shows booked out until January next year, and another
trip overseas after that, Matt will need to keep up the hype to cope with all the travel, which he sees as the worst part of the job. “Once you’re in a city or a country it’s great fun, you’re having a great time, but the rest of it… The worst part is just sitting on the plane. I don’t hate it, but I’d say travelling is the most painful part of it. Everything else is good.” Partying with celebrities both in and out of the dance world is one of those good things that come with the job, but like 90% of other DJs (a percentage Matt estimates), he’s all about just having a good time. “With the DJ culture, everyone seems to party. I’m more into having a good time though, so whoever’s there is there!” Once the party is over and the Stafford Brothers head home, they’ll often bring with them the latest and best sounds they’ve encountered – one of the reasons that makes them so perfect for mixing a disc for The Clubber’s Guide series. “I guess there’s a lot of new influences, dance music is crossing over majorly now, with all the Americans starting to get into it. You’re hearing dance music everywhere with Akon, Kelly Rowlands, the Black Eyed Peas, and you can see the commercial side of dance music getting a lot bigger. At the same time there’s more underground, and they’re going off on more of a tangent to move as far away from the cheesy commercial stuff that they can.” As for how it influences their own sound at shows, Matt explains that the Stafford Brothers are “known for having a good time, and definitely bringing a party. But we also play a wide range of music. We’re always just trying to move forward.” sDAVID WILLIAMS & MEEGAN MAY Show some brotherly love… 0 7 November @ Hotel New York, Launceston

DANCE - SYDNEY // BLACK ANGUS
Black Angus
Black Angus is a man with many hats. The co-founder and chief DJ at Sneaky Sundays; co-founder, producer, songwriter, guitarist and DJ for ARIA Award-winning super group Sneaky Sound System; owner of independent record label Whack Recordings; and of course, genre defying party DJ.
Like many children, his parents turned him on to music, but not in the way one would expect. At the tender age of eight he had a sneaking suspicion his mother’s playlist of Demis Roussos, Charlie Pride & Neil Diamond was not quite right, while his father’s blind obsession with Slim Dusty and American country music wasn’t pressing any buttons either, although there was ‘something’ about Jonny Cash that young Angus couldn’t quite put his finger on. So began a lifelong search for music that did press the right buttons – 80s electro pop, Italo disco, American soul, Detroit Techno, German electronica, French house, acid house, deep house, minimal house and electro. Black Angus turned his hand to writing and producing in 2004, and a string of club and radio anthems followed that would change the face of Australian dance music forever. With a DJ CV that spans the globe and includes festivals like Glastonbury, V UK, Wireless UK, Rockness, Isle of Wight, Global Gathering, Mysteryland, Big Day Out, Splendour In The Grass, Good Vibrations, and clubs like Space Ibiza, Pacha Ibiza, Pacha NYC, Matter UK and just about every other club worth playing in the world, it would be fair to say that Black Angus, the man with many hats, really does know what he is doing.
DANCE - MELBOURNE // HELLRAISER
Raising Hell
Proving that there’s a style of dance music for everyone, Australia’s own fallen angel Hellraiser is taking his undead dance blitzkrieg all over the world! Hellraiser’s infamous profile continues to pulsate and grow as he slides ever down the spiral of global infamy, being voted as one of Australia’s best hard edge DJs in the annual Technics/inthemix Australian top 50 four years running - Hellraiser is one of Australia’s first genuine export into the world of tough edged dance music. Also known for his releases such as ‘The House Of 1000 Corpses’, ‘The Outer Limits’, ‘Acid Noir’, ‘21st Century Whore’, and more, working together with artists such as the Engineer, Satyriasis, Kai Tracid, Kamui, Dj X (Lez – Lab4), and others. Hellraiser is now conjuring up his trademark dark & acid laced hard dance with one of the hottest new Dutch labels - ‘Theracords’!
PAGE 18
The mix CD You Only Live Once is really a celebration of ten years at Sneaky Sundays, but rather than putting together a retrospective Angus thought it was more appropriate to celebrate the future. It’s about capturing the spirit of Sneaky Sundays, the many people who have been part of it, and taking it a few steps further. About the CD Angus says “You Only Live Once is a mix CD series and a new dance music blog that will spawn a motherlode of parties around the globe - keeping the spirit of Sneaky Sundays alive for many, many years to come. “My disc, in the first of this series, is heavily influenced by the time I spent playing in big clubs during the European summer...it is a mix of party techno and throbbing house with many a twist and turn. So pretend you’re on the Terrace at Space in Ibiza, close your eyes and enjoy.”
So close your eyes and enjoy the You Only Live Once Tour with Black Angus! 0 6 November @ Syrup, Hobart
From his humble beginnings spinning acid & hardcore in Melbourne’s underground warehouse scene some fifteen years ago, this dark child has grown and mutated into the Melbourne based avenging angel we know today. His exploits have seen him rock crowds with his spine shattering performances as far flung as the UK, Holland, Switzerland, Wales, New Zealand, Japan and Finland. Seamlessly combining the aggressive aesthetics of techno and metal with the power of hard trance, hardstyle & acid, Hellraiser is an unpredictable and talented performer, and has been known to work anything from electro and grinding techno through to pounding hard trance, hardstyle and even hardcore into his sets. Pushing his secret blend of herbs and spices damn hard, Hellraiser’s own brand of aggressive hard dance & rock infused beats quickly transformed him into an in demand DJ, and he is also now spreading his message of darkness across some of the world’s most notorious clubs, events, and festivals.

DANCE - SYDNEY // WAX MOTIF
Waxing Lyrical
Another rising star of the DJ world, Wax Motif has already made big name fans like Ajax, wining celebrity remix competitions, and helping to bring hip hop and dance music a little closer. Also host of a Sydney radio show, we caught up Danny a.k.a. Wax Motif, ahead of his Tassie set.
“…[It’s fun] when I hear an awesome track or when someone is having so much fun on the dance floor they start getting naked, its good for a laugh!...” What’s your signature style? Party and/or Bangers. Best time you’ve had wearing headphones? When I hear an awesome track or when someone is having so much fun on the dance floor they start getting naked, its good for a laugh! Most outrageous thing you’ve ever done on stage? I shot about 30 Nerf darts into the crowd at Homebake from stage last year, but that probably as crazy as it’s gotten so far. I’m usually pretty wrapped up with deck duties while I’m playing. What do you hope is on its way out of dance music? Seriousness. So what do you think it was about your mix of Prgz’ track ‘Hood Celebrity’ that helped you win the remix comp? I just did what I felt when I heard the parts and I
think that came through in the song. With a lot more productions lately, what do you prefer, the studio or the stage? I’ll always prefer the stage but unfortunately production takes a huge commitment of time so that’s where most of mine has been spent of late. How do you decide what to play on your radio show? Its actually not a very lengthy process since I spend a lot of time listening to music to sets, and there’s so much new music every week I never really get stuck for choice ... ... so it just comes down to whatever I think is good or cutting edge. My favourite ones always get a couple of spins. What do fans have to look forward when you play your set in Tassie? Airhorns, laser shots and sirens. Don’t forget to Wax! 0 13 November @ Proller, Hobart MAY sMEEGAN
DANCE - AUS // NEON STEREO
What’s your signature style? My signature style is not being locked into any style. It’s all house music at the end of the day. During my sets I play anything from massive electro, to Dutch house, straight-up house and some melodic stuff thrown in there somewhere.
Spending a lot of his time in the studio, remixing for big names like Deadmau5, Steve Angello and Paul Harris, Neon Stereo finally stepped out onto the live stage in 2008, and begun sharing his mixes with the masses. Since making the leap, Neon has made an impression on Ministry of Sound with his hit track’ Feel This Real’, and now he’s ready to impress Tasmania!
Best time you’ve had wearing headphones? Whenever I hear an awesome track I’ve got cued up to play, and I just know the audience is going to lose it when they hear what I’m hearing, I end up with this cheeky grin on my face.
Turn Up the Stereo
Most outrageous thing you’ve ever done on stage? There’s been a few, but one that comes to mind is when I was partying with Micky Slim on-stage while he was in Sydney once and I poured his bottle of Grey Goose vodka over my head. He didn’t look impressed…but we sorted it out. What do you hope is on its way out of dance music? Kanye West shades and Baltimore music... actually how about Kanye West himself. I hope he never goes anywhere near Daft Punk again. Has playing in clubs as Neon Stereo changed your style at all? Yeah it’s been a huge paradigm shift. I was into a lot deeper stuff, which I now consider fluff, but since playing in clubs I like to make memorable tracks that really leave an impression. I guess a better way to also put it is that I’m making fewer “tracks” and focusing more on “songs.” What do fans have to look forward when you play your set in Tassie? A lot of partying... I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting Tasmania before, so you guys better show me a good time! sMEEGAN MAY See the Neon Stereo light up! 0 7 November @ Proller, Hobart

OUT AND ABOUT @ Hotel New York
@ Lonnies
UK SUBS + SUPPORTS @ The Brisbane Hotel, 11 October All I really new about the UK Subs was that their song ‘C.I.D.’ was a punk hit and that a few of the punk crew where pretty excited about seeing them live. Unfortunately I missed the first two bands, Devonport’s Mince Meat and local art rockers The True Spunks apparently, but luckily I got to witness Devonport outfit Smashed, and their delivery of some fairly tight rollicking punk tracks. It was crowd pleasing to say the least. The crowd was calling for more after each song and the strong female lead singer/ guitarist had a real and fresh attitude, not to mention a wicked voice.

Bumtuck played a quirky short interlude, I am looking forward to seeing this band play a whole set. Raucous locals Scurvy then ripped up the stage with some decently hot guitar action. This band really amazes me; their energy is intense and vibrant. The show was hot. They definitely warmed the stage for a band I was guessing they’d been listening to for years.
well behaved. There was a real sense of joy on the faces of the true fans. After all, did someone say the godfather of UK punk?
Led by legend Charlie Harper, The UK Subs have been touring worldwide and recording constantly for more than 30 years. We were all excited to be catching them live at the Brisbane. This wasn’t just snarly grumpy in your face punk rock, this was fist held high, power to the people punk. And the crowd loved it. The mosh pit was kinda rowdy, but

Charlie Harper snarled at me as he walked away from the stage, but I didn’t mind. At the end of the day it just felt good to be in the same room as someone, who according to the press release, appeared on 100,000 leather jackets.

HIP HOP - VIC // GULLY PLATOON
No Great Divide
With some people giving Gully Platoon the tag of “the first Australian hip hop supergroup,” it’s obvious that the band is packed full of talent. Made up of MCs Pegz, Dialectrix and Joe New, with DJ 2Buck in skilful support, the crew are currently experiencing a whole lot of “craziness” thanks to the Obese Records Block Party Tour. “It would definitely be me doing stupid immature jokes after an energetic show, getting hyped up on the adrenalin, and partying, having a couple of beers from the rider, there’s a lot of loud noise, a lot of freestyle rapping. I have a tendency to take photos of people when they’re asleep doing funny things… but that’s about as far as I’m willing to go in telling you the craziness of the tour.” Along with hip hop heavyweights such as Drapht, Muph & Plutonic, Illy and the Thundmentals, it’s no wonder Gully Platoon’s Dialectrix is having so much crazy fun. To be on a tour with so many other performers, even just his own group, is a bit of a change from a few years ago when Dialetricx left Down Under Beats to forge a solo path. “But I felt like seeing as though I’d done my solo and got my foot in the door that way, I thought I’d go and bring my mates along with me. Whatever success the solo was going to bring me, I wanted to bring my mates along as well.” The mates in question are former Down Under Beats crewmember Joe and seasoned MC Pegz. It all started as Dialectrix was finishing up his solo project, a time that featured a lot of support from his mates – particularly Pegz. “We were talking about crews that we were potentially going to make in the future. I was saying I was gonna make one, and he was gonna make one. And then as a hypothetical idea, I almost jokingly said to him that we should start a group together. We chucked it out there as an idea and started working on it loosely, and it all started to form very quickly into what ended up being Gully Platoon and the album The Great Divide.” The name Gully Platoon is loosely based on American slang for a street army, and seemed a perfect fit right from the start. And once the guys started rapping together under this guise, their differences and similarities seemed to form a perfect hip hop harmony, no great divide at all, as Dialectrix explains. “We’re all quite wordy MCs, technical in our own little ways. Pegz has a more profound metaphorical element to his raps, often they’re quite deep, he has a more slower more wellpronounced style. Pegz is the rock lyrically in the group, and I’m kind of like the hyperactive little balloon, a little bit quicker phonetic in terms of my rhythm and the way I rap. It’s a lot more hyperactive, so they bounce off each other well. Joe is like a balance between the two of us, having a really loose style, which experiments with all these different patterns. “Content wise, we’re all on the same page, but I think that rhythmically and as different instruments, we all bring a whole lot of things to the table.” Dialectrix also admits that perhaps the rapping styles also give a little bit of insight into the personalities of the crew and how they mesh together so well also. And when they do, it can be quite an intense stage experience for fans, the team effort meaning they can all give that little bit extra. “I hope people can come out to the Block Party. It gives us the opportunity to give 100% energy, without over doing it. If you’ve got three MCs who are used to doing hour long sets by themselves come out and do a 45 minute set between the three of them – you have so much more room to give 110% and not reserve anything, which is the best thing I like about being in the group. Live you can go absolutely spastic, exert everything you have, and not hold anything back.” So if you’re ready to go absolutely spastic with Gully Platoon, not to mention all the other great acts at the Obese Records Block Party, check it out below! 0 13 November @ The Brisbane Hotel, Hobart. . ASTRAL WINTER Illustrations Of Death
GRINSPOON Six To Midnight
MAMMAL Systematic Automatic Vol.2
PEARL JAM Backspacer
AW is a two-piece Launceston black metal band, which also blends elements of death metal to create their unearthly devilish sound. Josh Young, who composes the entirety of the music, creates a remarkably epic landscape for each song on the EP. Phil Hemsworth brings his unorthodox screech from the depths of hell as the vocalist for the duo.
First track off the list, ‘Dogs’, is definitely reminiscent of early days, with Phil Jamieson spewing his lyrics all over the place, and straightforward angry riffs from Pat Davern. Then the second track comes and brings down the thought of thinking that every track is going to make you swing off the ceiling lights like an induced lunatic. First single ‘Comeback’, another acoustic laden ballad, has as much of a life changing impact as a Dr.Phil episode. That said, I don’t believe there is any message in the song implying that they’re back better than ever, it is just another radio single lost amidst other tripe.
This release being the Melbourne band’s second live album and sure to please those who like to watch a band go ape sh*t on stage, smashing out their sound of funk induced hard rock. The release comes as a two CD set, one live DVD and a live concert CD. The live DVD filmed at The Ferntree Gully Hotel in April 2009, demonstrates why this bands name is spreading. From opener ‘Nagasaki In Flames’ to the closing song ‘Smash the Piñata’, their show is a tight, raw, aggressive rock, from a band that loves to play live. The only qualm I have is that the audio would all of a sudden drop down then pick back up again, possibly due to the mixer at the venue. It is not polished nor is it woeful bootleg quality - it is straight up how the band plays. The live CD is impressive, featuring most of the songs on the DVD, and some additional tracks. All songs were recorded live at The Annandale Hotel in March 2009. The songs ‘Religion’ and ‘Living In Sin’, that feature the violin accompaniment of Xani Kolac, are two tracks that provide the listener to recover until the next thunderous song unveils. Very much a well-compiled two-disc package, it is sure to please current fans and people interested in a different blend of Australian rock music. 8/10 sDAVID WALKER
The bands ninth album is what I would class as a fun album, full of pop/ rock and acoustic songs that answer neither the calls of reclaiming past success, nor begging of every song to be flogged on radio. Kick starting the album is song ‘Gonna See My Friend’, a rocking track, which is possibly about an individual that has a drug addiction and cannot surpass the withdrawal, so they see a friend in order to get a fix. The first four tracks produce the heavier rock side of the album, with the rest of the record having a more somber tone. ‘Just Breath’ and ‘The End’ are two folk riddled songs that make the listener think and reminisce of past memories.
They have produced, recorded and distributed this EP through their label Immortal Frost. All songs on the EP have the remnants of classic Scandinavian/ Finnish/ Swedish black/death metal bands with its infusion of rapid tempo drums, guitar, bass and outrageous keyboard playing, that feeds off the effect of a choir of angels chanting. Though black metal does not overtly grab my attention, simply as I can never understand what the vocalist is singing about or the overall concept. The music is well composed, and displays a high grade of talent. It would work solely as instrumental music for battlefield scenes of action films. The vocals I found were in comparison to a person singing while having asphyxiation and a bowel infection at the same time. 6/10 sDAVID WALKER
Track ‘Right Now’ would have been ideal for the first single, as this is what Grinspoon is known to do best - full throttle rock that makes people want to jig. Why they persist in producing acoustic ballads as singles is beyond me.The bands first three albums are great, but from there on it has been a different direction for what many might perceive as the wrong reasons, perhaps for commercial gain. What happened to the days of songs like ‘DCx3’ and ‘Black Friday’? The latest offering is mediocre considering the groups promising start. 4/10 sDAVID WALKER
I am not implying that this album is only worth the first twelve minutes of your attention. It is more that there is diversity in arrangement of songs so the listener does not feel they are listening to the same rock track repeatedly. The first single off the album is ‘The Fixer’, which is slowly growing on me. The band’s first three albums Ten, Vs and Vitalogy, I personally think are great, and from there on, I lost interest with the band. That being said, Backspacer definitely does have some decent songs, and they are ones that bring the fun back into Pearl Jam’s rock. 7/10 sDAVID WALKER

COMEDY - AUS // WIL ANDERSON
The Great Wilosopher
Known to most as the witty host of ABC shows The Glass House, The Gruen Transfer and his work on radio, Wil Anderson has most recently toured the country with sell out seasons of his show Wilosophy. Now your last chance to catch the show before the DVD comes out and he retires the material, Wil is heading to Tasmania this November.
life by how much happiness we brought to other people. I started reading that in Bhutan, they don’t measure Gross National Product, they measure Gross National Happiness, where they take into account needing economy, health, science, education and arts. I thought that was a cool idea, so I thought maybe I could do like a comic version of that. Take that idea and extrapolate on that. Take a look at our world and see what we’re doing badly, and see what our Gross National Happiness is. Now if that’s sounding too serious for people, I do want to point out that there’s lots of dick jokes. sDAVID WILLIAMS
Hi Wil, so where are you right now? L.A. What are you doing there? Oh you know, doing what people do in L.A., having meetings. That’s all anybody does here. I think even if a homeless guy asks you for money and you get a receipt, you can consider that a meeting. So, it’s the city of meetings. And I’ve been doing some shows and stuff while I’ve been here. Following the famous advice‘ you don’t have to change the jokes, you just have to change the audience, so yeah, just changing audiences. How is it going, are they appreciating you? It goes pretty well. I had to drop my blackface Jackson 5 routine, that hasn’t gone down that well over here. But the Aussie sense of humour, it’s surprising how well it goes. I think people are just happy to see you there. It’s been cool. There are some things you know you can’t do… in my show I’m taking out a ten minute Kevin Rudd bit. But it’s interesting to me – sometimes there’s a bit that you do at home, and you bring it overseas and it gets better. It’s like you have this little special child, and then you take him into a casino and he turns into rain man!
“…Wouldn’t it be good if at the end of our days, they measured our life by how much happiness we brought to other people...” To see Wil’s carefully constructed musings about the world, and a ton of dick jokes, check out the dates below. 0 5 November @ Princess Theatre, Launceston 0 6 November @ Wrest Point Entertainment Centre, Hobart
This is the Wilosophy show that you’re doing? Over here, I’ve pretty much been doing short ad libbed bits. The Wilosophy show I started in April in Melbourne, and toured it around Australia, took it overseas for a while. I’ve done a DVD, which comes out at Christmas, and I’ve decided that because I’ve done the DVD, and it’s my new show and a whole bunch of my old sh*t, that after it came out I wouldn’t do that material anymore, and set myself the challenge of coming up with all new material. It’s scared the shit out of me to be honest. So Wil, to what extent is the title Wilosophy just an umbrella to cover all the different and diverse topics covered in the show? I wish I was as clever as that. That is a brilliant explanation, but it doesn’t reflect the reality. When I do other interviews, I’m going to use your explanation, rather than the reality of what happened! Essentially what happened was, I got this phonecall from my agent, who said if I wanted to get into the programme for the Adelaide Fringe in March, we’d have to come up with a name for the show now and do some photos. There is no comedian in the world who has thought about their show title. You always end up coming up with these titles miles before you ever start writing the show, and usually by then the show reflects the title really well. What was the process of writing the show like for you then? When I was writing the show, it was just after a couple of friends of mine had died. I know that doesn’t sound particularly hilarious, but it was after they’d died – the thing that occurred to me the most was everyone saying how much happiness those people brought into other people’s lives.

Bold patterns and bright colours are so hot right now. Paired with lots of bangles dangles and sparkles, you are bound to turn heads. There are loads of current designers and clothing retailers turning out masses of great spring and summer wear, but it is also a great time to buy vintage. Keep an eye out for funky, brightly coloured patterns. 80’s pieces are particularly relevant, with similar cuts and styling to what is about at the moment. The catch is they are often made from higher quality design and material and will have a pattern more unique than what is available at the moment. Better yet, you can pick them up for a fraction of the cost of store bought pieces. This is a great time of the year to have fun with mixing and layering. Experiment with colour and texture, throw on lots of bling and wear layers to keep you warm in the notquite-summer weeks ahead. And don’t forget to head out for some fun!

ROOTS - MELBOURNE // JEFF LANG
Folk Disturbia
One of the leading Australian performers of roots music, Jeff Lang has been producing muchloved folk and blues albums for nearly twenty years now. With over 13 solo albums under his belt, Jeff tells us how his latest record Chimeradour was a little different than the rest. I was reading what I guess would be your own description of your music as “disturbed folk music”… I read that years ago, maybe 14 or 15 years ago, and it made me laugh, and just sort of stuck with me.
music, and you keep adding to it as time goes along. It happens in a natural way. I’m always listening ot new music and checking out things. If it really inspires you and you feel like you’re getting something out of it on a listening level, it’s bound to work its way in there in some way.
Do you find there’s something disturbing about your music? Well I’m not setting out for it to be middle-ofthe-road wallpaper music.
A Chimera (from the album title Chimeradour). Is that Greek Mythology? Yeah. It’s a beast that’s made up of the parts of three different other animals. So there’s the idea that there are different strains of music that feed into your sound when you write songs, and hopefully at the end of all that it comes out as its own creation. It had a resonance on that level.
What are you setting out for it to be? A journey. Ultimately you try and make music that would please yourself. I hope to make a record that if it wasn’t the record I’ve spent every second making and listening to intimately, that it would be the sort of thing that I would buy myself, and get something out of it each time I listened to it. The description goes on to say, “a tangled roots music stew.” I just wondered what kind of stew your new album is? Well there are certain things that have gone into my sound through the years and have remained there, like early blues music, rock’n’roll, folk
Was it an easy album to make? It was actually, it was an easy process. But at some point I had to kick my arse into gear and actually right some stuff. For the previous records it was just a process of collecting songs along the way, on tour or in the dressing room, on the plane, etc. and accumulate the songs over a period, and when I start to feel a little bit itchy really to make a record, low and behold I’ve collected enough songs. Where as this
time around, I was getting the itch, but I hadn’t actually really written anything (laughs), so I had to really discipline myself, and luckily it worked. In a three-week period I wrote just about all the songs for this record. I locked myself in the shed and told myself I wasn’t allowed to come out until it was done. Now the album’s done, you’re heading on tour around the country. Is touring a love for you? It’s something that I’ve always done, it’s just a natural part of it. I enjoy playing in front of people, it’s good fun. Are you still performing without a set list? For the most part. It’s hard to plot out what will be the best thing night after night, because each night has its own vibe…A little bit on the edge, and frought with peril, but just wing it. Wait and finish a song and just judge the right thing to do next is – and it generally works. sDAVID WILLIAMS 0 5 November @ Tonic Bar, Launceston 0 6 November @ Republic Bar, Hobart
