WHAT IS HYBRID LANDSCAPE?
- TRACE OF INTERACTION -
Non-professional designer can bring site with the alternative spatial aspect. Hybrid landscape encourages this non-professional designer to design something at site, where is professionally designed. The outcome of this can be unintended and endless progressive.
Hybrid landscape is a kind of design process between designer and users together. Their relationship is the most significant in this project and the design outcome shows the trace of their interactions.

WHAT IS HYBRID LANDSCAPE? HOW? WHY?
1.01. hybrid landscape with architecture _ Yokohama International Port
1.02. hybrid communication design _ Paris poster art _ Man & Woman
Hybrid: the prominent phenomena in contemporary era, for example, the form of energy consumption, food resource, biology and field of design.
The term of hybrid is very familiar in recent life. What is the hybrid exactly? Hybrid is one of prominent phenomena in contemporary period. The boundary of differences, methods, categories and different fields has become ambiguous. Hybrid is the combination with different areas and finds the answer of question from this. This can extend the domain of certain area and it proposes the new position in each area. Landscape is no exception from this movement. In the term of ‘Landscape urbanism’, it aims to merge the landscape as part of city components. This extends the field of landscape to the scale of city or the scale of world itself. Landscape architects should be concerned Landscape as a whole rather than a green open space. Moreover, this circumstance causes the ambiguous boundary between landscape architecture and architecture. Hybrid design between landscape architecture and architecture has emerged quite a lot, such as Yokohama international port. Hybrid landscape questions the role of design itself. The term of “hybrid” recognises the differences between its components, and it is concerned the intermediary position in between their differences at the same time. As a result, Hybrid is focused on the relationship between rather than each object. In landscape term, Hybrid recognises difference between designer and users, but it is focused on negotiation between each other without any structural hierarchy during design process. This is not only chaotic relationship, but providing the alternative regulation of connection. Moreover, this connection would avoid the traditional values and interacts with more dynamic elements. It results in defining the new spatial aspect and relationship. It is the thinking method with differences and fusion together. This can collapse boundaries and confuse diversity.

Physical participation of users is appointed in Hybrid Landscape design process
The physical participation of users is appointed in the design process. It suggests the alternative design sequence like the neutral process of designer-outcome-users rather than traditional hierarchy of designer then outcome. In other words, this focuses on the interactive relationship between designer and users. The active users in the process will experience a synaesthesia through physical participation, and the experience of users fill the space with non-determination. For example, the definition of place is not only a marvellous view but also a trace of physical experience. Furthermore, this significance discovers the alternative design process with combination between designer and users. The design outcome is progressive and impossible to predict in the future. Therefore, both designer and users feel unpredictable images and the physical expression is meaningful in this case. The users in Hybrid landscape can cause the direct transition, with emphasis on the interactivity of this circumstance. There are the characteristics of Hybrid landscape. First, it emphasises users on physical experience though the event occurrence. It invests the meaningful hierarchy via users’ interactivity. Second, Hybrid landscape results in the experience of that space. The place is not the ordinary space, but it asks the significance in the present space via the physical activity of users. Third, the design process is a top priority rather than the finished outcome like open end design. Finally, Hybrid landscape brings the unintended event from the active users.

1.06. ex) physical participation _ Lock fence has designed by users
1.07. ex) physical participation _ wish signpost, Japan
Hybrid landscape has designed by users’ physical activities. The outcome is totally unintended.
Lock fence at Seoul N tower is one precedent of Hybrid landscape. There are millions locks with the wish of people. The wish point is written on each lock. It is normally the object of perdurable love. Lock means our love has locked and never unlock. It may start one couple, but this place has become the most popular date course in Seoul. This changes the government to build Lock garden at Seoul N tower. Also, people, who leave their locks, think that Seoul N Tower is their memory of locks rather than only ordinary sightseeing space. It changes the spatial meaning of site to users as well. Moreover, increasing locks on the fence create the new spatial aspects. This is the unintended design by the activity of users. The other precedents are more controlled by designer. The wish signpost in Japanese temple is designed by people writing, but the space of signpost is already provided by designer. The act of writing is totally unintended and encourages people to interact physically, but seems to more passive way.

WHERE & WHAT & HOW IS DOCKLAND?
How people use Dockland currently? There is only passive usages existed at Dockland
In Dockland, where is the intervention site, the whole site is designed for the passive activities, such as sightseeing and public event area. Foreign and local travellers or number of local people come to Dockland for sightseeing, exercise and path way of their journey. Especially Harbour esplanade area is crowed by the difference of time and some special public event at the site. During ordinary week days, it is only the beautiful pathway, no more, no less. The site can accept the difference of event, but it is only passive use. This is because there is no physical participation of people in every event.

2.04. Graffiti in Alley at Melbourne CBD _ most popular hybrid landscape at Melbourne
What is the existing Hybrid factors at Dockland? Graffiti, passer-by....
There is a couple of design installation by Monash University. The design itself is designed to deal with the difference of human eye’s vision. The usage of this design is completely controlled by designer. However, the number of graffiti from people is written inside area. Most information of graffiti is for souvenir of visiting Dockland or the cheer of this design. Those graffiti showed the trace of physical interaction through users. It is not intended by designer and there is no end. A lot of graffiti can find in alley at CBD area. This is Melbourne style of hybrid landscape.
2.05. Surrealism Mapping of Dockland _ Collaboration workshop with Melbourne Uni
According to the anti-walk of DADA, the surrealism view of dockland is examined. With mapping exercise with random journey [the first criteria of anti-walk], the micro scale of map has been produced. The texture of surface, lighting and artefacts are recorded during random journey. It showed what the traces of current users in Dockland are. Number of bear bottle lids demonstrated the major behaviour of people in the site. Most of them might be drunk. Harbour esplanade in Dockland might be the popular space of drinking at the night time. Those artefacts are the massager of people, who drink bears. Moreover, those artefacts have become one component of map to show the usage of site. As a result, people, who leave the bottle lids, participated in the mapping exercise unwillingly. However, if designer invite most or some of passer-by at site to leave their traces willingly, it would bring huge potential of designing hybrid landscape at Dockland.

Basic components of “Trace in Dockland”
The main proposal is “leave your trace in dockland”. The empty space, which can place any trace from users, is provided to use it by users’ way. It can be graffiti, decorating and something else, which are unintended. The first initial design idea was providing a big white board to graffiti, due to the most popular cultural icon in Melbourne. However, the graffiti board can offer only graffiti to users. It is very limited event and it will result in the semi intended design outcome. Thus, in the intervention, numbers of clips has leaved to collect objects from visitors. The collections of objects cannot estimate and predictable. It should be fill the space with diverse of traces and this can attract the other people to leave their traces. This is completely the unlimited way of creating hybrid landscape and ideal for Hybrid landscape at Dockland. The method of attracting people to the design process is the most significant element. The signpost with “leave your trace at here” is installed to show how people participate in the process. There is one option that leaving samples for teaching people how interact this design, but this can be limited the way of users’ interactivity. The instruction of how people leave their trace is the most significant factor of this hybrid landscape. The social network, which is facebook, is the most useful feedback tool in this practice and it can be the online advertising tool to introduce “trace in dockland” practice. This is because it is a kind of electronic diary in contemporary society. The proposal sequence of “trace in dockland” follows this diagram. First, designer encourages people to interact physically by signpost or sample of trace. Then, people start to leave their traces and the other people follow this. After that, people visit Facebook page and write their experience of site. This route will repeat and repeat again. Finally, the site has filled by their traces and people, who leave their traces, will remember Dockland, where I leave my trace not just beautiful view of site.

3.02. Working process of trace in Dockland
Working process of “Trace in Dockland” “Trace in dockland” project has started since 15th September 2012 and it is still progressive now. A clip has chosen to hold users’ traces and installed next to the “colour ribbon”, which is other intervention. Three times of intervention happened by designer and there were number of trace has left by people. Three times of designer’s interaction progress to increase the level of limitation of physical interaction, such as leave samples and leave graffiti board.

On 15th September, approx. 30 clips installed next to the pink ribbon intervention. The colour of ribbon has a strong attraction to catch the eyes of people. This will lead to people come to the clip area easily. During installation, most people were interesting about interventions. Some of people asked us “what is going on Dockland?. It seems to be a good omen and we leave area as soon as possible after finish installation.

On 18th September, there were two trace has been leaved. One is a luggage ticket, which showed some travel to Melbourne. The other is just a litter. Due to pretty sunny day, there were a lot of people seating on the staircase next to the intervention site. However, no one was interesting “trace in dockland project. A disposable cup, which is rubbish, was added to encourage office worker to leave their cups here.

From the observation of site during three days, most of children are interested in this Hybrid landscape project. Most adults were busy to walk their way. Some of them just looked at the design. Without tout on the street, it seems too hard to attract adult people especially officers. Only children looked at the intervention closer and touched it. One child taking a ribbon, which is installed, showed the reverse way of physical interaction in the site. Taking not leaving can memorise him the space of Dockland, where I take a ribbon.

Successful hybrid landscape requires the strong interaction between designer and users.
The project “trance in Dockland” demonstrates clearly creating hybrid landscape requires continuous interest from users, long term process and endless interaction between designer and users. The outcome of Hybrid landscape reveals the trace of communication between designer and users. The development of intervention on the site is necessary because users tends to imitate someone did. There is a few alternative intervention occurred, but not many times. However, by the passage of time, some people could follow this alternative intervention and there would be the diversity of objects at the end. Therefore, Hybrid landscape cannot design in a short term. It requires a long time that many people interact with space. If a strong advertising media was invited, such as television, Hybrid landscape can build easier. For instance, lock garden at Seoul N tower displayed the popular love story drama in Korea.
The project of this Hybrid landscape crosses over the visible existence of form. It is focused on the complex existence of users and applies physical activities of users as major part of design process. Thus, Hybrid landscape starts from changing the perception of users’ role at landscape architecture. Creation of design can come out of hybrid landscape aspects, which is the endless interaction between designer and users. The outcome cannot be created by someone. It extract from the average of users’ interaction. This can extend the area of landscape architecture, and change the definition of landscape, such as landscape is drawn from the origin of people rather than reflect people in the landscape. The outcome seems to divide and disconnected each component, but it reveals the freedom with fragmentary combination of them. People could experience the mixture of diversity and they have become a part of open system in the form of Hybrid landscape. The design work of Hybrid landscape characterises as public area, not only private area for designer. Therefore, Hybrid landscape is focused on the relationship between designer, design and users. It is a kind of intermediary media between the hybrid components. The design outcome clearly shows the trace of interaction with those components.

WARRING
WEAKNESS OF HYBRID LANDSCAPE
There are a few weaknesses of hybrid landscape. The act of intervention might be disturbed by several reasons. To illustrate, the physical intervention of user might be against the regulation. Graffiti is the most successful Hybrid landscape at Melbourne, but it is illegal. The whole design process requires the sustain observation. Moreover, the process and the development of Hybrid landscape is strongly uncertain area. It might needs several countermeasures for an emergency situation. Unintended future of development can be most interesting part in this project and vice versa. Moreover, the way of encourage people should be related with cultural base. This is because the development of Hybrid landscape is extracted by the origin of culture surrounding area
