Marimekko | New York, New York Designed by architecture firm: Studios Architecture Marimekko, the Finnish fashion and lifestyle brand, commissioned Studios Architecture to create their store in New York City. The openness of the interior encourages a community connection, enticing passersby to enter and explore. Located in a 1909 Beaux-Arts building, the almost stark white interior serves to enhance the bold and colorful Marimekko prints. With garments hanging whimsically from the ceiling and racks stacked high, the space is a showcase for the essence and quality of Marimekko products and fabrics. featured product Retail Deign Blog: Sorbet Store In the Sorbet Store designed by SUITE arquitetos, retail lighting is effectively utilized without overpowering the interior. Johnston Memorial Hospital | Abingdon, Virginia Designed by architecture firm: Earl Swensson Associates, Inc. This LEED Gold facility boasts a transparent-feeling, five-story atrium of glass walls that brings in natural light throughout the interior of the facility and acts as a landmark for wayfinding. The hospital features a healing garden and outdoor dining area, reinforcing the facility’s connection to nature. Bali Lotus Villa Pavilion | Ubud, Indonesia The Bali Lotus Villa Pavilion features six spectacular inverted pyramid-shaped steel structures juxtaposed against traditional Balinese thatched roofs. One of the six structures, a Meditation pavilion, is situated on an infinity-edged reflection pool and is enclosed by full-length sliding glass walls that invite the surrounding nature inside. Selexyz Dominicanen Maastricht | Maastricht, Holland Designed by architecture firm Merkx + Girod The popular Dutch bookstore chain Selexyz takes on an adaptive reuse project by introducing a modern bookstore and café into a 13th century Dominican church in Holland. The interior is a “brilliant union between the opposing aesthetics” of the church’s historical architectural features and contemporary design style. featured product Thick Rustic Teak Slab San Juan Ventures San Juan Ventures specializes in reclaimed wood for flooring, sustainable furniture, and architectural elements. They reclaim their hardwoods from disused buildings, boat beams, and bridges in Indonesia, and many of these imported woods are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified and qualify for use in LEED projects. featured resource Published by Island Press, Stewardship of the Built Environment: Sustainability, Preservation and Reuse describes how historic preservation in the United States is an important sustainable design strategy by examining the multifaceted benefits of preservation and highlighting several case studies of exemplary preservation projects.
