ALBUM Releases Written by Kinsey Litton

florence + the machine ceremonials island records | november 1

Florence + the Machine burst onto the music scene in July 2009 with the release of its widely successful first album, “Lungs.” Lead by the beautiful, redheaded and very talented Florence Welch, the music is filled with instruments ranging from the harp to marching band drums to no instruments at all. The album went on to receive amazing critical reception including a number of awards and even more positive reviews. The sophomore album is said to be a better version of “Lungs” with darker, heavier, bigger drum beats and more of a united cohesive sound. If the first album is any indication of Welch’s skills as an artist, this second album is sure to blow true fans away.

2 mac miller blue slide park rostrum records | november 8

Though it is easy to categorize Mac Miller as just another young white rap star, this 19-year-old’s claim to fame is much different than most artists’ approach. Miller began in music at a young age and released his work in the form of EPs and mix-tapes for a number of years. After failing to reach the mainstream audiences, Miller took his fate into his own hands by connecting with fans through social media and the Internet. With his solid fan base that he frequently talks to and keeps in touch with, Miller was signed to Rostrum Records at age 18 in 2010 and is slated for his first full album this Nov. 8. If you’re a fan of Wiz Khalifa, Outkast, Lauryn Hill and Kanye West, be sure to check out his brand new album out this month.

3 rihanna talk that talk def jam records | november 21

Quite possibly the biggest female in pop, Rihanna has been on the Top 40 hit list for years. Originally from Barbados, Jamaica, she was discovered at a young age while singing Mariah Carey’s “Hero” at her school’s talent show. Many years and successful tours and albums later, Rihanna is still on top of her game with the release of her sixth album “Talk That Talk.” With some of the similar producers and influences from her previous albums, Rihanna is sticking to her bad ass, leather-wearing and boundary-pushing ways. Though she has received plenty of criticism for her out there and in-your-face style of performance and music, it is clear she has staying power and will continue to push the pop music boundaries for a number of albums and years to come.

4 common the dreamer, the believer geffen records | november 22

22 3

Though the release of this album has been pushed back a number of times due to his previous commitments to acting, Common has promised his fans a new album this Nov. 22. The entire album is produced by longtime friend No I.D. whose repertoire boasts the names of artists like Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Usher, Jermaine Dupri, Bow Wow and even more. With a focus on the positive things about hip-hop, Common’s newest album is said to be all about the true spirit and energy of the music. His style has always been socially conscious and filled with positive messages instead of the typical violent misogynistic hip-hop music. Though it has been three years since his last album, Common is sure to prove he’s still got it.

Video Game Releases Written by Glace Bondeson

4

Well, it’s November again and we all know that means a brand new “Call of Duty” game is on the horizon. With last year’s “Black Ops” being less than stellar, Infinity Ward plans to give the players what they want: “Modern Warfare.” The game consists of three main portions; a robust single player campaign, co-op spec ops and survival modes, as well as the award-winning multi-player experience. There is no doubt “Call of Duty” will be flying off the shelves once released, but with the launch of “Battlefield 3” just one week prior, it will be an all-out war for the top spot in this flooded FPS market.

6 halo: combat evolved anniversary bungie | november 15 | xbox 360

Ten years ago, a small company from Kirkland teamed up with Microsoft to develop a launch title for the software giant’s first game console. The game was “Halo,” which was released to a swarm of positive reviews from gamers and critics alike. Flash forward 10 years and it can be said that “Halo” is one of, if not the greatest console game of all time. On the 10th anniversary of the game’s release, Microsoft is re-releasing the game for Xbox 360, featuring improved graphics and physics and bringing the classic multi-player to Xbox Live. This is a definite pick up for anyone with an Xbox 360 and a perfect way to replay a classic.

7 the elder scrolls v: skyrim bethesda | november 11 | Xbox 360, PS3, PC

RPG fans across the world can all agree that the “Elder Scroll” series is undoubtedly one of the most engaging single player experiences in gaming. The newest release should be no different. Taking place roughly 200 years after the events of Oblivion, Skyrim is in a state of civil war after the brutal assassination of its king. You must fight for survival in the midst of war. And yet another danger is looming in the skies of Skyrim after a prophecy of dragons returning to the world and destroying humanity. Featuring a vast open world to explore and more than 150 dungeons to raid and conquer, your trip to Skyrim will indeed not be a short experience.

rejoice and shout november 1

This month’s romantic comedy had viewers raving all season. With an all-star cast including Emma Stone, Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling and even more talented actors, “Crazy, Stupid, Love” is perfect for all comedy fans. Centered around Cal Weaver (Carrell) and the current mess that is his life, he inadvertently turns to the ultimate playboy, Jacob (Gosling), for some advice. As Jacob helps Cal rehabilitate his broken ego and regain his game to win his wife back, we follow Jacob’s own surprising progression from playboy to kept-man.

Based on the best-selling novel by Sara Gruen, “Water for Elephants” brings audiences back in time for the story of Jacob Jankowski and his stint in the circus. With the untimely death of his parents, Jankowski (Robert Pattinson) leaves veterinary school just hours before his final exam to hop a train and join the circus. Upon realizing his veterinary background, the circus puts him to work training the newest addition to their circus team, Rosie the elephant. While spending time with his newest trainee, Jankowski is thrown into the wild world that is the circus as viewers are treated to beautiful costumes, fantastic acting and stunning visuals.

Gospel music has long been associated with churchgoers and religious fanatics on Sunday mornings. Little does most of the population know it is the root for a majority of the music we listen to nowadays. From Top 40 hits to back country honky-tonk music, gospel’s roots and origins in early American history have spread to and influenced almost every kind of American music. “Rejoice and Shout” explores the origins of gospel music and its lasting impression on the rest of our world. With interviews from Smokey Robinson and even more musical geniuses, music fans are able to trace back some of their favorite bands and the history that has affected their music.

30 minutes or less november 29

the art of getting by november 29

The longest running and most successful movie franchise in the history of film is now coming to an official close with the release of the final DVD in the eight-film series. With the conclusion of the “Harry Potter” film franchise, audiences get to watch as Harry must complete his final mission. With Voldemort on the rise and his powers growing stronger, Harry must find the last of the horcruxes containing his power and destroy them. Though a much darker film than the rest of the series, audiences get to see the final chapter in Harry’s story and say their last goodbyes to the characters that have been a constant throughout the past decade.

Loosely based on a surprisingly true story, “30 Minutes or Less” tells the twisted tale of a delivery pizza driver who is kidnapped and forced to rob a bank with a bomb strapped to his chest. Produced by Ben Stiller and filled with some of comedy’s funniest actors including Aziz Ansari, Jesse Eisenberg and Danny McBride, the movie is a non-stop riot with perfect improvised one-liners and on-point physical comedy. For a movie filled with easy laughs and some of comedy’s favorite players, “30 Minutes or Less” is the perfect film for that empty Friday night and your funniest friends.

Winner of the Official Selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, this quirky coming-of-age movie perfectly encapsulates all that is growing up. George, your typical high school slacker is filled with potential and has nowhere to apply it. Having perfected the art of skipping class and not doing his homework because he “finds it meaningless,” George is challenged by those around him to reassess his nonchalant ways. With a budding friendship with the beautiful Sally (Emma Roberts), George is forced to sort through the bullshit that is high school and find meaning in his life.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas 11/4/11 Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson Starring - John Cho, Kal Penn and Neil Patrick Harris

Can I just say that I am very excited about this movie? What do you mean, no? Well, I AM very excited to see it, so there. Now, let me tell you why. As you already know (or should know), I love very low-brow humor. Dick and fart. Gay and straight. Black and white. Pretty much any joke that is guaranteed to offend, I will love it and these films never disappoint with the offensive material, Therefore, I love them. For those of you who are unfamiliar with these movies, there is really nothing to them. Two stoners go on a mission for something or other and get into trouble along the way. Honestly, that’s it. I know it sounds boring, but it’s the trouble they get into that is ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome. This time around Harold (Cho) and Kumar (Penn) have accidentally burned down Harold’s father-in-law’s prize Christmas tree and must embark on an adventure to New York to find him a new one. Who cares, as long as Neil Patrick Harris is in it (or NPH, as I am going to refer to him for the

Written By Barlow Payne rest of this review.) Let’s face it, without NPH these movies would only be about half as funny. He rides unicorns, brands hookers, does incredible amounts of drugs and eventually gets shot in the back at a whore house and that’s just the first two movies. In AVH&K3DC we see NPH sipping cocktails with Jesus in heaven. That alone is reason enough to go check this out. Hell, that should be the tag-line, “Watch Neil Patrick Harris and Jesus booze it up in heaven”. Yup, I’d see it. For those of you out there that are easily offended by this kind of humor in a movie (sorry, Mom), I just want you to know that you’re the reason that these movies even exist (yes you, Mom) and for that I want to thank you. If it weren’t for the disgusted look on your faces, none of us cretins would enjoy it. OK, maybe we would enjoy it a little, but believe you-me, we relish the opportunity to help ruin your day one dick and fart joke at a time. I’m definitely going to go check this one out and I hope all my like-minded Neanderthals will be there as well, but if this kind of movie doesn’t do it for you...then lighten the #$%@ up, broseph. Jesus.

IMMORTALS

HUGO

THE MUPPETS

Picture all the best things about “300,” “Troy” and “Gladiator,” wrap them all up in one movie and “Immortals” is what we have. The story revolves around Theseus (Cavill), a mortal man pitted up against the evil warlord King Hyperion (Rourke), who will stop at nothing to obtain an ancient WMD. I love movies that are half myth and half awesome and I am pretty sure this movie will entice both sexes as it has half-naked men running around and said-half naked men being brutally slaughtered. I think those are some good reasons to check it out.

Martin Scorsese, you go girl! Look at you being all grown up making a children’s movie. For those of you who are cinematically retarded, Scorsese is best known for very dark dramas such as “Casino,” “Goodfellas,” “The Departed” and “Taxi Driver.” Hugo (Butterfield) is an orphan boy who lives in a train station in Paris in the mid ‘30s, who must uncover a secret left by his father in the guise of a toy robot. With Scorsese at the helm, I can pretty much guarantee that this movie will not disappoint.

It’s about @#$%ing time. I love these movies so much. So does that make me a little biased? Of course. So what? Yes, I know these movies aren’t for everyone, but they should be. This time around, the Muppets have fallen from stardom into anonymity. They must get the proverbial “band” back together and do their best to get back into the limelight. Yup, sounds like a Muppet movie to me. Plus, Jason Segel is in it. I believe him to be one of the funniest people in Hollywood today. No, you don’t have to believe that too, but you do have to get the hell away from me right now.

11/11/11 Directed by Tarsem Singh Starring - Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke and John Hurt

11/23/11 Directed by Martin Scorsese Starring - Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Lee

11/23/11 Directed by James Bobin Starring - Jason Segel, Amy Adams and Chris Cooper

imaschine iphone

(Price: $4.99)

Want to make your own music but have no idea where to start? IMaschine solves this issue, kind of, allowing you to create your own loops and beats on your iOS device. The interface of the app can be a little confusing at first, but with a day or so of playing around with the app, it becomes familiar. Featuring 16 programmable pads, you have the ability to create song ideas wherever you are and save them for later use. You can even upload the music to a computer for further editing and tweaking.

Anyone who has used a tablet computer can admit that using an onscreen keyboard can be difficult, especially if you have tiny hands. Swiftkey eliminates this problem and allows users to type with their thumbs, while not having to move your hands out of a holding position. The application splits the keyboard down the middle, providing easy access to all keys with minimal effort. With the added space in the middle, there is an added number pad, similar to the number pad on a traditional keyboard. Swiftkey also scans your previous messages and saves common terms and phrases used to predict text and make tablet typing all around more efficient.

potify might be one of the services killing the music industry, providing unlimited music for a monthly fee, or it might be helping to save it. Before Spotify, I had not paid for music in years, but having the access to their extensive library and high quality streaming audio, I could not pass up the opportunity to use Spotify’s services. The best thing about it is that you can have an unlimited amount of play lists and music saved, but it takes up absolutely no room on your phone’s hard drive, allowing for an entire new world of musical possibilities.

AQUA by EL GAUCHO Written by Jacklyn Tran Photography by Sam Cook Cakes, muffins and cookies may be part of the same baked goods family as pies, but as alluring as they each may be, they have nothing on the versatile pie. Sweet or savory, a meal, snack or dessert, pies can fulfill many a toothsome purpose. Beyond dessert, 35 percent of Americans say they’ve had pies for breakfast, 66 percent have had them for lunch and 59 percent have had them as a midnight snack, according to a survey conducted by Crisco® and the American Pie Council. The average American may eat six slices of pie each year. However, a trip to any of the following pie specialists will have you coming back for more, ensuring that you far exceed the yearly average.

WWW.AQUABYELGAUCHO.COM 2801 ALASKAN WAY, PIER 70 SEATTLE, WA 98121 (206) 956-9171

The legacy of the El Gaucho restaurants with Seattle roots dates back to 1953 and is one that includes exquisite food, impeccable hospitality, a swanky allure and a memorable dining experience. Since 2000, El Gaucho’s sister restaurant, Waterfront Seafood Grill, had been a hidden jewel, operating in the shadow of its more well-known by name sibling restaurants. Last month, however, the Waterfront Seafood Grill stepped out into the spotlight when on Oct. 6, they opened their doors for the first time instead as AQUA by El Gaucho.

22

AQUA by El Gaucho, with a family past that is richly embedded in Seattle’s history, now provides customers a subtly revamped, warm and vibrant interior that features modern artwork and aqua colored walls to enhance the already extraordinary waterfront views. Beyond providing a sensational view of Elliot Bay and the Olympic Mountains, exceptional service and an elevated form of fine dining, AQUA by El Gaucho is also just as proud of its many charitable contributions to several great causes around the city. From preparing and serving a total of more than 7,500 donated lunches to Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission to contributing wine dinners and gift cards to organizations such as the Seattle Aquarium and Camp Korey. The mission of Camp Korey is to honor the courage and determination of families dealing with childhood illness and serious medical conditions and to provide these children with a safe environment to simply have fun. With giving back to the community being an integral piece of the company’s values, AQUA by El Gaucho has created a charitable match

We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.

program that allows them to participate in any organization’s request for donations. For every gift card an organization purchases, AQUA by El Gaucho generously matches that and also donates an additional gift card at equal value. Today at AQUA by El Gaucho you will find some of the newly inspired takes on cuisine by executive chef Peter Levine and some of the classic dishes found on the restaurant’s original menu more than a decade ago, all handled with care by the talented kitchen team who according to their Web site, utilizes three distinct cooking methods in an open kitchen stocked with a wood stone oven, plancha griddle and charcoal grill. Sautéed calamari ($15) was a vision of vibrant color. Herb and panko bread crumb coated calamari with toasted almonds, garlic, cumin and a pinch of red chili flakes sat in an ultra-smooth, spicy, smoked tomato sauce. The Seafood Indulgence ($50) was indeed an extravagant treat of Maine lobster, chilled prawns, meaty oysters, snow crab claws, wakame seaweed salad, ahi sashimi, Dungeness crab fry legs, wasabi and red tobikos served with a variety of sauces for your choosing pleasure.

Air, Land and Sea ($76) was an impeccable arrangement of a beautifully smoked duck breast that was salty and succulent, a filet AQUA (their signature steak) that melted in your mouth, topped with porcini mushrooms, panko and a touch of bone marrow and a stunning colossal West African prawn grilled to perfection, its excellent handling apparent from the long and delicate antennae that were still intact even though it traveled across the globe, through the kitchen and to the dining table. Amazing Plancha Seared Scallops ($38) were nestled on a heap of creamy, wild mushroom risotto surrounded by a rich red wine sauce. The oh-so-divine, bone-in New York strip steak ($78) was 16 glorious ounces of certified Prime Angus beef and was confidently touted by Chef Levine as, “quite possibly the best steak dish in the city.” A decadent and proper Bordelaise sauce with rich little chunks of bone marrow made each bite a moment to treasure while the crispy Portobello fries were pleasantly addicting. The Emerald City Volcano ($20 small/$35 large) was served expertly as a Baked Alaska or double chocolate and Bourdeaux cherry ice cream, spongy, vanilla génoise cake, all covered in meringue was flamed tableside and finished with a drizzle of chocolate sauce for delicious mouthfuls of warm meringue and cold ice cream.

TOFU

AGEDASHI TOFU NIJO

Written by Kate Opatz MAKING TOFU

Tofu is made by coagulating soymilk. In commercial tofu, the most common ways of making this happen is with the use of salt or acid. The choice of coagulant is an important determining factor in texture. The three main types of fresh tofu, silken, firm and Chinese “dry tofu,” are differentiated by the way the curds are processed. Soft tofu is curdled in whatever package it is sold in. Firm tofu is first strained to remove some liquid and then pressed gently. Dry tofu is pressed even more than firm. Each type of tofu is both high in protein and low in fat. Though alone it’s rather bland, the options for spicing it up are endless and can make it a tasty treat.

26

Thanh Son Tofu In Seattle’s International District, there are more than a respectable number of options for fresh tofu. At the Vietnamese deli Thanh Son Tofu, warm fresh tofu can be purchased in bulk. Lightly fried green onion or chili and lemongrass tofu offer an exceptional amount of flavor for a small amount of money.

For a change of pace, the tofu dish at Nijo comes cold. It’s almost salad-like, with avocado and a topping of bonito flakes and seaweed. With ginger dressing, it’s refreshing and quite healthy.

BAKO

I’ve yet to see a version of this I wouldn’t slurp on in a heartbeat. Dusted with cornstarch and fried golden brown, the silken tofu comes served in a hot broth. The broth softens much of the fried outside and the result is a salty, soupy delight.

At the brand new Bako on Capitol Hill, tofu comes stuffed. Currently it is filled with eggplant and mushroom and served with a chili plum sauce. It looks a bit like a sandwich and tastes great.

All I remember about my first meal at Joule, years ago, is the smoked tofu. The smoke flavor is restrained and works out to be a perfect foil to the umami of honshimeji mushrooms and soy-truffle vinaigrette.

Northwest Tofu

MONSOON

IN THE BOWL

Like Thanh Son, Northwest tofu makes tofu in house. You can buy it by the pound, but eating it at the café is really the way to go. There’s fresh soymilk and congee, but the star is really the salt and pepper tofu. Fried crispy, the inside stays so delicate that you can convince yourself it’s healthy.

There are a multitude of reasons to go to Monsoon for brunch. There’s the best pho in town, of course, as well as a fantastic wine list and a new and improved banh xeo (essentially a Vietnamese crepe). But if you really need one more reason, it’s the crispy tofu. With broken rice, mushrooms and of course a fried egg, it’s nearly a meal in itself.

Everything this place does with tofu is fantastic! The tofu satay is marinated with herbs and coconut milk and grilled. Every curry and stir-fry dish can come with fresh or fried tofu.

MOMIJI At just-opened Momiji on Capitol Hill, tofu comes fried with tomato and okra in a sweet and spicy sauce or in ginger chili sauce with sautéed veggies.

The Sweet (and Salty) Life Written by Kathy Casey Trying to figure out what to give everyone on your holiday list can be hectic. Don’t you sometimes wish you could be a kid again, when a homemade card and a clay sculpture were the most meaningful gift anyone could receive? While I don’t recommend a crayon-illustrated card (unless you’re a Picasso with wax) for your boss or a papier-mâché dragon for your mother-in-law, you can definitely DIY some classy gifts this holiday season that are just as much fun to make as they are to give. Baked goods and tasty treats are always welcome under the tree, but why not mix it up this season and give some homemade gourmet salts and sugars

28

DIY Sweet Citrus Salt instead? Not only are these a cool project, your creativity is the limit for the flavors you can make. DIY Sweet Citrus Salt imbues Fleur de Sel with the zingy-sweet essence of fresh lemon and orange zest, but you could also use grapefruit, key limes or even exotic Buddha’s Hand. Flavored salts are fantastic to rim a cocktail glass with, sprinkle on fish, steamed veggies or even top a sweet cupcake with a few flakes. Fresh herbs and flowers play nicely in sweeter applications. For a fragrant rosemary sugar, mix two tablespoons of fresh chopped rosemary with one cup of superfine sugar, then let air dry for a few days and whizz

in a food processor or blender. Flavored sugars add subtle notes to baking, confections and also as a cocktail rim. Try different flavor pairings for your sugars, like cinnamon and sage, lavender and thyme. Tailor them to your giftee’s particular taste for the ultimate bespoke gift. Once you’ve made your salts and sugars, look around antique shops or online for pretty jars and bottles to fill with your creation. When you find that perfect vessel, tie a little handwritten tag around the neck with twine and voila! A thoughtful, crafty and elegant gift for this year’s giving season. -Kathy

I like to make this with coarse Fleur de Sel, but you can make the entire recipe with kosher salt too.

Makes about 2 cups • zest of two lemons • zest of one large orange • 1 1/2 cups kosher salt or Fleur De Sel • 1/2 cup kosher salt • 1 cup granulated sugar With a potato peeler, peel the lemon and orange, removing the colored part of the skin, but not the white pith. Cut peel in very fine strips, then mince (reserve fruit for another use). In a large, shallow, glass baking pan, mix citrus zest and salt together and leave

uncovered in a warm dry place in the kitchen. Stir a couple of times a day. Let sit at room temperature until the citrus peels are thoroughly dried. This should take about three to five days. Once zest is dried in the salt process, blend in a Vita Mix blender until the citrus is just incorporated. Add the remaining salt and sugar and process again, pulsing a few times. Store in a dry, tightly covered container at room temperature. Recipe by Kathy Casey www.KathyCasey.com

CANON

Written by Aleko Lilly Photography by Sam Cook SOMETIMES IN LIFE, LESS IS MORE. HOWEVER, AT CAPITOL HILL'S NEWEST IMBIBE DESTINATION, MORE IS MORE! There is literally nothing the discerning cocktailian can’t find at Canon. Nothing! Whether it’s the opportunity to blow an entire week’s pay on an ounce and a half of whiskey or the desire to drink a premixed and chilled cocktail directly from a miniature flask, Canon has got you covered. You can also find an “experiment” presenting three mini Manhattans each with a different vermouth, Japanese whiskey in a ceramic pig, seven kinds of Willet and cases of Angostura bitters splashed throughout. There is, quite simply, one of each. Despite having nearly every trick in the book, owner Jamie Boudreau isn’t finished. There is a hundred page cocktail list in the works and a projected expansion from a mere 500 types of liquor to nearly five times that. Canon (full name, Canon: Whiskey and Bitters Emporium), aims to have the ultimate selection. It is an ambitious project to take on such a definitive mantle, but Boudreau is making a fine go of it.

30

Jumping into what many would see as an already overcrowded cocktail scene running along Seattle’s 12th Avenue, Canon lands in full stride. It’s not just the impressive selection, the serene surroundings or the bitters-stained bar top that fulfill the prophecy; it’s the elegance and the execution of the concept. Canon is a beautiful space, filled with dark wood, shiny shakers, strategically placed candles and glittering crystal, all making for a warm, comfortable room that demands to be enjoyed with a cocktail in hand. For now, in lieu of the hundred-page menu, Canon’s cocktails come off a single, double-sided sheet. Eight cocktails, ever changing, always intriguing, set off by a diverse, diminutive beer list. While the cocktails may be different every time, the guarantee is that there will be a healthy dose of whiskey and bitters, as witnessed by the one constant; the sublime, simple Canon Cocktail. Rye and Ramazotti topped with Cointreau foam and a dash of the ever-present

The24 “Is Space hours Needle in a dayhad andthe 24 second beers in revolving a case a restaurant coincidence? in the I think world, not.” built ` Unknown` in 1961.

Angostura bitters make for a tantalizing play of sweet and tart before plunging into the bittered heat unmistakable to rye whiskey. No matter how good the cocktails, a bar is only as good as its barmen and Boudreau has amassed (himself included) many of Seattle’s finest. From the legendary Murray Stenson to Brian Lee and Nathan Webber, also Tavern Law alums, there can be no doubt the cocktails are served with exceptional subtlety and style. What differentiates Canon is that beyond all the trappings of cocktail nerdery, it is purely a place to go to enjoy a drink. Boudreau says he wants Canon to be little more than a cozy neighborhood bar, albeit one with the ability to satisfy each and every drinker’s individual needs. While this may seem a bit hard to believe, you do get the feeling that were he sitting at the bar instead of mixing drinks, he’d go straight for the Bitty Bitter or Boilermaker hiding surreptitiously at the bottom of the beer list.

STRICTLY FOR THE GROWN Written ANDbySEXY Elisa Beall Photography by Sam Cook

The Suite Lounge brings sophistication back to the night scene.

I can account my change in taste of clothing, men, music and food directly to my growing age. The same can be said of the venues where I choose to spend my nights and weekends. I used to count down the minutes in my work schedule till I could slide into a cocktail dress and stilettos and cut the line into the newest club. There I could unwind with a shot, my favorite DJ blasting industry Top 10s and dance my way to the next club. Â Nowadays I find the very thought of attending a club stressful. And with a growing work schedule, I don't want to be forced into catching up with friends I rarely see, through screams over the DJs music. Needless to say, scouting out a venue that could offer me a club atmosphere, minus the club, knocked off the first spot on my to-do list. Whispers of a newly opened cocktail lounge, catering to an older more sophisticated crowd, spread throughout Bellevue. Without hesitation, my note pad and critical

eye ready, I decided to check it out. As I waited for the owner of Suite, I could tell there was a grand view encased between the tinted glass and wide double doors. I was not disappointed after they swung open to reveal a Las Vegas worthy interior. Couture ceilings glowed a rainbow of colors, accenting the black and white diamond-studded furniture. The layout resembled more of a chic restaurant than a lounge. A giant flat screen hung

discreetly toward the VIP private section. All of this sophistication was tied together by an island bar. No dance floor, no DJ booth. The music played just low enough to converse with friends or business colleges. The Tapas-style menu also reflected Suite's sophistication, serving small family-style portions of everything from seafood to salads. The fully stocked bar offered a small selection of beers on tap, wine by the glass or bottle. Along

with just about any well or cocktail drink you can conjure up, I suggest the Seattle Manhattan. The booth's dining tables p o p down f or b etter comfort and each table is adorned with fresh roses. Â This is definitely a relaxing, comfortable and refined venue to spend nights and weekends. A perfect getaway from the loud, peoplepacked clubs with a demographic in the late 20s and 30s.

GENEROUS BEATS LOCAL ELECTRO-POP DUO VIPER CREEK CLUB GIVES LISTENERS THE MEMORY-MAKING JAMS THEY WANT WITH A NEW EP

Written by Joe Gustav Photography by Casey Sjogren If it is true that memories are the best gifts of all, then Viper Creek Club is in a giving mood. The Seattle two-piece electro-pop band of Mat Wisner and Brandon Jensen seeks to give fans what they want on their upcoming, currently untitled EP: fun. The kind that begs to be experienced live. “It’s more like blasting you for 30 minutes,” Jensen said of the new material set to debut at the end of this year or in early 2012. The first LP, 2010’s “Letters,” was a more restrained and at times moody outing. Charting on Puget Sound radio tastemaker KEXP’s Northwest Top 10 and receiving college radio spins nationally, listeners gravitated to the rich compositional textures adorning electronic pop music’s typical tones. However, no song received more burn than single “Eliza,” the project’s most up-tempo number. The aching lyrics may read like a plea at an intervention, but the insistent chorus is anthemic and instantly memorable. These attributes serve as the blueprint for the new EP. “I was like, let’s make a bunch of ‘Elizas,’” Wisner said. “It didn’t necessarily go that way, but it’s in that vibe. It’ll be more fun live, especially when we go to festivals. The coolest live shows are like that: up-tempo, kind of pop.” Grabbing fans in a festival setting is a must. “We think about it, what are people going to have fun to?” Wisner explained. “If it’s a showcase of people who are unknown and just rocking it, then a shit load of people will get in there. Then all of a sudden, you’ll do five or six of those in a week and Spin starts writing about you. When we go to the festivals, that’s what’s going on and as an

Think positively to make a difference.

independent artist, that’s one avenue where you can thrive.” Upon initial listen to the first leak from the EP, “I Want You To,” VCC is certainly looking to throw the kind of memorable, high-energy sets that capture attention at indie-industry showcases like CMJ (where they played last year) and SXSW (where they plan to perform again this spring). A shouted chorus encourages audience sing-a-longs as the lyrics in general keep it simple, doing away with “Letters’” darker undertones. The track is anchored by a big, stomping electro beat. Viper Creek Club worked on honing its new direction in Anaheim in September for the Windows 8 launch show. They played to thousands of attendees, opening for Ra Ra Riot and We Are Scientists, but the audience at that Windowsrelated gathering is miniscule to the one they will have when the new software launches in 2012. “Letters” is licensed for online promo and VCC is featured in one of the Windows 8 music tiles. The audience that will see and hear Wisner and Jensen via Microsoft means is colossal: Windows 7 is closing in on 500 million copies sold and a developer preview of Windows 8 was downloaded 500,000 times within 12 hours of its release. The opportunity came about from friends who were working on the campaign. “They listen to it in the office and they have been for a year or so, then people heard it,” Jensen said. “They stuck it in as a placeholder basically and wanted to keep it so they contacted us. “Our friends are super good supporters.” Viper Creek Club is doing its best to support

other local acts across all genres. In 2011 they released a collection of Northwest hip-hop remixes, “ViperLust,” in partnership with Seattle rap label Members Only. VCC gave its take on cuts by the likes of Fresh Espresso, Sol and Blue Scholars, and gave it away as a free download, a gift to fans and new friends in the city’s hip-hop community. They also individually help record, mix and master albums for other artists; Jensen lends his production talents to Seattle hardcore bands such as Monster Monster. “With the hip-hop stuff, we work with smaller artists and they’ll even ask me for advice and stuff,” Wisner said. “I’ll still work with them and that’s the most important thing. If we think someone is good and talented, we’ll still work with those people and we’ll continue to do that. I’ll give them free beats. “That’s part of the community of music. People have reached out to us, like Mad Rad put us on their release show and we weren’t as big as them. Hopefully we can do that for others. For the whole Seattle music scene, that’s why hip-hop is good here. Everyone is reaching down to whoever is good.” Outside of Viper Creek Club, Wisner dropped a solo project, “Cobras,” in October. Jensen is sitting on a wealth of solo material (“‘sad bastard’ music,” he stated), but has no immediate plans to release any. Both are focused on taking advantage of the opportunities they’ve been given as VCC and to continue giving fans what they want; the kind of musical experiences that make lasting impressions, what some would consider the best gift of all.

Viper Creek Club has a gift for you. Take a sneak peek at VCC’s new EP and new direction. Catch the world premiere stream of “I Want You To” at the DList blog.

Make a Difference in Music Music is one of the first programs on the chopping block during budget cuts at public school and community centers. Thankfully, a myriad of local non profit organizations have stepped up to help encourage children, teenagers and beyond to explore the creativity, emotional release and joy that music brings, whether playing it or experiencing it. As non profits, these organizations need your help, especially during tough economic times. And your time is just as valuable as your money! Here are some great programs in Seattle that need volunteers and donations. Even if you have no musical talent of your own, you absolutely can contribute. Get off “Guitar Hero” and make a real difference.

DECIBEL DISCOVERED Playing music is supposed to be fun. Dude York, this month’s Discovered pick, gets that. A sly irreverence punctuates their output, such as pausing mid-song during a recent live set at the Comet to ask the score of the game and titling their September EP “Satanic Vs.” (English majors much?) What’s no joke is that they’re good and only getting better at crafting a rambunctious brand of garage pop. But enough from us. We’ll let Dude York introduce themselves. Who shall follow the esteemed footsteps of Katie Kate and Dude York and get Discovered? You tell us. Send us your nominations on Twitter @DListMagazine #Discovered

NOVEMBER 10

The Hip Hop & Love Tour @ The Crocodile with Murs, Tabi Bonney, Ski Beatz & The Senseis, McKenzie Eddy, Da$h and Sean O’Connell. Presented by ReignCity Few musicians in any genre have been able to turn independent success into lengthy, successful careers. LA-bred rapper Murs is undeniably one of those artists. His winding path through the underground has taken him from Def Jux to Warner Brothers and now to Bluroc, Damon Dash’s new venture and where Mighty Murs is now Vice President. Running a label must not be as hard as it sounds, especially for the guy who put together Rock the Bells, because Murs just dropped a new album with producer and tour-mate Ski Beatz, “Love & Rockets Vol. 1: The Transformation,” has a behind-thescenes book coming out about the project and is working on a comic book, all amidst a massive 46-date tour. Murs caught up with DList while on The Hip Hop & Love Tour. Go to www.hiphopandlovetour.com for more info and www.thecrocodile.com for tickets.

DLIST: You’re a vocal advocate for positivity and social change. What's Hip Hop & Love's place in making all this happen? MURS: I don't think there's ever been a rap tour that's put the word "love" in the headline. Hip-hop and love, that's what my life's been about and most everybody in the tour's lives have been about. Loving hip-hop, loving love and bringing a positive and unique experience to every city we go to. We have Sean O'Connell, playing some rock and electric folk. Da$h doing “The Caveman Files,” which to me is like some ghetto dubstep meets some screw music. McKenzie Eddy is like some Erykah Badu, Joni Mitchell, I can't even describe her style. Then we get to Ski Beatz who does live renditions of his hip-hop records, then we have Tabi Bonney and then we have myself. We have a whole spectrum of different types of music, but it's all one positive progressive energy.

DLIST: Like you said, it's a really diverse crew of musicians and it's sponsored by Adidas. How did the whole tour come together? MURS: It came from me meeting Tabi Bonney and Tabi introducing me to Damon Dash. He was very interested in getting his groups out on the road and I'm pretty well-versed in putting together a tour. He brought in Adidas and also agreed to help me put out a new record because I've been trying to figure out how to expand my brand, my message and my art and get it out to more people. Who better to partner with than Damon Dash? DLIST: You're one of those artists who seems to prefer working with a single producer over the course of a whole album. What kind of dynamic does that give your work versus bringing in a bunch of different beat makers? MURS: That's how great records get made. Quincy Jones producing Michael Jackson records, Organized Noise producing OutKast

The "If I were Space invited Needle to a had dinner the second party with revolving my characters, restaurant I wouldn't in the world, showbuilt up." in ~ 1961. Dr Seuss

records, Prince Paul producing De La [Soul] records. It just provides for an environment. It brings different people into your world. With 9th Wonder, I think, he brings a little bit of his own world into it and maybe Ski [Beatz] brings a little of his own world to it. I'm still searching and especially in this album called “The Transformation,” I'm moving towards achieving my own sound and you can't really achieve that unless you have one solid producer.

GETTING TO KNOW: JAMES RILEY Written by Sheena Nguyen Photograph Jane Gershovich

From being a board member of the Special Olympics, to making weekly visits to "Hope Place" throughout 2011 to support troubled women and kids at the Union Gospel Mission and being a key organizer of the annual 7-A-Side tournament benefiting the Boys & Girls Club, Seattle Sounders FC’s Humanitarian of the Year, James Riley, has his hands full in terms of off-the-field responsibilities. Not to mention that Riley is also an integral member of the Sounders on the field, leading all the Seattle field players in terms of minutes played. But for Riley, soccer and the community have always gone hand in hand. According to Riley, his involvement with the community stems from his mother and how she raised him. “I was very fortunate to be exposed to soccer and had a lot of very good family friends who would pick me up from practices, drive me to games, feed me and let me stay at their houses while my mom was working long hours”, he said. “That’s pretty much where my community credit comes from. Playing soccer at a young age let me see people on teams come together and support each other.” This is the reason that Riley has become a tremendous supporter of the Renton/Skyway Boys & Girls Club even though he did not grow up around one. Riley’s biggest recent project was the 7-A-Side Youth Soccer Tournament where 100 percent of the proceeds go to the Boys & Girls Club. This year, more than $15,000 was raised. “It was a great event that brought a lot of different people together to benefit something that is terrific,” Riley explained. “I feel very fortunate it was a huge success.” He also credits Katie Pendleton of Gorilla FC and Richard Martin, his marketing manager, who have gone full throttle to support the event. Because Riley does so much for the greater Seattle area, it’s easy to forget he is not actually from the Emerald City. He’s actually from Colorado Springs, Colo. That fact doesn’t stop him from being the most altruistic person he can be in the city he’s in. Riley has a way of bonding with the community wherever he plays. That has been true since he played college soccer at Wake Forest where he regularly did soccer clinics. “Whether I’m playing in Seattle or any other city, I’d probably be doing the same thing,” he added. “Seattle just makes it very easy. I take a lot of responsibility in going out to play soccer in front of all the people at Century Link Field and I feel equally responsible to go out in the community and show the community support. This city has so much energy, good vibes, it gives so much support that I think it’s only right to reciprocate that energy and give back to the community.”

As a Seattle Sounder, Riley definitely understands the impact he has on the community. “You’re obviously recognized and you want to be recognized for good things and your good nature,” he explained. He also recognizes that his first responsibility is to the Sounders to be well and stay fit, which he prioritizes in his day-to-day schedule. “I wake up around 8, go to training around 9, get prepared to train from around 10 to 12 and from there my schedule varies depending on whether or not I have an obligation that afternoon,” Riley stated. “Rich does a really good job at coordinating things for me. We like to plan ahead, but sometimes I like to be sporadic. Sometimes I just like to go to the Boys & Girls Club of Renton Skyway to see the kids smiling. I can never have a bad day with them so I definitely feel fulfilled.” In addition to soccer and giving to the community, Riley also finds time to enjoy the city he has done a great deal for on and off the pitch. “I like to relax and hang out with friends,” he said. “My girlfriend and I like to be low key. We’ll walk the dog a lot around Green Lake, get together with friends for dinner and drinks which is always a good time and the team is also very close knit so a lot of the guys will get together and hang out and do something away from all the pressure and tension and Century Link Field.” He is also a big fan of the local culinary scene. “The ability to go have happy hour food is amazing.” Riley has seemingly found the perfect balance between everything he loves in Seattle and it’s apparent in the energy he exudes whether he’s playing soccer or being involved in the community. It’s also most likely a contributing factor in getting him the Humanitarian of the Year Award for the second year in a row. The award went to Riley not only for what he has done, but for all that he has in the works as well, consistently going above and beyond in community events. In fact, he’s already looking forward to the year ahead. The third annual James Riley event that will be held next year is already being planned. In addition, he is working with DList Magazine in doing a benefit at Lucky Strike with the potential beneficiary being the Special Olympics since he was newly elected to the board. “We still have a lot of plates spinning right now so we’ll see what happens."

A BENEVOLENT NEW REIGN Written by Joe Gustav Photography by Nate Johnson

It's been more than a decade since Shawn Kemp wore green and gold, but the Reign Man is as much of a Northwest fixture as ever. Now he focuses his efforts on giving back to the community - and giving Seattle back its Sonics.

F

or one thing, we're talking during his charity basketball tournament, the 13th annual Reignman Classic, attended by current Northwest hoops favorites Jamal Crawford and Isaiah Thomas (see "Time To Give" on page 44). The event draws its name from the handle given to him by famed announcer Kevin Calabro. The Reign Man, a title indicative of his dominance and exceptional athleticism during his hey-day as a power forward for the Seattle SuperSonics. Kemp anchored a team that would go on to an NBA Finals showdown against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 1995-1996 season, and in the championship averaged 23.3 points per game versus the team with the best regular season record ever. A remarkably athletic 6'10'', his brand of big-man ball made him a six-time NBA All-Star. He recorded what is undisputedly one of the greatest dunks ever when he threw down a tomahawk jam over Alton Lister. Kemp would go on to play in 14 NBA seasons, but following a high-profile contract dispute that ended in a trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1997, he suffered all too human problems. Several comeback attempts into professional basketball came up short. Now, while the Reign Man may still call himself "a work in progress," he is showing a dedication to charity and community work that is well above normal. Even with his playing days behind him and the ghost of the Sonics still haunting heartbroken Northwest fans, Kemp is as adored as ever. At this year's Bumbershoot, a packed KeyArena gave him a standing ovation during his cameo in Macklemore's set. Kemp is reciprocating the love as much as he can by being an involved community member. Though originally from Elkhart, Ind., he calls Seattle home. He and his wife of 11 years, Marvena, host the Reignman Classic as a benefit for the Franklin High School's girls basketball team. They also own Oskar's Kitchen, a bar and restaurant in Lower Queen Anne that is nearing its one-year anniversary. Kemp mentors current NBA athletes. And maybe most exciting of all for hoops fans, Shawn Kemp is working hard to help bring an NBA team back to Seattle. This all adds up to a generosity and involvement in his community that is far from regular. DLIST MAGAZINE: We're sitting here at the Reignman Classic, now in its 13th year. How have you kept this tournament going for so long? SHAWN KEMP: All the work goes to my wife [Marvena], man. [laughs] I get the luxury of having this event, she has the luxury of putting it all together. She's got the hardest job. I've

been able to help her out throughout the years. We really do it to support the community. We both play basketball. I play basketball, she plays basketball. We play at Greenlake sometimes during the summer. We play all around the area. We've been playing and being a part of the community for so many years now that it's a way that you give back, but it's also a way that you stay well-connected with the people in the community. D: You're not from Seattle originally, but you're very involved here. What's it about the Northwest that brought you back? S: My wife and her family is my family and we've been so well-connected with each other for the last 11 some odd years that this is home for me. This is home. We're from Indiana, but I consider it home. The Northwest is great. It's the reason why I've chosen to live here. Not just because of the fan support, just because it's good people in the Northwest. I enjoy living in the Northwest, I enjoy doing business and working with the people in the Northwest that I've always entertained and played for. My life is always a work in progress, so for me to always do well and keep rising, I like to stand by with the community and be as normal as possible, man. D: What's your involvement in bringing back the Sonics? S: My role in bringing back the Sonics is to support every cause and everybody that's in the process of trying to bring the Sonics back. I think it would be very wrong for me to do anything otherwise, to be with one group or one person, so I try to work with all the guys. The Save Our Sonics guys, they're some of my good friends. I work with them more than anybody, but I support all the groups around here that are trying to bring back the Sonics because that's what we should do. In order for them to come back, everybody is going to have to work together to find the solution. D: So what is the solution? What's the proper way to go about getting an NBA team again? S: The proper way is that, for the city of Seattle to really get the team back here, it has to be a thought-out process where

Seattle Center is totally redone. You can't come back and just redo KeyArena. My whole goal was always to bring in some high-rise condominium buildings, a new shopping center and a new arena. In the Queen Anne area, it seems to me that there are so many apartments, why not come in and bring in a high-rise building and then create some revenue and jobs? It's bigger than just the Sonics. That whole area needs to be redone. And if they do that, I think it could pay for itself. D: What is the lockout's effect going to be on those efforts? S: It slows things down. If people are interested in buying into a basketball team, they aren't going to be so interested now if guys are on strike. That's the way it is. You have to wait until things get back rolling in the NBA and I think the interest will grow. Last year when the playoffs ended, the interest was very high in the NBA. The NBA championship with LeBron James and the Dallas Mavericks, they had so much attention and it's sad to see the attention go away because of the lockout. The truth of it is, the people who pay for it are the fans. D: What's your feeling on the lockout? Do you think we'll lose the whole season? S: No, I don't think we'll lose the whole season. It's too much. I think around Christmas time, these guys will get back on the court. But then again, the fans are excited for basketball season in October and November. If it's Christmas time, they're upset. They want basketball now. To get our basketball fix, we have the University of Washington Huskies. And we'll have another Kemp in the area playing basketball very soon. [Shawn Kemp Jr., Shawn's oldest son, is a 6'9'' freshman forward on the UW basketball team.] [Laughs] Yeah! He's at the University of Washington, doing well. The most important thing is he's working his butt off. By him doing that, it will give him an opportunity to blossom. I hope that people can see what I see inside of him and if he keeps working his butt off I

think good things will happen. D: You've been working your butt off at your restaurant, Oskar's Kitchen, which is nearing a year since opening. S: Yeah, right around Christmas time it'll be a year. It's a lovely, good project. It's taken a lot of work. I actually did a lot of the work myself gutting the place out and remodeling it. The main thing of it is, I wanted to start off small and not too big because it was important for me to learn about the little things, like how a kitchen works and how the bar works. We didn't make as much money right off the bat as what I think we could have, but we were able to mastermind our menu, find out what kind of food we want to cook, drinks we want to serve, what time we want the happy hour, sponsorships in the neighborhood. We took our time to find out a lot of the little things and the restaurant now is kicking off at a pretty good speed and it's a joy. It's joyful for me to be able to put together a project and working it myself hands-on. D: Is that your favorite part about owning a restaurant? S: Yeah. I don't think it would have been the same if I didn't build it. For me having something to do with the construction of the restaurant, it means more to me. D: Do you have plans to do more in the industry? S: I've thought about it. I've been thinking about maybe expanding into the East Side, but it's been so much work with the one that we have that I haven't had a whole lot of time to think about it. I like to be smart in the decisions that I make and never go around and do too much. I'm going to take my time and make sure I do it right. D: I hear you've been instructing some NBA ballers during the lockout. Who have you been working with? S: I've been working with Spencer Hawes a lot this summer. It's been fun to get back on the court and work with some of the guys. That's when you have the most fun to me, on the basketball court, still. The restaurant is great, but I still love coming to the court and playing ball. D: You seem to be making a real effort to be involved and helping whatever causes you can. Why is that so important to you? S: I'm always doing charitable stuff and supporting people. Jamal Crawford just had a back-to-school fundraiser. We're always out supporting the community in whatever they do, it really never stops. It's important for me to do that because I like to be part of the community. I like to be looked at as just a regular person, not just Shawn Kemp. I think when you start doing the little things like that, people look at you as a regular guy, man. That's what it's about. amal Crawford and Isaiah Thomas are two Northwest ballers a t very different points in their careers. Crawford is an established veteran entering his 12th NBA season. Thomas is a rookie waiting to play his first professional minute and hoping to become an NBA mainstay after being selected as the final pick in the NBA draft. Both are waiting impatiently for the end of the NBA lockout, a work stoppage that has put the upcoming season in jeopardy. Even though they're itching to get back onto the hardwood of NBA arenas nationwide, Crawford and Thomas are staying busy. In between working out and playing pickup, both are involved in charitable efforts. DList caught up with them after their team won this year's Reignman Classic.

What have you been doing during the lockout? Just working out, staying in shape and being patient. Hopefully this thing can be over soon.

What have you been up to during the lockout? Just working out. Chilling. I go to school at UW, finishing up my degree.

Is the Jamal Crawford Foundation (www. jamalcrawford.org) busy at work during the lockout? Oh yeah, but we do that anyways. We have trainers at Seattle public schools, we had a back-to-school backpack giveaway, we had a summer program and we're doing some stuff with the mayor as far as attendance goes. We're doing stuff all the time.

This is your rookie season and it's going to be shorter. What are your thoughts on that? It sucks! It feels like I'm still in college, man. Nothing's really changed for me. I'm still around UW, still around the teammates over there. Hopefully they settle something soon.

Does the lockout give you more time to be involved? Yeah, it definitely gives you more time to pursue interests you already had. I think that as long as it goes I'll continue doing things I want to get into. When you get back to work, what are you looking forward to in the upcoming season? Well I'm a free agent, so I have to sit back and decide where I want to go and how I want to go about that after the lockout settles. Anything else you want to add? I love DList Magazine!

Isaiah Thomas

How do you keep persevering through it? I just keep working. Stay on my regular schedule, work out, play video games. Are you doing any charitable work? I did about three or four camps this summer for kids in the area, but I'm done with that now that everybody's back in school. Knowing everything you do now, would you have stayed at UW for your senior season instead of leaving early for the draft? Not really. I feel like it was my time to go. It would have been fun to go out my senior year and be with the fellas, but I feel like I was ready for the next level and that's what I wanted to do. I'm going to patiently wait and see what happens. If not, I've got some options overseas if the lockout does last a long time.

GIVING AND GLITTER Written by Steven Dolan Photography by Danielle Bortone-Holt

Goodwill is a longstanding nonprofit organization that integrates retail and charity. This month, the Dearborn Street store will be teeming with shoppers who in their pursuit for glamour, will also be giving back. On the weekend of Nov. 12 and 13, crowds of shoppers will descend upon the International District hoping to purchase something with a bit of sparkle. While navigating a sea of glitter, some will strip down to bodysuits to streamline the process of getting dressed. They come f o r t h e 28th annual Goodwill Glitter Sale at the Dearborn Street Goodwill. The Seattle Goodwill, as it is called within the company, is the largest of the Goodwill retail stores, featuring a special sale area reserved for events such as the Glitter Sale. “You could call it our flagship store,” noted Betsy McFeely, Goodwill’s Public Relations

WWW.SEATTLEGOODWILL.ORG/ SHOP/STORES/SEATTLE 1400 SOUTH LANE STREET SEATTLE, WA 98144

Director. Sitting on the edge of t h e International District, the store is accessible to both the Downtown and South Seattle communities. All year, merchandise is gathered from stores and donation centers to be purchased by the magpie-eyed Glitter Sale shoppers. “There’s a lot of great energy and people are having fun. It’s something different and of course it’s for a good cause,” McFeely said. At Goodwill, the cause is the integral component of the retail chain, not simply an additional one. “[Giving back] is exactly what fuels our mission,” said regional director Paul La France. Net proceeds from the sales of donated

items—including clothing, furniture and electronics—directly fund the free job training and education programs that Goodwill provides. McFeely emphasizes education between people, in the hopes that people will come to Goodwill not only because thrift shopping is “trendy,” but also to be a part of giving back to the community. The Glitter Sale furthers Goodwill’s mission, as all proceeds benefit the nonprofit’s programs. Last year’s sale generated funds of more than $158,000. On Nov. 9, the Fourth Annual Glitter Gala will be hosted at the Sheraton’s Grand Ballroom. The Gala—featuring a champagne reception,

a three-course dinner, a raffle, a silent auction and a fashion show featuring looks that will be available for purchase at the Glitter Sale—is yet another fundraising push to support Goodwill’s job training and education programs. While the Glitter Sale might be something of a frenzy, McFeely says it’s all in collaborative good-natured fun. Whether it come in the form of parentchild teams or simply passing an item to another lusting shopper, the culture of giving at Goodwill still stands, or rather, shines.

VY NGUYEN

+ CHLOE & DILLON

Interview by Steven Dolan Photograph by Dana Jonas Produced/Styled by Kayleigh Capelle AGE: 25 OCCUPATION: Student/Producer for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fashion Show DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE: I came from Vietnam and my style has a lot to do with where I came from. And we are a tropical country so it’s hot all the time, so we only wear jeans and T-shirts, very basic chic, very casual urban style all the time. And I carried that style over when I came to Seattle. WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? Obviously where I come from and the school that I go to. I go to the Art Institute of Seattle, where the style is a little bit more New York, a bit more sophisticated. I don’t [dress like that] all the time, but occasionally I do. HOW DOES THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST INFLUENCE YOUR STYLE? Seattle is extremely casual so I have to think twice if I want to do something very shocking or a pop of color or something extremely in style. I don’t think people in Seattle notice when you wear something in season. It tones me down a little bit, even when I go out at night. It’s different when I travel to New York or LA. I can be more crazy with the hair, with the makeup, more layers and accessories. WHAT’S YOUR IDEAL OUTFIT FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN? If it’s not cold, I prefer to have a oneshouldered, tight, body-hugging dress and a really nice pair of high heels.

WHO ARE YOUR TOP 3 FAVORITE DESIGNERS? I love Valentino when he was still around. I think it’s very elegant. I love Betsey Johnson for certain occasions. Her style is very playful. And Marc Jacobs, I love Marc Jacobs. WHAT THREE ITEMS FROM YOUR WARDROBE WOULD YOU SAVE FROM A FIRE? My little black dress, my black belt and my long bebe military-style jacket. HOW DOES CHLOE & DILLON FIT INTO YOUR WARDROBE? I like the basic stuff at the store because they carry Splendid, the brand, which is a really nice brand when it comes to basic T-shirts. I like their jeans. I think they have a lot of good skinny jeans. They would go really well with my oversized big shirts and I think they would go well with my style. FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP: Nordstrom is the way to go.

pussycat dolls feat. carmen electra snoqualmie casino| november 4 The Pussycat Dolls began in 1995 when choreographer Robin Antin decided to create a modern take on the burlesque-style dancing and performance. As the group grew and gained more fans, the Pussycat Dolls went from performing in night clubs and bars to recording multi-million dollar albums and partaking in tours with Britney Spears and a number of other artists. Though the original Pussy Cat Dolls are no longer together (most are pursuing solo careers), Antin’s touring group contains all the sassy moves and songs for Pussycat Doll fans to enjoy. This performance, featuring the lovely Carmen Electra, is sure to have fans begging for more… literally.

paramount theatre | november 4 & 5 Kathy Griffin’s career began in the late ‘80s with stand-up routines and small parts in movies. Thirty years later and a New York Times Best Selling book, a successful Bravo TV show and appearances in various shows and movies later, Griffin has proved her staying power in this commonly male-dominated genre. With a comedic style that often pushes the boundaries (and offends the lighthearted) her routines are in your face and fearlessly funny. Check her out at the Paramount Theatre to get your daily dose of her surprisingly true-to-life and hysterically funny stand-up routine this November.

The release of their first collaboration album in 1996 received rave reviews on their ability to integrate their two personal styles into an iconic, and played to this day, album. The two have continued to collaborate through the years (under the name Black Star) and consistently prove why they have and will continue to be a presence in the hip-hop industry.

Listen to more than music. Listen when you think it's quiet, and you'll discover it's not really all that quiet.

IADT-Seattle held its 6th Annual IMAGINE Fashion Sept. 30 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. With the theme "A Symphony of Fashion," the show began with a musical performance by the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra (SMCO). The host for the evening - Teresa Gonzalez, News Anchor/ Reporter for Univision Seattle, KUNS-TV - welcomed the audience of more than 500 in a gown designed by student designer Julius Leano. There were four categories: Daywear-Sportswear, Cocktail, Alumni, and Evening Wear & Bridal. The models walked a runway designed by Eduardo Khawam of Metropolitan Fashion Week, third-time director of IMAGINE.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21 EVO 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

FREMONT COLLECTIVE Photography by Paul Israel

Over 1500 neon-coated snow goers maxed out the capacity at the recently renovated Fremont Collective, where they celebrated evo's 10-year anniversary party with the second annual Winter Fashion Show, a vintage snowboard gallery, and hip-hop performances by Seattle's Fly Moon Royalty. While the line ran around the block most of the evening, guests were able to relax in the Spy Optics RV while waiting, and were greeted with drink and food options from Bluewater Vodka, House Wine, Revel and New York Cupcakes once inside. Whether guests were flying off the mechanical bull, dancing outrageously or posing for the USNAPS photo booth, evo made sure no one left without having a blast. Many thanks go out to the sponsors that made this event possible, including Burton, Ride, Nike, K2, GORE-TEX and Bonfire.

BEAUTY OVER CANCER Written by Kinsey Litton Photos by Brian Baker

This month for our Giving Issue we set out to find local individuals who are helping out our community in unique and personalized ways. Beauty Over Cancer is a local and ever-growing charity centered around the idea that femininity and beauty can overcome the setbacks of cancer and chemotherapy. Ali Boyd, the founder (and cancer survivor) began this charity with years of make-up and industry experience under her belt and hopes that she could share her talents and help those women who felt their outward appearance didn’t match up with their inner beauty.

How did your charity come about? At the age of 36, I was diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer that only four in one million women over the age of 60 are diagnosed with. The odds of me being diagnosed, let alone surviving, were less than 3 percent. While enduring a radical hysterectomy and intense chemotherapy I found myself engulfed in a conversation with another patient about our professional careers. As the woman to the right of me overheard the conversation and realized what I did for a living, she asked if I could answer some makeup questions. In that moment, I was inspired to help other women through this journey. What is your goal as a charity? Beauty Over Cancer was founded on the belief that feeling better about how we look helps us heal. We want to be the industry leader in beauty techniques (from head to toe; skincare, hair care and makeup) for people living with the effects of cancer therapy. To promote healing by improving individual experiences and creating a sense of well-being. We would like to make this a country-wide and even global movement if possible. What kinds of services do you provide for cancer patients? We provide a number of services including skin care, make up application, head shaving, how to wear scarves and wigs, and custom cuts and colors for people just diagnosed with cancer as well as a number of services for recovering patients as well. Our services don't end until after your treatment does. We will trim or cut your hair as it grows out to ensure you remain confident and of course beautiful!

82

For it is in giving that we receive.

I know you are growing day by day. Where do you see Beauty Over Cancer in a year? Within the next year, we would like to gain 501(c)3 status and have a presence in 30 salons within the NW region and on our way to spreading nationally. We aim to be the voice that bridges the gap between patients and the wealth of resources available to them. TOP: BOC Founder Alicia Boyd ABOVE & BELOW: Before & After photos

What can our readers do to help? Most importantly, we would love to find someone able to donate time and resources to help us gain 501(c)3 status so that we can approach private donors and corporations for financial support. Donations are also appreciated! We could use licensed cosmetologists to volunteer time and unopened cases of makeup and skincare products. Any salons interested in getting certified by Beauty Over Cancer are welcome to contact us! www.beautyovercancer.org
