FLEET FOXES HELPLESSNESS BLUES SUB POP RECORDS, MAY 3

This Seattle-based band came to prominence in the underground indie folk scene in 2008. Its music incorporates out-of-this-world vocal harmonies and baroque instrumental backings with perfected musical talent. After taking almost three years to produce a second album for eager listeners, Fleet Foxes is sure to please former fans and gain new ones with this newest album. For fans of the Shins, Bon Iver and Animal Collective, be sure to check out the Fleet Foxes new album in stores May 3.

THE KING OF LIMBS 2 RADIOHEAD SELF-RELEASED, MAY 9 For Radiohead’s eighth studio album, the group decided to do things just a little differently. Thought to be named after a giant oak tree in Wiltshire’s Savernake Forest, Radiohead’s newest album was first released as a download in early February. As one of its shortest albums to date, “The King of Limbs” contains only eight songs and just more than 37 minutes of music. Though short on music, it is full on sound. The album has received rave reviews by critics who claim the album is “a fanspleasing eighth album from Britain’s most consistently brilliant band.”

LIL WAYNE

3 YOUNG MONEY, MAY 17

THA CARTER IV

Lil’ Wayne cannot be beat. From hit singles while in prison to Grammy Award-winning albums, his own record label with three of the top 10 highest 2010 hip-hop album sales and nine studio albums, Lil Wayne’s success seems unstoppable. His newest album, “Tha Carter IV,” is sure to contain his notoriously sick beats, fun collaborations and clever lyrics. If Lil Wayne has proved anything, it’s that he will be around a while… so we better get used to it.

GAGA BORN THIS WAY 4 LADY INTERSCOPE RECORDS, MAY 23 No one needs an introduction to Lady Gaga. Even living under a rock couldn’t shelter you from the new Queen of Pop’s reign over the musical kingdom. Though only on her second album, Gaga has taken the world by storm with her chart-topping songs, tabloid-worthy antics and crazy outfits… or lack thereof. With her beautiful voice and songwriting talents, Gaga’s second studio album is sure to bring all the glitz and glamour of the first one and then some. Her first single off the album, “Born This Way,” has broken numerous records by securing the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts in more than 17 countries. Her album, like everything else she does, will be over the top, mind-blowing and absolutely fantastic.

THE DILEMMA MAY 3

Kevin James and Vince Vaughn star in this month’s comedic DVD release. It centers around Ronny’s (Vaughn) discovery that Nick’s wife is cheating on him with a much younger and sexier man (Channing Tatum). Ronny must decide whether to reveal his discovery or keep his best friend’s focus on their work presentation coming up. The movie is filled with Vaughn and James’ usual comedy and sprinkled with insightful almost bleak realizations about the nature of marriage and relationships.

THE GREEN HORNET MAY 3 Based on the widely successful 1930s radio program and comic book, “The Green Hornet” stars Seth Rogen as Britt Reid, a rich playboy determined to ruin the name of his successful father. When his father shows up dead from a bee sting, Reid and his trusty sidekick Kato decide to infiltrate the crime scene by posing as criminals while fighting the good fight. Also starring Christoph Waltz and Cameron Diaz, “The Green Hornet” grossed $227 million dollars and topped the box office opening weekend. A must see.

THE ROOMMATE MAY 17

BLUE VALENTINE MAY 10 “Blue Valentine” is the heartbreaking and sobering story of a marriage that’s falling apart. Starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, the movie follows the couple from their very first meeting to ultimate destruction of their relationship. Though somewhat depressing, the movie is a beautiful love story minus the makeup and the high-budget bullshit. While preparing for the movie, Williams and Gosling moved into a house together to form a believable relationship and even ended up improvising much of the dialogue in the movie. For a beautiful, well-made, mustsee movie, check out “Blue Valentine.”

12

NO STRINGS ATTACHED I AM NUMBER FOUR MAY 10 MAY 24 After finishing her hard work on the Oscar and Academy Award-winning movie “Black Swan,” Natalie Portman teamed up with funny man Ashton Kutcher for “No Strings Attached.” This movie is your backwards love story about a couple of friends who decide to be just friends… with benefits. The movie is well-written and shows off hidden comedic talents we didn’t know Portman had. This is a good movie that will make you laugh.

“Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.” - Buddha

This sci-fi film, based on the novel by Jobie Hughes and James Frey, tells the story of an alien from Lorien (Alex Pettyfer) sent down to Earth with eight others to avoid the destruction of his planet. Directed by D.J. Caruso, this big-budget film is jam-packed with action and amazing CGI effects. The film filled theaters and grossed more than $123 million. Also starring in the film, Diana Agron (“Glee”) plays Pettyfer’s innocent love interest. Combining the brilliant brains of Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg, “I Am Number Four” is entertaining and mind-reeling.

A remake of the 1990s classic “Single White Female,” this 2011 scarier and sexier version takes place in the college dorms. Two roommates (Minka Kelly and Leighton Meester), are placed together at the beginning of the school year. As time passes, Sara (Kelly) begins to get a bad feeling about her creepy psychopath roommate. With kick ass fight scenes and suspense that will make you jump, the “Roommate” is that perfect thriller for a Friday night.

THOR

Written By Barlow Payne

5/6/11 Directed By - Kenneth Branagh Starring - Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins and Kat Dennings I wanted to hate this movie so bad. Superheroes already have an edge on regular human beings, but Thor takes it to the next level. Gamma rays, mutation, even the sun are some of the things that give superheroes their power. But not the mighty Thor. Oh, no. Thor is a god. The god of thunder, to be exact. Does anyone else think that this is cheating?! I mean, what the hell? Apparently, run-of-the-mill super powers aren’t enough, they had to make him a god. So for those of you that don’t know the standard (Marvel) mythology, Thor is a Norse (Viking) god. Thor and his brother, Loki, are the sons of Odin, pretty much the end-all-be-all when it comes to the gods. Odin rules over Valhalla, a mythical place where soldiers who die in battle are said to go. There’s a small background for you, now here’s the story. Thor is the defiant, allbeit loving son of Odin, but when Thor gets the idea to go out and do battle with the Frost Giants, it angers his father and Thor is banished to Earth, stripped of his powers and his trusty weapon, Thor’s Hammer, Mjöllnir. This

is where things get complicated. Now, Thor is stuck on Earth powerless, hammerless and with the ego of a Viking god, he has to get back into the good graces of his father and prove himself worthy to regain his power. But little does Thor know that his brother, Loki, is planning on overthrowing the throne, killing their father and destroying Earth. There are monsters and villains aplenty in this film and they all look pretty cool, so far. Like I said in the beginning, I wanted to really hate this film. I always thought Thor was the lamest superhero in the Marvel Universe, because, well... He’s not a superhero. He’s a god and I feel like that’s a cop out. What’s next? Are we going to see “Jesus Christ: Vigilante?” But I digress, the movie actually looks really good and they got a world-famous Shakespearean actor to direct it. Let’s hope he brings some of his “epic-tragedy” panache to it and leaves out the melodrama. Personally, I can’t wait to get hammered. Wow, that was bad, even for me. I apologize.

THE HANGOVER PART II

PRIEST

What a surprise, the highestgrossing comedy in history is getting a sequel...and I am OK with that. This time it’s Stu’s (Helms) turn to get married and the wedding is in Thailand. That’s right, Thailand. And no, he is not marrying the hooker from the first one *sad face*. The crew, plus the bride’s little brother, decide that it’s a good idea to go out for drinks before the wedding because this has worked out so well for them in the past. They lose the brother, Mr. Chow and Mike Tyson are back, there are new tattoos and hair cuts, etc. I’ll take it.

Desolate future. Priests. Vampires. Pretty much “Mad Max” meets “Underworld.” Meh, I don’t think this one has the legs. I think it will be pretty and all, but I don’t think it will have any substance. Sure, the actors are quality, but I’m worried about the director. This is the man that brought us “Legion.” Like I said, pretty with no substance. Not to hold his past sins against him, I just find that if the director can make things pretty to the detriment of the story, he isn’t doing his job and that is a hard habit to change.

5/26/11 Directed By - Todd Phillips Starring - Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms

5/13/11 Directed By - Scott Charles Stewart Starring - Paul Bettany, Karl Urban and Maggie Q

LAST NIGHT

5/6/11 Directed By - Massy Tadjedin Starring - Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington and Eva Mendes Just one big dramatic wife swap movie. Something that has been done a million times with a few little tweaks. I will not be seeing this and neither should you, if not for the reason that it is being released in the United States last. Also, I think Sam Worthington is a really lame actor and can’t emote past just reading what’s on the page. Anyways, no, I will not be seeing this. It can go die.

JOULE

A JOULE MAY BE A UNIT OF ENERGY IN THE PHYSICS AND SCIENCE WORLD, BUT TO THE MANY FANS OF JOULE IN WALLINGFORD, JOULE, THE RESTAURANT, IS KNOWN INSTEAD AS A SHOCKWAVE O F INVENTIVE GASTRONOMIC ENERGY.

Written by Jacklyn Tran Photography by Sam Cook Beyond the golden-yellow hue of the Joule façade, the clean and contemporary atmosphere of Joule with its high ceilings and minimalist decor is reassuring and cozy. On a recent evening as I settled into my seat at the restaurant, relaxed and ready to enjoy a meal, I was unaware of the culinary shakeup that I was about to experience. Having heard so many great things about Joule and having experienced a nibble of its goods at a friendly chef competition a few months back, I knew going in that my dining experience would be a satisfying one. What I hadn’t anticipated was the thrill I would encounter in each step of the way. As the offerings of the Korean and Frenchinspired menu jumped off the page, an electric charge sparked within me as my tastebuds began to tingle from the word-candy, before having tasted, let alone having ordered a thing. My relaxed state leapt from calm to excitement as the appetizer of

cucumber kimchi ($5) with shiitake mushrooms arrived in a latch-top mason jar. Rachel Yang, chef and co-owner (with husband Seif Chirchi) kindly explained, “[…] People are ordering this before their dinner. It’s more refreshing and goes well with a pre-dinner wine.” She was absolutely right as the tasty, fresh cucumber had a mild spice and light sourness that only kimchi can offer. It was a pleasing greeting to the meal as it captured my attention, adding to the anticipation of the next course to come. The smoked tofu ($8) was a simple yet phenomenal dish with Honshimeji mushroom confit, scallions and a soy truffle vinaigrette. With an earthy smokiness and rich mushroom flavor, it’s no wonder the smoked tofu has become a fixture on the menu. “Cooking seems like a very repetitive thing to do every day,” Yang stated. “But there is something very satisfying about transforming simple

ingredients to something really good.” Fennel velouté soup ($8) was a sight to be seen with a smoked mackerel brandade croquette and a sprig of dill to top. As it was placed before me, for just a split second, it seemed almost too perfect for me to mess up by eating. But my stomach quickly got the best of me (as it always does) and I did it anyway. The creamy soup was flawless and a dig into the slight crunch of the mackerel-laced brandade was elevating. The Joule BBQ ($24) consisted of short rib steak beautifully spread over a bed of collard greens chow chow. Nestled up next to it was a grilled, housemade, sweet chili sausage partnered with a helping of grilled Napa cabbage kimchi. Lastly, the whole mackerel ($20), sherryglazed and grilled with a sprinkle of coarse sea salt, was placed next to a row of cubed, cumin-pickled carrots with a ginger and scallion sauce.

The meltingly tender texture of the fish oozed of flavor and I ended my meal by discreetly trying to lick the plate of the bright, pickled carrots. Keep in mind that carrots don’t even come close to being in the top 50 of my favorite foods. That’s just how truly good it was. Innovative and evolved, Joule may be categorized as having Korean influences through French techniques. But there is so much more to be found as the menu is globally inspired. Joule breaks the mold with its cross-cultural dishes that are eclectic without being intimidating. “There are so many different ingredients with different flavors and texture,” Yang explained. “I love putting different ingredients together without any boundaries. We want to make sure that everyone has a “wow” moment when they are eating. We want to take them to different places and times when they are eating.”

MAYO

THE WAY IT SHOULD BE CELEBRATED Written by Alexis R. Smith Photography by Sam Cook

We all know Cinco de Mayo, like its well-known counterpart St Patrick’s day, translates into drinking. A lot of drinking. But well tequila shots aside, I intend to spend the first Thursday of May at Poquitos drinking infused tequilas whipped up into imaginative cocktails on the heated patio. Immediately after walking into Poquitos, I knew this was a bar I would be guaranteed to savor cocktails with authentic flare. Poquitos delivers that authenticity through everything from the décor to the ingredients. Much like its French counterpart Bastille in Ballard, the owners of Poquitos went straight to Mexico for everything from the wall tiles and wrought iron to drinks influenced or re-imagined with Mexican flavor. By setting its sights between bars with 30-plus specialized cocktails and the

18

ones selling 30 Rainers in 30 minutes, Poquitos fills a definite gap on Capitol Hill. While all of the drinks are made from the best tequilas, they’re meant for you to start a ruckus, not sedately sip. The most tempting, La Fiona, features habenero-infused tequila and knocks your socks off with its smoky start, tart middle and spicy finish. The most tongue tantalizing drink on the menu, however, is the Dirtweed. Emerging from an owner suggesting infusions of cilantro stems and coriander seeds as a joke, it turned into a huge hit. And last but very far from least is the El Dude, a dessertlike White Russian made from horchata that’s worth sticking around for dessert and forgoing that whole brevity thing. So that’s where you’ll find me, on Poquitos’ newly christened patio staking out my Cinco de Mayo drinking headquarters.

“Sex without love is merely healthy exercise.” - Robert A. Heinlein

EGGS Written by Kate Opatz

EGGS AROUND TOWN

One of the most versatile, common, affordable and delicious foods is one that also gets frequently overlooked and taken for granted. An egg dish of one sort or another can be found on just about every menu in Seattle. Whether it’s cracked on top of a dish, scrambled as the main event or giving a salad a bit of bulk, an egg is the perfect way to elevate a dish, to add texture and some fun.

HEALTH OF EGGS

ROVER’S

Where do restaurants, without chickens in the backyard, like the Corson Building, find these topquality eggs they serve so routinely? As it turns out, local, free-range eggs are reasonably easy to come by.

MAD HATCHER FARM,

run by Bernie Nash in Ephrata, Wash., raises squab, chickens and quail, and sells both meat and eggs to Seattle restaurants. The birds have an all-natural diet and many are raised from the egg on the farm.

CROWN “S” RANCH

in Washington’s Methow Valley raises organic eggs from free-range hens. In an organic pasture, hens feed where cattle have recently grazed and grubs are readily available.

SEA BREEZE FARM

on Vashon Island offers “beyond organic” eggs year-round at the University District, Ballard and West Seattle farmers markets.

PIKE PLACE CREAMERY

Perhaps the most Seattle of all egg dishes is Rover’s signature eggs-on-egg. Delicately scrambled egg comes in an eggshell, topped with caviar and lime creme fraîche.

SPUR

CAFE PRESSE

CALIS

Café Presse’s Oeufs Plats, two broiled eggs with ham, gruyere and bubbling butter are the ultimate meal any time of day.

The Canlis Salad, romaine, bacon, herbs, lemon, olive oil, becomes a notable classic with the addition of a coddled egg.

TASTY N SONS Tasty n Sons in Portland realizes that just about everything – from the sautéed spinach to the pork cutlets to the polenta – is better topped with an egg.

Spur perfects tagliatelle with oyster mushrooms and pine nuts by topping it with a duck egg.

LOCAL 360 At Local 360, a sunny side up egg is the icing on the fried chicken – a roulade filled with bacon mousse on cheesy grits and collard greens.

It’s been a rocky road for eggs and their reputation. The association of heart disease with high cholesterol once made eggs and their high cholesterol levels suspect. Egg whites and egg substitutes took over for actual eggs until it became evident that cholesterol is actually far less a factor in heart disease than saturated fat. In fact, eggs are an extremely healthy food for many reasons. Despite having seven grams of protein, an egg has only 75 calories. It is packed with diseasefighting nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin, which may protect against vision loss, as well as iron and multiple vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids. All eggs are not equal, though. It’s been shown that eggs from hens allowed to peck on pastures are significantly more nutritious than eggs born in cages. Free-range birds consume a more natural diet of seeds, worms, insects and plants that hens in cages don’t have access to. Free-range eggs also have less fat and cholesterol than the average egg, making the higher price that comes with them a bit more digestible. Possibly more important than all the statistics, though, is the fact that eggs are readily available and endlessly versatile. The same egg can be mixed into soup, made into flan or shaken in a cocktail. Information gathered from http://www.health. harvard.edu/press_releases/egg-nutrition, http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/goodeggs-for-nutrition-theyre-hard-to-beat) and http://www.motherearthnews.com/eggs. aspx.

carries local, organic chicken eggs daily and more unusual eggs – goose and duck, for example – when possible.

THE IMUSIC PROJECT

THINGS CHANGE. AND IN THIS CASE, DON’T STAY THE SAME. FOR MANY THINGS IN LIFE, CHANGE CAN HAVE A NEGATIVE CONNOTATION. BUT FOR IMUSIC, IT’S MUSIC TO OUR EARS. Written by Jamie Starr Photography by Sam Cook

The giant building that flanks EMP and Seattle Center has seen its fair share of uses. Most commonly as a nightclub during the past seven years. Many people in Seattle can say they have stepped foot in one or all of the past inhabitants including Polly Esthers, Element, Level 5 and most recently Diamond Lounge. The draw? It’s huge. And I’m not saying it can hold 600-plus people like many of Seattle’s upper echelon of nightclubs. No, we are talking 1,200 people or more. This puts it in the same leagues as many of Las Vegas’ super clubs and local event centers like Showbox. It is also one of the only multi-level clubs in Seattle. The vantage points from the upper mezzanines are priceless. Element reigned supreme from the list of past participants. The remodel took the funky ‘70s-inspired theme bar of Polly Esthers and brought patrons the ultra sleek, Vegas-like Element. The talent was also altered, seeing the likes of big house and electronic DJs such as Darude, BT, Christopher Lawrence and more. But there were still many issues with the general feel of the venue and nobody seemed to want to do anything about it. Until now. Enter iMusic. Upon first glance, it is a little hard to remember the past decor. It now looks and feels like a whole new venue. The multi-colored rooms of the past have given way to a sleek all white finish with black accents. LED lighting was installed throughout, including the stairs, (yes, they glow). With the flip of a switch, the white walls can absorb any color of the rainbow for that night.

Continuing on your journey through this new environment, you will notice the addition of the VIP sections, totaling 17. The majority are taking up the space along the windows on the second floor of the building, while a select few are directly stage right of the dance floor. And speaking of the dance floor, the ‘70s light-up floor has given way for a more sophisticated wood version. For those sentimentalists out there, the light-up effect has been carried over to the 16-foot extended square stage. It’s like paying homage to the new Yankee Stadium by taking an old stadium chair and putting it into the new ballpark. The biggest improvement may be minimal to the average club goer. But those attending the long list of shows at iMusic will appreciate the removal of the dividing wall between the two rooms downstairs. Now you can have a view of the stage from most anywhere in the club. Becoming a true events center and not just a nightclub is a big focus for iMusic. In the short five months of operation, artists that have been booked at iMusic have included Far East Movement, Keri Hilson, Shwayze, Ivy Queen, Amerie, DJ Skribble and DJ Scene to name a few. So whether you’re looking for a good spot to go dancing on a Saturday night or a place to check out your favorite artist, iMusic will fit the bill. Maybe it’s time you gave this venue another chance. I promise you won’t feel like John Travolta ever again.

Interview by Kinsey Litton Photos by Meeno 28

“Health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die”

It was roughly two years ago when we got an e-mail from an Interscope Records exec pitching us on the idea of bringing out a new act to perform at a DList Magazine party. With the constant parade of e-mails supporting this act as being “the next big thing,” we skeptically looked at the proposed group. The two afroclad hipsters dressed in neons and animal prints caught our eyes almost as quickly as their song “I’m in Miami Bitch” resonated in our eardrums. Fast forward two years, two DList performances, a Grammy nomination and more than 100 million YouTube video views and the duo is ready to release their second album and take Seattle by storm, yet again. We definitely aren’t sorry for party rocking!

First off, guys, thanks so much for doing this interview. How’s everything been going this year? Yeah baby, it’s been a nonstop party this year….we’ve got residencies in Las Vegas, shows internationally and when we’re not on stage, we’ve been in the studio getting our new album finished. It’s called “Sorry For Party Rocking” and we’re putting it out this summer. Your last record, “Party Rock,” came out in 2009 and did so well that it was nominated for a Grammy. What was that like? You know, that’s what we made the album for. We told the record label before we even started that we were making “Party Rock” to go to the top, that we wanted that Grammy. When we go, we go 100 percent, so for us, getting the nomination was just saying, “Yeah, we’re doin it!” Party rocking is worldwide and it’s awesome that the Grammys recognized that. Your new record is slated to come out this year. What’s the feel of it? The new album is like a sequel to “Party Rock.” It’s still Redfoo and Sky Blu, but we’ve had an extra two years to be making beats and writing verses, so we’ve made this album a little more sophisticated. It’s an album that really is gonna make you jump in the club. You guys are known for collaborations with people from Kanye West to Lil Jon. Are there any new collaborations on this record? We wanted to get some sexy girls in the studio! Haha. Before this, we’ve only collaborated with Fergie on Guetta’s “Gettin’ Over You” and we did a dope remix of Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold,” but we wanted to add some sexy to “Party Rock Anthem” and Lauren Bennett came in and gave it to us on “Party Rock Anthem” [the first single on the album]. Goonrock got on that track too. He’s also the producer on the album who’s been making these tracks fire. There’s a couple other callabos on the album, but we wanna hit you with the surprise when the album drops in June. Who has been one of your favorite artists to work and

collaborate with? Lil Jon is a party animal and we just worked on a track with Pitbull that is CRAZY! Basically we like working with people we like partying with, so all our collabs get that party rock energy! You guys will be coming up to Seattle again on May 14 for the Beyond Wonderland show. What do you guys like to do in the Seattle area? We like to party rock! Someone Tweet us out and let us know where the hot spots are gonna be for us while we’re up there! @ Redfoo and @skybluUPnU. Let’s get “Sorry For Party Rocking,” Seattle! You started off DJing private parties for some of LA’s biggest celebrities. How did this help spawn LMFAO? We learned a lot from DJing; how beats go together, what tracks really make people go crazy, how to take shots without spilling on the equipment…. You know. So when we make our tracks, we know exactly how to mix ‘em to make sure the fans will lose their minds. You have had residencies at some of Las Vegas’ biggest clubs, Tao and Marquee. If you could pick one club in the entire world you could name as your favorite, which would it be? Le Freak. On the subject of your vibe, your style is really fun and distinct and you’re even involved in a Party Rock clothing line. How did that come about? We started Party Rock Clothing because we wanted to bring the swag of our music into what we’re wearing, baby! I mean, look at these pants. They’ve got purple zebra print, extra zippers, studs and they’re Huck Finns. If these don’t sound like “I’m In Miami, B*tch,” then what does?! And we’ve got shirts with our songs on them, frames that we wear and party rock shoes. They’re dope. PartyRockClothing.com. Get on it. Do you think fashion plays a big part in your image and music?

I think it’s more that our music plays a big part in our fashion. Our music is the base of everything we do. We make a song about shufflin’, cuz we like to shuffle, but we want some shoes for shufflin’ that still look dope. So what’d we do? Got ourselves some shoes, put our crystals on them and everybody wants them! So now they’re up for sale on PartyRockClothing.com. Yeah baby. You guys have a Facebook page, YouTube channel, a Myspace and a news Web site all to keep in constant contact with your fans. Do you think social media plays a big part in your relationship with them and your success? For sure! That’s how we find girls. Babies, go like us on Facebook for a good time! Hahaha. Yeah… we Tweet out where we are so our fans can come find us (@LMFAONews), and we post up vids and pictures all the time because behind the scenes in the Party Rock Crew is funny as hell….check out Day 57 Drunkest Men Alive http://bit.ly/Drunkest Redfoo’s yelling in “Shots” (feat Lil Jon) came straight outta that video! Funny sh*t, man. Fans will be excited to find out you guys have just been added to the summer leg of Ke$ha’s Get Sleazy tour. What else is on your agenda for this summer? We’ll be in Vegas for monthly residencies, Redfoo and the Party Rock Crew at Marquee the last Monday of every month and Sky Blu DJing at Surrender at Encore, and then both of us will be having huge LMFAO parties at Tao Beach and Tao Nightclub. And we’ve got HUGE things planned for those events. Don’t miss that. We’ll be getting “Sorry For Party Rocking” with party animals coast to coast! Changing the world, one party at a time.

DON OF A NEW ERA

WE SAT DOWN WITH DONNIS ABOUT HIS NEW MIXTAPE.

Written by Mikey McClarron Last year he was in XXL’s Freshmen Top 10. This year we will see the release of his debut album. And with his new mixtape “Southern Lights” releasing to rave reviews, Donnis is not only making the grade, but sprinting ahead of his class. “Southern Lights” opens up with Donnis getting any of us who may not be educated on his current status properly up to date. He pours out about the relentless pressure to drop an actual album, along with the effects of being in the industry. Soft horns and keys, accompanied by 808 drum patterns on the Needlz-produced track play out like something you would hear on an Outkast album. Appropriately, the Dungeon Family’s own Big Rube makes a guest appearance to close out the intro track, much like he does on the Outkast classic “Liberation.” It has been eight months between Don’s last mixtape, “Fashionably Late,” and this new one. The downtime has opened space for many questions about Donnis’ progression as an artist, but don’t get it twisted, he is here to stay. After the intro, “Southern Lights” quickly moves into a more uptempo vibe where he showcases his bravado. Tracks like “Y.W.I.,” “Ring My Bell” with Dev, and one of my personal favorites, “Ray Ban Vision,” stand out immediately and Donnis quickly captures the attention of everyone listening. The mixtape flows very well, from songs about the lifestyle and living it to the fullest, to more serious joints like the closing song and title track, “Southern Lights.” Overall, “Southern Lights” is a fantastic mixtape. It plays like an album much more than a mixtape. Donnis’ versatility shines throughout as he covers a wide range of topics in just 14 tracks. Along with Big Rube, Donnis gets some great assists from some friends like Dev, Young Dro and Cyhi Da Prince on the “Southern Lights” tape. A great listen from beginning to end, the replay value of this is something that isn’t necessarily so common these days in the mixtape circuit and this can be a very exciting assessment of what Donnis may bring to the table when it’s time for his official debut album to release.

“Age does not depend upon years, but upon temperament and health. Some men are born old, and some never grow so.”

“Right now, the Mariners are looking for the tie. They would take a fly ball, they would love a base hit into the gap and they could win it with Junior’s speed. The stretch and the 0-1 pitch on the way to Edgar Martinez. Swung on and

LINED DOWN THE LEFT-FIELD LINE FOR A BASE HIT! HERE COMES JOEY, HERE IS JUNIOR TO THIRD BASE. THEY’RE GOING TO WAVE HIM IN! THE THROW TO THE PLATE WILL BE…LATE! THE MARINERS ARE GOING TO PLAY FOR THE AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP! I DON’T BELIEVE IT! IT JUST

CONTINUES! MY OH MY!”

Hearing the unmistakable voice of Dave Niehaus exclaim “My oh my!” whenever the Seattle Mariners played during the last 34 years has been much more of a shining hallmark of spring in the Pacific Northwest than the Seattle weather ever was. This 2011 season is the first the Mariners are playing without Niehaus on the announcer’s mic. Filling in will be his good friend and esteemed colleague, Rick Rizzs, along with a team of broadcasters. Even though Rizzs has had more than 25 years of experience in the press box, by no means does he intend to replace Niehaus. Rather, he is dedicating this season to Niehaus and will be striving to carry on his legacy.

Written by Sheena Nguyen Even the preparation leading up to this season has been a stark contrast to previous ones. “It’s a lot different than past seasons because we’re going to miss Dave who was with us for 34 years broadcasting Mariners baseball,” Rizzs said. Because of his tremendous presence, there will be a whole team of broadcasters working to cover the games. This includes Rizzs, who will be the lead voice on the radio, as well as a few other familiar personalities such as Ron Fairly, Ken Levine, Ken Wilson, Dave Henderson and Dave Valle. Former players Dan Wilson and Jay Buhner are also expected to make an appearance from time to time. “These are guys who have worked with Dave along different time periods in the history of the Mariners franchise,” Rizzs added. “Bringing back a lot of the guys who have worked with Dave is the best way to keep his legacy alive, to keep his memory buoyant and to tell some good stories about Dave.” Having been with the M’s since the very start, there are countless stories pertaining to Niehaus. One, however, stood out in Rizzs’ mind. “Dave’s homerun call was ‘Fly, fly away!’” Rizzs recalled. “I don’t know where he came up with it, but this time when Edgar Martinez hit a homerun with the bases loaded in 1996, I’m waiting for the ‘Fly, fly away!’ but instead his grandma showed up and made a sandwich. That’s where he came up with “Get out the rye bread, Grandma, it’s grand salami time!” It caught on like wildfire and all of a sudden the next day we’re getting salami from all over.” That was Niehaus. “Everything he touched was golden,” Rizzs commented. His personality was magnetic to everyone around him, from fans listening in on their personal radios on the ferry ride home from work to those working right by his side. “We would just spend time up

in the booth laughing and telling jokes and just being ourselves,” Rizzs added. “It was just a great time being around one of the greatest announcers of all time.” According to Rizzs, he was essentially living out his dream broadcasting alongside Niehaus. “I’ve wanted to do this since I was 12 years old growing up in the south side of Chicago,” he said. “I get to go out to the ballpark and get ready to broadcast a game and be the eyes and the ears and the senses for the fans listening on the radio and it’s the greatest job in the world.” Having grown up in Chicago, Rizzs’ loyalties could be torn as he was surrounded by the presence of two Major League Baseball teams. But rest assured, the new lead voice of the Mariners is in full support of the team and just simply loves the game of baseball. “Well you have to love the game of baseball because you’re doing this every day for seven months out of the year,” Rizzs explained. He also knows what it takes to do the job well. Taking on the task of announcing every play of 162 games in a season is not as easy as it looks. “You just have to have that special quality of painting the picture so well that fans can see the game on the radio,” Rizzs described. “To be able to put the fan in the front row seat. To be able to picture the game, to feel the drama. To turn the words into something that makes the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up during the exciting times of a ball game. That’s the true mark of a radio broadcaster.” Rizzs acknowledged that no one painted the picture better than Niehaus. But the Mariners have only just begun their season and someone has to be the connection between the mound and the fans. Rizzs is undoubtedly the man for the job with his tangible connection to the current Mariners and their fans as well as his reverence for the most memorable voice of the franchise. “Dave was a treasure, a complete treasure to the fans here in the Pacific Northwest for 34 years,” Rizzs said. “So our goal this year is to always do the best job that we possibly can… [and] we want to make sure that the new fans as well as the old fans that come in know that Dave Niehaus was Rick Rizzs one of the greatest announcers of all time.”

Written by Kathleen Wallace The disciplines of kinesiology and exercise science (otherwise known as “what your high school gym teacher majored in”) are, in their modern incarnation, extremely young.

While people saw the connection between being active and looking good in a toga as far back as ancient Greece, it wasn’t until around the beginning of the 20th century that people began to approach fitness in terms much more scientific than “distance you can throw this large rock” or “has the ability to punch a guy until he doesn’t get up.” And even then, working out in the first half of the 1900s was done on more of an intuitive, functional basis. General healthy, calisthenic activities like jumping jacks and basketball were just becoming part of the curriculum at universities and the first musclemen à la Charles Atlas were beginning to extoll the value of squat-thrusts and heavy lifting as the primary line of defense against sand-kicking bullies. But it wasn’t until the ‘60s that a couple of Air Force medical professionals began puzzling over why a lot of ostensibly fit, muscle-bound airmen couldn’t run a fast mile without puking. With the 1968 publication of their game-changing book, “Aerobics,” the layman first began to understand the differences between cardio and strength training (that one is specifically focused on the efficient use of oxygen

34

and the other on muscle development), and the general public soon became engrossed in changing their lives via the emergent science of exercise. By present day, of course, practically everyone learns the basics of these concepts in school and you can’t turn on a TV without seeing ads for pills guaranteed to “accelarate metabolic processing” or Tony Little screaming in your face about optimal glute-blasting. I bring this up because we currently find ourselves in the midst of a similar health revolution: the adolescent science of brain chemistry and its pervasive effects on our health and well-being. As researchers continually refine with ever-increasing precision, their understandings of the chemical processes that underlie virtually everything the mind experiences—be it pleasure, pain, craving, etc.—we begin to see new ways to keep ourselves sane, healthy and happy. While we humans have always been way into aggressively messing with our brain chemistry for fun and profit (more on this later), we’re only beginning to understand exactly why these things work and how to do it more precisely. Unless you’ve been living in some kind of news

“Eat well, drink in moderation and sleep sound, in these three good health abound.”

vacuum or under the proverbial rock, you’ve probably heard names like dopamine and serotonin being thrown around in recent years, probably in some kind of soft-focused, pastel-colored drug commercial. “Do you sometimes feel down?” these ads ask over footage of someone staring glumly out a window or “Just not feel like yourself?” Such hilariously nonspecific questions are usually followed by a quick, similarly vague explanation of how drug X will affect one of these magic brain substances (generally called “neurotransmitters”), after which they roll footage of the previously depressed person happily engaging in normal interpersonal interactions. Things wrap up with a scarily nonchalant list of “potential side effects” that typically include things like explosive diahrrea and/or death and then you’re left to wonder exactly how down you’d have to be feeling to risk crapping yourself to a lethal degree to feel better. Rather than an obvious chemical solution to life’s problems, what these commercials really offer is an insight into just how complex the chemical ballet that creates our sensual experience really is. While the public at large is beginning to be

CAFFEINE

ALCOHOL

CANNABIS

Yes, it’s a drug. And probably the most pervasive, outside of sugar. Wenk estimates that about 80 percent of North Americans have a measurable amount of caffeine in their system for basically all of their lives. Soda and chocolate are rich in caffeine, so children start using this drug pretty much from infancy. And, for the record, this very article you are reading was brought to you by no less than 10 shots of espresso and two Red Bulls, so I feel pretty safe saying that caffeine is a pervasive part of modern American life. Caffeine works mainly by blocking your brain’s reception of a chemical called adenosine, a neurotransmitter that gradually builds up in the brain over the day causing drowsiness and eventually sleep. By sort of chemically cock-blocking adenosine, so to speak, caffeine allows us to artificially create extended wakefulness. Overall, this is not a terribly invasive or destructive way to induce a feeling of alertness, which is why caffeine has been embraced as a socially acceptable means of getting a stimulant high. While there is a sort of withdrawal and addiction that can occur, it is fairly limited in scope and can usually be weathered with just a minimal amount of crabiness and whining.

An omnipresent element in human history, alcohol is a unique sort of crotch-kick to the brain. Alcohol has not one but two powerful ways of retarding your brain function. First, alcohol Hulks-up a neurotransmitter called GABA, which is usually responsible for putting the brakes on other brain chemicals. Second, alcohol gets in the way of a chemical called glutamate, which is your brain’s go-to for activating brain cells. So, in a sense, alcohol both strenghtens the brain chemicals already trying to slow you down and hamstrings the ones trying to get things done. In particular, alcohol likes to bind to the structures for receiving glutamate in the parts of the brain responsible for memory, decision-making and impulse control. Reading that sentence should pretty much explain everything you’ve ever seen happen at a Belltown hotdog stand at 2 a.m. Ever.

If you’ve spent any time around a really annoying, self-righteous, rambling pot smoker, you may have heard the human brain actually has perfect little receptors built right in to help us absorb THC, the active chemical compound in marijuana. This is sort of true. In reality, the human brain manufactures a chemical called anandamide, which is responsible for turning off other chemicals that limit the release of dopamine, the fairly well-known “pleasure” chemical of the human brain. Incidentally, THC just happens to be a perfect fit for the sites where anandamide like to dock in your brain, thereby having the same effect. And unlike your body’s homemade version, THC doesn’t break down quickly. This lets dopamine keep leaking out and building up, giving us a pleasant, euphoric sensation and the ability to enjoy things like the comic stylings of Broken Lizard and Sublime albums on a whole other level. Also, you may not be surprised to learn that the other key roles of anandamide involve relaxation and the house-cleaning of extraneous short term memory data. This probably explains why every single stoned conversation ever held has contained at least one pause that was followed by, “Wait…what was I just talking about?”

aware that neurotransmitters (chemicals that help nerve cells communicate) play a vital role in our thoughts and feelings, it’s just not as simple as “add extra dopamine for good-time fun!” The chemical in question, the areas of the brain with which it interacts, the genetic makeup of the individual and a person’s life history all play a key role in the process, leading to a huge variety of effects from a relatively limited number of chemicals. There are literally entire libraries of books explaining how every single human behavior and biological function interacts with the precariously balanced chemical equilibrium of your brain. Everything from sleep hygiene (meaning how regular and healthy your sleep patterns are, not whether you smell at night) to diet to level of sexual activity is deeply intertwined with the production and absorption of the neurotransmitters that make you feel good. And I encourage you to read at least some of those books, as they are fascinating. But in the interest of giving you a basic, easily memorable and entertaining acquaintance with a few of the major players in your brain’s chemical

drama, let’s take a look at “your brain on drugs.” Much like you learned about the properties of a solution in high school chemistry class by dumping in a foreign substance and watching the ensuing changes, so can we understand more about our brains by examining exactly what part of Charlie Sheen is interacting with all that cocaine to make him think he’s a warlock. When we use the term “drug,” however, it’s important to realize that we are not strictly talking about the kind that keeps celebrities on tabloid covers and hippies in jail. In more clinical terms, a drug is anything one ingests that affects the chemistry of the brain rather than that of the body, such as the nutrients in food. Sugar is considered a drug in that your brain cells need glucose to operate. If you’ve ever woken up in the morning so hungry you could barely think, congratulations, you know what addiction feels like. Constantly seeking to maintain equilibrium, the brain responds to a drop in the level of any chemical (whether it exists in naturally occurring amounts or artificially augmented ones) with a sense of “craving” for the substance it just noticed is missing. And as Gary Wenk, professor

of psychology and neuroscience at Ohio State University and author of “Your Brain on Food” points out, there is no objective moral scale on which to judge what we ingest. “Drugs and nutrients in your diet are simply chemicals—no more, no less. They have actions within your brain that you either desire or would like to avoid.” In reality, fine distinctions in the types of brain structures a substance affects and exactly how it works on them can mean the difference between poison and medicine, legal or illegal status for users. Many drugs we are familiar with in modern popular culture work on the same few, important neurotransmitters in slightly different ways, with hugely disparate effects. To illustrate how such minute chemical differences can lead to polar outcomes, let’s just compare how a few of the most popular, most distinctive types of drugs work their magic on our subjective experience.

METHAMPHETAMINES Variants of naturally occurring amphetamines like ephedrine, the African khat plant, and kava kava have been present in cultures across the globe for hundreds of years, generally because people like feeling good and getting stuff done. Originally marketed as a decongestant, however, the synthetic relatives of these drugs found widespread use and notoriety for their more pronounced stimulant properties as early as World War II, when they kept the war humming along by helping armies on both sides stay awake way past the point of normal human endurance (or even the point that the constant threat of death by gas or machine gun could get them to). Things got even more intense when someone eventually figured out that by adding a few molecules to amphetamines (something called a “methyl group,” hence the name), you could make it more fat soluble. Since your brain is largely made of fat, this was like creating a super-charged delivery system for the amphetamines. Surprisingly, like marijuana, methamphetamine also primarily affects the body’s use of dopamine. Unlike weed, however, meth invades the little cellular mechanisms that suck up dopamine after the brain has had its fun and wants to restore equilibrium. The resulting glut of dopamine makes these structures freak out and start vomiting all that joy-chemical back out into your synapse. There it bonds to the appropriate receptors over and over and over, resulting in what the medical profession tactfully refers to as “overstimulation” and what meth users recognize as their trademark brand of triumphant mania. In particular, the dopamine flood resulting from meth tends to be focused in what’s called the “reward pathway.” This series of neurons--connected to areas of learning, memory and anticipation--evolved to provide us with a rush of dopamine-fueled joy every time our ancestors accomplished something that helped us survive, such as eating, drinking or mating. By positively reaffirming things like cheeseburgers and sex with a flood of neural feel-good juice, our brains helped reinforce behaviors that maintained the species. So when methamphetamine gets in there and just starts firing off all those “good job!” receptors like a hyperactive 10-year-old left alone with a box fireworks, those strong attachments to your learned behavior circuitry lead to— you guessed it—addiction! You associate the “reward” feeling with just about anything involving meth instead of necessary biological functions or normal behaviors and pretty soon you find yourself not eating for days and just staying up all night to clean your shower with a toothbrush because, you know, that’s not insane at all.

And who knows? All the interactions described above are the very simplest of simplifications of the complex chemical symphony that creates our consciousness and, by extension, everything we know about the outside world. Our exponentially increasing knowledge of our inner workings has allowed us even greater control over our lifespan, health

36

COCAINE Yet another dopamine manipulator, cocaine, interacts with the brain in a sublty different way. Instead of flooding your reward path with dopamine, cocaine just blocks the structures that try to gobble up the dopamine, allowing it to build up and bind repeatedly in the reward pathway, creating that enduring sense of “winning” Mr. Sheen feels about everything he does, even the several hundred lame boner jokes that have comprised his entire run on “Two and a Half Men.” Cocaine is also very active in the parts of the brain that control voluntary movement, which explains why it is easier to bring peace to the Middle East than it is to get a cokehead to shut up and sit still for 10 straight minutes.

LSD

Related and very similar in structure to methamphetamine, Ecstasy works by the exact same mechanism as meth, but works hardest on a different neurotransmitter: serotonin. Serotonin is also related to feeling good, but is more focused on parts of the brain used to control mood, sleep and perception, hence the more warm and loving feeling that result as opposed to the I-feel-so-good-I-could-punch-through-a-window sensation offered by more dopamine-centered stimulants like cocaine. While there is some interaction with the reward pathway, allowing for some degree of addiction to develop, the greatest threat of longterm use is that MDMA is so good at flooding the brain with serotonin (which usually exists in very small quantities there) that eventually you stop producing serotonin receptors as your brain seeks to restore equilibrium. Then, once the drug use stops, the brain can’t get enough and you feel like crap emotionally. Doctors note that other dangerous side effects of quitting E may include the realization that hard trance music is actually really awful and that your furry pants look incredibly stupid to most of the world.

Acid is still somewhat of a puzzle in that no one is 100 percent sure how it causes hallucinations. What it definitely seems to do is perfectly mimic serotonin and bind to your brain’s receptors for it. Things get weird, though, because LSD seems to like to bind with a huge array of serotonin sites that are invovled in all kinds of sensory perception, notably an area called the raphe nuclei-a part of the brainstem involved in dreaming. Researchers aren’t sure how this literally produces hallucinations. Despite initial similarities between dreaming sleep and LSD use, the two are very different. One guess is a theory that serotonin plays a role in helping edit the onslaught of sensory input involved in daily life and that the subtle alterations of our sensory processes may underlie the user’s sudden, acid-induced perception that “Dark Side of the Moon” is the greatest accomplishment of the human race, like, ever, man. Interestingly, modern historians also enjoy pointing out the omnipresence of similar, naturallyoccurring compounds and their accompanying hallucinogenic effects in the development of many of the world’s early religions. Everything from the Salem witch trials to the events of the Book of Ezekial to beliefs of “divinely inspired” Viking berserkers to modern Central and South American shamanism have been theoretically or directly linked to the ingestion of locally present neurotoxic mushrooms and molds that work on serotonin receptors. This has lead to a hugely divergent set of interpretations, ranging from the idea that religion is nothing more than byproduct of our hallucinations, to the idea that we may be able to find a direct line to God from within our own brains via the chemical equivalent of “up-up-down-down-left-rightleft-right-A-B-start-select.”

and subjective experience. With neuroscience and genetics advancing at a breakneck pace, perhaps it is time to rethink our understanding of “drugs.” In this discussion I’ve largely elected to stick with substances more typically or popularly defined as such above, mostly because people find their effects familiar and humorous. (This isn’t a science magazine, after all). But the

direction of modern medical research suggests that realizing that everything—even what we eat and breathe—affects us in equally complex if less hilarious and externally dramatic ways may be the beginning of the health revolution that will define this century, allowing us a degree of control over the length and quality of lives the likes of which few dare to imagine even now.

SPOT OFF

As we age, we can begin to accumulate age spots, acne scars, broken capillaries and sometimes even hyperpigmentation. There are many creams and potions that promise to restore our complexion’s former luster. Unfortunately, many contain hydroquinone, a skinbleaching ingredient that can damage your liver in high doses. Laser treatments are the safest and fastest way to zap those spots. American Laser Skincare in Bellevue offers an exclusive FotoFacial using the IPL laser, which has some additional skin tightening benefits. This treatment offers visible results within one to three visits. You do have to see the doctor on staff first to make sure you are a good candidate for this treatment. ERIN TINSLEY Local plus-size model Erin Tinsley of Heffner Management discusses her experience with the fashion industry’s weight issues.

Tell us about your career as a model. Basically it came down to being at the right place at the right time. Four years ago I was discovered in a restaurant by the president of my Seattle agency, Heffner Management. I had never even considered modeling up to that point, so it completely caught me off guard. Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to work with many clients, both around the U.S. and internationally including Nordstrom, REI and Amazon.

Have you always worked as a plus-size model? Yes. While my weight has fluctuated a bit over the past couple years, I’ve always worked as a plus-size model.

Have you encountered overt negative reactions to your body by designers or other figures working in the fashion industry? Fortunately, no I haven’t. It excites me to see more and more plus-sized models in the mainstream media. While the transition has been slow, designers and industry professionals are warming up to the idea that the public wants to see more realistic figures in the fashion world.

How do you feel about the current state of the international modeling world? I feel extremely fortunate to be able to work in this industry. It’s incredibly competitive, always changing and unpredictable.

VIDA SPA

NIRVANA IS ONE STEP CLOSER Written by Kyla I. Stelling Taking a holistic approach to spa treatment, Vida Spa offers both sensual and healing therapies that are designed to reinstate balance of the body, mind and spirit. The spa facilities, located in the gorgeous Westlake neighborhood of downtown Seattle, emit a vibe of East meets West. The interior is composed of modern design, yet is reminiscent of a garden within an ancient Buddhist temple. The décor is mainly composed of earth tones, which generate an organic feel and creates an environment that shelters you from the harsh and hectic city. The soft lighting, trickling of fountains and ornamentation of tropical plants produce a perfect sanctuary of bliss. Upon entering the spa, I was greeted immediately with a friendly smile. As well as health history, I was asked to provide additional information that would determine my Ayurvedic constitution. Vida borrows from Eastern Indian Ayurvedic practices, which have been used for 5,000 years to promote energy and well-being. The central concept of Ayurveda is the idea that one can achieve the greatest health when there is a balance between the three doshas of Vata, Pitta

60

and Kapha. The survey is designed to help discover your dominant dosha so that the treatment is personalized to your needs. The spacious changing area was equipped with an infra-red sauna, which I was encouraged to use both before and after my treatment. I was also invited to the cozy fireside lounge, where detoxifying tea and other refreshments were offered. I was then led to my treatment room where I experienced the Swedana Ayurvedic treatment. Using the oils that matched my prescribed dosha, I was given a 60-minute Ayurvedic massage. With this massage technique, oil is poured all over the body and extra attention is given to the head, neck and scalp. The next 10 minutes of treatment were spent in a detoxifying West Coast cedar steam cabinet. After the cleansing steam cabinet, my massage therapist exfoliated my skin by dry-flour brushing off my entire body. It was a perfect combination of treatments, designed to expel and prevent re-entry of bodily toxins. The experience left my skin feeling soft, my muscles renewed and my entire body purified.

IT’SWrittenA byBUDDHA-FUL LIFE Kayleigh Capelle Photos by Taylor Grant Shopping for a new piece to add to your wardrobe can become routine and monotonous. You walk into a boutique, look at the clothes, maybe talk with an employee and then make your purchase. It is time to step out of the comfort of your shopping box and experience a new way to find those hot new items. I can say that I have officially stepped outside of my shopping box and it was incredibly refreshing. Buddhaful is a local Seattle retailer and event sponsor that truly understands the connection fashion has to music, art and many other aspects of happy living. Like its clever name, Buddhaful’s owner, Mike Maffei, is a distinctly creative individual. Growing up in California with a strong musical and artistic background, Maffei explained that the beginning stages of Buddhaful were mainly him and a friend “on skateboards with ‘40s, selling T-shirts.” Eventually the carefree business manner turned a bit more serious and Maffei had his own store on Broadway in Capitol Hill. The intricate, spiritually referenced designs on the T-shirts came to make their wear into very fashionable pieces that can be worn in yoga, dancing and everything in between. At this point, Buddhaful might sound like any other active wear retailer. So let me explain where the

lines of the “shopping box” are crossed. Maffei, also known as Buddhaful Mike, has decided to run Buddhaful by appointment, from home. He has renovated a basement into not only a retail space, but also a music jamming space. Let me be the first to say that it is an awesome atmosphere. Buddhaful sponsors events like fashion shows, concerts and insider-only parties. And of course, the clothing is perfect for dancing at those exciting musical happenings. By scheduling your shopping time with Maffei, you have the benefit of trying on whichever clothes you want for however long you want. You also have the wealth of Maffei’s product knowledge, which truly blew me away. Each piece of clothing has so many great aspects; perfect fits, cozy fabric and best of all, one-of-a-kind prints. Buddhaful works with artists from Hawaii, France, Bali, Seattle and many other parts of the world to create fashions that hold deep connections to spirituality and peaceful thoughts. The clothing (for both men and women) ranges from yoga pants and everyday basics to detailed outwear and flattering dresses. If you’re the type of shopper that looks for the most exceptional pieces to wear every day, I definitely recommend you book an appointment with Maffei.
