Robert Wagner, above, of St. Louis Park, watches his approach shot to the par four 4th green Wednesday afternoon. Wagner is a former Detroit Lakes native. Jon Trasamar, right, of Blue Earth, rolls an eagle attempt on the par five 5th hole at the Detroit Country Club in Detroit Lakes, Wednesday afternoon. Trasamar, who plays for the U of M, shot a two day total of 9 under par 133.

Gopher power Trasamar clinches medalist laurels BY BRIAN WIERIMA

Since about 2006, the University of Minnesota golfers have cast a Maroon-andGold shadow over the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament, by sending multiple competitors each year to the prestigious amateur tournament held at the Detroit Country Club. The Gophers have made their presence felt through the years, with a bevy of U of M golfers gathering awards or playing deep into match play. Since 2006, three Golden Gophers have claimed Pine to Palm silver by winning medalist laurels. Well, make that four after Wednesday’s second day of qualifying ended. Gopher senior Jon Trasamar joins fellow U of M golfers Erik Van Rooyen (2011), Cameron White (2007) and Clayton Rask (2006) to win medalist honors. Trasamar’s two sub-70 rounds of five-under par 66

and four-under 67 for a final 133, was two strokes better than North Dakota State sophomore Bill Carlson’s and Detroit Lakes’ native and current St. Louis Park resident Robert Wagner’s seven-under 135. “It’s cool to be medalist and join some former teammates who also won medalist honors here,” said Trasamar, who is a redshirt senior at the U of M. “It’s been a cool experience playing here over the years. Coach (John) Carlson loved playing here and now six to eight of us always plan on coming every year.” Trasamar’s game was on both days, giving himself chances for 10 to 15-foot birdies on many of his holes. “(Tuesday) I was hitting the ball well and putting it on the greens for good birdie chances,” Trasamar said. “Today, I wasn’t playing as well, but I took advantage of the par 5 holes and made birdie on all of them. Wednesday was much more of a grind, though.”

Seven of the eight Gophers qualified for match play, including Alex Gaugert, who shot a four-under 138 to tie for seventh, while Jon Dutoit was three-under for a 139 to tie for 10th. “The competition is certainly deeper this year, with a ton of good high school players and young Mid-Ams playing well,” Trasamar said. “You’re going to need to show up to advance.” The 33-year-old Wagner, who is a DLHS graduate and has played the DCC course “thousands” of times, was excited entering the second day of qualifying after he scored a five-under par 66 Tuesday. “Medaling wasn’t a goal coming into the tournament, but after shooting for a 66 in the first round, I was going for it,” Wagner said. “Tuesday, I was striking the ball well and hit 17 greens and I was putting well on the back nine (his first Championship to page 5 ➤

➤ Championship from page 2 nine).” Wagner was four-under at the turn and churned out pars on his final nine to put himself in medalist contention. He was even after the front nine, then made birdies on holes 10, 12 and 13, but stumbled a bit with bogeys on 15 and 16. “I made birdie on 18, so I felt pretty good to end the round like that,” Wagner said. “This is the best I’ve played in this tournament, yet. This is the best golf of my life.” Wagner will face Caleb Ketterling in the first round of play. Two-time Pine to Palm champion Rick Kuhn was right in the thick of things, as usual, after he finished with scores of 67-69 for a final six-under par 136 to tie for fourth with Colorado State University’s Dominic Kieffer, who was the first-day lowman with a six-under 65. Kuhn, who won titles in 1991 and 2005, played well both days, by hitting his fairways, greens and putting. “I left a few putts out there, but I’m just having fun playing with some good, young golfers,” Kuhn said. “I’m looking forward

to match play.” Other former Pine to Palm champions who qualified for match play, include Greg Melhus (2003) with a one-under 141, Chad Skarperud (2000) with a one-over 143, Todd Hillier (2010) with a one-over 143 and Connor Holland (2011) with a three-over 145. There was a 12-man playoff at the conclusion of the day with the cut at 148. The dozen ended up fighting for the final eight slots, with Detroit Lakes’ graduate Austin Rusness claiming the final spot, meaning he will face Trasamar in the first round. The second-ever female to qualify for Championship match-play is NDSU women’s sophomore golfer Sarah Storandt, who was another playoff survivor and will face Ohio State golfer Max Rosenthal, who finished with a qualifying score of 138. Two former champs will meet in the first round when Skarperud face Holland, while Kuhn plays Nick Myhre. The Championship match play will kick off, with tee times starting at 12:15 p.m. and running through to 2:30 p.m. on tee No. 1.

Bryant Buckellew of Moorhead, tees off on the par five 5th hole of the Detroit Country Club in Detroit Lakes, on Wednesday’s second championship qualifying day.

Top 2 Mid-Am seeds were 2012 finalists

Spriggs shoots for medalist honors BY BRIAN WIERIMA

brianw@dlnewspapers.com

Almost. That was the theme of Fargo’s Kent Spriggs’ 2012 Pine to Palm Mid-Am golf tournament. Spriggs just missed out on the 2012 medalist laurels, after Detroit Lakes’ Mike Seelye won it with a 141, clipping him by a couple of strokes. Then the Fargo golfer finished as the division’s runnerup when he fell to A.J. Greff in the title match. Things may go a bit differently for Spriggs this year, though, as he won the Mid-Am medalist honors handily after shooting a one-under par 70 Monday and a four-under 67 Tuesday for a total five-under 137. “This year compared to last year, I was more aggressive and used my driver more,” Spriggs said. “I am hitting my driver well and feeling pretty confident and hitting the fairways. “The key is I am also staying out of trouble.” Spriggs made some huge shots in last year’s tournament, as well, when he sunk a hole in one on the second day of qualifying on hole No. 17, which is a 175-yard shot. He also sunk an eagle during the tournament. But this time around,

BRIAN BASHAM/SPOTLIGHT

Pine to Palm 2012 Mid-Am champion AJ Greff watches a drive during his Tuesday round. Spriggs is just more consistent, without the big shots. He had a strong stretch of holes where he made four of five holes for birdies to key his four-under 67 score Tuesday.

“I shot a 66 a few weeks ago here (DCC), but the 67 Tuesday is my second-best score here,” Spriggs said. “After I shot a 70 Monday, I was pretty comfortable I was going to make

the field of 16, so that allowed me to be more aggressive Tuesday,” Spriggs added. This is Spriggs’ 20th year of playing in the Pine to Palm, so he knows what it takes to

make it through match play, which showed last year when he played to the Mid-Am finals. “I just need to stay aggressive and keep the pressure on my opponent,” Spriggs said. “With the competition in the Mid-Am, you can’t have a bad round or you’ll be done. But overall, I’ve been playing well the last three to four weeks, so it’s so far, so good.” Spriggs will carry the No. 2 seed into Thursday’s first round of match play, while Greff will secure the top seed as defending champion. Spriggs opens against Brian Benson, who finished with a 158, while Greff faces Eric Lundmark, who shot a 159. Greff didn’t have to qualify since he is the defending champion. Perham’s Bob Cavanagh had a good first day, shooting a three-under 68, but fell back a little with a 75 Tuesday. He will face Mitch Buboltz, who shot a 157. Other match-ups consist of Joe McGinnis (144) versus Paul Uithoven (154); Perry Piatz (147) versus 2011 MidAm medalist Kent Fronk (150); Kevin Swenson versus Aaron Burnside (150); former MidAm champion Jay Olafson (142) versus Dave Collins (157) and former Mid-Am medalist Duane Siverson (145) versus Jon Anas (154).

Resorters Golf Tournament For the third straight year, a Vangsness stands at the top of the Resorters Golf Tournament’s Men’s Championship at the Alexandria Golf Club. But this time it’s Casey Vansgness, the younger brother of the 2011 and 2012 champion, Ben Vangsness. After edging Jeremy Decko of Scottsdale, Arizona in this morning’s semifinals 3-2, Vangsness of Alexandria toppled medalist Nick Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma for the crown. He tamed the course with three birdie wins to start the match and played solidly throughout the afternoon to pick up his first-ever Resorters title. Two other Alexandrians conquered their opponents in the match-play finals: Steve Herzog successfully defended his title in the Senior Men’s division with a 6-4 win over Greg Mattson of Becker and Tom Eidsvold repeated as Masters’ champion by knocking off Ron Clayton of Sarasota, Florida, 2-up. Two golfers who were teammates on the 2010 Minnewaska Lakers state championship team met up for the Women’s Division Championship -- Sam Falk and Sarah Roering. Falk surged out to an early lead and held on to win, 2-1. The afternoon’s longest duel was in the Executive Men’s Division and pitted defending champion Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud against Lino Lake’s Tim Peterson, the 2011 titlist. The match went all the way to the 18th green where Schomer prevailed, 1-up. In the Junior 13-15 Division, Ryan Swedberg of Monterey, California was the big winner. He defeated Andrew Lindberg of Coppell, Texas in the finals, 1-up. In the Junior 10-12 Division, Nathaniel Adams of Maple Grove, last year’s champion, did it again. He edged Gabe McKown of Lenexa, Kansas in the final, 3-1.

Harris, who won the title in 2011, will hold the No. 2 seed, behind defending champion Scott Linnerooth. No. 3 seed Craig Stein’s opponent was also decided Thursday morning. Both opponents were decided Thursday morning in a playoff, as another former Senior’s champion Tim Rubis

finished in ninth place with a two-over par 74. Rubis was the 2010 Senior’s champion and will face Jim Brothers, who finished with a two-over 73. Nelson wins No. 1 seed in S-S’s BY BRIAN WIERIMA

A last-minute decision worked out pretty well for Fargo’s Clint Nelson, who decided to move from the Pine to Palm Senior’s division to the Super Seniors. But no matter what division Nelson was playing in Monday, he shot a solid round in qualifying during Super Seniors play, carding a two-under par 69 to earn medalist laurels in his first year in the division. “I thought I would play with guys my own age and not try and play with those flat-bellies in the Seniors,” Nelson laughed. “But I played well, no matter what division I played in.” Nelson earned the first seed of the Super Seniors 16-player match play, after defending champion Chuck Renner decided to try and qualify and win his fourthconsecutive medalist honor. Renner did finish second, though, with an even par 71. For Nelson, winning medalist honors isn’t something new, since he won it as a Senior player in 2008 and 2011. “It’s somewhat of an advantage winning medalist heading into match play because at least you know you are playing well,” Nelson said. “I see match play much like stroke play, in that you

still need to play the course, not your opponent.” This is Nelson’s 24th year playing in the Pine to Palm and at 67 years old, is still playing very good golf. With Chuck Renner winning all three medalist honors and two of three Super Seniors’ championships, Nelson knows the division will be a tough bracket to play. “Chuck is steady Eddy, he’s been doing that for quite

a few years,” Nelson said. “I don’t want to beat myself and want go for par every time.” In other matchups, Tom Wood (75) will face Dick McConn (76), while Bill Blake (73) will face Gene Hebl (78); Chuck Sjostrom (74) versus Paul Krueger (78); Tom Hanson (75) versus Steve Sundby (77); Lance Brown (72) against Joe Sauer (79) and James Wolff (75) versus William Hawkins (77).
