Admirals make a splash on the 80th anniversary BY SAMANTHA STARK

Tens of thousands are planning to gather in the Detroit Lakes area to celebrate the Northwest Water Carnival’s 80th anniversary, and admirals Nate Woodard and Alma Alaniz have had their work cut out for them. With the help of local Jaycees, they have organized more than 60 events over the carnival’s 10 days.
Admirals’ responsibilities

The dedicated admirals have been responsible for organizing another memorable Water Carnival that will carry the historical success and enthusiasm as it has for the past 80 years. “Our goal is to have a successful Water Carnival that we are able to give back,” Woodard said. “Just to have a carnival that the community is proud of and that they will remember for the 80 more years to come.” The admirals organize and oversee all the events of the carnival. “All the Jaycees in the community working together are what makes the event successful,” Woodard said. “We do a lot of the behind-the-scenes work throughout the year, but mostly we are just the go-to leaders if anyone needs help.” The local Jaycees members serve as chairpersons for all of

However, much of the work that goes into planning out events and booking entertainment has been done by Woodard and Alaniz. “It is a lot of work, but I love this community and I am glad that I was able to have the chance to make this one of best Water Carnivals this community has ever seen,” Alaniz said.
Why they were chosen
The honor of being chosen as admiral is not taken lightly. “It means that someone in the group (Jaycees) that believes that I can do the job,” Alaniz said. “It’s an honor to be picked because it is a huge undertaking.” Tradition has the Jaycees meeting after the big parade on Sunday so that the admiral can also pick next year’s admirals for the next 12 months of planning the carnival. So when the Jaycees chose Woodard and Alaniz, they not
only knew they individually are dedicated Jaycees, but they knew together they would be deadly team. Alaniz was chosen for her keen eye for detail, and Woodard for his big and wild ideas. “I have the ideas that are crazy and outlandish, but might just be crazy enough to work,” Woodard said. “Alma brings me back down to reality and tells me how we can do it.” In addition, Alaniz has a passion for volunteering and helping the community. “Seriously, my only hobbies are volunteering as much as I can in the community,” Alaniz said. “I just really love to get involved.” In addition, Woodard has been a Jaycee for almost four years and, within his first few years, has already made a huge splash. “I even added a couple of events my first year,” Woodard said in regards of introducing the ADMIRALS to page 10
