Future of Ponder is now
The NFL regular season cannot get here soon enough. Football-starved fans need it, NFL analysts need it, but most of all, I need it - but for a different sort of reason. After two months of having to read and hear about the over-analyzed preseason games and training camp practices on every network, at every water cooler and on every online message board, it’s time to let the real bullets fly. The overreaction of the typical NFL fan is cute at first,
because most sports fans are happy to be hearing the pads smack again. But after reading unremarkable predictions based off of meaningless games and fans already hammering on the panic button with bruised and callused fists, the time is here to settle in and see what the real product each team will bring this season. Every single season, there are surprises and disappointments during the course of the NFL season. By the end of
the season, hardly any of the teams who made the playoffs the year prior, are in them for a second time in a row. By week two, the preseason gnashing of the teeth is long forgotten. So what have we learned of this year’s Minnesota Vikings over the course of the last two months during preseason? Not a heck of a lot. They are 0-3 in their preseason games, with not much to show for from their firstteam offense, while the de-
Viking third-year quarterback Christian Ponder is in a do-or-die season to determine if he is the future as the Minnesota signal caller.

fense has played better. But for anyone who thinks they know what’s going to happen come Sept. 8, in Detroit, Mich., for the Vikings’ seasonopener, they better step off their know-it-all pedestal and just relax and watch the game with no expectations. That means you “Ponder Haters” and “Ponder Apologists”. Third-year QB Christian Ponder has not lit up the preseason stat lines by any means, with a first-down completion and interception in his two throws in the preseason opener against the Houston Texans. His average play continued in Buffalo and in San Francisco. It has given plenty of faux ammo to the Ponder Haters, who wring their hands saying he doesn’t have what it takes and is “the worst QB in NFL history.” Yeah, the extreme crowd loves their extreme clichés.
But cue the Ponder Apologists when they say the Vikings’ controversial QB hasn’t had his main weapon on offense in All-World Adrian Peterson – the 2012 NFL MVP – during the entire preseason. It’s true, the Vikings’ offense is basically running on two-cylinders without the legchurning of Peterson. The Apologists also say Ponder has not had much time to step up in the pocket because of the play of the offensive line. True again. Both sides have their arguments for and against the future of Ponder. But both sides will have to do what everyone else will have to do when seeing what Ponder has to offer, and that is to wait.

IN THE ZONE FROM PAGE 2
The one thing which is for certain, though, is that his excuse bag for poor play will be
empty. Last season, the Vikings had the worst set of wide receivers in the league. That changed during the offseason with the addition of Green Bay wide receiver Greg Jennings, the emergence of
tight end Kyle Rudolph and the drafting of Cordarrelle Patterson. And of course, having a motivated and healthy Peterson will also go a long ways. There is a bit more pressure on Ponder after the Vikings signed Matt Cassel as back-up, as well. The leash just got much shorter for the Florida State QB. But with those weapons
Detroit Lakes’ native Adam Thielen made it through the first cut by the Vikings and will await the final cut, which is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31.
at hand and if Ponder is up to the task of using them, the Vikings could potentially have their future young signal caller. If he can master the play action using Peterson, throw accurate passes into coverage, not get happy feet in the pocket and deliver the ball down field well, things are looking up. Preseason was not a preview of what is to be, either. The gameplan is vanilla, there wasn’t a Peterson for defenses to stack the box for and the first-team offense wasn’t out long enough in a game to establish a reputable rhythm. In the regular season, it takes only a few snaps and first-down completions to establish rhythm for an entire game. In the preseason, personnel is never the same for each series and plays are basic. It’s not a time to shine for the veterans who already have a spot on the team sewn up, instead it’s to breakdown the play of the players who are trying to make the squad. It’s a good way to knock the rust off some of the vets, get some licks in and put a baseball cap on the sidelines after breaking a mild sweat. So you raw-fisted panic-attackers, simmer down. If Ponder starts off in stinky style, the leash will be pulled. The Ponder experiment probably will end and the Vikings will be back to square

Minnesota’s first-round pick Cordarrelle Patterson will be looked upon to provide a spark in the receiving corp. one to fill one of the most important positions in sports… again. But if things start clicking, like they were for a four-game span in 2012, and Ponder looks like a competent QB, taking advantage of a Hall of Fame running back and a new cache of weapons, the Vikings could once again be surprises in the NFL.
The best thing to do if you’re a Viking fan, is to climb on the fence and wait. That’s because the only thing which is for certain this season, is Ponder either becomes the new Purple hero leading them into a new stadium down the line…or he simply becomes known as Mr. Samantha Steele.

“This is as good an offensive line as we’ve had here.” Tanner Bachmann. “Each brings something a little different to the table for us,” Rader said. “Until we get suited up against an opponent, it will be hard to figure out what the combination is going to be.” The offense won’t just be one dimensional, though, with it producing over a 1,000 yards passing last year. That can potentially continue with junior Matt Tangen taking over the signal-calling duties. “The last two years, our passing has evolved,” Rader said. “Matt is a smart quarterback, who makes good choices. He reads the field well.” The Hornets did lose quite a bit of experience at their wideout positions, with senior
240-pounds plus. Malstrom will be the Hornets’ thumper at middle linebacker, while Torma and senior Cory Wokasch will man the defensive end positions. “Garrett (Malstrom) is faster and stronger, so he should be a pure beast at linebacker this season,” Rader said. “Our defensive ends should also be playmakers, as well.” In the secondary, the team will run a cover three with their 4-4 defense and 3-5 set. Hesston Bachmann will be a good playmaker in the secondary, Rader added. “I would be disappointed if we don’t force a lot of punts this season,” Rader said of his defense.
Even though Frazee lost 18 seniors from their 2012 season, Rader still has high expectations. “I told the kids they will
need to rise up to the challenge,” Rader said. “I feel we can be one of the four teams competing for the section.”

Over the course of the last several seasons, the Frazee’s rushing attack has been one of the most potent in area and this season shouldn’t be any different. The deep stable of running backs is apparent for the Hornets, but it will be the offensive line in which will key the 2013 ground game. “This is as good an offensive line as we’ve had here,” said Frazee head coach Jim Rader. “We have two players who are entering their third year of starting, so they have been there, done that.” Those two players who will be stalwarts on the offensive line include juniors Garrett Malstrom and Roger Thorp. Another junior, Calvin Streeper, will anchor the line at center, while three seniors will be battling for the final two spots, which includes Ryan Brandt. “Calvin goes about 180 pounds at center, which is fine because of our scheme, but the rest of our linemen go from 225 to 300 pounds,” Rader included. The beneficiaries of the Frazee Moving Co. are pretty long, with plenty of running

Being more physical is also a goal for the defense. “Last year, we were not physical enough and with many new players, we’ll need to be a team defense and gang tackle,” the LP-A coach added. Mason Swegarden and Olson will hold down the secondary at cornerback and safety. Overall, many players who saw plenty of time on the junior varsity, will now have to transition that to the next level. “The hope is, while we are trying to build a consistent program, is when those players who played junior varsity can translate that experience to the varsity level,” Jed Swegarden said. “Our expectations are always high, but we will need to get better in a hurry. “We are lucky the thick of our schedule is towards the end of the year, so hopefully we are much better by then.” The Raiders will open their new field the second week of the season, when Pillager comes to town Friday, Sept. 6. “We’re excited about the new field and think people will enjoy it,” Swegarden added.

Air-Hawley may make debut this 2013 season BY BRIAN WIERIMA

The evolution has begun in Hawley. The 2013 Nuggets’ offense maybe leaving the ground a bit more often, after tilting towards a more balanced attack, meaning more throwing, instead of their more traditional power rushing game. The offense will be led by second-year quarterback junior Jordan Harms, who will be counted on tossing the ball a bit more than his predecessors have in the past. “Jordan is a lot more stronger, faster and bigger,” said Hawley head coach Peder Naatz. “He has a rocket for an arm and can put the ball in some tight spots, too.” Naatz and the Hawley coaching staff will be taking advantage of the weapons they have at hand and that points towards more superior skill players. “We may throw to set up our run,” Naatz said. “We do have a more inexperienced offensive line, making a conscience effort to pass will help. We want to be more balanced.” Senior fullback Chris Buttke will still give the Nuggets a tough presence rushing the ball between the tackles, though, along with a contingent of running backs in juniors Dillon Omberg, Anthony Loegering and

The only returner on the offensive line will be junior center Logan Alm. “We will have better size on the offensive line, but we will have plenty of kids rotating in,” Naatz said. “There are lots of inexperienced kids, so we will slow down the learning curve a little.” The defense will be stout again, with Alm starting at # 0 0 0 0 2 3 5 7 9 10 12 14 18 18 19 20 21 24 26 32 34 35 37 40 42 55 56 57 60 62 64 65 66 70 74 75 77 86
Steichen and Harms. At kicker, the Nuggets will have the reliable senior Gary Althoff. With a possible new-look Nugget team taking to the field in 2013, a strong start is sought. “We need to take care of business in the conference and get our offensive and defensive lines playing well together,” Naatz said. “If our linemen come along well, we can possibly make a deep run in the playoffs.”

back position is a concern,” Clark said. “But we like what we’ve seen of our quarterbacks, thus far. Trevor is a big, strong and athletic player, so he’ll have the ball in his hands one way or another.” Clark added they will have to have a mindset of “learn as we go” with the QB position and may even toss in more passing plays to help develop whoever wins the job. “But our offense will look very similar as it has the last few seasons,” Clark said. “We just want to polish it up a little from last year.” The rushing game will take some pressure off the quarterback, with senior Bob Bjorge returning as a 1,000-yard rusher from a year ago. Other rushers who will see action include senior Austin Reitan, sophomore Cody Lefebvre and senior John Francis. “Overall, this is the best depth we’ve had at the position,” Clark said. “There will be a rotation and we may even have some two-back sets,” Clark said. With passing being more evident in the offense, targets will include senior Nathan Hanson (tight end), senior Kole Lefebvre at wide receiver. But the glue which will bond the entire offense togeth-

After putting together two of the most dominating seasons the past two years, which netted a Class 1A state runner-up in 2011 and a 2012 state championship, it’s business as usual for the Mahnomen football team. Despite losing their threeyear starting quarterback in Jacob Pavek, who led a potent offensive juggernaut, along with the losses of many key players across the board, the Indians’ expectations haven’t been lowered all too much. In other words, the tradition continues. “We have a tremendous senior group which fits the mold of Mahnomen football,” said Indian head coach John Clark Jr. “They are excited about this season being their turn.” The biggest void created from last year’s graduating class is at quarterback, where Pavek dominated the last two seasons in both passing and rushing. There are several up-andcoming players vying for the quarterback spot in junior Jon Hoffner – who is recovering from a knee injury – athletic senior Trevor Haugo and Jacob’s younger brother, sophomore Tom Pavek. “Obviously, the quarter-

er will be the offensive line, which once again, will be a strength. Fourth-year starter senior Kal Handyside will lead the O-line, while junior Gabe Large will anchor it at center. At guards, each junior Kurt Francis and junior Anthony Sanchez will be hole creators. Last year, the Indian defense gave up just two touchdowns during the entire regular season and potentially, this year’s defense could resemble the dominant 2012 squad. Handyside, junior Levi Liebl and Kurt Francis will man the trenches at defensive line, while the linebackers will consist of Reitan, Bjorge and Haugo. The secondary will be as solid as last season, as well, with the Lefebvre brothers and Hanson patrolling the backfield. “I think our defense will be a strength again, we may not be as big, but we are more athletic,” Clark said. “This is a new team with a new hunger, with the same goal in mind.”

The defensive line should also be a force, with size being the key. Dahl weighs in at 6-3, 285-pounds, while Eckholm is a 6-1, 300-pound lineman. “We’ll have a lot of shuffling through defensive end with three to five players rotating in,” Flaten added. With the co-op between Ulen-Hitterdal and Norman County East in football, the numbers on the team more than doubled going from 18 out for the Spartans last year to 46 this season. The newly-formed Titans football team will boast plenty of depth, along with solid experience coming back from the NCE and U-H teams. “I think it’s a great move, the kids have adjusted very well to it,” said NCE/U-H head coach Dustin Flaten. “There’s good depth now and that adds a lot of competition. So far, it’s been a smooth transition.” The joint coaching staffs also has moved along well, with Flaten taking the offensive playcalling duties and the 2012 NCE head coach Steve
Ness the defense. Depth will be solid in all areas, with senior Zach Stene taking the snaps at quarterback and will also play tight end and middle linebacker. Senior Marty Hoseth will fill the fullback duties and defensive end, while senior Jeremiah Stene will see time at tight end and defensive end. Other players back with good varsity experience include seniors Allan Gwin (RB/ LB), Brandon Eckholm (DL/ OL), juniors Patrick Busby (RB/CB), Hunter Thompson (RB/CB) and Nick Dahl (DL). “We have a lot of running back depth, so we should be able to pound the ball,” Flaten said. “The offensive line is coming around and we have good depth across the board. Once we find some continuity, we should be fine.”

Waubun to employ ground-and-pound scheme

control. Kyle Erickson will be a mainstay on the defensive line, while Cole Thompson will anchor the defensive backfield. “Cole is tall and lanky and has good football vision,” Clark said. “It will have to be a true team defense.” The offensive line will be the stalwarts to lead the ground attack. Third-year starters Tanner Bellanger and Alexander Medina will provide solid size on the front line, averaging near 260-pounds. “Running between the tackles should be our strength,” Clark said. Jordan Spaeth started half the season in 2012 at quarterback and will direct the offense this season. Each of Alec Teiken and Erickson will take on rushing duties at running back, with both runners strong between the tackles. “Overall, the line will
have to carry us,” Clark said. “Jordan can also pass well, but he can also run bootlegs and play action.” Waubun will have two tough tests to start the season against traditional powerhouse Ada-Borup and Win-E-Mac in nine-man action.

The talent is outweighing the numbers this season for the Waubun football team. There is plenty of quality on the Bombers’ team, but the quantity is short, meaning depth will be an issue for the 2013 campaign. “We have the talent to be competitive and we are focusing on improving every day,” said Waubun head coach Paul Clark. “If we can stay healthy, I think we could be very good by playoffs.” Waubun will employ its classic ground-and-pound offensive philosophy, while having a physical defense. “We should be tough against the run,” Clark said. “We have some good size, just not a lot of burners.” Ryan Weber will key the defense from his middle linebacker position, while the defensive line will focus on gap-

Return trip to state motivates Lakers BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
After a memorable run through the football playoffs last year, and snapping a 10year state drought, the Detroit Lakes Lakers are hungry for more. Many of the pieces which formed the state puzzle in 2012, are back for another potential deep run, but there is still plenty of work to be done. “We have a lot of kids back who played last year, but we are still looking for that senior leadership, those players who will take charge,” said DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher. “We are also trying to develop some depth that you need during a long season.” Lots of yards are returning from the arm and legs of senior quarterback Michael Herzog, who rushed for 1,420 yards and threw for 970. The punishing rushing ability of Herzog is helping DL become a physical force it once was when the Lakers’ dynasty was around in the 1990’s. Herzog proved to be a tough player to bring down, averaging 4.7 yards per carry on lofty 299 carries. He added 23 rushing touchdowns, as well. Senior running back Jarett Nosal also returns as a strong in-between the tackle rusher after running for 779 yards. Senior Brandon Dahring will pair with Nosal as an effective one-two punch in the backfield. “We also have some good playmakers in (senior) Casey Paskey and (junior) Sam Champa at the slots,”
Motschenbacher said. Herzog and the Lakers started finding success through the air later in their Heart O’Lakes Conference championship season and Motschenbacher would like to expand on that facet of the game. “Michael threw the ball well towards the end of the season and we want to throw it more,” the DL coach said. “We want more balance and pass when we want to.” Herzog will have four athletic wideouts to toss the ball to in juniors Christian Hedstrom, Ryan Cihak, senior Michael Herrmann and Luke Eggebraaten. Depth is prevalent on the offensive line, which will feature some size and some experience. Throughout the preseason, the offensive line battles have been raging. “I honestly can’t say who will be starting,” Motschenbacher said. “We’re hoping they won’t have to go both ways, either, but we’ll see.” The defensive line is in the same shape as the offensive line, in that there are many players vying for playing time. “We have up to four guys alone at defensive end,” Motschenbacher said. Champa and Paskey bring back experience in the secondary at cornerback, while Herzog and Herrmann will fill the strong safety position. Cihak and Hedstrom each will play at free safety. The linebacking corp. will have some seasoning
Laker senior running back Jarett Nosal returns after gaining 779 rushing yards off of 138 carries last season. in Dahring, senior Dylan Bremseth and junior Parker Jackson. “We were 10-1 last season, but we are an entire dif-
ferent team this season,” Motschenbacher said. The kickoff duties will come off the leg of Champa, while senior Luke Payne will take on the extra-point duties. Paskey is back as the Lakers’ booming punter. The hunger of making a return trip to the state playoffs was a good motivation tool for all the players during the offseason, as well. “The kids worked as hard as any group in the season, hopefully it will pay off for them,” Motschenbacher included. The Lakers will defend their Section 8-4A title, with Rocori being a threat, along with Thief River Falls, Little Falls and newcomer Albany.

Speed to highlight Vikings’ backfield BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There will be some good wheels on the Pelican Rapids football teams’ bandwagon this season, as speed has picked up. The Vikings’ running backs employ quicker and more breakaway speed than they have had in a while, making the offense a more explosive one. “As a unit, this is the best speed we’ve had in quite a while,” said Pelican Rapids head coach Dave Haugen. Junior Gage Lee and senior Ryan Bruggeman will fill the backfield, along with junior fullback Nick Thompson. Bruggeman is a returning starter on offense and defense and was the Vikings’ leading rusher in 2012. “Ryan is an elusive runner with good speed and will also be a valuable defender at his cornerback position,” Haugen said. Bruggeman will also fill the kick and punter roles, as well. Junior Blaine Gorton will
take over the quarterback position, in which he will add to the passing game. “He is a threat to rush the ball, but he is not your classic duel threat quarterback,” Haugen said. “He is a good athlete and does everything well, he is not limited.” On the line, senior Eddie Ramos returns. “Eddie is explosive on the line of scrimmage,” Haugen said. “We will count on Eddie to provide leadership for an inexperienced group of linemen.” Others who will see action on the line include senior Hunter Gray, juniors Thomas Brynildson and center Daniel Halbakken. Sophomore Hobet Diaz will also fill a guard spot. At wide receiver, each of seniors Nathan Sillerud and Travis Haugen will be reliable targets. Sillerud is a two-way starter and has “excellent” hands, while Travis Haugen also plays both ways and adds good blocking on the perimeter. “I think our passing game can feed off our rushing attack

and we should be able to keep the offense balanced,” Haugen said. The defensive line will consist of Gray, Ramos and Brynildson, while the goodsized junior Ibro Kurtic will help clog up the middle. The linebacking group will be athletic in Thompson and Halbakken, along with the Diaz twins, Alex and Hobet. “This is probably the group
of four linebackers we’ve had here in a long time,” Haugen commented. Bruggeman, Lee and Gorton will man the secondary positions, as well. “I feel that we can put together a very good football team,” Haugen said. “We will have several first-time starters, so how quickly they adjust to varsity football will determine to a large extent how
successful our regular season is. “If we can be healthy going into the playoffs, we feel we can be one of the top teams.” (Coaches not pictured: Todd Kuhn, Kyle Haugrud.)

Yellowjackets’ big voids create opportunities for other players BY BOB WILLIAMS Forum News Service
Expectations are high in Perham for an experienced football team coming off trips to the state quarterfinals in 2011 and semifinals in 2012. “The guys have really put a great effort in practice,” Head Coach Mike Jordahl said. “With 18 seniors, we are expecting experience to be a real plus for us. These guys are leading by example and we’re getting some great things accomplished in practice.” While the Yellowjackets have plenty of senior leadership, there are a number of key holes at important offensive positions to fill. Namely, finding a way to replace AP All-State first team quarterback Jordan Hein. Hein smashed school records on a weekly basis last season and holds nearly all the key offensive rushing records in Perham. In a two-game span near the end of last season, Hein set the single-season rushing record, all-purpose yards, most total offensive yards gained in a game of 373 and the season rushing touchdown record. Hein is also the all-time career rushing record holder in Perham and holds a number
of other records. His absence under center is the obvious difference between the two teams. Eli Beachy has earned the starting nod under center. Hein and the 2012 Yellowjackets won a number of games by large margins, including a 42-8 romp over Esko in the state quarters. Beachy saw plenty of action, including in state playoff games. He will, by no means, be coming into the season green. Beachy rushed 34 times for 212 yards in 2012, an average of 6.24 yards per carry and is adept at running the option. “We are expecting some really exciting things from him,” said Jordahl. “He runs the option very well.” Beachy showcased that with an impressive display at cutting upfield for yardage in the season’s final scrimmage at Detroit Lakes Saturday. Perham does also intend to mix in the passing game. “We hope to continue to have a balanced attack with our run and pass game still. It really won’t change much from what people have seen the past couple of years.” Perham’s top two receivers were lost to graduation, as well, in Josh Nordick and

Eric Brauch. Nordick had 27 grabs for 381 yards; Brauch 25 catches for 354 yards. Of Perham’s 59 touchdowns last year, Brauch, Nordick and Hein combined to score 31. Nordick and Brauch are also career record holders, Nordick for all-time interceptions with 11 and Brauch holds the average yards per catch mark. Brauch was able to stretch the field last season opening up a lot of room for Hein to run, while Nordick was big in conversion downs. Senior Tyler Glines was third on last year’s team with 13 catches for 223 yards and two touchdowns and will definitely be a target for Beachy this year. Payton Jordahl should see a heavy dose of the football in the running game, along with Austin Erickson, both all-conference seniors. Jordahl ran 138 times for 615 yards last season and is a two-way threat at middle linebacker. Jordahl has led Perham in tackles the past two seasons. Last year he made 104 tackles, 58 solo. Jordahl will be both a vocal leader and by example on both sides of the ball for Perham. On the line, Perham returns three all-conference players in Dan Ingebrand, Hayden Sturdevant and Brekden Kovar. The Yellowjackets are the benefactors of an kinder than

Hein had an all-world performance with five touchdowns to defeat Joe Mollberg and the Lakers 35-28 in 2011. Last year, DL quarterback Michael Herzog threw for three TDs in a 36-28 win.

The loss was Perham’s only defeat of the regular season and cost the Jackets the HOL-North title. Thief River Falls could challenge both teams for the conference title. In Section 8AAA, Perham is the two-time defending champion. This year’s section is comprised of Roseau, D-G-F, East Grand Forks, Park Rapids, Pequot Lakes and Perham. Staples-Motley moved to 6AA. Crookston moved to 8AA. Detroit Lakes and Thief River Falls play in Section 8AAAA.
