‘DREAM TEAM’ PETE AND DEWEY LEAD THE SLEIGH RIDES OUTSIDE OF WASHINGTON SQUARE MALL STORY BY KAYSEY PRICE

T FREE SLEIGH/WAGON RIDES are offered throughout the holiday season in Detroit Lakes, leaving from the east side of the Washington Square Mall every weekend. There isn’t always snow in the weeks leading up to Christmas, so that “sleigh” ends up being a wagon, pulled by a team of horses that are selected as “just right” for the job.

PAGE 4 | WINTER SCENE 2016

hey are a dream team, the two that give the sleigh rides around the Washington Square Mall every December—not the two horses, although they have their own story, but Wallace Rodewald and Charlie Grose, the two sleigh drivers. “Wally’s been doing it (giving the sleigh rides) forever,” Grose said. About 20 years, Rodewald estimated, remembering that “it started out with a harness club” and ended up being a sleigh ride service, after he built the trolley for the sleigh rides. 12 years ago, Grose started helping out with the rides, since it was getting difficult for Rodewald, who is 81, to manage it all. “I do all the labor stuff, and he has all the fun,” Grose joked. The two have known each other “forever,” as they put it, and they make a pretty good team. “He calls me dad, and I call him son,” Rodewald said. And the two have been through the good times and the bad times.

Grose remembers one “miserable, cold winter a few years ago,” when he got frustrated. The ball hitch of the trolley wouldn’t hook up to the horses because it was full of ice. “Wally, this ain’t no fun anymore,” Grose remembers saying. Wally replied with a simple, “Why?” “I said ‘It’s too much work,’” Grose recalls. But the two eventually got the hitch hooked up, and drove the sleigh into town. Grose said he was still pretty flustered, so when they got to the Washington Square Mall in Detroit Lakes, where they usually sit, waiting for riders, Grose went into Dairy Queen, threw his jacket down in a booth and sat down, arms crossed, feeling sorry for himself. He said while he was “pouting,” a little girl came and stood next to him, looking at the horses through the window, then another little girl, then a little boy. He said they all looked so excited to see the horses, and one of the little girls said, “I wonder what their names are.” Grose said he told them the horses’ names, and the children’s excitement was contagious. He snapped right out of his bad mood, and remembered why he loves doing to sleigh rides: for the kids, for the excited looks on their faces. Rodewald says that’s why he pushed to continue doing the sleigh rides all those years, too. The two, Rodewald and Grose, give sleigh rides for different events—weddings, birthdays, funerals— and that’s why they want a

“dream team,” horses that work well together. “You have to have a team, that when you say ‘Woah,’ they stop and stand,” Grose said. “You don’t want some little toes to get stepped on. “Big toes either,” Rodewald added with a smile. Rodewald said the kids always want to pet the horses; that’s why they do the sleigh rides. “It’s so important that those kids get to pet the horses. The joy you can see on their faces—it’s amazing,” Rodewald said. This year’s horse duo is Jack and Dewey. Grose says Jack is his third “miracle horse.” “I haven’t had really good luck with horses, I’ve lost a lot of them,” Grose said with a somber look. One horse, Una, was hit by a drunk driver and another, Pete, had a heart attack after being out a Rollag for the Steam Threshers Reunion. He says it’s tough to find that perfect team. “You need horses that aren’t going to jerk or get spooky,” Grose said. But this year they’ve got it with Jack and Dewey, and they’re set to return to the Washington Square Mall on Saturdays. The sleigh rides are usually just the first three Saturdays in December, but this year they are adding a Saturday: the last one in November. The crew will sit outside of the Washington Square Mall from noon to 3 p.m. with bows and bells on, ready to give free rides around the mall and, as always, they’ll be ready to be pet or show off their good side for selfies.

ew in Detroit Lakes this holiday season, live reindeer will be appeared with Santa on Dec. 11 in the parking lot of the Washington Square Mall. “Santa will be available for photos and wishes until 4 p.m. and we’ll have kids’ crafts going on inside Washington Square Mall as well,” said Mall Manager Dawn Olson. The event is free. “This is the first time we’ve had PAGE 6 | WINTER SCENE 2016

them (in Detroit Lakes),” she said. The reindeers will be available for viewing, but not petting, and will be accompanied by two handlers. “They are very friendly, very interactive with the crowd,” Olson said. “They love their reindeer and take good care of them.” The reindeer are in high demand and usually return to the same place every year, but a cancellation enabled Detroit Lakes to snag the Dec.

11 opening. The Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce agreed that “this would be a great holiday promotion,” she said. The reindeer come from Crystal Collection Reindeer, a 12-acre farm in Lake Crystal, Minn., which offers reindeer for live appearances and breeding stock, and makes naturally-shed antler products.

THE HOLIDAY TRAIN ALWAYS STOPS in Detroit Lakes on the Canadian Pacific line for a show of music, fun.

HOLIDAY SPARKLE

“I

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” here in Detroit Lakes, with the annual Grand Parade of Lights having kicked off the season in style on Monday, Nov. 28. “The Light Up the Lakes parade was definitely a hit,” says Carrie Johnston, President of the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber works closely with its sponsors to help promote events PAGE 8 | WINTER SCENE 2016

in Detroit Lakes, such as the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train and the Light Up the Lakes parade. “The idea is to promote the area for the holidays,” says Johnston. “We use the money we get from sponsors to market people to come to the good destination of Detroit Lakes.” And that’s exactly what the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train does. The Holiday Train stops at Detroit Lakes’ Holmes Street crossing on Monday, December 12 at 2:30 p.m.

to help fill the local food shelves for the holiday season. Last year’s event raised over $8,400 in food and cash, according to Becker County Food Pantry Executive Director Jack Berenz. Although the time is hard for students in school to enjoy the train, the Chamber of Commerce unfortunately doesn’t have an input on when and what time the train comes. “It’s a little interesting this year,” says Johnston. She adds that she

keeps track of the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train website to know when it comes to DL, or if there are any changes with the stop. The Holiday Train brings awareness and food for the local food banks and shelters wherever it stops, asking bystanders who go and enjoy the show to bring donations for the Becker County Food Pantry. “We are very pleased with Canadian Pacific and the amount of donations they give us each year,” says Berenz. There is also a free concert that musicians Kelly Prescott and Colin James perform, along with the chance to see Santa Claus singing and dancing along. “The train happens to keep coming to Detroit Lakes,” says Johnston. “They like this stop, it’s a good fit.” For the whole list of holiday events happening in Detroit Lakes go to www.VisitDetroitLakes.com or for more information on the holiday train go to www.cpr.ca/holiday-train.

WELCOME DETROIT LAKES OUTDOOR ICE RINK HOSTS SKATERS EACH YEAR STORY BY KAYSEY PRICE

A

ctivities abound when it’s winter in Detroit Lakes— sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing—all weather permitting, of course, and ice skating is no different. The ice rink, located in People’s Park, is weather dependent, but Tom Gulon, the parks and arena supervisor, says Public Works tries to have the rink open before Christmas vacation. “We can’t control the weather,” he said, adding that last year they weren’t able to open the rink until Christmas. When the rink is open, the Public Works department has two part-time staff members managing it. “There’s an attendant there. They’ll clean the snow off,” Gulon said. The attendants are there from 2:30 PAGE 10 | WINTER SCENE 2016

p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, when school is in session. When school is not in session, so weekends and during Christmas vacation, an attendant is at the rink from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There’s also a warming house, which is open when Public Works staff is there, where people can catch their breath and get out of the cold before heading back out to nail their axel jumps and figure eights. Gulon says there is a kitchen in the warming house where skaters can make hot cocoa, too. He said if a group or family wanted to rent the warming house kitchen for activities, that’s an option as well. The group would just need to contact the Public Works Department.

In an average season, the rink gets about 3,600 people visiting for a skate, but Gulon said not as many people may know the hockey arenas actually have public skating options as well. There is public skating, when no hockey sticks or pucks are allowed on the ice. Then there is open hockey times for kids who want to practice their hockey skills. Usually, the hockey arena opens a little earlier (usually in early Oct.) and closes a little later (early March) in the season than the outdoor rink, so there are more opportunities for the public to practice their ice skating and hockey skills. Anyone interested in public skating or open hockey times at the arena can visit www.dlyouthhockey.com

hristmas is right around the corner – and if you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate the holidays with friends, family, or just enjoy an intimate evening with that special someone, why not pick up some theater tickets? The Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes has a great holiday lineup this year, culminating in the return of the Rock ‘n Roll Christmas Spectacular on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Paul Diethelm, Ted Manderfeld and the rest of the RRXS crew are busy cooking up a fresh batch of rock-flavored holiday tunes, cranked up to 11. But before that, a couple of nosPAGE 16 | WINTER SCENE 2016

talgia-flavored shows will bring back the feel of Christmas past, starting with Travis LeDoyt’s “Christmas with the King,” set for Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. Considered “the world’s best” at portraying the essence of a young Elvis Presley, LeDoyt will blend some of Presley’s best-loved Christmas favorites with a selection of chart-topping hits from his early career. Next up is “An Andy & Bing Christmas” on Saturday, Dec. 10, which brings back the feel of those old-fashioned Christmas TV specials with Andy Williams and Bing Crosby. Featuring a 19-piece band and a full complement of backup singers, the show stars Ben Utecht as Andy Williams and Mick Sterling as Bing Cros-

by. “There will be two performances of that show, at 2 and 7:30 p.m.,” says Amy Stoller Stearns, executive director of the Historic Holmes Theatre. The theater will also be co-hosting two shows, a holiday concert by the Lakes Area Community Concert Band on Saturday, Dec. 17 at First Lutheran Church, starting at 4 p.m., and “A Magical Medora Christmas” at the Detroit Lakes Middle School’s George Simson Auditorium on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. Of course, theater tickets make great Christmas gifts, Stearns said – but the Holmes also has an impressive lineup of acts set to take the stage from January through May. First up after the holidays is a

PRESENTED BY TOUT À TRAC, A THEATRE COMPANY out of Quebec, “Alice in Wonderland” is a magical production where the characters from Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s tale appear to “pop out” from the pages of the book and tell their story for the audience. The show will be presented at the Historic Holmes Theatre on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. touring production of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical “Pump Boys & Dinettes,” coming to the Holmes on Friday, Jan. 13.at 7:30 p.m. “It has a small cast, with some wonderful music,” said Stearns, noting that the show, which tells the story of four gas station attendants (“pump boys”) and two waitresses (“dinettes”) who work across the street from the gas station at local hot spot the Double Cupp Diner, features country western tunes performed on guitars, bass, piano, and even kitchen utensils! Next up is “I Am, He Said,” a celebration of the music of iconic singer-songwriter Neil Diamond, presented by the sons and nephew of the late Bobby Vee, Matt, Jeff and Tony Velline – “they call themselves ‘The Killer Vees,’” said Stearns with a laugh. That show is set for Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m., and will be immediately followed by a concert from Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter Chris Koza on Saturday, Jan. 21, also at 7:30 p.m. Koza brought his band, Rogue Valley, to the lakes area last spring for a successful week-long artist residency that was well received in the community, Stearns noted, and enjoyed the trip so much that he’s coming back

for another show. The January lineup concludes on Tuesday, Jan. 31 with the second installment of the theater’s Classical Music Night Series (the first was held Nov. 1), featuring the Greg Hamilton Trio on piano, flute and cello. The show starts at 7 p.m. The ever-popular Daddy’s Little Sweetheart Dance returns for another installment on Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. “This year we will have a Snow Ball theme,” says the theater’s outreach director, Beth Gilbert, who is coordinating the event. “We will also be having two lines for the Grand March to keep things running a little more smoothly.” Another touring theater production, “Alice in Wonderland,” comes to the Holmes Theatre on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. (a morning show for area school students is already sold out, said Stearns). “This show is done by a troupe from Quebec, and it’s truly a magical performance,” Stearns said, adding that the show is set in a library, and features a combination of actors and puppets who appear to magically “pop out” of the Lewis Carroll children’s book as each scene unfolds. “We will also be having a tea party in the ballroom before the show,” added Gilbert.

The next day, Friday, Feb. 17, the piano duo of Dave Eicholz and Ted Manderfeld return for two shows, a matinee performance of “What a Wonderful World” at 2 p.m., and “Deuces Wild!” at 7:30 p.m. “What a Wonderful World” is a show that features popular tunes from the Great American Songbook, while “Deuces Wild!” features duelling pianos, comedy and plenty of audience interaction. March’s lineup includes a visit from the Copper Street Brass ensemble on Friday, March 3, for a 7:30 p.m. performance – but the quintet of musicians will also be doing a residency with the Detroit Lakes High School band students prior to the show, then inviting some of the students to come perform on stage with them that evening. Noel Coward’s classic comedy, “Blithe Spirit,” will be presented by local community theater group Summit Productions in three performances, at 7:30 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday, March 9-10, as well as a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, March 11. Tuesday, March 28 will mark the third and final installment of the Classical Music Night series, with a Modern Trio that includes violin, piano and saxophone. for their annual spring concert on Saturday, April 1, and another touring children’s theater show, “Seussical,” will be presented on both Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively. The Lakes Area Community Concert Band returns for their annual

spring concert on Sunday, April 23 at 4 p.m., and the theater’s annual Motion for the Arts fundraiser, featuring a concert by Post-Traumatic Funk Syndrome, is set for Friday, April 28 at 7 p.m. This season at the Holmes will end on a particularly high note, with a concert by Grammy Award-winner Rosanne Cash on Friday, May 5 – “which just happens to be the 15th anniversary of the opening of the Holmes Theatre,” Stearns said, noting that there would likely be some sort of commemoration of the milestone held that evening as well. “I am delighted that we are able to bring such a wide variety of amazing artists to Detroit Lakes,” Stearns says. “We have a wonderful, intimate venue, so attending a show at the Holmes is a great way to get up close and personal with the artists.” To see all the shows in the 201617 line-up, visit DLCCC.org. FISHING FOR A GOOD TIME? YOU’RE IN GOOD COMPANY...LOTS OF IT STORY BY PAULA QUAM

I

MANY ANGLERS are anxiously awaiting to head out to their favorite lake for the start of the ice fishing season. PAGE 20 | WINTER SCENE 2016

f there were ever a peaceful community to be had where people are at their most relaxed, most atpeace-with-the-world state, it would be the small communities of makeshift houses that pop up on the ice around Lakes Country. It is where people smile more, think more, de-compress more. It’s a place where people become so low maintenance that 5-gallon buckets can seemingly be used for just about everything in life. Yes, ice fishing around Becker County is a beloved pastime that anglers just wait for. “It’s becoming more popular every year and is probably one of the fastest growing winter sports,” said Brad Laabs, who is a fishing guide in Detroit Lakes. He says while these small communities are very popular destination ice fishing spots on lakes such as Detroit, Sally, Melissa and Cormorant, ice fishing is becoming more “mobile” and popular on smaller lakes around Becker County, such as Island, Cotton, Rock and more. “With snowmobiles and four wheelers, people can get to more remote locations and move and chase fish,” said Laabs, who says GPS and new technology also makes it easier for anglers to do that.

LOUIE ROGGENKAMP OF Detroit Lakes, Minn., proudly holds up a 2.99 pound northern he caught in a previous Poles-N-Holes Fishing Derby. Laabs says fishermen looking for walleye have good luck in these parts pretty consistently the first or second week in January, but later on the “bite windows” shorten up to early morning and what he calls “dark-thirty”. “But pan fishing is a consistent bite, and crappie fishing in the area is a destination for anglers, so we get

them coming from all over because there’s so much availability and quality panfish here,” said Laabs, who says in the early season those can be found around the basin area because they’re ready to eat what comes up from the mud. With GPS, he says, anglers can track them and drill several holes to “chase” them.

Laabs says there are free or inexpensive apps that can be downloaded on phones now that show the area’s lake contours and mapping that helps with fish location. All of this new technology and emerging equipment, including state of the art rods and reels as well as fish houses that double as campers, prove that ice fishing is becoming more and more popular. “The days of using sticks with a piece of string are gone - now rods are specifically designed for whatever species of fish a person is looking for,” said Laabs. “The industry has just really revolutionized.” Laabs says Minnesotans are pretty creative about finding activities to do in cold weather, and ice fishing is something that the whole family can do to share time together for a very affordable price. “Even when people maybe can’t afford to buy a boat to go fishing in the summertime, they can in the winter because you can make your own permanent ice shelter with two by twos and some plywood,” said Laabs.

Ice fishing derbies do not die down around this neck of the woods; in fact, many of them seemingly get larger every year. The Luke Gandrud Memorial

Youth Fishing Derby on Lake Ida is the place to go for kids. Roughly 500 of the area’s youngest anglers tend to hit up this event, which is free. And when we say free, we mean free. Free food, free drinks, free ice fishing pole, and free bait and tackle. Like grown up derbies, this one also boasts a big grand prize for the top winner. Members of the Cormorant Sportsmans Club do all the heavy lifting for this one, drilling all those holes so that kids can just show up and fish. And if kids happen to be accompanied by somebody who isn’t able to show them the ropes, those same sportsman’s club members make the rounds to make sure all kids are set up and doing their thing. Poles-N-Holes Fishing Derby is another one of the most popular ice fishing parties around. The Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary puts in this event right off the city beach in Detroit Lakes, pulling in upwards of 800 angers. This charity event is part of Polar Fest, which pays out around $35,000 each year in cash and prizes.

SNOWMOBILES OF ALL DESCRIPTIONS were to be found at the Ultra Snowmobile Club’s vintage rally in February near Zorbaz on Little Detroit Lake.

‘BECKER COUNTY IS A GREAT PLACE TO RIDE’ SNOWMOBILERS HOPE FOR A SNOWY WINTER SO THEY CAN HIT THE TRAILS STORY BY NATHAN BOWE

L

ove to hit the white stuff on your sled? There are over 250 miles of snowmobile trails to enjoy in Becker County – over 22,000 miles statewide – but those trails don’t take care of themselves. Nearly all those trails are maintained and groomed by local snowmobile clubs, Like Ultra in Detroit Lakes, which now grooms 130 miles of trails. “When there’s snow, Becker County is a great place to ride,” said Ultra Trail Administrator Jeff Alberts. “We have such a variety of lakes, woods, open fields, just about every kind of riding you want to do is available.” Ideally, trails open Dec. 1, but first Mother Nature has to cooperate – first by freezing over the numerous swamps and sloughs that the trails pass over, and then by dumping enough snow to groom those trails. PAGE 24 | WINTER SCENE 2016

“We can’t even start to groom until stuff freezes up and we have at least 12 inches of snow, otherwise we’re grooming dirt,” Alberts said. Even if the weather cooperates, some trails won’t open until a few weeks later. The trails rely heavily on lease agreements with private landowners, which give them the right to deny access until Dec. 15 if they want to use the land for other purposes. One trail has three landowners in a few-mile stretch who all like to black-powder hunt until mid-December. In those cases, or if it’s too warm or snowless, the trails remain gated and posted until it’s time to open and groom them, he said. “It’s been tough after two years of (virtually) no snow,” he said. When times are good, the Ultra

club grooms every trail at least once a week and some busier trails twice a week. There is no shortage of trails in the Detroit Lakes area: Ultra has the Vergas Trail, which goes across Detroit Lake to the Vergas area. There is a trail that follows Highway 10 ditches all the way to Luce, about 6 miles past Frazee. There’s a trail from Detroit Lakes west to the Pearl Lake area. Another trail goes north up Richwood Road to Callaway, and the 300 Trail goes from Detroit Lakes over to Cotton Lake and to the Mary Yellowhead Road area, and ties in with trails maintained by a club in the Ice Cracking Lake area. In fact, most of the trails ties into networks are maintained by neighboring snowmobile clubs, giving snowmobilers the opportunity for

extended runs if they desire, or short runs if that’s their preference. Snowmobile clubs could use a good snowy winter to rebuild membership, which tends to slip during dry times. Ultra has about 65 members now, down from about 100 “when there’s good snow,” Alberts said. New members can join Ultra for $25 until Jan. 1, then the regular $40 membership fee applies, Alberts said, adding that part of that fee goes to a lobbyist to fight off regular attempts to reroute state money that now goes to the clubs for trail grooming. Also, “you need a permit to ride on any state trail,” Alberts said, and those permit fees go to help maintain the trails. If you’re a snowmobile owner, joining a club is simply the right thing to do, he added. “If not for snowmobile clubs, there wouldn’t be trails in Minnesota,” he said. “Ninety percent of the trails were put in, groomed, and maintained by snowmobile clubs. Why should you join? Because you want to keep the sport up and running.” The club meets monthly and has scheduled rides and family events. It hosts two rides for vintage sleds, including a popular event on Detroit Lake that attracts people from other states. The club also conducts snowmobile safety

training classes, required for anybody born after 1976, but mostly attended by 12-to-14-year-olds. The club holds a spring fundraising banquet and a summertime “camp and swap” event at Shorewood Campground. The club also teaches people to snowmobile responsibly and to stay on the trails and off private land – leaseholders upset about trespassers and property damage can, and do, pull their permission and force the

rerouting of a trail. “A lot of people think it’s their right to be on a trail, but it’s really not,” it’s a privilege, said Alberts, who has spent his share of time pleading with angry property owners not to pull their trail lease. So will this be a good winter for snowmobiling? That depends on who you ask. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s seasonal outlook expects below-average tem-

peratures across Minnesota, with above-average snow up north. But University of Minnesota climatologist Mark Seeley is skeptical of the forecast. “The trend we’ve been locked into all year has been persistently warm and so now the new winter outlook, November through March, is calling for a cooler and wetter season, and we’re a bit baffled by that,” he told Minnesota Public Radio last month.

WE DON’T BEAT IT, WE JOIN IT POLAR FEST DESIGNED TO CREATE FUN IN FREEZING TEMPS STORY BY PAULA QUAM

L

iving in the heart of Lakes Country where Minnesota winters can be long and cold, hearty residents find ways to create fun in snow. Polar Fest in Detroit Lakes is 10 full days of winter celebrations and is a tradition that continues to pull thousands of bundled up people out for a variety of festivities that come in mid February - just when everyone is coming down with a little cabin fever. Polar Fest 2017 starts Feb. 10 and goes through Feb. 20. “It’s a winter festival that celebrates all things snow,” said Amy Stearns of the Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes. She is one of the many area citizens who pitch in to help pull Polar Fest together. “We’re a little bit proud that we’re a renegade committee - nobody is really in charge of it,” she added. “It’s a PAGE 28 | WINTER SCENE 2016

city-wide festival.” Different non-profit organizations and businesses throughout the area act as their own slices to this big frozen pie that serves up some much needed winter release, some indoors, some outdoors. The party begins Thursday, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. with Winter Shanty beer tasting at Lakeside Tavern. “It’s the official Polar Fest beer - the Winter Shanty,” said Stearns. “The popping of the keg is at Lakeside; they brew it just for the festival.” Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. Daddy’s Little Sweetheart Dance at the Holmes Theatre gets hundreds of little girls and their dads or important men in their lives onto the dance floor for an evening designed just for them. Also that night at 7 p.m. the Poles ‘n Holes Pre-Party at the Brew kicks off, as does Full Moon Nordic Ski, Snow-

shoe and Fat Bike Tours at the Detroit Mountain Recreation Area, where the fun continues the following morning with a Snowshoe Clinic. Also the next day, Saturday, Feb. 11, the highly anticipated Poles ‘n Holes Fishing Derby on Little Detroit begins at noon. Hundreds of anglers of all ages are greeted with pre-drilled holes just for them, as the Breakfast Rotary-sponsored competition gets underway, featuring a variety of large gift and cash prizes. That afternoon, a Guided Wildlife Trek at Hubbell Pond Management Area begins at 1 p.m., with Flashpoint Bike Racing at the Becker County Fairgrounds at 2:30 p.m. “This is where they race around on bikes that have a little ski on them,” said Stearns, “They did it last year, and people just loved it - it was awesome.”

POLAR FEST FEATURES 10 days of frozen fun, including the Poles-NHoles Fishing Derby on Little Detroit Lake.

The next day, Sunday, Feb. 12, the action is back up at the Detroit Mountain with “Snoway but Up/Snowaybut Round races”. Monday, Feb. 13, the Ski & Board with Polar Pete at the Detroit Mountain gets underway at 4 p.m., while “Everyone’s Heard About the Bird” takes place at the DL Public Library at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, Feb. 14 it’s all about wine and relaxation, as LaBarista sponsors Corks & Coloring at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15 features 11:30 p.m. Polar Putt at the Washington Square Mall, Brown Bag Lunch at noon at the Becker County Museum and a 6 p.m. Polarpalooza at Detroit Mountain. “These are corporate tubing races, so different businesses get teams together and race - it’s such a kick,” said Stearns. All this action requires people to keep their energy up, and this is where the Rotary spaghetti Feed comes in, as plates of the carby goodness are served up from 4:30 p.m. to PAGE 30 | WINTER SCENE 2016

7:30 p.m. at MState. Also at 4:30 p.m., the Greater Community TaeKwonDo Booster Club will host its Break-athon at Washington Square Mall. That night, the Historic Holmes Theatre injects a little winter magic into the festival, as Alice in Wonderland is set to be performed. The theatre remains a hot place to be the following evening as well, with Deuces Wild kicking off their always popular show at 7:30 p.m. Friday. This follows a noon tee-off time for the Ice Tee Golf Tournament on Little Detroit. This DLCCC sponsored event features a shiftmake golf course that is constructed on the lake. “There’s probably about 50 to 60 golfers that do this, but it is just so crazy fun,” said Stearns. “Just like there are people who take the day off to golf in the summer, these people do that in the winter, and it is such a good time.” The Aquavit Sampling & Exhibit at the Becker County Museum also takes place that day at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 18 things really heat up with a Freeze Your Buns Run at the Center/DLCCC at 9 a.m. Between 100 to 150 of the area’s bravest stick on a hat and run a 5K through the streets of Detroit Lakes. The fun continues with the Youth Fishing Derby on Little Detroit from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and an all-day Ultra Snowmobile Run for riders who enjoy a nice, relaxing ride on some of the area’s best groomed trails around. The fun really gets ramped up at 1p.m. when the popular Polar Plunge gets underway. Hundreds of people laugh in the face of winter when they take to the ice and take the plunge into the icy waters of Little Detroit. Why the craziness? Not only has it proven to be a tremendous amount of fun for individuals and teams, but it raises much needed money for the local Boys and Girls Club. The event has been known to draw big crowds of spectators who all hoot and holler as community members emerge from the ice cold water wearing their

Giant Jenga, Human Foosball - you name it - the Jaycees are getting teams together on the ice for some afternoon fun, following the Polar Plunge. Later that night things take a spectacular twist, as Fireworks on the Ice begins at 7 p.m. when things are nice and dark. “If you’ve never seen these before you have to go,” said Stearns. “It’s great to park your car on the lake; if it’s decent weather people are outside watching and cheering, and the fireworks in winter are more spectacular because the atmosphere is lower, thicker, and so the fireworks are brighter and they’re a little bit lower PAGE 32 | WINTER SCENE 2016
